LETTER FROM THE

In every issue of AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS, we have the pleasure of sharing one of the most important events in anyone’s life: their wedding day. It gives us a great deal of satisfaction to present in these pages a few of the wonderful couples who began their lives together here on Amelia Island. These beautiful stories are always inspiring. With all that Amelia Island has to offer, every couple who marries here on our little island paradise is able to celebrate their wedding in almost any style they can imagine! As we like to note, Amelia Island is one of the top destinations wedding spots in the entire United States, and it comes as no surprise. Amelia Island is blessed with beautiful churches and stunning natural beauty, so couples can enjoy an oceanfront ceremony or reception, panoramic marsh vistas that run out to the Intracoastal Waterway—which can include an unforgettable sunset in the early evening—or beautifully manicured golf course greenery with a backdrop of elegant oaks. All of these romantic settings can be enjoyed at the many wonderful venues here. One reason why Amelia Island is such a popular place to get married is that a couple can really have the wedding of their dreams here, whatever their dream may be.

In this issue, we are happy to present to you once again the special stories of a few couples who created their own scrapbook of unforgettable memories on Amelia Island. Like every newlywed couple, they will leave behind their old lives and embark on an exciting new life together, a great adventure that will bring untold joys and challenges. The moment is full of hope and optimism, and so full of the joy of sharing with good friends and family that the beauty of the occasion always shines through in every wedding, in whatever style suits the couple best. The weddings that we have the pleasure of presenting in Amelia Island Weddings Magazine often fall into two categories: destination weddings and more intimate affairs, sometimes featuring couples with a local connection. Our cover story presents a colorful, multi-day wedding for a Chicago couple that honored their two cultures while also celebrating American traditions. Another couple featured in this issue resides in Jacksonville Beach and had heard great things about Fernandina Beach, while still another had attended a wedding years ago at the Amelia Island venue where they decided to celebrate their own wedding. The other two weddings in this issue have local connections, including the daughter of a well-known local couple and a bride who vacationed here as a child. We hope you will enjoy reading this issue of Amelia Island Weddings as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Whether you’re a resident, a frequent visitor, or a newcomer to Amelia, we trust that our magazine will inspire you to imagine the extraordinary wedding possibilities available to you on this beautiful 13-mile-long barrier island.

AND THAT’S NOT ALL Of course, there are lots of options to choose from when you’re considering an island wedding. On Amelia, there are many lovely bed & breakfast inns that can provide an elegant and intimate setting for your special day. The circa 1856 Amelia

Island Williams House on South Ninth Street in downtown Fernandina Beach is owned and operated by Chris and Maria Page. Beautifully landscaped gardens and a spacious courtyard are the perfect venue for a wedding celebration whether intimate or grand. Smaller weddings and receptions can also be held in the elegant dining room and Victorian parlor. Chris and Maria’s attention to detail has created a special place for an island wedding and they are ready to help you with all the arrangements. The beautifully restored Victorian is also on a quiet street downtown within easy range of all the restaurants, shops, and sightseeing that the downtown has to offer. Also in the heart of historic downtown Fernandina Beach is The Florida House Inn on South Third Street, the oldest continually operating hotel in Florida. The Florida House Inn has undergone a painstaking historic restoration and features beautiful heart pine floors, a 350-year old live oak tree, an immaculate courtyard and gardens, original fireplaces, string lighting throughout the courtyard, a beautiful mermaid fountain, and 17 luxurious guest rooms. The courtyard can accommodate weddings of up to 200 people, and the inside dining room is perfect for rehearsal dinners and dinner events, all featuring the Inn’s delicious Southern cuisine. The Mermaid Bar offers live entertainment and it is a great spot to enjoy after the ceremony or reception. Emily Saltmarsh is ready to help you with all of your wedding planning needs. For an intimate, romantic gathering in downtown Fernandina Beach, step into the Hoyt House, an elegant 1905 Queen Anne style ten-bedroom en suite mansion. The manicured grounds, softly illuminated by lights hanging from the 500-year-old moss-laden oak tree, create a breathtaking evening ambience. Their grounds, gazebo, and poolside make a wonderful location for a rehearsal dinner, ceremony, or cocktail reception. Walk indoors through 11foot double French doors, where three gracious sitting rooms await, along with a baby grand piano playing your favorite compositions. Weekend guests enjoy luxurious shower gels and soaps, lush robes and wraps, a three-course gourmet breakfast, and lounging in the terry-covered chaise lounge chairs by the pool and spa. Innkeeper Tracey Escalante says: “Come home to The Hoyt House. Located on South 2nd Street, this restaurant is a great place for a rehearsal dinner or small reception. The Crab Trap has been a local favorite for 26 years. Owned and operated by the Germano family, The Crab Trap’s nautical décor, friendly service, and great food make it the perfect place for a special Fernandina Beach celebration. Lily & Rajesh O M N I A M E L I A I S L A N D P L A N TAT I O N R E S O R T By Karen Miller

