As the publishers of AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS, we have the genuine pleasure twice each year of writing about one of the most important occasions in anyone’s life: their wedding. It gives us great satisfaction to spotlight in each issue some wonderful couples who are beginning their lives together here. As we are often told, these happy stories of hope and love make for great reading. It is not an overstatement to say that in the last decade Amelia Island has become one of the top destinations wedding spots in the Southeast, and perhaps in the entire country. Since we began publishing this magazine a dozen years ago, Amelia Island has attracted a great number of destination weddings by couples who want to celebrate an unforgettable wedding weekend with their family and friends. With its historic churches, stunning natural beauty, and a wide variety of outstanding venues, it’s not hard to see why our charming island paradise has become so popular. But, while Amelia Island’s popularity as a destination wedding hotspot has grown, we have also taken great satisfaction in featuring many Amelia Island families who have celebrated their child’s wedding here at home. In this issue, four of our five featured wedding stories have roots on Amelia Island, and the fifth is a couple from Jacksonville Beach who just loves this little corner of the world. It was very intimate.” In planning the wedding, Amanda and Chris both knew that an Amelia Island destination wedding was the best idea. “I have so many friends and family here,” says Amanda. “And Chris’s family is mostly from New England, so it was an ideal vacation for them. We enlisted the help of Lorna Meehan from Amelia Island Weddings and Events. She really helped us connect the dots. Many of our vendors had worked together before, and everything was coordinated so well.” Amanda and Chris booked rooms at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort for all their guests, including a small house AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 15
which served as a staging area for the bridesmaids to prepare for the wedding on Saturday morning. “That worked out very well. It was nice to have a lot of space to get ready before the wedding,” remembers Amanda. “And being so close to Walkers Landing, our guests didn’t have far to go after the reception.” Amanda and Chris held their wedding ceremony at St. Michael’s Catholic Church on May 27, officiated by Father Jose Kallukalam. “St. Michael’s is my church home, and it’s very special to me,” says Amanda. “We held our reception at Walkers Landing because of its great natural beauty. Our flowers and décor were created by Shea Hopely.” Directly after the ceremony, the 150 guests were treated to a cocktail hour from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., accompanied by a crab cake station. An interesting twist to the menu was serving a duel dish of lamb and fish, and having the salads pre-set before guests arrived. “This allowed everyone to start eating at the same time, and it worked out really well,” notes Amanda. 16 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
The wedding cake was provided by Delores Gilyard, and guests enjoyed dancing to the tunes of The Faze Band of Jacksonville. A very special moment during the wedding celebration was when Amanda and her mother danced together. “My mother was my primary parent growing up,” says Amanda. “Our mother-daughter dance was a tribute to her and how much she means to me.” Since Amanda did most of the wedding planning, Chris agreed to plan their honeymoon, and plan he did, putting together an 11-day tour of Italy that included Tuscany, Venice, and the Amalfi Coast. “I was so impressed with the trip,” says Amanda. “We were unplugged the entire honeymoon. It was romantic and simply perfect.” Happily married for nearly six months now, Amanda and Chris divide their time between Washington, D.C. and Evanston, Illinois. Chris is a vice president at Rock Creek Group, a global investment firm in Washington, and Amanda is completing her MBA at Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in Evanston. He kept asking for three years, and finally she said, “Yes!” To a date, that is. The couple spent the afternoon in the small town of Abbeville, South Carolina near their