AS EDITOR OF THIS MAGAZINE, I HAVE learned more about weddings than I ever imagined—it makes me wish my husband Phil and I could get married all over again! I spent time growing up in a small town on Cape Cod, and when it came time to get married, we decided to tie the knot there. At the time, I knew very little about planning a wedding, and I have often thought about the many things that I would do differently if I could do it all over. But the one thing we definitely did do right was choosing a lovely coastal location that our guests would love. It made me realize how blessed this area is with incomparable vistas, great venues, and tons of charm. A wedding on Amelia speaks to a love of natural beauty and serene surroundings and a desire to share that beauty with friends and family. Visitors and residents know about Amelia’s unique allure. With its vast stretches of beach, scenic pockets of marsh, and moss-draped oaks, it’s a place that seems to resonate in the soul. So many brides and grooms have found this place to be a unique island retreat, the ideal backdrop for their wedding celebration. In reading their stories, we’ve observed that couples who infuse their wedding day with personal touches are often the most

pleased with their big day. Whether it be incorporating favorite menu items, planning other fun events (like a day of beach fun and bodysurfing), or honoring your family’s traditions and values through ceremony and music, each segment of the celebration comes together to create that vision. Of course, that is easier said than done, and working with professionals who are attentive to your vision of the day and know how to achieve it will definitely help. Fortunately, here on Amelia, there are many wonderful wedding professionals ready to lend their expertise, and—with many unique venues and breathtaking vistas—they have so much to work with. Whether you’re a resident, a frequent visitor, or a newcomer to Amelia, we hope that our magazine will help you to envision the extraordinary wedding possibilities right here on this beautiful 13-mile-long island. Your guests are sure to bring home some indelible memories of a unique celebration in a captivating setting—as well as a little sand in their shoes!

TRADITIONAL ELEGANCE Legendary for their exceptional service, the ladies and gentlemen at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island are devoted to creating a truly memorable experience for every bride who walks through the door. The talented team, led by catering sales manager Anastasia Stone, employs a full-service approach to planning that addresses every detail, while allowing the couple to feel as though they are guests at their own wedding. For the event itself, the property can accommodate everything from an intimate seaside ceremony for two to a grand gala for hundreds on the sweeping oceanfront lawn. Inside, a variety of sumptuous spaces showcase the classic sophistication of the island’s only five-diamond resort. In November 2009, The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island completed construction on a modern new ballroom. The romantic exterior colonnade and the exquisite interior décor combine to create a perfect setting for the bride seeking a venue touched by Southern elegance. For an elegant wedding celebration that will sweep you back in time to the luxury of a by-gone era, try The Ribault Club. Located on beautiful Fort George Island just south of Amelia, The Ribault Club began as a luxurious winter retreat for wealthy industrialists in the late 1920’s. A fantastic circular drive leading up to the elegant Georgian facade of the clubhouse makes for a fabulous entrance and exit for the bride and groom. Surrounded by ancient live oaks dripping with moss and towering palm trees, the exquisitely restored historic building, made of wood and white painted brick with French windows and green shutters, is the perfect setting for a stunning wedding. Designed in a horse-shoe shape with a ballroom on one end and a dining room on the other, the club offers a variety of different spaces, including a covered verandah overlooking the lush shaded lawn and the Fort George River. A series of smaller salons can provide a perfect place to store gifts, or a place for kids to gather and watch a movie during a reception. Lorna Meehan and her professional staff will help you with every detail for a truly memorable event. The Golf Club of Amelia Island at Summer Beach is a luxurious private golf club that provides the perfect venue for a wedding of any style. The Club Terrace, with its moss-draped oaks, overlooks the beautifully maintained golf course. The Clubhouse itself offers a magnificent view of the 18th green and embraces its country club flair in its elegant Fireplace Room. In addition, Summer Beach Resort boasts the Beach Club, a stunning poolside location overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Lisa Presnell, Professional Wedding Consultant and Catering Sales Director, suggests for an ideal Amelia Island destination wedding that a couple might enjoy the Beach Club for a rehearsal dinner, a wedding ceremony on the Club Terrace or Lawn, followed by dinner and dancing at the Golf Clubhouse. This allows the opportunity to experience the variety of settings that The Golf Club of Amelia Island at Summer Beach has to offer. The club is also available for bridal teas and luncheons, welcome receptions, and golf outings. Oyster Bay Yacht Club, a private yacht club and marina, is an exquisite destination for weddings, receptions, rehearsal dinners, and corporate retreats. Nestled among canopied oak trees with expansive water views, the stunning clubhouse boasts 7,500 square feet of combined venue space. Whether it’s a casual coastal wedding marsh-side on the Oyster Deck or formal exchange of vows at sunset overlooking the marina, Oyster Bay Yacht Club can effortlessly accommodate your every need. The wedding party and

guests can even arrive by water taxi from historic Fernandina Beach. Set among 27 holes of true Florida golf, Fernandina Beach Golf Club provides a beautiful setting for weddings, receptions, parties, and more, and can also be the perfect place for a wedding weekend golf outing. The course offers a fun and enjoyable day of golf at rates that won’t bust your budget. The spacious clubhouse, with its professional kitchen facilities, can accommodate everything from large receptions to small, intimate wedding celebrations. The hotel wedding coordinator will assist you in creating a memorable event tailored to fit your expectations, the comfort of your guests, and your budget. According to the hotel’s wedding coordinator, The Amelia Hotel at the Beach loves weddings. “We help plan the event and focus on the details so the bride and groom can enjoy their day whether it be indoors or on the beach.” Right on the beach at the foot of Sadler Road, Sliders Seaside Grill offers a festive atmosphere for couples who are looking for an authentic island experience. With their Oceanfront Tiki Bar and deck, Caribbean-style dining, a raw bar and sushi bar, and even a children’s playground, Sliders has something for everyone in your group. With the addition of a brand new second floor oceanfront bar and deck, Sliders now offer space for over 200 guests with unsurpassed views of the beach and the sandy dunes just steps away. Sliders oceanfront location lets you marry on the beach, if you wish, and walk through the dunes right into Sliders back courtyard. Sliders will prepare the perfect menu to suit any taste for a memorable reception, rehearsal dinner, or bridal luncheon or tea. Located on the ocean next to Seaside Park, Sliders is also close to a number of the island’s fine hotels. The Days Inn & Suites is one block from the beach, and its accommodating staff is ready to handle all your wedding arrangements. The hotel can handle weddings from the very formal to the more casual, and the centrally located inn itself can serve as a hub for various fun activities. The Days Inn & Suites has three spacious banquet rooms, the Jasmine, Azalea and Magnolia, from which to choose. Each guest room has a microwave and a refrigerator, and some rooms offer kitchenettes. A pool is available to relax in or do morning laps, and a lounge offers entertainment in the evening. Because the inn is so close to the ocean, it is an ideal place to stay before and after a beach wedding, and a great place to hold a reception. Located just one block from the beach on Sadler Road is the award-winning Hampton Inn, Amelia Island at Fernandina Beach. Their wedding specialist offers several wedding packages from which to choose. Their spacious and comfortable rooms feature all white bedding, new 32” high definition—flat paneled televisions, a microwave, refrigerator, coffeemaker, and high-speed wireless Internet access. The hotel features a complimentary hot breakfast each morning and a sizeable outdoor pool. Don’t miss the fresh baked cookies each evening! The hotel also loans their guests beach chairs, umbrellas, boogie boards, and beach towels at no cost.

