LETTER FROM THE

MY SISTER-IN-LAW WAS RECENTLY VISITING Wellfleet, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod, where Phil and I got married fourteen years ago this summer, and she texted us a photo of the bar at the inn where we had our reception. We still visit Wellfleet when we can, and we have gone back there ourselves a couple of times to have a drink and reminisce with the owners. The venue now has a new owner, but it is still the same charming place it was when we celebrated there with family and friends those many summers ago. We enjoyed seeing the photo, and it means a lot to know that so many friends and family members still remember that day as fondly as we do. Of course, for us, it remains one of the most important events of our lives, and just seeing a photo on my phone brought back a rush of happy memories. In this issue, we are happy to present to you once again the special stories of a few couples who created their own scrapbook of unforgettable memories right here on Amelia Island. Like we did, each couple is leaving behind their old lives and embarking on an exciting new life together, a great adventure that will bring untold joys and challenges. The moment is so full of hope and optimism, and so full of the joy of sharing with good friends and family, that the beauty of the occasion always shines through in

every wedding we are fortunate enough to feature, in whatever style suits the couple best. Naturally, all the weddings we feature are celebrated right here on our little island paradise, so it is easy for couples who marry here to plan a wedding celebration in almost any style they can imagine! Amelia Island is particularly blessed with a number of beautiful churches and stunning natural beauty, so couples can enjoy an oceanfront ceremony or reception, panoramic marsh vistas that run out to the Intracoastal Waterway—which can include an unforgettable sunset in the early evening—or beautifully manicured golf course greenery with a backdrop of elegant oaks. All of these romantic settings can be enjoyed at the many wonderful venues—great and small—here on the island. One reason why Amelia Island is such a popular place to get married is that a couple can really have the wedding of their dreams here, whatever their dream may be. In the Editor’s Note from the last issue, I wrote about my cousin, Frank, and his wife, Shannon, who were married here recently. Every couple puts their own unique stamp on their wedding, and so did Frank and Shannon, despite having their plans blown off course a little by Hurricane Sandy. In this issue, we are happy to include the story of their memorable wedding celebration. We hope you will enjoy reading this issue of Amelia Island Weddings as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Whether you’re planning your own wedding, know someone who is planning one, or just thinking about getting married someday, we hope you will find something to inspire you in these pages.

For an elegant wedding celebration that will sweep you back in time to the luxury of a bygone era, try The Ribault Club. Located on beautiful Fort George Island just south of Amelia, The Ribault Club began as a luxurious winter retreat for wealthy industrialists in the late 1920’s. A fantastic circular drive leading up to the elegant Georgian facade of the clubhouse makes for a fabulous entrance and exit for the bride and groom. Surrounded by ancient live oaks dripping with moss and towering palm trees, the exquisitely restored historic building, made of wood and white painted brick with French windows and green shutters, is the perfect setting for a stunning wedding. Designed in a horse-shoe shape with a ballroom on one end and a dining room on the other, the club offers a variety of different spaces, including a covered verandah overlooking the lush shaded lawn and the Fort George River. A series of smaller salons can provide a perfect place to store gifts, or a place for kids to gather and watch a movie during a reception. Lorna Meehan and her professional staff will help you with every detail for a truly memorable event. Oyster Bay Yacht Club, a private yacht club and marina, is an exquisite destination for weddings, receptions, rehearsal dinners, and corporate retreats. Nestled among canopied oak trees with expansive water views, the stunning clubhouse boasts 7,500 square feet of combined venue space. And, although The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island would appear to have been the perfect venue for Amanda and T.J.’s wedding, it was difficult for the couple to imagine getting married at their place of employment. “We decided to get married at Walker’s Landing at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation,” says Amanda. “I wanted to get married under the live oak trees.” After their engagement in Savannah, the couple was especially fond of the charm and ambience of the South. Amanda worked closely with Larry Miller from Island Flower & Garden, using an inspiration board. Because the beauty of Walker’s Landing’s stands alone, there was no reason to go overboard with decorations. Oyster shells held table cards for the guests, and all the decor was as natural AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 15

as possible. Amanda’s mother, Barbara Lavin, co-owner of InsideOut Home and Garden, was a big influence on Amanda’s sense of style. “I definitely take after my mother when it comes to decorating,” says Amanda. Amanda and T.J. used as many local vendors as possible, hosting several events throughout the wedding weekend. To welcome out-of-town guests on the Thursday night before the wedding, a dinner party was held at the Salty Pelican, the busy restaurant in downtown Fernandina Beach where T.J. is now co-owner, having left The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island four years ago. On Friday, the guys played golf all day, while the girls spent time at a nail salon. On Friday evening, the group enjoyed an Amelia River Cruise, and then a rehearsal 16 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

dinner at España Restaurant and Tapas. The Omni provided all the food for the wedding reception, with guidance from Dorry Martin, the resort’s event coordinator. And, on Sunday following the wedding, the family met at Gourmet Gourmet for brunch before the guests all headed home. Amanda and T.J. continue to prepare food and plan events for a living. T.J.’s new restaurant is a smashing success, and Amanda’s position at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island allows her to create beautiful and professionally executed affairs every day. But the most important occasion that this busy local couple has ever put together will always be their very own wedding day, and the cherished memories they have of planning it together. Lauren & Christopher T H E R I T Z - C A R LT O N , A M E L I A I S L A N D By Karen Miller

