LETTER FROM THE

AMELIA ISLAND IS MANY THINGS TO MANY PEOPLE. IT IS A SUN-DRENCHED PARADISE on the Atlantic Ocean perfect for vacations of any variety, whether revitalizing activity is your goal or you are seeking a moratorium on all activity. It is also a premier retirement community, with all the amenities and opportunities that someone preparing for the next phase of life might want. Or, if you are still engaged in raising a family, as we are, Amelia Island is a community with a welcoming, small-town feel, a place where it is easy to get connected and create a good environment for children of any age. That’s not a claim that many resort destination areas can make. Many such areas might have the sun, sand, and fun, but they aren’t necessarily places where one would want to settle down and stay. That’s what we have always found so special about Amelia Island: it is a place of great natural beauty, with unspoiled beaches, tranquil marshes stretching to the Intracoastal Waterway, and a charming historic downtown, but it is so much more than that, too. I suppose that is what separates Amelia Island from other sunny destinations. It is a place with a history, a place whose allure is not just skindeep. It is a place with roots, which is no small thing. Amelia Island has a particular culture, a spirit of

generosity and hospitality, which is tied undeniably to its Southern identity. It is tried and true, having entertained guests since the Victorian era, and it has never forgotten how to make someone feel at home here. Maybe that’s why it is so good at hosting meaningful events. If you are thinking about celebrating a wedding on Amelia Island, after you’ve checked all the boxes on the island’s stunning scenery, make sure you dig a little deeper and discover what makes this a truly special place: the people. In this issue, we are pleased to offer you another group of wonderful wedding couples, some with local roots. The wedding stories we are privileged to present here document what is likely the most important rite of passage in these couple’s lives. They are entering into something entirely new, a life lived together that will bring unknown challenges and joys. They stand at the threshold of this new life with hopes for a future filled with love and happiness, and we offer them our best wishes. We hope you will enjoy reading this issue of Amelia Island Weddings as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Whether you’re a resident, a frequent visitor, or a newcomer to Amelia, we hope our magazine will inspire you to imagine the extraordinary wedding possibilities available to you on this beautiful 13-mile-long barrier island.

entertainment and it is a great spot to enjoy after the ceremony or reception. Emily Saltmarsh is ready to help you with all of your wedding planning needs. For an intimate, romantic gathering in downtown Fernandina Beach, step into the Hoyt House, an elegant 1905 Queen Anne style ten-bedroom en suite mansion. Walk indoors through 11foot double French doors, where three gracious sitting rooms await, along with a baby grand piano playing your favorite compositions. Weekend guests enjoy luxurious shower gels and soaps, lush robes and wraps, a three-course gourmet breakfast, and lounging in the terry-covered chaise lounge chairs by the pool and spa. Innkeeper Deborah Gold says: “Come home to The Hoyt House. We will exceed your expectations!” Paradise awaits your wedding guests at the Blue Heron Inn on Amelia Island. Experience the warmth and elegant comfort of a nineteenth-century home transformed into a beautiful Florida bed-and-breakfast. The inn offers full-service planning of your event to ensure it’s a perfect celebration of your life together. Located in the heart of the National Historic District of Fernandina Beach, the Blue Heron Inn Bed and Breakfast is only steps away from Amelia Island’s beautiful picturesque Victorian island village, close to restaurants, shopping, music, and art galleries. If you are looking for more room for your wedding party, the Hampton Inn & Suites Historic Harborfront Hotel might just be the answer. Director of Sales Bill Pennington says, “‘Location! Location! Location!’ is an old advertising term, but it really does apply as to why so many brides pick our unique destination.” Located on the Intracoastal Waterway overlooking the Fernandina Beach Marina, the Hampton Inn & Suites offers spacious and comfortable accommodations. Take advantage of staying in the heart of the historic district—a short walking distance to many of the island’s renowned restaurants and shops. The Hampton Inn & Suites can accommodate weddings and receptions from five to 85, and offers specialty suites for all types of brides. Room types include traditional rooms, two-room suites, and deluxe whirlpool rooms. For those seeking a truly special place to rest, a stunning 12 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