And the central location means you can walk to the beach, a variety of restaurants or shops, and you’re just a short ride from historic downtown Fernandina Beach. For brides, the Hampton Inn also provides a free personalized wedding website and the chance to earn free rooms. This location can accommodate large groups comfortably, all with the 100% Hampton money-back guarantee. On the Atlantic Ocean at Main Beach is the new Seaside Amelia Inn. The inn’s 47 comfortable guest rooms or onebedroom suites are elegantly appointed and include flat screen televisions, microwaves, mini-refrigerators, and Internet access, with oceanfront, pool, or sunset views. A complimentary breakfast is also included. The Seaside Amelia Inn boasts a rooftop terrace with panoramic views of the ocean for receptions or events, as well as reception rooms for smaller groups or events. Enjoy a wedding ceremony on the beach and entertain your guests on the rooftop terrace, the outdoor courtyard, or the pool deck. For honeymoon or guests’ lodging, the Amelia Surf & Racquet Club offers one-, two-, or three-bedroom condominium suites with private balconies overlooking the beach. With magnificent views of the Atlantic, direct access to a private beach, and two pools overlooking the sandy beachfront, a stay at the Amelia Surf & Racquet Club gives its guests an oceanfront vacation experience. Each suite is professionally decorated and offers amenities such as cable television, a full-sized kitchen, and washer and dryer. Free tennis on clay surface courts is included, and local golf courses, restaurants, and plenty of activities are all within minutes of the resort. For an exclusive private wedding on Cumberland Island, Greyfield Inn, built by the Carnegie family in 1900, offers a luxurious hotel with all the contemporary amenities. The Inn specializes in exclusive and intimate three-day wedding events, accommodating 32 guests for a private weekend getaway. HOLLY ALLAIN PHOTOGRAPHY
AND THAT’S NOT ALL Of course, there are lots of options to choose from when you’re considering an island wedding. On Amelia, there are many lovely bed & breakfast inns that can provide an elegant and intimate setting for your special day. The circa 1856 Amelia Island Williams House on South Ninth Street in downtown Fernandina Beach is owned and operated by Byron and Deborah McCutchen. Beautifully landscaped gardens and a spacious courtyard are the perfect venue for a wedding celebration whether intimate or grand. Smaller weddings and receptions can also be held in the elegant dining room and Victorian parlor. Byron and Deborah’s attention to detail has created a special place for an island wedding and they are ready to help you with all the arrangements. The beautifully restored Victorian is also on a quiet street downtown within easy range of all the restaurants, shops, and sightseeing that the downtown has to offer. For an intimate, romantic gathering in downtown Fernandina Beach, step into the Hoyt House, an elegant 1905 Queen Anne style ten-bedroom en suite mansion. The manicured grounds, softly illuminated by lights hanging from the 500-year-old moss-laden oak tree, create a breathtaking evening ambience. Their grounds, gazebo, and poolside make a wonderful location for a rehearsal dinner, ceremony, or cocktail reception. Walk indoors through 11foot double French doors, where three gracious sitting rooms await, along with a baby grand piano playing your favorite compositions. Weekend guests enjoy luxurious shower gels and soaps, lush robes and wraps, a three-course gourmet breakfast, and lounging in the terry-covered chaise lounge chairs by the pool and spa. They also offer an authentic English Tea Wednesday through Sunday, from 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Innkeeper Deborah Gold says: “Come home to The Hoyt House. We will exceed your expectations!” If you are looking for more room for your wedding party, the Hampton Inn & Suites Historic Harborfront Hotel might just be the answer. Director of Sales Bill Pennington says, “‘Location! Location! Location!’ is an old advertising term, but it really does apply as to why so many brides pick our unique destination.” Located on the Intracoastal Waterway overlooking the Fernandina Beach Marina, the Hampton Inn & Suites offers spacious and comfortable accommodations. Take advantage of staying in the heart of the historic district—a short walking distance to many of the island’s renowned restaurants and shops. The Hampton Inn & Suites can accommodate weddings and receptions from five to AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 11

85, and offers specialty suites for all types of brides. Room types include traditional rooms, two-room suites, and deluxe whirlpool rooms. For those seeking a truly special place to rest, a stunning bridal suite and a high-class presidential suite are also available. Pennington can provide you with all the information you need and help you with all of your wedding accommodations. Comfort Suites Hotel is located just 135 yards from the beach. Each room at the Comfort Suites is a studio suite, oversized and comfortable, with a sleeper sofa, microwave, refrigerator, coffeemaker, hairdryer, and high-speed Internet access. The Comfort Suites also features a complimentary hot breakfast, fitness center, guest laundry, and an outdoor pool. This new hotel is located in the midst of Fernandina’s Main Beach area, next to Fort Clinch State Park and only 1 1⁄2 miles from the downtown Historic District. Amelia Island’s finest restaurants also provide extraordinary options for an unforgettable event. The Beech Street Grill, located in an historic home in downtown Fernandina Beach, can accommodate a wedding and reception