LETTER FROM THE
Amelia Island is many things to many people, from a sun-drenched vacation paradise to a premier retirement community with all the amenities anyone could want. If you are raising a family, Amelia Island is a community with a welcoming, small-town feel, a great place for children of any age. That’s not a claim many resort destination areas can make. Some places might have the sun and surf, but they aren’t necessarily places where you would want to settle down. Amelia Island is a place of great natural beauty, with unspoiled beaches, tranquil marshes, and a charming downtown, but it is also so much more than that. Amelia Island is a place with a history, a place whose allure is not just skin-deep. It is a place with roots, which is no small thing. For me, I love Amelia Island’s churches. For an island of our size, we are blessed with a great many beautiful churches, all with rich histories. Perhaps the grandest is St. Peter Episcopal Church, a beautiful, Neo-Gothic church built in 1881 by renowned architect Robert Sands Schuyler. Recently expanded, St. Michael Catholic Church was built at its current location in 1859, and the Sisters of St. Joseph who served there helped nurse Fernandina Beach through the yellow fever epidemic of 1877. Baptist Church recently built a large and beautiful church on South 8th Street, and historic First Presbyterian Church, organized in 1858 at its current location, counted Florida’s first Senator David Yulee as a member. And then there’s Memorial United Methodist Church, Amelia Baptist Church, Amelia Plantation Chapel, and many others, all with vibrant faith communities that serve Amelia Island. These strong faith communities contribute to a particular culture on Amelia Island, giving the island an unmistakable spirit of generosity and hospitality, which also makes it a wonderful place to celebrate one’s wedding. Amelia is tried and true, having entertained guests since the Victorian era, and it has never forgotten how to make someone feel at home. Maybe that’s why it is so good at hosting weddings. If you’re thinking about celebrating a wedding on Amelia Island, after you’ve discovered the island’s great natural beauty, dig a little deeper and discover what makes this a truly special place: the people. In this issue, we are happy to present another group of terrific wedding couples, some with local roots. The wedding stories we are privileged to share here document the most important rite of passage in these couple’s lives. As they stand at the threshold of this new life—a life lived together, with all its joys and challenges —we offer them our best wishes. We hope you will enjoy reading this issue of Amelia Island Weddings as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Whether you’re a resident, a frequent visitor, or a newcomer to Amelia, we hope our magazine will inspire you to imagine the extraordinary wedding possibilities available to you on this beautiful 13-mile-long barrier island.

Island Williams House on South Ninth Street in downtown Fernandina Beach is owned and operated by Chris and Maria Page. Beautifully landscaped gardens and a spacious courtyard are the perfect venue for a wedding celebration whether intimate or grand. Smaller weddings and receptions can also be held in the elegant dining room and Victorian parlor. Chris and Maria’s attention to detail has created a special place for an island wedding and they are ready to help you with all the arrangements. The beautifully restored Victorian is also on a quiet street downtown within easy range of all the restaurants, shops, and sightseeing that the downtown has to offer. Also in the heart of historic downtown Fernandina Beach is The Florida House Inn on South Third Street, the oldest continually operating hotel in Florida. The Mermaid Bar offers live entertainment and it is a great spot to enjoy after the ceremony or reception. Emily Saltmarsh is ready to help you with all of your wedding planning needs. For an intimate, romantic gathering in downtown Fernandina Beach, step into the Hoyt House, an elegant 1905 Queen Anne style ten-bedroom en suite mansion. Presbyterian Church,” says Ellie. “My church means a great deal to me. I wanted an evening spring wedding, with traditional vows and hymns. We have a long family history here in Fernandina Beach, so much so that Nana Teresa’s Bake Shop, where we purchased our wedding cakes, is located in the house that my paternal grandmother was born in.” On Friday evening, the couple held their rehearsal dinner at the Florida House Inn. On the day of the wedding, the bridesmaids enjoyed a luncheon at the Summer Beach Pool Club, while the groomsmen took part in a skeet-shooting tournament, all with plenty of time to spare before their church wedding at 7 p.m. “The wedding ceremony was so beautiful. It was officiated by Pastor Wain Wesberry, and it couldn’t have been more perfect,” says Ellie. However, there was AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 15
