Commitment to Cures Gala to Celebrate and Support Brain Disease Research
Commitment to Cures, the annual American Brain Foundation gala that galvanizes the neurology community around the crucial need to support research, takes place on Wednesday evening at the Omni Boston Hotel at the Seaport.
Jim Cramer, migraine advocate and host of CNBC’s “Mad Money,” will emcee an inspiring evening celebrating research that will feature stories from people living with brain disease and updates on our latest research studies. Peter Frampton will be honored with the Ambassador Award for elevating public awareness of inclusion body myositis and Arianna Huffington will receive the Public Leadership in Neurology Award for raising public awareness of the importance of sleep and brain health through her writing, speaking and by founding Thrive Global, a company that uses science to improve mental and physical well-being.
The event will begin with a cocktail reception at 6:00 p.m. followed by a seated dinner and program at 7:00 p.m.
The 2022 Gala in Seattle was the Foundation’s most successful to date, raising over $874,000 for brain disease research. Over the years, the Commitment to Cures Gala has recognized many public figures for bringing the public’s attention to brain disease, including actor and comedian Seth Rogen and his wife, Lauren Miller Rogen; Sidney Crosby; Emilia Clarke; Khloé Kardashian; Cindy McCain, and others. We look forward to celebrating the progress we have made, as well as our continuing work of raising awareness about the importance of brain disease research. Ticket sales have ended, but you can support Commitment to Cures with a gift at AmericanBrainFoundation.org/DonateC2C. All ticket sales and proceeds go to funding brain research.

What Are Your Colleagues Saying?
Amber Anderson, NP Nurse practitioner, Durham, NC First-time attendee
Why did you come to the Annual Meeting?
I’m in a neurology residency program for advanced practice providers at Duke University, so this is my first time to learn more about neurology and be empowered by other people with the same interests.
Heba Al-Sahlani, PA
Physician assistant in neurology residency program for advanced practice providers at Duke University
First-time attendee
What has been the highlight of the Annual Meeting for you so far?
Everyone is showcasing what they know so eloquently. We don’t always get the spotlight on clinicians like we have here. As we’re learning, we sometimes forget to take a step back and look at the big picture of why we’re doing this. Coming here helps us remember our focus.
William A. Tosches, MD, FAAN Associate professor, Boston University AAN member since 1972, attended almost every Annual Meeting
What keeps you coming back?
First of all the learning. Secondly, catching up with people. I try to go to talks on topics I don’t see as often—now it’s pediatric and adolescent neurology. Where I am now it’s mostly geriatric. I was in practice for 41 years in general neurology and now four years at a university in general neurology. I’m on a panel tomorrow on general neurology and I served on the Presidential Task Force on General Neurology. I always tell my students that you can’t be a good specialist unless you’re a good general neurologist.
Mays Khweileh, MD
Epilepsy fellow, Duke University
Second AAN Annual Meeting
What brings you to the Annual Meeting?
The AAN is the best opportunity for us to get to know all the updates. The speakers are so well chosen. They know exactly what to tell us. In one hour, you get what you need to know. Last year I left Seattle so passionate again to help my patients.
14 Wednesday, April 26, 2023 • Annual Meeting Daily JOIN THE CONVERSATION! SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS AT #AANAM.
Christian J. Camargo, MD Assistant professor, Miller School of Medicine—University of Miami
2019 recipient of AAN McKnight Clinical Translational Research Scholarship in Cognitive Aging and Age-related Memory Loss
What are you excited about at the Annual Meeting?
My mentee is presenting a poster on Wednesday, and I am the senior author. PET scans can detect amyloid and increase diagnostic accuracy, which influences treatment. The IDEAS study looked at this, but with the limitations that only Medicare participants were included and the participants were mostly White people. For what we’re calling the New IDEAS study, with philanthropic funding from a neurosurgeon, we were able to recruit people in Miami, where 85 percent are Hispanic and a lot of people don’t have Medicare. Our funder’s wife was able to have a PET scan. They thought she had Alzheimer’s, but her scan was negative. She had an issue with her pacemaker—the battery ran out. They fixed the battery and she got better.
You worked with Dr. Ralph Sacco?
Yes, we were all very sad to lose him. He was such a big presence as your chairman but also as your personal supporter. Our department is really suffering, like we all are. He would always be personally pushing me as a motivation, in a practical, mentoring way. He was nothing if not an advocate of young trainees like me. That’s why I’m trying to mentor trainees now in my research.
Christian Rainey, MD Resident, Jacksonville, FL First-time attendee
What are you looking forward to at the Annual Meeting?
I’m really interested in hearing updates from the national experts. That’s really cool. Everyone has their own unique spin on things that you can’t get from textbooks. It’s next level.

Making Strides Towards Cures at Tuesday’s Run/Walk for Research
Both runners and walkers turned out yesterday morning along the beautiful, scenic Boston waterfront at Castle Island to make strides—both physically and financially—to support research into cures during the annual 5k Run/Walk for Brain Research. A good time was had by all during the trek for a good cause to raise money for brain research. Thanks to the 2023 sponsors of the Run/Walk for Brain Research.