bridal suite and a high-class presidential suite are also available. Pennington can provide you with all the information you need and help you with all of your wedding accommodations. Joe’s 2nd Street Bistro, located in the heart of the historic downtown, can also graciously accommodate wedding receptions, rehearsal dinners, and private parties. Joe’s has ample seating room upstairs and down, with a second-story porch that overlooks the Fernandina Beach harbor, as well as a lush, New Orleans-style courtyard. Their helpful staff will help you design the perfect menu of carefully prepared and delicious food for your wedding celebration, and Joe’s has an excellent wine cellar to compliment whatever menu you choose. Of course, being by the beach also means enjoying the casual beach atmosphere like at The Crab Trap in historic downtown Fernandina Beach. Located on South 2nd Street, this restaurant is a great place for a rehearsal dinner or small reception. The Crab Trap has been a local favorite for 26 years. Owned and operated by the Germano family, The Crab Trap’s nautical décor, friendly service, and great food make it the perfect place for a special Fernandina Beach celebration. The Crab Trap serves fresh local seafood, as well as steaks, lobster, chicken, and oysters. With banquet facilities, a private dining room overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway, two full bars, and two fireplaces, The Crab Trap can accommodate your every need. Nestled under the live oaks in Palmetto Walk, Bar Zin is a chic neighborhood bistro that’s all about having fun with family and friends, while enjoying great American bistro food and wine. What better place for a very special gathering of friends and family? With an outdoor brick-paved courtyard under the canopy cover of the live oaks, as well as a wraparound porch and elegant dining room and bar, the indoor and outdoor spaces are ready to welcome small intimate parties, or larger gatherings of up to 49 people. (The courtyard can hold another 49.) Whether it’s a rehearsal dinner, a bridal luncheon, a small reception, or just a gathering of friends, owner Tim Seyda’s passion for excellent wine and food and his attention to detail promise to make every event one to remember. Located in downtown Fernandina Beach, David’s Restaurant is an upscale steakhouse and seafood restaurant with a sophisticated atmosphere and professional service, which makes it the perfect place for your special wedding event. David’s has two event areas available for your gathering. A private wine room is perfect for intimate gatherings and will accommodate up to twelve guests. were welcomed with Kraft paper bags stamped with the couple’s monogram and filled with commissioned maps of local activities by Martha Penn Grace Designs and Avalee’s favorite Peterbrooke chocolate-covered popcorn. Guests stayed at The Residence Inn Amelia Island and the Hampton Inn Amelia Island, while the wedding party stayed at the historic Florida House Inn. “It was perfect for us to be together at a place so central to everything Fernandina,” the bride explains. The weekend commenced Thursday with a welcome party hosted by the bride’s mother, Terri. “T-Rays catered friend chicken and greens,” Avalee reminisces, “and we prepared all the guests for the fun ahead by gifting hangover kits that my aunt designed and assembled with recovery supplies one might need.” On Friday, the guys enjoyed golf at The Golf Club at North

Hampton, while the girls mingled at a bridesmaid’s luncheon at The Amelia Island Club on Amelia Island Plantation. That evening, the wedding party was treated to a shrimp boil at the Florida House Inn, and then gathered with other out-of-town guests for a “Cupcakes and Cocktails” reception catered by Bliss Cupcakery. “Scott plays the guitar, so we had a guitar made of cupcakes in honor of him that night,” smiles Avalee. On the day of the wedding, the bridal party gathered at Julie Bennett’s retreat on the Nassau River for a peaceful morning together, eating Chick-fil-A breakfast and sipping mimosas during their hair and makeup treatments. Gourmet Gourmet provided lunch for the ladies as they laughed and enjoyed the beauty of the bride, her gown, and the handmade monogrammed veil crafted by Avalee’s aunt. AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 15

The ceremony took place at First Presbyterian Church, Fernandina Beach, and was officiated by Rev. Dr. Wain Wesberry. “I just love the classic white church,” says Avalee. “The only décor we used were white hydrangea baskets on every other pew. We did not wish to disturb the beauty of the sanctuary.” The Peck Community Ensemble entertained guests with “Going to the Chapel” and later “Oh, Happy Day” when the couple was announced at the end of the ceremony. And then there was the reception. With the touch of Brett Carter, Walker’s Landing was transformed for the DeLays with rounds tables featuring white and navy linens, upon which sat blue 16 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

and white antique jars filled with white hydrangeas and freesia, and finished with mahogany seating. The fireplace mantle bore silver-framed family wedding photos and a large wreath with the couple’s monogram inside. On the screened porch, Brett created a boxwood hedge which served as the bar – adding a natural, rustic touch—as everyone danced the night away to the music of the Swinging Medallions. “When guests ordered drinks, they were served on the hedge. It looked like a classic English Garden,” smiles Brett. Of course, Brett catered all the food, including the four-tiered wedding cake. The guests raved about the crab fritters, pimento

cheese BLT sliders, fried okra, boiled peanuts, and grits station. “The food and décor were classy and Southern, but not country,” Brett explains. “We tried to fill each detail with the things Avalee loved so the day felt like it belonged to her.” Perhaps the funniest detail was the fried chicken fingers, complete with a sign stating, “Avalee’s Favorite.” “I grew up eating chicken fingers and drinking milk at Brett’s Waterway Café,” Avalee laughs. “Of course I had to serve them on my wedding day!” As the night drew to conclusion, Avalee changed for her going away into a lace and linen dress her mother wore for her wedding, finished with none other than a pair of Jack Rogers’ sandals bearing

