As the publishers of Amelia Island Weddings, it gives us great pleasure each year in the fall and spring to present one of the most important occasions in anyone’s life: their wedding. We are always so pleased to spotlight in each of these issues some of the terrific couples who have begun their lives together here on Amelia Island. These uplifting stories of love are always inspiring. It is not an overstatement to say that in the last decade Amelia Island has become one of the top destinations wedding spots in the Southeast, and perhaps even in the entire country. As we have been publishing this magazine in the last dozen years or so, Amelia Island has attracted a great number of destination weddings by couples looking to celebrate an unforgettable wedding weekend with their family and friends. With its historic churches, stunning natural beauty, and a wide variety of outstanding venues, it’s not hard to see why our gorgeous island paradise has become so popular. But, while Amelia Island’s popularity as a destination wedding hotspot has grown, we have also taken great satisfaction in featuring a number of Amelia Island families who have celebrated their child’s wedding here at home. Not all great loves are love at first sight. When Caroline and Brandon first met through mutual friends in July 2009, they didn’t know they’d met their soul mates. “I wasn’t interested. However, three years later, I sent him a friend request on Facebook,” Caroline laughs. “A friend of mine at the time was interested in someone who was a friend of Brandon. I was not expecting that friend request to turn into anything. But I was surprised when it led to good conversation.” Those conversations continued, and soon they turned into something else. The couple started dating. I asked Caroline how 14 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
long they dated before he asked her to marry him. “We dated for seven years and brought two beautiful humans into the world before Brandon proposed. “It was May 31, 2019, the day of his graduation from the electrical apprenticeship in Jacksonville. On the way to the graduation party after the ceremony, Brandon stopped at the local boardwalk. I can’t remember the words, but I will never forget the feeling I felt when he dropped down on one knee. I was ecstatic, jumping up and down, and I almost broke my high heel! I was finally getting to marry my guy. He was the one I prayed so hard for.”
The original plans were set for an August wedding the following year, but the couple started the process of purchasing a house. All their time and energy went towards settling their family into their first home, and plans for the wedding were pushed off. “We changed the date to January 2021. But then, of course, Covid hit. I was nervous, so we pushed it up again. I settled for a date in May this year, the day before our engagement anniversary. It just felt right settling on that date,” says Caroline. “It took us about two years to get the job done, but we got it done!” “I definitely want to give all my thanks and love to Mrs. Angie Martino, my lovely wedding planner, and to everyone at The Ribault Club. She and the venue really brought my wedding ideas to life. Our wonderful photographer Evan Hampton Photography did an amazing job. a superb job with all the flower arrangements. And, of course, we want to thank Luxe Party Rentals.” “Caroline and Brandon showed love and harmony from our first meeting, when they arrived with their two beautiful children, Brandon Jr. and Bella. We talked like we’d known each other for a long time. The planning was fun, stress-free, and their wedding turned out as special as they are. “There were emotional moments since Caroline’s Dad couldn’t be present that day, but their kindness and spark made the planning easy, and their guests were very happy! The photographs tell of their happy wedding day! It is hard for me to say goodbye at send-off when I see a beautiful couple like this one depart,” says Angie Martino, the Ribault Club’s wedding planner. 16 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
What was Mrs. Blake’s favorite part of her special day? “Walking down to my husband while replaying the events in my head that led us here to becoming one, just seeing the look of pure joy on his face and being surrounded by the love from our families. And finally becoming Mrs. Blake. One of the best days of my life that I will never forget.” The newlyweds decided to wait on taking a honeymoon, planning to take a honeymoon on their first-year anniversary. If travel restrictions permit, they will celebrate both happy occasions in the Maldives. “Right now, our plans for the future are to continue to keep God first ahead of all our endeavors, while building a solid foundation for our family. And to live, laugh, and love as much as we can.” AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 17
