HOLLY ALLAIN PHOTOGRAPHY

LETTER FROM THE

As I sit down to pen this letter, I have invitations to two fall weddings in hand: one a big destination wedding, the other a more intimate, hometown affair. It’s an interesting coincidence, because those are exactly the types of weddings that we regularly feature in each issue of Amelia Island Weddings Magazine. As we have noted previously, Amelia Island has become a premier spot for spectacular destination weddings, perhaps the leading location in the Southeast and one of the top spots in the entire county. At the same time, we at Amelia Island Weddings have the pleasure of featuring a number of beautiful local weddings, the sometimes more intimate but no less joyful unions of couples that are celebrated in Amelia Island’s churches, at our beautiful venues, or on our unspoiled beaches. As we have learned, weddings can come in every shape and size, and they are all profound testaments to that same joy which each couple experiences. In addition, over the years we have developed a profound appreciation for the grace and beauty of the many weddings here on Amelia Island that remain hidden from view. They are private affairs, gracious celebrations that bless the unions of couples who have grown up here, and who have decided to join their lives together in

marriage. A strong community fosters strong marriages, and Amelia Island is no exception. Like the couples that we are able to feature, each bride and groom will leave behind their old lives and embark on an exciting new life together, a great adventure that will bring untold joys and challenges. It is a moment full of hope and optimism, and the joy of sharing that moment with family and friends. As we unfailingly see in each issue, the beauty of the occasion always shines through in each wedding, whatever the style. And on Amelia Island, couples can plan a wedding celebration in almost any style they can imagine! Here we are particularly blessed with beautiful, vibrant churches and stunning natural beauty, so couples can enjoy an oceanfront ceremony or reception, panoramic marsh vistas that run out to the Intracoastal Waterway, or beautifully manicured golf course greenery with a backdrop of elegant oaks. All of these romantic settings can be enjoyed at a wide variety of wonderful venues available on the island. On Amelia Island, couples can have the wedding of their dreams, whatever their dream may be. We hope you will enjoy reading this issue of Amelia Island Weddings as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Whether you’re a resident, a frequent visitor, or a newcomer to Amelia, we know you will see the extraordinary wedding possibilities available to you on this lovely 13-mile-long barrier island.

AND THAT’S NOT ALL Of course, there are lots of options to choose from when you’re considering an island wedding. On Amelia, there are many lovely bed & breakfast inns that can provide an elegant and intimate setting for your special day. The circa 1856 Amelia Island Williams House on South Ninth Street in downtown Fernandina Beach is owned and operated by Byron and Deborah McCutchen. Beautifully landscaped gardens and a spacious courtyard are the perfect venue for a wedding celebration whether intimate or grand. Smaller weddings and receptions can also be held in the elegant dining room and Victorian parlor. Byron and Deborah’s attention to detail has created a special place for an island wedding and they are ready to help you with all the arrangements. The beautifully restored Victorian is also on a quiet street downtown within easy range of all the restaurants, shops, and sightseeing that the downtown has to offer. Also in the heart of historic downtown Fernandina Beach is The Florida House Inn on South Third Street, the oldest continually operating hotel in Florida. The Florida House Inn has undergone a painstaking historic restoration and features beautiful heart pine floors, a 350-year old live oak tree, an immaculate courtyard and gardens, original fireplaces, string lighting throughout the courtyard, a beautiful mermaid fountain, and 17 luxurious guest rooms. The courtyard can accommodate weddings of up to 200 people, and the inside dining room is perfect for rehearsal dinners and dinner events, all featuring the Inn’s delicious Southern cuisine. The Mermaid Bar offers live entertainment and it is a great spot to enjoy after the ceremony or reception. Emily Saltmarsh is ready to help you with all of your wedding planning needs. If you want to be in the heart of the Historic District, the Hampton Inn & Suites Historic Harborfront Hotel is your answer. “’Location! Location! Located on the Intracoastal Waterway overlooking the Fernandina Beach Marina, the Hampton Inn & Suites offers spacious and comfortable accommodations. Take advantage of staying in the

heart of the historic district—a short walking distance to many of the island’s renowned restaurants and shops. Room types include traditional rooms, two-room suites, and deluxe whirlpool rooms. For those seeking a truly special place to rest, a stunning bridal suite and a high-class presidential suite are also available. Pennington can provide you with all the information you need and help you with all of your wedding accommodations. For an intimate, romantic gathering in downtown Fernandina Beach, step into the Hoyt House, an elegant 1905 Queen Anne style ten-bedroom en suite mansion. The manicured grounds, softly illuminated by lights hanging from the 500-year-old moss-laden oak tree, create a breathtaking evening ambience. Their grounds, gazebo, and poolside make a wonderful location for a rehearsal dinner, ceremony, or cocktail reception. Walk indoors through 11foot double French doors, where three gracious sitting rooms await, along with a baby grand piano playing your favorite compositions. Weekend guests enjoy luxurious shower gels and soaps, lush robes and wraps, a three-course gourmet breakfast, and lounging in the terry-covered chaise lounge chairs by the pool and spa. Innkeeper Deborah Gold says: “Come home to The Hoyt House. We will exceed your expectations!” Joe’s 2nd Street Bistro, located in the heart of the historic downtown, can also graciously accommodate wedding receptions, rehearsal dinners, and private parties. Joe’s has ample seating room upstairs and down, with a second-story porch that overlooks the Fernandina Beach harbor, as well as a lush, New Orleans-style courtyard. Their helpful staff will help you design the perfect menu of carefully prepared and delicious food for your wedding celebration, and Joe’s has an excellent wine cellar to compliment whatever menu you choose. Of course, being by the beach also means enjoying the casual beach atmosphere like at The Crab Trap in historic downtown Fernandina Beach. Located on South 2nd Street, this restaurant is a great place for a rehearsal dinner or small reception. The Crab Trap has been a local favorite for 26 years. Owned and operated by the Germano family, The Crab Trap’s nautical décor, friendly service, and great food make it the perfect place for a special Fernandina Beach celebration. The Crab Trap serves fresh local seafood, as well as steaks, lobster, chicken, and oysters. With banquet facilities, a 12 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

