WE ARE VERY FOND OF WELCOMED BABIES
into their lives. The first is my brother, Joe, and his wife, Jennifer, who were blessed with a precious baby girl named Vera. Joe and Jenn weren’t married on Amelia, but they have visited often and love the island like residents. And last year, my cousin, Frank Basile, leader of the Crescendo Amelia Big Band, who lives in Fernandina Beach with his wife, Shannon, welcomed a beautiful baby girl named Allie. Both are charming young ladies (not that we’re prejudiced!), and they are being inundated with lots of love. Some of you may remember Frank and Shannon’s wedding, which was featured in the Fall 2013 issue of Amelia Island Weddings. What a pleasure it is to feature a couple’s wedding celebration, then join in the joy of their first child. We feel very privileged. It is a great blessing when a family goes from two to three (and beyond!). Both Joe and Frank and their wives are entering new chapters in their lives, where sleep is harder to come by and wallets get thinner, but smiles are wider, eyes brighter, and the future begins to take concrete shape. It’s been so much fun to go from wedding photos to baby photos that we are thinking about checking in with more of our recent couples to see if we can add some baby

photos to our website. When a wedding celebration is over, it sometimes feels like that high can never be topped. But it can be, and is, as the new family grows. As we have noted before, Amelia Island is now one of the top destinations wedding spots in the whole United States. When we first called it that a few years ago, our enthusiasm may have pushed us ahead of the pack, but today that reality is undeniable. All the reasons we cited then apply now, and then some. Amelia Island is blessed with beautiful and vibrant churches, miles of untouched beaches, panoramic marsh vistas, and an elegant backdrop of live oaks. All of these romantic settings can be enjoyed at the many wonderful venues—great and small—here on the island. A couple getting married on Amelia really can have the wedding of their dreams here, whatever their dream may be. In this issue, we have the pleasure of featuring some couples with deep roots on Amelia who return home with new friends to join old friends and family for a wonderful wedding weekend. away, so lots of friends from around the state traveled to celebrate their wedding, with many staying at Seaside Amelia Inn at Main Beach. A highlight for McKenzie was her bridal luncheon at Joe’s 2nd Street Bistro. “All of the influential women in my life were there,” she smiles, including McKenzie’s younger sister, Madison, who served as her junior maid of honor. The Fussells hosted the rehearsal dinner at the Fernandina Beach Woman’s Club. “This was an important venue for us,” says Pearce. “My parents wedding reception was there, and McKenzie participated in Little Women in high school. Together, we have many fond memories of the place.” After dinner, the couple snuck away to Sliders Seaside Grill for a last moment alone before the vows. On the wedding day, the ladies rose early for pampering at McKenzie’s grandmother’s home. The bridesmaids provided
the coffee, and the girls lounged in matching monogrammed robes eating breakfast, sharing old stories, and laughing together while having their hair primped and makeup applied to their young faces. When the bride was perfect in her lace, slim-fitting gown, Pam Bell photographed her on the eighteenth hole of Amelia Island Plantation’s Long Point Golf Club. “Instead of doing a first look with the groom, we did it with my dad.” McKenzie explains. “The photos of him seeing me for the first time are really sweet.” The ceremony was traditional, as the couple wished, and it was filled with romance and sincerity. “When I said my vows to you, I realized more than ever how much I loved you and that I wanted to be with you forever,” Pearce confides, a moment captured in one of Pam’s photos when he gracefully brushed a tear AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 15
from his eye. The couple’s pastor from their Tampa home church, Steve Morgan, traveled to officiate, friends of the couple played music and sang, and the newlywed’s mothers served communion. McKenzie is an artist and owns her own stationary design company called McKenzieFussellDesigns.com, and her special day was overflowing with creativity, including fun chalkboards which decorated the event. Ring-bearer Lincoln Fussell, the groom’s beloved nephew, carried a sign that read, “Here Comes Your Bride,” and everyone loved the large chalkboard bearing the ceremony’s program, all done in the bride’s calligraphy. When it was time for the party to get started, more of McKenzie’s signs welcomed guests to the newlywed’s “Happily Ever After,” invited them to enjoy games on either Team Bride or Team Groom, and presented the dinner menu, which included pulled pork, fried okra, shrimp and grits, a biscuit bar, and, of course “banana puddin’!” Guests sipped sweet tea and lemonade out of mason jars and enjoyed boiled peanuts while listening to the sounds of blue grass music. The bride’s cousin, Nettie Peters, made chocolate and vanilla cupcakes, served on burlap, with the couple’s small, monogrammed white cake crowning the presentation.