a bittersweet note to the ceremony, too. Ellie’s grandmother Martha had passed away suddenly on the night of Ellie’s and Zach’s engagement, so Ellie dedicated a portion of the service to her grandmother, including the singing of her favorite hymn, “In the Garden.” Since Ellie and Zach invited 150 guests, they decided that the Golf Club of Amelia Island was the perfect size to accommodate their large group, and it offered the amenities the couple was looking for. “It was an amazing reception,” says Ellie. “While Zach and I and our wedding party were having photos taken at the church after the ceremony, our guests came to the Golf Club for cocktail hour.” They met their guests there later, and enjoyed an extravagant meal with various food stations 16 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
located throughout the club. “The food was phenomenal,” says Ellie. “Chef Ed Bennett did a great job!” “Something I really love about the Golf Club is their back patio, the fire pits, and the twinkling lights,” says Ellie. “It was so pretty. Amber Marvin designed the flowers, and the look paired well with our ‘hunter’ theme!” Yes, the outdoorsy couple decided on a hunting theme for their wedding, complete with deer antlers, pinecones, turkey feathers, and even a duck hunter groom’s cake. “The Bay Kings Band provided the music, and we danced way into the night,” remembers Ellie. After the wedding reception, some of the guests went over to The RitzCarlton, Amelia Island, for an after-party, and that’s where Ellie and Zach spent their first night as husband and wife. The young couple knew they would be tired after all the festivities, so they spent Sunday resting at the beach and pool, before heading to their honeymoon in the Dominican Republic the next day. Today, Ellie and Zach live in Columbia, South Carolina, where Ellie is a pharmaceutical chemist and Zach is a field engineer. They love their jobs and their new life together, but their hearts belong to Amelia Island. “No matter what,” says Ellie, “we’ll be moving back to Amelia someday. That’s the place that we call home.” AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 17
Tara & Samuel O Y S T E R B AY YA C H T C L U B By Karen Miller
Photography by Britney Kay Photography
Tara Clements and Samuel Edwards were attending the University of Florida when they met at an evening homecoming event in St. Augustine. Before their bus departed for Gainesville, Tara and Sam decided to make a quick visit to the Castillo de San Marcos, the oldest masonry fort in the United States. Running in the dark, Tara accidently fell into one of its moats, emptying the contents of her purse. Sam quickly came to her aid, declaring, “Everything will be alright. I’ve got your Altoids!” “That’s the moment we fell in love,” laughs Tara. “We were inseparable from then on.” Six years later, the couple went back to the Castillo de San Marcos, and Sam proposed to Tara with an engagement ring inside of an Altoids box. Tara said “yes!” and together they began planning their Amelia Island wedding. Tara and Sam are native Floridians. Sam grew up on Amelia 18 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
Island with his parents, Taylor and Beth Edwards, and Patricia and Craig Hood, and Tara, daughter of Jeff and JoEllen Clements, grew up in Port Orange. Having a wedding that reflected Southern coastal elegance was important to them. They found the perfect venue for their ceremony and reception for 150 guests at the Oyster Bay Yacht Club. “Terrie Sanders and her crew did everything imaginable to help us achieve our wedding vision,” says Tara. Guests began arriving on Thursday, St. Patrick’s Day, at the downtown Hampton Inn & Suites, and then immediately set out to do some celebrating in Fernandina Beach. The next morning, a bridal luncheon was given by Tara’s aunts at Café Karibo, while the groomsmen enjoyed a golf outing at Amelia River Golf Club. That evening, a rehearsal dinner, hosted by the groom’s parents, was held at Walker’s Landing for their out-of-town guests, featuring
