With each issue of Amelia Island Weddings Magazine, we have the pleasure of presenting one of the most important occasions in anyone’s life: their marriage. It gives us a lot of satisfaction to present in these pages some of the wonderful couples who are beginning their lives together with great hope. These uplifting stories of love are always inspiring. Wedding stories document one of the most important rites of passage in life. Couples leave behind their former lives to enter together into a new one, a life that will bring new challenges and joys. Watching friends and family members experience this moment is deeply moving. In fact, seeing any couple, acquaintance or not, at this hopeful moment is heartwarming and life-affirming. Perhaps that is why people love to read wedding magazines, and why so many people comment to us when a new issue appears. The beauty of the occasion shines through in every wedding, large or small, lavish or simple. In this issue, we are happy to present to you the special stories of a few couples who created their scrapbook of unforgettable memories right here on Amelia Island. As we have noted before, Amelia Island is one of the top destinations wedding spots in the United States,

Brandon had two children from a previous marriage, and Sarah fell in love with them as she was falling in love with Brandon.
“We had a lot of family dates together with Grant and Brielle,” she says. “We were also able to spend alone time together, and we love doing the same things—going to the beach, playing board games, and dancing!” The two became engaged on a sailboat in St. Augustine, and soon the couple was planning their wedding. When Sarah and her mother, Lori Holding, visited Oyster Bay Yacht Club and met with event planners Terri Sanders and Ashton Hunter, there was no need to look any further for a venue. “We fell in love with Oyster Bay,” says Sarah. “It’s quaint and intimate, and the natural surroundings are the epitome of Southern coastal casual elegance.” Sarah was living in Fernandina Beach with her parents at the time of her engagement, and Brandon lived in Orange Park. Their proximity to the area, and AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 15
Lori’s enthusiasm for their wedding plans, made things easy for Sarah. “We really loved that Oyster Bay had indoor and outdoor facilities, so we had a ‘Plan B’ for rain,” says Lori. “But, as it turned out, the day couldn’t have been more perfect!” The weekend wedding began with a Friday night rehearsal dinner at Cucina South, which featured a custom menu for their 40 guests. That evening, Sarah and her bridesmaids stayed at a cottage on the Oyster Bay property, where they were able to get ready for the Saturday wedding at a leisurely pace. The wedding ceremony, held at 6 p.m., was perfectly timed for the sunset, with lots of photo opportunities. There wasn’t a dry eye in the 16 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
house as Sarah and Brandon exchanged their vows. Sarah also wrote vows to Brandon’s children, presenting Brielle with a necklace and Grant with dog tags that read ‘Today I tell Daddy I do, and promise you forever, too.’ “This day is etched in my heart forever,” says Lori. “It was the most beautiful and expressive wedding I’ve ever attended, and I think all of our guests felt the same way.” Oyster Bay provided a unique menu of “his and hers” food stations featuring the couple’s favorites—pizza, tacos, and sushi, along with a traditional carving station. Their cake, designed by 4 Rivers Smokehouse, was enjoyed by all, and with DJ Jason Garcia of Footloose Entertainment playing all their favorite tunes, Sarah, Brandon, and their 130 guests danced long into the night. “Brandon and I took dance lessons when we were dating,” says Sarah. “We had the best time dancing with our friends and families!” One of the most touching moments of the wedding celebration was when Sarah entered the venue and saw a special table set up with photos of her grandparents on their wedding days. “We called it ‘Weddings from the Past,’ says Sarah. “Three of my grandparents are deceased, and you can imagine how much I wish they could have been there at my wedding. It brought tears to my eyes seeing their photos. I felt they were there with me in spirit.” After the wedding, Sarah and Brandon went on a 10-day honeymoon in the Dominican Republic, before heading back to their home together in Orange Park. At present, Brandon serves at Mayport Naval Station and Sarah is a first grade teacher. The two are expecting their first child this spring. AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 17
Chelsea & Michael FLORIDA HOUSE INN By Karen Miller