of any size. Rick Erickson, Executive Chef, will provide an unforgettable menu of delicious, distinctive food, with each fabulous course accompanied by the perfect wine. Their restaurant is a true reminder of Fernandina’s elegant past. The Beech Street Grill is also available for rehearsal dinners. Joe’s 2nd Street Bistro, located in the heart of the historic downtown, can also graciously accommodate wedding receptions, rehearsal dinners, and private parties. Joe’s has ample seating room upstairs and down, with a second-story porch that overlooks the Fernandina Beach harbor, as well as a lush, New Orleans-style courtyard. Chef Joe Robucci will help you design the perfect menu of carefully prepared and delicious food for your wedding celebration and he has an excellent wine cellar to compliment whatever menu you choose. Of course, being by the beach also means enjoying the casual beach atmosphere like at The Crab Trap in historic downtown Fernandina Beach. Located on South 2nd Street, this restaurant is a great place for a rehearsal dinner or small reception. The Crab Trap has been a local favorite for 26 years. Owned and operated by the Germano family, The Crab Trap’s nautical décor, friendly service, and great food make it the perfect place for a special Fernandina Beach celebration. The Crab Trap serves fresh local seafood, as well as steaks, lobster, chicken, and oysters. With banquet facilities, a private dining room overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway, two full bars, and two fireplaces, The Crab Trap can accommodate your every need. Nestled under the live oaks in Palmetto Walk, Bar Zin is a chic neighborhood bistro that’s all about having fun with family and friends, while enjoying great American bistro food and wine. What better place for a very special gathering of friends and family? With an outdoor brick-paved courtyard under the canopy cover of the live oaks, as well as a wraparound porch and elegant dining room and bar, the indoor and outdoor spaces are ready to welcome small intimate parties, or larger gatherings of up to 49 people. (The courtyard can hold another 49.) Whether it’s a rehearsal dinner, a bridal luncheon, a small reception, or just a gathering of friends, owner Tim Seyda’s passion for excellent wine and food and his attention to detail promise to make every event one to remember. Located in Fernandina’s historic district, Le Clos serves delicious Provençal dishes by candlelight in a charming, intimate 1906 cottage. For a romantic and enchanting atmosphere, Le
Clos hosts rehearsal dinners or other bridal events, as well as small receptions. But it’s not only about the atmosphere: classically inspired Provencal cuisine is finely crafted and presented by Chef/ owner Katherine Ewing, who received full degrees in both cuisine and pastry from Le Cordon Bleu and L’Ecole de Gastronomie Francaise Ritz-Escoffier, Paris, and trained at the Ritz Hotel, Paris, France. Le Clos also offer an exceptional wine selection, and their menu emphasizes the freshest ingredients, including local fresh seafood. With its superb setting and cuisine, Le Clos is the ideal place for exceptional events. Located inside a charming historic building on Third Street in historic downtown Fernandina Beach, Cafe Karibo offers a fun and relaxed atmosphere, with several different areas from which to choose. Indoors, you’ll find colorful furnishings in a comfortable environment, as well as the inviting but laid-back bar at Karibrew, the restaurant’s own brew pub. Outdoors, a large garden patio is shaded by huge oak trees for wonderful al fresco experience. With the addition of a second floor, Café Karibo now offers spacious seating for up to 80 people, perfect for rehearsal dinners or receptions. With its unique atmosphere, well-appointed bar, and microbrewery, as well as a wonderfully eclectic menu, an event at Café Karibo is always a fun and memorable dining experience. WHATEVER YOUR HEART DESIRES Whether shaded by a canopy of ancient oaks, overlooking scenic marshes, or on a pristine beach, Amelia Island provides the perfect natural backdrop to an unforgettable wedding celebration. With its Southern charm, vivid history, great natural beauty, and abundant activities, it’s a great place for a one-ofa-kind wedding. SHANNON PRICE HAS LIVED ON AMELIA ISLAND SINCE SHE WAS TWO years old, and locals have enjoyed watching her grow into a beautiful, smart, and poised young lady. They knew that when her “Prince Charming” came along, her wedding would have to be very special, as she knew everyone in town, knew all the unusual places to stage a spectacular wedding, and could choose vendors whom she knew personally to carry out her wedding dreams. It would take a village to stage her wedding. Shannon, who was student government president at Fernandina Beach High School and a magna cum laude double-degree graduate of the University of Georgia, also has parents who are well known in 14 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
the community. Her father is John Price, the popular, well-respected director of golf at The Golf Club of Amelia Island, and her mother is Sandy Price, executive director of the Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival. Sandy certainly would know how to handle the details of a large wedding, as well as the people who could help put it all together. Shannon was introduced to Robert “Chip” Newell at a concert at the University of Georgia while they were in their junior year. She laughs when she admits that at first she was “not impressed.” He certainly noticed Shannon, however, and, much later, he asked for a second chance to date her. He grew up in Baton Rouge, and now works for New Belgium Brewing.
