season is an especially joyous time.

Each season on Amelia brings its own special joys, but the Christmas season is an especially joyous time. Amelia Island really knows how to celebrate Christmas and the holidays. In addition, we have enjoyed in past Decembers highlighting the selfless work that Amelia Island residents do through organizations like Barnabas, Joy to the Children, and the many charities that channel the island’s great generosity. In the middle of all our activity in this busy season, Christmas is also a time for sharing with those in need, for reflecting on the end of another year, and for gathering to share life’s blessings with family and friends. It’s a time of year when we remember all the good things we have experienced, a time to focus on what matters most in our lives. As we reflect on our blessings, we are grateful, which contributes to the joy of the season. When we celebrate the holidays on Amelia Island, we can choose from countless opportunities for making merry. In our cover story, we share with you as many of them as possible, like the Amelia Island Museum of History’s Holiday Home Tour; the “Dickens on Centre” festival in downtown Fernandina Beach, which seems to add new things every year; “Breakfast with Santa” and the S.S. Amelia – the world’s largest gingerbread pirate ship – at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island; a host of great holiday events at the Omni Amelia Island Resort; plus a variety of musical and dramatic presentations for Christmas, including “An Evening in December” at Amelia Baptist Church, “Miss Bennett, Christmas at Pemberley” at Amelia Community Theatre, and a big band Christmas with Crescendo Amelia. And that’s only the beginning. Churches and local groups are presenting plenty of Christmas concerts and plays, and our favorite shops have plenty of special holiday happenings. Get the most out of the holiday season this year! Cultivate a spirit of gratitude, spend time with those you love, give thanks to God, and share in the good cheer. Along with the happy memories we make, may a spirit of thankfulness take root in our hearts. Also in this issue, we take a look at the renovation of the historic Lesesne House, which was recently purchased by the Saltmarsh Hospitality Group, whose other properties include the Florida House Inn; feature another in our series of “Eyes to the Skies” articles by Gail Pfoh, in which she chronicles the variety of woodpeckers in our area; present a “Fernandina Faces” profile of Joe Palmer, an Amelia Island author who is working on his second novel; prepare a well-stocked bar for the holidays; and much more. From our families to yours, we at the Amelia Islander Magazine wish you Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, and a very Happy New Year! See you around the island!

DECEMBER 2021 11 Cover Story CELEBRATING THE JOYS OF THE SEASON ON AMELIA ISLAND

With the return of “Dickens on Centre” in downtown Fernandina Beach this year, along with a wide assortment of Christmas concerts and holiday music, plays, and cherished traditions, Amelia Island is ready to celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year’s Eve.

33 Preserving Amelia’s Past

45 Hardheaded Hammerers

With a growing portfolio of historic and iconic properties, the Saltmarsh Hospitality Group is keeping some of Amelia Island’s favorite buildings open for business.

Amelia Island is home to five species of woodpeckers, including the large and distinctive Pileated Woodpecker, whose steady hammering in the trees is unmistakable.

80 Island Entertaining

Amelia Island author Joe Palmer, who has been a News-Leader columnist, an investigative reporter, and Federal court investigator, is preparing to release his second novel.

Since the holidays always bring visits from family and friends, share some good cheer by stocking your bar with a little bourbon, wine, and perhaps some distinctive port.

The evening will begin with a mini-concert, which will include favorite Christmas carols. It will be followed by a guided walk through the events that led up to the birth of Jesus, as well as an immersive visit to a firstcentury Bethlehem inspired-village. JOY TO THE CHILDREN RETURNS

“We are happy to announce we will bring Joy to the Children this year!” says Dawn Grant, president of the organization. “Since 1995, Joy has been able to serve economically disadvantaged children and their families in the Nassau County community. In recent years we have hosted 150 children and their families each Christmas Day to provide a celebration that included Christmas dinner and gifts of clothing, bedding, books, school supplies, hygiene products, and toys. The families, along with our Christmas Day volunteers, account for almost 400 people celebrating Christmas in the cafeteria at Yulee Middle School.” Once again, due to Covid, Joy to the Children is changing how they provide Christmas for these families. They will still provide dinner and gifts, but in lieu of the usual Christmas Day celebration Joy will provide a Curbside Christmas. On Christmas Eve, the organization will distribute the unwrapped gifts to the families along with fresh fruit and essential food items that the families may use to prepare dinner. “The families we serve are chosen with the help of the Homeless/FIT (Families In Transition) Program www.AmeliaIslander.com