LAUREN CROWLEY HAS BEEN VACATIONING ON AMELIA ISLAND SINCE she was two years old. She and her family lived in Philadelphia, and her fond memories of those lovely island escapes stayed with her for years. It was only natural, then, that Lauren would want to get married on Amelia Island, and, when she and her boyfriend, Christopher Corrinet, got engaged, Amelia Island beckoned them to its sunny shores. Lauren and Christopher met in 2006 at the commercial real estate firm where they both worked in New York City. Five years later, on a crazy, busy, rainy day, everything seemed to be going wrong at work. While trying to make it to a Christmas pageant and dinner out with some family members, Lauren thought Christopher was acting oddly. He grabbed her hand and suggested that they take a walk in Central Park. In front of the Metropolitan 18 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

Museum of Art, he got down on his knee and proposed. “It was definitely one of those New York City moments!” laughs Lauren. “A lot of passers-by were clapping and cheering. And, after I said ‘yes,’ Christopher suggested we go by the Surry Hotel to celebrate.” And celebrate they did, for Christopher had a few more tricks up his sleeve: the hotel was decorated with linens, flowers, and champagne—and fifty of their closest friends and family members showed up to share in their happiness! Lauren and Christopher decided to hold their wedding at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, a perfect venue for their ceremony and reception. Their event was quite large—over 170 guests— and the hotel was able to accommodate that number with ease. The hotel’s wedding planner, Christina Saldana, was a godsend to Lauren, who knew it would be stressful to plan such a large event

from so far away. “Christina was amazing!” remembers Lauren. “Not only was she my planner, but also she was my therapist. I could talk to her about everything I was thinking and feeling, and she knew exactly what to do.” Lauren’s parents, Beverly and Jim Crowley, live on Amelia Island permanently now. As mother of the bride, Beverly was eager to assist, and she helped coordinate the plans with Lauren. “Lauren knew exactly what she wanted for her wedding,” said Beverly. “Their theme was ‘The Great Gatsby,’ and the décor was from the 1920’s. It was just beautiful.” Seven bridesmaids and groomsmen, two flower girls, and two ring bearers made for a large wedding party. The rehearsal dinner was held at the Oyster Bay Yacht Club, and the family made arrangements with Amelia Island Trolleys to transport the guests. Oyster Bay’s event planner, Terrie Sanders, ‘made the rehearsal dinner just perfect,’ says Lauren. The Ritz-Carlton wedding was a dream come true: a stunning lawn wedding, an exquisite cocktail reception, dinner,

dancing, and even a bonfire on the beach that went into the wee hours of the morning. On Sunday, the family gathered at Merge Restaurant for a superb brunch, and Sunday evening, at Don Quixote, for a goodbye dinner. Lauren and Christopher were long gone at that point—off to Hawaii for their honeymoon—while the remainder for their guests continued to enjoy their destination wedding vacation. But, as all wedding plans have a bump in the road now and then, the Crowley-Corrinet wedding just so happened to fall around the time that Hurricane Sandy was due to pound the Northeast. The Wednesday before the wedding, the family realized the storm was going to hit New York and New Jersey. Lauren was already on Amelia Island, but her fiancée was still in New York, and flights were beginning to be canceled. Christopher packed quickly, picked up their friend and maid of honor, Andrea, and drove to Greenwich, Connecticut to pick up the rings. Then it was off to Hartford, where they caught the last flight out of the state before the storm hit. “It was kind of a miracle that they both made it here, with the storm and all,” says Lauren. “The wedding went on as planned, and all our guests made it here safely.” But the couple’s favorite part of the wedding was their first dance after the ceremony. “I was so relieved at that point,” said Lauren. “Christopher was here, safe, and we were married. The band played Ray LaMontagne’s ‘You Are the Best Thing,’ and it was the happiest moment in my life.” AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 19

THE CROWD OF OVER 100 JOINED HANDS AND CIRCLED AROUND the couple to celebrate the unity of the bride and groom with the traditional Italian Tarantella wedding dance. Katie Zuccarelli and Pierce Bradford smiled, thinking that their wedding was more joyful than they ever imagined it could be, and then Katie’s dad took the microphone and began serenading the crowd in Italian. It was truly an evening that will be imprinted on their hearts forever. The couple, of Plano, Texas, met 12 years ago and reconnected through Facebook in 2008. Katie, then a personal shopper, reminisces that he was making her laugh, and that is the only reason she agreed to take Pierce shopping. She never dreamed she would be picnicking in a field of Texas bluebonnets three years later saying, “Yes!” “I always wanted to get married on the beach,” Katie explained. “We have a big family and wanted everyone to be 20 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

together, and Amelia Island was the perfect scene for our Italianthemed wedding: romantic, untouched, not touristy, quaint, and there is so much to do.” On Thursday before the wedding, the guests arrived, and the girls gave the bride a bachelorette party at the rented home of the bride’s parents at Amelia Island Plantation. Meanwhile, the men headed to downtown Fernandina Beach to enjoy the Amelia Island Jazz Festival. The next day, the couple strolled downtown Fernandina Beach’s cobblestone walkways. “We will never forget getting our marriage license at the historic courthouse in Fernandina,” says Pierce. Meanwhile, their guests enjoyed the beach at the Omni Resort & Hotel at Amelia Island Plantation. The couple thanked each guest with a welcome bag that included snacks, playing cards, and red and white wines that the bride’s father shipped from Italy.

