The SCORES Story & Model

The America SCORES model was developed in 1994 in Washington, DC by Julie Kennedy, a public school teacher concerned that her students, lacking constructive after-school options, were at risk of gang activity and other dangers after class. Turning to her experience as an athlete, she began teaching her class soccer after school. In bad weather, she turned to her other passion—poetry—and began teaching her students how to write and perform their poetry. Soon, she noticed her students getting more engaged in class, performing better academically, and spending more time being physically active. By adding a service-learning element based on a student-led neighborhood service project, Julie saw that her students developed confidence and learned that they could effect change in their community. Schools across DC took notice and the program expanded citywide. In 1999, America SCORES grew to a national organization. Today, America SCORES has over 8,000 youth who participate in its programs each year, in over 155 public schools in 14 cities in North America—Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, New York, Portland (OR), San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis, and Washington D.C. More than 44,000 urban youth have benefited from the unique programming of America SCORES. 14

Impact National

75% of participants improved their grammar and writing mechanics after participation in our program. Several evaluation strategies were used nationally to measure improvement in language arts. The pre/post creative and expository writing assessments provided statistical information about improvements. Our evaluation strategy also includes questions about literacy on coach and parent/guardian surveys. Taken together all of these results show that students improve their writing skills after participating in SCORES programming.

National

85% of participants increased their cardiovascular capacity. To measure cardiovascular fitness, one of three tests must be implemented with pre- and post-test measurements: a mile run, The Pacer Test or The Mini Cooper. As a result of these measurements, the majority of students increase their physical fitness after participating in SCORES programming.

Coach Edgar Perez Denver

Coach Edgar is a former SCORES student and currently works as a coach in Denver while attending Metropolitan State University of Denver. As a great role model for poet-athletes, Coach Edgar is always telling the kids to “not mess around in school and keep trying your best and you’ll eventually get there.” America SCORES helped provide him with direction, support and role models that helped him set goals and achieve his dream of going to college. His favorite class thus far at Metro State has been Sports Psychology. The teacher is into every sport and is very descriptive about how athletes think.

“If you want something go out and get it. No one is stopping you. The only person stopping you, is you. My advice is that you just go and get it!”