her brand new monogram! Guests left with a monogrammed “D” package of Peterbrooke white chocolate covered Oreos as they waved red and black UGA pom-pom shakers and cheered the couple, who boarded William Lorick’s navy-and-green Model-A. Amelia Island Trolleys provided wedding party transportation to and from Walker’s Landing. The couple spent their honeymoon in Abaco Islands in the Bahamas, before settling back home in Dalton, Georgia, where they enjoy their favorite things: their yellow lab, Otis; playing tennis; cheering the University of Georgia Bulldogs at games; and —most importantly—each other. Dana & Todd O Y S T E R B AY YA C H T C L U B By Karen Miller Photography by Michelle Arnold, Journey Happy Photography WHEN YOUR MOTHER IS MANAGER AND EVENT COORDINATOR AT Oyster Bay Yacht Club, you can be pretty certain that your wedding is going to be perfect. And, for bride Dana Owens and her mother, Terrie Sanders, it was. “One of the things I love about my daughter is that she was so excited about marrying her best friend,” says Terrie. “She left most of the details and planning to me and her sister, Tiffany, an interior designer. Everything went so smoothly, and Dana was so happy!” Oyster Bay conducts over 100 weddings each year, thanks to the expertise of Terrie and her staff, but there are always a few jitters when it comes to your own daughter’s wedding. “That morning, it was raining cats and dogs. We had a tent set up just for that reason,” remembers Terrie. “But the sun came out at 3 p.m., and the wedding couldn’t have been more perfect.” In 2010, Dana met her beloved, Todd, at the University of North Georgia, where they were both studying to be physical therapists. They were friends for a year before they started dating. “Todd and I used to study together and just hang out,” says Dana. “We spent a lot of time together, dating, being goofy, and having fun. We enjoyed a lot of the same things – golfing, boating, and fishing.” On one of those boating trips during a visit to Amelia Island, Todd took Dana to nearby Bird Island. They went for a walk on the deserted beach, and that’s when he proposed. The couple became engaged in October 2013, and they celebrated their marriage at Oyster Bay this year in the spring.

18 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

The wedding ceremony was held under the tent on the front lawn of the club, officiated by Bill Comai, a pastor with the Journey Church, and the reception held on the upstairs deck overlooking the marsh and marina. An acrylic dance floor was constructed over the pool, and guests danced their hearts away after the wedding feast, which was expertly prepared and served by the Oyster Bay staff. But the best part of the wedding was a special surprise from Todd. “Dana’s new hubby, Todd, is a little on the quiet side, with a great since of humor,” states Sanders. “We absolutely adore him, and he stole everyone’s heart at the end of the wedding night when he surprised Dana and sang a song he wrote to his bride. It was truly one of the sweetest moments ever!” Dana and Todd used numerous local vendors for their wedding. Out-of-town guest stayed at the Hampton Inn & Suites

in downtown Fernandina Beach, Janet Lynn Salon provided the hair and makeup, Dottie B designed all the flowers, Chillula, a St. Augustine band, provided the music, while Amelia Island Trolleys brought the guests to and from the event. After the wedding, Dana and Todd spent their honeymoon in California, driving up the coast and visiting wine country. Today, the couple lives in Athens, Georgia where they are both working as physical therapists, the occupation that brought them together from the start. “As club manager of Oyster Bay Yacht Club, I’ve had the privilege of being a part of hundreds of weddings,” says Terrie. “I love planning the dream, and then witnessing my amazing team deliver the dream. However, as mother of the bride, I had the amazing opportunity to experience the dream myself. My daughter’s wedding day was absolutely magical.” AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 19

Mallory & Chaise SLIDERS SEASIDE GRILL By Julie Simmons

Photography by Shannon Kapparis Photography

A WOODEN SIGN LABELED, MALLORY & CHAISE, SAVED THE SPOT ON the sand behind Sliders Seaside Grill in Fernandina Beach this past June—the day Mallory Zobel said “I do” to her high school sweetheart and groom, Chaise Rubek. Mallory & Chaise fell in love while playing in the band together at West Nassau High School. In December 2012, Chaise proposed mountainside, which was appropriate because the couple loves nature, outdoors, and exploring new terrain. “Because we love the outdoors, we knew we’d be married on the beach.” Mallory explained that they never considered anywhere other than the beach at Sliders Seaside Grill, where they love to go on the weekends. “Sliders is so much fun, and it seemed like the perfect place for our reception. After we toured it, we never considered another venue.” 20 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

“We are really proud of our newly renovated party space at the restaurant, as well as the more intimate venue, The Ocean Club of Amelia, next door,” explains the new Director of Catering, Nigel Teare, who came to Amelia Island from New York City this past spring. “The beach is just gorgeous behind us, and, for the Rubeks, the sunset made for a beautiful setting—a true reward after the couple’s hard work planning their special day.” When the wedding weekend arrived, the bride and her bridesmaids checked into Days Inn & Suites Amelia Island at the beach, alongside out-of-town guests. The couple was committed to making sure the beach-themed event covered every aspect, and a gazebo at Fernandina Beach Main Beach was the perfect setting for the rehearsal dinner cookout.

When Mallory arrived at the beach for the 5:30 p.m. ceremony, she was all smiles at the yellow and orange bows decorating the white chairs and the perfectly matching gerbera daisy, lily, and wildflower bouquets designed by Dottie “B” Florist. A second wooden sign greeted guests, reading “Pick a Seat, Not a Side, Shoes Optional!” This was quite suitable to match the barefooted groomsmen and the bridal party, who were decorated with beaded, bottomless flip-flops! Amelia Island Beach Weddings orchestrated a perfect day by reserving and manicuring the beach area, setting up the chairs, arbor, and sound equipment, and securing an officiant. The bride walked to her groom in her sweetheart neckline, tea-length with polka-dot embroidered lace gown, while a friend of the couple played the guitar. A favorite part for the couple was the sand ceremony, where they married orange and yellow sand together in a jar. Following the ceremony, guests strolled to Sliders’ upstairs, oceanfront dining room, where the reception was held. Each table was charmingly decorated in golds, oranges, and yellows with sand and shell-filled glass containers and candlelight. “The couple really wanted a sophisticated feel to the event,” explains Nigel, “and we created the wedding they wanted—complete with all the components the couple envisioned a wedding should have.” Seashell framed place cards directed guests to their tables during the cocktail hour before they proceeded to the buffet and enjoyed the locally Southern-inspired New American Cuisine. Publix designed an absolutely delicate three-tiered ivory cake ornamented with coral and edible chocolate seashells. The couple’s friend, DJ Dalton Rapoza, entertained everyone and played Jack Johnson’s “Better Together” to which the couple danced—a song the groom chose as a surprise for his bride. When it was time to leave, the couple cherished one last walk together on “their” beach before retiring in preparation for a honeymoon to Puerto Rico. Today, the young, happily married Mallory and Chaise are studying at University of Florida in Gainesville and love exploring new countrysides with their puppy, Shipley. AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 21