private dining room overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway, two full bars, and two fireplaces, The Crab Trap can accommodate your every need. Nestled under the live oaks in Palmetto Walk, Bar Zin is a chic neighborhood bistro that’s all about having fun with family and friends, while enjoying great American bistro food and wine. What better place for a very special gathering of friends and family? With an outdoor brick-paved courtyard under the canopy cover of the live oaks, as well as a wraparound porch and elegant dining room and bar, the indoor and outdoor spaces are ready to welcome small intimate parties, or larger gatherings of up to 49 people. (The courtyard can hold another 49.) Whether it’s a rehearsal dinner, a bridal luncheon, a small reception, or just a gathering of friends, owner Tim Seyda’s passion for excellent wine and food and his attention to detail promise to make every event one to remember. Located in downtown Fernandina Beach, David’s Restaurant is an upscale steakhouse and seafood restaurant with a sophisticated atmosphere and professional service, which makes it the perfect place for your special wedding event. David’s has two event areas available for your gathering. A private wine room is perfect for intimate gatherings and will accommodate up to twelve guests. For a larger gathering such as a bridal shower, rehearsal dinner, or wedding reception, the private dining room accommodates up to 50 guests. The entire restaurant can comfortably accommodate up to 200 guests. David’s offers several special menus to choose from, or they can create a custom menu, and they are ready to help you plan every detail of your event. With fine cuisine and a luxurious setting, it’s sure to be an extraordinary event at David’s. when he proposed,” shares Nicole. “He even hired a photographer to capture the moment! I was very surprised.” Nicole began looking for places to have their wedding, and Oyster Bay Yacht Club is the venue that spoke to her. The live oak trees, Spanish moss, and spectacular water views were exactly what she was looking for, but it was event planner Terrie Sanders who sealed the deal. “I felt so comfortable with Terrie,” says Nicole. “I trusted her from the start. She was warm and welcoming.” Terrie Sanders is as enamored with Oyster Bay as all of her clients are. “Oyster Bay Yacht Club has a very warm, Southern, coastal ambiance, and I always recommend to every couple that they personalize the space and make it their own,” says Terrie. “What I was most impressed with on Nicole and Jeff’s big day was the genuine love and support of all the friends and family that surrounded them. It was truly a celebration of not only two people becoming one, but two families becoming one.” AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 15

Nicole and Jeff’s ninety guests all stayed at the Hampton Inn & Suites in downtown Fernandina Beach. Their rehearsal dinner was held at Café Karibo on Friday night. “It was great having everyone staying downtown,” remembers Nicole. “Our guests could walk to restaurants and shops throughout the weekend. For the wedding on Saturday, Amelia Island Trolleys transported all the guests safely to and from the reception at Oyster Bay.” “One of my favorite moments is escorting the bride and bridesmaids to take a quick look at the venue prior to the ceremony to make sure that everything is absolutely perfect and as she envisioned it to be,” says Terrie. “Nicole was absolutely stunning, and the look on her face when she saw everything in place was priceless. It was then time to meet her groom and exchange their vows of love for each other. It was quite a celebration, and so rewarding to see the newlyweds live their dream and dance the night away with their friends and family!” The wedding ceremony was held under the live oak trees, officiated by Ann Eastwick. Their ceremony consisted of a special “wine box time capsule,” where a bottle of wine was placed in the box, along with love letters that Jeff and Nicole wrote. They both 16 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

pounded a nail into the box, which will then be opened on their fifth wedding anniversary. Their reception was held indoors, with a gourmet buffet dinner, and music was provided by DJ Jason Garcia from Jacksonville. Flower arrangements were created by Emily Burton, a Georgia floral designer, and Nicole’s grandfather made wooden boxes to hold the arrangements. Sweets by Holly provided a charming cupcake display. “I wanted the ambience to be rustic, but romantic, and soft, and that’s just how it turned out,” says Nicole. “Oyster Bay is the perfect place to hold a wedding like this. It’s full of Southern charm. There were balls of baby’s breath hanging from the trees, along with gold votives. Blush gold, and greenery all added to the effect.” After the wedding, the Nicole and Jeff headed to St. Lucia for their honeymoon. The couple currently lives in Jacksonville, where Nicole works as a third grade teacher, and Jeff is an electronics technician for an oil company. Their wine box time capsule now sits in a special place in their hallway, in anticipation for their fifth wedding anniversary in 2020. AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 17