Photography by Our Labor of Love

Rajesh Paryani met Lily Mei through Match, an online dating service, while living in Chicago. Lily had lived there since 2005 for medical school and residency, and Raj moved there for work in 2012. For those not familiar with Match, the company’s algorithm uses a variety of factors to suggest possible mates. Luckily, the algorithm was able to accomplish something the couple probably wouldn’t have been able to do, as Lily and Raj had never met despite living in adjacent buildings on the same street! Raj reached out to Lily, and after aligning their busy schedules, they planned their first date at a neighborhood café. Their mutual appreciation for each other’s sense of humor, along with a shared passion for food, beaches, and Netflix, laid the 14 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

foundation for a beautiful relationship. Raj took almost two-anda-half years to propose, but he knew very early in the relationship that Lily was going to be the one for him. Thankfully, she felt the same way, and she said ‘yes!’ in late December 2014. The couple settled on Amelia Island as a perfect wedding locale, particularly the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort. “Omni has the resort vibe we were looking for,” says Lily. “The venues are spread out, and guests are able to enjoy many activities and different settings. And the weather on Amelia Island is just beautiful.” Raj is Indian and Lily is Chinese, and the couple’s greatest wish was to join their cultures together with American traditions to create the wedding of their dreams. “An Indian wedding usually

lasts about a week,” laughs Raj. “We needed to create a modern version that would fit into two-and-a-half days. Our three main events consisted of the Sangeet on Friday night, the Barat, which is the procession before the wedding on Saturday, the Valarma, in which the couple prepares for their ceremony, the ceremony itself held at the Mandap, and then the reception, which was held later in the evening.” The Sangeet, an Indian wedding tradition, is a musical party. Raj and Lily’s was held at Walkers Landing. It’s a celebration of the union of not only the couple, but the bonding of both families,

and a place where the families can mingle in a fun environment. Guests were encouraged to wear their most colorful clothing and dance the night away, dining on a variety of Indian, Chinese, and American dishes. The next morning, Raj was led to the marriage venue in a procession known as the Baraat, where he meets Lily for Varmala, a ritual where they exchange garlands to signify the start of their marriage rituals. The Mandap serves as an altar for Indian weddings, the stage for which guests and family witness the couple wed. AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 15

The Mandap consists of four pillars, symbolizing the four parents who worked hard to raise their children. The bride and groom exchange vows, feed each other sweets, and perform other rituals that seal their union. Although the wedding was Indian-inspired, the couple also celebrated American traditions, with a total of 24 bridesmaids, groomsmen, and ushers. The entire ceremony was held at Oak Point Lawn, featuring Spanish moss-covered oaks and dazzling views of the marsh. After the wedding ceremony, there was a break in the day, allowing the bride and groom to rest and giving their guests a bit of free time to relax. The reception was held at the Omni’s Magnolia Garden Ballroom, complete with fireworks, cocktails, and more dancing for their nearly 400 guests. “My mother, Geeta, planned the entire wedding, along with Brittany Ellis Cole from Eventrics Weddings and Sune Holt, the Omni’s wedding coordinator. It was a lot of work and they did a fantastic job!” says Raj. “Our guests came from everywhere,” says Lily. “India, China, Florida, California, Chicago, and 16 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

New York. It was amazing to have all of our friends and families together in one place for our wedding. Most of our guests used our destination wedding as a vacation for themselves, and nearly all stayed on Amelia Island for at least the long weekend. On Sunday, husband and wife enjoyed brunch with their guests at the Ocean View Terrace Room, overlooking the beach with spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean, before leaving on their honeymoon to Tuscany, Italy. After their whirlwind, romantic wedding and honeymoon, Raj and Lily returned to Chicago, where Lily is a physician, and Raj works in finance. AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 17

Angie & Ed THE FLORIDA HOUSE INN By Julie Simmons

Photography by Stefanie Keeler Photography

It’s all about who you know, it is often said, and for Angie and Ed Gil, that was exactly the case. Angie and Ed met with the help of mutual friends, and the rest, as it is also said, is history. At Thanksgiving a few years later at the bride’s family’s home in Atlanta, Ed got down on one knee and surprised everyone with a proposal. When it was time to where to celebrate their wedding, this Jacksonville Beach couple once again turned to their friends. “A friend and co-worker of mine suggested I look at Fernandina Beach, and specifically The Florida House Inn,” remembers Angie. After a day trip to Amelia Island, the deal was sealed. “Having my wedding inside the church was very important to me,” says Angie. “St. Michael Catholic Church is so beautiful, and its proximity to the reception venue is perfect, so our guests would not have to travel too far.” 18 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