All are invited to kickoff the magic of the holiday season at the annual Lighted Christmas Parade, organized by America’s Youth. Bring a chair and find a spot on Centre Street for an entertaining evening of bands, dancers, lighted floats, and familiar faces on Dec. 4 at 6 p.m. When it’s time to welcome 2022, a few events may ring your bell. The event begins at 5 p.m., and the shrimp will drop at 7 p.m. on Dec. 31 followed immediately by fireworks at Front Street. Another great option is a staycation at our local resorts. Omni Amelia Island Resort will ring in the New Year with fireworks at midnight and young hotel guests are invited to toast the New Year with apple juice and dancing poolside. Down the street, The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island is welcoming 2022 in style by hosting its annual Gala, renowned for luxurious food buffets including a seafood and sushi station, a living salad station, antipasti, and appetizers. Guests will dance all night with live music, an open bar, champagne toast, and of course, fireworks!

he Blue Door Artists are a unique collective of local, contemporary artists located in downtown Fernandina Beach. Unlike a traditional gallery, the members of the Blue Door are working studio artists who rent space and actively create at the Blue Door. They pride themselves on featuring some of the island’s finest selections of original art in a variety of media and genres to suit the tastes and budgets of all art collectors, some who come from around the globe to seek out their gallery. Each of the 12 individuals who comprise the group has a personality and artistic style that is distinctive and noteworthy. Established in 2004, the group is now comprised of artists Theresa Daily, Liz Dion, Faith Elliott, Sharon Haffey, Cindy Jenkins, Rena and Terry Murphy, Logan Pierson, Yvonne Randolph, Susi Sax, Donna Strawgate, and Katie Rewa. Once a month, the Blue Door Artists are open until 7 p.m. for Amelia Island’s Second Saturday Artwalk. Visitors can enjoy browsing, shopping, and socializing with the members of the

collective, who create and sell their art “at the top of the colorful stairs.” Invite your art-loving friends to view new work each month and be sure to stop by in December to take advantage of shopping their “Holiday Market,” which includes a variety of handmade, reasonably priced art pieces. It’s a great time to view what your favorite artist has been up to and to find something very special for everyone on your list, including something special for yourself! Greeting cards, prints, smaller paintings, jewelry, resin work, photography, beach- and local-themed artwork can all be purchased for holiday gift-giving. When you purchase items from the Blue Door, you’re supporting local artists, while the recipients of your gifts will be enjoying handcrafted, oneof-a-kind items. The Blue Door is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. They are located at 205 ½ Centre Street. riginally from Lansing, Michigan, Steve Adams now calls Amelia Island home. In August 2021, he became the new owner of Nassau Health Foods after he and his wife, Heidi, sold their retail pet business. What’s the most rewarding thing about owning Nassau Health Foods? “Helping our customers live a healthy life,” says Steve. “It’s not easy to eat clean and be proactive on your health, but our employees are great. We have an amazing team. All of them love helping customers live a healthy life. I also love seeing customers enjoy friendships in our café.” The Mustard Seed Café, located inside the store, is the perfect place for breakfast, lunch, or grab-and-go meals. All the delicious items on the menu are made with organic produce, organic chicken, wild caught fish, and free-range turkey, and plenty of vegan and gluten-free options are always available. Of course, you can also find everything you need at Nassau Health Foods to make healthy meals at home. Like so many people on Amelia Island, Steve and Heidi Adams are dog lovers. “Having a pet was required given that our last business was a chain of pet stores! We have a nine-yearold Labradoodle named Bella.” When Steve isn’t working, he enjoys reading, traveling, exercising, and sharing a meal with friends. Heidi brings a “healthy” balance to the relationship. “My wife owns a cookie business,” Steve says with a laugh. For more information, visit Nassau Health Foods at 833 T.J. Courson Road, online at www.nassauhealthfoods.net or call (904) 277-3158.