Judy & Richard BLUE HERON INN By Julie Simmons

JUDY AND RICHARD POULIN ARE A LOVE STORY THAT SPANS THE globe, yet Amelia Island was the perfect destination to say “I do” this past June. Judy was born in Taiwan, while Richard moved with his Marine Corps family from California to Japan and, finally, Thailand, where he met Judy in 2004. “We are what’s called ‘third culture kids,’” Richard explains. “We have different birthplaces than where we live, were educated, and work, so it’s a hodgepodge of cultures.” Of course, American wedding customs are wellknown in every culture around the world. “Oh yes, Judy expected an American engagement!” he confirms. “I gave her diamond earrings for Valentine’s Day, and I saw the disappointment on her face. Hiding a smile, I shared a short poem with her, then asked her to marry me with a ring that I had made for my princess.” 22 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

Most brides suffer enough stress over planning one wedding, but, in this case, the couple planned three! “We wished to celebrate with our friends in Thailand, and we wanted a wedding with our families as well.” That means family in the United States and Taiwan. In June, the couple hosted a celebration for three hundred friends at The Grand Millennium Hotel Bangkok. “Judy is a princess, so the wedding was a princess wedding! A special part of the day was an iron-cage horse carriage we had for photographs,” Richard explains. Just twelve days later, the couple arrived at the Blue Heron Inn on Amelia Island, located in the Historic District at the corner of Ash and Seventh Streets. Richard grew up traveling to Florida and he adores the beauty of the trees, the hanging Spanish moss, and the natural beauty. Amelia Island was the perfect choice to

enjoy the Southern outdoors, and the Blue Heron Inn was the ideal venue for a couple seeking a royal wedding. “When we decided to become innkeepers, David and I created a motto: ‘Elegant Comfort,’” smiles innkeeper Julie Jones. “We created an oasis here where guests are treated like royalty, yet like family at the same time, if you can imagine that. We serve gourmet breakfasts on fine china and crystal, but guests dine outdoors on our front wrap-around porch watching Fernandina’s morning activities.” The Inn boasts a beautiful wedding garden, which was in full bloom for their ceremony, including a wisteria-covered pergola. Judy wore an ivory satin gown, halo of baby’s breath, and a bouquet of pink and ivory roses. Lisa Presnell of Coastal Engagements officiated. “The celebration in Thailand was fun,” reflects the couple, “but it was for our guests. Our small wedding in Amelia Island was truly special because it was about us, and we could relax with our family.” Heather Kittle of Confidence Photography captured the event on film. “Because the wedding here was so private and intimate, it had special meaning,” confirms Julie. “That’s what we love about hosting weddings. We are a small inn (six private guest rooms) and we are able to cater to each couple’s unique and special needs. We get to know the couple and their family, and before they leave, they even feel like family to us!” The couple loved being in the heart of Fernandina Beach’s Historic District. After the ceremony, Richard led his bride to a live horse-drawn carriage courtesy of Amelia Island Carriages. Later, the party gathered at Espana Restaurant for dinner and a wedding cake prepared by Chez Lezan Bakery. “Judy wasn’t familiar with the American wedding custom of feeding each other cake,” Richard laughs. Guests cheered as Richard smeared just a little icing on his bride. The couple crowned their perfect day with a tour of the Amelia Island nightlife. “The best part of an Amelia Island wedding is looking forward to returning for anniversaries,” says Richard. As husband and wife, Richard escorted his princess bride to an airplane bound for their third celebration with Judy’s family in Taiwan in July. Today they live in China, teaching at a premier international boarding school, Keystone Academy. AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 23

Lauren & Jason WALKER’S LANDING By Karen Miller

Photography by Pam Bell Photography

WHEN LAUREN ARNDT MET JASON PARKER, SHE KNEW HE WAS special. The couple met through mutual friends in 2010 while attending the University of Florida. “It was definitely love at first sight,” says Lauren. “Jason asked me out for dinner and a movie. It was very romantic. While other college couples were hanging around at the bars, we were going on real dates. We had so many dinner and movie dates! Jason was a true gentleman.” The couple became engaged on Jekyll Island and considered having their wedding there. But when Lauren’s sister’s wedding coordinator suggested Amelia Island for a destination wedding, the couple thought they would visit the island and see for themselves. Their plan was to check out various event locations, but at their first stop, the Omni Resort at Amelia Island Plantation, Lauren knew that was the place. “We loved the Omni,” says Lauren. “And 24 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