college. “After that, we were inseparable. I told him we’d be married one day, and he laughed it off, but he never disagreed,” shares bride Casey Knight. The couple spent the next few months travelling around the Carolinas together. Omar Melendez grew up in Puerto Rico, and soon he was eager to take Casey back to meet his family. After this trip, he knew he didn’t want to be apart from her, and he relocated to Amelia Island, where Casey grew up. Just a few months later, the couple took a ski trip with Casey’s family to North Carolina, where it didn’t snow a single time they were there! So instead of skiing, they toured vineyards, went sightseeing, and got engaged! “At one scenic look-out, I was taking 18 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
a picture, and when I turned around, Omar was behind me on one knee!” She finally said, “I do,” at The Ocean Club of Amelia. “I am an event planner and worked at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. I’d been planning my wedding day since I could walk,” laughs Casey. The couple chose The Ocean Club of Amelia as their venue because it perfectly fit their vision of an intimate, “beachy” wedding, yet with traditional class, and it had the ideal ambiance to marry their two cultures. “We mixed the two cultures—Amelia Island and Puerto Rican —in everything: food, music, decorations.” The couple decided on a celebration that really fit the theme of their event, with a sunset ceremony on the beach followed by a cocktail reception. The black-and-white ceremony was gorgeous on Amelia Island’s beautiful beach, with a bursting green leaf aisle and
floral design provided by Let Destiny Design. The bride’s father constructed the altar pieces, and her friend, Jennifer Strozensky, painted them. “We strived to make everything family-oriented, since it was really about two becoming one.” The Melendez’s Gold Retriever, Molly, even served as the ring bearer! Catering by Rick Laughlin served a Puerto Ricaninspired menu of churrasco and chimichurri, chips, salsa, guacamole, and a queso fountain. Guests adored sipping tropical margaritas, mojitos, sangria, and Coronas from their “Casey and Omar” custom cups, as DJ Jason Garcia set the mood. Golden pineapple centerpieces highlighted the tables, and everyone was especially fond of the wedding cake, an almond pound cake with raspberry compote filling and whipped coconut icing, that the bride’s grandmother, Ruby NeeSmith, baked and topped with her very own cake topper from the 1950’s. Most of the guests were not from a beach town, and spending time on the sand was everyone’s favorite part of the wedding weekend. Guests enjoyed their stays near the beach at Amelia Hotel at the Beach, Hampton Inn Sadler Road, and the Residence Inn Amelia Island. Family and friends gathered for the rehearsal dinner at Arte Pizza, Omar’s favorite restaurant on the island. The couple made sure to “shop local” for the bridesmaid and groomsmen gifts, including Lily & Laura bracelets, skinny ties, and soap from Lemongrass on Centre Street. For Casey and Omar, all of their wedding wishes came true as the two of them became one on this special day. They recently relocated to Virginia, where Omar will attend medical school and Casey will pursue her dream of planning events and helping other brides celebrate their own special days! Michelle & Gage GOLF CLUB OF AMELIA ISLAND By Karen Miller

When Michelle Duprey met Gage Ploegert in high school, she was a freshman and he was a junior. They met at a Fernandina Beach High School football game, both rooting for the Pirates, and they were instantly smitten with each other. But, as often happens with young love, the two of them ended up going their separate ways, until 2010, when they reunited. “Gage and I are polar opposites,” laughs Michelle. “That’s what makes us so perfect for each other!” Not to mention their love for football, fishing, boating, and Savannah. “Gage proposed during a trip to Savannah, at breakfast on the river. We always knew that we would get married some day, but it was still a surprise, and very romantic.” Michelle and Gage are very connected to Fernandina Beach, having grown up on Amelia Island. Michelle’s mother, Kathy, has 20 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