Meghan & Sebastian FLORIDA HOUSE INN By Mandy Haynes Photography by Corner House Photography Meghan and Sebastian Miller met completely by chance, but it only took one date to know they were meant for each other. “Sebastian is from Romania, and the Romanian company he was working for was hired by Westrock. We just happened to connect online and decided to go on a date. After that first date, we were inseparable. Everyone warned me not to get too attached because he would be leaving in a few months. I had convinced myself we could keep things casual, but when he left to go back home, we were both heartbroken,” says Meghan. After a few weeks apart, Sebastian invited Meghan to go to Romania to visit him and meet his family. Unbeknownst to Meghan, Sebastian had asked her parents for permission to propose to their daughter. After two weeks of showing Meghan the sites in Romania and introducing her to his family, Sebastian proposed. “The two of us were sitting in his kitchen, just enjoying a cup of coffee and each other’s company, when he grabbed a ring box out of a box on the windowsill. He opened it and asked, ‘You want?’ I chuckled and asked, ‘Do I want to marry you?’ He said, ‘Yes sorry, I’ve never done this before.’ Neither had I!” laughs Meghan at the memory. “We laughed, hugged, kissed, and then I showed his family my ring.” Due to pandemic obstacles, which also made getting Sebastian’s parents here on a visa more difficult, the couple rescheduled their wedding plans three times. But that didn’t damper their spirits. If anything, it gave them more stories to tell in the future. “This was actually our second wedding! Sebi came here on a K-1 visa, and we had 90 days to get married. We wanted Sebi’s family to be with us for the big event, but the visa process takes time,” says Meghan. The couple came up with the perfect solution. “We had a quick service with a small group of friends, family, and Pirate Punch at the Palace Saloon,” laughs Meghan. “When I moved here, the Green Turtle became one of my favorite places to listen to live music and people watch. And I’ve witnessed lots of weddings at the Florida House Inn. That beautiful, almost Secret Garden-esque courtyard! The mermaid fountain, twinkle lights, and the pergola were just what I wanted. 18 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
I knew for years it was the place for my wedding, I just had to wait to meet Sebastian.” The bride contacted Megan Chism with Saltmarsh Hospitality Group and together they started planning her dream wedding. When Sebastian’s parents’ visas were approved, the couple took a trip together to Romania to bring them to Fernandina Beach to meet Meghan’s family and celebrate their wedding. “It was an honor for Details Event Design to help Meghan and Sebastian realize their long-awaited dream of a beautiful Florida House Inn wedding and reception. The team at Saltmarsh Hospitality did a phenomenal job with the food and service, and Island Flower and Garden created stunning autumn floral arrangements. The weather was absolutely beautiful, and the guests all enjoyed dancing the night away to music provided by A1 Majestic Sound. Meg and Sebi are the sweetest couple, and I wish them every happiness!” says Natalie Voytac, owner of Details Event Design. “It was very hard for Sebastian at our first wedding to not have anyone from his home here with him. Seeing Sebi dance with his mom was a beautiful moment, it was worth waiting for. We may have had to reschedule three times, but in the end, our wedding day was perfect.” And this time, Meghan got to share her favorite places on Amelia Island with his Sebastian’s family. Most of the wedding party made their way to the Green Turtle after the reception and continued the after-party there, and several members booked rooms at the Florida House Inn. With their wedding day behind them, the newlyweds are busy completing renovations on their house, and they look forward to starting a family when the time is right. AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 19

Three blind mice, three little pigs, three stooges, three wisemen, three chipmunks, three amigos, and third time’s the charm! Great things come in threes, it seems, and newlyweds Emily and Devin Mooneyhan will be the first to tell you that their three-times rescheduled wedding turned out to be just perfect. “I am from Michigan, Devin is from Florida, and we met in San Francisco,” Emily Swift Monneyhan explains. “When it came time to pick a wedding location, we finally narrowed it down to Michigan or Florida.” Devin adds that Amelia Island won out for its amazing reviews, location near a major airport for the ease of travel, and of course, its incredible wedding venues and natural beauty. “When we saw the photos of weddings at Oyster Bay Yacht Club, we knew this was it,” shares Emily. 20 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
“Oyster Bay provides a stunning environment for a wedding event,” says Wedding and Events Manager Ashton Hunter. “The marshview ceremony location is set among cascading canopy oaks draped in Spanish moss, providing the perfect backdrop for the place to say your ‘I do’s!’ And in keeping with the rustic beauty of its surroundings, the clubhouse has a casual yet elegant ambience.” Emily and Devin had to push off their wedding ceremony twice due to Covid-19 concerns. In September 2020, the couple decided to make the trip to Amelia Island despite the pandemic, and they exchanged vows in front of a small, intimate gathering. Then, almost to the day one year later, they gathered on the front lawn of Oyster Bay Yacht Club and said “I do” one more time in a celebration filled with family and friends.