Katherine & John OCEAN CLUB OF AMELIA By Karen Miller

Photography by Annabelle Manning Photography

Katherine Zander met John Hamilton at Eastside Community Church in Jacksonville. They were eager to strike up a conversation, but they kept getting interrupted. “It was so funny!” says Katherine. “Every time we tried to talk to each other, someone would come up and cut our conversation short.” But eventually, Katherine and John got to know each other better. “John is so much like my dad,” says Katherine. “He’s a strong, Christian guy, and I admire that about him.” Katherine was attending school in Nashville, Tennessee at the time, so the couple dated long distance, spending as much time together as they could. “Our first date was at a gun range,” says Katherine. “We both love the outdoors. Many of our dates included playing beach volleyball and other sports.” Katherine and John dated for a year, then they knew they 18 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

wanted to tie the knot. John proposed during spring break at the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens in Jacksonville, and they began planning their wedding for June. The couple wanted a Christian wedding, but preferred to get married on the beach. They didn’t want a big reception, but the guest list grew to ninety. “My mom did all the research and discovered that Sliders’ Ocean Club venue was the perfect size. It was so beautiful!” exclaims Katherine. “We had our ceremony on the beach at 10 a.m., and then we enjoyed a luncheon upstairs at the Ocean Club. The venue was ideal. There was a nice area where the children could play, and a lovely breeze coming off the ocean.” Pastor Dan Werthman performed the ceremony. John’s best man was his father, Don, and Katherine’s maid of honor was her sister, Jenna. “We had a lot of help from my mother and father,

Julie and Doug Zander, along with John’s sister, and friends from church. They did all the decorations and my friend Pam Hinson made our amazing wedding cake and cupcakes!” Katherine admits that she owes much of the credit to her parents for their hard work on the wedding. “My mom was really the mastermind behind the whole thing, but my dad did a lot of the manual work and helped her put the craft decorations together,” says Katherine. “He also made the chuppah-like bamboo tent that we stood under for the ceremony. And my mother made all the flower arrangements!” One of the unique aspects of Katherine and John’s wedding was a coffee bar that was set up before the ceremony. Guests were encouraged to mingle and get to know each other a bit before the wedding. Bill Ricci, acoustic guitarist with 3 Dog Music from Jacksonville, entertained guests during the reception before the wedding. “He also amplified the music and ceremony

through special speakers that filtered beach wind noises and other distractions,” says Katherine. “Richard Stratton of La Dolce Trio played music before and during our ceremony.” After the ceremony, Sliders’ servers offered passed hors d’oeuvres before the luncheon. “The food was wonderful,” says Katherine. “Our menu included specialties like Brie and Raspberry Star Puffs, Watermelon and Feta Cheese Salad, Braised Atlantic Salmon, and Ginger Shitake Chicken. Nigel Teare, Sliders’ event planner, was a pleasure to work with,” says Katherine. “He oversaw the entire event and made sure things went smoothly.” Katherine and John’s elegant barefoot-on-the beach wedding was beautifully captured by photographer Annabelle Manning, who recorded every memorable detail. The couple then enjoyed a week-long honeymoon in the picturesque and historic city of Charleston, South Carolina before beginning their new adventure in life, as husband and wife. Callie & Mat CABIN BLUFF By Julie Simmons

Photography by Kayla Calhoun

Callie Criser and Mat Hugo’s love story was laced with family love from the start. “My grandparents knew Mat before I was even born,” laughs Callie. Callie was attending the University of Florida when she visited Jacksonville with a sorority sister and met Mat. “Soon after, my grandmother had a clue that I was seeing Mat and she called his dad and asked, ‘Is your son courting my granddaughter?’” Four years later, Mat took Callie for a boat ride on the St. Johns River and asked her to spend the rest of their lives together. All smiles, the couple rushed to her parents to share the news and when they arrived, her entire family – including her three sisters from out-of-town – was gathered to congratulate them! The couple began to make wedding plans, but six months into the planning, the festivities were put on hold when Callie received news that the 20 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

organs she was waiting for double-transplant surgery following a serious childhood illness were available. After a successful surgery, the couple was ready to focus on their nuptials. When choosing a venue, the bride didn’t have to look far past her family. “Cabin Bluff has been in my family forever,” the bride says of the beautiful retreat on the Cumberland River, just over the Florida-Georgia line. “My grandfather worked for the company who owned Cabin Bluff and he used to entertain hunting trips on the property. Later, he started inviting us, and it’s a place that just brings us together.” “In the past, weddings were a one-night reception and went by way too fast,” says Andy Ippensen, director of sales & marketing at Cabin Bluff. “Today, couples want to create memorable experiences and spend quality time with their guests

