Island is blessed with historic churches and stunning natural beauty. Couples can enjoy an oceanfront ceremony or reception, panoramic marsh vistas that run out to the Intracoastal Waterway—which can include an unforgettable sunset in the early evening —or beautifully manicured golf course greenery with a backdrop of old oaks. All of these romantic settings can be enjoyed at the many wonderful venues —great and small—here on the island. One reason why Amelia Island is such a popular place to get married is that a couple can really have the wedding of their dreams here, whatever their dream may be. In this issue, as is often the case, we have the pleasure of featuring two couples from Amelia Island, two couples from Jacksonville, and a couple that made Amelia Island their choice for a memorable destination wedding. The stories we are able to share with you are always unique, and always inspiring. In addition to these weddings, we want to congratulate all the couples who have begun their lives together on Amelia Island in the past six months, celebrating weddings from the more traditional to wherever their hearts might lead them. They are beautiful celebrations that bless the union of couples who have decided to join their lives together in marriage, and we wish them all well. We hope you will enjoy reading this issue of Amelia Island Weddings as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Whether you’re a resident, a frequent visitor, or a newcomer to Amelia, we trust that you will see the extraordinary wedding possibilities available to you on this lovely 13-mile-long barrier island.

exclusive and just naturally beautiful, and along with the services and flexibility they provide, it’s unparalleled.” “Last year was a tough, yet amazing, year for my family,” says Ashley. “My mom was defeating breast cancer, and my sister and I both got married. When it came to our wedding, I didn’t want to create additional stress. Oyster Bay was the perfect solution. “We had the vision for the décor, shared it with the team, gathered the supplies, and they delivered!” The couple was smart in their choices for the celebration, and the Oyster Bay Yacht Club team was able to pull everything together with a high level of design detail.

“Planning with Ashley & Kyle was an absolute dream. They are a lovely couple that exude a sense of sophistication, and an overwhelming kindness to everyone who crosses their path. They were so sweet to see interacting with one another in their planning; it was quite obvious they are a perfect match!” says Ashton Hunter, Oyster Bay’s Wedding and Events Manager. “Oyster Bay let us have the whole place to ourselves,” says Ashley. “There wasn’t a wedding the day before, and there was no rush to cleanup for one the day after. This, combined with their commitment to handle all the details, freed me to enjoy my wedding morning sipping coffee and enjoying a mimosa instead AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 15

of rushing around worrying about everything. It was amazing to be surrounded that morning by ten of my best friends and family —all the women I love—together,” Ashley reminisces. As the big day was approaching, it looked like the weather wasn’t going to cooperate for the outdoor ceremony. With any outdoor event in Florida, a back-up plan is essential in case of bad weather, and Oyster Bay Yacht Club was ready with the perfect Plan B. “We partnered with Luxe Party Rentals to create a beautiful option for a rainy wedding day,” says Hunter. “Luxe provides a custom white frame tent with fabric draped poles and cathedral window sidewalls for an elegant feel. With the wedding tent placed on the front lawn, it still showcases the natural greenery and beautiful old oaks on the property.” Meanwhile, the groomsmen were having a good time of their own—rain or no rain! “Our low-country boil rehearsal dinner 16 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

was at the Golf Club of Amelia Island, so it was fun afterwards to celebrate at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island,” says Kyle. “The next morning, we enjoyed breakfast at my parents’ house and a little fishing on their dock before I prayed over our group and we headed with our umbrellas over to Oyster Bay.” “No rainy day could damper the excitement for Ashley and Kyle,” says Hunter. “With the white tent set on the lush front lawn, the clubhouse provided a beautiful backdrop for the bride’s grand entrance, and Spanish moss and hanging oaks cascaded behind the wedding party as they said their ‘I Do’s.’ The ceremony included not only romantic raindrops, but happy teardrops from all who attended!” The bride’s uncle officiated the wedding as a special touch, and Ashley’s sister was a soloist. The couple shared their first communion as husband and wife alongside a family Bible that has been in ten weddings over the generations. Family heirlooms had important roles as well, with Ashley including lace from her mother’s wedding gown in her bouquet and holding onto the handkerchief of her new father-in-law, Dr. Gerald Burford. Surrounded by loved ones, Ashley and Kyle were inundated with best wishes, happiness, and love, as well as rain, on their beautiful wedding day. And they look forward to many more years of splashing through life together as a family, with a new arrival now on the way! AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 17

