Industry Therapeutic Updates
Highlight Pipeline Progress, Updates
Among the variety of Annual Meeting learning opportunities designed to arm attendees with the knowledge and tools to improve patient care are Industry Therapeutic Updates (ITUs). These popular sessions have been a mainstay of the Annual Meeting for many years, offering a unique chance for the Academy’s valued industry partners to highlight progress and updates within their respective pipelines and current therapies for patients with neurologic disease. This year sees some exciting new changes in how attendees can engage with this important content.
Evening ITUs
Catch these programs Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday evenings at the nearby Omni, Westin, and Aloft hotels beginning at 6:00 p.m.
NEW! Lunchtime ITU Slots Added
In addition to being able to attend evening ITUs, attendees can catch ITU sessions over the lunch hour in the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center on Saturday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. The additional time slots will allow meeting attendees to more easily view multiple ITUs throughout the week.
Livestreaming in the Virtual Platform
Select ITUs will be livestreamed in the virtual Annual Meeting platform during their regularly scheduled times only. They will not be available to revisit after the live session, so attendees are encouraged to connect with ITU hosting organizations for further details on any content they may have missed. Please note that it is optional for ITU hosting organizations to stream their content into the platform, so not all ITUs will be viewable in this manner.
HOW TO FIND ITUs
To learn more about the ITU lineup:
• Use the AAN Conferences mobile app to quickly search schedules; sessions are clearly delineated as being industry related and include the hosting company’s name
• Connect with hosting companies on-site in their exhibit space

Picture This: You and A.B. Baker with Brain Casting
Throughout the Annual Meeting, you can venture to the North Lobby to take a selfie of you and your friends with the stunning photo of A.B. Baker gingerly holding a casting of the brain’s vascular system—the same art that is featured in the lobby of the AAN’s headquarters in Minneapolis. Share your photos on social using #AANAM and #NeurologyProud. Additionally, there will be a large social wall for attendees to try to spot their tweets and daily social influencers will be highlighted in this area as well.
The photo is the result of a request in 1964 that Baker made to Arthur Klassen, MD, and Paul Silverstein, MD, who were residents in the neurology training program at the University of Minnesota under Baker. In 2012, Klassen provided this account of the remarkable image produced in the Medical Art Department of the University Medical Center.
“Cerebral vascular disease was Dr. Baker’s special interest, and he had succeeded in establishing a very large NIH-funded Stroke Center at the University of Minnesota. He then wondered if we could produce a cast of the cerebral arteries to be used as a visual aid (a request that was not to be ignored!). After some research, a product was found that would harden rapidly after being injected at post mortem into arteries of any organ, permitting the organ tissues to be subsequently dissolved leaving an arterial cast.
“Under existing post mortem examination protocols at that time, we were given permission to remove the brains and the attached cerebral arteries from two individuals undergoing post mortem exams. The brains were suspended in a formalin solution and cannulas were secured in the carotid and vertebral arteries. The arteries were then flushed of blood until clear fluid was seen emerging from the cerebral veins. Simultaneous injection of the carotid and vertebral arteries with a freshly prepared liquid epoxy mixture was then performed. Over several weeks’ time the brain tissue surrounding the now hardened arterial cast was slowly dissolved with a caustic solution leaving the vascular cast. Dr. Silverstein and I then proudly presented the results of our labors to Dr. Baker.
“He was clearly pleased and actually smiled. You should understand that it was not his custom to be very demonstrative in praising students or residents. It was enough that he was very supportive and encouraging of projects I undertook while finishing my residency and during my post-residency fellowship.
“Unfortunately, the brain vessel cast, which had been kept in a brown cardboard box in Dr. Baker’s desk, disappeared sometime after Dr. Baker retired from the university.”