without being pulled in too many directions. Our inclusive and private nature allows them to do this during activities, meals and gatherings throughout the weekend.” That was exactly the case for Callie and Mat and their families and friends during their wedding weekend. Between hunts, clay shooting, bike riding, walks through the live oaks, and yoga on the pool deck, everyone was entertained. The ladies especially adored the bridal luncheon on Cabin Bluff’s pontoon boat, which offered a front-row seat to Cumberland Island’s frolicking wild horses. “Cabin Bluff was a great fit for Mat and Callie’s wedding,” says Andy. “Both are creative individuals, and we acted as a blank canvas for them to create the perfect weekend for their family and guests to celebrate together.” The creativity was never better than when Callie and her monogrammed cowboy boots walked to her groom. “I found 1920’s church pews from a Jacksonville church for sale,” the bride shares. “And my mom found a church kneeler at a church garage sale in North Carolina.” These, along with the arch Mat’s family constructed, were gorgeous under the Spanish moss and on the coastline as a backdrop for the couple’s wedding vows. Following the ceremony and cocktail hour on the pool deck, Tasteful Temptations of Brunswick, Georgia catered an amazing feast and provided the monogrammed cake. Guests danced all night to The Dickens Band from North Carolina. A favorite memory is the family dancing around the bride’s grandmother, Sally, who was terminally ill with cancer, as the band played, “Ride, Sally Ride.” Callie and her dad surprised everyone with camouflage baseball caps with the couple’s custom monogram. As a grand finale, the couple departed under a shower of yellow and white rose petals before the guests left the reception with camo flashlights to make their way back to their suites. “We were surrounded by people who supported and loved us through the thick and thin,” Callie and Mat smile. This was exactly the crowd with which the couple wished to experience the beauty, peace, and rustic luxury of Cabin Bluff as they tied the knot of their love. AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 21

Natalie & Jeremiah FLORIDA HOUSE INN By Karen Miller Photography by Jay Grubb Photography

Rain on your wedding day is said to bring good luck to your marriage. According to an old wives’ tale, the knot in “tying the knot” becomes wet and is harder to break, thus making the marriage stronger. For newlyweds Natalie and Jeremiah Ring, their rainy day wedding was certain to bring the best of luck for their future. “We kept waiting and waiting for the rain to stop for a few minutes so we could get married outside,” laughs Natalie. “The weather didn’t matter in the long run—it was a beautiful wedding, so memorable.” Natalie and Jeremiah were recently married at the Florida House Inn, a vintage 1857 hotel located in the heart of the Historic District of Fernandina Beach. They were very familiar with the Florida House, having celebrated two anniversaries of their very first date there. They knew the Inn could easily accommodate most of their 67 guests, and the downtown location meant that their friends and family members could comfortably walk to local shops and restaurants. Natalie and Jeremiah met in Jacksonville at Merrill Lynch, where they were co-workers, and they discovered they had many things in common. “We both love the outdoors,” says Natalie. “We do everything together—camping, boating, and going to garage sales.” They dated for three-and-a-half years, when Jeremiah popped the question. “Our engagement was very sweet,” remembers Natalie. “Jeremiah was going to propose to me in Fernandina Beach. While we were still at home that day with our friends, he got so excited that he jumped the gun and proposed right then and there!” The wedding party consisted of five bridesmaids and four groomsmen. Lisa Presnell officiated the ceremony, after which guests enjoyed passed hors d’oeuvres and a choice of three Southern-style entrees, including the Florida House’s famous fried chicken. “We wanted all of our guests to dance, so when we sent out the invitations we requested that they tell us their favorite 22 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

dance music,” said Natalie. “Then our DJ played those songs, and before you knew it, everyone was on the dance floor!” The Florida House provided the wedding flowers, designed by innkeeper Emily Saltmarsh. Natalie’s family, including her mom, Patricia Powers, along with family friends Linda Forte and Dana Mims helped with the decorations and gift bags for all the guests, and Jay Grubb provided the photography. “We also had a photo booth with lots of props,” says Natalie. “It was so much fun! In fact, the whole weekend was fun for everyone.” The guys played golf, and the girls enjoyed a brunch provided by Natalie’s aunts, Linda Powers and Lynne DuBerger, before the wedding. Other guests spent their spare time shopping and enjoying the ambience of the Historic District and the waterfront. Natalie and Jeremiah held their rehearsal dinner at Pablo’s Mexican Restaurant the night before the wedding. “Jeremiah’s mom, Alejandra Ring, is from Argentina. We all love margaritas and Mexican food,” says Natalie. “Pablo’s provided an amazing buffet for us, with fajitas, salsa, and all the extras. It was delicious.” Natalie and Jeremiah decided to postpone their honeymoon until 2016, due to their work schedules. They are enjoying planning next year’s trip to Hawaii as part of their one-year anniversary. But as wonderful as a trip to Hawaii will be, the Florida House Inn will always be the couple’s very special place. From their first date to their beautiful wedding, they plan to come back to the Inn again and again. AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 23