Lesesne House

Beech Street Grill

preserving Amelia’s past With a growing portfolio of historic and iconic properties, the Saltmarsh Hospitality Group is keeping some of Amelia Island’s favorite buildings open for business. BY DICKIE ANDERSON

T

he newly formed Saltmarsh Hospitality Group has a passion for Amelia Island’s historic homes and properties. It began in 2010 when entrepreneur and developer Ernie Saltmarsh Sr., recognizing the need to step up and save an Amelia Island Historic District treasure, purchased the venerable Florida House Inn, saving it from an uneasy future. Since then, other iconic and unique properties have been added to the Saltmarsh Hospitality Group’s impressive portfolio, including the Beech Street Grill, the Green Turtle Tavern, the Down Under Restaurant, and most recently, the Lesesne House on Centre Street. In addition to their regular restaurant business, the properties each offer a unique venue for special events of all kinds, from weddings to birthdays and everything in-between. The Saltmarsh group is currently focused on the renovation of the Lesesne House. The Lesesne House is described as Classical Revival. It is the oldest and only remaining post-andbeam home on Amelia Island. A two-hundred-year-old oak tree shades a generous lawn that spills onto Centre Street. Its distinctive two doublegalleried porches stretch across the front of the house. A railing has been added across the first-story porch that matches one found in an old photo of the house. The original owner was Dr. John Lesesne.

When the Florida Railroad’s David Yulee found it necessary to move the town of Fernandina from what is now known as Old Town to its current site, Dr. Lesesne was one of the first to build a home. The doctor left Amelia Island to treat injured soldiers during the Civil War and never returned. Judge John Friend, a German immigrant who was appointed district tax commissioner by President Andrew Jackson, purchased the home. Prominent in the community, Friend served as county commissioner, a judge, and at the time of his death, state senator-elect from Nassau County. At one time, an olive grove thrived on the land that is now occupied by the post office. The home has only traded hands three times in 160-year history, remaining in one family’s hands for 150 years. The structure is being meticulously restored and furnished both inside and out. The property offers formal dining rooms and parlors showcasing collections of museum-caliber artwork and antiques. The Florida House Inn, another Saltmarsh Hospitality group property, is command central for the group and is its most popular venue. Built in 1857, it is the oldest continually operated hotel in the state of Florida. It has housed many famous people through the years, including Ulysses S. Grant, continued on next page.

Jose Marti, Henry Ford, Laurel Hardy, and Mary Pickford. Centrally located in downtown Fernandina Beach, the inn features 17 rooms, the famous Mermaid Bar, and a beautiful garden and patio area with a 350-year-old oak tree. Perhaps the most unique property in the Saltmarsh Hospitality Group is around the corner from the Florida House on Ash Street. This rustic historic home is believed to have been built in 1859 by John Martin Waas, a German immigrant, who was an island pharmacist. The house has remained in its natural state and is surrounded by a magical collection of antiques, unique architectural elements, and oddities collected by a craftsman and designer who lived on-site. The unique property creates the perfect backdrop for special photos for weddings, anniversaries, or birthdays. The Saltmarsh Hospitality Group was created to offer an unmatchable collection of historic properties and the very best in food and drink options. Instead of having to visit different venues with different managers, the Saltmarsh Hospitality Group offers a one-stop opportunity that can coordinate the right venue and the right menu and bar options for any occasion, whether a wedding, seated dinner, or a good oldfashioned low country oyster roast. Ernie Saltmarsh, Jr is coordinating the new enterprise with Megan Chism as Director of Sales and Marketing. “We are thrilled that we can preserve some of the most iconic buildings in Amelia Island’s Historic District,” says Ernie, Jr. “Combining these amazing properties with our experience in the hospitality industry is a perfect marriage.” For more information, visit www. saltmarshhospitalitycollection.com.

Amelia Island is home to five species of woodpeckers, including the large and distinctive Pileated Woodpecker, whose steady hammering in the trees is unmistakable. STORY AND PHOTOS BY GAIL E. PFOH

W

hat is black and white and read (red) all over? Many of you may remember this old joke, to which the answer is, “a newspaper.” However, if asked, many nature lovers would answer that question by saying that woodpeckers are black and white and red all over. And they are right. In our area, you are most likely to find five species of woodpeckers: Pileated (the largest), Red-bellied, Red-headed, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (in winter), and Downy (the smallest). There is also a chance you may see a Northern Flicker. The Pileated Woodpecker, the largest woodpecker species found in our area, is also the largest woodpecker found in North America. The U. S. National Park Service says they are approximately 17 inches long. The male is slightly larger than the female. This species has a distinctive large red crest, which reminds many people of the cartoon character “Woody the Woodpecker.” If you are fortunate enough to see one in flight, look for the large white underwing patches. One of the most beautiful of our woodpeckers is the Redheaded Woodpecker. Cornell University’s website tells us it “is so boldly patterned it’s been called a ‘flying checkerboard,’ with 45 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