Check out Today’s Hub Highlights for Collaborative Learning
Step outside the traditional classroom and into the world of unconventional learning with eight Hub areas. Each Hub offers unique educational and networking opportunities. Engage in collaborative learning, gain actionable tools for your patients and career, and find your community. Here are today’s highlights:
ACADEMIC HUB
Southeast Lobby: Level 1
Handling Tough Conversations
3:00 p.m.–3:45 p.m.
AAN Board member Brenda Banwell, MD, FAAN, will discuss how to approach difficult conversations with faculty, staff, and institutional leaders. Discussion points will include strategies to engage stakeholders in a manner conducive to constructive rather than emotive dialogue, while still acknowledging the inherent importance of personal perspectives. Discussion will include real-world examples.
Strategic Planning for Academic Departments: A Case Study
4:00 p.m.–4:45 p.m.
Rebecca Veselka, MBA, will walk through the strategic planning methods recently employed in the Department of Neurology at Indiana University. Participants will gain insight into resources that were used, approaches that worked well, lessons learned, and pitfalls to avoid.
HEADTALKS
Northwest Lobby A: Level 1
Music and Neurology: When Music Sings, the Brain Listens, and the Heart Modulates
11:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
With students from the New England Conservatory of Music, Kamal R. Chemali, MD, will explore the mechanisms of music perception by the brain and will review some of the ways music parameters can modulate the autonomic nervous system. Incorporated in the lecture are musical performances that will highlight some of the scientific explanations.
The Neurology of Timekeeping and the Art of Swiss Watchmaking
2:30 p.m.–3:30 p.m.
LEADERSHIP UNIVERSITY
Room 154
Managing Up and Down
12:00 p.m.–1:00 p.m.
Khan
What does timekeeping mean to you? Muhib Khan, MD, FAAN, will discuss the neuroscience of circadian rhythms and your biological clock, along with the history of Swiss watchmaking and the components of a mechanical watch, including a live demonstration from local watchmaker Jack Kurdzionak and MIT Electrical Engineering Professor Gerald Sussman.
According to Deborah Hall, MD, PhD, FAAN, managing up requires first identifying the leadership structure and “movers” (people of influence) within one’s institution and/or specialty/national stage. Leaders also need to have an understanding and/or aligning of their own strategic vision with the institution’s or program’s vision. Ultimately identifying allies and people who influence personal career or leadership roles to advance said career or strategic vision and missions of group.
Hall
Using Emotional Intelligence to Cultivate Constructive Communication
1:00 pm.–2:00 p.m.
Join executive coach Robin Stubblefield, MA, ACC, as she delves into why it is so important for leaders to develop and hone communication skills.

What Are Your Colleagues Saying?
Dara Jamieson, MD
Neurologist, Weill Cornell Medicine, New York, NY
AAN member since 1983
What brings you to the Annual Meeting?
I’m directing a course on neuroimaging Saturday night. I like the intellectual stimulation, seeing my friends again, visiting the city—especially Honolulu. I bought an apartment in Honolulu for the express reason of having a party during the Annual Meeting.
What advice would you give to someone attending for the first time?
There’s an amazing amount of information to be gained. You can’t go to every single session, but you should make an effort to go to sessions that are not necessarily in your area of expertise.
Rafael Matamoros, MD
Chief resident, San Jose, Costa Rica
Second-time attendee
What brings you back this year?
This is my last year of residency, so I want to get everything I can. Next year I will put everything I learned here into practice.
Ehud Lavi, MD
Neuropathologist, Weill Cornell Medicine, New York, NY
Why should people come to the Annual Meeting?
It’s good for the social interaction. If you’re looking for jobs, it’s a great way to meet a lot of people.
Paola Rodriguez, MD
Third-year resident, San Jose, Costa Rica
First-time attendee
What brings you to the Annual Meeting?
I’m about to start my third year of residency. It feels like the right moment to take advantage of all the presentations and posters and research.
How will you decide what to attend?
People told me to stick to the basic science presentations and talks in my area of interest. But they also told me to go to things that have to do with neurology but are fun like the Paint and Wine sessions and the video game talks and the 75th anniversary party.
Gulshan Yunisova, MD
Neurologist, Istanbul University, Türkiye
First-time attendee
What are you looking forward to?
Research, innovation, courses in my area of neuromuscular disorders and ALS. How were you affected by the earthquake?
It was a massive disaster and so many people lost friends and relatives. I am from Azerbaijan, so I do not have family in Türkiye. Istanbul was not affected as much, but now they are estimating that an earthquake will hit Istanbul in the next year or two, so there is big anxiety in Istanbul.

Visit UCNS Booth for Subspecialty Certification and Accreditation Information
Come to booth #864 in the Exhibit Hall to learn more about physician certification and accredited fellowship program opportunities through the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties (UCNS). As neurology’s recognized certifying and accrediting body for emerging subspecialties, the UCNS currently provides accreditation and/or certification for the neurologic subspecialties of Autonomic Disorders, Behavioral Neurology & Neuropsychiatry, Clinical Neuromuscular Pathology, Geriatric Neurology, Headache Medicine, Interventional Neurology, Neonatal Neurocritical Care, Neuroimaging, Neurocritical Care, and Neuro-oncology. The UCNS has over 200 accredited fellowship programs and 3,000 certified physicians in the United States and Canada.
Staff will be on hand in the booth to share information and answer questions about UCNS certification, continuous certification requirements, fellowship program accreditation requirements, and accredited subspecialty fellowship opportunities.
The UCNS will also have representatives available at the Faculty and Trainee Reception on Monday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. to answer questions and provide information for trainees about UCNSaccredited subspecialty fellowship programs. Representatives will also take part in a panel presentation in the Trainee and Educator Hub at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday giving program coordinators an opportunity to learn more and ask questions about the UCNS accreditation process.