Alexandra & Ein T H E R I B A U LT C L U B By Teri Sopp

Photography by Brent Culbertson Photography

Mutual friends introduced Alexandra Thompson and Ein (pronounced “Ian”) Brinson when they were in college, Alexandra at Florida State University and Ein at Georgia Southern. “We had a long-distance relationship all the way through college,” laughs Alexandra. She and Ein both graduated in 2016, and they were confident that their long-term plans would include marriage. In January 2018, Ein proposed at beautiful “Tree Beach” on Big Talbot Island, just south of Amelia Island, with his grandmother’s wedding ring in hand. Alexandra, who grew up in Jacksonville, had long attended San Jose Catholic Church, and she always knew she wanted to get married in her childhood church. “We knew we wanted to keep it simple,” says Alexandra, “so we kept things small and did a lot of the work ourselves.” Alexandra and her mother planned much of the wedding, and 18 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

Angie Marino of the Ribault Club on Fort George Island did the “day of” honors. Alexandra chose a fall color scheme for the couple’s November wedding. “Our colors were navy and a deep red wine color, which sort of played on our school colors,” she said. Alexandra knew that she wanted a dress with a vintage feel and long sleeves. She selected her dress and dresses for the attendants at David’s Bridal in Jacksonville. The Victorian-style dress had an illusion back with covered buttons from waist to neck, and a gently flowing skirt that was perfect for dancing at the reception. Alexandra and Ein each had three attendants. Two of Alexandra’s best friends from college and her sister served as bridesmaids and matron of honor. One of those friends had a hand in introducing Alexandra and Ein. Similarly, Ein had two college friends and a cousin as his attendants.

The afternoon wedding at San Jose Catholic Church Catholic Church in Jacksonville was followed by a reception at the Ribault Club. Alexandra’s mother placed the signs along the route from the church all the way out to Fort George Island, letting guests know they were almost there. Alexandra and Ein wanted their guests to relax and be comfortable at their reception. There were cornhole games in the backyard and passed hors d’ouvers prior to the sit-down buffet dinner. Chef Hope of D’vine Cuisine in Jacksonville provided the food; one of the most interesting passed hors d’ouvers was the shrimp rice, a take on shrimp and grits dish, but with purple rice grits from Congaree and Penn Farm in Jacksonville. “We also served chicken and waffles,” says Alexandra. The buffet featured a carving station, mashed potatoes, salad, and a chicken dish. The three-tiered wedding cake with ivory icing echoed the Victorian theme of Alexandra’s dress and was topped by a whimsical wooden cake topper that read “Mr. and Mrs. Brinson.” Flowers for the ceremony and the reception were provided by Anything With Plants/Amazing Wedding Productions. Alexandra chose blush and ivory garden roses accented with garnet orchid

blooms, eucalyptus leaves, and olive branches for her bouquet. Her attendants carried roses mixed with eucalyptus, while the groom also wore the burgundy orchid blooms. Alexandra’s family is Polish, and since it is a Polish custom for brides to wear amber at their wedding, Alexandra wore amber earrings. She also carried her great-grandfather’s Polish prayer book. Photographer Brent Culbertson of Brent Culbertson Photography captured the emotion of Alexandra and Ein’s ceremony; his candid photos at the reception memorialize all the fun the couple and their guests had. “Brent was great and easy to work with,” says Alexandra. “He was even out on the dance floor with us.” Brent suggested a series of dramatic nighttime photos to Alexandra and Ein, which made a dramatic addition to their wedding album. Ein knew he wanted to do something unique when the couple left their reception, so his tricked-out 2003 Ford Mustang Cobra served as the getaway car. The couple made their exit with a “burnout” in front of the club as they departed from the Ribault Club and their cheering family and friends. Alexandra, who works at Florida Blue, and Ein, who is an assistant project manager for Dana B. Kenyon, are planning their honeymoon now. AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 19

