Prepare for a Strong Interview Performance with Research Now The interview is set. What comes next? The more research you can conduct prior to an interview, the better you will be at answering questions in context—and at asking a few questions of your own. Following are four key areas to research, and tips for how to do it.
1. Research the organization. Why—You’ll understand more about your potential position if you first understand your potential employer. For example, a hospital system that has been acquiring other hospitals might be hiring neurologists to fuel their expansion, as opposed to simply replacing a doctor who retired. And where there’s rapid growth, there might be opportunities for leadership, or the need to serve multiple locations. Likewise, a candidate considering work for a new practice group could find that to be very different from starting with a group whose systems were deeply established. Each would have advantages and disadvantages but knowing before the interview would be helpful. Questions to research—How old is this organization? How long have they been in this location? Who are their competitors? What is their reputation? Have they been in the news (and why)? How long have they had neurologists on board—or will you be among the first? If yours will be a research position, how successful have
they been in winning grants, and what has been the focus of the research? How to find the answers—As you might expect, your first stop can be online. If your subject has a well-organized website (this can be hit or miss), you can start with what they say about themselves. To make the best use of the site, watch for tabs that say “In the news” or something similar. This archive of outgoing press releases can be a font of information about building plans, new administrators, research grants, and other topics favored by a public relations department. In addition to the organization’s website, a scan of any articles you find online might fill in more information, while checking an employer review site, such as Glass Door, might reveal more about the experiences of working for this group. Now you’re ready for conversations with mentors, colleagues, and others who may know something about your potential employer. Asking about the organization’s reputation or for direct contacts who are currently or recently employed there might be especially helpful.

2. Research the community.
3. Research the department.
Why—One obvious reason to research the community where your potential employer is located is that you might be living there, and perhaps raising your family there. With that in mind, you don’t need coaching to imagine reviewing data about the neighborhoods and schools. But there’s also a professional reason to research the community. What if you were to discover that yours would be the only neurology practice within 50 miles—how would that impact your employment decision? Or what if you learned there was a large population of individuals who were more prone to certain health issues? Understanding both the business climate and the demographics of the area could influence your thinking about this opportunity.
Why—If you’re interviewing with a smaller practice, this step might be moot, but larger organizations, such as academic centers or hospital systems, will likely have a distinct neurology department. In that case, you’ll be better positioned for your interview if you understand more about this group, and about their relationship to the larger organization. After all, these will be your direct colleagues and likely the head of the department will be your supervisor. In addition to learning about different physicians and their specialties, you may discover something about the group as a whole. For example, if most of your colleagues have been practicing for several decades, you can likely anticipate retirements that would create leadership gaps/opportunities (depending on your perspective).
Questions to research—For personal reasons, focus on qualityof-life issues that matter to you and your family, such as local amenities, safety, and cost of living. From the professional aspect, your questions might cover demographics, the ratio of doctors to patients in the area, the number of physicians with your specialty, and even state funding for health care.
Questions to research—Some of the questions you care most about, such as the department’s plans for the future, are likely to be the least findable pre-interview—although you may gather some hints embedded in things such as their investment in certain equipment or programs. Information that might be easier to find includes the composition of the department (how many neurologists and advanced practice providers, for example), the subspecialties represented on staff, the number of patients served each year, and how many locations the department covers.
How to find the answers—This is another situation where online sources can be hit or miss. Some communities are very active in developing promotional information and others just aren’t. Even so, entering the community name into a search engine is a smart first step, and could provide most of what you need to know. For smaller areas, pay special attention to the chamber of commerce, area newspapers, online blogs from area residents, and other highly local sources. While you’re online, don’t forget to review the state’s information on demographics, poverty, health, or other indicators that might impact your field. If your potential employer has physician recruiters on staff, you may find that they have gathered some of this information already, in anticipation of answering candidate’s questions.
6
How to find the answers—By now, you may have a chunk of this information from having researched the organization. If so, it’s time for a deeper dive. Gather the names of the neurologists currently or recently working with the group and head back to the internet. You’ll likely find that some have LinkedIn profiles, others will have bios embedded in conference agendas, and many or most will have their names on some publications or research. If they are active in AAN committees or programs, you may find relevant information on the Academy’s website. And, of course, they may have been featured in the local media when they started with the group, or for other activities they’re involved in.