Chelsea Foster met Michael Hawthorne seven years ago when they were attending Flagler College in St. Augustine. They became inseparable—best friends, soul mates—right from the start. But while other young couples were planning their lives and looking to settle down in pretty neighborhoods with white picket fences, Chelsea and Michael had other things in mind. “We bought an old school bus,” laughs Chelsea. “It was a dream of ours to travel in our very own bus, and so we’ve been renovating the bus ever since and planning our life of travel together.” The couple might be free-spirited, but they also had goals. “We had this list of things we were going to do before we got married,” says Michael. “We’d have the bus completed, we’d adopt a dog, etc., and everything would be in place. But I got impatient 18 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
in July 2016 and popped the question to Chelsea on a kayak trip to Tiger Island. And she said ‘yes!’” When most girls become engaged, they go right into weddingplanning mode. But not the laid-back Chelsea, who preferred that she and Michael save their money for traveling instead of spending it on a big wedding. It was Chelsea’s mother, Theresa Paterson, a New Port Richey photographer, who convinced her to get the ball rolling and have her wedding at the Florida House Inn in Fernandina Beach. “Michael’s family has lived on the island since 2003, and it’s such a beautiful place to hold a wedding. When we talked to Innkeeper Dana Schefke, she knew exactly what we wanted, and she was such a pleasure to work with.” Along with planning the wedding with Dana and Chelsea’s mother, family friend Loretta
Thompson provided flowers for the wedding as a gift to the bride and groom. Because most of their family and friends live in the area, people made their own travel plans, with many making it a mini-vacation. The couple held their rehearsal dinner across the street from the Florida House at Pi Infinite Combinations. “The restaurant offered us a special menu for our 50 guests,” says Chelsea. “And we parked the bus out front so that all our guests could take a look and see our renovations. Michael’s sister Sarah, along with his parents, did all the work for the rehearsal dinner, and it was a beautiful evening.” Rain was in the forecast for their wedding day, but that didn’t bother the outdoorsy Chelsea and Michael. “We just got married a few minutes earlier than we planned,” says Michael. “Then the rain came down, and we headed to the porch!” Michael’s grandfather, Dimas Diaz, a pastor from Brunswick, Georgia, was the officiant. And although Chelsea and Michael consider themselves a “non-traditional” couple, they had a large wedding party of 16 bridesmaids and groomsmen. Chelsea and Michael wanted traditional Southern cuisine, so the Florida House offered up their famous fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and macaroni and cheese, with two varieties of cobbler, buffet-style, while guests enjoyed music and dancing on the porch and indoors. When the rain stopped, everyone headed out to enjoy the Florida House Inn’s famous courtyard. Through the years, the 1857 inn has housed many guests, including Ulysses S. Grant, Jose Marti, Henry Ford, Laurel and Hardy, and many others. Today, it hosts wedding guests, tourists, and people from around the world. Chelsea and Michael are so fond of the Florida House that they decided to have a farewell brunch there the day after their wedding before heading off on their honeymoon. Since the wedding, the wayfaring couple has been on a perpetual honeymoon, traveling throughout the Southeast. “We’re planning to head out west later this year,” says Michael. “But first we’ll make a trip back to Amelia Island. We’ll always come back here.” AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 19

When Ellyn Spangenberg was a student at Jacksonville University, just hanging out with her girlfriends, a bold young man from the University of North Florida approached her and said, “You’re the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen.” Ellyn quickly dismissed him, but, in the back of her mind, she always wondered who he was. Just a little over a year later, she found out exactly who he was when this young man’s radar beeped as he saw Ellyn walking through the campus at the University of North Florida! Alex Mouro convinced Ellyn to have a cup of coffee with him, and little did Ellyn know where it might lead. “God obviously knew what I needed and placed him in my life,” laughs Ellyn. Alex proposed as they walked in the sand with their dog, Prince, at Jacksonville Beach in June 2016. Following their engagement, the couple toured wedding venues on Florida’s