All the guests celebrated the rehearsal dinner at the Falcon’s Nest Pub at the Omni Resort. On the morning of her wedding, Katie enjoyed a homemade breakfast from her mother, Annette. Pam Bell Photography spent the day with the family, while Artistic Florist was busy preparing for the day. “The staff at the Omni, Brooke Raulerson of Artistic Florist, and Pam Bell are a triple threat. All three pulled together the ideas for the wedding which Katie and Pierce had dreamed about,” explains Annette. At five o’clock, the bride’s father, Peter, escorted Katie down the aisle to the tune of Crain’s “Butterfly Waltz,” performed by Trio Dolce from Resort Talent. The bride wore a blush Monique Lhuillier gown, and her bridesmaids donned muted lavender chiffon dresses. “The color scheme of this wedding—prestigious peach, blush and ivories—embraced the true beauty of Amelia Island.” explains Raulerson. The ceremony was held by the ocean. Following the ceremony, guests were shuttled to Walker’s Landing, which overlooks the marsh, for the reception. “The

gorgeous sunset over the marsh grass and Intracoastal Waterway set the romantic tone for the evening,” says Dorry Martin, the Omni’s catering sales manager. Inside Walker’s Landing, Artistic Florist created an elegant space. “We brought in a genuine antique buffet furniture piece, old crates, and luggage to set up a candy bar displaying bottles of vintage-labeled rock candy,” describes Raulerson. “The ceiling treatment included strings of cafe bulb lighting, white paper lanterns, and assorted sizes of lit grapevine orbs.” Guests enjoyed a delicious buffet, complete with a gelato and espresso bar and “Mama Mioli’s cookies,” a Zuccarelli family recipe. The evening’s entertainment climaxed when the bride’s father joined the band on drums for a song. “He always dreamed about playing at his daughter’s wedding,” explains Katie. Guests illuminated the night sky with long sparklers as the couple left for their wedding night and honeymoon to the Caribbean. “Everything was just how we wanted it—romantic, whimsical, and non-traditional,” says the couple. And that is just how they continue to enjoy married life. AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 21

Sue & Joe R I B A U LT C L U B By Julie Simmons Photography by Leah Powell Photography ON THE AFTERNOON OF HER WEDDING, THE NEW ENGLAND BRIDE’S cowboy boots walked her to the groom. “We laugh that the theme of our wedding was ‘North meets South,’” explains Sue Stemke Dukes. And her boots were just the start of the fun at her wedding to Joe Dukes of Jacksonville, Florida. The bride is a graduate of the University of Florida, and she met her husband at a friend’s wedding in 2008. On a visit to Joe in Jacksonville soon after, they toured the Ribault Club at Fort George Island, just a few miles from Amelia Island. “Joe loved the Ribault Club and commented that he’d like to have his wedding there,” recalls Sue. When the planning commenced years later, the 100 acres of waterfront beauty canopied with oak and palm trees was still the place. Joe proposed in March 2012, beside the river in downtown Jacksonville. “He pulled out a photo of a Craig’s List ad that showed a boat,” says Sue. “He said he hoped the nice dinner eased the blow, because he’d bought a boat.” The hopeful bride-to-be was devastated and on the verge of tears when Joe asked how he could make it better. “I told him that the best thing he could do was to find the closest jewelry store and buy the biggest diamond they had.” The tears truly began to flow when Joe pulled a diamond engagement ring out of his pocket. (And p.s.—he hadn’t really bought the boat!) “So many of our friends love Florida for Disney and Miami,” says Sue. “We wanted our wedding weekend to show them the rest of the state and hoped they’d adore it as much as we do!” The guests stayed at several Amelia Island hotels, and the beauty of the

22 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

island spoke for itself. “My parents rented villas and other families rented hotel rooms at the Omni Resort & Hotel at Amelia Island Plantation. It could not have been better.” On Thursday, the men of the wedding party were enjoying sport fishing on the Atlantic Ocean, while ladies were poolside at the resort. “That evening, we had a welcome reception at the Omni in a second-floor room overlooking the ocean. The gentlemen also enjoyed golf at the Omni’s Ocean Links course. The rehearsal dinner was held at the Ocean Club of Amelia and catered by Sliders Seaside Grill. “We’ve been going to Sliders for years and loved having them cater dinner for the wedding party. It was very intimate and a memorable part of the weekend,” shares Sue. After dinner, friends gathered for an after-party at the Ocean Club. For the ceremony, the bride was dressed in a strapless lace gown and cathedral-length veil. The pastor who married the couple had also married the brides’ parents and baptized the bride.