“We are so glad we went forward with the full shebang,” they reflect. “It felt like it was the only time we said, ‘I do,’ and to be surrounded by the love and support of our family and friends is a feeling we will forever remember.” While the nuptials at Oyster Bay were the centerpiece of their wedding, the couple and their friends enjoyed many days before and after the wedding exploring this quaint Florida barrier island. “We came in the Wednesday before the wedding and rented an oceanfront home. It really doesn’t get any better than this, especially when you love to surf and there are good waves,” says Devin, who spent hours on those breakers with his best buds. Meanwhile, Emily and her friends were getting their hair and makeup done at The Beauty Bar, nail polish and pampering at Magna’s Aveda Full Body Salon, and all were relishing historic downtown Fernandina with its outstanding dining and shopping.
When it was time for the wedding bells to chime, Emily carried a bouquet designed by Island Flower & Garden, and the couple was all smiles as Day Eight Studios captured the memories. Oyster Bay served guests bruschetta, chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, and the couple’s favorite: stuffed mushrooms. The crowd danced and celebrated to the tunes of DJ Will Deaton before enjoying a layered chocolate-and-vanilla cake with raspberry filling. Just a few weeks into their marriage, Emily, Devin, and their favorite dog, Wiley, live in Houston, Texas, where they are dreaming of another trip to Amelia Island to dine at Café Karibo, shop at Color it Green, or bike the Egan’s Creek Greenway again. Maybe it’s the ocean, or the abundant canopies of oaks, or quite possibly the quaint downtown that hooked Alessandra Banno on Amelia Island. Like so many of you, once she found Amelia Island in 1998, it became more home than her Peoria, Illinois hometown. “As soon as we found Amelia, it was where my family spent summers, holidays, and special occasions,” says Alessandra. “And as quick as I could bring Andrew to Amelia Island, I did!” Alessandra met Andrew Bonanno at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in her sophomore year and his senior year. “We’ve been inseparable ever since,” the couple laughs, reminiscing on their lives together in Ohio, Colorado, California, and today, back in Ohio. And many visits to Amelia in-between, the first of which 22 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
hooked Andrew, too! So much so that he stopped by Robison Jewelers on one visit and picked out a promise ring of opal and diamonds for Alessandra, asking her to promise to marry him one day here on the island. As testament to their love, Alessandra’s mother, Tamilyn Banno, shared that at the end of Alessandra’s junior year of college, she suffered an abdominal tumor that threatened her life and the possibility of having children. Demonstrating his complete love, Andrew, who’d buried his father just a few months before, resigned from his job and moved to be by Alessandra’s side as she recovered. In 2019, Andrew made his commitment permanent when he proposed at Lover’s Cove on Catalina Island. “And, of course, we soon visited Amelia to pick out a venue,” they smile. When Alessandra showed Andrew Walker’s Landing
for the first time, she didn’t even have to ask. With its expansive views of the marsh, the majestic oaks, and the beautiful setting, they immediately reserved a date in May of this year for their big day. A highlight of the wedding week was Alessandra’s bachelorette party, where the ladies rode Amelia Island’s extensive bike trails, enjoyed lunch at Marche Burette, and let the gentlemen crash their party for some fun at The Palace Saloon. Guests came from around the country to celebrate the couple, with the center of the action was at the Omni Amelia Island Resort. “Everyone loved the hotel, and especially the time spent together poolside and on the beach.” On wedding day, the bridal party sipped champagne while Kristi Arketti applied makeup, The Beauty Bar perfected the ladies’ hair, and photographer Brittany Powell captured the special moments. When the bride was ready, she visited her dad for a first look, where her mom surprised her with a white Rolls Royce to deliver her to the first look for her groom. The couple said “I do” with their Toy Australian Shepherd, Roscoe, by their sides and Alessandra’s dad