we loved the charm of Walker’s Landing, the live oak trees with Spanish moss, the marsh, the natural wood inside the building. We knew we didn’t want a ballroom. It was exactly the Old Florida-style look that we were looking for.” Lauren and Jason decided to hold their ceremony at Amelia Plantation Chapel and their reception at Walker’s Landing, catered by the Omni. Because of their traditional values, the couple also wanted traditional, romantic décor, featuring silver candelabras, pink bridesmaid dresses, and time-honored tuxedos with tails. Instead of numbering their banquet tables, they named the tables after various places they had visited together, including “Sanibel Island” and “Walt Disney World.” They created welcome buckets for all their guests, and made special weekend plans for their 120 visitors. Activities included yoga on the beach, golf, skeet shooting,

and a bridal luncheon. “We held our rehearsal dinner at Café Karibo,” remembers Lauren. “But our guests spent most of their time at the Omni Resort because there was so much to do. We wanted the wedding weekend to feel like a real vacation.” Jason surprised his new bride with a special exit from the wedding ceremony—a horse-drawn carriage, provided by Jacksonville Carriages. “I love carriage rides,” says Lauren. “We took a sleigh ride in the Alps once, and that was on my bucket list. It was so romantic!” And Lauren surprised Jason with a groom cake—a replica of Bristol Motor Speedway because he enjoys NASCAR. They even made special signs for their chairs at the reception. Hers was “Pit Chief” and his was “Pit Crew.” A sense of humor and a love for romance and tradition gave the couple a true vision while they were planning their wedding. The wedding photography was provided by Amelia Island photographer Pam Bell. A pod of dolphins frolicking just off the beach and a beautiful sunset made their wedding day even more special. And their two week trip honeymoon to Thailand—another bucket list choice—was a wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime trip. Today Lauren and Jason live in Fort Myers, Florida. She is a marketing and development manager with Coca-Cola, and he is a field manager with Pulte Homes. A trip back to Amelia Island is certain to be in their future.

VENUE SPOTLIGHT

Bar Zin Bistro & Wine Bar By Karen Miller

Photography courtesy of Bar Zin Bistro & Wine Bar

TIM SEYDA’S ORIGINAL CONCEPT FOR HIS RESTAURANT BAR ZIN WAS for a wine bar with a tapas food menu, but when he saw the available space at the Palmetto Walk Shopping Village, all that changed. The Palmetto Walk location set up perfectly for a quaint, neighborhood American bistro, and as the perfect venue for a cozy wedding reception or rehearsal dinner. Seyda’s philosophy is to create a casual yet elegant and upbeat atmosphere where couples, families, and friends can enjoy creative, fresh cuisine and diverse beverages consisting of fine wines, local brews, and Saki martinis. Whenever possible, Seyda utilizes local farmers, local products, and local businesses to create a farm-to-table style menu ideal for any intimate event. “Bar Zin has room for 100 guests,” says Seyda, “and you can rent the entire restaurant or part of the restaurant. Our private 28 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

dining room holds 40 guests, and there is an outside patio as well.” Bar Zin opened in July 2011, and so far it has hosted numerous wedding receptions, rehearsal dinners, bridal showers, and other private events. “I like to sit down with our clients and design a special menu just for them. We don’t have standard banquet menus. I believe that each event is different and special, and that’s how we plan our menus.” Bar Zin can provide anything that couples are looking for, from special linens to flowers, music, and more. Often, the Bar Zin staff will set the tables with linens, and the bride or bridesmaids will provide their own decorations. One particular wedding reception involved an “East Meets West” menu, since the bride was Asian and the groom was American. Seyda offered an array of Asian specialties and also American favorites, much to the delight

of the guests. “We made sushi and pork sliders!” exclaims Seyda. “It was a great event and the couple loved it.” Seyda’s concept for his restaurant began over 30 years ago when he was attending the University of Minnesota. During this time, he also worked downtown at Les Quatre Amis, a high-end classic French restaurant. After leaving Les Quatre Amis, he opened a fivediamond regional American restaurant for Amfac Hotel Company. The chef at the French restaurant, Rene Debon, and the general manager, Carlo Bicacci, were Seyda’s two mentors. “Rene’s passion and intensity in the kitchen to insure that every dish was perfect has

stuck with me over all these years,” says Seyda. “And Carlo’s eye for attention to the smallest detail day after day was also very inspiring.” That training, along with Seyda’s passion and zest for life, has made Bar Zin one of the most beloved restaurants on Amelia Island, and a favorite wedding reception venue. Bar Zin is located in the Palmetto Walk Shopping Village at 4924 First Coast Highway. They are open Tuesday through Saturday, but special events can be arranged for any time. For more information on planning an event at Bar Zin, call (904) 310-2260 or visit www.barzin-bistro-winebar.com. AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 29