Their next stop on their day trip after St. Michael’s was The Florida House Inn, where the couple dined at Leddy’s Porch, named for Major Leddy, who purchased the inn with his wife after the Civil War and began running the property as a hotel. “We fell in love with the history and beauty of the Florida House,” says Angie. “The foliage and flowers, the courtyard gardens, and the upstairs wrap-around porch—it has that earthy feel that I wanted for my special day, as does all of Amelia Island, with its water and natural beauty.” All of their guests agreed, and they enjoyed their time on the island at the Hampton Inn, Omni Amelia Island Plantation, and of course, The Florida House Inn, the oldest continuously operated hotel in the state of Florida. The gentleman took advantage of a great day at Fernandina

Beach Golf Club. However, the favorite part of the pre-wedding festivities was undoubtedly the rehearsal dinner at La Mancha Restaurant. “I am from Puerto Rico and Ed’s family is from Cuba,” Angie shares. “Throughout our event, we sought to pay homage to our families, and the Spanish food—even the paella— at La Mancha was perfect! The staff was very accommodating, and the private room was perfect for our celebration.” On a beautiful fall afternoon, the couple said, “I do!” Their guests enjoyed the cocktail hour while the couple had fun at their photo session with Stefanie Keeler Photography. “Ed’s uncle drove his red vintage 1950s Chevrolet Bel Air up from Miami, and we had so much fun taking pictures with it beside the unique Fernandina Beach architecture.” The couple also smiled for the camera by the Fernandina Beach waterways and pier. The 140 guests eagerly waited to welcome the newlyweds to the celebration and kickoff the dinner and dancing. The Florida House Inn prepared a low country boil with greens and cornbread, where everyone enjoyed a taste of the South—a flavor the chefs at this venue have perfected! “The wedding coordinator at The Florida House was super attentive and accommodating with our timeline and requests,” says Angie. A friend of the couple served as DJ, while everyone danced into the night. The crowd continued with an after-party next door at the Green Turtle Tavern, but not before a special gift the couple prepared: signature coffee cups imprinted with their new married name and filled with Puerto Rican coffee and Cuban sugar! The couple left under a shower of bubbles and cheers from their loved ones to a night at Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort and a spectacular honeymoon of hiking, snorkeling, and relaxing on the island of Dominica in the Caribbean. In their first married year together, Angie and Ed are all smiles about “who they know” – Mr. & Mrs. Gil! AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 19

Karen & Asa T H E R I B A U LT C L U B By Karen Miller Photography by Bri Cibene Photography

When Karen Gray and Asa Rees went on their first date, they knew they were going to get married. They had met their freshman year in college through mutual friends, and they became good friends themselves. When Karen decided to attend another school, she and Asa developed a long-distance friendship, writing letters to each other for three-and-a-half years. Not only did their friendship grow, but the two also became close to one another’s families. By the time they considered dating in 2015, they were already in love. “We were so invested in each other at that time, it was obvious we were going to get married,” shares Karen. “We had so many common interests—music, concerts, reading, hiking, and hanging out with our friends. We did everything together! We were best friends.” Asa had been making plans to pop the question, but then changed his mind and asked Karen to marry him a week earlier. “I had been in a car accident and I was really shaken up,” says Karen. “So Asa took me to a private lake, and that’s where we got engaged. It was so special and intimate.” Karen and Asa celebrated their wedding at the historic Ribault Club on Fort George Island late last summer. A place known to be as simple as it is elegant, The Ribault Club caught the eye of the couple when they attended a friend’s wedding on its sprawling, waterfront lawn. “We fell in the love with the Ribault Club,” confirms Karen. “We developed a close connection to Angie Martino, their wedding planner. She was such a good listener, and she knew exactly the kind of wedding we wanted.” The Ribault Club was originally established in 1928 as a playground for the affluent, and it has been the site of many memorable parties and events over the years, hosting foreign dignitaries, captains of industry, and members of high society. Today, it is a sought-after venue for weddings and social events. 20 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

