FOUNDER’S LETTER A friend of mine refers to getting his hair cut as ‘seeing his therapist’. And in a world in which boys and men often feel pressured to live up to outdated ideas of masculinity, barbershops can play a nurturing and supportive role in helping men find and express their identities. It is also a place where conversations naturally flow, making the barbershop a catalyst for new ideas to form.

1

I believe the barber’s chair is a natural setting to start conversations that elicit change – a space where men feel comfortable to open up and where discussions take place that create opportunities for innovation. As barbers and stylists, men come to you before dates, job interviews, celebrations, and many important occasions in their lives. As creatives, imagining new ways to rethink old ideas and supporting men to express themselves is at the heart of what you do, and it’s been at the very core of American Crew since the beginning.

This theme of change will continue to shape American Crew and our industry in the year to come and I look forward to another year that is rich with innovation, learnings, and growth.

In the 2022 issue of Changing Times, we tell the stories of the barbers and stylists who are reshaping both our industry and our mindsets, celebrating the artists who are not afraid to challenge outdated ways of thinking and who embrace innovation to evolve techniques, styles, services and the society at large.

THE FIRST FEMALE ALL-STAR ON CUTS AND CREATIVITY W/ 2021 ALL-STAR WINNER STEPHANIE PFALZGRAF It was just over a year ago that American Crew, for the first time in history, crowned a female barber to be the 2021 All-Star Competition winner. Melbourne-based Stephanie Pfalzgraf is a true creative force whose unique outlook and artistic certainty saw her create a flawless, yet edgy cut that left the judges speechless. The vision behind her cut was to challenge gender status quo, and celebrate diversity. Despite making waves in the world of barbering, men’s hair is one of many mediums Stephanie uses to let her creativity flow.

4

Not always a barber, the young star who hails from Germany, started out in graphic design and has always used a variety of mediums to explore topics that are meaningful to her. Having first fallen for the barber scene in 2016, these days you will find her crafting cuts at Melbourne’s Kings Domain Barbershop. We had a coffee with Stephanie to talk about her winning look, masculinity, and what lays behind the multifaceted artist’s creative process.

THE CREATIVE PROCESS You are an artist who has worn many hats, how do you know where to go next in your creative journey? What are some of your biggest learnings? What stands out to me in my life so far is that when you get lost for a little bit you just have to trust the process and, if you do, you’ll end up right where you’re meant to be. In the past three years, I’ve learnt that loss and uncertainty bring a lot of clarity and that it’s good to get uncomfortable - that’s where personal growth starts. I’ve also realised that you shouldn’t wait for the right time. Pretty much every day brings new opportunities for all of us. We get handed twentyfour hours on a silver platter every day and there is no perfect moment - all you have is now.

STEPH’S CREATIVITY HOT-TIPS 1. Get lost a little and trust the process 2. The perfect moment is now 3. With a solid foundation, there is no limit Where or who do you look to for inspiration? I don’t look particularly to certain sources of inspiration to fuel my creativity, instead my inspiration is pretty much a reflection of my own life, of our society and the world I experience. I do have big names in the industry I look up to, like Eugene Souleiman, but I would say I get the most inspiration from my friends and everyone I’ve worked with. I’m really grateful for everyone in the industry I’ve crossed paths with and for everyone who shared their knowledge with me.

AMERICAN CREW

THE WINNING LOOK Tell us about your All-star look, what made your cut so unique? I wanted to create an effortless look, that showcased the individual without the limitation of gender and bias. My model William has beautiful natural curls, strong but also more delicate facial features which I wanted to highlight.

CHANGING TIMES

Yes indeed which is beautiful to see. I think people of my generation and younger are starting to free themselves from society’s norms and expectations. Masculinity is something we got taught when we were really young but it’s simply a concept and I call it a two-dimensional way of thinking. I believe right now we are at a point where we are letting go of old beliefs, the lines are starting to slowly blur and this is really exciting to see.

How has American Crew supported you? How did their products help you create your look?

WHERE TO NEXT

American Crew has helped me to trust my visions even more. When you create, what you need is a solid foundation, which American Crew provides. The products are very versatile and I enjoy playing around and mixing different products together and pushing them further than what they are typically used or made for.