TRADITIONAL & CONTEMPORARY

bridal jewelry By Karen Miller with Gigi Grubner

JEWELRY IS ONE OF THE MOST BASIC PARTS OF FASHION, and a woman’s favorite way to dress up her wardrobe —especially her wedding attire. As trends come and go in fashion, so they do in the bridal industry, and more and more jewelers are seeing an interesting trend develop: creating and wearing wedding jewelry that is unique and different. Gigi Grubner, owner of Amelia’s Fine Jewelry, has twenty-two years of experience in the jewelry industry, and she is never surprised when trends go from traditional to contemporary, then back again. “Yellow gold is coming back strong,” says Gigi. “That’s a very traditional look. But, for some brides, rose gold is what they’re looking for. It all depends on their personal preferences.” Because some brides coming into Amelia’s Fine Jewelry are getting married for a second time, a traditional diamond is not always what they’re looking for in an engagement ring. “Colored gemstones are very popular now, like sapphires, maybe circled with smaller diamonds,” says Gigi. 30 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

The halo remains a popular engagement ring style. It is a stunning style that features a “halo” circle or a border of diamonds surrounding a center diamond. A halo ring emphasizes and enhances the center stone, increasing the perceived diamond size, the diamond’s brilliance, and the overall visual impact of the diamond. Other brides like to take their family’s heirloom jewelry and have them crafted into new pieces, perhaps a new engagement ring, or a necklace. What Gigi has noticed is that she never knows what ideas a bride and groom will have when they come into the store. “Each couple is different, and we’re always delighted to produce a piece of jewelry that they have envisioned.” Gigi has also noticed that longer “chandelier” earrings have come into style recently, while traditional pearl studs have taken a back seat on the wedding scene. These longer earrings can be up to three inches long, creating an opulent, dazzling look for young brides. Chandeliers can include pearls, diamonds, crystals, and other gemstones, can be made from gold or silver, and offer a romantic, vintage-style look. Matching bracelets and necklaces complement the vintage look. Another thing that can be used as bridal jewelry are decorative crystal hair combs. If a bride is not planning on using a veil, using hair combs in her hair will add a lot of sparkle and upgrade her look. Hair combs are impressive regardless of a bride’s hairstyle. They work equally well with hair that is elaborately styled and hair that is very simple and elegant. Because many of the weddings are held on or near the beach, brides like to purchase islandstyle gifts for their bridesmaids, which could be anything from Larimar bracelets to pearls, gold palm trees, starfish, and diamond jewelry. Unique designer pieces and historic jewelry are magnificent ways to make wedding memories for members of the wedding party. For the groomsmen, gifts often include pocket knives, clocks, flasks, and money clips. Jewelry shops like Amelia’s Fine Jewelry have gift catalogues that make gift shopping easy and enjoyable, and they are a great way to shop for distinctive wedding gifts for the bride and groom. Gigi Grubner is owner of Amelia’s Fine Jewelry, a familyowned and operated jewelry store located at 317 Centre Street in historic downtown Fernandina Beach. This example of Monique Lhuillier trendsetting is her "Escape" gown which offers an oh-so feminine tulle Åoral embroidered 3-d skirt. The use of lots of tulle is catchy this season, and this gown is wrapped in it from the tulle covering at the neckline to the bottom of the exaggerated drop waist gown.

Sassy is the word for Angel Sanchez’s sleeveless knee-length A-line wedding dress. The conservative halter neckline is quickly tamed with a column of buttons to introduce the peekaboo, cut-out detail on the lower part of the gown’s backside.

Right: Angel Sanchez pushes the limits again with his strapless sheath wedding gown. The cropped center which made its debut this season is offered here with embroidered lace, but as Sanchez likes to do, he distracts from the shock with a fascinating matching cape that begins with a lace mock-neck.

By Julie Simmons BRIDES, IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING UNIQUE THIS SEASON IN wedding fashion, then walk into the wedding gown casino ready to play! The traditional wedding gown is being pushed to its limits this year, with capes, collars, and crop-top dresses making a big appearance on the bridal fashion runways. I know you’re dying to hear about it, so let’s get started. As unusual as it might seem, non-traditional ball gowns with a bit of midriff showing were all over the runways, note many bridal fashion experts. For the bride who wants a bit more coverage, designers are having lots of fun with conservative capes and collars. Both of these styles create drama and a very royal type of allure. The cape is especially fun because it’s a convertible 32 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

option that can be added or removed for a different look from ceremony to reception and it includes hand-embroidered floral and meticulously beautiful sheer lace options, making it a far cry from Dracula’s favorite accessory. Last season, brides were told to think pink, but this season there is a sudden shift to new colors, including blues, grays, greens—including mint—and even metallic. Monique Lhuillier is enjoying working with color in her new line, but that is not the only thing hot in her design. Very popular with Lhuillier and many other designers are tulle and silk overskirts. “Tulle overskirts are popular for good reason: they’re not only pretty to look at, but they give brides a big effect for the ceremony, with a built-in

Classic and romantic, Angel Sanchez’s backless lace trumpet gown offers a deep v-neckline. But don’t let that stop you, Sanchez is pairing sexy with conservative this season as seen here with the attached, beautifully embroidered lace cape with a jewel neckline.

