LETTER FROM THE
As the publishers of Amelia Island Weddings, we have the unique pleasure twice each year to present one of the most important occasions in anyone’s life: their wedding. It gives us great satisfaction to spotlight in each of these issues some of the terrific couples who have begun their lives together here on Amelia Island. As we are often told, these happy stories of hope and love make for great reading. It is not an overstatement to say that in the last decade Amelia Island has become one of the top destinations wedding spots in the Southeast, and perhaps even in the entire country. Since we began publishing this magazine over a dozen years ago, Amelia Island has attracted a great number of destination weddings by couples looking to celebrate an unforgettable wedding weekend with their family and friends. With its historic churches, stunning natural beauty, and a wide variety of outstanding venues, it’s not hard to see why our enchanting island paradise has become so popular. But, while Amelia Island’s popularity as a destination wedding hotspot has grown, we have also taken great satisfaction in featuring a number of Amelia Island families who have celebrated their child’s wedding here at home. It is a privilege to be able share

these local occasions with you. It’s always fun to see how a family with Amelia Island roots celebrates their wedding here because they know well many of the fun-filled places on the island that are perfect for the different events that make up a wedding weekend, whether it’s fishing and golf, nails and lunch, kayaking, barbeques, rehearsal dinners, after-parties, or next-day brunches. In this issue, all five of our featured wedding stories have connections to Amelia Island, either through family vacations since childhood, parents or family living on the island, or work. These couples have used their local connections to create unforgettable destination weddings for their family and friends. The stories we share with you are always unique, and always inspiring. In addition to the couples featured here, we want to congratulate everyone who has celebrated a wedding in the last six months. Why are weddings so endlessly fascinating? Seeing people at this magical moment in their lives is a deeply moving experience, a hopeful moment that is both heartwarming and life-affirming. As in the stories from this issue, the heart of the occasion always shines through in every wedding, whether large or small, lavish or simple. We hope you enjoy reading this issue of Amelia Island Weddings as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Visitors and residents alike know all about Amelia’s unique allure: the long stretches of unspoiled beach, scenic pockets of marsh, and moss-draped oaks. Whether you’re a resident, a frequent visitor, or a newcomer to Amelia, we hope our magazine will inspire you to imagine the extraordinary possibilities available to you on this beautiful 13-mile-long barrier island.

The Ocean Club of Amelia, a converted beach house next to Seaside Park, offers gorgeous views of the dunes and the ocean with the intimate feeling of a private beach home. It can easily accommodate larger events as well as more intimate weddings. If your heart is set on a beach ceremony, a path leads from the back garden through the dunes, and if you want something more formal, you’ll love the lush 26 ft. x 36 ft. back lawn. Nestled between the clubhouse and the dunes, it can accommodate weddings from 80 to 110 guests. The second floor offers a lovely room for dancing, with a built-in bar and a covered dining porch seating 50. The colors are soft and neutral, the rooms stylish, and string lights add that touch of romance every bride is looking for! The second venue is Sliders Seaside Grill, which offers second-floor banquet rooms accommodating groups from 50 to 150. Newly decorated in soft shades with romantic lighting, the second floor has spectacular beach and ocean views. A path from Sliders leads directly to the beach for easy access. Wild sea oats cascade along the path and wildflowers add splashes of red and purple, making the spot come alive with color and romance. White sands and blue skies, the perfect place to make your wedding memories! The grand stateroom seats 100 guests, with additional seating on the covered veranda, which runs the length of the second floor, accommodating up to 64 guests. The Breakers Bar and Lounge is perfect for post-ceremony cocktails and dancing. We invite you to “come get the feeling.” Visit www. AND THAT’S NOT ALL Of course, there are lots of options to choose from when you’re considering an island wedding. On Amelia, there are many lovely bed & breakfast inns that can provide an elegant and intimate setting for your special day. The circa 1856 Amelia Island Williams House on South Ninth Street in downtown Fernandina Beach is owned and operated by Chris and Maria Page. Beautifully landscaped gardens and a spacious courtyard are the perfect venue for a wedding celebration whether intimate or grand. Smaller weddings and receptions can also be held in the elegant dining room and Victorian parlor. Chris and Maria’s attention to detail has created a special place for an island wedding and they are ready to help you with all the arrangements. The beautifully restored Victorian is also on a quiet street downtown within easy range of all the restaurants, shops, and sightseeing that the downtown has to offer. Also in the heart of historic downtown Fernandina Beach is The Florida House Inn on South Third Street, the oldest continually operating hotel in Florida. The Florida House Inn has undergone a painstaking historic restoration and features beautiful heart pine floors, a 350-year old live oak tree, an immaculate courtyard and gardens, original fireplaces, string lighting throughout the courtyard, a beautiful