been working as a dental hygienist for Amelia Dental Group for over 20 years, and her dad Rob owns May & Duprey Repair and Remodel Company. Gage’s father is a Jacksonville firefighter, and his mother is a teacher at Bryceville Elementary School. Michelle worked at Fantastic Fudge for many years, and Gage worked at Amelia Island Yacht Basin. “We both have a huge attachment to Amelia Island and its community,” says Michelle. Michelle and Gage decided to get married at The Golf Club of Amelia Island, holding their ceremony at the back end of the golf course, officiated by Leonard Love, affectionately known as “Dr. Love.” “We really wanted an outdoor wedding, and Dr. Love did a beautiful job personalizing our ceremony,” shares Michelle. “We then held a cocktail hour and reception inside
the club, with dancing outdoors, hosted by DJ Charles of White Tie Events.” Michelle wanted to use as many local vendors as possible, and she was able to pull it all together with the help of event planner Sune Holt from Omni Amelia Island Plantation. “My parents were also very involved with the planning process,” says Michelle. Michelle and Gage began their weekend festivities with an Amelia River Cruises sunset tour on Friday night, and then their rehearsal dinner at Pepper’s Mexican Grill and Cantina in downtown Fernandina Beach. On Saturday morning, The Beauty Bar provided Michelle and her bridesmaids with a relaxing hair and makeup experience, with mimosas and an exquisite breakfast catered by The Picnic Basket. “It was the perfect way to start our wedding day!” remembers Michelle. Michelle and Gage’s reception included dinner with a pasta station, a grits station, and brisket, salads, and other Southern specialties. The reception also featured a wedding cake and cupcake tier provided by Bliss Cakery, plus a photo booth, and lots of dance tunes. “We really wanted fun music,” says Michelle. “It set the mood for our guests, and everyone had a great time dancing.” After the wedding, the newlyweds spent their honeymoon touring Europe for two weeks, with stops in Paris, Florence, Venice, Naples, and Rome. “Our honeymoon was amazing,” says Michelle. “It was the trip of a lifetime.” Today, Michelle and Gage live in Yulee, where she works in human resources and he works as an operations manager. “We’ve both formed lasting friendships and relationships here,” says Michelle. “It’s the perfect place to start our new life together.” AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 21

“We were headed on a trip to New York, and I was a mess,” laughs Macy Barbee. “I was not packed, my suitcase was broken, and I got home late from work.” Michael was smart to leverage this chaos as an excuse to be in Macy’s apartment when she rolled in, and not just with a new suitcase, but also a new diamond ring for their weekend in the Big Apple! Macy spent her high school and college summers on Amelia Island, and it’s where she chose to bring her future husband to meet her family in 2015. “Amelia Island is a special place for both of us,” says Michael. “When we decided on a smaller, destination wedding, we knew this was the place.” The couple wanted a non-traditional venue and happily found The Amelia Island Williams House, a romantic bed-andbreakfast inn in downtown Fernandina Beach. An antebellum mansion built in 1856, The Williams House sits under a stunning 500-year-old live oak tree laden with Spanish moss. “We were astounded by the beautiful setting and thrilled for our families to be in one house together, to spend time on the porches rocking and getting to know one another,” the groom says. And that is exactly what the families did this past April. A favorite memory of the Barbees is a walk downtown to a family dinner at Joe’s 2nd Street Bistro. “The location of our historic B&B is appreciated by all,” shares owners Maria & Chris Page. “It’s a short walk to Centre Street, and we sit within the Historic District. We are a perfect venue for your wedding if you dream of a setting where time stands still and graciousness is a way of life.” On Friday of the wedding weekend, guests from around the country arrived at Hampton Inn & Suites Amelia Island 22 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