“It was so neat to have him with us,” explains Sue. Her cousin is a violinist and composer, and she played self-composed pieces for the ceremony. “The couple matched our club,” says Lorna Meehan, Ribault Club senior wedding planner. “Their style was elegant, romantic, and traditional, but not old-fashioned. The Club enhanced their wedding and reception, making it a magical night and a wonderful start for two lovely people.” Guests danced to The Faze Band of St. Augustine, and Sue’s cousin accompanied the band in the couple’s first dance song. At the reception, the couple remembered loved ones lost with Mason jar flower arrangements accented with his or her name. The evening was as meaningful as it was enjoyable for all. With the bride in boots and the groom without a boat, Sue and Joe have the kind of relationship that brings North and South together—and creates a lifetime together filled with love and a commitment to each other’s best. Morgan & Chris O Y S T E R B AY YA C H T C L U B By Karen Miller

FOUR DAYS BEFORE CHRISTMAS IN 2010, MORGAN MURRAY WAS preoccupied with work when her dog, Millie, came over to her with an envelope hanging around her neck. Morgan opened the envelope, which contained a diamond ring, and found a note reading, “Will you Merry me?” Her boyfriend, Chris Stopher, then got down on one knee to propose properly, and the couple, who lived in Kentucky, headed off to Amelia Island to visit the bride’s family and share with them the surprise Christmas engagement news. Morgan’s mother, Terry Deaton, a former event planner, was thrilled to plan a destination wedding for her daughter on Amelia Island. She and Morgan chose the Oyster Bay Yacht Club because of its location and appeal. “Oyster Bay had 24 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

everything that I wanted in a venue,” says Morgan. “Ocean, marsh, live oak trees, charm, and indoor and outdoor seating for our guests. As soon as I saw it, I knew it was the place.” And, because the bride’s extended family also know a little something about entertaining and wedding planning, the whole family got in on the act. Morgan’s dad, Mitch, whose family owns Murray’s Grille, hosted the rehearsal dinner. Morgan’s stepdad, Mark, owns Resort Talent, a talent agency that provided a disc jockey, Herman Nazworth, and even a steel drum player, Larry App, for the ceremony. Mark helped the couple choose music that reflected their personal taste, as well as music their guests would enjoy, and they did, dancing the night away.

Morgan’s sister, Paige, a pastry chef for a local resort, provided the wedding cake. Morgan’s friend, Sarah Kearns-Baker, was ordained so that she could marry the couple at Oyster Bay. And Terry’s stepmom, Betty Schmidt, a former floral designer, created all the flower arrangements, using mostly gerber daisies (Morgan’s favorite), plus hydrangeas and roses. With a year-and-a-half of planning, Terry managed to come up with some exceptional ideas, including a huge floral monogram done in white mums and tiny lights that floated in the pool at the reception. “We didn’t have to do too much decorating at Oyster Bay, which is so pretty on its own. We went with a lot of shells and starfish,” says Terry. Though the family helped with the wedding, Terry and her daughter were grateful to Club Manager and Event Planner Terrie Sanders and her staff at Oyster Bay, whose expertise made the wedding a memorable event. “Because the weather called for rain,” recalls Morgan, “we were unsure about where to put everyone. But Terrie said, ‘Trust me, everything will be perfect,’ and it was!” The couple got married under the archway at Oyster Bay, surrounded by their 100 guests and the wedding party. Terry decided to offer shuttle service to the wedding guests, who were staying at various places around the island. Some rented beach houses on the ocean, while others stayed at Amelia Island’s various hotels. Amelia Island Transportation provided buses, picking up the guests at two locations and bringing them home after the reception. After the reception, Morgan and Chris spent two nights at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island and honeymooned for an entire week at Summer Beach Resort. Since Morgan grew up in Fernandina Beach before moving to Kentucky when she was 14, she wouldn’t have considered any other place to host her destination wedding. With her entire family living on Amelia Island, the couple jumps at every chance to visit. “Chris and I live in Kentucky,” she says. “But Fernandina Beach will always be my home.” AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 25

Frank & Shannon WALKER’S LANDING By Julie Simmons

Photography by Southern Smiles Photography

SHANNON AND FRANK BASILE KNOW THAT, IF ONE PLAN FAILS, there’s always another path to follow. Just ask Frank, who wanted to propose on a mountaintop that was just a bit too high for his bride-to-be; or Shannon, who dreamed of riding horseback from her wedding ceremony on the beach until a super storm visited Amelia Island on that weekend. But, the two kept their chins up —rolling with what life sent them—and the result, they learned, is sometimes better than the original plan. The couple met in 2010 at what is now The Courtyard Pub in downtown Fernandina Beach, where Frank often hosted “Frankie’s Jazz Jam,”a once-a-week night of improvised jamming led by Frankie on drums. A mutual friend invited Shannon McCarthy to go one evening, and, within the week, Frank found himself 26 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

horseback riding for the very first time. “It was our first date. Of course, I pretended to enjoy it!” Frank laughs, later confessing he was completely terrified. Two years later, Frank was introducing Shannon to snow skiing, but, unlike her man who braved the horse, pride didn’t interrupt her terror. “When he tried to get me to the top of the mountain (where I later learned he planned to propose), I told him I’d rather be on my horse!” So the couple detoured to the coast of Maine, and, sitting on a rock beside the ocean, he presented a bubblegum machine plastic ring box, which he gave her in jest from time-to-time. That day, Shannon found a diamond ring. Shannon, who had moved to Amelia Island with her family when she was a child, knew she’d wed on the island. Walker’s

Landing at Amelia Island Plantation was the ideal venue for the couple, because its canopy of oaks and backdrop of the Intracoastal Waterway provided the perfect backup ceremony location when Hurricane Sandy interfered with their plan to take their vows on the beach. “We were able to have the ceremony on the deck overlooking the marsh,” she explains. Shannon and Frank were honored when family and friends lent their talents to the celebration, and they used a lot of creative ideas to make their special day very personal. Good friend, Ross Brown, not only performed the nuptials, but he also serenaded the crowd and kept it celebrating all evening. Another friend, artist Brian Bernard, created a live painting during the reception. Guests watched the painting emerge, and then signed their names on the “wedding tree” he gifted as a keepsake for the couple. Another treasure to the bride was that her mother did all of the flowers and the table décor, and she presented each guest with homemade Goat