short reception dress hidden underneath,” says Brides Magazine at brides.com. In addition to tulle skirts are eye-catching, dropped-waist wedding dresses. Designers love this style because they follow it up with a full skirt, often with feminine details like ruffles, tulle, and even beading. Brides have a great chance to have that fitted detail to accentuate their waist line, yet still wear the ball-gown style full skirt. The past couple of years, designers have offered many vintage lace and beading options, but this season, the glamour is shifting to more structured designs like lattice netting and column beadwork. One of my favorites this season is the basket-weave-style lattice designs Angel Sanchez and Monique Lhuillier are introducing it in large and small styles, creating a look that has been described as dramatic yet timeless. beading, which has a slimming effect. Although vintage has slowed a bit, lace is still prevalent on the runways. Absolutely stunning is the lace-embellished back of the dress, which continues this season. Finally, how about unique off-the-shoulder necklines? Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera are two designers creatively presenting this romantic and timeless style. The best part of it is that the design is diversely unique from gown to gown and really draws the attention to the upper part of the bodice for figureflattering charm. The various shapes this scheme offers move from triangled neck and sleeve lines to the neckline introducing the waistline, all offering appeal in each and every presentation. So brides, if you are looking for tradition, you’re going to love the lace and the cape, but if you’re ready for a risk, all options are on the table. May you cash in a fortune of love and bliss this wedding season!

By Julie Simmons WEDDINGS ON AMELIA ISLAND ARE ALWAYS INTRIGUING, as brides here effortlessly introduce new ideas in décor, fashion, flowers, food, and fun into their celebrations. I absolutely love it when a couple’s individuality and personality shine through! But, as we look ahead, let’s not forget to glance over our shoulder and remember that weddings themselves are a rich part of tradition, marking important touchstones in our history. As you take pride in your something “new,” don’t forget to incorporate precious gifts that can be passed from generation to generation. Let’s start with family. What’s more traditional than family, such as family pearls, the family Bible, the family china, or just plain family? Dust them off and use them! Whitney and Scott Chicco knew they wanted lots of family participation in their wedding celebration. “For us, having family as part of the wedding was a must.” One memorable moment of the Chiccos’ day was when Scott’s sister read a prayer she had written for the wedding couple during the 36 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

ceremony. At my wedding to my husband, Greg, my preacher father officiated, and we surprised the groom’s family by inviting their own family pastor to take part with him. Another important tradition is honoring deceased family members. Kayla and Brian Blackwell displayed a table of grandparents’ photos. A wonderful way to remember loved ones is for the bride to wear an heirloom broach, or carry a grandmother’s handkerchief or other sentimental item. “It was 38 years ago when I carried a small, white Bible under my flowers,” smiles Pam Simmons. Brooke Raulerson, owner of Artistic Florist, said she is seeing lots of brides incorporating Bibles into their bouquets this year. Of course, it’s common to honor family by inviting them to be part of the wedding party, but when the list gets too long, you might explore having what is called a “house party.” The house party attendants help with showers, parties, wedding day tasks, and sit in front with the family, but do not stand at the altar with the official bridal party. I served in Allyson and Brian Etheridge’s house party with several other girls. We enjoyed working with the bridesmaids to make Allyson’s wedding season a gem. China and crystal scream wedding tradition, but how about a visit to Grandma to borrow hers for the big day? Some brides are collecting lots of pieces and using them for the reception, while others are using dinner plates in a hutch with messages inscribed on them for guests, or as general décor. Wedding vows are an important ritual in most ceremonies, but how about using your parents’ vows? Or think about family vows, as the Mustos did. “We are a blended family, and my husband said vows to my children, and then we gave them each rings so that the ceremony included all of us and joined us together as a family,” explains Kim. Other couples are even reciting vows to their parents before speaking them to each other. And don’t forget the groom’s cake! Brides, this is your chance to honor your man in the midst of all the glory the day bestows upon you. Or maybe it’s not a cake. Lauren Mathewson presented Dairy Queen Blizzards—his favorite—to her husband, Grayson. Along with the cake is the tradition of a wedding beverage, such as a specialty martini, personalized bottles of wine like Jessica and Terry Turner used, or sweet tea in a mason jar. Speaking of drinks, Southerners say that if you bury a bottle of bourbon upside down one month before the wedding at the wedding site, it will not rain on your day! In closing, let me leave you with a quote from Paula McLain’s The Paris Wife. “To marry was to say you believed in the future and in the past, too— that history and tradition and hope could stay knit together to hold you up.”

Æowers and design Romance and glamour highlight new trends in wedding flowers and decoration. By Julie Simmons POP QUIZ, BRIDES: WHEN IT COMES TO FLOWERS, is the correct answer romance, glamour, or both? No studying required—the answer is, “Yes!” Feeling romantic? White on white is the trend of trends. While white is nothing new to weddings, it’s finding a new elegance in solo presentation. “Peonies, hydrangeas, ranunculus, amaryllis, and garden roses are still favorites for creating the lush, multi-petal textures desired by our brides in pure whites, creamy ivories, and dusty wintery colors,” confirms Brooke Raulerson, AIFD, of Artistic Florist and Gifts. But white isn’t all that’s in the romance queue. “Just like in fashion, new colors are emerging in flower and décor trends, including pale oranges, peach, mauve, and burgundy,” says Amber Marvin, owner of Island Flower & Garden. Brooke adds mint green, aqua, and apricot to the list as well. All 38 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