My big ambition for 2022 is to keep creating, not just hair. I know that this is just the start of something great and I can’t wait for what is to come. What’s meant to be will always be, and I’m going for it.

You’ve mentioned exploring a greater diversity in men’s hair, tell us why this topic is important? Do you think men are more open to experimenting with different looks and pushing boundaries of ‘manliness’ or masculinity?

What are your big goals or ambitions for the year ahead?

Do you have any last tips for your fellow creatives? There are no limits when it comes to creating. All you need is a solid foundation and to not wait for the perfect moment.

REWRITING MODERN MASCULINITY W/ AMERICAN CREW

But the year is 2022 and as modern masculinity and male mental health are at the forefront of many important conversations, it’s time to rewrite what it means to be a man. As barbers, we play an important role in a man’s individual style and, in many ways, we also act as off-the-record therapists for our clients. As such, we have a responsibility to make sure that our barbershops are safe places for men to have vulnerable conversations and express themselves creatively with haircuts and styles that represent their authentic selves, free of the archetypal stereotypes of ‘masculinity.’ In redefining masculinity in the modern age, we first need to understand what this charged word represents. Taking a glance back at its origin, courtesy of the Oxford Dictionary, masculine is defined as ‘having qualities or appearance traditionally associated with men’ followed by a toxic slew of words such as ‘macho’, ‘red-blooded’, ‘laddish’ and ‘muscular’. It’s no wonder men have felt immense pressure to hide their emotions and dismiss self-care and grooming rituals when society tells them to equate their worth with a tough surface. The traditional masculine “look” has historically been synonymous with haircuts that call for minimal upkeep, little creative expression and zero personal style. But within the realm of modern masculinity, it’s time we encourage men to embrace their unique personalities through experimental cuts, styles and colour and allow men to express themselves freely, without gendered shame. When it comes to this movement, barbers are in the perfect position to begin conversations that can make a difference. We spoke with Omar de Silva, a passionate mental health advocate and the owner of Melbourne’s Men+Co barbershop, to get his perspective on modern masculinity and how he has created a safe space for his clients to express themselves within his barbershop.

14

Barbers have always had a unique front-row seat into the male psyche and the ever-changing notion of what it means to be a man. On the surface, the benefit of a trip to the barbershop may seem like it’s maintenance or a new look, in reality men want much more from their cut. Whether that be expressing their creative flair, experimenting with new sides of their personality or to gain a new sense of confidence, this traditionally isn’t something men have chosen to express, in fear that by taking an interest in their appearance they would be deemed ‘unmanly.’

AMERICAN CREW

CHANGING TIMES

“As men, it can often be easier to talk about some of the trickier things when we don’t need to look them dead in the eye - having another focus point around the conversation (the haircut) can make it much easier for everyone involved and naturally lead to deeper chats.” When asked about whether barbers should be offered more training on how to broach sensitive subjects with their clients, Omar agreed wholeheartedly, revealing that during the pandemic his staff took part in a Mental Health First Aid course, an incredible initiative that we can only hope will become common practice in barbershops in the next few years. “There’s so much potential to turn the barbershop into a place of genuine social impact through simple conversations.” This is a sentiment that we at American Crew are passionate about, which is why in November of last year, we hosted the American Crew MASC., a panel discussion held in Men+Co that dissected and opened up important conversations around modern masculinity. The MASC. panel featured a line-up of renowned barbers, including 2021 All-Star winner Stephanie Pfalzgraf of Kings Domain, Gary McKenzie of Mr Meddler, Collin Allingham of Sweeney Todds, as well as special guest speaker, progressive fashion designer, Shayne Tino, who each spoke candidly on what modern masculinity meant to them. All speakers were unanimous in agreeing that the barbershop should be and is becoming a safe haven for men to be open and vulnerable, with Gary stating simply that it’s a “great place to be listening to men, really listening.” We still have a way to go as a society to rewrite masculinity and rid it of its negative roots, but it’s safe to say that the male grooming industry is making leaps and bounds towards normalising the conversation around men’s health and creating a safe place for greater self-expression. NEW BARBERING SCHOLARSHIP OFFERS REFUGEES A FRESH START W/ AARON CHAN FROM KINGS DOMAIN

