is an especially joyful time.

Each season on Amelia brings its special joys, but the Christmas season is an especially joyful time. Amelia Island really knows how to celebrate the holidays. It has been our pleasure in Christmases past to highlight some of the selfless work that Amelia Island residents do through organizations like Barnabas, Joy to the Children, and the many charities that channel the island’s great generosity. Amidst all the activity of the season, Christmas is a time for reflection, for sharing with those in need, and for gathering to share life’s blessings with family and friends. It’s a time of year when we remember all the good things we have experienced, a time to focus on what is most essential in our lives. As we reflect on our blessings, we are grateful, which helps to make the Christmas season a time of great joy. When we celebrate the season, we can choose from countless opportunities on Amelia Island for making merry. In our cover story, we share with you as many of them as possible, like the Amelia Island Museum of History’s Holiday Home Tour, the wonderful “Dickens on Centre” festival in downtown Fernandina Beach, which seems to get bigger each year, “Breakfast with Santa” and the S.S. Amelia—the world’s largest gingerbread pirate ship—at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, a host of great holiday events at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort, plus a variety of musical and dramatic presentations for Christmas, including “A Christmas Story” at Amelia Community Theatre, a big band Christmas with Crescendo Amelia, and “Scrooge the Musical” at Amelia Musical Playhouse. And that’s only scratching the surface. Local churches and groups are offering lots of Christmas concerts and plays, and our favorite shops have plenty of special holiday happenings. Get the most out of the holiday season this year! Cultivate a spirit of gratitude, spend time with those you love, give thanks to God, and share in the good cheer. Along with the happy memories we make, may a spirit of thankfulness take root in our hearts. Also in this issue, we meet a local family in Old Town that has celebrated Christmas on the island for years with some much-loved family traditions; feature the Amelia Toffee Company, now located on Sadler Road, which ships their delicious small-batch toffees all across the country; present a “Fernandina Faces” profile of Wanda Lanier, president and CEO of Barnabas, which provides essential services to those in need and has experienced some impressive growth lately; learn to prepare a well-stocked bar for the holidays in “Island Entertaining”; and much more. From our families to yours, we at the Amelia Islander Magazine wish you Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, and a very Happy New Year! See you around the island!

t’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas on Amelia Island! The leftover Thanksgiving turkey is gone, the shopping season has begun, and the holiday decorations and lights have been carefully placed. Look around the island and you will see historic bed-and-breakfast inns decorated with garlands and greenery, Salvation Army volunteers ringing their bells, and children trying their best to be as good as possible. Amelia Islanders are doing what they do best – enjoying their beautiful island paradise during the busy Christmas season!

DICKENS ON CENTRE The Historic District’s holiday season is already in full swing, kicked off in November with its annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony and Black Friday Pajama Party. Once again, you can make memories as you travel back in time with Dickens on Centre, held this year from December 13 to December 15, complete with costumed characters, themed 11 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

entertainment, visits from St. Nick, and a variety of vendors selling seasonal gifts. Inspired by Charles Dickens’ novella A Christmas Carol, Dickens on Centre transforms downtown Fernandina Beach into a classic English village. Think chestnuts roasting, carolers strolling, and readings of The Night Before Christmas. Shop for gifts from downtown merchants or in the vendor marketplace in Peddler’s Village on Centre Street or Artist Alley on North 2nd Street. While you’re out and about, be sure to stop at the local galleries during Second Saturday Artrageous Artwalk for local art and unique gifts. Don’t miss gift wrapping by Prince of Peace Lutheran Church to make you holiday shopping a breeze! Kicking off this year’s festivities is the inaugural Illuminated Procession, set for Thursday, December 12 from 5 to 8 p.m. The procession will begin near the Welcome Center on Front Street. From there, parade-goers and their lanterns will enjoy a leisurely stroll up Ash Street and into Fernandina’s Historic