Ashley & Alex OCEAN CLUB OF AMELIA ISLAND By Maria McDaniel

Photography by Jenna Edds Photography

Although they didn’t realize it at the time, Ashley Huerter and Alex Hazard were at the same point in their lives, both in their early 30’s and waiting for “something.” Both are natives of Kansas, which is also their home. Alex has more of a country background, while Ashley knew very little about life on a farm. But when they met at a concert in 2016, a mutual breath of fresh air rushed into their lives. A first date came about a month later after they connected on Facebook. They each had a child, and both of them took pride in being good parents. Their common and different interests became a good balance in their developing relationship. Ashley had visited Amelia Island once before, having learned about it through a relative. She relayed her island experiences to Alex, and they both visited in the spring of last year. They especially enjoyed historic downtown Fernandina Beach, where they spent a lot of time walking and exploring. 20 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

They liked the restaurants they discovered and the relaxed, seaside atmosphere of the island, and they happened upon a copy of Amelia Island Weddings Magazine. By this time, they knew they had found exactly who and what they were waiting for, so they decided to plan an island wedding for themselves on Thanksgiving weekend last year. A family friend helped them with obtaining all the services they would need for their big day. During their April visit, they sampled several cakes and chose Nana Teresa’s for their perfect wedding cake. “It was beautiful and delicious,” smiles Ashley. Everything soon began to fall into place for the couple’s wedding plans. Ashley searched for just the right dress, and was about to give up when she found just what she was looking for in her home state. Destination Amelia was on, and many of their guests would be arriving from other areas of the country. Ashley’s parents drove in from Kansas, transporting her dress halfway across the country. All the wedding guests of every age found fun

activities to enjoy during the weekend, and everyone commented on the convenience and variety of options available. “Our flowers for the rehearsal dinner, ceremony, and reception were created by Ken at Dottie B’s, and they were amazing,” says Ashley. Arte’s Pizza catered their rehearsal dinner at the Historic Harborfront Hampton Inn & Suites. “Everyone enjoyed the setting and raved about the food. Working with Sabrina at Arte’s was a great experience.” A close personal friend and photographer, Jenna Edds, was happy to travel to the island to capture their memories. They took photos throughout the area, on Amelia’s pristine beaches and in the historic downtown. The wedding ceremony took place at St. Michael Catholic Church and was performed by a family friend of theirs, Reverend H. Patrick Malone, also from Kansas. Ashley and Alex had their reception at the Ocean Club of Amelia Island, and the couple emphasized that working with Nigel was easy and enjoyable. “Nigel gave us good direction and oversight, and everything was just right for our reception,” say Ashley and Alex, “And the staff were all attentive but not intrusive.” Island Sound DJ provided music for the reception, and the guests were on their feet all night. The couple and many of their guests stayed at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort. They loved the gorgeous views at every turn, the private yet vibrant atmosphere of the resort, the mild fall weather, and the beautiful beaches. Alex recalls the entire experience as more perfect than he could have ever imagined. Happily settled in Kansas, Ashley and Alex treasure family, cooking together, music, and visiting wineries and breweries both at home and in their travels. And Amelia Island is at the top of their return visit list. AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 21

Jennifer & Michael ON LANCEFORD CREEK By Julie Simmons

Photography by Tonya Beaver Photography

You know what they say about too many cooks in the kitchen? Well, rather than spoiling things, sometimes something magical can happen when a couple of cooks get together in the kitchen! At least that was the case for Jennifer and Michael Ames, who met in the galley of their employer, where Michael was chef and Jennifer a cook. “One night, we bumped into each other at a friend’s party and realized that maybe there was something more,” Jennifer reminisces. On their first date, like any good chef, Michael taught her to cook Asian dumplings. “We began seeing each other, but we had to keep it a secret because dating co-workers wasn’t allowed! So, for nine months, we were undercover.” During those months, Michael began to realize that maybe the best thing cooking in that kitchen was the love simmering 22 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

between them. Meanwhile, Jennifer says she knew he liked her when he invited her to join his card game. “I grew up playing bridge and the known games,” she says, “but Magic: The Gathering is a whole new league. It literally took me a year to learn how to play!” But it was during that year of her persistence and his patience that the duo got to know each other well. Soon after, the couple planned a trip to Las Vegas for a card tournament. It was there, on the Grand Patio of the Bellagio, that Michael got down on one knee with a diamond that sparkled brighter than the Las Vegas lights. When Jennifer told her aunt, Dr. Laurie Kitson, about her engagement, Laurie replied, “We’d love for you to have your wedding here, and we’ll throw a great party!” Jennifer was thrilled because her aunt has a beautiful home on the water with a large