shrimp and grits, pulled pork, and fried chicken provided by Chef Brian McCarthy, with dancing and live music. On the day of the wedding, Amelia River Cruises transported guests by water to Oyster Bay. A guitarist and violinist played preceremony and ceremony music under a white tent on the front lawn. At the end of a rose petal aisle sat a handcrafted altar that Amber Marvin from Island Flower and Garden had created from a picture that Tara loved. Some reception tables were decorated with lanterns and others with coral pieces, picked out by Tara and her mother, and combined with eucalyptus, succulents, white flowers, and anemones. Tara created signature place cards—oyster shells with guest names on them for their table seatings—along with ceremony pamphlets, signs, and other handmade pieces. Tara and Sam shared an intimate moment together before their ceremony. Being careful not to see each other before the ceremony, Tara, in her lace Mikaella gown with pearl belt, met Sam with eyes closed at the top of a staircase at Oyster Bay to hold hands and pray together. They were then married by Fr. Michael Bowhay, who had also officiated at the wedding of Sam’s parents, Taylor and Beth. After the ceremony, guests enjoyed a cocktail hour which included a lovely fruit and cheese display, stuffed mushrooms, shrimp, and oysters Rockefeller. A dinner buffet was served which included beef tenderloin, fresh crab-encrusted grouper, and citrus chicken piccata. Guests then danced the night away, under the stars, to the great music selections provided by Justin Henshaw of Island Sound. After a sparkler sendoff, Tara and Sam spent the night at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. The couple spent Sunday morning saying goodbye to family and friends before heading off on their honeymoon to Antigua. The couple lives in Tampa, where Tara is a first grade teacher and Sam works as a structural engineer. AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 19
Jenny & Matt WALKERS LANDING By Julie Simmons Photography by Leah Powell Photography
Amelia Islanders love the rivalry between their Florida home and their Georgia neighbors, and so do Jenny and Matt Mountjoy, who met and married in Florida and now live in Georgia. The couple was introduced at Matt’s University of Florida fraternity event the first week of Jenny Bridwell’s freshman year. Four years later—plus a couple more for graduate study—Jenny had a Master’s degree in graphic and web design and Matt in accounting, and the couple relocated to Atlanta. A short while into their young careers, Matt asked Jenny to help him find a home to purchase for him and some roommates. A few days later, she was shocked when the couple took a scubadiving adventure to a rock quarry in Alabama and she found an engagement ring 30-feet deep, with a waterproof sign asking, “Will you marry me?” The sign had two check boxes: “Yes” and “Yes”! When it came to choosing where to exchange vows, the couple quickly decided on Amelia Island. “Amelia isn’t just my home, it’s also a place that is an amazing destination for my outof-town family, Matt’s entire family and childhood friends, and all of our Greek brothers and sisters,” says Jenny. The couple knew their wedding would have a Florida/ Georgia theme. Jenny designed a wedding logo for the celebration, and the couple showed their gratitude to their guests for all their love and support. Jenny and the girls enjoyed a bridal luncheon at Slider’s Seaside Grill, while the groomsmen dined at Café Karibo. Monogrammed gift bags for the guests included handpicked shark’s teeth (from the bride’s Daddy), White Chocolate Sand Dollars from Fernandina’s Fantastic Fudge, coral-and-white polka-dot pajamas for the girls, and golf balls, Crown Royal, and monogram-engraved pocket knives for the guys. The couple’s rehearsal dinner was celebrated at Florida House Inn and served up plenty of Southern charm. “We wanted to show our family and friends all we love about the south,” smiles the bride. 20 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
And they did exactly that, with personal signage, monogrammed koozies by Jenni, and a Southern menu of chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, biscuits, strawberry shortcake, peach cobbler, and a Florida-Georgia craft beer selection. But the highlight of the evening may have been when Jenny and her dad danced to Amelia’s own Sean McCarthy performing his song, “Said the Father to His Daughter.” On the morning of the wedding, the bride and her ladies awoke at her family’s home—in matching coral-and-white polkadot pajamas—to her mother’s breakfast casserole. The party of 18, mimosas in hand, had their hair and makeup done by CorMier Hair Studio and Andrea Wallace. Meanwhile, the groomsmen spent the morning on the Long Point Golf Course at Amelia Island Plantation.