First Coast, choosing The Ribault Club. Situated on Fort George Island, its location is ideal. Perched on the water under a canopy of historic oaks, The Ribault Club is an historic 1920s-era “Millionaires’ Clubhouse” which recently underwent a four-year restoration. Not only is the venue itself special, but the services it provides are spectacular. “We enjoy helping couples make their day an absolutely great experience,” confirms Wedding Planner Angie Martino. “From ceremony to send-off, I ask couples to think about what they want to enjoy on their day, and remember it. Then I help them to make that vision a reality for their guests to remember, too!” All 275 guests at the Mouro wedding left with plenty of fond memories. “The day was just perfect,” the couple remembers. “The 20 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
feeling of being surrounded by everyone who loves us was simply amazing.” And that is what the day was, as the bride walked down the aisle to her husband-to-be, who waited under the branches of one of the gorgeous live oaks on the property. The couple said, “I do,” with their pastor, Ben Williams of The Church of Eleven22, officiating. The 10 bridesmaids, 10 groomsmen, a sweet flower girl, the couple’s four-legged family member, and the many guests all shared their love with the couple on that beautiful afternoon. Following the ceremony, the couple enjoyed a few moments together while their family and friends kicked off the magnificent party Ellyn had planned. “I chose a natural palate with sandstone, white, and greenery,” she explains. “I had a vision of farm tables mixed with circular tables with lots of garland and a variety of candles.” Ruby Reds Floral and Garden, along with Luxe Party Rentals and Angie, accomplished it perfectly.
The Chef’s Garden Catering & Events served a fun menu that included shrimp and grits and a flaming donuts station. Everyone danced to music of South City Live band, and as the couple left, the crowd cheered and waved giant foam light-up sticks. Wes Davis Creative captured video memories. The next day, the couple visited their families in the houses they rented on the beach on Amelia Island and at Amelia Island Plantation. “The opportunity to share homes with our families and friends made the entire weekend a big reunion,” says the couple. “We were able to have breakfast together, host the rehearsal dinner, and even have a bonfire on the beach.” The crowd also took advantage of golfing on Amelia Island, shopping, and dining out in downtown Fernandina Beach. It may have taken a lot of nerve for Alex to chase down his beautiful bride, not once, but twice, but today they are both thrilled to be sharing coffee together for the rest of their lives! On the day Lauren Byrns met Gantt Williams, she knew she would marry him. Lauren, who grew up in Fernandina Beach, was attending law school in Charleston when Gantt came with friends to a party at her condominium. “I knew right away we were made for each other because he was listening to my favorite music – The Grateful Dead,” smiles Lauren. Gantt, from Spartanburg, South Carolina, had just graduated from the College of Charleston and was working at The Bank of South Carolina. The two immediately hit it off and dated while Lauren finished law school. Their first date was a New Year’s Eve concert in Atlanta. The first time Lauren brought Gantt home to Amelia Island, he was smitten. “We were at the Green Turtle,” remembers Lauren, “and Gantt was trying to find out how much the apartments across the street rented for.” “I loved it here. I’d never even heard of Amelia Island before,” laughs Gantt. After Lauren finished law school, the couple decided 22 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
to move to Amelia Island. Gantt proposed one afternoon at sunset on the dock at Lauren’s parents’ home, and Lauren said yes. They decided they wanted a unique, non-traditional wedding. Lauren’s father Ken, a pilot for American Airlines, came up with the aeronautical theme and suggested the hangar at the Fernandina Municipal Airport. Lauren and Gantt set their wedding for November 4, 2017 – six years to the day after they met. Wedding plans began in earnest. Lauren’s mother, Laurie, and her cousin, Makenzie Blodgett, in California, got together to design the theme for the wedding and the invitations: “Taking Flight.” The couple hosted family and out-of-town guests at a rehearsal dinner at the Florida House Inn. Family members from around the country stayed at the Hampton Inn & Suites in downtown Fernandina Beach and the Residence Inn Amelia Island. “Everyone at both hotels were so nice to work with and so incredibly helpful,” said Lauren.