Milk Soap she’d made herself from her dairy goats. Longtime friend of the bride’s family, Chef Michael McCarroll, prepared the buffet. Since the wedding was on Halloween weekend, the couple took advantage of this fun time of year. “We had a screen with a Halloween image and a box of costumes, where guests dressed up and posed for a photo on which they wrote a note to us. We have an album full of laughs,” shares Shannon. They also offered FRANKenstein bags full of candy for each in attendance. The couple spent their wedding night at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, and, next day, they gathered with their guests for a Shrimp Boil at the bride’s parents’ ranch. “My dad prepared a feast, and a friend played the banjo around the campfire,” Shannon remembers fondly. Shannon and Frank are expecting a baby in February, and they will no doubt learn anew that having a Plan B ready is always a good idea! AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 27

VENUE SPOTLIGHT

Ocean Club of Amelia By Karen Miller

WHEN GEORGE AND MICHELLE STEWART RENOVATED SLIDERS Seaside Grill, they included an upstairs banquet room that would host weddings and parties for any occasion. But, as brides began inquiring about wedding receptions, the Stewarts saw a need for another venue – something that was a little more private, and not open to the public. To accommodate couples who were looking for more privacy, they purchased a romantic coastal cottage just two doors down from Sliders, directly on the beach, and turned it into the ideal wedding venue, calling it the Ocean Club of Amelia. Denease Taylor, Sliders’ event manager, has booked 34 weddings in the first year the Ocean Club has been open, and many other events as well. “Many of our brides want to get married on the beach and hold their reception within walking distance of the ceremony,” says Taylor. “But some don’t want to hold their 28 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

event in a restaurant or public place. Here, at the Ocean Club of Amelia, you can have it all.” The building is two stories tall, with beautiful views of the dunes and the Atlantic Ocean. The downstairs includes an enormous patio, dressing rooms for the bride and groom, restrooms, and a lounge area. “Many couples hold their cocktail reception on the first floor,” says Taylor. “How beautiful it is to walk up through the dunes to your wedding reception!” An ample staircase crowned with a beautifully crafted driftwood chandelier welcomes guests into the second-floor reception room. The upstairs venue holds tables and chairs for a sit-down dinner for 80, or a cocktail reception for 100. Large windows, oversized mirrors, and oyster shell lamps add to the bright, sunny ambience of this pretty oceanfront bungalow. A bar, kitchen, and front porch

offer all major conveniences, and easy beach access allows guests to come and go to the beach, if they wish. “We provide custom menus for every taste,” says Taylor. “We also have multiple bar packages, full catering services, and an experienced and professional staff.” An elevator makes the venue handicap accessible and provides ease of transport for decorations that the bride may want to bring to the wedding. “We provide all the linens and dishes, too,” says Taylor. “And the venue is so pretty that most brides don’t feel they need many decorations, except for centerpieces. The Ocean Club of Amelia stands on its own.” If a bride can think it, Taylor can make it happen. The staff and the Stewarts have thought of everything when it comes to weddings. The covered porches allow for a ready “Plan B,” in case the ceremony gets rained out. Taylor helps brides with their budgets, offering suggestions for flowers, photographers, and even music. With free wireless internet, Pandora, and a flat screen, the cottage makes for a worry-free wedding. Whether you prefer an island-casual bridal luncheon or elegant, sophisticated reception, the Ocean Club of Amelia is a trendy, yet charming place to hold your next event, ready to help you celebrate your wedding day against the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean and the natural beauty of Amelia Island. jewelry lifetime TO LAST A

By Karen Miller with Drew Scott WITH THE COLORFUL AND SHOWY TRENDS IN FASHION these days, you might be surprised to discover that today’s brides are going for more understated jewelry. Why is that? Drew Scott, owner of Scott & Sons Fine Jewelry, has the answer. “Today, it’s all about the bride,” he says. “The bride is the center of attention, and everything the bride wears, from her dress to her jewelry, must complement her, not outshine her.” And that unspoken trend continues down to the wedding party and wedding guests. Even bridesmaids are wearing simpler jewelry, mostly gold, plus classic pearls, studs, and unadorned necklaces. But a few new jewelry vogues are popular with brides in 2013, and one is rose or pink gold. Scott says it’s surprising how many women look beautiful in rose-colored gold. But just as many other brides still prefer platinum and traditional yellow gold for their engagement rings and wedding bands. And what is the most popular diamond cut today? “The cushion cut,” says Scott. “It is clearly 30 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