18

AMERICAN CREW

CHANGING TIMES

When Aaron Chan first opened Kings Domain Barber Shop almost nine years ago, it was a barbershop with a simple mission: to offer clients modern barbering and a cold craft beer. Located in the affluent inner-city suburb of South Yarra, the barbershop brought together convenience and discreet luxury, quickly gaining itself a cult following. Kings Domain’s success has seen the opening of an additional six stores across Melbourne, home to a clan of award-winning barbers, but Aaron is far from resting on his laurels. In addition to running seven successful barber shops, he felt that he had something more to offer his community. So, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and its subsequent lockdowns, amid a time of mass uncertainty for business owners, Aaron got creative. He began to develop the Kings Domain Academy - an academy for aspiring barbers, as well as the subsequent Kings Domain Refugee Scholarship Program. “Training the next generation of barbers has always been a big focus for us at Kings Domain. With the barbering industry and community really gaining momentum here in Australia, we want to make sure we are doing our bit to ensure the standard of training and education continually improves not just at Kings Domain but across the board.” Shortly after the launch of Kings Domain Academy, Aaron realised that he’d created the perfect platform to give back to those within the community. With this in mind, he considered where he should be focusing his attention. “Reading about current international news and events is what helped us work out what we needed to do,” he says, ultimately deciding his focus should be on offering help to refugees and asylum seekers, who have faced unfathomable hardships in their life. “Most of us here in Australia are so lucky to have the opportunities that we do, and to be able to help others that don’t should be a given.” With this notion in mind, he embarked on his new venture, the development of the Kings Domain Refugee Scholarship Program. The program would offer two applicants per year a full paid scholarship to the Kings Domain Program, equipping them with the skills to become a fully-qualified barber within six months, a life-changing initiative for many refugees and asylum seekers. “This intensive course teaches them everything they need to know from cutting, shaving, colouring, barber shop operations and how to work in a team. The refugee program offers a full scholarship to the selected individuals as well as a full tool kit from our sponsors at Excellent Edges and Turnleys, the total value of the scholarship is over $10,000 and gives the successful applicant the opportunity at a fresh start in life.” With so many balls up in the air, we probed Aaron on how he is managing to juggle it all, to which he quips back, “Good question!

19

When I work it out, I will let you know.” He then pays due to his colleagues, that he refers to as family. “To be honest it’s all about the team both on the floor and in the office that makes this possible, no one person could ever make all of this happen.” While Aaron has paved his way within the barber community as a unique industry leader, his business stands to do so much more than provide male grooming services. Most inspirational, is his fervent devotion to bettering his community and giving back to those in need. When asked why it is so important to create awareness around these social and ethical causes, Aaron expressed the need for initiatives like this, in order to create a sense of unison and belonging. “For me this is so important because I feel like everyone should always feel welcome, it doesn’t matter if you are in a barber shop, in a new city or a different country. We need to accept one another for who we are no matter where we are from. Creating awareness around social and ethical issues worldwide is key for acceptance and our future.” It’s evident that the future of Kings Domain Refugee Scholarship Program is bright, with an upcoming launch date of July of this year. When asked what’s next for the program, Aaron was optimistic. “The sky’s the limit”, “as we grow, so will the opportunities we offer to the community.”

CUTS TO KEEP YOUR Throughout the decades, the male grooming industry has seen the rise and fall of countless hairstyles and trends. From the return of the notorious ’80s mullet to the classic crew cut of the ’20s, when it comes to the next big hair trend, barbers are always first on the style scene.

STEPHANIE PFALZGRAF: KINGS DOMAIN BARBERSHOP, MELBOURNE

LUKE MUNN: HAVACHAT BARBERSHOP, ADELAIDE

According to the 2021 American Crew All-Star winner and barber Stephanie Pfalzgraf, it’s time to dial the clock back a decade or two because, in her words, “the 2000s are back, baby.” As seen on the runways of Paris Fashion Week, Stephanie predicts that the mod haircut, in various lengths, is back in a big way this year. And on the return of long, lustrous locks, she predicts that sweeping curtain fringes and trending K-pop hairstyles will dominate in 2022. Fret not, if your mane is lacking in length, Stephanie assures us that the clean buzz cut is still very much in style.