an entirely crimson head, a snow-white body, and half-white, half-inky black wings.” These striking birds don’t share all the same behavior traits as other woodpeckers. In fact, they’re skilled at snagging insects in the air, and they consume loads of acorns and beech nuts, which they typically stow away in tree crevices for later use. Sadly, the population of this magnificent species has dropped sharply in the past half-century. The Red-bellied Woodpecker is a frequent visitor to bird feeders and backyards. They especially like peanuts and suet. Although named for their red bellies, it is hard to see that plumage because it can be hidden by other feathers. However, you can always see their beautiful black-and-white barred backs and bright red caps. According to allaboutbirds.org, the Red-bellied “can stick out its tongue nearly 2 inches past the end of its beak. The tip is barbed, and the bird’s spit is sticky, making it easier to snatch prey from deep crevices.” The Downy Woodpecker is the smallest woodpecker found in our area and the smallest woodpecker in all of North America. continued on next page

They often visit backyard feeders, so be sure to offer them suet or black oil sunflower seeds. You may see them with other small birds, such as chickadees. They are petite, beautiful, and fun to observe as they scramble up and down tree trunks or sit on tiny branches. In the winter months, we host the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, which is another species of woodpecker. Audubon.org says that these birds may drill “tiny holes in tree bark, usually in neatly spaced rows, and then return to them periodically to feed on the sap that oozes out”. They also “glean insects from tree trunks in more typical woodpecker fashion, and sally out to catch insects in the air.” Watching woodpeckers with their constant drilling and hammering makes one wonder why woodpeckers don’t get headaches or brain damage. Our National Park Service says these birds are built to avoid brain damage from striking at wood up to 12,000 times a day. How? “Sponge-like rear skull bones, along with a well-cushioned brain cavity and minimal cerebrospinal fluid (less sloshing around), help absorb the impact.” To attract woodpeckers to your yard, be sure to offer fresh water, peanuts, suet, sunflower seeds, and perhaps fruit. Offer small amounts of fruit and suet at a time, and remove it before it goes bad.

FERNANDINA FACES

Joe Palmer BY DICKIE ANDERSON PHOTO BY STEVE LEIMBERG, UNSEENIMAGES.COM

J

oe Palmer, an Amelia Island author, has had an amazing life, and he uses his experiences and his love for his island home in his writing. His first book, A Mariner’s Tale, has won the praise of best-selling authors Cassandra King Conroy, wife of the late Pat Conroy, and Steve Berry, former chairperson of the Amelia Island Book Festival. Originally from Waycross, Georgia, Palmer has been a newspaper reporter and the author of a folksy newspaper column, A Cup of Joe, that ran in the News-Leader for many years. The Bradenton Herald, Macon Telegraph and News, and Florida Times-Union have published his investigative pieces. One notable series focused on the large-scale killing of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins on the East Coast in 1987. His Navy career as a medical corpsman brought him to Jacksonville in the early 1970s, where he ended up working as a surgeon’s assistant at a major medical center and meeting his wife, Pam. But his first love and passion has always been writing. He earned a B.A. with an emphasis on literature. While his writing has taken many forms, including investigative reporting, columnist, and novelist, his investigative skills led him to work for the Federal Public Defender’s Office in Tampa, Atlanta, Orlando, and Jacksonville before he retired in 2012. His debut novel, A Mariner’s Tale, has lots of Palmer in it. A sailor always, he and his wife lovingly restored a 28-foot antique sailboat. They have spent many happy hours on the water enjoying the results of their hard work. The experience was incorporated into the storyline of his book. Many elements of the book’s setting are reminiscent of Amelia Island, including the occurrence of a hurricane. He credits his love of writing to his high school English and creative writing teacher, who recognized his talent and encouraged him. Currently a professor at South Georgia State College, she has invited him to be a guest lecturer. He has also 55 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