mermaid fountain, and 17 luxurious guest rooms. The courtyard can accommodate weddings of up to 200 people, and the inside dining room is perfect for rehearsal dinners and dinner events, all featuring the Inn’s delicious Southern cuisine. The Mermaid Bar offers live entertainment and it is a great spot to enjoy after the ceremony or reception. Dana Schefke is ready to help you with all of your wedding planning needs. If you want to be in the heart of the Historic District, the Hampton Inn & Suites Historic Harborfront Hotel is your answer. “’Location! Location! Located on the Intracoastal Waterway overlooking the Fernandina Beach Marina, the Hampton Inn & Suites offers spacious and comfortable accommodations. Joe’s 2nd Street Bistro, located in the heart of the historic downtown, can also graciously accommodate wedding receptions, rehearsal dinners, and private parties. Their helpful staff will help you design the perfect menu of carefully prepared and delicious food for your wedding celebration, and Joe’s has an excellent wine cellar to compliment whatever menu you choose. Of course, being by the beach also means enjoying the casual beach atmosphere like at The Crab Trap in historic downtown Fernandina Beach. Located on South 2nd Street, this restaurant is a great place for a rehearsal dinner or small reception. The Crab Trap has been a local favorite for 26 years. Owned and operated by the Germano family, The Crab Trap’s nautical décor, friendly service, and great food make it the perfect place for a special Fernandina Beach celebration. The Crab Trap serves fresh local seafood, as well as steaks, lobster, chicken, and oysters. With banquet facilities, a private dining room overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway, two full bars, and two fireplaces, The Crab Trap can accommodate your every need. Nestled under the live oaks in Palmetto Walk, Bar Zin is a chic neighborhood bistro that’s all about having fun with family and friends, while enjoying great American bistro food and wine. What better place for a very special gathering of friends and family? With an outdoor brick-paved courtyard under the canopy cover of the live oaks, as well as a wraparound porch and elegant dining room and bar, the indoor and outdoor spaces are ready to welcome small intimate parties, or larger gatherings of up to 49 people. (The courtyard can hold another 49.) Whether it’s a rehearsal dinner, a bridal luncheon, a small reception, or just a gathering of friends, owner Tim Seyda’s passion for excellent wine and food and his attention to detail promise to make every event one to remember. Set on 760 sprawling acres, The Barn at Cottonwood Ranch is a one-of-a-kind venue with large windows and a grand front porch set on a ranch amidst beautiful ponds, lush pasture, and ancient hardwoods. Owners Karen and Larry Brantley have created a stunning space for weddings, anniversaries, and other special events, and it’s the perfect environment for a secluded and exclusive celebration. The Barn was built using hand-hewn cypress, a repurposed syrup kettle fire pit, and reclaimed railings from a 19th-century bank, creating an elegant space with clean lines, natural tones, and an open feeling. The venue also includes a bridal lounge, groom’s lounge, downstairs bar, commercial kitchen, an onsite smokehouse, and a large gas fire pit. With room for up to 299 guests on its secluded setting, your guests will enjoy a celebration they’ll never forget. gem in the story is a century-plus legacy of love, commitment, and history here on the island. “I’ve come to Amelia Island every year since I was born,” explains Kara. The bride’s parents discovered Amelia Island’s

diamond, my mom already had an appointment for us to talk to the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort about the details!” The nuptials were planned for September 16, 2017, a beautiful month to get married on Amelia Island, except this ended up being the weekend following Hurricane Irma! “When my wedding planner, a.k.a. my aunt, and I showed up on Tuesday, the property was a disaster, and the resort closed. Trees were in the roads, and debris was everywhere. But
they let us in, and we even stayed at our condo without power on the first day.” Yet the show would go on. To illustrate Omni’s determination, the power was back on by Wednesday, on Thursday the wedding party was relaxing poolside, and on Saturday the property was pristine again, with little sign of the storm it had just endured. “We can’t say enough about the amazing service they provided,” says Kara. Another challenge the wedding party had to overcome was flight cancelations AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 15
due to the hurricane. “Our friends flights were canceled left and right, but everyone still managed to make it!” says Kara. “Some people even hopped in their cars and drove 10 to 12 hours to get here. Not one person declined!” On arrival, they gathered for a welcome party at the Falcon’s Nest at the Omni. On Friday, everyone enjoyed the Florida sand and saltwater before an incredible rehearsal dinner at Sliders Seaside Grill, where they celebrated in a private upstairs room at the lovely oceanfront venue. “I’ve been going there my whole life,” Kara laughs. “My 16 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
grandmother always insists it’s going to be her last vacation and last visit to Slider’s each year, but she keeps making it back!” Saturday at six o’clock, the couple said, “I do” at the Amelia Plantation Chapel, with Kara’s hometown minister officiating. After the vows, Evan slipped Kara’s maternal grandmother’s wedding band onto her left finger, and Kara slipped Evan’s paternal grandfather’s band on his – a symbol of a combined 120 years of love and commitment! Pam Bell Photography captured each of these memories.