At four o’clock, Jenny slipped her hand into her father’s and stepped from a 1920 Ford Model-T to walk under a canopy of oaks to her groom, who was waiting in front of the lush marsh backdrop. Following the ceremony, guests celebrated with handpassed champagne, a signature cocktail, and Florida/Georgia favorites like fried gator tail and fried green tomatoes. The crowd enjoyed a sit-down dinner and entertainment by the BRB Band booked through Resort Talent. “Halfway through the party we opened an ice cream bar—my favorite food—to keep people energetic,” Jenny smiles. At 10 p.m., the couple left under a shower of sparklers. Today, Jenny and Matt are remodeling the house they picked out, cheering their Florida Gators, and living the joy they experienced at their Amelia Island wedding. AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 21
Tara & Michael GOLF CLUB OF AMELIA ISLAND By Julie Simmons
Photography by Pam Bell Photography
The past years have been full of surprises for Tara, daughter of Amelia Island residents Paige and Jeff Whitaker. Jeff and his brother, Brett, own and operate Robison Jewelry Company on Centre Street in historic downtown Fernandina Beach. The first surprise was meeting Michael Fortner at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida. “I was playing soccer and attending school when Michael visited his best-friend. We met and discovered we both love soccer, and the rest is history,” smiles Tara. The next surprise came two short years later when she was living in Georgia and the two enjoyed a walk along Lake Lanier to celebrate their anniversary. “I had no idea that he was about to propose,” she laughs. “I noticed he’d fallen a little behind, and when I looked back, he was on one knee.” And so he was, holding 22 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
a Robison Jewelry box with a princess-cut diamond that Tara’s father had helped Michael pick out for his daughter. As it turned out, Tara’s maid-of-honor to-be and best friend also became engaged that same day! “We knew we’d have our wedding on Amelia Island,” Tara confirms. “I like the tradition of the wedding in the girl’s hometown, and Michael loves the island.” Additionally, it was a fun destination for their 16 attendants and guests. As the crowd arrived, they enjoyed staying at the Residence Inn Amelia Island. “We had a great time hanging on the beach with all of our friends,” Tara reminisces. “Our friends were huge fans of Pepper’s Mexican Grill & Cantina, where the rehearsal dinner was held.” The wedding day seemed to arrive so quickly, and Tara is forever grateful for her mother’s assistance. “It was tough living
out-of-town and trying to plan everything,” Tara explains. “Mom made everything perfect for us!” That included the bridal brunch Pam Simmons and several friends from First Baptist Church graciously hosted. “It was very special for me to spend that morning with loved ones and even Sunday School teachers from my childhood.” While the ladies enjoyed their soiree, the groom and his buddies hit the Amelia River Golf Course. By the time Tara met the bridesmaids at the Golf Club of Amelia Island to dress, the countdown had begun. Pam Bell Photography collected the memories in beautiful photos. “The lawn beside the 18th green at the Golf Club of Amelia Island was the perfect backdrop for Tara and Michael’s ceremony,” says Director of Catering Sales Linsey Haas. Tara agreed the setting was perfect, and her nerves were calmed by discussing Florida Gator football with her father as they prepared to walk down the aisle. “The ceremony is a favorite memory because my dad officiated our wedding!” says Tara. An extra special touch for the ceremony was that the music was provided by the bride’s Uncle Brett Whitaker’s six children, who formed a small string ensemble! Following the ceremony, a cocktail hour was enjoyed on the terrace, which is surrounded by giant oaks hung with twinkling lights. Artistic Florist provided the floral designs for the ceremony, the bouquets, and the dinner and dancing held inside the clubhouse. The menu included a pasta bar, and it was finished with cake and cupcakes displayed on a cake stand constructed by the groom’s father. Six months into their marriage, Tara and Michael could not be happier! They recently moved back to the Fernandina Beach area, and they love going to the beach with their German Shepherd, Amelia, and of course, playing soccer! AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 23
Courtney & Eric OCEAN CLUB OF AMELIA By Julie Simmons
Photography by Pam Bell Photography
“I always take the stairs, every single time,” explains Courtney Broadfoot, “but that day I was pushing a cart of groceries and opted for the elevator.” Little did she know that when she squeezed into the elevator with a gentleman named Eric and his cart of groceries, the two would discover that they lived across from each other. Some might call it coincidence, but Courtney and Eric are confident it was meant to be! A year of hallway conversations and dinners together later, Courtney and Eric were planning their wedding. “I am from Wisconsin and Eric is from Alabama, and we knew everyone would have to travel somewhere, so we decided to make it a destination wedding.” Turns out Eric, an avid golfer, had visited Amelia Island as a teen for a golf tournament. “’Amelia Island is beautiful,’ I explained to Courtney, and 24 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
it’s the perfect place for our wedding. The downtown is neat, the golfing unparalleled, and I loved the island,” says Eric. The brideto-be, who prides herself on her Google skills, fell in love with Amelia Island after just a few moments of browsing. Her search led her straight to the Ocean Club of Amelia Island. “We had just 25 family members gathering,” says Courtney, “and the space was a crucial point for me. I imagined something small and intimate, and the Ocean Club was just that, with its hardwood floors, beautiful chandelier, and amazing service.” On Thursday before the big day, Courtney, Eric, and a few family members arrived in town, and they adored their accommodations at Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort. “Our rooms overlooked the ocean, and it was just perfect,” Courtney reminisces.