overlooking the harbor. “My mom, who was instrumental in every detail of the weekend, prepared welcome bags with a letter from Michael and me suggesting things to do, including the Saturday Farmer’s Market, shops, favorite beach accesses, and of course a taste of Fernandina’s Fantastic Fudge,” explains Macy. That evening, everyone enjoyed a party at Café Karibo, followed by fun at The Palace Saloon. On the morning of the wedding, Macy remembers how she sought to shake her nerves and enjoy some time with close friends before the ceremony. “My girlfriends and I went for a long walk on the beautiful beach,” she says. “I saw Michael throughout the day, and it was fun—together – to watch everything that we’d worked so hard to plan unfold,” says Macy. Just before the ceremony, the couple joined on the second-floor balcony of the William House for a first-look, and they will never forget the beauty of the
moment, the venue, and looking down and seeing their family and friends arriving to celebrate their love. A long-time friend of the bride performed the wedding. “The best part was that he asked both of our parents for martial advice and included that wisdom in our ceremony,” Macy reflects. Guests relaxed to music by guitarist Richard Stratton, who accompanied Tim Munro, three-time Grammy Award-winning flautist and brother-in-law of the bride, for the ceremony and reception. After the couple said, “I do!,” guests moved to the courtyard for specialty cocktails, appetizers, and specially prepared cuisine. Six months later, the Barbees are still packing their suitcases and traveling on the weekends, including a September visit for a family reunion at the Williams House, where they’ll always remember their unforgettable wedding day on Amelia Island. Francesca Nicoloso was about to remove her profile from an online dating site when Joseph Santa Maria spied it, and thought they might make a good match. The couple began chatting online and eventually agreed to meet in person in December 2014. “We went ice skating at Adventure Island at Jacksonville Landing, and I was so bad at it,” laughs Francesca. “But it was fun!” The fun never stopped for the two of them as they continued to date, and eventually they became engaged on Valentine’s Day in 2016. “We definitely consider ourselves a fun couple,” she says. “We have such a great time together!” Francesca and Joe bought a house in Jacksonville Beach, and Joe proposed as they were moving in. “Joe asked me to go upstairs because he had a surprise for me,” says Francesca. “He 24 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
made a beautiful dinner, and there were flowers on the table, and next to the flowers was a ring.” Their year-long engagement was busy, and fun, as they settled into their new home and planned their Florida wedding. “We both love this area, and when we visited Oyster Bay Yacht Club, we knew it was the perfect place to get married.” Francesca was especially drawn to the club’s veranda and pool, with panoramic views of the Intracoastal Waterway and live oak trees covered with Spanish moss, in addition to Oyster Bay’s proficient event planning experts. “Francesca and Joe were such a pleasure to work with,” said Ashton Hunter, Oyster Bay’s event planner. “They are so much fun, a truly adorable couple.” Francesca and Joe’s April wedding weekend began with a rehearsal dinner at Bar Zin with the wedding party, followed by
drinks with their out-of-town guests. Their wedding ceremony was held on Saturday evening, so the bride and bridesmaids enjoyed a hair and makeup session at Oyster Bay’s onsite 3-story villa, hosted by Nicki Davis from Frangipani Hair Salon of Jacksonville Beach, while the groom and groomsmen relaxed in another room, aptly named the “man cave.” Amelia Island Trolleys transported their guests to Oyster Bay from the historic harborfront Hampton Inn & Suites for their 5 p.m. ceremony held beneath the cover of live oak trees. Officiated by their close friend Drew Vaughan, the ceremony featured a special wine box, in which bride, groom, and their parents placed letters to be read on their five and ten year anniversaries, along with two bottles of wine. Dottie B’s provided colorful flowers, especially designed to “pop” against the rustic, natural setting that Oyster Bay is famous for. But the real star of the wedding may have been the couple’s dog, Hugo, who was a member of the wedding party, and one of their very favorite “people.”