They dated for a while, and, after graduation, she lived for two years in Los Angeles, then later in Houston, before heading to Atlanta for a job in commercial real estate with Grubb and Ellis. She and Chip had become serious by this time, and he was well into his business career and also in the process of moving from Denver to Atlanta, after taking a job as the “Georgia Beer Ranger” with New Belgium Brewing when the territory was launched in 2009. Ready to buy a house in Atlanta, he wanted to show Shannon his top five house choices in Candler Park, a neighborhood they both loved. They hopped on their bikes to take a tour. When she selected her favorite house, he said, “Great, that’s the one I just bought!” and while sitting on the porch swing, he proposed. She said, “I was so shocked and surprised that I said a disbelieving “no!” but quickly corrected that and said, “Yes! Yes!” That was May 2010, and the planning would take more than a year to complete and involve many friends and locations on Amelia Island. The wedding planner for the myriad details would be family friend Lorna Meehan, who coordinates weddings for
the Ribault Club. She was eager to assist Shannon as her gift to the bride and enlisted Marsha Joyner and Stephanie Lunt Holt for extra help on wedding day. Goodie bags for the guests included weekend itineraries printed by Hamilton Press and caramel popcorn from Fantastic Fudge. The groomsmen’s brunch was at Kelley’s Courtyard Café downtown, while the bridesmaids, along with Shannon’s sister, Christy, as maid of honor, would hold their luncheon at Elizabeth Pointe Lodge on the beach. The Golf Club of Amelia Island would be the setting for the rehearsal dinner, with an “Ode to Louisiana” theme. Chip’s parents, Bob and Roxanne Newell, and his sister, Lesley, wanted to showcase a Cajun dinner for their new Florida family. Kevin Kreminski, food and beverage director of the Golf Club of Amelia Island, took on the challenge, creating an outstanding Cajun menu, assisted by Lisa Presnell, wedding coordinator for the club. The Golf Club waitstaff was delighted to be involved in Shannon’s wedding, as many of them had watched her grow up, while Artistic Florist made the AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 15
room festive with dramatic punches of red and turquoise. Gifts for the guests were small bottles of Tabasco, cleverly labeled to honor the bride and groom. From the beginning, Shannon knew she wanted to be married on the golf course, which had been part of her father’s life for so long. “In 24 years, I had never closed the golf course for a wedding,” says John Price, “but if one of my daughters wanted to have her wedding there, there was no question about my saying ‘yes!’” But the day of August 20 turned out to be the hottest and driest on record. To avoid the searing temperatures during a late afternoon wedding, careful planning came into play. The ceremony would be nestled against the 2nd green and situated under a large oak tree. Every chair was carefully positioned in the cool shade, and the wedding program was cleverly turned into a hand fan and presented to each guest. Longtime friends Pat Reese and Sam Butler, who each live on that part of the golf course, opened their homes for the wedding party preparations. The Amelia Trolley transported the guests to the ceremony, and gospel music by The Peck Community Ensemble filled the golf course. And, no surprise: Shannon and Chip left the ceremony by golf cart! Amelia Transportation’s Party Bus then took the wedding party to Shannon’s favorite locations on the island for picture taking. There were just so many personal and meaningful touches throughout the wedding. The bride’s dress, purchased in Atlanta, was 16 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
a fitted sheath of silk charmeuse, highlighted by a bateau neckline, while her veil was designed and hand-sewn by her aunt, Helen Jancik of Marietta, Ga. Shannon’s upswept hair was arranged by Terry Jones of Island Illusions, while Holli Souther assisted the other girls. The attendant’s dresses were designed by one of the bridesmaids, Marea Clements, and they carried vintage handkerchiefs monogrammed locally by Bobbie Lum of P5 Productions. Wearing custom-made coin pearl necklaces and earrings, the ten bridesmaids showcased Ellen Jensen’s company, Luxe Pearls. Ellen is the former buyer for the pro shop of the Golf Club of Amelia Island. Not to be outdone, the guys wore checkered ties that Chip had personally designed to compliment their grey and white seersucker suits. Then, it was on to The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island for a glorious and glamorous reception coordinated by Beth Place, with even Kate Monahan, former general manager of The RitzCarlton, Amelia Island, checking on the details. Aaron Bean, a local politician and next-door neighbor to the Prices for many years, was the enthusiastic emcee for all the introductions. Wowing the guests was an exquisite Ritz-Carlton signature dinner, including tenderloin, country ham, and shrimp and grits. In addition to an elegant and delicious wedding cake, Shannon chose warm brownies and peach cobbler topped with her “must-have” Blue Bell ice cream, a taste acquired from her days working in Texas. The 230 lucky guests at the reception danced the night away to music of The Buzzcatz group, while Shannon and Chip slipped away for a wedding trip to Italy’s Amalfi Coast. It was a wedding to be cherished and remembered. It expressed all the love a home town could lavish on one of its favorite daughters. Yes, it did take the whole village! AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 17
Sharon & Roger THE AMELIA ISLAND WILLIAMS HOUSE By Julie Simmons • Photography by Pam Bell Photography GROOMSMEN TRADITIONALLY JOKE THAT THE BEST PART OF THEIR JOB is meeting the bridesmaids. Roger Smith agrees, as his day as best man led him to his future bride, Sharon McCalla. The two originally met years ago as attendants in their friends’ wedding, but didn’t start dating until they met again at the 25th anniversary celebration of that couple in 2010. Just a few months later, they were planning a celebration of their own at the Amelia Island Williams House. The Jamaican couple, who were living in Texas and New York, had never visited Amelia Island when they selected it as their wedding destination. “I am a vintage sort of bride,” says Sharon, “and I liked the idea of a bed & breakfast.” With family and friends traveling from all over the world, Florida was a central location, and when they found innkeeper Deborah McCutchen, the deal was sealed. “We just fell in love with Roger and Sharon,” says Deborah. “They are such spiritual people, and we enjoyed sharing their Jamaican 18 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
heritage, customs, and traditions. Their family and friends became our friends.” This intimacy was exactly what Roger and Sharon wanted for their September 24, 2011 wedding. Guests arrived from as far as England and Jamaica, and those not staying with the wedding party enjoyed their stay at the Hoyt House. “The thing we love most about doing weddings is that we love to share our home,” says Deborah. “The Williams House is like stepping back in time, when life moved at a slower pace and people took time to socialize. Here guests visit, renew old times, have meals together, and relax on our front porch, enjoying each other’s company.” The Smiths’ guests agreed, many of them calling it “the best wedding weekend we’ve ever experienced.” The night before the wedding, everyone gathered at Horizons Restaurant. “The Horizons staff was wonderful, going above and beyond in every way,” explains Roger. “When we had unexpected guests arrive, they smiled and welcomed them.”