officiating. “This was all Andrew’s idea to ask dad!” Alessandra explains. “Dad was actually pretty sick with COVID-19 a few months before the wedding, and this was one more way we celebrated his wellness and our family.” Island Sounds DJ Morgan Crean kept everyone hopping at the reception, and the couple surprised the crowd with some newly acquired dance moves. Catering by Liz presented several food stations, Nana Teresa’s Bake Shop prepared a cake with cannoli filling as a nod to the couple’s Italian heritage, and Andrew’s family’s excellent BonAnno wine was enjoyed by all! The Bonannos are settling nicely into married life, with Andrew serving as CFO for a small Ohio company and Alessandra studying to become a physician’s assistant. Everyday you can find this couple up early practicing yoga, hiking on the weekends, and most of all, loving their new life together. AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 23

No matter where you call home, Amelia Island’s blue waters, expanse of lush marsh grass, and canopies of oaks are amazing backdrops for saying, “I do!” Local brides know all the secrets and relish planning their wedding celebration, but for brides planning from afar, it can be a little unnerving to be so far removed from everything. At least until you meet Todd Smith, explains newlywed Kelly Rumph. “Todd has a contagious personality and he’s phenomenal at what he does,” says Kelly. “Planning from a distance isn’t easy, but he is warm, welcoming, and you trust him easily.” Smith, owner of Amelia Island Beach Weddings and planner for the couple’s wedding events, remembers meeting Kelly and Tommy. “The first time we talked, I fell in love with this sweet couple. The most important thing for them was just to get 24 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
married. They didn’t care about the details, they just wanted to start their life together.” Kelly and Tommy first met in high school. “Tommy and I actually met in ninth grade at Albany High School in Georgia, but I was so bubbly I drove him crazy,” Kelly laughs. “In 2018, literally decades, spouses, children, and ex-spouses later, we met again and rekindled our friendship.” It didn’t take too long for a fire to ignite between the two, placing Tommy down on one knee and asking Kelly for her hand. “When you’ve already been married once and pleased everyone, the second go around you do what you really want,” laughs Kelly, with her great sense of humor. “And I wanted to get married on the beach!” Although Kelly grew up vacationing on Florida’s Gulf Coast,
the couple had heard great things about Amelia Island. “Finally, we visited, and of course, we fell in love with the island and enjoyed several stays at the Omni Amelia Island Resort, enjoying the local restaurants, a Jaguars game, and hours at the beach.” When it came time to pick a wedding destination, Amelia Island was naturally at the top of their list. Todd steered the couple to the Courtyard by Marriott Amelia Island. “It wasn’t even finished yet when we booked it, and it was the best decision. The Courtyard team was incredible, the atmosphere perfect, and the pool where the children spent hours was the cherry on top! Courtyard did everything they could to make our wedding beautiful!” Between Todd and the Courtyard team, everything came together perfectly—despite the rain. In early June this year, everyone on Amelia Island was grateful for a little rain after a short
drought. “But not me!” says Kelly. “We were working on backup plans, Courtyard was helping to prepare a makeshift chapel, but then the skies cleared.” Right at sunset, the party rushed to Main Beach, where the passing rain cooled the air and an array of beautiful colors filled the sky, providing a gorgeous start to the Rumphs new life together. Following the ceremony, the group enjoyed a Southern Coastal dinner at the Courtyard Marriott that included ribs, shrimp and grits, potato salad, and on Todd’s advice in lieu of a traditional wedding cake, local favorite Ms. Carolyn’s Italian Cream, Chocolate, and Coconut cakes, which Kelly agrees are “amazing.” “We are proud of every detail of the celebration,” says Kelly. “The time we had as a family on Amelia Island, the beautiful ceremony and reception, but most of all visiting Amelia Island again. We relive the day in our hearts and cherished memories often.” AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 25