4. Research the position.
Using your research in the interview.
Why—This can be the most difficult thing to research, but if you’re at all successful, you’ll have more confidence in the interview. It’s just easier to answer questions about your training or specific skills when you understand the context better.
Once you’ve gathered your information, it’s time to make a strategy for using it in the interview process. Remembering that the information is only a tool will help keep you on track. You don’t want to recite statistics that the department head likely knows by heart—being a know-it-all is hardly the point of this process. On the other hand, if you’re able to refer to something you’ve learned as part of an answer, you’ll give the conversation more depth. For example, when asked how you work with families as part of the care process, imagine being able to say, “One of the things that interested me when I was reading the hospital’s annual report online was the high percentage of recent immigrants you provide care for. Since that’s part of my heritage, with my parents having come here when I was four, I feel I can relate to what those families might be experiencing…”
Questions to research—What would be the primary focus of your work: patient care? Teaching? Research? What would be the next largest slice? Would you have administrative duties? In terms of patient care—would that be inpatient, outpatient, or a mix? What special skills would be put to use (such as reading EEGs)? How many locations would you be serving? What’s the typical salary for this position, here and elsewhere? What are the likely options for advancement? How to find the answers—Three primary ideas jump to mind for such specific questions. The most obvious is to review the job posting with care, on the possibility that it was written with some attention to detail. Another is to simply ask the recruiter if one is involved in this process. You won’t get all of your answers, but he or she will likely share at least some of the information you seek. And a third is to extrapolate from more generalized information found on the AAN website. If, for example, the position would be as a neurohospitalist, you’d find articles in the Academy’s Career Center about the that role; you’d also find possible contacts on the AAN’s neurohospitalist section, who could offer more ideas about your likely job duties. And you’d be able to toggle over to the AAN’s salary calculator to discover what others in similar positions have reported earning. (There’s a cost associated with this offering but if you’re a junior member, access is free.)
Another way to use the research you’ve gathered is by developing your own set of questions. For example, if you see there are only two other neurologists, it makes sense to ask how call is shared, or how APPs are being used in the practice. Likewise, seeing a department with several neurologists might inspire questions about collaboration or administrative roles. One thing’s for certain: knowing more is always best when it comes to something as important as your career. n

Employment Contracts: The Non-compete Clause When was the last time you read a service agreement or contract completely, from top to bottom? In this age of multi-page agreements just to download a phone app, there’s a certain amount of consumer ennui surrounding these documents. Most people would admit to hitting the “accept” button without a second glance at the agreement itself. In terms of a cost-benefit analysis (the cost of using your time to read the agreement vs. the benefit of knowing what it says), hitting that button quickly probably makes sense. But when it comes to your physician employment contract, nothing could be further from the truth. Particularly since your agreement these days almost certainly contains a section that could literally change the course of your medical career down the road: the dreaded non-compete clause.
What is a non-compete? Actually, according to Andy Fadenholz, neurology recruiting specialist with RosmanSearch, Inc., the physician’s non-compete doesn’t have to be dreaded—but it should be expected. Employers use them, he says, to protect against their doctors being recruited away to competing institutions. Having worked to build a
10
practitioner’s reputation and specialty in the local area, they don’t want to see a nearby facility reap the reward of their investment. Hence, the increasingly common use of non-compete clauses restricting the proximity of a physician’s next work setting, for a specified period of time. Luke Campbell, a partner in the Seattle law firm of Montgomery Purdue Blakinship & Austin, works primarily with health care providers such as group practices and individual providers, which brings him into contact with provider employment agreements on a regular basis. In addition to the non-compete clause, he often sees a companion stipulation in the contract, commonly called the nonsolicitation clause. “This could be non-solicitation of their patients, or even their employees,” he notes. “They’re trying to protect those relationships by prohibiting you from interfering with them.” Whether one or both appear in the physician’s contract, Campbell says the non-compete and non-solicitation clauses broadly form what is known as a restrictive covenant—an agreement which restricts you from doing something. While the non-solicitation aspect may be relatively straightforward, the non-compete portion of the contract may take some interpreting. Campbell starts with this primer: “Usually when someone uses the phrase
‘non-compete,’” he says, “they mean a restriction on the work somebody performs. For example, ‘You will not practice medicine.’ That’s a blanket restriction on the type of work you perform. Then there are modifications that can be made: ‘You won’t practice medicine in neurology’; or ‘You won’t practice medicine for one of our competitors’; or ‘within a 20-mile radius of our clinic.’ Basically, what ties those together is the work that’s being restricted.”