On the wedding day, the groom and his best man enjoyed the Amelia River Golf Club, while Sharon and several of the female guests relaxed at The Spa at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island. At six o’clock in the evening, the bride, wearing an ivory Sottero & Midgley mermaid gown with a light gold lace overlay, was delivered by horse and carriage to the front walk of the Williams House! “When I dress Boomer, the carriage horse,
in his bow tie, he just naturally heads over to the Williams House,” says Cyndi Myers of Amelia Island Carriages. As Sharon walked to her groom, he sang Placido Domingo and Maureen McGovern’s “A Love unto the End of Time” to his bride. Reverend Jim Tippins customized the ceremony for the couple, including a Handfasting Vow, where three ropes were braided to symbolize the unity of God, Roger, and Sharon. A friend penned a poem for the occasion, which Sharon read and presented as a bookmark to each guest. As the ceremony concluded, the couple took communion then served it to each in attendance. At the reception, Jamaican tradition dictates lengthy toasts, and family and friends were happy to oblige. The tables were decorated in champagne and burnt-orange with hydrangeas, calla lilies, and roses. Guests loved the colorful crab salad, snapper, beef, and chicken served by Horizons. D.J. Will Deaton of Resort Talent did a tremendous job of keeping the evening lively and providing everyone’s favorite music. Perhaps the highlight of the reception was a traditional Jamaican dessert: a cake made with fruits that have been soaked in port wine and rum for over six months. It was a sweet ending to a wedding that was filled with the warmth of time-honored traditions. The couple spent the night with their guests, bid them farewell, and enjoyed the week at Omni Amelia Island Plantation, where they are sure to start a new tradition—returning to the island that hosted their beautiful celebration. Jennifer & Brad T H E R I B A U LT C L U B By Kate Harris Photography by Caroline Nicole Photography
WHEN JENNIFER VANPUYMBROUK MARRIED BRAD MOKRIS ON MAY 23, 2011, her wedding day went so well, it left her with only one wish: “I would love to get married to Brad again. It truly was the best day. I often ask my Mom if we can do it again!” The couple met at the University of Florida, where Jennifer was in dental school and Brad was training to become an orthodontist and working as a teacher’s assistant in a class that Jennifer attended. Despite a rigorous study schedule, the two fell in love—over their medical textbooks—and both finished their advanced degrees while starting to think about their future life together. Although Jennifer considers herself “a huge planner,” she was nevertheless completely surprised by Brad’s proposal. “I was dropping hints about going away somewhere,” remembers Jennifer, “but I had no idea that he had bought a ring.” The proposal happened on a regular weekday morning, when Jennifer and Brad decided to go out for breakfast together. Brad asked if they could stop and drop off her dog first, and as Jennifer opened the door to let in the dog, she was stunned to find the floor covered in rose petals. Brad got down on one knee, but as he was opening the ring box, the ring flew onto the floor and disappeared in the rose petals. “I was so surprised, I was shaking,” says Jennifer. “Fortunately, we managed to find the ring among the petals!” After the rose-petal proposal, the couple was ready to plan their big day. With a guest list that included over 100 friends and relatives who would be traveling to Amelia Island from around the country, the couple needed some serious planning. Mother of the bride Donna Lynne VanPuymbrouck and a family friend, events coordinator Barbara Morse, enthusiastically stepped forward to help out. “Brad comes from a large family, and they don’t get together very often, so we organized a few different functions before the wedding,” says VanPuymbrouk, who is a successful builder at the helm of Donna Lynne Custom Homes. A highlight was a welcome barbeque at Donna Lynne’s house at High Pointe, where over 50 visiting guests enjoyed the Florida weather poolside on the patio. Many of the guests had never been to Amelia before, and, with the wedding taking place over Memorial Day weekend, everyone had a wonderful time getting acquainted with the area. 20 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
The Hampton Inn & Suites in downtown Fernandina Beach served as guest headquarters, allowing guests to walk to shops and restaurants, while the Elizabeth Pointe Lodge gave other guests a fabulous beachfront experience. After a moving ceremony at St. Michael Catholic Church, guests travelled by bus to the Ribault Club. With its variety of both indoor and outdoor spaces available, the Ribault Club provided an environment that would be both traditional and relaxed, as guests could wander around the secluded natural setting outdoors, yet enjoy the historic ambience of the pristinely renovated clubhouse. Guests arrived to a gorgeous sunset and a light breeze coming off the water, as they joined the cocktail hour under the live oaks. Indoors, the décor was traditional, drawing on Jennifer’s love of lace, with lace details and place settings in pale yellow that were monogrammed with the bride and groom’s initials entwined. In a nod to the couple’s shared schooling and current professions, a tooth crowned the groom’s cake, made by Bliss Cupcakery.
An outdoor dance area featured live music, open-bulb lights strung across the trees, and an outdoor bar—all set near a stately live oak tree. Jennifer had planned on a farewell full of sparklers, but she discovered that, because the Ribault Club is part of the Florida State Park system, that would not be possible. As the sun went down and the dance floor filled up, guests broke out glow sticks, which illuminated the evening and offered a farewell glow. Although no one wanted to leave, the parting was made sweeter by a touch Donna Lynne added in place of the standard favor box: a “Good Night Bar,” with monogrammed cookies, chocolate milk, and coffees, all packaged with a sweet message for the guests to take with them. When asked if she has any advice for brides looking to plan a magical night of their own, Jennifer admits that she used issues of Amelia Island Weddings from the past three years to get ideas—and, of course, there was her natural love of planning. “I put the magazine’s checklist in my huge wedding folder and checked things off as we went along,” she says. “It definitely worked for us.” AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 21

AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS ARE SO ATTRACTIVE BECAUSE THE GUESTS can enjoy the island’s unique setting just as much as the bride and groom. This was exactly the case at MarySusan Threlkeld and Jack Fulbright’s wedding. The couple originally met at Florida State University’s Presbyterian Center and were great friends. After graduation they lost touch, until they unexpectedly met while shopping in Brunswick, GA, where each had relocated for work. Excited to reconnect and have a friend in the area, they began spending time together, and, in February 2010, Jack surprised MarySusan with a diamond—and the preparations commenced. “We chose Amelia Island because we wanted a beach ambiance with a chapel-wedding setting,” explains the bride. MarySusan is a professional violinist who is currently performing with the Albany Symphony Orchestra. She had performed at several weddings at the Amelia Plantation Chapel and fell in love with the natural 22 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