of these are subtle and romantic in presentation. As romantic as it gets, using your new, married monogram in wedding décor is taking over the wedding scene. From monogrammed ribbons on your bouquet to monogrammed veils, bridesmaid gifts, mimosa and high ball glasses, wedding favors, and even wedding food—it adds a completely personal touch to your day. If white romance isn’t quite your taste, metallic and all the glamour it delivers is also at the top of the list this season. “You would not believe all the glam and metallic we are seeing in vessels, lighting, and gowns,” smiles Brooke. “Metallics are very hot, and gold is coming back stronger in fashion, décor, and accents than ever before.” Brooke loves that while bling is hot, it is being nicely composed with natural countryside details and venues, which are still trending this season. “Rustic glam is what many brides are seeking,” she says. “Chandeliers in barn settings and gold and platinum vases with the same accents in linens, but paired with lotus pods and petite pine cones, are great examples.” For the past few seasons, designers have experimented with creative lighting options, and Amber confirms this trend continues with a greater integration of lighting elements. “We are doing lots of intricately swagged café lights mixed with lanterns, jeweled balls, and other lighting elements to create a magical, glowing atmosphere.” The use of unique design from piece to piece continues this season. “We are seeing brides lean toward three to five different creations to create interest,” offers Amber. “And it’s excellent to combine varied sizes—taller designs mixed with shorter designs, and assortments of vessels that deliver the unique look sought.” Altar creativity continues to emerge as well, with antique pieces taking center stage. In addition to this, designers are encouraging brides to think about how garlands, arches, and trellises can frame any aspect of the nuptials. “For a recent wedding, we designed a 15-foot arch made of manzanita branches and orchids to span across the entrance to the reception site,” explains Brooke. Garland is also a great backpocket tool, as it is easily moved from ceremony altar to reception, used perhaps on the back of the bride’s and groom’s chairs or as a centerpiece. Finally, as design changes, so does floral availability. The latest and greatest news to hit the floral industry is that peonies will not be so seasonal come next year, announces Brooke. “Year-around peonies are in production from Alaska, Chile, and Oregon. Even a new, yellow peony will hit the market soon.” Keep your eyes open, it may be that your favorite bloom is available for your wedding season after all! Brides, be it romance or glam, metallic or rustic, this is your day to shine. “Romance is the glamour which turns the dust of everyday life into a golden haze,” wrote British novelist Elinor Glyn. May it be so for your day.

ON AMELIA ISLAND

By Karen Miller THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE AMELIA ISLAND, THE ULTIMATE in romantic, picturesque, and unique honeymoons. With beautiful serene beaches, soft sea breezes, and breathtaking scenery, every honeymoon offers a magical setting for an intimate celebration of your new life together. Rich in history and pristine natural beauty, Amelia Island’s ocean beaches and quaint appeal beckon couples to reconnect with the things that matter most in life. There’s a lot of work that goes into planning a wedding, and by the time the vows are said, the bridal cake has been cut, and the last guest strolls back to their hotel room, the newlyweds are eager to spend time alone. Amelia Island is abounding in upscale, world-class bed-and-breakfasts, exclusive restaurants, and championship golf courses. If you love the outdoors, Amelia Island has lots to offer, from fishing and kayaking to surfing and biking. If relaxation is your preference, there are numerous places to enjoy spa treatments, yoga, music, art, and even theatre. Many couples who honeymoon on Amelia Island come back year after year, once they realize that their vacation of a lifetime is accessible whenever they need a romantic getaway. 42 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

Many of Amelia Island’s hotels, resorts, and inns have special packages with a variety of romantic activities, such as carriage rides through the historic downtown, horseback rides on the beach, sunset river cruises, and more. If you’re looking to spend your honeymoon in a coastal paradise with authentic natural beauty and numerous recreational activities, Amelia Island welcomes you with open arms. In the center of Fernandina Beach, The Fairbanks House has been recognized as one of the most beautiful bed and breakfast inns in the country. Recently named the number one property in Conde Nast’s 2012 Gold List, the inn boasts striking Italianate architecture, along with rooms that are charming and comfortable, many with Jacuzzis and private porches. Innkeeper and owner Theresa Hamilton provides wine and chocolatecovered strawberries upon your arrival, as well as spa robes, upscale amenities, and free WiFi in the rooms. “We cater to romance,’ says Hamilton. “We are all about quiet, romantic getaways, and we can accommodate every need.” Several of the oversized rooms even have small kitchens and all rooms have coffeemakers. A two-course breakfast, complimentary use of bikes, a pool and beach equipment, along with evening beverages and hors d’oeuvres, round out the carefree pampering that couples will remember for a lifetime. Equally charming is The Amelia Island Williams House, a beautifully restored Victorian mansion on a quiet street close to the town center. This award-winning inn features charming spacious guest rooms with working fireplaces, baths with whirlpool tubs for two, elegant bedding, and all of the amenities you need for an atmosphere for romance and relaxation. Innkeepers Byron and Deborah McCutchen invite you to sit on their wide verandahs underneath live oak trees dripping with Spanish moss while you “wine” down the day, and enjoy views of their serene gardens, fountains, and koi pond. The Hoyt House Bed & Breakfast, located in downtown Fernandina Beach, is an elegant 1905 Queen Anne-style mansion of gracious living of yesteryear. Known for its inviting guest and sitting rooms, three-course gourmet breakfast, and luxurious amenities, this inn speaks of romantic elegance. Honeymoon packages include chilled