And now it was time to celebrate! A trolley arrived and took the wedding party to Walker’s Landing for an outdoor cocktail hour with acoustic guitar entertainment by a family friend. “The weather was peaceful and sunny, the perfect ending to a rough week for Amelia Island. And we were the first ones at the venue. I wanted to personally greet each of our 160 guests —and be the first to see the décor!” The décor was simply beautiful. “Walker’s Landing speaks for itself,” Kara says. “I kept it simple and all green— eucalyptus and a few white flowers.” The menu included Salt-Crusted Grouper, Shrimp and Grits, a whole hog, oysters, pimento cheese hush puppies, and they
toped it off with Chocolate Death Cake, which the couple confirmed tasted great on their first anniversary! When the reception ended, family and friends continued the celebration at the Falcon’s Nest, back where they had started the weekend. The crowd relaxed and rested beside the Omni pool on Sunday before enjoying one final family dinner together. Today, the Johnson’s are settling into married life in Birmingham, Alabama, where she is a pediatric nurse practitioner and he is a private banking officer. “We stay busy and look forward to our next Amelia Island vacation—we’ve already visited three times since we said, ‘I do!’” AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 17
Jordan & Robb THE FLORIDA HOUSE INN By Julie Simmons
Photography by Page Teahan Photography
“You had me at Mellow,” the koozies at Jordan and Robb Smith’s wedding read. Mellow Mushroom, that is, in Jacksonville, where this pair of teachers first met. With a mathematician’s mind, Robb pulled off a fabulous engagement night, enticing his brideto-be to a wine cellar, where he presented her with a diamond ring (and, of course, a bottle of wine) were presented. “When I turned around, there he was on one knee,” Jordan smiles. “He told me that our dinner reservations were in an hour, so I had a whole sixty minutes to call my family and friends!” And call she did, telling everyone to start making plans to visit Amelia Island for their nuptials. “We visited the Florida House Inn when we were dating and loved its great location in downtown Fernandina Beach. And Robb’s grandparents are buried at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, so it was a perfect match.” 18 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
Planning was a lot of fun for this couple because they were set on making it personal and being involved in the process. “We were committed to using local talent,” says Jordan. This smart bride got started by asking Florida House Inn Wedding Coordinator Dana Schefke her top three favorite vendors in each category. “And just like that, I booked the Honey Badgers Band, Dottie “B” Florist, and The Beauty Bar. Three great decisions, thanks to Dana!” One illustration of Jordan’s collaboration was her request that Dottie “B” Florist help her gather sunflowers, baby’s breath, and eucalyptus, which she confirmed were all fresh and amazing. Once she had her ingredients, the bridesmaids adored arranging the floral pieces with Jordan. The couple’s guests arrived on Friday and filled the 17-room Florida House Inn with them. “This is the best venue,” says Dana.
“You stay with your family and friends. You eat breakfast together. It’s intimate and fun.” The overflow of out-of-towners enjoyed the Hampton Inn & Suites Historic Harbor Front Hotel. In addition to relishing the bed-and-breakfast inn, the wedding party appreciated other Amelia Island amenities, like a tee time at The Golf Club of Amelia Island for the groomsmen, and an oceanfront luncheon at Sliders Seaside Grill for the ladies. That evening, everyone gathered at the newly reopened Down Under Restaurant for the rehearsal dinner, with John Springer serenading the party—a flashback from the groom’s youth. On the wedding day, the party congregated at St. Peter’s for wedding bells at 5:30 p.m. And bells there were! After saying, “I do,” the couple exited the chapel to horns, shouts of congratulations, and an entire community celebrating in their happiness with the ringing of the church bell – as often as the bridesmaids and groomsmen chose to pull the rope! The excited young crowd boarded Amelia Island Trolley for photos by Paige Teahan ahead of an amazing reception on the black-and-white dance floor back at the Florida House Inn. The reception menu did not disappoint, with Florida Snapper, Southern Fried Chicken, Mac n’ Cheese, a host of cakes baked and decorated by the bride’s cousin, as well as a full ice cream bar. But perhaps the best “topping” for the evening was when the Fernandina Pirate Club invaded the celebration, seized and roped the bride and groom, and delivered the couple and their screaming entourage to The Palace Saloon to continue the celebration—Amelia Island-style! The next morning, loved ones enjoyed breakfast around the family-style Florida House Inn tables and laughed about all the fun from the night before. Then everyone spent the day either on the beach or in the historic downtown, with the bride and groom! Robb might’ve had Jordan at mellow, but Amelia Island has couples at “I do,” with wedding memories and love to last a lifetime. AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 19
Tesha & Andrew THE OCEAN CLUB OF AMELIA By Karen Miller
Photography by Appleseed Photography/Sun and Sea Beach Weddings
In 2007, Andrew Dalzell interviewed Tesha Byrne for a job at the Universit y of South Carolina Office of Admissions. She got the job, and she was enjoying her new career when out of the blue, her colleague, Andrew, told her that he had feelings for her. “We really liked each other a lot,” says Tesha. “And we had a lot of common interests. We both love sports, like football and bowling, and just being together.” But despite having feelings for one another, it wasn’t the time to settle down. The couple couldn’t put their finger on the reason, but they just wanted to wait. And wait they did. “We dated for ten years,” laughs Tesha. “We became engaged in Ireland on a trip with Andrew’s parents in 2012. We knew we wanted to be together forever, but the time wasn’t right just then.” Andrew attended graduate school, and he and Tesha spent long periods of time apart. In fact, they even questioned whether the marriage would happen at all. 20 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