beauty of the area, particularly at the Oyster Bay Yacht Club. “We found the venue through Amelia Island Weddings Magazine and we knew it was perfect for us,” says MarySusan. Oyster Bay Yacht Club offers 7,500 square feet of warm and welcoming space—Old Florida-style—with covered porches, verandas, cozy seating, and a great fireplace. One of its best features is its location on the Intracoastal Waterway, with amazing views over the saltmarsh. “The site is reminiscent of a large, cozy waterfront home,” says the bride, “and we loved the fact that our celebration could take place both indoors and outdoors.” The couple followed a family tradition by choosing a date of family significance: the weekend of October 1, 2011, which coincided with two family birthdays and two anniversaries. An added bonus was that it was also the weekend of the annual Amelia Island Jazz Festival. “Music was an important part of
our weekend, and we loved having the festival as a backdrop,” explains MarySusan. Some guests chose to stay in downtown Fernandina Beach at The Hampton Inn & Suites Historic Harborfront Hotel, while others chose to stay closer to the beach. Joe’s 2nd Street Bistro was the setting for the rehearsal dinner. “We adored the downtown ambiance and the private balcony dining area at Joe’s, where guests enjoyed hearing the music of the Jazz Festival playing nearby,” says the bride. On the wedding day, the bridal party enjoyed spa treatments, while the groomsmen watched football. When the clock reached 5 p.m., the doors to the chapel opened, and MarySusan appeared in her Pronovias ivory silk strapless gown with a cathedral train, holding a vibrant orange and yellow autumn bouquet designed by Brooke Raulerson, AIFD, FSMD, of Artistic Florist in Fernandina Beach. Harp and violin provided the perfect musical ambience for the ceremony. A black 1940 Cadillac transported the bride and groom to the celebration at Oyster Bay, with its beautiful and serene natural setting that the couple loved so much. “What they loved most was that nature provided the décor,” explains Terrie Sanders,
Oyster Bay Yacht Club manager. “They complemented that with some simple fresh flower centerpieces for a splash of color.” Their parents’ and grandparents’ wedding photos filled the clubhouse, and the marina, adjacent to the clubhouse, was the couple’s favorite spot for capturing their own unique photographs. Guests danced the night away under the covered pool deck, while enjoying a menu of local favorites, including fresh seafood, southern vegetables, and a potato and pasta bar prepared by Oyster Bay Yacht Club. There was a beach motif wedding cake, and Bliss Cupcakery and More prepared the groom’s FSU Seminole cake. The next morning, the newlyweds and guests gathered for brunch at Horizons Restaurant, where owner Courtney Thompson opened just for the Fulbrights. “She did a marvelous brunch buffet and offered outdoor seating,” explains MarySusan. “We just loved the way our theme of casual beach elegance was carried out in each venue, from the rehearsal dinner to the reception to the post-wedding brunch,” says the couple. “Balconies, front porches, and Old Florida charm worked for us.” Many guests are planning a return vacation, while the happy couple loves to visit often and reflect on their very special day. Melissa & Derek W A L K E R ’ S L A N D I N G AT A M E L I A I S L A N D P L A N TAT I O N By Jan Davis

MELISSA MELVIN AND DEREK O’GRADY ARE TRUE HIGH SCHOOL sweethearts. They met about seven years ago, while they were both students at Fernandina Beach High School. At the time, Derek was working in the local Subway sandwich shop, and Melissa’s best friend, Becky Clemons, who knew Derek, insisted they should meet. She “dragged” Melissa to the sandwich shop, telling her, “There he is! Go talk to him.” Melissa and Derek went out that night. “It was immediate super-infatuation, love at first sight,” remembers Melissa. “We have not been apart since.” Melissa grew up in Yulee with her parents, Kelli and Edwin Melvin, and spent her high school years working for Dr. Greg Smith, the local orthopedic surgeon. From that experience, she thought nursing would be her career, but after a few nursing courses at Florida State Community College, she opted to go into teaching. She obtained her degree from University of North Florida and, although she and Derek had been together so long, she wanted that degree in hand before she married. She is now a 24 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
resource teacher for Yulee Elementary, her neighborhood school. Derek also has local roots. He is an electrical estimator for his Dad’s company, Westside Electric. It’s a true family business: not only does Derek work there, but so do a brother, a sister, and several other relatives. Derek’s dad, Jim O’Grady, recently married Lisa Vanderwege, well known locally as the owner of Gourmet Gourmet and one of the premier caterers in the area. Lisa’s expertise in planning weddings was much appreciated. Lisa had already been involved to a great degree with the engagement. As a complete surprise for Melissa, Gourmet Gourmet became the venue for what Melissa thought was going to be a “welcome home dinner” for Derek’s sister. When Melissa arrived, not only was Derek nowhere to be seen, but the family had a video camera running. She didn’t understand at first, but it all became clear when she turned around to find Derek on his knee, asking her to marry him. He gave her a beautiful and very unusual ring designed by Scott & Sons, a local jewelry store owned by Drew and
Parker Scott. She was delighted that the proposal came in such a warm setting, surrounded by family. Melissa and her Mom, Kelli, whom Melissa considers a best friend, went to work immediately on the myriad details, working together tirelessly to make it all perfect. Gourmet Gourmet became the setting for the rehearsal dinner held on November 11. When the evening turned out to be a little cool for a dinner outside under the stars, they just set up some patio heaters. Since it was an intimate gathering of 24 people, Lisa and Jim pulled out the stops, serving filet mignon and lobster. The wedding itself was held at Walker’s Landing, a beautiful venue at Amelia Island Plantation overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway. Walker’s Landing has magical views of the sunset, and Melissa and Derek chose their timing carefully to take full advantage of the setting sun. The ceremony was held on the back deck and officiated by Donna Gray, a family friend who is a notary. Because of Lisa’s expertise, sense of style, and extreme organization, Melissa and her Mom wanted Lisa to do the catering, but they were worried that she wouldn’t be able to enjoy herself on the day of the wedding. Fortunately, with Lisa’s thirty years’ experience in catering, that was not a problem. “A couple of peeks in the kitchen, and I had a new appreciation for my very competent staff,” says Lisa. “They knew just what to do.” Both Melissa and Derek were so eager to get the ceremony underway, they both arrived hours early. But once they settled down, everything moved smoothly, thanks to Melissa’s mother’s effort in the planning. Melissa chose