The décor of the evening matched the Southern menu flawlessly, with burlap table runners and silver buckets filled with green, pink, and white hydrangeas, inspired by the bride’s love for Lilly Pulitzer and designed by her mom, Paige Brown. The white-and-navy linens finished the presentation and paralleled the navy, wooden monogram of the couple’s married initials, which completed the mantle. Photos of the couple and their families from weddings past were fun memories all the guests enjoyed seeing. The couple used an engraved bible—with their new married name—as a guest book for everyone to highlight verses of Scripture and sign. That bible is now on their coffee table. As the Fussells day drew to a close, invitees received burlap-wrapped pecans thanking them for attending, and had fun waving sparklers as the couple departed. “We were proud for our friends to visit Amelia Island and share in our joy for this beautiful place,” the couple says. Today, the couple is settling into their life together, and they have lots of travel plans, including, of course, frequent visits to their home island!

MOLLY KAVANAUGH MET ELLIOTT OTTENHOFF IN APRIL 2011, AT A mutual friend’s birthday party in the historic Dupont Circle area of Washington D.C. A special bond was being formed, but the couple took it slow at first, courting, dating, and traveling together. When Molly asked Elliott to be her date when she attended her sister’s wedding in California, it was a big step for the two of them. The youngest of four children, Molly was eager to have Elliott meet her siblings and other family members. “Elliott integrated well into my family,” says Molly. “That’s when I knew he was the one.” Molly and Elliott became engaged in November 2013, during an intimate dinner for two. “I knew that we would eventually become engaged,” remembers Molly. “But at that time, Elliott was changing jobs, and we had a lot of things going 18 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
on. I thought the engagement would happen after everything settled down a bit.” However, one Friday evening when Molly had to work late, Elliott agreed to cook dinner for her. When she returned home, he had prepared a candlelit dinner with all her favorite dishes. “He surprised me as soon as I walked through the door and proposed immediately!” says Molly. “Not only was it a surprise, but, because it was just the two of us, we were really able to cherish that special moment. After dinner, we went to a neighborhood bar to celebrate.” When it became time to plan their wedding in September last year, Molly knew she wanted a destination wedding on Amelia Island, where her parents and grandparents lived. She loves the vintage charm of Fernandina Beach and planned her wedding with that in mind, with family members playing an important
part. “Nan Kavanaugh is my first cousin,” explains Molly. “Her husband, Chef Scotty Schwartz from 29 South Restaurant, created the dinner menu using influences from Elliott’s and my love of Nantucket, Chesapeake Bay, and Southern cuisine. My sister-in-law Lindy Kavanaugh, owner of Lindy’s Jewelry, provided the jewelry, with the exception of a necklace that was a family heirloom, a diamond brooch given to my mother’s mom from my grandfather.” In addition, Molly’s cousin, Catie Blalock, a graphic designer, created the couple’s wedding logo, menus for the reception, and their ceremony programs. Molly and Elliott held their rehearsal dinner at the Florida House Inn, where their extended family got to know each other better. They were married at the First Presbyterian Church, where AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 19
Molly’s great-great-grandfather used to be pastor. But beforehand, the couple spent an intimate hour at her parent’s historic home, for a “first look”. After the wedding, the couple, their wedding party, and guests went on to the reception at Walkers Landing at Amelia Island Plantation. Although Chef Scotty provided the food, the wait staff was supplied by Catering by Liz. “The Blues Factor Band provided the music,” says Molly. “Everyone danced until the band had to leave. The saxophonist used to play with the Reverend Al Green. The musicians were amazing, playing all the hits! Lisa Presnell from Coastal Engagements worked with us to plan the event. She had some great ideas. She suggested passed hors d’oeuvres, special cocktails, and a plated salad before the dinner, which was served buffet style. It all flowed so well. Brooke