“Sometimes a couple goes through rough patches and growing pains, and long-distance relationships can be tough,” said Tesha. “But we pulled through it, and thankfully, we were both ready to make a commitment, setting our wedding date for late last year.” At the time of the wedding planning, Andrew lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Tesha lived in South Carolina. Nonetheless, in a short two months, the couple managed to plan their beach wedding on Amelia Island. “Andrew’s parents had moved to Amelia Island, and it seemed like a beautiful spot. We hired Amanda from Sun and Sea Weddings to handle all the details, and it couldn’t have been more perfect,” says Tesha. “It was to be a very intimate wedding, with only 25 guests, and Andrew’s niece, Alexa as our flower girl. We held the ceremony on the beach in front of the Ocean Club

of Amelia, a wonderful venue owned by Ocean Club Events. Director of Events Nigel Teare helped us with the food, and every morsel was wonderful, especially the pineapple casserole!” Tesha and Andrew did something a little different on their wedding day. Instead of having an officiant stand up in front of the bride and groom, he stayed behind the guests, while Tesha and Andrew spoke their words and vows to their closest friends and family. “This meant a lot to us,” said Tesha. “It truly was our own ceremony.” The couple’s guests had already gotten to know each other the evening before at a rehearsal dinner held at Joe’s 2nd Street Bistro. The close-knit group was mesmerized by the couple’s ceremony, particularly how they included their parents in the ceremony, and the elegant simplicity with which they spoke their vows. Mary Sue and Julian Dalzell walked their son, Andrew, down the aisle, while the mother of the bride, Roxanne, was escorted by Tesha’s uncle,
Brian. Tesha was escorted by her father, Dwight. The ceremony ended with blessing stones being thrown into the ocean by all of their guests. After the wedding, everyone enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres on the patio while photos were taken, and then dove into an elegant, plated dinner created by the superlative staff. Tesha and Andrew entertained their guests with “The Shoe Game,” and everyone danced the night away with Music by Pegge, who coordinated a trio called “The Mix” to play at the wedding ceremony, and whose lead singer emceed the dancing and games. After a “sparkler send-off,” the couple and their loved ones spent the rest of the wedding weekend welcoming in the New Year! A honeymoon is in the works, but right now, Tesha and Andrew are making memories as husband and wife in their home in Cincinnati, dreaming about their next trip to Amelia Island, where they may be spending their first anniversary! Gabriela & Travis WALKER’S LANDING
By Karen Miller Photography by Dan Harris PhotoArt
When Travis McKenzie met Gabriela Castro in 2016, he was instantly smitten. He was working at Marsh Landing in Ponte Vedra Beach, and Gabriela was a wine rep for Breakthru Beverage, pouring wines at the club. He was a little shy about asking her on a date, so he requested that some of the club members put in a good word for him. “I couldn’t figure out why everyone at Marsh Landing was singing the praises of this guy named Travis,” laughs Gabriela. “But then three weeks later, we got to know each other better, and he finally had the courage to ask me on a date.” Travis took Gabriela to the Aqua Grill in Ponte Vedra Beach, plying her with gourmet food and exceptional wines. “We had so much fun, and we had many things in common,” says Gabriela. “We were right for each other on so many levels – we both love food, wine, gardening, fishing, animals, and the outdoors!” Travis proposed to Gabriela in January 2017 at Elevage Restaurant in Tampa, with her entire family present, but not before asking permission for her hand in marriage from Gabriela’s uncles, Tip Fisher and Brett Carter of Amelia Island. Gabriela had become very close to Tip and Brett when she spent three summers working at Brett’s Waterway Cafe in Fernandina Beach, the iconic restaurant owned by Brett and Tip at the downtown harbor marina. With Brett and Tip’s multitude of innovative businesses, including restaurants, catering, interior design, and finance, it was obvious they would plan and execute the wedding of Travis and Gabriela. “It was tough for Travis to hand over all the responsibility to Brett and Tip, but it was also very exciting to see what they would come up with,” says Gabriela. “We knew we wanted to hold the wedding and reception at Walkers Landing, but we literally had no idea what to expect when we walked through the doors.” A welcoming rehearsal dinner was held at Brett’s Waterway Cafe on Friday evening for close friends and family. For the wedding on Saturday, Gabriela and Travis were wowed by the transformation at Walkers Landing. “Brett and Tip set the atmosphere with elaborate candelabras, and a motif that was reminiscent of a French wine cellar. It was rustic, modern, French, elegant, new, and timeless, and something people had never 22 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
seen before,” says Gabriela. “The candelabras made the evening so intimate, romantic, and set the mood for the venue. It was everything we wanted and more, and our photographer, Dan Harris Photoart, captured the moment perfectly!” The wedding ceremony was held outdoors and officiated by James M. Tippins, Lead Chaplin at Baptist Medical Center Nassau. The couple chose not to have a wedding party, and instead, Travis walked his mother down the aisle, followed by Gabriela’s mother, and then Gabriela and her father. “We did an affirmation during the ceremony, in which our parents stood up and agreed in accordance to our union,” said Gabriela. “Then the rest of our guests stood up and also did an affirmation.” Their reception included a seated dinner with cheese and charcuterie platters, all catered by Brett’s Waterway Cafe, complete with table linens, decorations, and flowers all personally designed by Brett. “The flowers were country-chic French,” says Gabriela.