dock. The venue was so perfect the couple decided to have their rehearsal dinner there as well, which was an important night for the couple because it was the first time that the two families would be meeting each other, including their parents. Sunshine Grindz catered the event, and of course, everyone had a great time. On the morning of their wedding, the couple was greeted by bright sunshine and autumn blue skies. “I was having so much fun getting ready with my family, but I was regretting that I hadn’t brought my cat ‘Boo’ for a photo idea I’d seen,” Jennifer shares. “My Boo was old, and I was worried that the travel would be traumatic.” A bride knows she’s marrying the right man when certain things happen. “There was a knock at the door and the best man smiled, handing me a cat carrier with a message that Michael knew the day would be better if I had my Boo.” Tonya Beaver Photography captured that moment in a photo, and it’s a special treasure for the couple since their furry family member passed a couple of months later. Student violinists serenaded attendees on the lawn overlooking Lanceford Creek before the couple exchanged vows surrounded by 70 family members and close friends. And then the celebrations began! Blue Water Bouquets created the floral pieces, and the groom prepped all the food in advance while his chef friends helped to cook. Everyone loved the beef tenderloin, salmon, and roasted vegetables. Biscottis supplied the “sweets table” with a collection of their mini desserts. Meanwhile, DJ Steadman got the crowd on their feet, and the dance floor was overflowing all night! The night ended with sparklers lighting the way for a beautiful marriage ahead. Six months in, the duo is still playing cards, enjoying games, movies, bike rides, and of course, cooking together in their kitchen! AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 23

Zoee & Brandon

THE FLORIDA HOUSE INN By Julie Simmons Photography by Ron Patten

Zoee Rosser and Brandon Baker’s love story is full of surprises, from the day they met to the day they married. Zoee still remembers first time she saw Brandon. They both agree it was love at first sight, but life took its twists and turns and the couple moved on—for 14 years! Then one day, Brandon listened to his heart and gave Zoee a call, and it was the best call she ever answered. Almost exactly six months later, on October 26, 2018, Zoee’s family was scheduled to celebrate her parents’ shared 78th and 80th birthdays and their 55th wedding anniversary at The Florida House Inn. “I knew everyone was going to be together, so I told Brandon, let’s do it,” Zoee smiles. To make the planning even easier, it was the weekend of the Florida/Georgia football game, so lots of Brandon’s family members were visiting Fernandina Beach, his hometown. The couple then invited Brandon’s family to the party as the perfect chance to get to know Zoee’s family, or so they told everyone. But how could they pull off a surprise wedding? Very easily, it turns out, with Saramonies, a story teller and wedding officiant based in Tallahassee, where Zoee is from. “One might say she is an artist painting a picture of your love and commitment to each other in such a way that your friends and family truly see it,” explains Zoee. And that she did for Zoee’s parents’ 55 years of love, and then for Zoee and Brandon. “Sara interviewed us and learned our stories. At the celebration, she stood, introduced herself, and shared with the crowd how my parents had met and married. And then, she transitioned to another love story!” “The Baker’s wedding was definitely memorable,” says Dana Schefke of The Florida House Inn. “One of the reasons is that no one, myself included, even knew that it was going to be a wedding! Right before the event, Zoee’s best friend showed up with a garment bag and asked if there was an available room that Zoee could use to change. I thought, ‘Oh! A costume change, how fun!’ But then she unzipped the bag to reveal a beautiful wedding dress!” As Saramonies captured the crowd’s attention with the Rossers’ love story, Zoee slipped away to a room Dana generously shared to 24 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

prepare for her own story. She emerged just as Sara asked her parents permission for Zoee and Brandon to share their anniversary! “You can only imagine everyone’s reaction,” smiles Dana. “She walked to her groom in front of the fountain, and the two were married in a small, intimate ceremony full of love and surprise.” “Family is so important to us, and doing it this way was just what we wanted,” the couple shares. Since Zoee planned the event, it was her chance to arrange everything just the way the couple wanted it. “I worked with a friend who owns a floral business to design the centerpieces and my bouquet,” she explains. They also chose a tiered-cake, which looked gorgeous next to a photo of her parents cutting their wedding cake. And it just so happened that