The rest of the family trickled in the next day, including the bride’s five brothers. The party gathered in downtown Fernandina Beach at Brett’s Waterway Café for cocktails. The afternoon soon made way for the evening rehearsal dinner. “Fernandina Beach is full of amazing restaurants,” the couple confirms. “The upstairs private room at Café Karibo was perfect for our party—and we really loved the sangria!” The party didn’t stop there! “We have a history of family game nights, and we are super competitive.” Courtney says with pride. “We gathered at our villas for a night of laughs!” On the morning of the wedding, the bride awoke to sparkling Amelia Island blue skies and 80-degree weather. The ladies headed out for manicures and pedicures, while the gentlemen golfed at the Omni Resort. Courtney was still looking for the perfect hairpiece, which she found at Twisted Sisters on Centre Street, then she was off to Magna’s A Full Body Salon to prepare for the ceremony.
In the late afternoon, as guests and groom waited on the beach, Courtney walked through the dunes escorted by her dad. “I especially remember in our vows we pledged to ‘always dream with you,’” says the bride about one of her favorite ceremony memories. The family gathered for cocktails while Pam Bell Photography captured the event. Perhaps the couple’s favorite part of the weekend was gathering around the table, family-style, for the wedding seafood dinner, featuring crab cakes and fancy cocktails. “The best thing was when the family shared memories about me and Eric. It was so special.” Today, the couple stays busy with Courtney in a Ph.D. program and Eric sneaking off to play golf when he can. Both see their dreams reflected in the eyes of their one-year-old son, Jack. “He makes all the melted hot pockets and bagel bites in Eric’s shopping cart that first night in the hallway worth it!” AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 25

engagement ring FIND AN
T H AT F I T S Y O U R S T Y L E By Lindy Kavanaugh
The origin of the modern day engagement ring dates back to the year 1477, and although it’s symbolism has never changed, styles of engagement rings certainly have. Although the first engagement rings were simple and sentimental, the tradition of what most of us recognize as a solitaire diamond engagement ring didn’t come along until a lot later. Only after the DeBeers Mining Company was created, which was able to increase production from existing mines and acquire new mining sites, were diamonds made widely available. Tiffany & Company is credited with popularizing the design of the six prong solitaire-style ring, which is probably the most recognizable style of engagement ring of Western civilization. In more recent years, trends include, but are not limited to, ring guards, matching wedding sets, mixed metals, and diamond cluster styles. I am delighted to have made it past so many of those fads, but I won’t name names! 30 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
It is not uncommon for diamond shapes to go in and out of style either. The modern round brilliant cut (also known as an ideal cut) was created as a standard for diamond cutting to maximize the diamond’s fire and brilliance. Through the years, diamond cutters have created a variety of shapes and experimental diamond cuts, but a modern round brilliant is timeless. I know you’ve heard the cliché, ‘What once was old, is new again,’ and in jewelry that can often be the case. Before the modern round brilliant, there were old European cuts, old mine cuts, rose cuts, and many others. Today these cuts are very desirable because of their uniqueness. Vintage designs are an easy way to step out of the box for a traditional bride. It may be a refurbished family heirloom or a brand new ring, but vintageinspired styles are always a classic choice. The halo has been, and continues to be, a very popular engagement ring style, whether it is a halo of diamonds surrounding a round sapphire or a cushion-cut diamond. Lately, we are seeing fun diamond, ruby, sapphire, and emerald slices being used in halo-style settings. Slices, as well as rough and uncut diamonds, create a bigger look for less money. I’m still in love with diamond bands. The right diamond band can enhance the look of a solitaire engagement ring, be worn stacked with even more diamond bands, or jazz up a tired setting. You can easily customize your look and change it up as often as you’d like with bands. Not only are diamond