Are you likely to encounter a non-compete in your contract? According to Campbell, physician non-competes are proliferating. “I didn’t used to see them as often,” he says, “but now they seem to be uniformly and aggressively used by the employer whenever they can.” This mirrors a trend in non-medical professions, which, ironically, has likely contributed to states starting to restrict the use of non-competes, either through legislative or court processes. The problem has been one of over-reach, with some employers trying to use the non-compete to keep employees from leaving, rather than as a way to protect legitimate business interests. One well-known example in recent times was the case of Jimmy John’s, which tried to restrict their sandwich makers from working at other fast food operations, arguing that they had knowledge about Jimmy John’s that they could share. This was not upheld when the employees complained, and the company had to drop the clause from its hiring agreements. With these two conflicting trends—the proliferation of noncompetes and the restriction of their use—Campbell recommends learning at least the basics of how they’re governed in the state in which you might work. For example, California now restricts their use to such a degree that most employees will not encounter a non-compete in that jurisdiction. Washington state, where Campbell practices, has recently created a less-encompassing, but still restrictive, set of rules that are in the process of being interpreted. This lack of national uniformity is one reason Campbell recommends using an attorney licensed in the relevant state when you seek advice about your employment contract. He notes this might be especially important if you’re coming from a state that limits the use of non-competes, as you could be lulled into forgetting the bite they can have in another jurisdiction.
What to watch out for in your non-compete While non-competes are common, that doesn’t mean they’re harmless, at least for the candidate. Both Fadenholz and Campbell acknowledge that these tools are the employer’s friend, with either neutral or negative consequences for the physician. To keep that outcome on the neutral side of the range, attention should be paid to the key attributes of most non-competes: geographic scope, duration, and specific work restrictions, if any. The stakes are not inconsequential. As Campbell points out, non-competes can fundamentally increase the cost of changing jobs, by requiring you to relocate in order to practice outside the restricted geographic scope. “If you’re in a metropolitan area and you’re banned from working within 20 miles,” he notes, you may be locked out of all the best places to practice in your metropolitan area.” Another cost of the non-compete cited by Campbell is the physician’s loss of negotiating power in the current job. “If they know you can’t make that switch very easily, you’ve lost the leverage of saying you’ll quit if they don’t improve your work conditions.”
It’s difficult to generalize about the “right” geographic range for a non-compete clause to specify, but Fadenholz has seen a pattern based on rural and urban areas. The more densely-populated the area, the smaller the restricted territory might be. Conversely, contracts covering those same urban areas might also hold the longest period for the non-compete. “Let’s say you’re in New York City,” Fadenholz explains. “You might have a five-mile noncompete, but for 30 months. While in Fargo, North Dakota, you might see 30 miles, but for only 12 months. If the non-compete is very focused geographically, we’ve been seeing that they’ll be over a longer period of time, but if it’s a broader area, it’s likely to be shorter.” To complicate matters, Fadenholz warns there’s also an issue to consider in terms of the employer’s locations when they have multiple sites. “When they say 15 miles for the non-compete, is that 15 miles from any of their locations? From just the hospitals the candidate has privileges in? From new places they purchase or build?” Nor are doctors who sign on with smaller private practices immune from this problem. “There are some private groups joining hands with larger institutions,” Fadenholz says. “You have to be aware that signing a non-compete with a private group could turn into something binding with the larger group.”