“Almost wild-like, but very elegant. Each table had different types of flowers and the bouquets were different.” Music and dancing was provided by DJ Philip Hart, Music and Photo Booths of Jacksonville, including the first dance number, “Colgando en tus Manos,” a popular Spanish love song. Their guests came from all over to attend the couple’s destination wedding, including from Redding, California, New Jersey, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, New York, El Salvador, South Florida, and Jacksonville. They stayed at The Ritz Carlton, Amelia Island, the Residence Inn Amelia Island, and other locations. A goodbye brunch on Sunday morning at Brett’s gave the couple a special send off on their honeymoon destination to Saint Lucia in the West Indies. Today, Gabriela and Travis are enjoying their married life on Jacksonville’s Southside, where they enjoy entertaining, fishing, and visiting their favorite uncles, Tip and Brett, on Amelia Island. Kailey & Declan THE GOLF CLUB OF AMELIA ISLAND By Karen Miller
Photography by Jessica VanTassel of Stout Photography
Kailey Porter met Declan Saver in Hawaii in February 2014. She had moved to Oahu in January and became friends with Declan through a blind date. He was in the Navy, and they had many things in common, like golf, the beach, football, and going out to dinner. But the couple didn’t really start dating seriously until April. By that time, they were inseparable. “Oahu is a beautiful place to fall in love,” says Kailey. “We loved the island, the people, the atmosphere, everything. We even talked about marriage from the beginning—it just seemed like the natural thing to do.” However, their romantic time in Hawaii would be shortlived. In 2016, Declan was transferred to Jacksonville, Florida, and Kailey went with him. But even after talking about marriage, Declan still managed to surprise Kailey when he asked her to marry him on the third anniversary of their first date. “We went out for a romantic dinner at The Chart House in Jacksonville, talking about our future, and suddenly, the ring 24 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
fell out of his pocket!” laughs Kailey. “It couldn’t have been more perfect!” Declan and Kailey grew to love the Jacksonville area, and they realized it was the perfect place for their wedding. “It wasn’t Hawaii, but we love it here and made many new friends,” says Kailey. “We immediately decided on The Golf Club of Amelia Island, partly because we both love golf, but mostly because it was so beautiful. We found event coordinator Katrina Moughton to be so helpful! I really wanted to plan the wedding on my own, and Katrina guided me along the way.” The couple decided on a destination wedding that would allow their 125 guests to enjoy a true vacation on Amelia Island’s pristine beaches and in charming downtown Fernandina Beach. They opened their wedding weekend with a barbecue for all their guests on Thursday night, and gathered again on Friday night at Luca’s on Centre for a small rehearsal dinner for the wedding party and close family members. After dinner, the rest of their guests
arrived at Luca’s for a “Welcome to Amelia Island” cocktail and a scrumptious cake from Bliss Cakery. Since the wedding wasn’t until Saturday evening, the couple’s guests had the day for golfing, walking the beach, and visiting the downtown shops. At 5:15 p.m., Kailey and Declan held their ceremony on the manicured fairways of The Golf Club of Amelia Island, with their long-time Hawaiian friend, Dan Gallant, officiating. Local musician Richard Stratton performed music for the wedding and the cocktail hour, then the food stations were opened for dinner. “We had all our favorite foods, and everything was delicious!” exclaims Kailey. “Shrimp and grits, braised pork, haricots verts, potatoes, and of course, Bliss’s amazing cupcakes!” Kailey and Declan hired a DJ to dance the night away, and they surprised their guests with a choreographed dance. “We took dance lessons, and it was so much fun to perform our dance number,” says Kailey. “It was a mashup of ‘Beyond the Sea’ and “Only Wanna Be with You.’ We had such a great time!” The couple booked rooms for their guests at The Residence Inn, Amelia Island, where Kailey and her bridal party got ready for the big event. A shuttle was provided by Vic Garvin of Amelia Airport Shuttle and Transportation to get everyone to the wedding on time, and then safely back to their hotels. Kailey and Declan put off their honeymoon for a little while, and ended up taking a whirlwind trip to Paris and Barcelona at the end of May, where they fell in love all over again. Today, this happy couple lives in Jacksonville, where Declan is still in the Navy, and Kailey works for the Nassau County Department of Planning and Economic Opportunity. AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 25

The Barn at Cottonwood Ranch By Karen Miller
Photographs courtesy of The Barn at Cottonwood Ranch
Karen and Larry Brantley purchased their Callahan ranch in 2011, situated on 760 sprawling acres of beautiful pastures, ancient hardwoods, and multiple freshwater ponds. Their intention was to raise cattle and grow crops, in fact, Cottonwood Ranch grew their herd to 500 head of Angus cattle. “But we needed a barn,” says Karen. “Our original intention was to build the Barn for our personal use, but when Larry’s 6th grade teacher, Mrs. Carole Higginbotham, who holds a special place in Larry’s heart, asked if we could host a 50th wedding anniversary party for her and Mr. Higginbotham at the Barn, he wanted to make it spectacular. “My husband Larry can do anything, and build anything. He built the Barn with his own two hands, crafted with lumber 28 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
from our land. He even bought his own sawmill! It turned out so beautifully that we decided to become an event venue for others to enjoy.” The Barn became a work of art; it took a year to build, and was completed in March of this year. The couple’s intention was to use the Barn as a venue for weddings, anniversaries, and other special events, and the location doesn’t get any better than Cottonwood Ranch. “Our property is stunning and serene,” said Karen. “The lush pastures and secluded nature of the ranch create the perfect ambiance for any event.” Boasting large windows, a grand front porch, and covered side porches, the Barn was designed with space and accommodation in mind. Featuring heavy timber construction, high cathedral ceilings, and ample
room for 299 guests, a wedding at Cottonwood Ranch is an unforgettable experience. The Barn is fully air conditioned and heated, so you can hold your event here any time of the year. We have a bridal lounge and groom’s lounge with private bathrooms, so there’s plenty of room to get ready for the wedding,” said Karen. “There’s a lovely pond and large live oak tree outside, which makes for a beautiful wedding ceremony. The large front porch is also an option - in fact there are so many options to utilize both the inside of the Barn and its surrounding property.” Beyond the grandeur of the main hall, the Barn includes exclusive amenities like a downstairs bar, commercial catering kitchen, and large gas fire pit. “85 percent of the materials used to build the Barn came from our own land,” said Karen. “We strived to make every detail perfect, from hand-hewn cypress, to a repurposed syrup kettle fire pit, and even railings from a 19th century bank. My husband is an amazing craftsman - he put his heart and soul into the Barn.”