District before turning down Centre Street and back to the waterfront. A limited number of lanterns will be available for sale, and participants are welcome to bring their own lanterns. (No open flames or candles allowed, only battery-operated lights and lanterns.) St. Nick has a new hangout this year! St. Nick’s Grotto, sponsored by Handi House Yulee, is guaranteed to put a smile on the faces of children everywhere. Experience snow falling while awaiting your visit with St. Nick, held in Tiny Tim’s Kid Zone. 2nd Act Stage will be located at the end of Artist Alley on North 2nd Street, featuring additional entertainment like the stage production The Legend of St Nick. Look for this performance and many others throughout Dickens on Centre. Experience the magic and meaning of the holiday season by making a special wish at a Christmas Wish Booth with Paisley Grace Makery. Create your Christmas wish and hang it on the Christmas tree. And while you’re there, watch the talented Street Painters, also called Chalk Artists, as they draw incredible scenes from A Christmas Carol, right on Centre Street. Dickens After Dark features “A Twisted Dickens” event for adults (age 21+) at the historic Florida House Inn. will help you let go of your guilt and regret as you tell your past misdeeds (anonymously), and then during the show, hear Jacob Marley share them with the world. For tickets and more information about Dickens on Centre events, visit www. ameliaisland.com.

CHRISTMAS PLAYS AND CHRISTMAS MUSIC No holiday season would be complete without live theatre performances of our favorite Christmas stories. A Christmas Story is on stage at select dates and times at Amelia Community Theatre during the month of December. For information and tickets, call (904) 261-6749 or visit www.ameliacommunitytheatre.org. Amelia Musical Playhouse will present Scrooge the Musical from December 6 to December 15, adapted from the music and screenplay of the 1970 musical film Scrooge starring Albert Finney. NASSAU COUNTY COUNCIL ON AGING ANNUAL GALA LAUNCHES DECEMBER 6 ON THE SS SAPPHIRE SEAS After 45 years of serving local seniors, Nassau County Council on Aging has earned the right to celebrate! Everyone is invited to join the Council on Aging for a “luxury voyage” aboard the S.S. Sapphire Seas, Gem of the Island during its 16th annual Gala on Friday, December 6 from 6-10 p.m. at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort. Attendees will enjoy a first class-inspired meal—rivaled by those served onboard the grand 1900s transatlantic ocean liners—with entertainment by John Springer during cocktails followed by musical headliner Leelynn Osborne and his five-piece ensemble. News4Jax Anchor Kent Justice will serve as Master of Ceremonies, and both silent and live auction items will keep guests excited as Aaron Bean auctions off some very special items, including a sapphire-and-diamond ring generously donated by Robison Jewelers. “We are thrilled that Baptist Nassau is joining us as Presenting Sponsor,” says Janice Ancrum, president and CEO of NCCOA. “Baptist Nassau is continually generous, and we are thankful for the partnership.” While senior’s needs have not changed in 45 years, the number needing resources has sharply increased, and NCCOA continues to rely on the generosity of the local community. Tickets can be purchased at www.nassaucountycouncilonaging.org or (904) 261-0701.

ARTS ALIVE NASSAU PRESENTS AN EVENING OF COMEDY WITH JEANNE ROBERTSON A tall speaker with a tall sense of humor is coming to town, and her name is Jeanne Robertson. If you’ve never heard of her, do a quick search and enjoy her hilarious videos, then scoop up your tickets to an evening of comedy with Jeanne on January 28 at 7:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church. Arts Alive Nassau is pleased to sponsor this event, and you’re sure to enjoy this witty performance where Jeanne turns personal experience into humorous presentations that do more than elicit laughter. A graduate of Auburn University, Jeanne taught physical education and coached basketball before hitting the road as a full-time entertainer. She’s proud to speak two languages fluently—English and Southern—and she’s still working at perfecting her English. The Miss Congeniality winner in the Miss America Pageant uses her down-home Southern drawl to leave her audiences laughing and thinking about her message. Proceeds from the event will benefit Arts Alive Nassau and its mission. Arts Alive Nassau provides free or low-cost music and art instruction for Nassau County children who have little access to these services by partnering with the school district to offer a variety of classes and experiences. he Blue Door Artists are a unique collective of local, contemporary artists located in downtown Fernandina Beach. Unlike a traditional gallery, the members of the Blue Door are working studio artists who rent space and actively create at the Blue Door. They pride themselves on featuring some of the island’s finest selections of original art in a variety of media and genres to suit the tastes and budgets of all art collectors, some who come from around the globe to seek out their gallery. Each of the ten individuals who comprise the group has a personality and artistic style that is distinctive and noteworthy. The group, established in 2004, is now comprised of artists Cindy Antczak, Sharon Badenoch, Suzanne Batchelor, Cori Beychok, Theresa Daily, Liz Dion, Sharon Haffey, Jane Hedgecock, Charli Leniston, and Katie Rewa. Once a month the Blue Door Artists are open until 7 p.m. for Amelia Island’s Second Saturday Artrageous Artwalk. Visitors can enjoy browsing, socializing, snacking, and speaking