the most trendy diamond this year.” The cushion cut is neither square nor round, but a curved-corner diamond that resembles a cushion. Scott & Sons has been in business for five years on Amelia Island, and they employ a talented jeweler named Alex Henriquez. Originally from California, Henriquez creates rings and other jewelry using wax settings, and then he fits them with stones for brides to try on in the store. “This way, a couple can see what their ring will look like before we actually create it,” says Scott. “Many couples already have a family diamond they want us to use, or sometimes even two stones that will be joined into one ring, and Alex can create the design.” Henriquez also has photos of additional designs so clients can see all of their options. Scott points out that a jeweler can melt down old gold jewelry to create new pieces, and even add alloys to that gold to produce various colors, which provides a wonderful way to incorporate family jewelry and recycle at the same time. Giving jewelry as gifts to the wedding party has always been popular, and Scott sells many jewelry sets to brides. “A set that consists of earrings, necklace, and a bracelet is a nice gift for a bridesmaid,” says Scott. “The young lady will wear the set at the wedding, and then keep it as a thankyou gift and a memory piece.” For groomsmen, however, it is a different story. “Men’s jewelry is not very popular these days,” says Scott, which means cufflinks, necklaces, and bracelets are out, but pocket knives are in. “One of our most popular groomsman’s gift is a William Henry brand pocket knife,” confirms Scott. “The knives are art pieces, designed to last a lifetime.” With an ostrich leather case, the pocket knives are the perfect “guy” gift. Other men’s wedding gifts that Scott sells include writing instruments, money clips, and watches. Whether you’re looking for traditional wedding jewelry, vintage pieces, or creating an original design, visit your local jeweler to talk about your options. Go with the latest fashion, if that feels right, but remember—it’s your wedding, and the jewelry you choose should reflect your personality and create memories to last a lifetime. You may be passing that jewelry down to your son or daughter one day. Drew Scott is the owner of Scott & Sons Fine Jewelry, located at 9900 Amelia Island Parkway, Ste. 2, at the corner of A1A and Amelia Island Parkway. Do I need to let my friends or family bring a date to the wedding? If it is a spouse or significant other, they should be invited. Otherwise, you do not need to address the invitation with a “plus one.” You may feel the need to make an exception, but you don’t have to do that for everyone. If someone is in a relationship, whether you have met the person or not, then YES. If your guest is not in a relationship, NO.

rehearsal dinner? By Lisa Presnell, PWC

How do I tell my guests that children are not invited? This is always a tricky subject because you don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. The invitation should be addressed to those invited only. You want to be sensitive, but also pass the word around. Some couples offer numbers to local trusted babysitting services. And don’t make exceptions. Keep in mind that it is still appropriate to have a ring bearer and flower girl. I would have their parents make arrangements for the children to leave the reception prior to the late night festivities like dancing and the bouquet toss. Who hosts the bridal shower and/or bachelorette and how do I tell them what I want? Typically, the bridesmaids would host these. However, many times sisters, aunts, friends may choose to pitch in or host it as well. There is no set rule. It’s perfectly acceptable to let them know what you want, but don’t make demands that might affect the budget. Let them know the things you like and the things 32 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

If I am having a destination wedding, do I invite everyone to the rehearsal dinner? While it’s certainly nice to invite everyone to your rehearsal celebration, it’s not always practical or affordable. There are a number of options. You could host a nice intimate dinner in a restaurant, and then find a local pub or dance club that can host your group for late night drinks and see if they can offer drink specials for your party. Invite everyone to meet you for drinks. Word it in a fashion that they would know that you are not paying. For example, include a note in the invitation to those guests that are not invited to the rehearsal dinner that reads: “After our rehearsal dinner (date/time), we are meeting up with family and friends at (location). They have great drink specials and live music. Hope to see you there!” Do I have to address my invitation envelopes by hand or can I have them printed? Invitations should be addressed by hand. It’s much more personal. Not everyone has the greatest handwriting or can afford a calligrapher, so here’s a little secret: set up the envelopes to print in your printer at home. Find a beautiful font, and then print in the lightest gray possible until it shows up. Take your black fine tip pen and trace right over it. It may take a couple of tries to get the right font, color, and pen, but nobody will ever know. It’s our little secret. How much should I tip the vendors? The general rule is if the vendor is contracted, it will typically be stipulated and gratuity is added. However, this needs to be assessed based on your event. If you are using a five-star hotel, you can rest assured gratuity is added. If you are on a more modest budget and may have hired outside help, tipping should always be at your discretion. If someone has gone above and beyond, then by all means tip away. A gift is also a nice gesture in lieu of tipping for certain vendors, such as a wedding planner or personal helper. Cash is great for musicians, servers, and valet. Lisa M. Presnell is a Professional Wedding Consultant, Owner of Coastal Engagements, and lia sophia Fashion Advisor. Below: Bolero also Åirts with the sleeve in this ivory embroidered tulle, strapless trumpet gown from Monique Lhuillier. This time, the sleeve is included by way of a coverlet, which is hip this season in any form you can imagine. Brides may also be interested in the Ntrigue Headpiece, with frosted crystal and Åoral detail.

Above: Justin Alexander presents brides with a beautiful sleeve option in his all-over lace re-embroidered Alencon Ät and Åare gown. Equal to the beauty of the sheer lace sleeve is the beaded empire trim that introduces the second half of the gown, which concludes with a chapel length train Änished with satin buttons. The gown is offered in alabaster/ivory or white.

sophisticated sleeves This season’s Old Hollywood-inspired designs include the elegance of sleeves in a variety of styles. By Julie Simmons GREAT NEWS, BRIDES! THE FALL 2013 BRIDAL FASHION SCENE IS FULL of new and interesting selections. From detailed and cowl back gowns to sleeves and coverlets, the styles this season are as dashing as they are sophisticated. One of the biggest trends on the runway is to present the crown jewel of the gown on the backside. Many designers are offering open back gowns with a draped backline or cowl back that is incredibly romantic, while also being very elegant. Additionally, a detailed back of the dress adorned with a beautiful bow or a designed mesh overlay are great options. 36 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