bands useful and functional as a symbol of your never-ending love, but they can also serve as the engagement ring. In fact, I had always admired the classic diamond eternity band, so when my husband proposed, he did so with such a ring. I am a gemologist and a jeweler, and I can’t imagine that he would have had an easy time surprising me with a diamond solitaire. In order to find the ring that’s just right for you, take a look at the current trends, but get to know your own style, too, and find the look that suits your lifestyle and your budget. If all else fails, go back to your roots, and stick with simple and sentimental. put a bow on it As bridal fashion continues to introduce surprises, bows are big this season, whether on the front or the back, as well as V-necks, capes, tulle, and sleeves. By Julie Simmons Put a bow on it and call it a wrap! From bows and streamers to deep-V’s and mandarin collars, bridal fashion is presenting all sorts of surprises this fall. Perhaps this season’s biggest new trend are bows. Whether on sleeves, the back, the front, or on the waist, bows are all over the runways this year. Along with bows, another new trend in bridal fashion is the V-neck, particularly in offerings from Oscar de la Renta, Marchesca, and Lela Rose. According to fashion experts, the V-neck is growing in popularity with some brides because it can be flattering, and it can elongate your frame. Marchesca adds 3-D floral appliques surrounding the dipped neckline that are absolutely gorgeous. On the back of the gown, the open back is still a popular element, with the addition of sheer elements this season. 32 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
Off-the-shoulder gowns remain popular, whether in a minimal or ornate style. The simple off-the-shoulder look is embellished this season with frothy tulle, floral appliqués, and feathers, notes a number of bridal fashion magazines. Often paired with the offthe-shoulder gown is the “topper.” Lately we’ve seen capes, but this season the trend expands to capelets, bomber jackets, boleros, and ponchos. Capes are drawing the most raves because they are both modest and glamorous. Designers are also giving brides multiple options with a single gown by using detachable elements, including detachable skirts, trains, bows, belts, and even dazzling, dramatic trains that convert to veils. If you decide that you don’t want to detach anything, you may just want to be ready to move-it! Keep an eye

The Province, also from Lela Rose, illustrates the diversity in wedding fashion. From the feminine, tailored, gorgeous suit shown here to a ball gown, something is available for every bride’s taste! This strapless, tailored pantsuit is stunning with a bow in the back, one of this season’s favorite accents.
Angel Sanchez makes a statement with an aristocratic ruɊed collar on this beautiful gown. In bridal fashion this season, designers are providing brides with lots of options in the neckline and the traditional characteristics of the gown.

out for tiered-skirts and bell-shaped gowns that perform well on the dance floor. Whether your gown is more provocative or more modest, collars, turtlenecks, and chokers are making bold statements on this season’s dresses, especially in the Vera Wang and Angel Sanchez collections. According to one bridal fashion expert, Vera Wang dedicated an entire collection call “Désir a l’Anglaise” to the “profound restraint of the British monarchy and the grandeur of English aristocracy.” Structured ball gowns, high necklines, ruffled collars, luxurious fabrics, and rich embroideries reign this season, in contrast to the large number of bohemian offerings from seasons past. These new looks feel very fresh in a side-by-side comparison with the traditional gown. If you’re feeling more earthy than royal, an accent to celebrate this season are streamer sleeves. Sheer, long, tulle sleeves that are split into streamers flowed beautifully on the runways this year, adding movement and grace to the gowns. Also on view was the continued use of floral patterns, whispy feathers, soft “something blue” and rose-toned dresses, and organic gowns with empire waists, layers of tulle, pleated tulle and lace, and hand-embroidery. And that’s a wrap, my dear brides! No matter what your taste, there are plenty of options available. Use the latest trends as a guide, but most of all, enjoy your shopping. When you find the gown that’s perfect for you, you’ll know it. Congratulations!