with the members of the collective who create and sell their art “at the top of the colorful stairs.” Invite your art-loving friends to view new work each month and be sure to stop by in December when a special “Small Works” exhibit will be on display and all items in the show will be on sale for $100 or less. It’s a great time to view what your favorite artist has been up to and to find something very special for everyone on your list, including something special for yourself! Greeting cards, prints, smaller paintings, baskets, jewelry, and more can all be purchased for holiday gift-giving. When you purchase your holiday gifts at Blue Door you’re supporting local artists, while the recipients of your gifts will be enjoying hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind items. The Blue Door is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. They are located at 205 ½ Centre Street. Visit their Facebook page or their website at www.bluedoorartists.com and click on each individual artist’s name to view her personal website. For more information call (904) 491-7733.

What can 3D mammograms do for your peace of mind?

New breast imaging technique makes breast cancer easier to see and reduces false positives. 3D mammography (digital breast tomosynthesis) is approved by the FDA and is quickly becoming the standard of care for breast cancer screening. Because it’s a newer technology, 3D screening mammography is not available at all screening facilities – but it’s available at Baptist Medical Center Nassau. 3D screening mammography is different from a 2D mammogram: • 3D mammography makes it easier to see the layers of breast tissue, allowing for better cancer detection. • 2D mammograms take one picture across the entire breast, in two directions: top to bottom and side to side. Unclear or suspicious findings from 2D views can increase the need for additional imaging and also lead to more false positives.

3D mammography is designed to overcome these limitations. 3D imaging technology moves in an arc around the breast to take X-ray pictures from many angles in seconds. A computer quickly assembles the pictures to produce clear, highly focused 3D images. This allows the radiologist to view the entire breast, layer by layer, for a more accurate screening — especially important for anyone with dense breast tissue or patients with an increased risk of breast cancer. Ask your doctor to recommend a facility that offers 3D mammograms. Or simply contact Baptist Nassau, now offering easy-to-schedule appointments for 3D screening mammograms.

oastal Oral Surgery is a dental/oral surgery practice in St. Simon’s Island, Georgia, which handles dental implants, wisdom teeth extraction, and surgeries for oral pathologies and sleep apnea. Dr. Jeffrey Capes, DMD, MD, who is both a dentist and a medical doctor, attended the University of Georgia and the Medical College of Georgia, where he received his doctorate in dentistry. He also attended Case Western Reserve University, where he completed his specialty training in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Dr. Capes also holds a medical degree from Case Western University, and he completed a residency in general surgery. Coastal Oral Surgery has a staff of 11—clinical assistants and front office staff—who work to make every aspect of the practice patient-centered. “We don’t want patients to be scared,” says office manager Alise Hulsey. “We want everyone to feel at home.” The majority of Coastal Oral Surgery’s practice includes extractions and dental implants, but the practice also handles wisdom teeth extractions, so many young adults are patients. Coastal Oral Surgery also performs tooth restoration. The practice has a very strong referral basis from Southeast Georgia. Dr. Capes and Coastal Oral Surgery believe in the team concept and work with some of the top labs in the country to provide surgical and restorative work. “I am excited to wake up every day able to use the gifts and talents I have been given to serve others,” says Dr. Capes. Gass Family

Christmas

With faith and family at the heart of the holiday, the Gass family has celebrated Christmas in their Old Town home with much-loved family traditions for years.