Karen and Asa wanted a Christian wedding, with worship and communion. “We wanted our guests to feel like they were part of our family,” says Karen. “Our wedding was intimate, earthy, organic, celebratory, and truly meaningful. In fact, the ceremony was our favorite part of the wedding celebration.” Because the wedding took place in August, the couple decided to hold the ceremony inside, setting up lights, tables, and lawn games outside for guests who wanted to enjoy the Southern charm of Ribault’s moss-draped live oaks and waterfront vista. A very special part of the wedding for Karen was walking down the aisle with her father and stepfather, two of the most special men in her life. “That meant a lot to me,” says Karen. “Also, one of our closest friends, an artist, painted on a canvas during the ceremony. Afterward, she gave us the painting as a wedding gift!” “Another very special part of the day was including a silver tray that belonged to my great-grandmother, who had recently passed away. We used it for the reception.” The reception was catered by Davoli’s, a family-owned business from Jacksonville, and consisted of various food stations, meticulously presented and served to their 150 guests. Karen’s and Asa’s guests, most of whom came from out of town, enjoyed the couple’s wedding as a true destination experience, taking advantage of the many activities that Amelia Island has to offer. They booked accommodations all over the island, including the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort and several boutique hotels. Some of their vendors included Bri Cibene Photography, flowers by The Wilding Collective, wedding cake by Alley Cakes Dessert Company, and hair and makeup by Feathers & Foil. “Our vendors were top-notch,” says Karen. “We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect wedding experience!” After the wedding, Karen and Asa honeymooned in the mountains in Franklin, North Carolina, before driving to Colorado, where they now live and work. The two best friends love their Rocky Mountain oasis, but dream of coming back to Amelia Island very soon to relive their very special wedding day. AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 21

Jessica & Josh SLIDERS SEASIDE GRILL By Karen Miller

Photography by Confidence Photography

When Hurricane Matthew battered Florida in October last year, Jessica Cheaves and Josh Myers figured this was the end of their wedding plans. The hurricane hit Amelia Island just one week before their beach wedding was planned at Sliders Seaside Grill, and the Georgia couple had no idea what kind of damage they would be dealing with. “Miraculously, our wedding went on as planned!” says Jessica. “There was some debris and a few small issues we had to deal with, but in the end, all of our guests showed up, and our wedding was as perfect as we could have ever imagined it!” Jessica and Josh first met at a cookout in 2010, when Josh was dating someone else. Several years later, Jessica saw on Facebook that he had posted his new status as “single” and she messaged him with an invitation to dinner. Some time would pass before 22 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

Josh finally took her up on her offer, and several months later, they became engaged. “We had our first date on February 22, 2015,” says Josh. “We knew immediately that we were meant for each other. We talked about everything, from growing up together in the town of Mableton, Georgia, and all about our families and friends. We had even attended the same high school, although we were apart in age. We had a lot in common!” Josh proposed on the beach at Gulf Shores, Alabama, and Jessica said, “Yes!” As romantic as their engagement was, Josh and Jessica’s wedding was destined to be on Amelia Island, a place where Jessica had spent many happy vacations with her family. “I always knew I would get married on Amelia Island,” shares Jessica, “and particularly at Sliders Seaside Grill. It was our favorite

place to eat, and I had so many fond memories there.” Josh had never been to Fernandina Beach, so Jessica took him to visit for a long weekend, and once there, he agreed – this coastal community was the perfect place to hold their wedding ceremony and reception. Jessica’s mother, Cynthia Ayres, was instrumental in planning the wedding, along with Todd Smith of Amelia Island Beach Weddings. “My mother knew everything that had to be done to have the wedding of my dreams. She found all the vendors, made all the arrangements, and worked with Todd for our ceremony on the beach,” says Jessica. “I’m a true Southern girl. I wanted our wedding to reflect the ‘sweet’ side of life in the South. We wanted our family and friends to feel warm and welcome.” Jessica’s and Josh’s celebration began on Friday night, with a rehearsal dinner at The Surf. Guests stayed at various locales around the island, and they had plenty of opportunities to enjoy the many activities the island has to offer. The wedding ceremony was held on Saturday at 5 p.m., officiated by Josh’s dad, Philip Myers, who lead them in a unity sand ceremony. Josh and Jessica had recently lost grandparents, so Josh wrote the grandparents’ initials behind the archway where the wedding took place, a bittersweet addition to their ceremony.

The wedding party was barefoot on the beach, but that didn’t mean it was a casual affair. Jessica’s wedding dress was a vintage design from LaRaines Bridal, and her bridesmaids’ dresses were from Bridals by Lori, both located in Atlanta. Her hair and makeup were provided locally by A Janet Lynn Salon. When the guests headed to Sliders’ banquet room and balcony for the reception, they were treated to a glorious sit-down feast of fresh seafood and lots of Southern favorites, along with champagne. But Jessica’s favorite part of the meal was a wedding cake table featuring five different Southern cakes, created with love by Ms. Carolyn’s. DJ Carlton McGee provided music that the couple chose themselves, and Jessica remembers how much she and Josh and their guests loved the vibe and the view throughout the evening. “There’s no place better for this ocean view, along with the charming, beachy atmosphere at Sliders. Our wedding was exactly as we hoped it would be.” Jessica and Josh have settled into married life back in Acworth, Georgia, but they are planning a trip back Amelia Island this summer. “We’ll always come back here,” says Josh. “We’re making our own memories now.” AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 23