NOW TRENDING IN
food & drink By Julie Simmons Like me, you probably remember wedding invitations overflowing with response cards and envelopes in which guests were invited to select their preference—beef or seafood—for the sit-down dinner. However, for today’s brides, as we see in each issue of Amelia Island Weddings Magazine, the menus at many wedding celebrations often center on the couple. “We recently prepared shrimp and grits for a wedding party,” says Drenda Vijuk, owner of The Picnic Basket. “The bride grew up here and wanted the dish she and her groom associate with the happy memories of growing up in our southern beach town.” Another idea is to think about food from your first date, your engagement, or your family’s heritage and incorporate these characteristics into your menu. Lisa Jones of Jack & Diane’s is seeing a lot of couples excited about “Traveling Comfort Food,” which she describes as marrying their favorite flavors with adventure! “It’s a combination of 36 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
interesting flavors such as Thai salad, Jambalaya, or sauces influenced by exotic spices. Couples want to appeal to family traditions, but they want to put a signature experience with it, so we might prepare Curried Grits and Thai Greens., for example.” The move away from formality in weddings today has cleared the way for more fun! Lots of brides are using signage, personal monograms, and logos all over their weddings, and this hip idea is extending itself to the buffet in the form of fun labels like The Biscuit Bar, The Beer Flight, or Pancake Fix-in’s, for example. Not only are couples presenting their favorite dishes to their guests, but they are offering them in bite-size portions. Think about your favorite food, and then shrink it and pair it with a cocktail! Some miniature pairings we’ve seen include Taco Crostinis with Margaritas in Patron nips, Sliders with Mini Mugs of Craft Beer, Grilled Cheese Finger Sandwiches with Bloody Mary shooters, and Tuna Tartare Cones with Sake cups. And for dessert, maybe grandma’s cookies with a small cup of milk! Farm-to-table remains big on the food scene, and brides are offering organic and vegetarian options for guests. Couples are also smart about using “connections.” Think about what your family can offer. Can your grandfather grow your salad greens in his garden, can your uncle fish for your fresh catch, or maybe can your beekeeper friend can provide a jar of honey for your biscuit bar? Similar to eating organic is “shop local,” which is big on Amelia Island in 2016! Brides, remember that we have a brewery and a distillery in town today, shrimp boats, and spectacular chefs and bakers all over the island. Bring the spirit of Amelia Island into your celebration! Live food preparation and interactive chefs are also a hit on the reception scene, either with a pasta station with a chef sautéing your favorite pasta, or perhaps a sushi bar, an oyster-shucker, or a chef muddling fresh guacamole. Whatever your favorite food might be, include it in your wedding celebration and share a little of yourselves with your guests. And enjoy! After all, it’s your day!

wedding Æowers & décor By Julie Simmons Brides-to-be, do you remember picking wild flowers in your yard as a little girl and smiling with pride as you presented them to your mother? If so, you’re going to adore the fresh-picked trends in wedding floral and décor this season! Fresh-picked is at the top of the trends. These bouquets and centerpieces are unconstructed, loose, and include an eclectic mix of blooms and greens that feel like the bride herself gathered them. “Popular flowers for the coming season include dahlias, garden roses, peonies, and ranunculus,” says Brooke Raulerson, AIFD, CFD, FSMD, owner of Artistic Florist. These beautiful flowers are the perfect fresh ingredients for your wedding celebration. Fresh-picked follows closely behind the other garden themes we’ve seen in bridal floral in the 38 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
past couple of years. As you plan your ceremony, you may want to forget the wedding arbor and consider a vertical garden as your backdrop. As some bridal magazines have noted, a floor-to-ceiling arrangement of greenery and beautifully arranged blooms can create a stunning setting. I also adore the idea of a lattice wall with hanging potted plants, upside down stems hung from chandeliers, or a ceiling-hanging inverted garden with upside down blooms crowning the table. While brides were accenting with mint and chamomile last year, this season they’re picking fruit and vegetables! Think about kale, fruiting vines, or grapes as your accents—they are perfect with their green and plum hues. These accents move the focus from