BY KAREN MILLER PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE GASS FAMILY

W

hen Billy Gass puts up his lighted tree in his front yard, it means that Christmas has come to Old Town. “It seems like the tree gets taller every year,” laughs his wife, Pat. That’s partly due to the fact that now his grandson, Brett, now helps him, and it’s a challenge for the two men to make it a little bigger and more spectacular every year. A tradition that’s enjoyed by their neighbors and friends, the tree welcomes the holidays to Old Town. The story of the Gass family began at Hardee Bros. Hardware Store in downtown Fernandina Beach, where Billy’s father, William Ross Gass, worked as manager. Pat Kelley, a high school student at the time, also worked at Hardee Bros. Pat’s father, Ralph Kelley, was the priest at St. Peter Episcopal Church. “It was my mother who introduced me to Pat,” says Billy. “She figured that since Pat was a preacher’s daughter, she could

tame my wild ways.” Little did Billy’s mother realize that Pat herself was a high-spirited girl, and before long, sparks were flying between Billy and Pat. They were married in 1974. Forty-five years ago, Pat and Billy Gass were the new kids on the block in Old Town, moving into a charming, little house located at the corner of what is now called Fernandina Plaza Historic State Park. They raised their four children there— Michael, Kelley, Martha, and Ross. Since their grandfather was the pastor at St. Peter’s, most of their holidays were wrapped up in church services, Christmas pageants, and decorating the church for the holiday season. “Our Christmas was pretty simple,” says Pat. “We didn’t have a lot of money, and for us, Christmas was all about our family and our faith. We always attended midnight Mass—that was our favorite family tradition.” continued on next page

The Gass children’s Christmas gifts consisted of socks, underwear, simple toys, and sometimes used bicycles, which were renovated and repainted. Pat recalls that soon after all the gifts were opened, Billy would make a huge breakfast, and the kids would head outside to ride their bikes with their friends. “As a kid, I would run all over downtown Fernandina on bicycles with my cousins,” says Michael. “We would ride up and down every street, and play on the waterfront.” For four years, from 1989 to 1993, the Gass Christmas traditions were put on hold when the family moved to Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, where Billy worked as a crane operator. “We were so homesick we took a Christmas tree to the beach and celebrated there,” says Pat. “We attended midnight Mass at the Catholic Church during those years, but it wasn’t the same. Everyone cried, we were feeling so forlorn!” Finally, back on Amelia Island, the Gass family Christmas traditions returned to their usual routine. Pat baked banana bread for all their neighbors, and the kids delivered them. They went back to riding their bikes all over downtown and playing on the waterfront. Billy once again set up the lighted tree, and Pat baked cookies for Santa’s Christmas Eve arrival. This clever young mother also had a little something up her sleeve that took years for her children to catch on to: she would take Halloween candy out of their trick-or-treat bags, just a few pieces, and set them aside to be put in their Christmas stockings. That tradition would continue for many years. As the children grew older, they began to question the existence of Santa Claus. Their father Billy told them, “When you stop believing in Santa Claus, he stops coming.” So they never stopped believing, even today. The Gass family has grown, welcoming grandchildren into their lives, but their simple Christmas traditions have stayed the same. Pat and Billy love to sit on their front porch, in the glow of their lighted Christmas tree, waving at neighbors as they walk by. They are no longer the new kids on the block.

S

omething is cooking on Amelia Island, and it is delicious. A new company called The Amelia Toffee Company is growing fast. It has established a production center in the old Harvest Bread Company space on Sadler Road. The company moved from their Jacksonville location earlier this year. The bigger freezer, convenient location for shipping product, and room to grow is just what the company needed. So where did it all begin? Anita Comisky, the dynamo behind the rapidly growing company, has fond memories of her grandmother’s toffee. One fateful evening, she decided to take some as a hostess gift to a dinner party. As luck would have it, Kelly Abercrombie, CEO and majority owner of a regional distributor of gourmet food, candy, and Florida products, was at the dinner party. She encouraged Anita to accompany her to a specialty food show. Anita’s entrepreneurialism kicked in, and she has never looked back. Starting with her grandmother’s toffee recipe, Anita experimented, consulting with experts in the specialty gourmet candy business. She learned that coating the bites of toffee with chocolate resulted in longer shelf life, a prerequisite for success. The company has experienced explosive growth and is now in 46 states and 400 stores. The company found a niche, and it is the only toffee maker in the country making uniquely flavored luxury toffee treats.