And how about sleeves? This season is full of Old Hollywoodinspired fashion that includes sleeves and dresses in blush (for brides on whom white is not the most flattering palate). The sleeves are coming in unique shapes and presentation, including sheer straps, long lace, and cap—especially trendy, yet sophisticated, too. Justin Alexander is one designer presenting 1930’s Hollywood-style gowns this fall. Do not fear the modesty of the sleeve—it is being described as incredibly chic! Parallel with the Old Hollywood trend is the Great Gatsbystyle glam. This style demands beaded gowns and embroidery. All-

Below: Angel Sanchez’s Åoral lace gown is absolutely stunning with its illusion neckline accented with a tulle rufÅe. All eyes will be on the single-shoulder embroidered lace that offers a hint of the elegant sheer, cowl back of the dress, which is Änished in embroidered lace.

Justin Alexander offers a modest style in his illusion bateau neckline gown with a jeweled shoulder and Åutter cap sleeve. He does a nice job of experimenting with varying directions as he wraps the mermaid-style bodice in tulle that is Änished with a dose of Gatsby Glam by way of beading at the hip. Choose from alabaster/silver or white/silver.

Left: Elegant from the Ärst glance, Justin Alexander begins with a regal satin rolled collar, which accents his lace illusion Sabrina neckline. He moves to a satin basket weave cummerbund that cinches at the waist line. The lace and tulle pause in the back to introduce an open v-neckline, which Åows into a sheer with embroidered lace chapel length train.

over beading, beading with vine-like details, pearls of all sizes, metallic lace, and glitter tulle are all interesting options. Textured fabrics and column-style gowns are also very popular. You might consider experimenting with your gown’s length this fall. Shorter-length dresses with long sleeves have a 1960’s, “Jackie O” feel about them. They are a great option for non-traditional weddings, in which the bride may not wish to wear a formal gown. Alongside shorter dresses are dresses of varying lengths, including those with a high front slit to reveal one leg, which designers including Angel Sanchez and Monique Lhuillier are offering. Finally, coverlets of all types are hot, hot, hot! Be it a jacket, wrap, or something else, this is a great option for the bride who wants something on her shoulders. The coverlet—simple or dramatic—is versatile and can be added and removed to make for a completely different look as your special day unfolds. You’ll have no trouble finding them in lace, sheer, or beaded styles this season, and Oscar de la Renta is especially fond of the coverlet in his 2013 collection. Best wishes, Fall 2013 brides, and have fun shopping for your something new! 38 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

TRENDS IN

wedding Æowers Vintage & Rustic Meet Amelia Island By Julie Simmons SO MANY COUPLES, WHEN PLANNING THEIR WEDDING on Amelia Island, discover new ways to merge their individual styles with the island’s unique beauty and character. The current flower trends may exemplify this best. Brooke Raulerson, AIFD, of Artistic Florist and Gifts, explains that, in floral choices for 2013, “vintage and rustic meet Amelia Island.” So what exactly is vintage and rustic? “The formal floral and décor has been transferred to a casual, low-south type of feeling, with mason and antique jars. The feeling is delicate, with a muted presentation,” confides Amber Marvin, FSMD, the new owner of Island Flower and Garden. “But, I am also quick to say that brides can definitely pull off the vintage feel in a formal way—for example, grand candelabras dripping with blossoms and surrounded with classic vintage tablescape.” Local designers are following the trend of quieter colors and materials. “The ‘blush’ and 40 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

‘cameo’ colors are still the leading color schemes,” says Raulerson. “The jewel tones, accompanied by hints of coral, grey and peach, are also running a tight second.” These softer colors achieve the delicacy that brides are seeking in everything from their gowns to their décor. As for flower types, both designers are seeing dahlias, peonies, Queen Anne’s lace, zinnias, and field flowers—all choices that aren’t too showy. “And believe it or not, baby’s breath is back,” shares Marvin, “but it is being requested in mass groupings. This follows the overall style of simpler, less complicated centerpieces.” Baby’s breath’s light and elegant characteristics pair well with the laceappeal that is so popular this season. Roses continue as a foundation in bridal fashion, and the garden rose fits quite nicely with the rustic style. This fall is also a good time to try out some new textures. “As we move towards 2014, more than ever before, exotic and rare-find floral blooms are getting a fair amount of attention,” offers Raulerson. “Burlap continues to be a leader in accents from casual to formal weddings.” Alongside burlap, bark, twine, twigs, pinecones berries, citrus fruits, and vegetables can be found on this unique roster. One fun aspect of this season’s style is that it fluctuates from table to table and bouquet to bouquet, with brides asking for individual floral designs. “Brides are requesting two or three designs that can be uniquely used—for instance, featuring one or a combination—in each presentation,” explains Marvin. This change echoes the popularity of the 1920’s Great Gatsby era as a role model in all bridal style this season. “This floral trend at its peak has changed the design and interpretation of a traditional wedding into a grand display of individual unique floral designs that create a memorable event,” says Raulerson. Strategic use of lighting in the décor is another trademark of the season. A Raulerson favorite is to use an enormous number of candles surrounding taller centerpieces paired with mason jars. Marvin is having fun with lanterns. “We are using them all the time - grapevine balls filled with lights, Chinese lanterns, and natural pieces that complete the delicate flower presentation,” notes Marvin. Brides are also requesting painted twigs and are hanging crystals or votive candles from the branches. This is the season to have all the diversity you wish in your floral design. The designers are ready and willing to give your individual tastes a romantic Amelia Island feeling that creates just the right atmosphere for you and your guests to enjoy memorable moments together and celebrate your love and happiness.