been invited by the English Department at the University of North Florida to be a guest lecturer for a postgraduate creative writing class. A huge influence in his writing development has been his ongoing relationship with the Pat Conroy Literary Center and the annual Pat Conroy Literary Festival. A great fan of Pat Conroy’s writing, he has gotten to know Conroy’s wife, Cassandra King, and many of the people involved in the Literary Center. Contacts he met through the Literary Center were instrumental in the successful launch of his book, A Mariner’s Tale. To say he has enjoyed retirement is an understatement. When not writing, Palmer might be found performing on the Amelia Musical Playhouse stage in shows such as Gypsy, Fiddler On the Roof, The Laugh-In Review, That 70s Thing, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Scrooge. His island days are filled with sailing, time on the beach, time with his sons and grandchildren, and lots and lots of writing. His enthusiasm for writing is evident at his book signings and when he gives presentations. He is well into his second book. Palmer lives in Fernandina Beach with his wife, Pam, and their dog, Harley, which he lovingly describes as a “room-sized Great Dane.” What’s next for Joe Palmer? With a twinkle in his eye, he replies, “Stay tuned!”

IN THE GARDEN Sasanqua Camellia Ruby

country cottage garden With perhaps a beautiful Christmas red Sasanqua Camellia for the holidays, consider adding a cottage garden filled with a variety of colorful perennials to your landscape. BY BETTY MORRELL

W

ith Christmas and the holidays fast approaching, we may want to give our gardening friends a special gardening gift. I always love a special garden gift. Perhaps new gardening gloves, a basket of your own grown special plants, bulbs, seeds, or a plant from a catalogue or nursery. Sometimes an online nursery will offer special rare plants for our area. Gardening books, a subscription to a gardening magazine, or a gift card to your local nursery. Have fun shopping! I had the opportunity to view the most beautiful, brilliant Christmas red double-blooming Sasanqua Camellia named Ruby. This awesome shrub is semi dwarf, growing only 3 to 4 feet in height and 4 to 5 feet in width. The 2- to 3-inch flowers stand out against deep olive evergreen foliage. This dense compact shrub is a heavy bloomer, with red flowers throughout the fall. Plant Ruby in morning sun and afternoon shade, or all-day filtered sun. Ruby doesn’t like hot sun or wet soil, and it is heat-, humidity-, and droughtresistant. This shrub is perfect for smaller garden spaces or a spot that needs a

smaller plant, such as a cottage garden or perennial cut-flower bed. Use Ruby in border plantings, containers, as accents, or in mass plantings. It makes wonderful cut flowers. Feed throughout the growing season and prune in early spring before the first flush. This one is on my “to get” list. In my travels, I came across a cottage island bed with a free-flowing mix of perennial blooms. Perennials make up the largest group of traditional cottage garden flowers. If you are thinking of a new bed in spring, the secret to any style is diversity. Blooms and foliage bring ranges of colors and textures to plantings. For instance, Daniella and Stella Daylilies add movement with flowing grass-like blades. Spikes of Salvia contrast

with mounding blooms of Lantana. Look for plants with long bloom seasons to keep the garden shining all summer long. You might want to incorporate herbs and edibles like thornless blackberries and lavender, and of course, cut flowers. Cottage gardens seem to bend the rules on color, as you will often see clashing colors shoulder-to-shoulder, with both grabbing your attention. Plants are tightly packed in a ottage garden, using every square inch of soil, adding to the informal appearance of the garden and the feeling they are overflowing with blooms. Dense planting also helps combat weeds. Another plant to look for if you like blue is Vitex Summertime Blues. This beauty has large lavender-purple flower spikes 8 to 12 inches long on black stems and blooms most of the summer. It’s an exciting new PP hybrid. It can be kept 3 to 5 feet in height by pruning in late winter or early spring. A real beauty. Until next time, I wish you a wonderful, healthy Christmas and holiday season. ne of the featured homes on last year’s Amelia Island Museum of History’s annual Holiday Home tour is one of the Historic District’s treasures: the Rutishauser house, known locally as the Steamboat House. The house, which sits on the corner of 10th and Ash Streets, has been lovingly restored by Mike and Christie Walsh-Myers. Surrounded by stately ancient oaks, the house was built in 1883 by William Bell, then later purchased by local saloon owner John Rutishauser, who was from Switzerland. Its exterior, with elaborate detailing and galleried porches, is reminiscent of a Mississippi sternwheeler, earning the house its distinctive nickname. Despite the challenges Covid presented last year, the homeowners stepped up and offered their house for the 2020 Holiday Home Tour.