The flavors are bold and include bourbon, pumpkin, coffee, orange, and key lime. Sources include salt from Florida Pure Sea Salt and roasted coffee, local honey, and chai tea flavors from Rethreaded, a Jacksonville nonprofit. Surprisingly, beer is an ideal ingredient in the creation of many of the company’s toffee recipes. Liquor like bourbon and rum can add a flavor punch. Bold City Beer, St. Augustine Distillery, and Amelia Island-based Marlin and Barrel Distillery are valued sources. Amelia Toffee takes great pride in creating private label toffee flavors and has done so for Rethreaded, The Ritz-CarltonAmelia Island, Elizabeth Pointe Lodge, Marriott Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, and The King and Prince Beach Resort on St. Simons Island, Georgia. “We are passionate about our ingredients and using the highest quality,” says Anita. “We are ecstatic to have the partners we do. We believe in supporting local and eating local, and hope others do, too.” Visiting the production facility on a typical day, you will find high energy as employees work at making toffee, carefully covering it with chocolate and finely minced nuts. The toffee is made in small batches to ensure the highest quality and attention to detail. continued on next page.

The employees clearly enjoy working with Anita. One employee manages Marvelous Marvin, a specialty machine that coats small pieces of toffee in chocolate before it is rolled in nuts. Anita shared that Marvin “eats” 30 pounds of dark chocolate every two hours and will enrobe 1,000 pounds of toffee in this season alone. It is then packed in innovative and colorful packaging. Once a year, a special recipe much like Anita’s grandmother’s original recipe is made for the holidays. A bed of finely minced almonds is covered with toffee, and then a layer of white chocolate and a sprinkle of peppermint pieces. It tastes like Christmas. Anita and her husband, Jim, enjoyed successful careers in accounting and their expertise is a great help to their rapidly growing business. The cat that adopted them, Cooper, is among the few cats who do like toffee! Amelia Toffee Company is sold in all Whole Foods, Lucky’s Market, Bealls, and Earth Fare stores in Florida and over 400 stores nationally. Their toffee can also be purchased in 15 locations on Amelia Island, including The RitzCarlton, Amelia Island; Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort; and the Amelia Island Museum of History. Their retail outlet at 820 Sadler Road is open Friday 9 am - 12 pm. Amelia Toffee Company can be found online at www.ameliatoffee.com, and on Facebook and Instagram.

Founded in 1986 from humble beginnings, Barnabas offers a much needed “safety net” for families in need and/or in crisis in Nassau County. It currently provides housing, food, housing and utility payment assistance, and dental and medical care for families or individuals who are struggling with health issues, job loss, disability, or other life crises. The organization is named for Saint Barnabas, who is known as the son of encouragement. Lanier is especially proud of the medical and dental programs. When she arrived in 2012, an urgent care clinic was open two nights a week. Currently, the clinic provides the highest quality urgent health care to adult residents of Nassau County. The Medical Clinic is located at the Amelia Professional Plaza at 1886 South 14th Street and is open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Tuesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon. It is fully staffed with volunteer support. Lanier’s impressive background includes a variety of positions as a non-profit executive. Before accepting the position at Barnabas, she served as Development Director for North Carolina Outward Bound in Asheville, North Carolina. Before her move to North Carolina, she had led several agencies in Jacksonville that addressed health care, poverty, and homeless issues. Wanda was the first Executive Director of the Emergency Services and Homeless Coalition of Jacksonville, serving for five years, and she served as Associate Director of Community Connections of Jacksonville (formerly the YWCA) and Vice President of Community Initiatives for United Way of Northeast Florida. Her career began at Hubbard House, a domestic violence shelter in Jacksonville, Florida. 51 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

Her ties to Jacksonville are strong. Lanier is a founding member of the I. M. Sulzbacher Center for the Homeless in Jacksonville. She is a graduate of Leadership Asheville and Leadership Jacksonville, and a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. On top of all her responsibilities, she managed her own fundraising and grant writing business. A highlight in her life was being an Olympic Torchbearer in the 1996 Olympics for her role in helping the homeless in northeast Florida. She was recently nominated for the Florida Times-Union Eve award. She is a proud member of Rotary Club of Amelia Island Sunrise. Lanier is quick to credit her strong board and staff for the success of Barnabas, as well as a cadre of volunteers that do everything from offering free dental care to working in the food pantry and resale store. When she is not at Barnabas, Lanier has a variety of things she loves to do. She treasures hikes in the North Carolina mountains. When on the island, she takes to the Greenway or the beach for her walking. Cooking for friends is another favorite activity. She smiles as she talks about her grandsons, aged five and two, who live nearby. When home, her two cats, Lucky and Novia, are good company. Barnabas has grown dramatically through the years as Lanier has guided it to meet growing challenges. She is proud that its many services help get people back on their feet, “connecting people, help, and hope,” just as their mission promises.