Ashton & Andrew L AT Y N ’ S L A N D - N By Julie Simmons

Photography by Danielle George Photography

When you’ve planned close to 200 weddings in the past year at the castle of Cinderella herself, where do you host your own fairytale? Amelia Island, of course! Ashton and Andrew Hunter met in Orlando, where Ashton was working as a Disney Fairytale Wedding Planner. “When Andy and I met, we immediately connected on our aspirations, dreams, and what we wanted for the future,” Ashton shares. Andy surprised her when he proposed on a random Tuesday night. “I came home from work to flowers, wine, and a table of gifts —a seashell from our first walk on the beach, a memento from our first trip to the Disney parks, and a card detailing each item and its meaning. I turned around and hugged him, and he said, ‘You forgot one thing.’ When I looked back at the table, there was a card that said, ‘Marry Me?’” 24 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

The wedding planner quickly got busy planning. “We knew we’d be married in my hometown,” says Ashton. When she found Laytn’s Land-n, with its waterfront and beautiful oak trees, she knew it was the place. As guests began coming into town for the wedding celebration, the couple, who had recently moved back to Amelia Island, was proud to show off all the fun things to do on Amelia. “We love boating and jet skiing, and we spent a lot of days with our family and friends on the water.” They also enjoyed shopping in downtown Fernandina Beach and hitting some favorite restaurants, like The Salty Pelican, where the bride’s father, Mitch Murray, is general manager. Many of the guests stayed in the heart of the Historic District at the Hampton Inn & Suites overlooking the marina.

The rehearsal dinner was held at Marlin & Barrel, the vodka and rum distillery downtown. “Ten months before the big day, we gave them an oak wood barrel, engraved with our wedding logo, so they could make a special rum just for us,” Ashton explains. “They bottled and signed the brew, and this made the perfect gift for our wedding party!” On wedding day, the ladies of the bridal party had their hair and make-up done at Images Salon and Serendipity. While the bridal party finished getting ready before the start of the ceremony, the guests were seated and passed a glass of champagne. Meanwhile, nestled under the canopy of oaks, Gary Ross provided music on a white baby grand piano provided by Terry and Mark Deaton, owners of Resort Talent, the bride’s mother and step-father. Ashton’s uncle officiated the nuptials, having been ordained for this special event. At the reception, Ross serenated the guests during the cocktail hour, while Joe Bees cooked delicious prime rib and seared mahi-mahi over the fire pit. After dinner, everyone danced the night away to DJ Herman Nazworth and enjoyed a beautiful cake by Paige Broughton, the bride’s sister and Executive Pastry Chef at Ponte Vedra Inn & Club. A special moment at the celebration was the anniversary dance, where couples stayed on the floor if they had been married 20 years, then 30 years, and so on, until the last couple dancing was Ashton’s grandparents, who have celebrated almost 60 years together! “They know how to make it work and stay married,” says Ashton. “And that was important for us to celebrate on our special day.” The Hunters left to begin their fairytale surrounded by the twinkling of sparklers and a shower of love from their family and friends, who are ready to stand beside them as they build their own happily ever after for the next 60 or so years. VENUE SPOTLGHT

Pepper’s Mexican Grill & Cantina By Karen Miller

Photographs by Sherry Garbarini

Pepper’s Mexican Grill & Cantina is a family-owned restaurant that serves only the finest quality Mexican food made fresh every day. One of the most popular restaurants on Amelia Island, Pepper’s is a vibrant, fun, and beautiful venue for a host of events, including weddings, rehearsal dinners, bachelor and bachelorette parties, bridal luncheons, and welcome parties for wedding attendees coming from out of town. Hailing from the small town of Degollado, Jalisco in Mexico, the Garcia family is committed to customer service. “At Peppers, we provide anything and everything for you for your special event,” says Vanessa Villaseñor, Pepper’s’ manager. “Something that makes us different from other venues is that we don’t charge for the venue itself. We have a per person charge that covers whatever services 28 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

you desire, whether you want a buffet dinner, a sit-down dinner, or even a full bar.” Pepper’s is located in historic downtown Fernandina Beach, a charming setting for a wedding celebration. The restaurant can seat up to 160 guests, which includes their charming patio space overlooking Centre Street. They also have a private dining room that seats 90 to 100 guests. “The nice thing about our private room is that we offer a private bar, and even private restrooms, so your guests can enjoy an intimate setting. We can also provide a Mariachi band, or you are welcome to provide your own music.” The restaurant boasts a vast menu, but Vanessa encourages her customers to create their own menus, if they want. “Our desire