Deby & Chris AMELIA ISLAND BEACH WEDDINGS By Julie Simmons

Photography by Todd Smith, Amelia Island Beach Weddings

There’s something about small beach towns that brings families together, like Deby and Chris Upchurch. “Twenty-five years have passed since we were in high school together in Port St. Joe, Florida,” explains the bride. “Chris used to work for my dad, and I used to work for his dad, but we never really knew each other until I saw him in 2013 when I was visiting home. Chris told me he was going to take me out one day, but I had no idea how since I lived near Orlando.” A year later, on June 28, 2014, Chris kept his promise and the two had their first date, and they haven’t stopped talking or texting since. In December last year, the couple enjoyed a long weekend visiting the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort. “It’s so pretty here, and it would be a great place to be married,” Chris whispered to Deby. Just a few of days later, Deby was wearing 24 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

an apron, baking Christmas cookies for her three children, when Chris wrapped his arms around her and shone a ring in her face. “That is who she is,” Chris explains, “a mom who loves her kids and takes care of them. It seemed like the perfect time to propose.” When it came time for the couple to choose a location, Amelia Island was their only choice. “Ten years ago, my brother was married on Amelia Island,” Deby explains, “and after our own visit to Amelia, we wanted to bring our families back and share the island with them.” Deby reached out to Todd Smith of Amelia Island Beach Weddings to help her plan her day. Amelia Island Beach Weddings offers complete services for every aspect of a wedding ceremony and reception. “Todd was wonderful. He made me feel so special, and he did much more than we even requested,” Deby remembers.

“Our company is based on the belief that our customers’ needs are of the utmost importance. Our team is committed to meeting those needs with services covering everything a couple will need for the ceremony on the beach, including arbor and chair rental, set-up, music, rose petals, officiant, and more,” explains Todd. The family stayed at Amelia Hotel at the Beach. “This hotel was ideal for us, and the staff was very hospitable. They surprised us with rose petals and champagne in our room!” says Deby. The girls had a fun bachelorette dinner on the patio at Pablos Mexican Grill & Cantina. Afterwards, some of the adults enjoyed the band at Sliders Seaside Grill. When the sun rose on the wedding morning, June 13, 2015, the bride was overwhelmed with joy. “My daughter helped me with my makeup,” she shares. “I wanted the day to be about the kids as much as me. Chris was marrying all of us.”

“After meeting Deby for the first time, it was hard not to fall in love with her spirit,” Todd says. “She was excited about getting married on the beach because of the amazing views and relaxed atmosphere, which turned out to be truly magical.” At 5 p.m., Deby walked through the sand and said “I do” surrounded by her children. “The kids participated in the unity sand ceremony with us,” she smiles. After the ceremony, Todd provided a fabulous dinner for the family, where they laughed and made memories together. “I call the beach ‘my happy place,’” says the bride. “Chris and I are from a beach town, and it seemed right to bring our new families together on the beach.” A month later, the couple took an Alaskan Cruise to celebrate their nuptials. Today, they enjoy being a family, and remembering fondly their Amelia Island wedding. AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 25

Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort By Karen Miller

With 289 weddings under her belt, Mary O’Donnell, general manager of the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort, is no rookie when it comes to wedding planning. With limitless resources at her hands and the resort’s spectacular beauty, a wedding at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort is one that will provide memories to last a lifetime. “There are various locations to choose from for any type of wedding,” says O’Donnell. “Each one is so different, and depending on the taste of each individual couple, we can offer many choices.” From a beach ceremony to a traditional chapel wedding, the Omni Resort offers a number of picturesque locations where couples can tie the knot. O’Donnell and her staff will also suggest fun activities for the couple’s guests, like a bridal spa party, a 28 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

groom’s golf outing, a beach fire, or a rehearsal dinner. The Omni allows brides and grooms to host their guests in luxury and comfort in well-adorned, oceanfront suites, and many families use the opportunity to make their destination wedding a true, one-ofa-kind vacation. “We provide activities and pastimes that help couples bond with their guests, and we offer lots of choices, like kayak trips, Segway tours, and golf outings,” says O’Donnell. “The list of enhancements for your big day is virtually endless, and Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort’s wedding and event staff promises to be there every step of the way.” One of the Omni’s favorite wedding venues is Walker’s Landing. Located on the marsh side of Amelia Island Plantation,

PAM BELL PHOTOGRAPHY

Walker’s Landing offers natural, splendid marsh views. Guests can enjoy a sunset from the deck surrounding this octagonal-shaped facility. The interior boasts hardwood floors, a fieldstone fireplace, and windows surrounding the perimeter. It can accommodate up to 160 guests for a buffet dinner, or 75 for a sit-down affair. Oak Point Lawn, strategically placed between Spanish mosscovered oaks and the lush greens and fairways of the Oak Marsh Golf Course, offers dazzling views of the beautiful marsh. Ocean Terrace overlooks the beach, offering spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean. Booked in conjunction with the Oceanview Room, this seaside setting offers an exceptional space for ceremonies. A naturally inviting gathering place, Marsh View is a venue overlooking vistas of the ever-changing marsh, Intracoastal Waterway, and the ninth hole of Oak Marsh, with a private deck, dinner space, and plenty of room for dancing. The Omni’s banquet rooms are modern and top-notch, with unique décor and stunning chandeliers. And if a beachside wedding is your cup of tea, you can say “I do” with sand between your toes, the sound of soothing waves in the background, and a breathtaking view of the sparkling waves of the Atlantic Ocean. But, with all that Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort has to offer, their culinary team is what takes a destination wedding to the top. “Our chefs make a real connection with our couples,” says O’Donnell. “We have lots of flexibility with menus, from sitdown dining to food stations paired with wine. They also create visually stunning wedding and groom’s cakes, and design a menu that is suited to a couple’s level of elegance, taste, and budget.” “Our team would love the opportunity to showcase Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort as a destination location for your special day!” says O’Donnell. W H AT ’ S H O T I N