On the day of the wedding, the couple had a “first look” Ken and Laurie’s home – Gantt was standing on the dock looking at the marsh when Lauren walked down and touched him on the shoulder. “I thought she was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen,” says Gantt. “It was an amazing feeling.” Guests arrived to find white chairs set facing a gazebo draped in white flowers and organza. Vintage suitcases with mileage signs were stacked near the entrances, and place cards for the reception were “baggage tags” hanging on an oversized vintage suitcase. Lauren was flown in for the ceremony in a twin-engine Beechcraft Bonanza, and she and her father climbed down the wing of the plane for the walk down the aisle. Lauren wore a backless Truvelie of Canada ivory dress trimmed with ribboned lace. The couple had no attendants, but Lauren’s closest friends dressed in navy and gold to show their connection with the bride and the wedding’s “airline” theme. Their vows were said in front of Wain Wesberry of First Presbyterian Church in Fernandina Beach. Alain LeLait played Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah during the ceremony. After the ceremony, the two hundred twenty guests moved into the hanger, where a stage and dance floor were set up. The reception dinner was provided by three Jacksonville food trucks: Rocco’s Pizza, Berndt Ends BBQ, and Sweeto Burrito, as well as fried shrimp from T-Ray’s, a local favorite. At the cake table, thirteen different cakes created by Carolyn’s Cakes were set among vintage luggage and hat boxes. After dinner, KTG Band from Jacksonville played dance and sing-along songs, and during the Top Gun song “Danger Zone,” guests were provided with pilots’ hats and aviator sunglasses. Mark Deaton of Eventcraft in Fernandina Beach handled the lighting and sound, while the photographers were Brandi Hill and Holly Allain. After a reception that lasted well into the evening, guests were invited to The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island for an after-party. Sixty friends closed down the bar with the happy couple, who spent two nights there before flying to Bali for a two-week honeymoon.

Taran O’Grady was sitting alone at her first sorority semiformal at James Madison University when a gentleman named Allen Jackson pulled up a chair. Taran divulged that her date was a no-show, but Allen quickly reassured her. “You are too cute to sit alone,” he said. Little did the two know that one day they would be sitting together for the rest of their lives. A few short years later, Taran was preparing dinner, turned around, and found Allen on one knee asking if she wanted to spend the rest of her life with him! Not exactly the proposal he had in mind, but that’s Taran and Allen—they are able to they roll with the punches no matter what life brings. In fact, Allen had two separate proposal plans thwarted when the engagement ring arrived—not once, but twice—in the wrong size! Taran grew up on Amelia Island, and as the daughter of Lisa VanderWege—long-time owner of Gourmet Gourmet, an Amelia 24 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
Island restaurant and catering business—Taran was raised going to weddings. “I knew since I was probably six years old that I would have my wedding at Walker’s Landing,” she says. The couple loved the venue’s natural landscape, its waterfront location under a canopy of oaks, and the opportunity to decorate the interior any way you like. With the venue secured, the event planning took shape. Lisa, a professional at these occasions, was excited to plan her daughter’s wedding. A partnership with Brooke Raulerson and Artistic Florist helped make the setting not only gorgeous, but romantic, with a vintage feel. “I absolutely loved the trust and freedom the family gave me to portray their color scheme and style. I enjoyed finding flower varieties, in their peak season, in the wine color scheme, from all corners of the earth, full of textures and rich, vibrant colors,” says