Like many homes in the Historic District, the house has experienced many lives, housing law offices at one time. The renovation by the current owners added full bathrooms, a kitchen, and a sunroom. Many historic details of the house remain, including heart of pine floors, the parlor’s tin ceilings, and large pocket doors. The corner lot is fenced and features traditional Southern plantings, with plenty of azaleas, camellias, and hydrangea. Originally from Baltimore, Mike and Christie knew that, once they retired, they wanted to head to Florida. Their criteria included living in a town with an interesting historic district, walking distance to shops and restaurants, and being near the water. Their first stop was Amelia Island. They were interested in renovating a historic home, and when they saw the Steamboat House, they looked no further. They had found exactly what they wanted. In addition to the extensive renovation of the main house, they developed a property next door for their new business. In 2020, the couple transformed the untended, empty parcel next door to their new home into a small space, high-intensity cut 62 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

They recommend checking their website at www.theheirloomyard.com for availability of current fresh flower offerings and workshops. For last year’s Holiday Home Tour, Mike and Christie used Christie’s floralfocused talents to create Christmasthemed decorations. With a passion for ornaments and decorative items from Germany, she incorporated them in her holiday decorating. Two Christmas trees were on display. The most dramatic featured a three-decade collection of blown glass ornaments, many from Christopher Radko, the premier manufacturer of hand-crafted glass ornaments, which are favorites of collectors. Above: The exterior of the Steamboat House, one of the Historic District’s Victorian-period treasures. Right: A gold skeleton used at Halloween gets a Christmas makeover with a Santa’s hat.

A smaller tree on the landing featured some of Walsh-Myer’s collection of German-origin incense burners. A tradition in Germany, the burners are very decorative and treasured gifts. In German, they are called Rauchermanner, or literally “smoking men.” The most common variety, however, is a man or gnome smoking a pipe. The smoke comes out his mouth, never the pipe, and offers a pleasing scent. Fresh flowers throughout the house offered a mixture of non-traditional holiday colors. The color choices of flowers reflected the colors in each room: purples and whites in one, and peach and citrus tones with gold in the kitchen sunroom. In another room, a Halloween decoration, a gilded skeleton, added a whimsical touch with a red-and-white Santa hat. Mike and Christie Walsh-Myers were quick to embrace their new home, and quick to involved in their new community. The museum is grateful for their generosity and for opening the doors to their home during a stressful time last year. 66 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

Pepper’s COCINA & TEQUILA BAR With its breezy patio, comfortable bar and dining room, and relaxed vibe, Pepper’s offers delicious Mexican cuisine, fresh seafood, and tequila tastings and margaritas. BY LOIS CHAPPELL WINKLER • PHOTO BY LILLY SCHEETZ

P

epper’s Cocina & Tequila Bar is much more than meets the eye. From Centre Street, one is drawn by its breezy, inviting patio, but once inside, Pepper’s offers a comfortable bar, booths, tables, and even an attached private dining room for special events. When I met a chef friend there recently to check it out, we sat at the bar, where bartender Jennifer showed us around Pepper’s specialties. But first some appetizers: chips, homemade queso dip, guacamole, and ceviche mixto were perfect for tasting tequilas. Saving for next time the Tex-Mex guacamole with corn and bacon, we enjoyed the traditional guac with its

own smooth burn. And the ceviche was a sumptuous mix of seafoods, flavors, and colors. A tequila beginner myself, I was ready to be educated. Pepper’s offers eight gorgeous Margaritas, but of course serves other cocktails like a Mule, Gimlet, Old-Fashioned, Piñata, and my choice, the Paloma, or the even better Spicy Paloma. If you want to know more about tequila and its history, Pepper’s offers an interesting guide to the nuances between four age categories of tequila: the light and crisp Blanco; Reposado, 68 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