wedding jewelry By Karen Miller with Drew Scott Gone are the days when a suitor surprises his beloved with an engagement ring of his choice. Today’s women want to choose their own engagement rings, and often it begins with a trip to the jewelry store with their mothers. “Brides shop around, they educate themselves, and they make very fashion-forward decisions about their rings,” says Drew Scott of Scott & Sons Fine Jewelry, which has one of the largest bridal selections of in-stock merchandise in Northeast Florida. Sometimes a family diamond will be provided to the bride, usually from the potential groom’s family, and the couple will choose a design to work the heirloom stone into a modern setting. “This is a way that couples can pay homage to their family, and save a little money at the same time.” “The halo diamond, above all, is the most popular engagement ring right now,” says Drew, who has years of experience assisting brides and grooms with their jewelry. “A halo ring is a ring with smaller diamonds encircling the center stone. 30 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

The center stone could be a diamond, or it could be another stone, like morganite, which is a hot trend in engagement rings.” Alongside emerald and aquamarine, morganite is a pink semi-precious gemstone of the beryl family of minerals, and pairs well with a rose, white, or yellow gold setting. For wedding bands, couples want their own ring styles, and rarely do brides and grooms choose matching rings. “There’s a company we do business with called Lashbrook Designs that produces men’s wedding rings from unique metals,” says Drew. “Titanium, cobalt chrome, and meteorite are some of their most popular offerings. Some of their ring designs include camouflage, and even tire tracks!” A few brides like to give their bridesmaids jewelry gifts that they can wear for the wedding, but Drew is seeing less of this. “We find that the younger generation has less desire to go with oldfashioned traditions. They want to make their own decisions, and even the wedding party wants to show off their own individual styles.” But for traditional gifts for bridesmaids and groomsmen, Drew still sells items like knives, men’s jewelry, and pearl sets. And for the mother of the bride who really wants to sparkle, unique pieces of jewelry suitable for her own personal taste can always be found. Alex Henriquez, Scott & Sons’ in-house jeweler, uses his thirty years of experience to design rings and other pieces by hand using the “lost wax method.” “Many couples want a one-of-a-kind design, and Alex can create that for them,” says Drew. “The wax is hand-carved, and Alex can even set a stone into the wax so the bride can try on her ring and get a real idea of what it’s going to look like before the ring is cast.” Another trend in wedding jewelry is “stacking,” which is a grouping of wedding bands that can be added to the original band and engagement ring. A husband might purchase a second band for a wedding anniversary, or any special occasion, and maybe even a third. This trend allows couples to mark milestones in their relationships. Drew Scott is owner of Scott & Sons Fine Jewelry, a family-owned and operated jewelry store located at 9900 Amelia Island Parkway in Fernandina Beach. For more information or to make an appointment with Drew, call (904) 491-1550 or visit them online at www.scottandsons.com.

Ladies, reminisce with me about that moment when you were a little girl, holding a white daisy, plucking a petal each time you whispered the phrase. A little trivia: this tradition, which is meant to determine whether the object of your affection returns the affection, is of French origin and was originally named effeuiller la marguerite, according to Wikipedia. Flowers have long been part of love stories, and this season, designers are leveraging this symbol to take bridal fashion to a place it has never been before—floral! And why not, ladies? You’re wearing high-waisted floral pants and flowing floral blouses already this year, aren’t you? Here’s your chance to keep that trend going right down the aisle. Carolina Herrera is offering some lovely floral options through embroidery, including one gown appropriately named “Daisy Gown.â€? 32 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

In addition to printed fabrics, colored gowns back again this season, with some of the same blues we saw last season, as well as blushes, stone-washed shades of taupe, nudes, and even ombres. The stone-washed look is stunning. A favorite is Jenny Packham’s Cressida gown, which she finishes with a double-ribbon belt. This gown also features the very sensual dipped V-neckline, which is trending again this season. In addition to the V, designers are getting creative with neckline options, introducing the beauteau. Oscar de la Renta and Lela Rose offer perfect versions of this silhouette, which for me has a very coastal feel – perfect for an Amelia Island wedding!

Last season, cascading tiers were introduced, and they’re back and even better this year! Tiers are being used in many different gown shapes, adding volume in an interesting way. The tiers are presented in layers of tulle, silk, and organza. If one layer of lace is beautiful, the only thing prettier is layers of lace, which many designers, including Angel Sanchez, employed. Partial overlay skirts also resurfaced on the runways, enhancing the beauty of many gowns. Feathers flew into bridal fashion last year, and they’re here in flocks for the fall and spring. Vera Wang used big, black feathers to dramatic effect, while Amsale created a soft and delicate with feather details at Bridal Fashion Week. Lela Rose and Kelly Faetanini presented ostrich feather skirts, while Jenny Packham blended cascading tiers with feathers for a spectacular result! New this season and expected to grow in popularity are Victorian touches. Think of high necklines, pearled sleeves, and head pieces. Sleeved gowns are still very popular, but this season in short, above-theknee skirts. And mixing very formal with very casual is still prevalent in all parts of your special day! I adored Claire Pettibone’s exhibition of a formal gown paired with a black cowboy hat and boots. Arguably, the most unique gown this season is not a gown at all, but a powerful, white, and sharp bridal suit! Gowns are not for everyone, and the classic, tailored white suit was found in Naeem Khan, Carolina Herrera, Theia, and Houghton’s lines. Designers frequently paired the suit with a captivating, very formal, layered veil. Brides, the last petal on your daisy is plucked, and, “HE LOVES YOU!” Whether you go floral, feathers, Victorian, pink, short, or cowgirl, he still loves you! Congratulations, and may you enjoy each moment of planning your day!