Raulerson from Artistic Florist did such a beautiful job with the flowers; we are so grateful to her. Elliott and I couldn’t have been happier with the way that everything turned out.” Molly and Elliott put off their honeymoon for a few months while Elliott was finishing school at Georgetown University, where he is getting his MBA. But finally, earlier this year, the two took an exciting and romantic trip to Thailand to celebrate their new life together. “Lots of love from our entire family was put into making our wedding day special,” remembers Molly. BETSY BALLEW AND JAKE MICHAELIS HAD MUTUAL FRIENDS WHO were close friends with Betsy’s parents. But, oddly enough, they had never met, since Betsy lived in Atlanta and Jake lived in Fernandina Beach. “My and Jake’s mutual friends, Cameron and Laura, are also close to my parents,” says Betsy. “They had been trying to set Jake and me up for awhile, and we just kept missing the opportunity. One night, he was out to dinner with Cameron, and Cameron pointed out my mom, who was with a group of her friends. They went over to say hello and Jake said, ‘I’m going to date your daughter.’ She jokingly said, ‘Well, she lives in Atlanta, so good luck with that!” But the couple did finally meet in 2012when Jake drove to Atlanta to take Betsy on their first date. “I still give Jake a hard time on how long it took him to take me out, but never once did I think of giving up on him.” 22 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
In the summer of 2013, Betsy moved to Amelia Island to be close to her boyfriend. Jake runs a merchant services business in Fernandina Beach, and, at the time, Betsy was working as a first grade teacher. That same summer, on August 23, she and Jake made plans to meet at a friend’s waterfront home for a romantic evening alone. When Betsy arrived, she was met by rose petals and candles, and of course, an engagement ring from Jake. “But the biggest surprise was when Jake took me to The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island,” remembers Betsy. “He had planned an engagement party, and had invited all our friends and family!” While looking for a venue for their wedding, Betsy and Jake fell in love with the Ribault Club on Fort George Island, known for its historic elegance and Southern charm. Located in Jacksonville, Fort George Island is also home to St. George
Episcopal Church. When Betsy and Jake met with Lorna Meehan, the event planner at the Ribault Club, everything fell into place. “We loved the church so much, and we really wanted to get married there,” says Betsy. “But there wasn’t room for the 225 guests we were inviting. Lorna suggested that we hold our wedding there with our family, and then have a “blessing” ceremony at the Ribault Club right before the reception. That way, all of our guests could share in the ceremony.” The night before the wedding, Betsy and Jake held a rehearsal dinner for 100 of their closest friends and family members at Walkers Landing at Amelia Island Plantation. “Jake’s mom, Sherry, and his sister, Krishna, decorated Walkers Landing for our rehearsal dinner,” says Betsy. “They met with Ken from Dottie B’s, who created décor that brought out the natural beauty of the venue. Nicole’s on the River provided the catering, which included oysters and barbecue. And the Blue Dogs, original country-rock artists from Charleston, South Carolina, provided the music.” For the evening wedding reception at the Ribault Club, Betsy and Jake worked with Beachview Tent Rentals, which provided a clear tent for the evening in hopes that guests could enjoy a night sky full of stars. “Our goal was to hold as much of the event outside, so we had a dance floor set up outside with the band, Atlantic Groove Factory,” says Betsy. “We had food stations set up outside and some indoors, too. There was a grilling station, where chefs cooked skewers of chicken, fish, and vegetables, and offered them to our guests.” The wedding ceremony was held at 5 p.m. at the church, then Betsy, Jake, and their sixteen-person wedding party and friends met at the Ribault Club for the “blessing.” The Peck Gospel singers sang “Georgia on My Mind,” since that’s where Betsy and Jake first began their relationship. The reception ended at 11 p.m., and then school buses took the guests to an after-party at The RitzCarlton, Amelia Island. “It was such an enchanting evening,” says Betsy. “I wanted our wedding to be as much fun for our guests as it was for us. And I think it was!”