The reception began with a gourmet buffet dinner featuring a carving station and shrimp and grits, which was a big hit with the guests. After photos were taken, DJ Will Deaton provided music, and the dancing went on until 11 p.m. “In addition to our first dance, mother/son dance, and father/daughter dance, we also had a last dance together,” says Francesca. “This was a nice way to wind down the evening and prepare our guests for their trolley ride back to the hotel.” Throughout the weekend, guests treated themselves to shopping, fine dining, and exploring the area. “It was great having everyone downtown. Our guests were able to walk everywhere, and we were able to meet up with our friends,” says Francesca. The couple stayed at the Hampton Inn & Suites on their wedding night, and went on a cruise to Mexico a month later for their honeymoon. Today, Francesca and Joe are still having fun working and playing in Jacksonville Beach, where Joe works as a materials engineer and Francesca works as a physician assistant. Horizons Restaurant, located at 5472 First Coast Highway on Amelia’s south end, has become an Amelia Island icon to locals and visitors alike. Nestled behind Berkshire Hathaway Home Services in a quiet, rustic setting, the restaurant has been serving tasty, American dishes with a continental flair for 24 years. Chef and owner Courtney Thompson prides herself on serving food using only the finest, freshest ingredients available and treating her guests as if they were part of the family. “When we host a wedding, rehearsal dinner, bridal shower, or any gathering at Horizons, we take care of all the details,” says Thompson. “Our dishes satisfy everyone in your group, no matter what your food preferences are. We’ve become one of the area’s top choices for parties and gatherings.” 28 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
Horizons features an upscale, yet quaint and elegant setting, including a private dining room and party area, alfresco dining, an elite wine list, craft beer choices, and a customized food and drink menu. Clients may choose from a large variety of entrees, including beef, lamb, seafood, chicken, and even gourmet vegetarian choices. “We also provide custom menus and dishes, really anything you like, from appetizers to salads to desserts,” says Courtney. “And speaking of desserts, you’ll definitely want to include our famous dessert soufflés! We’re the only restaurant that serves soufflés piping hot from the oven, complete with Crème Anglais.” Horizons offers complete buyouts in their restaurant for clients with a large group who also want plenty of space for
themselves and their guests. Thompson offers lunch and dinner menus, brunches, and even off-site catering for any event. “Here at the restaurant we can seat 140 diners,” says Thompson. “Guests may choose to eat inside or out. We also have space for a band or DJ, dancing, and comfortable powder rooms. We provide beautiful linens along with decorations, flowers, and even cakes.” Some of Thompson’s appetizers include Grilled Shrimp and Asparagus, Blue Cheese Risotto, Lobster Bisque, and Smoked Salmon Timbale. Salads include Mixed Greens with Dried Cranberries, Bacon, Pear Tomatoes with Crumbled Goat Cheese, and Baby Arugula Salad with Granny Smith Apples, Candied Pecans, and Aged Cheddar. Among the most popular entrees at Horizons are Roast Rack of Lamb with Mint, Dijon Crust, and Rosemary au Jus,
Pan Seared Diver Scallops with Artichokes and Tomato Salad, and Potato Crusted Grouper with Citrus Beurre Blanc. “We are experts at pairing wine and beer with each of our courses,” says Thompson. “It’s a really nice way to treat your guests. By Gigi Grubner and Jennifer Ryals When thinking about engagements, images of a young bride and groom planning their dream wedding often come to mind. A young couple deciding on a ring will usually pick a more traditional solitaire setting, taking their time to research diamonds and bands online before making a decision. However, what we don’t often consider is the bride who may be getting married for the second or third time, or the bride who has waited until later in life to tie the knot for the first time. These brides are just as important – and just as excited – to pick out their perfect ring. What are some of the things that these brides-to-be look for when picking out this most important symbol of love? Wedding magazines and websites are usually geared towards first-time brides, but jewelry stores like ours also see a lot of brides who have already had their first big wedding and want this occasion to be a more laid-back experience and an expression of their own style. A lot of our over-35 brides and second-time brides like the idea of a non-traditional wedding 30 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
