CAAD STUDENTS' PROJECTS College of Arts, Architecture & Design

In the College of Architecture, Art and Design (CAAD), we offer five undergraduate programsarchitecture, interior design, visual communication, multimedia design and design management. The curriculum in all programs is based on the North American model, which integrates liberal studies with professional education. All our undergraduate students begin their first-year studies in the college's highly effective foundations program. In the upper years, design studios form the core of our undergraduate programs. This is a portfolio book that includes the works of the students exclusively in visual communication, multimedia design, and design management after the foundations program. The works are also only of students in the upper yearssecond, third and fourth.

Description
For this project I chose to work with printmaking by doing alphabet stamps. Since stamps are old style I connected them to the old wooden pencil case and that’s what inspired my packaging material—wood.

Visual Communication
10
Description
Whether we know it or not we might be affecting other people by the decisions we make. This project is an interactive piece for people to see how their decision affect the other person on the other side. Following the written instructions, the players on each side have to create the word by choosing the correct combination of letters so that the words on both sides are spelled correctly.

Visual Communication Vane
12
Description
Tackle both functional and aesthetic qualities. That statement was the birth of Vane. An interactive design that underwent many reformations and alterations, Vane’s main aim is to be a wind recorder. It records the direction and the speed of the wind, an unseen element, and grants it a visual representation—light. Using ultra bright LEDs, Vane responds to the wind by making its lights flicker— the faster the wind, the wilder the flickering. Not to mention, the direction the light chooses to flicker mimics that of the wind. And so, Vane is a cluster of trees that do not physically sway with the wind, but sway using physics.

Visual Communication Al Qassimi Hospital
22
Description
The old Al Qassemi hospital located in Sharjah is now split into two parts: One that is abandoned and another that is still operational. The functional part of the hospital is now used for the treatment of cancer and addiction. The abandoned side was specialized in everything. The government funded the hospital and it was free of charge. A British company initially ran it. Later on, the ministry of health took over. It used to be one of the best hospitals in Sharjah, U.A.E. The project is named the hospital of the dead because there is a myth that says “Whoever goes in never comes out. No information was available on the Internet or secondary research. The information provided above is based on primary research.

Multimedia Design Vertical
26
Description
Vertical takes a contemporary approach to Sylvia Plath’s poem titled “I Am Vertical”. It challenges stereotypical ideas of depression and emotional vulnerability. Her depression is represented through beautiful imagery as she personifies herself to the natural world. However, she feels the acceptance of eventual death and agony of staying alive. She is pulled by dreams of immortality and the everlasting wish to be at peace with herself.

Visual Communication Portrait Painting
58
Description
Oil on canvas, 70cm x 50cm, 2015. This painting was constructed using oil paint and two painting tools— hogs brushes and pallet knives. Everything in the painting has a rough, bulgy texture as a result of picking up paint using a pallet knife and applying it directly onto the canvas. The only parts that were manufactured using hogs brushes (thus have no texture) are the hair and the eye.