Crowned Men’s Hairdresser Of The Year in AHFA21, we can trust in the illustrious Luke Munn to let us in on the top hair trends of 2022. Luke confirms that buzzcut season is upon us, predicting that we will see an abundance of men opt for a tight-fade buzz cut. If that’s not your thing, many men are opting to let their mane flourish, with a boom in heavily textured locks and length on the horizon. Last, but certainly not least, Luke reminds us that the mullet remains a trend that lives to see another year.

EYE ON IN 2022 With a new year upon us, we chatted with three renowned barbers and the god of grooming himself, American Crew’s Founder David Raccuglia, to get the scoop on their predictions for the top malegrooming trends to watch out for in 2022.

21

DAVID WIESELMANN: WIESELMANN SALON, MELBOURNE

DAVID RACCUGLIA: FOUNDER OF AMERICAN CREW

A true veteran of the Australian hairdressing industry, David Wieselmann has been trend-spotting since his salon’s opening in the early ’70s. In 2022, he predicts that men will indeed be embracing shoulder-length looks and relive the ’80s with shaggy styling and natural textures. When it comes to the colour of the moment, David forecasts a year dominated by every shade of blonde under the sun.

Being the founder of American Crew, a grooming pioneer, a salon owner and a renowned photographer, David understands the ever-evolving category of men’s hair better than most. His trend predictions for 2022? David predicts that long, loose styles with unstructured, naturally-textured and looser-looking shapes that are effortless but still aesthetically pleasing are on the horizon. In his own words, he says “The men’s category has reached a place where there’s so much diversity. This is really the first time that we’ve had the opportunity to celebrate many different looks because for once, it’s not about trends, it’s about style and adapting to one that defines you.”

TAKE A RISK, BITE THE BULLET AND JUST GO FOR IT BUSINESS ADVICE W/ LUKE MUNN 22

Luke Munn is a barber who barely needs an introduction. Having been named the global winner of the 2020 American Crew All-Star Challenge, only to be crowned ‘Men’s Hairdresser Of The Year’ at AHFA last year, Luke is a rapid-fire success story. However, Luke’s meteoric rise has been a lesson in taking business risks and biting the bullet. The young barber has just swung open the doors of his first barbershop back in his hometown in Adelaide. If he could give one piece of advice for anyone starting out it’s ‘just go for it’, so we had a chat to Luke to get into the depths of how to open a barbershop for the first time.

Can you tell us about your journey from starting out in the industry to opening your first salon? Early days started at The Barbery Academy here in Adelaide where I was mentored by some of the best in the industry. That was back in 2017 and since then it’s been a crazy journey. After completing my barbering certificate, I made sure to dive headfirst into doing anything and everything I could to allow myself the best opportunity in becoming the stylist I wanted to be. From those early days I always knew that one day I wanted to have my own salon. Fast forward to 2020, I was crowned the AllStar global winner which has been an amazing experience and still to this day it sounds weird saying it. 2021 was another crazy year working with some of the best in the industry and focusing more on educating and creating content. It was then that I won the AHFA 2021 Men’s Hairdresser Of The Year. And now I’m here finally starting that journey as a salon owner. February 1st, 2022, Havachat Barbershop opened its doors. It’s a small, two chair studio nestled away in the beautiful suburb of Dulwich in Adelaide. What were your biggest apprehensions about opening your own business? I think the biggest apprehension for most people when starting their own business is actually just doing it and getting to the point that you can open the doors and trade. I found that once I reached that first day of trade everything just felt natural. There are always those fears with new business in regards to client retention and so on but I feel like you need to trust in your ability.

LUKE’S TIPS TO GET YOUR BUSINESS NOTICED ON SOCIAL MEDIA 1. POST POST POST, get your content out there. The more content you’re creating the more engagement you’re going to get back. 2. D on’t over-think your content, or doubt that it’s good enough. 3. T he more you post, the more you’ll learn what people enjoy seeing, and what they are engaging with more. What about the importance of branding? Do you think salons need to have something that makes them unique? Absolutely, I think it is really important for salon owners to make sure their salon stays unique but without trying too hard to be different from others. The most important thing is to stay true to yourself and the brand you’re trying to build. In doing that you will inherently become unique and stand out. What about your salon? What makes it unique? Self-expression and exclusivity underpin the concept of my salon. I wanted to create a space where I feel like I can express myself and where others feel comfortable opening up. It’s all in the name really - “have a chat”. From an aesthetic point of view, I wanted to create an environment that’s