How to handle the non-compete in your contract If this all sounds pretty discouraging, take heart. You may be able to negotiate some aspects of your non-compete. And, if not, forewarned is at least fore-armed. Knowing the restrictions on your next employment can help you craft a more deliberate career plan that takes into account these limitations. Beginning with negotiation as an option, Campbell reports that he has had some ups and downs on this front. He advises starting with the goal of reducing the geographic scope to allow the candidate to work for a competitor without having to relocate. When that doesn’t work—as it often doesn’t—he recommends asking for extra compensation, perhaps as a signing bonus, to balance things out a bit. “The dynamic goes like this,” he says: “You ask for changes and they say ‘We don’t change anything for anyone.’ But your protestations result in them throwing money at you. And, eventually, if this happens often enough, the employer may get the message that these agreements are hurting their recruiting. It [negotiating] may not always work the way you want, but It’s always worth bringing up.” In Fadenholz’ experience as a recruiter, the best success in modifying an agreement comes from a personal approach. “Ideally, you’d have the conversation in person,” he advises, “although you may have to pick up the phone instead. Just don’t do this over email. When you discuss it, explain the situation. Maybe that you’re excited to get started but you want to ensure you won’t have to pull your kids out of school and relocate if something were to happen.” Some of the successes Fadenholz has seen include ranges that have been reduced so they don’t cover every affiliate of the institution, but are weighted toward the primary places the doctor is working. Both Fadenholz and Campbell note that another option may still be available if the physician signs the non-compete but later needs to leave the employment. For example, they have seen employers waiving non-competes in exchange for non-pursuit of claims— say for wrongful dismissal—by the physician. In less contentious circumstances, the doctor may be able to gain accommodation if

they’re leaving for a smaller practice or for work that doesn’t truly compete with the current employer. In any case, crafting an exit strategy while working under the non-compete is a process that would most likely benefit from the advice of an attorney. Not only do you want to honor your agreement with your current employer to the extent that it’s possible, but you also need to understand that your next employer could hesitate to hire you unless the noncompete is clearly waived.
6 Takeaway Tips About Physician Non-competes 1. Consult with an attorney, or someone else practiced in these documents, to review your contract before you sign.
Moving forward with a non-compete
2. Know your state’s regulations: Are non-competes allowed where you’ll be working?
If the prospect of signing a non-compete concerns you, that’s probably good. Your awareness will help you evaluate the offer more carefully, while also crafting potential exit plans so you’re not caught without options if something doesn’t work out. More than anything, Campbell advises physicians to use the presence of a non-compete as fair warning that taking a medical position is serious business. “Doctors have to stop and adjust their initial thought, which might have been ‘If this doesn’t work, I’ll try another job,’” Campbell says. “Seeing the non-compete gives more weight and consequence to the contract. It means they should pay more attention to the rest of the contract, and to the culture and the fit, to be sure they’re going to be comfortable there.” n
3. Understand the non-compete’s restrictions: Geographic scope, length of time and restricted activities; if these things aren’t clear to you, ask for clarification before you sign. 4. Have an exit plan in mind: If you needed to leave this job unexpectedly, would you be able to work in your current city or would a relocation be required? 5. Remember that the best time to negotiate a change in the non-compete is before you sign the contract (rather than later, when you need to leave). 6. If you do need to leave a position with a non-compete in place, try to bargain for a waiver, perhaps based on the position you plan to take.

Sell Yourself: How to Brag in Interviews Here’s a dilemma that you may have experienced: You have something good you want to tell someone about yourself, but you can’t figure out how to do it without sounding like you’re bragging. In a social setting, that’s merely awkward, but in an interview, the way you handle this situation could mean the difference between getting an offer or leaving the meeting empty-handed. As a medical professional, the problem can seem even more challenging. Never mind feeling uncomfortable promoting yourself, how would you know what to say? Let’s suppose you’ve become accustomed in life as a high achiever. Not only that, but most of those in your cohort are also very high achieving. When everyone around you is performing at a high level, it can be difficult to discern which achievements will seem notable to an interviewer. The solution? Strategic bragging. Not just boasting about yourself and your abilities—because really, that’s seldom appealing. But instead, bringing out your best points and relating them to the goals of the program or employer you’re talking with. When the accomplishments are provided in this context, they spark exchanges about future opportunities, rather than just landing with a thud in the middle of the conversation.
20
If you’re ready to try this approach yourself, read on for an easy process you can adopt.
1. Decide what to brag about This is a quick two-part exercise. First, make a list of things you’re proud of achieving or doing. This can include anything from getting high grades to teaching yourself to skateboard. For the moment, just treat this list as a catchall covering all parts of your life, to ensure that nothing gets missed. To complete the exercise, mark the things on your list that you can imagine talking about in a job interview. Now review this shorter list and ask yourself: Which of these achievements had a positive impact on others, whether they were employers, your community, or peers? As an example, while perfect test scores are achievements to be proud of, they don’t improve circumstances for anyone else. On the other hand, suppose you’re a resident who thought of a topic for rounds, and then gained permission to make that presentation. It’s easy to see that this achievement would have positively impacted others, which makes it a good choice for an interview brag.