bright colors of fuchsia and lime green, and Shirley Page of Flowers by Shirley designed flowers in elegant crystal tall and short arrangements for the tables. And surprise! They were all silk flowers—so real, no one could believe they were not fresh. Teresa Nguyen, make-up artist, and hair stylists Cheryl Paasche and Maria Evatt of Madi’s Retreat, Hair, and Spa, all helped the three bridesmaids get ready for the ceremony and even did make-up for Melissa’s 92-year-old grandmother. And the final chapter was a fantastic honeymoon cruise to the Caribbean—a loving gift from Derek’s dad. From love at first sight at Subway to two well-grounded adults who know what they want for the future and are now planning to buy a house together, it was a wedding long in the making—made special by their loving and supportive families. Vacationers and locals alike feasted on the nightly buffets that featured fresh seafood and Southern-style meats, vegetables, soups, and salads. engagement rings By Lindy Kavanaugh WHILE DIAMONDS HAVE BEEN THE TRADITIONAL choice in engagement rings for generations, many brides are choosing to add a splash of color to their engagement ring. The trend received a surge of popularity most recently when Prince William of England gave Kate Middleton the dazzling eighteen carat oval sapphire engagement ring that once belonged to his late mother, Princess Diana. Celebrities have also helped make colored stone engagement rings a fashion trend. Jessica Simpson wears a five carat ruby ring, and Penelope Cruz owns a three carat sapphire ring. Don’t forget that color can also pertain to diamonds, such as the five carat yellow diamond that Carrie Underwood has and the five carat black diamond worn by the character Carrie Bradshaw from “Sex and the City.” Personal taste, lifestyle, and budget should be contributing factors in deciding whether it is a diamond or another colored gem that you want to make your engagement ring unique. Do you prefer color as your center stone, or as an accent to a center diamond? 30 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
When you take a look at colored stones, keep in mind the four C’s that are most commonly used in diamond grading: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Remember too that not every type of colored stone is suitable for everyday wear. For example, tanzanite and emerald are not as durable as diamonds and could become abraded or even chipped if worn all the time. Diamonds are the hardest stone, a 10 out of 10 on the Mohs Scale of Gemstone Hardness. Comparatively, emerald is a 7.5, and sapphire and ruby are a 9 on the scale. Colored stones can present an attractive alternative to diamonds for engagement rings because of the range of colors available and the many different styles, sizes, and price points. Couples looking for ways to make their dollars go further may consider a larger colored stone center with diamond sides and still get a “big” look for the money. If you’re looking for ways to save money, consider incorporating stones from a family heirloom or something you may already own and resetting them into a modern design that’s more suitable to be worn as the engagement ring. A diamond is forever, yes, but in 20 years you may want to change the look of your engagement ring, regardless of your style today. Go with what suits you and your lifestyle, whether it is an emerald cut yellow diamond with a white diamond halo, or a cushion cut ruby with trapezoid cut white diamonds. FINDING THE
perfect gown
Before stepping into the changing room, contemplate the way you want your wedding gown to look—and feel. By Deana Basile Kelly TRENDS IN WEDDING GOWNS SHIFT FROM YEAR TO YEAR AND CAN even change dramatically from decade to decade. Yet the basic elements of the wedding gown remain the same: traditional white, lace, beads, sumptuous fabrics, and a style flattering to the female figure. How these elements are combined and which are emphasized make all the difference. Designers often work with luxurious fabrics, romantic lace, details of Swarovski crystals, and sumptuous ruching. The art of the design is apparent in the combination of these elements 34 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
with interesting necklines and silhouettes. From glamorous to romantic, vintage to contemporary, the 2012 lines from designers such as Alfred Angelo, Angel Sanchez, and Mon Cheri offer widely divergent styles. Choosing styles that appeal to you is the first step, but what about the feel of the gown? You will be wearing it for hours and will want to feel fabulous in it—comfortable yet beautiful. Light, airy fabrics will have a breezy, soft feel. Sumptuous fabrics with plenty of details will be a bit heavier, but feel extra luxurious and glamorous. When asked for advice on choosing the perfect gown, Michael Shettel, designer for Alfred Angelo, recommends that brides choose a style that is flattering to their figure, but also encourages them to think outside of the box: “Definitely try on the gown you’ve envisioned yourself in since you were a little girl—your dream dress—but, be open to other possibilities. WEDDING
bliss(ters) How to avoid some of the most common wedding pitfalls By Lisa Presnell WE ALL HAVE HAD AT LEAST ONE EXPERIENCE AT A wedding that remains in our memory and that we tend to associate with all weddings. You know what I’m talking about—the things you dread about weddings. Well, brides- and brooms-to-be, here are few tips to prevent those dreaded mistakes. • If your event is at dinner time and there is a lapse between the ceremony and dinner (better known as cocktail hour), make sure you have some beverages, hors d’oeuvres, or light snacks. Don’t make your guests wait too long. Keep it to no longer than an hour. Keep in mind that it will still take a little time after you have your photos taken to get guests seated, make announcements and introductions, and say a blessing. • Hire a coordinator. You need someone to keep everything running smoothly and on time. A coordinator will keep everything on track so you don’t have to worry about a thing. She (or he) will let you know when things should be taking 38 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
• Say “no” to cash bars. If you invited your guests into your home, would you make them pay for a drink? Your wedding is no exception. If your budget does not permit an open bar, then offer beer and wine or a specialty punch. If you choose an alcohol-free wedding, then have a nice brunch celebration. • Do not let the microphone make its way around the room during toasts. First of all, it takes entirely too long, and, secondly, someone who probably should not have the microphone in their hands may get a hold of it. A coordinator or the DJ should assist you with a reception plan for the evening, so that you can have specific toasts and leave it at that. More than three toasts might start boring your guests. It is your special day, of course, but it’s also a celebration with your family and friends and you want to make it as relaxing and fun as you can. When your guests are happy, you can take off on your honeymoon with confidence that you just had an awesome wedding that everyone will remember—for all the right reasons! Lisa Presnell is catering director for The Golf Club of Amelia, an ordained minister, a professional wedding consultant, and owner of Amelia Island Weddings by VOWS, LLC (www.vowsonamelia.com).