ON AMELIA ISLAND

By Karen Miller AMELIA ISLAND HAS BEEN CONSISTENTLY NAMED ONE of the top destination islands in the United States, and that doesn’t surprise us Amelia Islanders! For those of us who live, work, and play on Amelia, we know how easy it is to fall in love with this beautiful barrier island, rich in breathtaking beauty and vibrant history. Because of the Amelia Island’s unspoiled ambience, it’s the perfect place for honeymooning couples. There are activities galore on Amelia, but plenty of time and space for newlyweds to be alone. With its ancient live oak trees dripping with Spanish moss, its pristine beaches, and saltwater marshes teeming with birds and wildlife, you’ll find the perfect balance of romance and splendor on our island paradise. Amelia Island abounds with world-class bed and breakfast inns, exclusive restaurants, and championship golf courses. If you love the outdoors, Amelia Island has lots to offer, from fishing and kayaking to surfing and biking. If relaxation is your preference, there are numerous places to enjoy spa treatments, yoga, music, art, and even theatre. Many couples who honeymoon on Amelia Island come back year after year, once they realize that their 44 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

vacation of a lifetime is accessible whenever they need a romantic getaway. If you’re looking to spend your honeymoon in a coastal paradise with authentic natural beauty and numerous recreational activities, Amelia Island welcomes you with open arms. In the center of Fernandina Beach, The Fairbanks House has been recognized as one of the most beautiful bed and breakfast inns in the country. Recently named the number one property in Conde Nast’s 2012 Gold List, the inn boasts striking Italianate architecture, along with rooms that are charming and comfortable, many with Jacuzzis and private porches. Innkeeper and owner Theresa Hamilton provides wine and chocolatecovered strawberries upon your arrival, as well as spa robes, upscale amenities, and free WiFi in the rooms. “We cater to romance,’ says Hamilton. “We are all about quiet, romantic getaways, and we can accommodate every need.” Several of the oversized rooms even have small kitchens and all rooms have coffeemakers. A two-course breakfast, complimentary use of bikes, a pool and beach equipment, along with evening beverages and hors d’oeuvres, round out the carefree pampering that couples will remember for a lifetime. Equally charming is The Amelia Island Williams House, a beautifully restored Victorian mansion on a quiet street close to the town center. This award-winning inn features charming spacious guest rooms with working fireplaces, baths with whirlpool tubs for two, elegant bedding, and all of the amenities you need for an atmosphere for romance and relaxation. Their honeymoon packages feature chocolate-dipped strawberries, dinners for two, and romantic horse-drawn carriage rides through the quaint seaside town. A threecourse gourmet breakfast is served each morning in the dining room, plus complimentary beverages and snacks are available all day, as well as bikes, beach towels, and guest chairs for relaxing on the beach. Innkeepers Byron and Deborah McCutchen invite you to sit on their wide verandahs underneath live oak trees dripping with Spanish moss while you “wine” down the day, and enjoy views of their serene gardens, fountains, and koi pond. The Hoyt House Bed & Breakfast, located in downtown Fernandina Beach, is an elegant 1905 Queen Anne-style mansion of gracious living of yesteryear. Known for its inviting guest and sitting rooms, three-course gourmet breakfast, and luxurious amenities, this inn speaks of romantic elegance. Honeymoon packages include chilled champagne and fresh roses in the room, the use of the inn’s bicycles, and a large heated pool and spa.

Honeymoon with the ocean at your doorstep.

In addition, the Hoyt House has a private two-bedroom, two-bathroom motor yacht available for full-day, overnight, or sunset cruises. Located just steps from the Atlantic Ocean is the Amelia Hotel at the Beach. This locally owned and operated hotel is convenient to area attractions, dining and shopping. “Our hotel offers spacious guest rooms with a location designed to leave guests with great memories at affordable prices,” says Holly Germano, General Manager. “Guests love the comfortable rooms with abundant amenities, Hot & Healthy Breakfast, as well as our evening refreshments—and our Lobby Lounge is the perfect place to enjoy a night cap.” If you’re looking for a small, intimate lodge where you can fall asleep to the sound of the surf, perhaps the Elizabeth Point Lodge is right for you. With architecture reminiscent of Nantucket, it combines the twenty-four-hour service of a large resort with the quaintness of a boutique hotel. Breakfast is served in an oceanfront sunroom, after which you can settle into the rocking chairs on the porch to finish the morning paper, before plunging into the beckoning waves. “The majority of our honeymoon couples have chosen our Tradewinds oceanfront suite, which is decorated in a West Indies motif, and includes its own private sunning porch,” says owner David Caples. “Add to that around-the-clock concierge service, and a friendly, knowledgeable staff, and you’re sure to have a very special experience.” Amelia Island is also a great jumping off place for other destinations. The Travel Agency, a local, full-service travel source, offers a network of contacts and experienced and well-traveled agents who can provide honeymoon packages with VIP status worldwide. Honeymooning couples are known return again and again to Amelia Island, to recreate their special day. It’s an extraordinary place where new lives begin, and memories are made to last a lifetime.
