SIX DEGREES 2020
FOREWORD Dr. Varkki Pallathucheril Dean of College of Architecture, Art, and Design
For the first time ever, we find ourselves bidding a virtual farewell to a graduating class from the College of Architecture, Art and Design (CAAD) at American University of Sharjah (AUS).
and engaging critique in order to challenge, inspire and push them to achieve outstanding outcomes such as those selected for this publication.
Certainly, none of us would have imagined that the final semester of this academic year would be delivered as distance learning, nor that our tenth annual Six Degrees exhibition would be held online. While social distancing has brought unique challenges to the end of this class’ journey with CAAD, they have, as always, risen to the occasion and continued to deliver work of the highest standard until the very end.
For the second year, this year’s catalog and exhibition collateral have been designed in-house by our Design Practicum students, taught by my colleague Riem Ibrahim. This group has also taken on the challenge of adapting the Six Degrees exhibition to a virtual platform. This has been more than just a class assignment, and I thank them for their dedication and passion.
This catalog accompanies the online exhibition of work, which has been selected by each of our graduating students. You are invited to peruse this compilation and if a particular work or student intrigues you, please follow up using the contact information provided.
A number of colleagues, led by Associate Dean Zinka Bejtic, have played a key role in planning and organizing this recognition of our graduating students. My thanks go to George Katodrytis, Anijo Mathew, Camilo Cerro, Juan Roldan, Marina Peres and Hala Al Ani. As always, CAAD staff deserve recognition for their valuable support, in particular Yara Libzo, Assistant to the Associate Dean, and Savio Creado, Assistant to the Dean.
This edition is dedicated to the memory of Muhammad Baru, who tragically lost his life in 2017 at the end of his second year in the Bachelor of Architecture program. Baru left behind an indelible impression on many of us and his heartbroken classmates, graduating this year, grieve this loss. The blank catalog spread in his name represents the incomplete project and the emptiness left in us. Our hearts go out to the Baru family on this profoundly sad anniversary. Every CAAD student’s journey is one of extraordinary transformation, one that involves adapting to radically different ways of learning and thinking. Despite the uncertainty of these times, our graduates can have confidence that the knowledge, skills and sensibilities they acquired and honed through application and critical feedback have prepared them well to adapt to and thrive in any situation. Furthermore, they will continue to find support from each other and from the global network of CAAD alumni of which they are now a part.
In closing, let me address our graduating students: I congratulate you and wish you the very best as you take your first steps into the professional design arena; I look forward to hearing of your successes in the future as leaders in the design professions or wherever your journey takes you. Many of our alumni continue to engage with CAAD long after they have graduated. May I extend this invitation to you: whether you are seeking professional mentorship and advice from faculty or returning as a guest lecturer and mentor yourself, CAAD’s doors are always open to you.
Each work presented in this catalog identifies the faculty members in whose course it was produced. My faculty colleagues play a central and indispensable role in the transformational journey of each student through mentorship

Urban Regeneration of Nassriya, Sharjah ARC 501, Prof. Cristiano Luchetti Partner: Akhila Girijan The brief of the project is to maintain the quality of existing housing while enhancing the public realm and social infrastructure. This is done by addressing the needs and specificity of the neighborhoods. One of the challenges is to bring local families back to these neighborhoods without displacing the expatriate population. Our intervention uses sustainability as a strategy to design green and interactive public spaces.

AKHILA GIRIJAN Contemporary Mosque ARC 302, Prof. Faysal Tabarrah The project transcends the traditional boundaries of a mosque and evokes the sense of dissolution towards the Qibla. This happens through procession. The formal language is generated by a set of material studies on dissolving foam. As the visitor enters and moves towards the Qibla, the columns begin to ‘dissolve’ and ‘lessen’. At the same time, more light falls upon the spaces nearing the Qibla due to the increasing skylights in that direction.

JACE MARC FERNANDES Post Oil Exploring ARC 394, Prof. Berenika Boberska Refineries have stood as an icon of energy in the Middle East since the discovery of oil. Its fruits have paved the city and civilization we take for granted. Post Oil Exploring proposes a rehabilitation of the refinery once the oil will run out. With the act of turning the establishment 180 degrees, its memory is retained while giving it a new meaning. What was once polluting the ocean and air, is now filtering ocean water and spraying it onto the dunes. Thus, encouraging the growth of halophilic mangroves.

Passatge Del Barri, Barcelona ARC 401, Prof. Igor Peraza Partner: Ahmed Noeman A marketplace, a housing cluster, and a space for communal gathering. The Passatge Del Barri brings three programs close to the heart of Barcelona’s culture and combines them together to benefit the city in a couple of ways. Firstly, it acts as a node within the area to which users and pedestrians can orient themselves with. Secondly, it bridges the gap over the Ronda Litoral which enables the flow of people in and out of the Barceloneta. The project addresses these issues through the juxtaposition of form. A yingyang, ortho-curvelinear relationship that clearly defines the separated elements while maintaining a homogenous system of parts.