Ashley & Tony AMELIA ISLAND WILLIAMS HOUSE By Julie Simmons Photography by Jordan Voight “DADDY, HERE COMES MOMMY,” READ THE WOODEN SIGN CARRIED by five-year-old Ashton before his mom, bride Ashley Dickert, appeared to her husband-to-be, Tony Anderson. “We were thrilled to host this cute couple at Amelia Island Williams House,” says Innkeeper Deborah McCutchen. Ashley explained that the couple was looking for a destination wedding not too far from their home outside Valdosta, Georgia. “I found the Williams House online, and the historic charm sold me!,” Ashley smiles. “It was the first and only venue we considered, and it was idea—small, intimate, and the innkeepers were so hospitable, providing everything we needed.” Amelia Island boasts fantastic large wedding venues, but oftentimes, couples want a petite event centered on their love, and this was exactly the case for the Andersons. The couple met through a mutual friend seven years before Tony’s proposal at sunset on the porch of their home in the country, and they wished for their wedding to parallel their engagement – simply perfect. “We had ten guests. My sister was the maid of honor and my husband’s best friend the best man,” describes the bride. The couple said, “I do,” on September 20, 2014 at 2 p.m. followed by a dessert reception at Williams House. The Williams House took care of all the details, right down to the one-layer white buttercream wedding cake decorated with flowers. “It was great how Deborah made it easy for us, and our room was so gorgeous!” “All couples want to have a memorable wedding, and budget is almost always a concern,” explains Deborah. “We think having a wedding at Williams House can provide a dream setting and,

for this special moment of a lifetime, a place that the couple will always remember.” Ashley was thrilled with her wedding, and most important was having her loved ones surrounding her. “I lost my dad at a young age, and Mrs. Lola and ‘Pop’ ran the daycare where I stayed when I was just a few months old. They became my adopted grandparents, and one of my favorite parts of the wedding was having Pop give me away,” Ashley reflects. Artistic Florist designed the gorgeous vibrant pink, ivory, and green bridal bouquet, which was completed with Ashley’s late father’s wedding ring. “It’s beautiful when the two families come together and spend a weekend getting to know one another,” says Deborah. “It’s my favorite part of a bed-and-breakfast event. Ashley and Tony made the most of every moment with their family and friends. The inn and grounds are so unique and beautiful that you don’t need a lot
of ‘extra stuff,’ and therefore, the couple can save money to spend on other things that are important to starting their life together.” Ashley and Tony also appreciated the unique shopping and dining Amelia Island offers its visitors. “Friday night we had fun eating at Falcon’s Nest at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort with the best man, and after the wedding, we strolled Centre Street, and then had a wonderful dinner at Brett’s Waterway Café.” Some of the wedding guests stayed at the Hampton Inn & Suites overlooking the harbor, and they adored being in the heart of the Historic District. “Unfortunately, it rained on our wedding day, so we had to delay our horse and carriage ride,” Ashley explains. But the delay turned out just right. On Sunday morning, the couple boarded a carriage operated by Cyndi Myers’ Amelia Island Carriages and enjoyed a delightful tour of downtown Fernandina Beach. It was the perfect finale to the perfect Amelia Island wedding. AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 25

CORTLIN PHILLIPS AND LANCE CROFT MET DURING THEIR SENIOR year at the University of Florida in 2012. Cortlin was sitting outside the library at the Plaza of Americas having lunch with her girlfriends, and Lance was eavesdropping on their conversation. The girlfriends saw that Lance was listening to her, and they took it upon themselves to write down Cortlin’s phone number and give it to him. The rest, as they say, is history. Lance grew up on Amelia Island. He attended Fernandina Beach High School and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. It was only natural that he and Cortlin would want to hold their wedding and reception on Amelia Island, and, on November 15, 2014, they tied the knot. Cortlin and her family are from Tampa, but they have extended family all over the country, even in South Korea. The couple felt that having a destination 26 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
wedding on Amelia Island would be a treat for their guests, a true vacation getaway and the perfect place to celebrate the start of their life together. Cortlin and Lance wanted all their guests to be part of their weekend wedding events, so they came up with a unique idea for their rehearsal dinner. “We had dinner at the Falcon’s Nest with our wedding party, and then we invited all of our guests to come over later for a toast and to spend time with each other before the wedding the next day. It was a great party!” Guests stayed at various places throughout the island, including the Omni, and other hotels and bed-and-breakfast inns. They invited one hundred fifty-eight people to attend the wedding, with the ceremony at First Presbyterian Church and the reception at Walkers Landing at Amelia Island Plantation.