is to make each event personal,” she says. “We want to make your wedding or rehearsal dinner as stress-free as possible. We even offer linens, special party platters, tequila-tastings, and of course, our famous frozen Margaritas!” Pepper’s also provides full catering service for off-site events. “For our basic service, we deliver the food to your event, but we don’t stop there,” says Vanessa. “We set up the food and make sure everything tastes exceptional, that we have exceeded your expectations. But perhaps you need staff professionals to work your event. Whether it’s bartending, stocking the buffet, serving your guests, or walking around with a tray of appetizers, our catering professionals will take care of the work for you. We even offer a buy-out of the entire restaurant, seasonally. Call us at Pepper’s and we’ll set up an appointment to discuss your event.” After opening the doors at its first location in Port St. Joe, Florida in 2005, Pepper’s can be today found in Panama City, Shalimar, Gainesville, and Tallahassee, along with Fernandina Beach. It’s a fun and family-friendly restaurant that is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, and it is well-known for their gourmet margaritas, served any way you like it –frozen, on ice, or straight up – using various types of tequilas and fruit juices. Pepper’s Mexican Grill & Cantina is located at 530 Centre Street. perfect ring FINDING THE

By Karen Miller with Drew Scott How does a gentleman know what style of ring to choose for his beloved? With a flair for design and years of experience assisting brides and grooms with their jewelry choices, Drew Scott of Scott & Sons Fine Jewelry says the search for the perfect ring begins with the gentleman himself. “Usually, a man will come into the store and look at rings, asking questions about styles and prices,” says Scott. “He’s not sure what he wants, so we help him identify the style of jewelry his potential fiancé wears now. After he has time to think about his options, the gentleman will normally return with a sister-in-law, mother of the bride, or a close friend of the bride, to help make the final decision.” “The halo diamond, above all, has been the most popular engagement ring for some time,” says Scott. “A halo style is a ring with smaller diamonds encircling the center stone. The center stone is usually a diamond, and today we’re seeing oval, along with round diamonds, for the center, with a trimmer, more petite, traditional yellow gold band 30 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

and setting. We’re also seeing a trend back to the solitaire diamond in some cases.” Scott states that brides and grooms are doing their research when it comes to the 4-Cs of diamonds: color, cut, clarity, and carat. “One-carat diamonds are what most couples are looking for,” says Scott. “And they’re looking for clear diamonds on the spectrum, from the colorless to the nearcolorless range.” Sometimes a family diamond will be provided, usually from the potential groom’s family, and the couple will choose a design to work the heirloom stone into a modern setting. For wedding bands, couples want their own ring styles, and rarely do brides and grooms choose matching rings. “There’s a company we do business with called Lashbrook Designs that produces men’s wedding rings from unique metals,” says Scott. “Titanium, cobalt chrome, and meteorite are some of their most popular offerings.” Brides often like to give their bridesmaids jewelry gifts that they can wear for the wedding, but Scott says sometimes the wedding party wants to show off their own individual styles. For traditional gifts for bridesmaids and groomsmen, many couples still choose items like knives, men’s jewelry, and pearl sets. And for the mother of the bride who wants to sparkle, jewelry should be chosen that matches for her own personal style, Scott says, Alex Henriquez is Scott & Sons’ in-house jeweler, who, with 30 years of experience, designs rings and other pieces by hand, using the “lost wax method.” “Many couples want a one-of-a-kind design and Alex can create that for them,” says Scott. “The wax is hand-carved, and Alex can even set a stone into the wax so the bride can try on her ring and get a real idea of what it’s going to look like before the ring is cast.” “One of the things people like about our store is our friendly atmosphere,” says Scott. “We carry the largest bridal selections of in-stock merchandise in northeast Florida. Our vast inventory includes the ever popular halo and solitaire styles, or select a loose diamond to be placed in one of our semi-mount settings. We have wedding jewelry for every budget!” For more information about Scott & Sons or to make an appointment, call (904) 491-1550 or visit www.scottandsons.com.

Staying in line with the interesting necklines this season, Angel Sanchez presents a halter-style gown with classy yet sexy seethrough waist. The embroidered floral tulle reflects the floral fashion trend seen on runways this season.

With a sleek and sensual look, Lela Rose offers clean lines in her Opera House gown. Clean lines are popular in bridal gowns this year. This off-the-shoulder presentation is popular off the runway, too.