Brooke. The couple also loved that Walker’s Landing’s large lit fireplace provided a distinctive, cozy touch. When the wedding week arrived, guests began to check in to the Residence Inn Amelia Island and various rentals around the island. On Thursday, the couple hosted a welcome cocktail party for out-of-town guests, then on Friday evening, the crowd enjoyed a wonderful rehearsal dinner at Sliders Seaside Grill on the beach. And just like that, the festivities were in full swing, filled with lots of love and laughter. On the morning of the wedding, Taran and her bridesmaids relaxed in a bridal suite at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort, where they spent the day perfecting their hair and makeup with Paulina Perez. Remember the engagement ring hiccup? Well, on their wedding day, Taran found herself with a misplaced veil and a stolen maid-of-honor dress! “I kept my cool,” Taran remembers
with a sigh, sharing that a friend saved the day by buying every veil that a local bridal shop had in stock. And, by a miracle, a dress in the right color was found for the bridesmaid! Undeterred, the wedding ceremony got underway as scheduled, with a beautiful set of “I do’s” beneath the unparalleled natural backdrop at Walker’s Landing and a delightful evening that friends and family will remember forever. Catering by Liz Grenamyer presented a variety of food stations, and a couple of Amelia Island DJs provided plenty of fun. Pam Bell Photography captured the evening’s memories. As the couple left the venue, their friends surprised them with a shower of JMU-colored streamers – just like in their college days! Taran and Allen are off to a great start at married life, raising their daughter, Sophie, and all the joy she brings. It is important to consider the neckline of the dress, the color of the metal components on the dress, and how you’ll wear your hair. Tying together all of these details is a balancing act and should only be complemented by the accessories you choose. Many modern brides pick a theme for their wedding to achieve a certain vibe. Whether it’s vintage, bohemian, or classic, jewelry can help reflect the personal style of the bride and stand out on the big day. There are several things to consider when choosing jewelry to go with your dress, including the style and your budget. Without question, pearls are a favorite for many special occasions, and especially weddings. As American fashion designer Lubov Azria recently shared on social media, she was channeling her “inner bohemian” with a maxi print skirt and a textured denim jacket, making a bold statement about the hottest styles for this spring’s bridal season. Who would have guessed that someday we would see a bride in denim or a leather jacket! Just as the “black” earthquake shook last season’s bridal runways, denim and leather are causing tremors this season with custom embroidered jackets and fun sayings on the back like, “Mrs. Mills,” “Just Married,” or even “His” and “Hers” jackets. But if this sort of drama is not your thing, have no fear: modern, sleek, clean, and fresh options are just as abundant. Emerging after a few seasons of overdosed laces and feathers, a solid gown in any style is very welcome this season. The intriguing characteristic of this trend is that it can “feel” so different based on the bodice – a solid, tailored gown for the classic bride or a slinky slip dress offering for the organic fiancée. And when it comes to the neckline, the answer is “yes.” The runways overflowed with straight-across necklines, off-the-shoulder looks, halters, high-collars, and plenty of v-necks. Custom wreaths dripping with foliage, spinning over the dance floor, and eucalyptus-draped chandeliers hanging from tree limbs during outdoor ceremonies are creating gasp worthy ambiance.