notch entertainers, such as DJ’s that mix beats and keep the dance floor packed. Club DJ’s can incorporate scratching and mixing, offering guests an unforgettable music experience. When considering a Club DJ, you want to ensure that they are comfortable being the MC as well. They are responsible for all of your announcements throughout the evening and that is something that Club DJ’s don’t do on a regular basis. It’s important that you be on the same page with your expectations.

*a 4Q[I 8ZM[VMTT 8?+ A number of new trends have been appearing in wedding celebrations this year, and they are sure to continue into the fall and winter. Here are a few that have been hard to miss. CRAFT COCKTAILS Reflect your “spirit” and serve a craft cocktail at your reception. Personalizing a signature drink that is unique to you can really add to your celebration. It can be cost effective too. Add a super cute sign at the bar indicating the ingredients and give your concoction a fun names that reflects your personalities. Stick with a crowd pleasing spirit like vodka as your main ingredient. Make it seasonal or match it to your color scheme. Add custom cocktail napkins, paper straws, or monogrammed koozies for an added flair. EXCEPTIONAL ENTERTAINMENT The traditional run-of-the-mill DJ is a thing of the past. Couples are opting for top 36 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

COCKTAIL PARTIES Instead of seated dinners and buffets, many couples prefer cocktail-style parties with food stations, small plates, passed hors d’oeuvres, and mini versions of classic menu items. Imagine a menu filled with bite-sized tacos, mini crab cakes, pulled pork sliders, tomato soup shots with mini grilled cheese. Think big flavor in small bites! And make sure your ambience matches the food you serve. Don’t forget to include “Cocktail Reception” or “Heavy Hors d’Oeuvres” on the invitations. You don’t want your guests to expect a sit down meal. DESSERT Some couples are ditching the traditional wedding cake and going for dessert displays with a wide variety of delicious treats, not just cake pops and cupcakes. How about dessert shooters, cookies and milk, or mini pies and tarts? Add cordials or an espresso bar for complete indulgence! MISMATCHED BRIDESMAIDS’ DRESSES If you have ever been a bridesmaid, you know how much you can dread seeing what the bride has chosen for you to wear for fear that it might not look good on your body type. After all, we come in a variety of shapes and sizes. What looks good on one bridesmaid might not look good on another. Many brides are giving their bridesmaids the opportunity to choose their dress style, or giving them a color range to stay within. Bridesmaids can find the dress that best suits their body type, and the bridal party will have dresses that could range from light to dark all in the same hue. Very chic! Æ W_MZ[ LuKWZ The natural beauty of a floral crown is getting attention this season, as is the European cascade-style bouquet. *a 2]TQM ;QUUWV[ “Love is the only flower that grows without the aid of seasons,â€? wrote Kahlil Gibran. And this season, flowers are definitely in bloom! Whether it’s your gown, your veil, or your bouquet, the name of the game is floral. In bridal fashion, gowns in floral fabric and embroidery are dominating runways. Meanwhile, local florists reiterated the same thing when it comes to bridal headpieces. “I am seeing more use of floral crowns instead of veils,â€? says Amber Marvin of Island Flower & Garden. “We designed many floral crowns utilizing large blossoms like peonies and garden roses, as well as small crowns using twine and braided hemp as a base with a small clustering of blossoms at the back.â€? In addition to flowers, alternative fabrics are being included in headpieces and bouquets, 38 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

especially ribbons. “Long ribbons and fabrics are being used at the back of crowns to create a veil feeling while being more whimsical in design.â€? Meanwhile, Brooke Raulerson, AIFD, CFD, FSMD, owner of Artistic Florist, is seeing a huge shift in the shape of bridal bouquets. “The most exciting trend that has become even more dominant in planning this year and next year’s wedding is the loose-style cascade incorporating japonicas of all varieties, such as jasmine, spire, camellia, and pieris. This trend is allowing the wild vine and foliage new purpose in the old-fashioned style bouquets. Although cascades are labor intensive, skilled florists are producing them with bold highlights of lush blooms.â€? In bridal fashion, hints of Victorian style are emerging, and the same thing is true in floral. “The cascade style of bouquets has always been a true European style. Our traditional hand-style round bouquets are a standard for Europeans to give as gifts, but they would not be a bridal bouquet,â€? says Brooke. “Cascade-style bouquets are also a beautiful compliment to the bride, since they elongate the figure and enhance the slim line of the waist.â€? When it comes to color this season, Amber is seeing lots of gold. “A lovely trend right now is the use of gold mercury glass-and-metal containers mixed with champagne and blush-colored blossoms.â€? Brooke notes that the use of rustic Mason jars is making way for gold and copper. Brides are also experimenting with fun lighting, transitioning to a more contemporary look. “The shift we are seeing is from grapevine balls to cafĂŠ lighting swagging with other alternatives, like hanging votives across the ceiling,â€? notes Amber. “Some brides have even experimented with votives or coordinating blossoms dangling with the cafĂŠ lighting.â€? As more weddings are held in non-traditional places, couples are incorporating traditional elements into their venues. “Custom archways create unique ceremony spaces. From solid bloomto-bloom floral structures creating unique shapes, walls, and columns to natural branch dĂŠcor, we are getting custom requests to produce very unique ceremony spaces,â€? Brooke shares. One recent Amelia Island bride went antiquing with her mom for church pews and a kneeler, pairing these with an archway the groom’s family constructed. The result was a stunning combination of nature with tradition as the setting for their vows. This season, brides and grooms, may your love grow like wildflowers and blossom into the perfect wedding day for you!