LAIAN ABUSSAUD The Future Was Sand, UAE ARC 501, Prof. George Katodrytis The project reconsiders architecture as an eco-system that mediates between environment and inhabitation. The proposal is inspired from the challenges posed by climate change and how this thread can recondition architecture and its materiality. Sand is used as the main material to inform and reconstruct the environment. A thread now becomes a re-appropriation. This proposal could help solve environmental challenges unless it is too late.
Waste Stadium, Lagos ARC 401, Prof. George Newlands Partner: Shereen Khafagy Our approach to the stadium design is focused on inclusivity. The intention is to create a multifunctional stadium to be used all year long. The project includes an outdoor, indoor and an underground market each specializing in different products. Our intention is to move away from the generic stadium design and to create an environmentally friendly stadium, using a vernacular material palette and recycling site waste.

Waste surgery develops a systematic yet rigorous process of re-mediation that drives the design forward in a site that is one of the world’s largest landfills. The project utilizes 330 pre-cast concrete walls that start as tools in the excavation and re-mediation of the site and with time become the structure for the stadium and facilities. The sports stadium, through a flexible seating system, doubles as theatres, lecture halls and markets.

Salt crystallization and seawater desalination drive the experimentation towards creating a structure that expands horizontally by anchor point along the site. The structural lattice acts as an infrastructure to define the expansion of crystals as a new method of construction. The resulting mass is then transformed to a spatial system of potential use and inhabitation.

Warehouse 61 IDE 301, Prof, Maria Oliver Warehouse 61 was a project solely derived and inspired by a piece of furniture, the Panton Chair. The approach to this project was through the usage of the chair’s form to create repetition and a pattern. Those modules were transformed into a piece that contained many functions, including a gallery, a cafe, pop-up spaces and an office. The elasticity of the piece helped in the formation of it, therefore no attachment methods were required.

AFRA AL ZAROONI Data Visualization DES 39414, Prof. Frederic Gmeiner Partner: Layan Hashem The purpose of the project is to illustrate data as visual expressions. The data shows the erosion of the Santa Barbara coast in California. There are two components to the visualizationthe relief and the projections. The relief abstracts three aspects of the data; height represents the cliff elevation; mound size is water retention, and texture is amount of rainfall. The projection mapping which layers on top of the visualization, created by my partner, focuses on the causes of the erosion.

Error as a Design Tool VIS 406, Prof. Hala Al-Ani We live in a digital age; designers have focused their talents on the tools such as Adobe software. In this project a new tool is explored, namely “Errors, which comes from the idea of code manipulation through the use of image code. By studying image code manipulations in different formats, a manual was created to encourage designers to engage in this new process that often results in systematic yet random outcomes.

HOSNA EBRAHIMI Freedom Dress VIS 202, Prof. Lars Harmsen The freedom dress was designed to show how powerful women are in Iran. Persian women are often portrayed in the media as oppressed with no rights. The reality is very different. The front side of the dress shows the word freedom in Iran and the inside layer includes symbols of freedom. The dress is photographed in front of the freedom tower and the crowded bazaar to accentuate the message.

Tri-cultural Rug VIS 405, Prof. Paula Curran Each culture has its own symbols and meanings. It’s important for other cultures to understand and respect the symbolism of objects. The tri-cultural rug combines the symbols of three cultures: Iran, China, and North America. The two rugs are counterpoised so that one shows cultural appreciation, where the symbols and rules on the rug of three cultures are followed and respected, while the other shows cultural misappropriation, where the rules are not followed and symbolism is disrespected.

KOMAL HABIB Third Culture Kids VIS 405, Prof. Paula Curran Third Culture Kids (TCKs) are people raised in a culture different to that of their parents or guardians. TCKs experience unique social struggles and benefits. They are often very adaptable but also have trouble building long term attachments. In this project, I compiled poetry, articles, and scientific studies of TCKs. The collection is included in a manually produced zine designed to be casual, familiar and informative for TCKs.

Camouflage VIS 202, Prof. Lars Harmsen In this project, I designed and produced a garment that responded to increasing surveillance in our societies. After researching facial recognition software I developed a scarf with repeating faces that can confuse cameras. The scarf is a symbol of modesty and privacy in the Arab world. Therefore, I felt it was a relevant choice for the rebel character who wears it.

SRUTHI NAIR Endangered Species VIS 405, Prof. Paula Curran Every day, species around the planet are facing extinction or endangerment. Their main threat is human activity (poaching, deforestation, coal mining, etc.) The decline in these animals leads to a disruption in the ecosystem. Using dos-Ă -dos binding, this educational magazine aims to educate the youth about legal and illegal exploitation of endangered animals. It also describes the causes for endangerment and measures we can take to prevent further damage.

Anonymous VIS 202, Prof. Lars Harmsen In this project I designed a piece of clothing which prevents the wearer from being recognised by facial recognition cameras and software. As facial recognition software relies on recognising key features like the shape of eyes, nose and lips, I projected faces of famous people (world leaders, businessmen, etc.) and changed the color scheme to make the design more distorted. The distorted figures confuse the software, thereby subverting the surveillance.