“There are no noise worries at the Barn,” says Karen. “Because of the secluded setting of the ranch, guests can feel free to dance, sing, play music, and have a great time - there are no nearby neighbors to bother! The Barn is accessible to everyone with wide, paved paths, low thresholds, and ADA compliant restrooms. All main gathering spaces are located on the ground level so everyone can enjoy the Barn.” The Barn at Cottonwood Ranch has become a family affair, with Karen’s parents, Melvin and Norma Fouraker, her aunt and uncle, Beverly and George Fencik, and son, Easton helping out with the events. Her best friend, Jane Moore, is their events manager. “The Barn is a labor of love for all of us,” says Karen. “We want our guests to feel at home, and appreciate the beauty of the ranch as much as we do!” The Barn at Cottonwood Ranch is located at 452039 Old Dixie Highway in Callahan. new trends in jewelry By Karen Miller with Drew Scott Today’s bride is savvy, and when it comes to jewelry trends, fashionistas from around the globe are saying, “Anything goes!” when choosing an engagement ring, wedding ring, and bridal jewelry. Many traditional stones and settings are still in the mix, but today’s bride is looking for unusual shapes, colorful stones, and unique settings. “The halo diamond is still a popular style, with smaller diamonds encircling a larger center stone,” says Drew Scott, owner of Scott & Sons Fine Jewelry. “But we’re definitely seeing a shift in shapes, with more oval, round, and pear-shaped stones; the princess cut a little less.” Scott says that brides and grooms are doing their research when it comes to the 4 C’s of diamonds: color, cut, clarity, and carat. Sometimes a family diamond will be provided, usually from the groom’s family, and the couple will choose a design to work the heirloom stone into a modern setting. “This is a way that couples can pay homage to their family, and save a little money at the same time.” 30 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
Brides often give their bridesmaids jewelry gifts that they can wear for the wedding, and Scott is seeing a strong trend towards Marahlago Larimar jewelry. Larimar is a rare Caribbean gemstone with a unique blue color. “Because of our locale, many brides and bridesmaids are leaning toward this distinctive gemstone jewelry, with its ‘ocean-y’ color and unique designs,” says Scott. “We find that the younger generation has less desire to go with old fashioned traditions. They want to make their own decisions.” But for traditional gifts for bridesmaids and groomsmen, Scott still sells items like knives, men’s jewelry, and pearl sets. And for the mother of the bride who really wants to shine, Scott will help her choose pieces suitable for her own personal taste. For wedding bands, couples want their own ring styles, and rarely do brides and grooms choose matching rings. “There’s a company we do business with called Lashbrook Designs that produces men’s wedding rings from unique metals,” says Scott. “And mixing metals is very trendy right now. It’s okay to pair gold with stainless steel, and yellow gold with rose gold. Sometimes a couple will come into the store and have their heart set on a certain color, and then change their minds when they try on different bands.” Another trend that Scott enjoys is layering necklaces of various sizes and styles. “There are some beautiful pieces that make a statement, both for brides and bridesmaids.” Alex Henriquez is Scott & Sons’ in-house jeweler, who, with over 30 years of experience, designs rings and other pieces by hand, using the “lost wax method.” “Many couples want a one-of-akind design, and Alex can create that for them,” says Scott. “The wax is hand-carved, and Alex can even set a stone into the wax so the bride can try on her ring and get a real idea of what it’s going to look like before the ring is cast.” “One of the things people like about our store is our friendly atmosphere,” says Scott. “We carry one of the largest bridal selections of in-stock merchandise in northeast Florida. Our vast inventory includes the ever-popular halo and solitaire styles, or you can select a loose diamond to be placed in one of our semi-mount settings. We have wedding jewelry for every budget!” For more information or to make an appointment with Drew, call (904) 4911550 or visit www.scottandsons.com.

royal on the runway Some of the hottest trends on the runway this season reflect this year’s royal wedding, while other options like suits, bows, feathers and flowers continue to make waves. By Julie Simmons “There’s power, power in love. If you don’t believe me, think about a time when you first fell in love. The whole world seemed to center around you and your beloved,” said Rev. Michael Curry at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle last May at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle. As we explore this season’s new wedding fashion trends, we have to give a nod to the recent royal wedding, since royal has taken over the runways! It has been suggested that the recent royal wedding had a greater impact on bridal fashion than even the Kate Middleton lace gown, which dominated bridal fashion for years. What does the new fashion look like? Perhaps fancy is the best word. Glitter tiaras, “stately” style, delicate beadwork, and crystals were all components of an emerging trend even before Meghan appeared in Queen Elizabeth’s diamond bandeau tiara. 32 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
If regal isn’t your favorite look, have no fear; designers are churning out loads of options, and the first is right in line with Meghan’s choice of a clean and simple gown. Clean lines with simple tailoring are everywhere in gowns of all styles—ball gowns, mermaid, A-line, and even the 90’s slip dress. Like Meghan, brides are dressing up these modest gowns with floral head pieces, tiaras, and in the royal wedding case, a 16-plus foot veil, which is setting the stage for very long trains to blanket the aisles this season and in the year to come. As women are empowering themselves in every sphere of life, they are illustrating their new-found assertiveness on their big day with wedding suits and jumpsuits. Some of these come in the form of a suit, but don’t think stuffy, because these suits are sheer, sleek, and sexy. The jumpsuits arrive in an array of options, note

This strapless silk ball gown from Vera Wang is a sister to the Wang gown shown earlier with its multi-layered crinkle tulle skirt, accented by a hand draped tulle overlay. The bougainvillea colored faille flowers make a strong statement.