the centerpiece alone to the entire table presentation. “Accents are becoming a huge part of weddings, and almost always included are textured linens and chargers,” explains Brooke. “The collection of accents make a centerpiece become a tablescape, incorporating all elements of the table, and in return, adding to the entire ambiance of the room.” Other accent ideas include Dutch-inspired dark iron vases with blooms and whimsical greens, or perhaps a floral lampshade—a column vase filled with blooms and topped with a moss-covered lampshade, as some bridal magazines suggest. Colors will make bold statements the rest of this year and next. “Colors coming strong for next year are mustard yellow—named golden rod, a much-muted yellow—paired with assortments of navy or deep reds like merlot, burgundy, wine, or even plum,” says Brooke. “Even in fashion and cosmetics, golden yellow and navy will be huge in the season ahead.” Finally, to top it off, I especially like the garlanddraped ceiling some bridal magazines are featuring. Of course, fresh garland can also work well to cover any exposed ceiling features that may be eyesores. For instance, if your dream of a romantic outdoor tent is hindered by the tent›s unattractive support beams, just wrap them with greenery. For a lush, full garland, use greenery such as ivy, boxwood, or fern. Some experts suggest adding even more intrigue by hanging amaranthus flower spray, clear glass terrariums, or bundles of bare branches. Brides, no matter your pick, branch out and try something new! We wish you all the best on your special day, but more important, may your love stay as fresh in all the years to come as your flowers are on your wedding day!

With its natural beauty and Southern hospitality, Amelia is a superb location for a romantic getaway. Rich in history and pristine natural beauty, the island’s stunning ocean beaches and quaint appeal beckon couples to celebrate their new lives together. Amelia Island has consistently been one of Florida’s bestloved vacation spots for generations, yet it is still one of North Florida’s best kept secrets, and that means an intimate honeymoon experience. Spend your days at one of Amelia’s beautiful beaches, then discover the charm of the downtown Historic District, with boutique shopping, upscale spas, and a host of fine dining options. Amelia Island abounds in world-class bed and breakfasts, art galleries, and live entertainment. And if you love the outdoors, the island has lots to offer, from golf and kayaking to surfing, fishing, and biking. You can do it all on Amelia! For a coastal Florida honeymoon that surrounds you with beauty and bathes you in elegance, look no further than lovely Amelia Island. Whatever accommodations you choose, you’ll celebrate your romantic union in style. In the center of Fernandina Beach, The Fairbanks House has been recognized as one of the most beautiful bed and breakfast inns in the country. Recently named the number one property in Conde Nast’s 2012 Gold List, the inn boasts striking Italianate architecture, along with rooms that are charming and comfortable, many with Jacuzzis and private porches. Innkeeper and owner Theresa Hamilton provides wine and chocolate-covered strawberries upon your arrival, as well as spa robes, upscale amenities, and free WiFi in the rooms. “We cater to romance,” says Hamilton. “We are all about quiet, romantic getaways, and we can accommodate every need.” Several of the oversized rooms even have small kitchens and all rooms have coffee makers. A two-course breakfast, complimentary use of bikes, a pool and beach equipment, along with evening beverages and hors d’oeuvres, round out the carefree pampering that couples will remember for a lifetime. Equally charming is The Amelia Island Williams House, a beautifully restored Victorian mansion on a quiet street close to the town center. This award-winning inn features charming spacious guest rooms with working fireplaces, baths with whirlpool tubs for two, elegant bedding, and all of the amenities you need for an atmosphere for romance and relaxation. Their honeymoon packages feature chocolate-dipped strawberries, dinners for two, and romantic horse-drawn carriage rides through the quaint seaside town. A three course gourmet breakfast is served each morning in the dining room, plus complimentary beverages and snacks are available all day, as well as bikes, beach towels, and guest chairs for relaxing on the beach. Innkeepers Byron and Deborah McCutchen invite you to sit on their wide verandahs underneath live oak trees dripping with Spanish moss while you “wine” down the day, and enjoy views of their serene gardens, fountains, and koi pond.
Luxury honeymoon packages filled with romance, pampering, history & fun.