The ceremony was held at 3 p.m., with a cocktail reception at 4:30 p.m. and dinner at 5:30 p.m. “We wanted to keep our wedding classical and traditional,” says Cortlin. “We love the church, and it has so much history. But we also wanted everything to be vibrant and alive. So we chose colorful tones and brilliant flowers. It was beautiful.” Cortlin and Lance hired Carol Burns, event coordinator at the Omni Resort at Amelia Island Plantation, to help with the arrangements. Artistic Florist provided the flowers, and Robert Max handled the photography. “We had the Omni do all the food, and they were so accommodating,” remembers Cortlin. “They let us have a split entrée so that Lance and I could have both steak and grouper. During the cocktail hour, waiters passed hors d’oeuvres, and then guests were treated to a sit-down dinner. The food was excellent.” A talented family friend hand-painted 200 wine glasses, which were used at the reception, and each guest took their glass home as a remembrance of the wedding. After a joyful evening of dancing and merriment, Cortlin and Lance got some muchneeded rest before setting off for their honeymoon in St. Thomas and St. Mark’s the next day. It seems that the Plaza of Americas at the University of Florida, where Cortlin and Lance first met, is famous for bringing couples together. Many celebrities claim to have first met at that very same spot. Cortlin and Lance believe that being at the right place at the right time, with a little help from their friends, is what brought them together. Cortlin and Lance now live in Tampa, where she has gone back to school to become a nurse, and he works at an engineering firm.

Fernandina Beach Golf Club By Karen Miller THE FERNANDINA BEACH GOLF CLUB DEDICATED ITS NEW CLUBHOUSE in early 2000, and the renovated clubhouse transformed Fernandina Beach Golf Club into one of the finest municipal golf facilities in the country. In addition to their fully-stocked Golf Shop, visitors can also enjoy great dining opportunities, as well as a hospitable and relaxing lounge area. Last year, the Club went through an extensive renovation, including new floors, both tile and carpeting, along with contemporary restrooms. Brad Little is assistant general manager at the Fernandina Beach Golf Club, and he can suggest a wide variety of wedding options. “Our fairway is an exquisite place to hold an outdoor wedding,” says Little. “Guests can then hold a cocktail reception outside, or come inside the club for dinner and dancing.” The Club has a special dance floor that can be installed, and they provide linens and set up. “Often a bride will provide us with centerpieces and other table decorations, and we can set those things up for her. bridal jewelry TO COMPLEMENT YOUR STYLE By Lindy Kavanaugh A BRIDE’S ENGAGEMENT RING IS UNDOUBTEDLY THE most important accessory that she will wear on her wedding day. That does not mean, however, that brides should miss the opportunity to adorn themselves with other fabulous jewels in order to look their best on the big day. Most brides will never spend more on one dress than they do on their wedding dress, so when it comes to choosing the jewelry you will wear on your wedding day, make sure it complements your dress, as well as your own features and personal style. Jewelry can be very sentimental, and that can also play a role in helping you decide what to wear. When trying to choose earrings, be sure to consider the way you will wear your hair. For example, if you intend to wear your hair up, a long earring is more visible and can add a little sparkle near your face. On the other hand, a chandelierstyle or longer earring can get lost in long hair, so it’s best to go with a stud or small hoop when your hair is down. your jewelry with care, so if you do decide on long earrings or something large, it might be best to forego a necklace. Necklaces can make the overall look a bit busy, so be sure to try several styles with the dress. Whether the dress has a boatneck, sweetheart neckline, spaghetti straps, or if it’s strapless, wear something that’s going to flatter your physical features. Bracelets are always a great piece of jewelry to add on because they can bring the eye to the engagement ring, break up a lot of exposed skin, and