many designers, including in pure lace, or with ruffled sleeves, trains, dresses over pants, or in two-tone color. Speaking of color, the last few seasons we’ve seen even black emerge, but today, think royally! It’s no surprise that Ultra Violet is the Pantone color of 2018. Naturally, this color is finding its way into wedding fashion and décor in every shade of lavender. Metallics are also still a big hit, with gold and silver adding sparkle to the runway. Bows, feathers, and flowers have been hot for a couple of years now, but designers continue to surprise with new presentations each season. Bows are appearing in every realm of bridal fashion, especially as huge add-ons on the front of the gown rather than just the back. Wildflowers are also blooming as a trend, as well as bold blossoms— even in 3-D applique. Feathers are flying with theatrical style, note some bridal publications, although they are no longer just accessories or accents but sometimes cover the entire gown. In line with a flair for the theatrical, making a strong statement is definitely a thing in the latest wedding fashion, with some gowns feeling closer to costumes. A strong statement itself is the mock turtleneck for the gown’s neckline. The turtleneck arrives very sleek, sheer, with fullon lace, or even beaded. On Amelia Island, we love the ocean, and we are excited about the underwater elements emerging in gowns this year, with seashell fan tops, iridescent colors, coral-inspired beading, and wave-like pleating making their way into bridal fashion. As you begin to think about your wedding day, remember the words of Rev. Curry—there is power in love! Don’t forget your beloved and the power the two of you have when you work together. From Amelia Island Weddings Magazine, congratulations to both of you, and may your day be laced with royal beauty!

unplugged ceremonies By Lisa Presnell, PWC We live in an era full of technology, where we no longer enjoy the moment, but instead have begun to document the moment. We view our lives through a small screen, and it seems like the only memories we have are accessed through our social media pages. Photographers, Wedding Planners, Officiants and the wedding couples themselves have all become annoyed with phone-obsessed, photo-hungry, snaphappy guests who won’t stay seated or remain still during the wedding ceremony. Guests are ruining the wedding photos by blocking the professional photographer or distracting the couple. It’s problem that needs to stop! Here’s the issue: couples pay a substantial amount to have a professional photograph their big day. Photographers cannot do their best work when guests are in the way. Officiants stumble through their vows when they are distracted by guests moving around or flashing their cameras like paparazzi. Or, when the couple turns to see the 36 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
expressions on their guests’ faces, they are blocked by screens staring back at them. It’s extremely intrusive when the officiant wants to begin a heartfelt speech, or the couple are sharing their vows, to have guests reaching over their heads or standing up and moving around in front of the photographer, all to get that perfect shot from their cell phone. The first look, the walk down the aisle, the kiss… those are special, hopefully oncein-a-lifetime moments, and there are no do-overs. The bride doesn’t want to see all of these devices snapping and flashing at her as she walks down the aisle; she wants to see her groom waiting at the altar. She wants to see the look on his face as he sees her for the first time in her wedding dress. She wants to embrace that moment without interference, and so does he. When guests are constantly in motion to get a picture, blocking the photographer and distracting the officiant, it really affects the experience and the end result for the couple. When there are cameras out or phones in hands, guests aren’t actually present, and no matter what angle the photographer tries to get, someone will be in the way, photo bombing each shot. The solution? An unplugged ceremony. Couples are beginning to make custom signs expressing their wishes and asking the officiant to explain their request that all cell phones, devices, and cameras be put away so the professionals can do their jobs without interruption. We couldn’t agree more. The guests most likely won’t be happy about it and may even be resistant, but the ceremony is not about them and they will get over it. Guests are privileged to be there. It’s about the bride and groom. It’s about the couple inviting their guests to share in a very intimate and special time in their lives, to embrace it and hear the words that are expressed to one another during their wedding ceremony. When you accept an invitation to someone’s wedding, don’t be a distraction. You are a guest. Be grateful to be there. Please sit down, unplug, be present, and enjoy the wedding!