outstanding orchids As you think about adding plants to your landscape for next year, consider colorful new Ground Orchids like Lemon Kiss and Tropical Punch for your shade garden. BY BETTY MORRELL

I

can’t believe we are at the end of another year, a busy time for all. If you can find a few minutes, stop to admire your garden and all the work you put into it during the year. Maybe envision some new plants planted in a vacant space. Enjoy the end of the year, there is so much to look forward to in the New Year. I found some interesting plants to consider for your next shopping expedition. The Ground Orchid was widely displayed at this year’s Florida Growers Show. I loved some of the new additions, including Plum Passion, Purple Haze, Berry Banana, Lemon Kiss, White Angel, and Tropical Punch. These terrestrial orchids, known as Ground Orchids (Spathoglottis) will fit in perfectly in your shade garden. To add a bright splash of color, try Lemon Kiss, a new hybrid that boasts a clean yellow flower. This vigorous grower has bright yellow petals with contrasting lips and a splash of purple. These beautiful flowers sit atop erect 2 to 3 foot spikes. Flowers open a few at a time and can last for months, making these plants a great landscape addition.

TIP OF T HE M O N T H Plants are always welcome gifts for gardeners, who love to plant something new. Gardening gloves, new clippers, or a tool carrier are always welcome, too!

Or try adding Tropical Punch, a very pretty orange-and-yellow flower that adds punch to the garden, with spikes 2 feet high and an 18-inch spread. Berry Banana has intriguing purple and yellow blooms that will add color throughout the year. For an eye-catching contrast, pair Purple Haze and White Angel. The pure white flowers on the Angel, with its multiple flower spikes, stands out in your garden. Planted next to the dark Purple Haze with its upright green foliage, it is stunning. Plant in clusters in the ground or containers. I have come across an interesting shrub that is sure to please anyone who likes evergreen, maintenance-free plants that bloom year-round. This awesome plant is a Mimulus, (Pyrmaceae) called Monkey Flower. Hardy to 20 degrees, this

53 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • DECEMBER 2019

small mounding group of shrubs grows 18 to 24 inches tall and wide with dark green glossy leaves and numerous large (for Mimulus) funnel-shaped flowers. The three new plants are Burst Berry, Burst Lemon, and Burst Bronze (orange). The bright funnel-shaped large flowers have two lips. The top lip is split once and the bottom lip is split twice, resulting in five frilly petal lobes with light orangeyellow throats. Flowers bloom nearly year-round in coastal gardens, with peak bloom from spring into summer. These plants thrive in full sun to light shade in well-drained soil. Once plants are established, fertilize and water sparingly. These plants were first released in 2013, and are known for their compact well-branching form and large flowers. This new series has blooms almost twice the size of the original release. Enjoy these hardy beautiful shrubs anywhere in your garden. They can also be planted in containers. I wish you all a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a very Happy New Year! If you have any questions, please email me at bamorrell@aol.com.

uring the first week in December each year, Amelia Island kicks off the holiday season with the Amelia Island Museum of History’s Holiday Home Tour. Last year, the tour moved to the beach, and those touring enjoyed five very different homes all decorated for the holidays. Brian and Carrie Barth’s distinctive four-story home on the corner of Fletcher and Bill Melton Road, decorated by Brooke Raulerson of Revelation Design, was a popular stop. Each year as the museum prepares for their annual home tour, they match an island florist/designer to one of the participating homes. Not only does it get everyone into the holiday mood, it gives decorating ideas to those touring. Brooke Raulerson, owner and creative director Revelation Design (formerly Artistic Florist), has been decorating a house each year.