Zoee had asked her dad’s best friend, a photographer, to capture memories of the celebration—which turned into two celebrations —as well! All that was left was to enjoy the delicious Southern menu that The Florida House Inn prepared, which included friend chicken, prime rib, salmon, mashed potatoes, mac n’ cheese, green beans, and corn bread. Zoee and Brandon are enjoying married life and doing all the things they love, like spending time at the beach, on the golf course, and especially Sunday brunch at The Florida House Inn. They might’ve surprised the crowd that day, but what isn’t surprising is that this couple created some very special family memories, which everyone will treasure forever. AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 25

AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS 29

finding your own style By Karen Miller with Gigi Grubner Every bride wants to shine on her wedding day. But so does her groom. For today’s modern couples, purchasing engagement and wedding rings plus wedding day jewelry has become a team effort. Gigi Grubner, owner of Amelia’s Fine Jewelry, says that couples have very distinctive ideas on ring styles, and generally try to stick to their budgets. “All sorts of diamonds and gemstones are in style right now,” says Gigi. “There’s no particular mindset, and couples are exploring so many options in choosing jewelry that reflects their own personalities. Mixing metals is very popular right now, along with stackable eternity bands. And we’re seeing more interest in pear-shaped stones, along with the fashionable halo design.” Diamonds are forever, but so are gemstones. Gigi has noticed that many brides are opting for non-diamond engagement rings. The solution for a unique and one-of-a-kind ring for some brides is morganite. The remarkably high quality of morganite makes it perfectly appropriate for 30 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

an engagement ring. “Morganite paired with rose gold is a beautiful look,” says Gigi. “Another nontraditional trend is using an uncut diamond in the engagement ring.” Prince Harry’s 2018 marriage to American actress Meghan Markle has sparked a higher demand for yellow gold. The custom-made engagement ring Prince Harry designed for his wife featured three diamonds—two round cuts that belonged to his mother Princess Diana, and one Botswana diamond in the center—and has women searching for a similar look. “This is called the ‘Meghan Markle effect,’ says Gigi. “But the biggest departure from traditional rings styles is that they don’t necessarily match. Women wear their jewelry differently. It’s a very eclectic style.” Gigi is seeing a great deal of interest in her store’s “Zeghani” collection, featuring a vast and affordable variety designed to fit any lifestyle. “Zeghani is a jewelry company founded by Simon G’s son, Zaven Ghanimian,” says Gigi. “All Zeghani pieces designed are created in 14K Gold, making them more affordable without compromising the beautiful design or the craftsmanship. They definitely have the distinctive, cultured, sophisticated, and fashion-forward designs that young women are looking for today.” “Layered necklaces are all the rage this season, in everyday life and also in wedding trends. This can create a definitive contrast that will help the necklaces be more easily seen,” says Gigi. “Of course, the stone that is on the necklace will certainly be noticed, but it will stand out even more when combined with a layered necklace of two or more types of metal.” Men’s wedding rings have been going through some major changes over the past few years. The onesize-fits-all wedding band has become an antiquated concept. What a man does every day—whether working in construction, sitting at a desk, or going to the gym every morning—guides his wedding ring choices. “Black metal bands and titanium have become extremely popular,” says Gigi. “They are really nice-looking rings, durable, and they cost less than a traditional gold ring.” This year is seeing a comeback year for pearls, which are typically found in earrings, bracelets, or necklaces. If the bride wears jewelry besides the ring, pearls will be a popular choice. They are being seen in headbands or head accessories as well. Located at 317 Centre Street, Amelia’s Fine Jewelry has become an icon in the Fernandina Beach Historic District. Gigi encourages couples to come in for a consultation and see all the latest wedding jewelry trends. retro roars back On the runways this year, retro bridal looks from the 70’s and 80’s are everywhere, with sequins, metallic, and a variety of jumpsuits, while sleeves and capes are still in style. By Julie Simmons “Celebrate good times,” sang Kool & The Gang in their 1980 #1 hit, “Celebration.” And a party in bridal fashion truly is here this season, with its rewind to the alluring looks of previous decades. To see what’s hot, I invite you to “come on!” down the runway with me and take a look at this year’s gowns. Get ready to shake your fringe, if you choose, because bridal fashion, like contemporary style, is flashing back to the 70’s and 80’s. That retro vibe is present in sequins, plunging necklines, midriffs, over-the-top accessories, and even jumpsuits! As an added tribute to the era, bridal minis are making their debut. These are trending for reception attire, but Vogue Magazine is digging them even for walking down the aisle. Let’s hop back to jumpsuits for a second, which some gown watchers say are becoming this year a staple of the wardrobe for either the ceremony, reception, or after-party. Yes, you’ll find them with the disco lineup, but you’ll also see them in a wide range of styles. From flowing bohemian or cropped, fitted, and modern to captivating lace and even a power-suit, the options are varied. Jumpsuits aren’t the only thing going bohemian now. Bridal fashion trends are also making a shift this season to the new rustic bride. The rustic look features puff sleeves and high, Victorian collars paired with a wide-brimmed hat in lieu of the floral crown, a unique, revitalized twist for the flower children in the crowd.