flowers & décor By Julie Simmons “We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to Pantone 1-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level. From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, speaking of the 2018 color of the year. Artistic and creative expression, and spiritual reflection, are key levers in orchestrating your special wedding day, so this season, how about trying a little ultra violet? All forms of purple, lavender, and violet, along with metallics of champagne, silver, and gold, are prevalent in wedding décor this season, perhaps in alignment with this year’s big royal wedding in May. Ultraviolet gracefully blends with another prominent trend—bringing nature in! For a few 38 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
seasons, brides’ floral focus hasn’t been on flowers at all, but rather on garden and greenery. The trend is growing greener each season, with vegetation covering the rooftop, dangling from existing lighting, and even walls of greenery serving as backdrops for the altar, the bar, or to display photos or place cards. Texture is everything. Brides are choosing a variety of foliage, even berries and fruit, for their fall and winter nuptials. But flowers are never out of style! Bridal fashion focusing on large blossoms and wildflowers is everywhere this season. On the décor side, echoing the hip nature of succulents in home décor, brides are also bringing them into their special day, with appreciation for their durable nature. Succulents, and even cacti, are beautiful in bowls and pots, on cakes, boutonnieres, and bouquets, suggest many wedding designers this year. While succulents are more of a year-round choice, it’s sound advice to stick with flowers that are in season. This decision promises availability and a better price. A simple internet search will guide you to a list of in-season choices. For this fall, dahlias are hot because of their vast variety of colors. If you wish to assert your creativity, try out video mapping. This technology can transform your venue into anything you wish, like a castle, stage, or theater. The possibilities for color and design projection are endless! Speaking of venues, tents continue to trend, and this season, clear tents are in. Imagine how a few elegant lights will sparkle like stars in a clear tent, or consider drapes from your dormers with greenery and chandeliers. Stunning! For a touch of elegance, it doesn’t get more royal than a monogram! Did you know that the fancy royal letters on seals and such are called ciphers? A proper monogram requires more than one letter intertwined, although today the terms are used interchangeably. Whatever you call it, personalized embroidery is what it’s all about, whether on the veil, on something blue, on a hankie, ring pillow, the altar, a sign, napkins, chair decals, koozies – even the wedding cake. Use a little artistic ingenuity and put a mammogram on whatever you like! And don’t be afraid to mix things up a little! Brides have been mix-matching their bridesmaids quite a bit lately, but new this season is a mixmatched line of groomsmen. Perhaps it’s the boutonnieres, the ties, the tailoring of the suit, or various mis-matched coloring and patterns – maybe even with a little ultra violet! Finally, Meghan and Harry issued a few Royal Wedding rules, providing a bit off a roadmap for weddings today. On the list—unplug for the ceremony! That’s right: put away the phones, focus on the couple, and dial-in on your beloved. Nothing is more artistic, creative, or spiritual than that. From Amelia Island Weddings Magazine, may Ultra Violet light the way to many happy years together!

ON AMELIA ISLAND
By Karen Miller Amelia Island has been consistently named one of the top destination islands in the U.S., and recently one of the Top 10 Islands in Travel + Leisure’s 2018 World’s Best Awards! Amelia finished in the #6 spot, making it the highest-rated Florida island in the publication’s annual competition. That doesn’t surprise us Amelia Islanders, because those of us who live, work, and play on Amelia know how easy it is to fall in love with this beautiful barrier island, rich in breathtaking beauty and vibrant history. Because of Amelia Island’s unspoiled environment, it’s the perfect place for honeymooning couples. There are activities galore on Amelia, but plenty of time and space for newlyweds to be alone. With its ancient live oak trees dripping with Spanish moss, its pristine beaches, and saltwater marshes teeming with birds and wildlife, you’ll find the perfect balance of romance and splendor on this island paradise. Amelia Island abounds with world-class bedand-breakfast inns, exclusive restaurants, and championship golf courses. If you love the outdoors, Amelia Island has lots to offer, from fishing and 42 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
kayaking to surfing and biking. If relaxation is your preference, there are numerous places to enjoy spa treatments, yoga, music, art, and even theatre. Many couples who honeymoon on Amelia Island come back year after year, once they realize that their vacation of a lifetime is accessible whenever they need a romantic getaway! If you’re looking to spend your honeymoon in a coastal paradise with authentic natural beauty and lots of fun recreational activities, Amelia Island welcomes you with open arms! In the center of Fernandina Beach, The Fairbanks House has been recognized as one of the most beautiful bed and breakfast inns in the country. Recently named the “Best Place to Elope” by WhereToElope.com, the inn boasts striking Italianate architecture, along with rooms that are charming and comfortable, many with Jacuzzis and private porches. Innkeeper and owner Theresa Hamilton provides wine and chocolate-covered strawberries upon your arrival, as well as spa robes, upscale amenities, and free WiFi in the rooms. “We cater to romance,” says Hamilton. “We are all about quiet, romantic getaways, and we can accommodate every need.” Several of the oversized rooms even have small kitchens and all rooms have coffee makers. A two-course breakfast, complimentary use of bikes, a pool and beach equipment, along with evening beverages and hors d’oeuvres, round out the carefree pampering that couples will remember for a lifetime. Equally charming is The Amelia Island Williams House, a beautifully restored Victorian mansion on a quiet street close to the town center. This award-winning inn features charming spacious guest rooms with working fireplaces, baths with whirlpool tubs for two, elegant bedding, and all of the amenities you need for an atmosphere for romance and relaxation. Their honeymoon packages feature chocolate-dipped strawberries, dinners for two, and romantic horse-drawn carriage rides through the quaint seaside town. A three course gourmet breakfast is served each morning in the dining room, plus complimentary beverages and snacks are available all day, as well as bikes, beach towels, and guest chairs for relaxing on the beach. Innkeepers Chris and Maria Page invite you to sit on their wide verandahs underneath live oak trees dripping with Spanish moss while you “wine” down the day, and enjoy views of their serene gardens, fountains, and koi pond.