2. Clarify your role in the achievement If you don’t focus on your own role as you prepare your story, it’s easy to give credit for your work to “the team.” While it’s important to acknowledge the role others may have played, making them the star of the story doesn’t help interviewers understand your contributions. And after all, it’s you they’re hiring, not the team. Here are two examples to illustrate the point, using the idea of having created a talk for rounds. I saw that parents were struggling when their children were diagnosed with epilepsy, so I discussed the idea of doing a rounds talk with my mentor. He encouraged me, which is what made me do it. I don’t think I would have gone forward without that encouragement, but I’m glad I did. I learned a lot in that process. Yikes. That story is positive, but it doesn’t really convey what you’re capable of, or the impact you made. Here’s the better example: I saw that parents were struggling when their children were diagnosed with epilepsy, so I decided to make a rounds presentation to help my peers understand the impact this situation has on families. To make it feel more real, I interviewed several parents to ask what they had experienced in the first weeks of the diagnosis, and then I brought in some information from the literature about treatment impacts on kids of different ages. My goal wasn’t to be comprehensive in a medical sense, but to give a more human dimension to the situation. I got a lot of good feedback that the session helped the residents feel more connected to the patients. You can see how this story would create a stronger impression, while also providing the interviewer with more options for follow-on questions. And, even though it’s all about you as the narrator, keeping the focus on the steps and outcome helps tone down any sense of boasting.
As you can see, a candidate who is determined to share particular points can usually find a way to do it; the trick is to be creative in finding the opening.
4. To make this process easier, set the stage with your CV Since the employer will have seen your CV before deciding to interview you, this is a natural place to begin the “conversation” about the accomplishments you want to share. To do this, you don’t need a separate category labeled Achievements—although that can be a simple solution. But even the process of adding short descriptions for your primary training and job experiences will increase the chance of being asked questions that let you brag. For example, imagine if you were to make this notation in the section for Residency Training: In addition to treating patients, also developed a talk for rounds about the emotional impact of epilepsy on parents of newly diagnosed children. Although that data might also appear later in the CV’s Presentations section, its initial impact in the residency section will be more immediate. This is a case where the context increases the power of the achievement; reading that you did this on top of your other duties as a resident provides another level of insight about you.
5. More tips for creating effective interview brags As you’re preparing to adopt this strategy, there are just a few things to avoid. First, try not to go into too much detail about the process behind any of your successes. Providing a few details is important as it gives context, but long stories can stifle an interview. Remember that they will ask questions if they want more detail.
3. Find ways to slip your achievements into the conversation
Next, remember not to play down your own initiative. If something was your idea, don’t say “We decided to…” The interviewer has no way of knowing what role you played—and can play in the future—unless you bring that forward.
When preparing for interviews, remember that the questions may not line up perfectly with the information you hope to provide. For example, you might not be asked “Tell us your best achievements.” Rather than waiting for such a direct invitation, you can learn to recognize other opportunities. For example, watch how you could bring forward your experience with the epilepsy presentation:
As the counterpart to claiming your own initiative, you must strive to do so in a way that doesn’t diminish anyone else. This would be a poor choice of words: “Since no one else seemed able to find a solution, I decided….” Instead, this would be a more gracious rephrasing: “We were all challenged by the situation and nothing seemed to be working, so I decided to try a different approach….”
Q: What are your strengths? A: One of my strengths is sharing information. For example… Or perhaps, Q: What are your weaknesses? A: One thing I’ve been working to improve is my comfort with public speaking. For example, last year, I challenged myself to give a talk…
Don’t worry if this seems like a lot to remember. Start by identifying your relatable achievements, and then see if you can find a place for a few of them on your CV. Once that’s done, you’ll feel more confident about engaging the interviewer with your “brags.” Here’s one more thing that might give you courage: Remember that everyone wants to hire someone who can make a difference. By providing that information, you’ll be helping the employer as much as you’re helping yourself. n