they tend to be more subtle. Do use caution when choosing bracelets because they can cause a snag in silk or get caught on gorgeous lace more so than other jewelry items. Many brides look to pearls, diamonds, or crystals for their wedding jewelry, but don’t be afraid to add a little pop of color! My dear friend will be married next month, and we have chosen a beautiful pair of Morganite and diamond earrings to tie in the blush tones of her bridesmaid dresses, as well as the flowers in her bouquet. Also, the bride’s tradition of wearing something blue can easily be incorporated into your wedding jewelry. When budget is an issue, costume jewelry is the best option. Fine jewelry is, however, something that can be worn time and time again. Many brides are able to select jewelry items that were purchased specifically to wear with their wedding dress, but they have been able to transition them into their everyday jewelry wardrobe. A popular choice of jewelry is often a borrowed piece, or something that has been handed down. And don’t forget the possibility of receiving a wedding gift—like some jewelry—from your groom. Of course, that would be the perfect thing to wear! If you are still uncertain about what would be the best jewelry to wear on your wedding day, stick with the classics. A traditional strand of pearls or a diamond pendant, worn with a pair of pearl or diamond studs, is a traditional choice that will always be in fashion. For the traditionalists in the crowd, don’t panic, the designers have options for you that are as beautiful as ever, beginning with an elegant array of shoulder options. A bit of a surprise are the spaghetti strap dresses, which provide stability and comfort without too much coverage. Sometimes the spaghetti or thin straps will include jewels or lace embellishments. One fun addition to sleeves this season are shoulder streamers, whether long, short, wide, or skinny! Expected this season was the return of long sleeves, and this is presented in airy, lace options, as well as in full coverage with material that parallels the bodice. Speaking of material, designers are experimenting with fabric. Hayley Paige has offered a leather dress, Romona Keveza a stardust lace skirt, and puckered jacquard and cotton pique are a few additional adaptations for this season. On the not-so-traditional side, plunging necklines are very popular. Backless gowns like we’ve seen for the past year or so remain daring options, but if you feel like something new, try the double-take style with a gown that includes subtle illusion detailing, perhaps in lace, along the arms and necklines. Some have called it a conservative way to show more skin. On the color side, pops of non-white are here and there this season, with dusty blue being the most prevalent. Finally, girls, here’s my favorite: you can have your cake and wear it, too! How about cascading tiers, just like a cake, on your gown? They are presented in ruffles, fringe, and all sorts of styles both symmetrical and asymmetrical that will add serious volume to your skirt. They’re oh-so fun, yet classy! “A long marriage is two people trying to dance a duet and two solos at the same time,” said journalist and novelist Anne Taylor Fleming. FLOWERS AND DECOR Candelabras and tall vases are ideal for large rooms and spaces with high ceilings. Expect to see floral centerpieces that are towering and dripping with crystals and jewels. Also, a natural handpicked look is also increasingly popular. Traditional hand-tied wild flower bouquets are a romantic and effortless style, perfect for boho chic and garden receptions. Mason jars filled with wild flowers hanging from shepherd’s hooks lining the ceremony aisle can offer a simple yet natural touch. Expect to see a wide range of trends that are distinctive and very different. COLOR Radiant orchid remains a hot color. Purple has always been a popular wedding color, and it offers a variety of shades for floral, line, and attire. Ombre has become very popular and can be seen everywhere, from dresses, cakes, flowers, decor, hairstyles, and even nail polish. French for “shaded or graduated in tone,” ombre is a gradual change from one color or shade into the next. There could be just one color or twenty colors, all fading