Brooke worked closely with homeowner Carrie Barth to create unique holiday floral decorations that were designed very specifically for the very modern and distinctive home. “Working with Brooke was a dream,” shares Carrie. “She is a true artist, who brought our home to life with her fanciful designs.” In contrast to the more traditional 56 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE • DECEMBER 2019

historic district homes usually featured on the tour, the Barth house offered a very contemporary contrast. It was designed by John Dodd and the builder was Hector Van Lennup, owner of Castleton Homes. Landscaping details include muhly grass and mini-bamboo. Brooke welcomed the challenge. The award-winning designer is known on the island for her passion for flowers

and floral design. She travels the world educating, learning, and experiencing techniques and traditions through different cultures, offering monthly classes at her island shop/studio on Jamestown Road. “It is always exciting to participate in the museums home tour,” says Brooke. “The Barth home gave me an opportunity to show how contemporary art and floral art can belong in the same home.” Her team came up with some eye-catching and very non-traditional holiday decorations. The exterior of the four-story dramatic white home was decorated with strings of bright, red shiny Christmas balls. Challenging weather necessitated fishing weights to weigh down the strings. Bright multicolored wreaths dotted the balcony on the fourth-floor porch. As visitors visited the home, they entered on the ground level. The entry room reflects the taste and interests of the young family that occupy the house. Picking up on the colors and collections of art and furnishings, Brooke created striking arrangements that included unusual combinations of plants and flowers (including succulents) and more traditional Christmas decorating elements. The second floor has a family area and bedrooms. Two very feminine rooms in pinks and lavender belong to the Barth’s two daughters, Aria and Sydney. Brooke wanted the girls to be involved in the project and designed pieces specifically for each of their rooms, as well as the bath they share. The top level opens to breathtaking views of the ocean. The open area features a large kitchen with a white granite counter and coordinated white cabinetry

Thai Spice Café Bringing authentic Thai cuisine to Amelia Island, Thai Spice Café offers delicious dishes like Roasted Duck Curry and other favorites, as well as fresh seafood and steak. BY MICHAEL GASS • PHOTO BY WILLIAM RASER

A

few weeks back, I had an opportunity to catch up with a wonderful friend and enjoy the flavors of Southeast Asia without leaving the island. These days, the wandering Girl Hobo, also known as Karen Miller, can be a little hard to pin down, but we had the chance to meet over dinner at Thai Spice Cafe on Sadler Road, across from the Publix Shopping Center. Fernandina Beach has long offered wonderful seafood, and through the years, different foods from around the globe have trickled into town. It wasn’t until 2018, however, that a taste of Thai cuisine made it over the bridge.

We snuck into the Thai Spice Cafe right before the rush on a fast-paced Friday night. Karen and I settled in and spent the first ten minutes or so talking without ever glancing at the menu. When our server returned, we ordered drinks and got down to business. We had the opportunity to speak with owner and manager Amy Duong, and at her suggestion we decided on an order of their Golden Money Bags. Our drinks arrived, a Chang beer from Thailand for me and a glass of Pinot Grigio for Karen, and only moments later our 62 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

appetizers arrived. The Golden Money Bags are wonton skins stuffed with cream cheese and real crab with a hint of curry, and fried golden brown. Unlike its cousin, the crab rangoon, the Golden Money Bags are not pre-fab buffet fodder, but crunchy little drops of molten goodness. For our entrees, our host Amy suggested the Crying Tiger and Roasted Duck Curry. If you love Thai food and your significant other is a culinary stick-in-the-mud, the Crying Tiger is the perfect dish for them. An authentic meal from northeastern Thailand known as “Seur Rong Hai,” the Crying Tiger is charcoal-grilled steak marinated with traditional herbs and spices. My steak was served with grilled mushrooms and onions and roasted asparagus, and a side of fried rice. If you’re into spicy and looking to cry, you will want to ask for added heat; while delicious, the fare at Thai Spice Café is tailored to a more sensitive clientele. Karen enjoyed the Roasted Duck Curry, a treat from central Thailand. The duck is served in a broth that is at once savory, spicy, and sweet, with fresh tomato, peppers, onions, and steamed potato. When I think of Thai food, this is exactly the dish that pops into my head. I loved the curry broth, and when Karen was finished, I gobbled it up with her leftover steamed rice. As we finished our meal, we were surprised with dessert. What a surprise, indeed! On our plate were four pieces of banana, wrapped in a spring roll wrapper and fried until golden brown. The bananas were served with green macha powder ice cream, a drizzle of honey, and toasted sesame seeds. This was a real showstopper. The rich flavor of the banana with the crispy crunch of the wrapper made for a memorable treat. Thai Spice Café is a welcome addition to the Fernandina Beach food scene. They are located at 1460 Sadler Road and open Monday through Saturday for lunch and dinner.