bows and pearls are in Wherever you turn for bridal fashion this season, you’ll find bows in every size and accents of pearls, as well as v-necks, lace sleeves, and clean lines. By Julie Simmons When talking about strings of pearls, legendary fashion designer Coco Chanel once said, why wear one if you can wear two? For brides-to-be this year, this is the season of pearls and bows. If Chanel is in, aren’t we all? If you look at the 2017 look books, pearls are everywhere, whether as dainty accents, for example, in Lela Rose’s line, or accenting the entire gown. Don’t panic, if they’re not for you; they’re running a close second to the bows we saw introduced last season. From teeny-tiny bows on skirts to giant ones on the rear of the bodice, to all sorts of shapes and sizes in vertical 3-D on the back, bows are tied for the top trend this season. Also this season we see the continuing the departure from a more conservative look. The Royals introduced the “lace sleeved” modest wedding fashion, but this season, the sleeves on gowns are 32 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

less prominent, making way for not-so-royal plunging necklines. Deep v-necks, in the Pronovias line, for example, halter tops, off the shoulder, and sleeveless are popular styles this year. Depending on the formality of your setting, you could easily traverse from the ballroom to the beach in some of the options available. Sleeves aren’t completely absent, they’re just appearing this season in extra-long or billowy presentations. As one bridal publication noted, long, billowy sleeves give a simple gown a vintage feel, with an off-the-shoulder, sheer style providing an airy, romantic look. With bodices this season, tiered skirts and cascading ruffles are the name of the game. Carolina Herrera, Vera Wang, and Casablanca are all featuring tiers, whether they have ruffles or are simpler in design.

Above left: Lela Rose’s Cheseapake gown is simply gorgeous with its clean, simple presentation, a look that is trending this season. For brides not into big bows and accessories, the clean lines fashionable today is a great option, with no beauty sacrificed! If dramatic is not your taste, rest assured, “simple” is another strong trend this season. Clean lines – simple, basic – are in abundance, starting with the line of Angel Sanchez. Brides want less decoration and more clean lines, Sanchez explained in a recent interview. Sanchez started as an architect before moving into fashion design. How did he end up in fashion design? “My mother is the best dressmaker in my hometown in Venezuela,” he explains. As an architect-turned-top bridal designer, Sanchez’s clean, simple lines make perfect sense! With accessories, big, bold accessories are hot! Earrings, hair pieces, dress embellishments, and tiaras are being seen all over the place, with designers such as Marcheska, Naeem Khan, and Theia, And floral is still providing botanical detail, including branches, leaves, and vines sprouting across the runways in conjunction with the “greenery” color of the year. “Life is made up of a few moments all strung together like pearls,” writes author Joyce Hilfer. “Each moment is a pearl, and it is up to us to pick the ones with the highest luster. If we do not have time to do great things, take a few gentle moments and do small things in a great way.” Brides, your special day may be far from a small thing this year, but in the decade to come, it’s a small thing in the span of life. Focus on building the love and foundation of your marriage, and we wish you love, joy, peace, and blessings!

wedding trends By Lisa Presnell, PWC Every couple has their own preferences and unique style, but it’s always nice to get a little inspiration when planning your wedding. Here are some of the trends you’ll see in wedding celebrations this year. To begin, couples are thinking outside of the box when searching for venues and ceremony locations. They want to surprise their guests with something out of the ordinary and unique. Say “I do!” on a yacht or an old warehouse transformed with chandeliers and draped ceilings. In stationary, stripes and florals, polka dots and chevron are just examples of how couples are mixing patterns on the envelope liners and backs of cards. Look for textured paper, foiled stamping, plexiglass invites, and glow-in-the-dark ink. For the traditional look, calligraphy will always be in style, and couples are learning do it themselves for a more personal experience. When preparing the menu, the wedding and reception should reflect your personalities, and 36 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

many are choosing custom menus with dishes representative of their cultures, places they’ve visited, or where they met. Couples are also choosing local specialties indigenous to where the wedding is being hosted. For instance, Amelia Island is the birthplace for the modern shrimping industry, so fresh local shrimp is likely to be on the menu. When considering food stations think duets: Mini tacos and margaritas, pizza and craft beer, wine and pasta, champagne and dessert. For appetizers, consider interactive stations, like wine and cheese paired with wines served by an on-site sommelier or a raw oyster bar with fresh oysters being shucked onsite for your guests. For smaller weddings, familystyle dining is making a comeback as it allows for interaction amongst the guests at the tables. His and Her drinks and Signature Cocktails seem to be replacing the recent hand-crafted cocktail trend, with couples choosing drinks that fit their personality. Simple, fresh summer drinks like vodka-and-lemonade can be transformed by adding a dash of blue curaçao. You can call it the “Main Squeeze” or “Her Something Blue.” For a refreshing non-alcoholic beverage, add a fresh fruit or cucumber-infused water along with fresh ginger lemonade. And don’t forget the sweet tea! There’s a blast from the past happening in cake fashion. Tall cakes are in again! Instead of vanilla or chocolate, couples are choosing from filling flavors such as strawberry cheesecake, key lime, salted caramel, and mocha ganache. Candy buffets and s’mores stations remain popular, but on the rise is the dessert grazing station with a wide variety of mini desserts or the “donut wall.” Who doesn’t like late night snacks? We are seeing everything from popcorn carts to food trucks serving breakfast items or ice cream cones to butler passed mini tacos and sliders. For a more personal touch, couples are choosing brown bag specials packed with comfort food like peanut butter & jelly sandwiches or homemade cookies and cartons of milk. Best wishes on your special day! going green! By Julie Simmons Amelia Islanders, for the most part, are conscious of “going green,” whether by recycling more, using less paper, or choosing something local and natural. But who could have imagined that wedding floral trends would follow suit and go green, too? Brides, as Kermit the Frog discovered, it’s easy bein’ green, and I encourage you to think natural and organic as you plan the décor for your special day. Of course, Pantone’s naming of “greenery” as 2017’s color set the stage, but watching trends from seasons past, fashion was already heading straight for the organic. “The appeal of this trend is that, for once, we are able to use commercially grown products that are indigenous to Florida, making this another growing trend of using organic materials locally harvested,” says Brooke Raulerson, AIFD, CFD, FSMD, CWP, of Amelia Island’s Artistic Florist. “Foliage such as assorted Eucalyptus, Ruscus, and Salal are growing in popularity. Hurricane 38 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