STORY OF A
marriage A Legendary Love By Peggy Stanton “ALWAYS BE SWEETHEARTS,” JOHN MCCORMACK, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1962 to 1971, once advised newlyweds who came to visit him in the nation’s capital. “You’re sweethearts before you’re married. If a husband and wife were to carry the sweetheart stage into marriage, they wouldn’t have many difficulties and troubles, despite the fact that life at best is a stony, steep, uphill journey.” Being sweethearts, he insisted, is a state of mind. That simple piece of advice was taken very seriously by those who heard it because the man who delivered it was a protagonist in one of the greatest love stories in the history of the United States Congress. John McCormack lived what he preached. In the corridors of the Capitol, the legend of the speaker’s extraordinary marriage passed from page to policeman, from Congressman to committee aide, until there was scarcely anyone who knew anything about politics in Washington, D.C. or Boston, Massachusetts who didn’t know that John and Harriet McCormack had never spent a night apart in fifty-two years of married life. Everyone knew that, but what no one could comprehend 40 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
was how they did it. What kind of stuff was this woman made of that she could command so much devotion? And what kind of rare politician could put his wife ahead of his career? Perhaps the genesis of that kind of thinking began at the beginning of their marriage, when Harriet laid aside her operatic career to become a full-time wife. There could be only one “star” in the family, Harriet believed, and she was willing to let John be that star. “You have to make great sacrifices in life to attain what you want,” Mrs. McCormack told Presidential daughter Luci Baines Johnson, insisting that no outside love should ever divide a couple’s love for one another and for their God. “And that’s the mistake a lot of people make, and, when they do, the whole thing becomes so confused that sometimes you can’t put it back together again”. Luci never forgot that conversation: “In a world of indecision, especially the world of politics where choosing priorities is so excruciatingly painful, Mrs. McCormack had made her decision and was consistent where her priorities stood.” When it came to priorities, the McCormacks were consistent and resolute. “To me,” said John McCormack, “it was always first things first. Am I going to let politics dominate, where it might interfere with family life? What’s first? Family life. Let politics follow.” Harriet McCormack’s career sacrifice came full circle. Six months after the McCormacks 52nd wedding anniversary, Harriet became ill and was hospitalized for two years. At the pinnacle of power, third in line from the presidency, John McCormack resigned his speakership and his seat in Congress, to take a room next to his wife’s at Providence Hospital, looking after Harriet just as she had looked after him. “Love in a marriage,” Speaker McCormack believed, should effect the completion of two people. Neither should dominate. A husband and wife are two separate individuals and that should be respected, but their love for one another should bring about the welding of those personalities into a unit of one, as contemplated by God.” The sacrosanct bond into which the McCormacks entered on their wedding day not only endured but grew even stronger, as each sacrificed for the other. Both husband and wife were willing to put aside even the loftiest of worldly honors, in recognition that the highest honor is from God to the state of marriage.

honeymoons ON AMELIA
By Theresa Duncan AFTER THE EXCITEMENT AND STRESS OF THROWING what is likely to be the biggest celebration of your life, your honeymoon is a well-deserved reward. It’s a time to take a deep breath, relax, and connect with your other half before embarking on the rest of your lives together. And what better way to reward yourselves than an island getaway for just the two of you? Amelia Island is the polar opposite of stress. The gentle ocean breezes and small-town atmosphere make time feel as if it moves more slowly. As newlyweds, you’ll be looking for a huge dose of relaxation after the excitement of your big day, and you’re sure to find it here. Whether you want to spend a day at a spa, drift down a river, or laze on the beach, Amelia Island has plenty of ways to help you put your feet up. Even planning a honeymoon here is easy. While it feels worlds away, you don’t need a passport to get to this exotic locale. Travel arrangements are simple: the island is only 20 miles from the Jacksonville International Airport and driving distance from many major cities. From charming bed & breakfast inns to lavish resorts, an array of accommodations is available here, each offering its own unique charm. 42 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
What’s more, couples will find an abundance of amenities here, all presented with traditional Southern hospitality. In the center of historic Fernandina Beach, The Fairbanks House has been recognized as one of the most beautiful bed & breakfast inns in the country. The inn boasts striking Italianate architecture and rooms that are comfortable and charming, many with Jacuzzis and private porches. Innkeeper and owner Theresa Hamilton has chocolate and wine awaiting you upon check-in, as well as plush robes, bath oils, and lotions in the rooms. “We cater to romance. We are all about quiet, romantic getaways and we can accommodate every need.” Several of the oversized rooms even have small kitchens, so that you don’t have to be disturbed for your morning cup of coffee. Equally charming is the Amelia Island Williams House, another restored Victorian mansion in the town center. The Williams House’s meticulous restoration extends even into the serene gardens surrounding it. These gardens can be used for small weddings. Innkeeper Deborah McCutcheon can point you in the right direction for all the delectable restaurants located within walking distance of this B&B. This inn has also been cited as tops in beauty nationwide. The Hoyt House Bed & Breakfast, located in downtown Fernandina Beach, is an elegant 1905 Queen Anne style Mansion of gracious living of yesteryear. Known for its inviting guest rooms and sitting rooms, three-course gourmet breakfast, and luxurious amenities, this inn speaks of romantic elegance. Honeymoon packages include chilled champagne and fresh roses in the room, the use of the inn’s bicycles, and a large heated pool and spa. In addition, the Hoyt House has a private twobedroom, two-bathroom motor yacht available for full-day, overnight, or sunset cruises. In the mid-part of the island is the Amelia Hotel at the Beach. This is a family-run hotel, just steps from the beach and convenient to small restaurants and shops. “At our newly remodeled hotel, our spacious guest rooms and beach location will leave you with memories of great experiences, instead of great expenses,” says General Manager Holly Germano. It is a place to unwind, either poolside, at the beach across the street, or in the comfortable, well-appointed rooms. If you’re looking for a small, intimate lodging where you can fall asleep to the sound of the surf, perhaps the Elizabeth Point Lodge is right for you. With architecture reminiscent of Nantucket, it combines the full-service of a larger hotel with the quaintness of a bed and breakfast. Breakfast is served in a cozy sunroom, after which you can settle into the
rocking chairs on the oceanfront porch to finish the morning paper, before plunging into the beckoning waves. “We can provide honeymoon couples outstanding accommodations in a spacious oceanfront room with a private sunning porch, then match those accommodations with equally outstanding service provided by a staff which gives almost custom concierge service,” says owner David Caples. If luxury is your style, The RitzCarlton, Amelia Island is a lavish resort, renowned for its gorgeous grounds, luxurious appointments, and true Southern hospitality. Guests can relax in style and be pampered from sunup to sundown. Exquisite culinary creations, a fabulous spa, attentive staff, and an opulent atmosphere are what make The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island famous the world over. Whether you crave a secluded getaway or an-activity filled adventure —or a bit of both—Amelia Island has something for everyone. With its natural beauty and slow-paced Southern charm, it is the perfect place to enjoy those precious first days together as husband and wife.