contemporary but that still has that barbershop feel. I only have two chairs in my salon and we are entirely appointment based. This allows me to create more of a community and exclusive feel within the shop. I have the time to properly consult with each and every client to make sure they receive an outstanding service and walk out feeling their absolute best. What have you found is the best way to market yourself or your salon to reach new clients? Social media in this day and age is so important for a business, it’s the first place people go when they are looking for something. Creating a strong presence digitally is your portfolio, it’s how you can show people what you do and who you are. But at the same time, I’m a firm believer that old school ways work too. Getting involved in your local community is still one of the best ways to build and market yourself. Word of mouth is massive. What’s next for Havachat? Do you have a plan for growing your business? Opening in quite a small suburb, I look forward to being able to become part of the community and, in doing so, creating organic growth. To be 100% honest, I definitely didn’t have a very thought-out business plan before opening. My mindset was to create a space that represents me as a person and allows all my clients to be a part of that. It was only once I started trading that I started to work behind the scenes on ideas for business growth.

QUICK-FIRE QUESTIONS: ALL THINGS BOWL CUT W/ DAVID WIESELMANN

24

AMERICAN CREW

CHANGING TIMES

Not typically associated with high fashion, the phrase ‘bowl cut’ usually conjures up visions of 90’s home haircuts or Dumb and Dumber flashbacks. However, like all things 90s and early 00s, the bowl cut is experiencing a serious comeback. And there’s a strong reason why - the bowl cut can suit all hair types and textures and a variety of face shapes. The bowl cut is no longer the rounded and simplistic style it once was, it’s changed and evolved with the shifting tides of fashion. The refreshed cuts of today, can be styled high-shine, dishevelled or even with a longer, shaggier edge. So, you might be asking by this point.. what exactly is a bowl cut, and how is it defined in the world of men’s hair? We shot some quick-fire questions to international award-winning hairdresser, David Wieselmann, from Wieselmann Salon in Melbourne to get the ins and outs of this resurrected trend. Where has this year’s big trend (the bowl cut!) come from? Everything we see in fashion starts on the street. Then, as hairstylists, we adapt it for the mainstream clientele and make it more wearable. We saw many trendy guys wear the bowl cut last year and, subsequently, it has influenced many shapes this season. What kind of hair best suit a bowl cut? This haircut can be adapted to all hair types, facial structures and textures. That’s what makes this cut so great and versatile. Though it does suit a ‘high fashion’ man. Are there any icons or celebrities rocking this look who we should look to for inspiration? The different Versace campaigns always embrace this trend. High fashion is where you can get some great inspiration for the bowl cut.

HOW CAN A BARBER BEST NAIL THE BOWL CUT?

What do stylists need to think about when creating this look? Take a good look at the client’s facial structure and hair quality. Then cut to suit the individual’s face shape and hair type. And if you decide to join the bowl cut cult, how can you keep it intact? Talk us through the steps and process in keeping your bowl cut wellmaintained? My advice would be to have a regular haircut every four to six weeks to keep your bowl cut looking on point. For styling, it’s the usual washing and drying situation, then apply products depending on what finish you want. I would recommend working with natural textures, the American Crew Fiber is my go-to when I style a bowl cut. I apply it after I shower, then let the hair just dry naturally. For some variety, you can use the Pomade to achieve more of a slicked back look. Any last words for a stylist who wants to attempt cutting a bowl cut?

2. P ut in the weight line

Remember that the bowl cut can be worn many ways and needs to be tailored to the person’s face shape. It’s also important to show your clients how to wear and style their bowl cut. For example, you can style the bowl cut off your face and slicked back with a side part. There is plenty of versatility in how to style the bowl cut and you can use different American Crew products to achieve different styles.

3. B lend from shortest length to weight line

It’s all about getting in there and playing around.

Nailing a good-looking bowl cut takes precision and experience, but here are the core steps to cutting a bowl cut: 1. P lace your scissors over the combed sides

4. Cut the top of the hair and the fringe to the desired length 5. D ry the hair and personalise Then, of course, apply styling products to get that sharp end pointed look.