ring. They may choose a diamond band, an estate or antique ring, or a ring with colored stones. Some are also including their children and grandchildren in the celebration with stackable bands featuring the children’s birthstones. One option for second-time brides are rings incorporating their favorite color. Also, many of these brides and grooms will choose to design their own custom matching wedding bands. This is always a good way to show off your personal style. There may even be family heirloom rings that would bring special meaning to the event for the couple. Many second-time brides and over-35 brides also have the luxury of a larger budget. They are often more financially stable and are able to choose a ring they really love, which they may not have been able to afford the first time. Or maybe their style has changed over time. An older bride and groom will often come in together to pick out a ring rather than the groom-to-be deciding on his own and surprising his bride. The ring for this bride may also make more of a statement. The bride is confident, knows what she likes, and wants a ring that proclaims it. Her ring will reflect her personal style and will not simply conform to the latest “trends”. She will frequently lean towards vintage wedding bands because they carry an added significance in comparison to traditional styles. There are really no set rules when it comes to bridal jewelry. The classic diamond solitaire and classic band are timeless and will always be elegant for a bride of any age or stage in life. But there are so many options for brides today that go beyond the traditional idea of engagement rings and wedding bands. Couples younger and older should feel free to choose a ring that represents their love and individual tastes. Their rings will serve as a reflection of their personal and unique style. a black & white affair In this bridal season, black makes its debut on the wedding scene in accents, bows, gloves, and even complete gowns, while capes and ruffles remain popular. By Julie Simmons Neiman Marcus once said, “Women who wear black lead colorful lives.” Brides, are you colorful? Would you ever consider wearing black on your wedding day? If the idea sounds intriguing, I invite you to a tour of the runways this season which include, yes, black! Before our grandmothers go into too much shock, let them know how extremely tasteful is black’s debut in accent pieces including sheer bows, waistline ribbons, gloves, and even hairpieces. Designer Kelly Faetanini explains that this new “dark romance” trend is inspired in part by Shakespeare. If this sounds appealing to you, some designers of course offer more, such as white bodices balanced with skirts overflowing with black ostrich feathers. Or, for the extreme, Vera Wang, who has surprised us with red gowns in years past, offers numerous all-over 32 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
black gowns this season, which combine this new palate with all of the other fun trends on the runways this year. If black isn’t your favorite, then checkout the “something blue” inspired gowns. Pale cornflower-blue underlays paired with white lace embellishments work beautifully for an elegant garden wedding, and stunning powder-blue ball gowns can create a royal atmosphere. David’s Bridal presents gorgeous pale blue options some paired with white, and Reem Acra offers a blue ball-gown with gold embroidery. The word “gloves” may have caught your eye! Bridal gloves are everywhere this season, whether in solid, satin, wrist to elbow, sheer, embroidered, or barely there. They’re a welcome addition to many designer’s collections. to be blanketed with capes and caplets. This season, they’re taking on a delicate, beautiful airy feel in sheer and embroidered styles. You can’t go wrong in choosing a cape in crop of full-length, feathers, beaded, metallic, or even sleeveless with a tie, as nearly every designer embraced this element. If you are not interested in capes or caplets, ladies are wearing tops with shoulder cutouts every day, so it’s natural for this detail to extend to wedding fashion. It’s especially appealing when paired with sleeves. Theia’s “Ellie” gown with shoulder cut outs and bell sleeves is a favorite, as is “Kristin” which is similar but in an off-the-shoulder presentation. Some gowns are offering sheer corsets, and this trend takes on a certain elegance with its use of sparkles, beads, and embroidery where coverage is offered. Conversely, high-necks are also very popular this season, either as a light (or heavily embroidered) lace choker or ruffled halter-top. Also continuing from last season are pearls, bows, and ruffles. Pearls are embellishing the bodice, the skirt, all over, or just on a choker. And yes, please keep tying it up with a bow, and keep it big, bold, and maybe even black to make a big wedding statement! Finally, ruffles are still in style this year, and they are the perfect option to add depth to a petite silhouette. Accomplishing this with a bit of an “edge” to the ruffles, a fringe-effect adds drama this season to skirts and even shoulders. beach wedding By Lisa Presnell, PWC Getting married with the sunshine on your face, the sand between your toes, the breeze flowing through your hair, and the sound of the waves crashing in the background—it sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? Weddings on the beach are so beautiful. Beach weddings tend to be a little more costeffective and are ideal for elopements and small weddings. In recent years, they have become increasingly popular. There are, however, some important things you should consider before you begin planning. For a large wedding, ideally, you should secure a beach wedding with a local hotel or resort. They would handle the setup, obtain any required permits, and ensure your space at the beach. For those who like to do-it-yourself, the beaches on Amelia Island are public beaches. There are some areas that are more quiet than others. There is always a chance that someone else could be planning their wedding on the exact same day in the exact same 36 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