*a 3IZMV 5QTTMZ Are you looking for a romantic, luxurious, and relaxing honeymoon getaway? Look no further than Amelia Island, one of Florida’s finest resort communities. Amelia Island is a barrier island rich in colorful history and breath-taking natural beauty. Upscale resorts with world-class spas, championship golf, and exclusive dining blend effortlessly with a captivating collection of bed-and-breakfast inns and historic sites. Amelia Island offers the perfect mix of quiet intimacy for a newly married couple and a vast variety of activities and adventure. Many of Amelia Island’s fine hotels and inns offer special packages for honeymooning couples or anyone looking for a romantic and special vacation. There is much to do and see around the island, and plenty of places to relax peacefully with your new spouse as you begin your life together. For couples who love the outdoors, Amelia Island is a great place for golfing, surfing, kayaking, and biking. For a more laid-back and nurturing experience, enjoy a spa treatment, a dreamy dinner for two, local music and concerts, dancing, art galleries, or even a theater performance. The community of Fernandina Beach is warm and welcoming; in fact, its charm has redefined 42 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

romantic elegance! Imagine beginning your life together in an enchanting and historic seaside town that has been home to sea captains, fabled pirates, and Gilded Age millionaires. There are so many things a couple can do on Amelia Island to make their honeymoon and memorable one. Don’t you wish you were here right now? In the center of Fernandina Beach, The Fairbanks House has been recognized as one of the most beautiful bed and breakfast inns in the country. Recently named the number one property in Conde Nast’s 2012 Gold List, the inn boasts striking Italianate architecture, along with rooms that are charming and comfortable, many with Jacuzzis and private porches. Innkeeper and owner Theresa Hamilton provides wine and chocolatecovered strawberries upon your arrival, as well as spa robes, upscale amenities, and free WiFi in the rooms. “We cater to romance,’ says Hamilton. “We are all about quiet, romantic getaways, and we can accommodate every need.” Several of the oversized rooms even have small kitchens and all rooms have coffeemakers. A two-course breakfast, complimentary use of bikes, a pool and beach equipment, along with evening beverages and hors d’oeuvres, round out the carefree pampering that couples will remember for a lifetime. Equally charming is The Amelia Island Williams House, a beautifully restored Victorian mansion on a quiet street close to the town center. This award-winning inn features charming spacious guest rooms with working fireplaces, baths with whirlpool tubs for two, elegant bedding, and all of the amenities you need for an atmosphere for romance and relaxation. Their honeymoon packages feature chocolate-dipped strawberries, dinners for two, and romantic horse-drawn carriage rides through the quaint seaside town. A threecourse gourmet breakfast is served each morning in the dining room, plus complimentary beverages and snacks are available all day, as well as bikes, beach towels, and guest chairs for relaxing on the beach. Innkeepers Byron and Deborah McCutchen invite you to sit on their wide verandahs underneath live oak trees dripping with Spanish moss while you “wine” down the day, and enjoy views of their serene gardens, fountains, and koi pond.

The Hoyt House Bed & Breakfast, located in downtown Fernandina Beach, is an elegant 1905 Queen Anne-style mansion of gracious living of yesteryear. Known for its inviting guest and sitting rooms, three-course gourmet breakfast, and luxurious amenities, this inn speaks of romantic elegance. Honeymoon packages include chilled champagne and fresh roses in the room, the use of the inn’s bicycles, and a large heated pool and spa. In addition, the Hoyt House has a private two-bedroom, two-bathroom motor yacht available for full-day, overnight, or sunset cruises. Located just steps from the Atlantic Ocean is the Amelia Hotel at the Beach. This locally owned and operated hotel is convenient to area attractions, dining and shopping. “Our hotel offers spacious guest rooms with a location designed to leave guests with great memories at affordable prices,” says Holly Germano, General Manager. “Guests love the comfortable rooms with abundant amenities, Hot & Healthy Breakfast, as well as our evening refreshments—and our Lobby Lounge is the perfect place to enjoy a night cap.” Amelia Island is also a great jumping off place for other destinations. The Travel Agency, a local, full-service travel source, offers a network of contacts and experienced and well-traveled agents who can provide honeymoon packages with VIP status worldwide. Honeymooning couples are known return again and again to Amelia Island, to recreate their special day. It’s an extraordinary place where new lives begin, and memories are made to last a lifetime.