Almost 100 years ago, a lavish resort called the Ribault Club served as a playground for affluent industrialists of the day. Designed by the famous Swiss architect Maurice Fatio, the 16,000-square-foot clubhouse hosted memorable parties and events throughout the late 1920s and ‘30s. Tucked away on 100 acres of pristine property just south of Amelia on Fort George Island, the Ribault Club lay barren and desolate for many years until a group of concerned citizens formed a committee to save the once-thriving structure and its many charms. With funding from the state and national parks, and the City of Jacksonville, the Ribault Club was fully restored in the 1990s. Since then, the Ribault Club has hosted countless weddings, with the help of an experienced staff headed by General Manager Marie Thompson. An enthusiastic individual with years of experience, Thompson treats all of the brides and grooms as if they were her own family. 28 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
“There are so many reasons to host a wedding at the Ribault Club,” says Thompson. “The beautiful location, the historic building and our team of experienced professionals are here to help make your dream wedding come true. finding the perfect ring By Karen Miller with Drew Scott Before the wedding planning begins, before you say “yes” to his proposal, the perfect engagement ring is waiting for you. But how does a gentleman know what style of ring to choose for his beloved? With a flair for design and years of experience assisting brides and grooms with their jewelry choices, Drew Scott from Scott & Sons Fine Jewelry says the search for the perfect ring begins with the groom himself. “Usually, a man will come into the store and look at rings, asking questions about styles and prices,” says Scott. “He’s not sure what he wants, so we help him identify the style of jewelry his potential fiancé wears now. After he has time to think about his options, the groom-to-be will return with a sister-in-law, mother of the bride, or a close friend of the bride, to help make the final decision.” “The halo diamond, above all, has been the most popular engagement ring for some time,” says Scott. “A halo style is a ring with smaller diamonds encircling the center stone. usually a diamond, and today we’re seeing oval, along with round diamonds, for the center. Interestingly, our brides are going for more traditional styles, and choosing yellow gold.” Scott notes that brides and grooms are doing their research when it comes to the 4-Cs of diamonds: color, cut, clarity, and carat. “One-carat diamonds are what most couples are looking for,” says Scott. “And they’re looking for clear diamonds on the spectrum, from the colorless to the nearcolorless range.” Sometimes a family diamond will be provided, usually from the potential groom’s family, and the couple will choose a design to work the heirloom stone into a modern setting. “This way, the couple can pay homage to their family, and save a little money at the same time.” For wedding bands, couples want their own ring styles, and rarely do brides and grooms choose matching rings. “There’s a company we do business with called Lashbrook Designs, which produces men’s wedding rings from unique metals,” says Scott. “Titanium, cobalt chrome, and meteorite are some of their most popular offerings. Mixing yellow gold or rose gold with other materials is a popular trend.” A few brides like to give their bridesmaids jewelry gifts that they can wear for the wedding, but Scott is seeing less of this. “We find that the younger generation has less desire to go with oldfashioned traditions. They want to make their own decisions, and even the wedding party wants to show off their own individual styles. But for brides and bridesmaids alike, sophisticated drop earrings are very popular now.” Traditional gifts for bridesmaids and groomsmen include items like knives, men’s jewelry, and pearl sets. And for the mother of the bride who really wants to sparkle, Scott will help her choose pieces suitable for her own personal taste. Laser-cut tulle appliqués embellished with stunning hand-beaded embroidery adorn the bodice and bishop sleeves before continuing down to an unforgettable cutout cathedral-length train. The style is finished with buttons cascading down the illusion back. This style is also available with a raised neckline option.