place. Securing an area with a local hotel or resort can help you avoid this problem. If you choose to do-it-yourself, check with the city or county to see if there are any permits or fees required when having a wedding on the beach in a public location. Beach weddings tend to be hard work. Setting up chairs and arches take time, so be sure to hire someone to set up and break down for you. Parking and restroom facilities for your guests could also be an issue. Be mindful of that in your search for a location. It could also be hot on the beach, so providing bottled water near the ceremony site would be a nice treat for your guests. You might also consider sunscreen, bug spray, parasols, and fans. What will you do in the event of inclement weather? You will definitely need a backup plan that you are comfortable with. As much as we would like to think Mother Nature will cooperate, she sometimes doesn’t. Don’t let that ruin your day. In the end, the result is the same: you will be married to the love of your life and celebrating with family and friends. Last, but not least, consider hiring a professional planner to handle all the details for you. Often, you can purchase a package to include the officiant, photographer, flowers, chairs, and more. Many brides and grooms have learned that having the details handled for you allows you to enjoy a stress-free wedding day. All you have to do is show up! With proper planning—and a little help from Mother Nature—your beach wedding will be a fabulous day to remember. design & décor By Julie Simmons Brides, get ready, because everything is trending colorful! After seasons of neutrals, pastels, green, and rustic, color is ready for its comeback, with trending styles in wedding floral and décor turning bold, high in drama, and whimsical. Let’s start with rustic, since brides have gone to the barn to get hitched quite a bit lately. Rustic is still definitely in, but the mason jars, burlap, and baby’s breath are transitioning to nature-inspired décor. With Pantone’s naming of “greenery” as its 2017 color, the barn has turned into a showcase of branches, lanterns, and lots of décor that goes vertical. One new vibe in the stable this season are bursts of color inside lanterns, and in floral choices, where the dahlia has been very popular. Speaking of vertical and colorful, this is a theme itself. Modern brides are fringing the ceiling, going to extremes with rainbow lighting, hanging swings or tree branches from the rafters, and even concluding their events with fireworks! 38 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
If you’re a fan of colorful, you might like whimsical ornamenting for your wedding day. It feels like a Dr. Seuss storybook! Think layers of colorful balloons, HUGE—in brilliant hues—bouquets, and a plethora of pretty deserts, cupcakes and petit four platters in an array of color. In this theme, you might consider using projector technology that displays colorful images, transforming the aura of your soiree. And brides are doing just that, transforming their day into an experience for their guests, with games and entertainment galore. For instance, how about a live painter to document the day, or a caricature artist in lieu of a photo booth? When it comes to games, we’ve seen lawn recreation for a few seasons, but this year the trend is exploring new territory, with hilarious Mad Libs sometimes included in the wedding program. For those of us a bit more traditional, vintage is still popular. Brides are continuing to incorporate old world items and antiques in their design. Think about riding away in an old car, using heirlooms as centerpieces, or even on your cake. Local bride Casey Melendez used her grandmother’s 1950 cake topper as a special memento for her Amelia Island wedding. If an antique car isn’t quite your getaway style, have no fear, brides are making grand getaways this season in boats, carriages, on motorcycles, and even in helicopters! If you’re a bride looking to mix things up on your special day, start at the beginning. Get creative with your invitations, incorporating the colorful and the whimsical with glow-in-the-dark invites. When guests arrive, consider a gift-lounge at your host-hotel. This takes welcome bags to a new level, with an entire room of snacks or local treats where guests can socialize. Or why not rearrange your day’s order of events? Many brides are opting for a pre-wedding cocktail hour or coffee bar for a morning wedding. Also, consider your “stage” this season. Why walk down an aisle with guests on either side when you can make a circle of friendship and say “I do” inside a ring of love? And don’t be afraid who or what to include in your circle. Brides, if your BFF is furry, add him or her to the guest list. or better yet, the wedding party! Another intriguing idea in your décor is to experiment not just with the arrangement of seating but also the seating itself. If you’re hosting a beach event, how about beach chairs, beach towels with your new monogram, or if it’s a bit fancier, low wicker stools. The opportunities are endless with a dash of imagination.
