Today’s Course to Explore Brain Health Across the Lifespan

Join five expert speakers from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. today in room 601 for “The New Era of Brain Health Across the Lifespan: How Science and Public Policy Can Improve Neurologic Outcomes for All.”

This riveting course, directed by AAN Brain Health Committee member Joel Salinas, MD, MBA, MSc, FAAN, will lead attendees through the past and present of brain health. Topics will include talks on brain health in every stage of a person’s lifespan—the early years, middle age, and late life—and how science can influence policy through AAN member advocacy.

Participants should become familiar with emerging evidence-based practice for timely and appropriate intervention to reduce risks and enhance protective factors for brain health conditions; learn how to consider development and implementation of interventions and systems-based practice to improve quality of life for those affected by brain health conditions appropriate to each life epoch; and understand ways to collaborate across disciplines, organizations, and initiatives to advance brain health.

Society Spotlight Focuses on Peripheral Nerves

The AAN is partnering with the Peripheral Nerve Society for today’s Society Spotlight session (formerly Invited Science) from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in room 601. Participants will hear updates on the cutting-edge science of hot topics in peripheral nerve disorders from authors giving encore presentations of top research presented at the recent Peripheral Nerve Society meeting. Select research will emphasize basic, clinical, and translational science as they evolve toward a more complete understanding of peripheral nerve disorders with the overall goal of developing more effective prevention and treatment.

Lancet Commission on Epilepsy: A Practical Guide for Non-specialists

In 2019, The Lancet commissioned an international body of epileptologists to provide up-to-date guidance to the non-specialist community on how to optimally care for children and adults with epilepsy. The work is focused on selecting appropriate diagnostic procedures, navigating the initial encounter, and selecting the first or second treatment to optimize outcomes. This session will introduce the information provided in the Commission Report, which is due to be published in 2024.

Is this your first Annual Meeting?

No, it’s not. I’ve been coming since I was a medical student, and then COVID showed up my PGY-4 year so we missed that. But since then I’ve come every year, and this is my second time presenting. This year I did “Time Is of the Essence: Strategies for Improving Stroke Treatment Times.”

Have you enjoyed presenting?

I’m usually a bag of nerves—which is what we are as human beings in essence. But once it starts going and the talk is rolling, I kind of forget all my troubles and I can get over it.

Is there anything you’ve been enjoying this year besides presenting?

I really enjoyed meeting up with old colleagues. I met one of the med students at the hospital I trained—she’s now getting ready to start a neuro-oncology fellowship. It’s good to see what everybody’s doing in their careers and how they’re blossoming and thriving.

Is this your first Annual Meeting?

Yes, this is my first one, and I’m really excited to be here. I was very fortunate that I got to present my research poster Monday. It was really interesting to meet so many people. I’m an incoming resident at the University of New Mexico, so getting this opportunity to meet people so early in my career has been amazing so far.

Is this your first Annual Meeting?

No, this is actually my third. I went to AAN in Boston back when I was a medical student, and then two years ago I went to AAN in Seattle when I was in my fourth year of training, so finishing residency. This one is my first one as an attending.

Do you think your experience of the Annual Meeting has been different as a medical student versus resident versus now when you’re an attending?

Oh, yeah, definitely. You just have different interests over time. And as you go to more conferences, you kind of learn what to expect.

Was there anything in particular you enjoyed this year?

Each day is different. I really enjoyed the plenary session with Dr. Sanjay Gupta. I thought that was really interesting, just to hear his story and about preventative neurology. And then also the one on the glymphatic system—really excellent. The ongoing research is so new and fascinating. 1

What else have you enjoyed?

Other than academics, I loved the paint and wine session and the HeadTalks fashion walk. It has been a perfect balance of academics, relaxation, and fun. It’s just inspiring, meeting people who are leaders in their field. I hope to come again.

Nearly 200 Make Strides Towards Cures at Tuesday’s Run/Walk for Research

Nearly 200 Annual Meeting attendees laced up their tennis shoes early Tuesday morning for a good cause.

The 5K Run/Walk for Brain Research is a popular Annual Meeting event that raises money to support research into cures. This year’s event took place at Denver’s City Park, a large green space that contains the Denver Zoo, the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, and various playgrounds and trails.

Despite the rainy weather, a good time was had by all. Erin Finn, MD, took first place, while Brian Dahlben, MD, and Mamdouh Sedhom, MD, PhD, followed in second and third place respectively. Thanks to the 2024 sponsors of the Run/Walk for Brain Research.

2024 Summer Conference to Focus on Autoimmune Neurology

Registration is now open for the AAN Summer Conference, set to take place July 19 and 20 in Atlanta, GA, and online. The two-day conference will include programming on autoimmune neurology with special focus on the intersection with neuroinfectious disease, led by directors Anastasia Zekeridou, MD, PhD, from the Mayo Clinic and Stacey Clardy, MD, PhD, FAAN, from the University of Utah.

“Autoimmune neurologic disorders can manifest with symptoms and signs from any and every level of the nervous system making this relevant to any practicing neurologist as they will come across patients with neurologic autoimmunity,” said Zekeridou. “In addition, this year we are also exploring neuroinfectious diseases, their diagnosis, and clinical presentations as they can have a phenotypic overlap with neurologic autoimmunity or be encountered in patients with autoimmunity on immunosuppression.”

“This will be an open space that we can discuss research (clinical, translational or basic) with each other and also the leaders in the field of autoimmune neurology and neuroinfectious diseases,” added Clardy. “This will be an event where we can all collectively brainstorm future directions to advance the field—as we have MUCH to accomplish in all areas of research.”

Upon completion of the conference, participants should be able to:

• Recognize and diagnose neurologic autoimmunity and infections affecting the central nervous system

• Interpret diagnostic testing for neurological autoimmunity

• Avoid neurologic autoimmunity misdiagnosis and recognize the pitfalls

• Manage and treat neurologic autoimmune disorders and mimics, including common neuroinfectious and autoinflammatory mimics