Matthew put a damper on this low-cost favorite look, but local farms are recovering as quickly as possible.” One of the best parts of the green movement is how it has meshed seamlessly with many of the exciting trends we’ve seen in seasons past, such as personalized signage, cascading bouquets, and centerpieces. For example, if you are using monogram signs, such as food station chalk boards or any other fun signage, consider garlands as an elegant embellishment and an easy way to incorporate greenery. And it doesn’t have to stop with signs. Brooke suggests that brides explore how they might incorporate earthy additions in all sorts of interesting ways, including with chandeliers, chair décor, and ceremony embroidery. When it comes to boutonnieres and bouquets, stick with what you love, then simply add green, or go completely green! For boutonnieres, many are choosing just green, but the bouquet is continuing with foliage enhancements. “We are seeing so many new introductions to the continuously trending cascade bouquets,” Brooke confirms. “Foliage textures like Nandina, Dusty Miller, variety of ferns and Juniper are really stepping up the textures for both cascade bouquets and hand tied bouquets.” Centerpieces have been getting greener for the past few years, with inverted hanging gardens, freshpicked influences, and lots of vines. This year, try a green leafy table with succulents like eucalyptus, wheat grass, or bay leaf. For color, incorporate the plums and burgundy from last year, perhaps with berries instead of blooms. Or try the garden feel of small blooms like peonies or garden roses. The great thing about incorporating other colors with green is that it always works. “As you can imagine, the color compliments its name in a beautiful vibrant green lending itself to any color palette or alone completing ‘ton sur ton’ (tone on tone),” says Brooke. And just like in bridal fashion, metallic has arrived on the floral and décor scene. This was a new addition to the vintage look last season, and it is all over the place now, particularly in copper and pewter. Use tall glass trumpet vases with lush arrangements that reach over the guests’ heads, or try table-to-ceiling décor in green, with vines, tall trees, or bamboo. And so, brides, as you work out the color palette for your special day, remember: you can’t go wrong when you go green!

In the center of Fernandina Beach, The Fairbanks House has been recognized as one of the most beautiful bed and breakfast inns in the country. Recently named the “Best Place to Elope” by WhereToElope.com, the inn boasts striking Italianate architecture, along with rooms that are charming and comfortable, many with Jacuzzis and private porches. Innkeeper and owner Theresa Hamilton provides wine and chocolate-covered strawberries upon your arrival, as well as spa robes, upscale amenities, and free WiFi in the rooms. “We cater to romance,” says Hamilton. “We are all about quiet, romantic getaways, and we can accommodate every need.” Several of the oversized rooms even have small kitchens and all rooms have coffee makers. A two-course breakfast, complimentary use of bikes, a pool and beach equipment, along with evening beverages and hors d’oeuvres, round out the carefree pampering that couples will remember for a lifetime. Equally charming is The Amelia Island Williams House, a beautifully restored Victorian mansion on a quiet street close to the town center. This award-winning inn features charming spacious guest rooms with working fireplaces, baths with whirlpool tubs for two, elegant bedding, and all of the amenities you need for an atmosphere for romance and relaxation. Innkeepers Chris and Maria Page invite you to sit on their wide verandahs underneath live oak trees dripping with Spanish moss while you “wine” down the day, and enjoy views of their serene gardens, fountains, and koi pond. The Hoyt House Bed & Breakfast, located in downtown Fernandina Beach, is an elegant 1905 Queen Anne-style mansion of gracious living of yesteryear. Known for its inviting guest and sitting rooms, three-course gourmet breakfast, and luxurious amenities, this inn speaks of romantic