Top left: Carolina Herrara’s Isabelle gown has a classic sweetheart neckline with this season’s off-shoulder sleeves. The gown has a fitted bodice and detachable bow. Top right: Naeem Khan’s sleeveless jewel-neck column gown features beaded embroidery. In delicate ivory, the fitted body releases to a perfect circular train. Below left: Sleek gowns with clean lines are all over runways this season. Lela Rose’s The Paddock has a lace cut-out on the back and the perfect train. Bottom left: Oscar de la Renta’s all-over lace gown is stunning with its sheer sleeves and scalloped detail up to the deep neckline. It is finished with a large, lace bow.

Another interesting trend this season is the contrast between minimalism and traditionalism. For those who prefer modern, gowns with boatnecks, off-the-shoulder necklines, contemporary cutouts, and clean silhouettes are ubiquitous. Meanwhile, the traditional bride will be happy to see that veils are here and likely to stay for a while, but in a fresh, new way. Think statement, not accent! They come with big bows, extra-long like Meghan Markle’s, and with designs and embroidery, note several bridal fashion experts. Continuing this season from the last few years are capes, sleeves, and bows. The capes and coverlets that have emerged the past couple of years are now coming in new presentations, including full-length, illusioned, ruffled, sheer, embroidered, and even as wraps. Meanwhile, sleeves are still covering the bridal runways. They can be off-the-shoulder, sheer, lace, tulle, or even as statements using big puffs and ruffles or detachable features, which can transform your gown into a whole new design for the reception. And bows are here to stay, although this season they are bigger and bolder. Think a giant bow on the back, modern, eye-catching, and theatrical. With our focus on island weddings, this new coastal trend grabbed our attention. This season, a lot of brides are incorporating more coastal blue hues I to their palette, and they are showing up in bridal collections this season either as an all-over gown color or as accents, making “something blue” very easy to accomplish for this season’s brides! Just remember: no matter what you select, you can’t go wrong! In 2019, bridal fashion is about departure from the expected. From all of us at Amelia Island Weddings, we hope you “celebrate good times” on your big day and enjoy a lifetime of love and happiness together. Congratulations, brides!

everywhere are inspired by her choice. You can expect to see regal capes, minimalist dresses, bold sleeves, and statement bows that will make for an awe-inspiring moment as the bride makes her entrance. BACKYARD WEDDINGS Infinitely classic, backyard weddings are gaining popularity in 2019. They allow for a cozy, intimate, and more personal ambience overall. Even if they are not actually held in a back yard, couples are opting for the vibe.

smoke bomb photos By Lisa Presnell, PWC The top wedding trends of 2019 are a big change from past years, and we love it! Of course, trends change from year to year, but I think Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal wedding is giving brides some major inspiration recently. Social media is a huge influence as well. Who doesn’t dream of an Instagram-worthy wedding? Here are some of the top trends that we are seeing this year: SMOKE BOMB PHOTOGRAPHY Smoke bomb photography isn’t new, but we are definitely seeing that these photos are increasingly popular at weddings. It’s a really cool way to add something unique and colorful, giving everyone tons of magical photos to swoon over. WEDDING GOWNS Both conservative and regal gowns are leading trends in modern weddings. Meghan Markle’s simple elegance made a real statement, and brides 36 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