From unplugged weddings to bohemian decor and geometrics, weddings appear to be more modern and less conventional. Many couples are looking for a relaxed and fun atmosphere, and they are creating new wedding traditions that have us swooning. BOHEMIAN STYLE The bohemian wedding trend is not new, and we think it’s here to stay. These uniquely beautiful events combine aspects of romance, nature, and the couple’s personality. Bohemian-inspired couples embrace the motif through fashion, including flower crowns and light airy dresses, and décor, with cascading bouquets and centerpieces using driftwood and succulents. Some take a more subtle approach, including elements here and there, with a touch of glam. Bohemian style, also referred to as boho-chic, has come to mean “free-spirited.” 36 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
BOLD COLOR AND GEOMETRICS Geometric shapes are fashion forward, with many couples are using them as centerpieces, like terrariums with florals, greenery, or succulents. Uniquely shaped lanterns are also being used in the same way. Many couples have moved on from natural earthy tones to bolder shades, adding a pop of color with purples and reds. RELAXED SEATING AND LOUNGE AREAS Creating a relaxed atmosphere is what’s hot. Specialty bars and lounge-style seating has become more desirable over the past few years. Couples are opting for a less formal reception style and are creating casual seating spaces so their guests are comfortable and more relaxed. CASUAL FOOD Food Trucks and DIY dessert bars are all the rage. Who doesn’t love a taco truck or a self-serve sundae bar? We are seeing cupcake buffets with an array of toppings and food trucks that serve everything imaginable these days, like Gourmet Grilled Cheese Sandwiches, Fish Tacos, or MadeTo-Order Sushi. There is something nostalgic about a food truck or serving something that your guests all know and love from their childhood. UNPLUGGED CEREMONIES Yes, please! Photographers, officiants, and the couples themselves are struggling with photohungry guests who don’t stay seated during the ceremony. Guests are making photos difficult by blocking the photographer or distracting the couple. The first look, the walk down the aisle, the kiss… those are special moments, and there are no do-overs. The solution? An unplugged ceremony. Couples are making custom signs and requesting that all cell phones, devices, and cameras be put away so the professionals can do their jobs. design & décor By Julie Simmons As you embark on planning your special day this bridal season, expect tons of fun because styles are shifting this year into new territory, to neverbefore-seen horizons. The style is… bohemian! So what exactly does that mean? Basically, bohemian means unconventional! A bohemian wedding will break traditions, rules, and expected practices while embracing artistic, relaxed alternatives in everything from wedding fashion to table décor, including even the format of the event. The great news is that whatever you love is now a possibility on your day! To help you get started on your own bohemian brainstorming, let’s take a look at what other brides and designers are planning this year. Perhaps the most prevalent trend is the use of dreamcatchers. Take a quick peek around a boutique or store and you’ll find plenty of them, from small ones for household décor to necklaces attached to a dress. On their wedding day, brides are using larger ones as canopies over the altar, miniature ones to hold 38 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS
guest books and place cards, or perhaps a cluster of different sizes as an overhead embellishment. They’re coming in all sorts of colors, and you can add accents such as crystals, which, by the way, are very popular this wedding season, emerging in centerpieces, bridal jewels, and hairpieces. With the New Age feel of the bohemian, last season’s barn trend is making way for new types of venues. Think about a clean, industrial type of space – it’s edgy, current, and it offers a clean slate to make the day into anything you want it to be! The bohemian naturally invites nature to its table, and venues with woodsy auras are at the top of many brides’ list, even the woods itself! If you opt for indoors, you can still embrace nature by bringing it inside. Wood is trending intensely. Brides are using it every chance they can, from wooden invitations to table numbers, signs, chairs, and tables. Also from the woods, “moss” is hot! In lieu of floral walls, brides are opting for natural moss walls and including personalized touches on it, like an engagement photo, wooden sign, or even lights. This solution comes with less commitment to a color palate, and you can easily mix flowers with the moss as well. My favorite trend this season is the focus on textures. Consider wax seals on invitations or menus, assorted linens on the table, and mixes of fabrics like velvet and burlap, or even tables constructed with unique materials. And macramé is here! Of course, we see this textile in the dreamcatchers, but don’t stop there. Brides are hanging it from chandeliers, using it as table linens, chair sashes, and, of course, accenting it with lighting for extra pizazz. Speaking of lighting, just like denim and leather are turning heads in bridal fashion, so are neon lights in décor! Light it up, ladies, be it a fun saying, a table number, or your own personalized something. Finally, go Napa Valley Romance, says our own Brooke Raulerson, AIFD, CFD, FSMD, CWP, owner, lead floral artist, and certified wedding planner of Artistic Florist and Events. “Brides are describing their ideal wedding in palates of popular beverages,” she says. “Think about shades of wine, scotch, burgundy, marsala, blush, and champagne. The muted hues of wine are present in bridesmaid dresses, table linens, flowers, embellishments, and cake décor.” When it comes to the blooms, Brooke explains they are spilling over vessels and cascading, using large heavy blooms like peonies, garden roses, dahlias, parrot tulips, and ranunculus.