and softening into the other. MORNING WEDDINGS Morning weddings tend to be more cost effective that afternoon and evening events. We will see more brunch style receptions in 2015. STATIONERY Soft light pastels will be hot this year, with brighter hues becoming less popular. For fall and winter weddings, bold reds, burgundys and even grassy greens will re-appear as the really traditional looks takes hold once again. Many couples who have children are choosing stationery designs that look like the children are inviting the guests. An adorable way to include the children and a truly sweet touch. SEATING ARRANGEMENTS The traditional round reception table is being replaced by long, elegant banquet-style seating. It presents a more formal feel to the reception and allows guests to socialize easier. This look is also perfect for the new trend of tall floral centerpieces. Assigned seating is also becoming more popular as couples realize that they actually are doing their guests a favor by choosing their seat for them. Æowers & décor Textures and new colors are drawing lots of attention from brides this season. By Julie Simmons BRIDES, DID YOU KNOW THERE IS AN OFFICIAL COLOR for 2015? Each year, Pantone Inc., a corporation headquartered in New Jersey, hosts a secret meeting in Europe of representatives from various nations’ color standards groups. After two days of debate, they choose a color for the year ahead that they feel best expresses the spirit of the time. This year, the official color is Marsala. “Have you seen Pantone’s color of the year?” asks Brooke Raulerson, AIFD, CFD, FSMD, owner of Amelia Island Wedding Flowers of Artistic Florist. “It’s going to be so hot! It’s a deep, woodsy red that pairs well with lavender, peach, creams, and sage, citrus greens.” So how do trending colors work with natural flowers? flowers are not even flowers at all,” says Brooke. “They’re foliage with an abundance of textures —waxy, dark greens and frilly accents like feather acacia and nandina.” Amber Marvin, owner of Island Flower & Garden, confirms that she is seeing the same things from brides. “We are designing a lot more with interesting and textural foliage,” she notes. “Greenery is making a big comeback after the solid flower designs that we have seen for many years. For instance, gorgeous magnolia, gunni eucalyptus, rosemary, scented geranium and other trailing foliage are on the orders. Texture has always been an important element in design, and we are seeing brides wanting more!” The past few seasons, we’ve seen brides lean toward rustic designs, and Amber reiterates this is still popular. “The wildflower garden is huge this year. It ties in directly with the greenery trend we are seeing. No formal shapes are needed in this design trend. Wild and romantic shapes are used, combining wild flowers with more formal flowers in a non-formal way.” Brooke says she is seeing the same thing, but perhaps with a bit more elegance than in seasons past. “We are seeing more bold texture contrast, with the use of gold and silver accents beside bark and wood textures. And branches are being used to create asymmetry in centerpieces.” Brides are making this season’s rustic unique, trading burlap for sparkly linens, chandeliers, and even copper chairs. And don’t forget, brides, that branches and vines don’t wither and wilt! Brooke explains this makes vines, twisted branches, and even preserved flowers smart choices for a bouquet you want to preserve. “Incorporating fresh and preserved real flowers on the day of the wedding yields the benefit of having your bouquet look as colorful and vibrant as the day you walked down the aisle for years to come—without spending a fortune!” The recent popularity of incorporating personal memorabilia into the bouquet continues, and it’s more creative than ever! “Lately we’ve attached a bride’s grandmother’s emerald earrings to paper flowers we made from her address book. We completed it using her grandfather’s World War II shoulder-medal as a bouquet wrap,” says Amber. ”We also incorporated guitar strings from the groom’s guitar as accents. Adding these special mementos in an interesting and special way is always appealing.” As you plan your wedding décor, what is the spirit of this time in your life?