which is rested less than a year; Anejo, which is mature and deeply toasty, barrel-aged for 1 to 3 years; and Extra Anejo, which is barrel-aged for 3-plus years and more mature. Cristalino describes a treatment of tequila, usually an Añejo, which has been filtered with activated charcoal, leaving a fruity, sweet, clear liquid. My Cristalino served neat was like an immensely sippable fine cognac. You can continue the agave adventure at Pepper’s with Mezcal and tasting their eleven offerings, and sample flights in Select, Cristalino, and Smokey! Finally, Pepper’s has wines and beers, hard seltzers, and three sangria choices. Pepper’s takes peppers seriously, and you’ll find serrano, poblano, bell, ancho, chipotle, and jalapeños prepared in ways that best utilize their textures, colors, and flavors. Fresh seafood and local shrimp are prepared in special ways that diners may never have seen, like the glorious Nachos Camarón with grilled shrimp, pico de gallo, house queso sauce, and sliced avocado, and the Camarones a La Diabla, which is perfect for spicy food lovers like me. Vegetarian versions of Enchiladas de Mole, Chile Relleno, or Sizzling Fajitas are marked by a leaf on the menu. Meat choices abound, with Chorizo sausage, braised pork tips, and antibioticfree chicken; Angus beef comes in Pepper’s favorites like barbacoa, carne asada, and birria, which is served either in a quesadilla or a taco. And plan carefully so you can enjoy desserts like the luscious Milky Caramel Galaxy Chocolate Cake, Authentic Churros, and Traditional Flan. If you would rather enjoy take-out or want to drink and not drive, you can have Pepper’s foods and drinks delivered to your house! Order online on the restaurant website or check out the daily Takeout and Delivery specials. Interested in Margaritas at home? Try the Top-Shelf Margarita Kit that makes 15 drinks for $65 or just order Take-Home Margaritas. Located at 530 Centre Street, Pepper’s Cocina & Tequila Bar opens every day at 11 am, and they are ready to share with you the many ways they offer Mexican hospitality, foods, and drinks.

he holidays are upon us once again, and everyone seems ready to get together with family and friends. One of our favorite things to do for the holidays is to explore the latest trends in wine and spirits, both for gift-giving and for entertaining. At Amelia Island Wine Company, manager Holly Carlile has been studying the virtues of Port Wine and suggests spending time with friends over a glass of this historic fortified wine produced in Portugal. “Ports are something special for a holiday party or a hostess gift. They can elevate the holiday meal, and they pair well with a multitude of things,” says Carlile. “White port, ruby port, and tawny port each have a unique flavor and are very pleasing to the palate.” Carlile recommends Warre’s White Port with tonic and a slice of orange to enjoy and invigorate your palate for a long 80 AMELIA ISLANDER MAGAZINE •

holiday meal or a festive cocktail party. “A Ruby Port like Fonesca pairs well with a dessert like chocolate torte,” she says. “My personal favorite, Broadbent 20-year-old Tawny Port, is great with rich savory entrées like blue cheese topped steak or rare roast beef with horseradish sauce.” Mitchell Wickless, owner of Five Points Liquor, says that bourbon is hotter than ever right now. “Bourbons are number one across the country,” says Wickless. “Especially allocated bourbons. They make a great gift for your bourbonloving friends, and a special treat for yourself.” With origins in Bourbon County, Kentucky, the production of bourbon has since expanded across numerous states with bottles of various flavors and price points available. If you want to impress your bourbonloving friends, a Smoked Old-Fashioned cocktail is the way to go, but you’re going to need to purchase a smoking gun. Prepare the Old-Fashioned using your favorite recipe, then place the cocktail under a smoking dome and use the smoking gun to add smoke. Let sit for 2 to 4 minutes before removing the dome, then serve. If you’re planning a holiday gathering or a family gettogether, be sure to stock your bar properly. You’ll need a selection of the usual suspects, like vodka, gin, bourbon, rye whiskey, rum, and tequila, depending on the types of cocktails you want to make. You’ll also need red and white wine, beer, and maybe hard cider, which is extremely popular right now, along with mixers and plenty of non-alcoholic drinks and juices. If you don’t want to stock an extensive bar, consider creating one signature cocktail, or plan your party around a pot of gløgg, a spiced and sweetened, heated red wine, or consider a punch bowl full of rich eggnog. And don’t forget the proper glassware for your holiday party. It really does make a difference in the way your drinks taste, especially with champagne and wine. Remember those cocktail napkins you received at Christmas last year? It’s time to get those out for this year’s parties, and don’t forget all the go-withs like olives, lemons, limes, oranges, bitters, and flavored salts for rimming your glasses. If you’re looking for some new wines this year, Amelia Island Wine Company offers wine tastings every Friday night. They are located at 4924 First Coast Highway. Five Points Liquors, located at 2112 South 8th Street, has a knowledgeable staff who can help you stock your bar. Enjoy the holiday season on Amelia Island this year and be sure to drink responsibly!