JEWELRY Living bracelets! They are a thing. Bracelets designed with flowers, are a surprising way to modernize traditional bridesmaid bouquets. This year, it’s not only about the dress; bridal jewelry is making a statement. Hair accessories and sparkly tiaras are also having a moment. FLOWER GARLANDS Flower garlands are definitely not a new thing, as they have always been a wedding favorite. But we are seeing them more this year as couples are choosing to use them as table runners, creating absolutely stunning looks at the reception. Flower garlands will probably never go out of style, and we love that brides are getting creative on where to use them. DOUGHNUT DECOR What’s not to love about doughnuts? Fried dough confection equals perfection in my book! Doughnut walls took social media by storm, but now couples are taking doughnuts beyond the dessert table and incorporating them into their wedding décor around the reception space. We are seeing doughnut towers, doughnut cakes, doughnut sticks, platters of doughnuts food trucks with “just” doughnuts. Can you tell that we like this trend? COLORS We are seeing moody color palettes everywhere, from flower arrangements to table linens. Deep rich colors like wine, eggplant, midnight blue, and emerald green are a vast change from the dreamy pastels in the past.

A special place for a special day.

INVITATIONS Remember the days when you went into the local gift shop or florist and went through books and binders of printed invitations? Technology has come a long way, and we have so many options now. From designing your very own invitation online and getting a printed sample in the mail to digital RVSP’s, the options are endless. However, we are seeing a spike with what is called “unboxing”, offering a wow factor, from the moment your guests receive their invitations in the mail. From picture frames to leather cases, invitations are enhanced with unboxing elements.

ECO-CONSCIOUS Most of us seem to be very environmentally conscious, including our brides and grooms. Web searches for ecofriendly wedding decor like paper straws and biodegradable confetti and decor has increased. Eco-friendly wedding options are definitely on the rise. Making smart decisions during wedding planning will not only (likely) be cost effective, but couples will also know they are making an impact on the planet.

W H AT ’ S N E W I N

design & décor By Julie Simmons Maybe the best part of 2019 is its creative mix of old and new! In home design, minimalism is transitioning to traditional. In bridal wedding fashion, same thing, as old-style veils are coming back, but with a whole new look. And in wedding floral and décor as well, get ready for the basics in a revitalized way. That’s what this year is about: take what you know, turn it on its head, and change it into something fresh! In flowers, you’ll be happy to hear the trend is no longer a treasure hunt for exotic, but rather, it’s about being smart and going with flowers in season. Not only can this save money, but the floral arrangements and plants will feel natural to the time of year of your wedding celebration. And remember that some of the most common blossoms for nuptials are in bloom all year-round, including calla lilies, hydrangeas, orchids, and roses. As you decide, think quality over quantity, and choose the best statement blooms. And, for my 38 AMELIA ISLAND WEDDINGS

favorite trend of all, recycle! Brides are reusing the ceremony floral pieces for the reception, after-party, and even the day-after brunch. When it comes to your bridal bouquet, the trend is classic. For brides who favor something more organic, sized-down, loose garden bouquets are gorgeous. Think about asymmetrical shapes, adding a touch of greenery, and continue to stick with in-season buds. Speaking of greenery, we’ve gone avocado for several years now, and this trend has turned into a staple. But this season, new growth is branching out —ferns! Look for ferns in garlands, bouquets, and even as backdrops to the “I do.” And when it comes to backdrops, a lot of interesting ideas are trending. Grasses and dried flowers are here, and brides are putting them together in spectacular ways. For something small, press flowers and use them to accent your invitations, escort cards, or table number cards. For something a little bigger, use these options as centerpieces. Or, for the crowning touch, go for grasses for your ceremony or statement backdrop. Pampas grass, wheat stalks, bunny tails, and fountain grass can create a beautiful background. If you’re thinking about recycling your flora during the wedding weekend, consider using foliage down the aisle. In lieu of your flower darling dropping rose petals, line the aisle of the church with vases or potted arrangements. You can do this with colors, or in all-white with a little greenery for texture. The result is the illusion of walking through a field from the aisle to the altar, as some wedding consultants have suggested. Afterwards, use these pieces for your reception or next-day brunch. When it comes to the reception, a few things are shifting. The wedding reception is returning to its ballroom, dinner-party roots with silver, candlesticks, and monogrammed napkins. Along with this comes a statement wedding cake in lieu of the recent trend of assorted desserts. And, lastly, get creative with texture in 2019! Think balloon arrangements, leather, suede, gold, acrylic, and especially, vellum! Mix and match, and pair things that do not go together! Break out of previous tendencies and create a new trend! From Amelia Island Weddings, continue innovating, and may your marriage be as beautiful as your wedding day. Congratulations!