Coming back to sleeves, they are here, and in a plethora of options. In seasons of late, we’ve seen abundant capes. This season, they’re shifting to very sheer, flowing, and minimalist styles. Think about strands of fabric attached to the shoulder and left to flow. It’s organic, striking, and beautiful. If you prefer a more established design, the statement boleros on the runways might be for you. Whether sheer, embroidered, sequined, or opaque, the options are all on the table to add to your gown. And finally, don’t overlook bell sleeves – formal or cute, they are always a winner! When it comes to “adding to your gown,” many of the trends this season find perfection when combined, and designers are offering transformative pieces with multiple options. For example, detachable trains, removable capes, removable sleeves, or overskirts. All of these options allow you to have one look for your ceremony and another for your reception, but all in the same gown. As my niece recently said, “You only get to wear it once – don’t be in such a hurry to take it off!” At the end of the day, your gown must exhibit who you are and what you’re about. As Oscar De La Renta again sums it up: “Things never happen on accident. In doing so, they’ve discovered that it offers them the opportunity to explore more nontraditional venues such as yachts, rooftops, and backyard weddings. WEEKDAY WEDDINGS 2020 had lasting effects on the wedding industry. There has been minimal vendor and venue availability throughout 2021 due to reschedules. From late night food trucks to boozy popsicles, we are noticing the personal touches that couples are incorporating into their celebrations by planning menus around their favorite foods, their first date or the night they shared their first kiss. It’s so romantic! RELAXED LUXURY Less fuss, more fun! While we know the classic black-tie wedding will always be around, we are seeing more of a relaxed vibe from our couples. By Julie Simmons In Florida, we are used to heat waves and cold fronts, but what about wedding fronts? A wave of brides and grooms who are tired of staying home and are ready to celebrate is breaking over Amelia Island. Once again, our island paradise has become a prime destination to say, “I do!” As we look ahead to the fall and winter wedding season, let’s check in with what’s turning heads in wedding styles this year. First, couples are thinking about weddings in all new ways. The Covid pandemic changed us, and we have new mindsets. The same goes for wedding planning! First and foremost, a major change in the general approach to weddings has occurred, with couples shifting from a couple-centered event to a guest-centered mindset. 38 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
This is evident particularly when it comes to the format and order of events. Many couples are moving from “one formal day” to a series of celebrations. Think about a pre-ceremony private cocktail party with your closest circle, an outdoors, socially-distanced ceremony, followed by a wedding brunch for extended family, a cocktail hour for the friends, and even a full-on evening party for the young—and the young-at-heart! To keep guests comfortable and safe, the Mr. and Mrs. tobe are exhibiting great creativity with unique and memorable results. Technology is playing an important role in today’s nuptials as well. The events of 2020 taught us that virtual can still be meaningful! Couples are extending the reach of their celebration to virtual guests and equipping them to celebrate from afar with boxes of confetti, champagne, and balloons. Food is following a similar transformation, influenced by the guest-forward mindset. Individual servings are very popular, such as tiny charcuterie boards and sushi flights. Another interesting twist on the menu is to have it tell your story: serve your favorite cocktail ahead of the ceremony, showcase cuisine from your first date, or a cooking station of the favorite dish you cook together at home. The creative possibilities are endless! The colors of weddings this season are also taking bold forms. Bright palates like coral are trending alongside neon for signage, lights, and more. Couples are wanting to make a statement, and they are not afraid to mix striking colors—or earthy tones—to accentuate this important season. Metallics are also very popular; brides are choosing sequins, metallic signage, and even metallic chargers and other dinnerware accessories to bring shine to the day. Another evident mindset shift is in formality. Keep an eye on wedding invitations that are casual, abandoning “proper Bridal Party” language. Couples are opting for day-to-day lingo and keeping the environment in the forefront. When it comes to décor, couples are choosing aesthetics they can reuse or recycle. This season, expect to see more dried flowers, grandmother’s china, and use of technology in spaces like RSVPs to reduce footprints. When it comes to floral this season, couples are going green, too! Think about potted plants in terracotta pots and topiaries. In addition, much like all fashion these days, monochromatic is stunning. Be it green, white, or dusty rose, an array of shades presents an organic and peaceful aura to the celebration.
