ANNUAL

REPORT

DEAR FRIENDS, Thank you to all who supported ADF during these uncertain times. It was with great sadness that we had to cancel ADF’s 2020 season. The COVID-19 crisis prevented ADF from congregating our incredible community of companies, choreographers, artistsin-residence, faculty, students, musicians, and audiences from across the country and around the world in celebration of our 87th year. While we were heartbroken to cancel the season, and while we miss live performance tremendously, ADF is empowered by all we have accomplished in such a short amount of time and under such challenging circumstances. We are encouraged by the incredible support of our donors, dedication of the ADF staff and Board of Directors, collaboration with our community, and perseverance of artists who continue to find new avenues to survive and thrive. During this most difficult period, ADF rapidly transformed to offer virtual programs that support artists, educators, and students and engage audiences. These virtual programs have accumulated over 65,000 views, and many continue to be available to stream at no cost. In addition to our virtual programs, ADF produced our first ever Creative Healing Parade in collaboration with community members. Prior to the shutdown, we were grateful to have been able to offer weekly classes, artist residencies, masterclasses, and more at the Samuel H. Scripps Studios. ADF also extended our reach beyond NC through the ADF School’s Winter Intensive, a New York City co-presentation, and travels abroad. We look forward to sharing all of this and more in our annual report. ADF is so grateful for your generosity, support, and belief in our work and mission. The day that we can safely gather and embrace the beauty and power of dance cannot come soon enough! We look forward to seeing you in the theater, in the studio, and on the dance floor when that day comes. Together we will get through these unprecedented times and always keep dancing! Best,

ARTIST ENGAGEMENTS VIRTUAL PRESENTATIONS

ADF launched a ticketed event series that presented works, lectures, films, and other experimental ways of presenting dance in our new normal. To kick off the series, ADF partnered with Dixon Place, Portland Ovations, Maine Arts Commission, and SPACE in Portland, ME, to present the virtual premiere of Sara Juli’s Burnt-Out Wife. ADF presented Reggie Wilson’s Unpacking INTRODUCTION: Cultural Appropriation, Kinesthetic Anthropology, and Post-African Neo Hoodoo Modern Dance, an interactive lecture that used Wilson’s solo performance of INTRODUCTION (1996) to discuss borrowing, stealing, cultural appropriation, copyright, intellectual property, and innovation. ADF closed our year with Keep Moving by Monica Bill Barnes and Company, which collaborated with sixteen dancers from New York City’s Hunter College to compose an original online collection of video and audio experiences based on the company’s work The Running Show, created for the world we are all living in now. Sara Juli Burnt-Out Wife by Sara Juli was commissioned by ADF with support from the Doris Duke/SHS Foundations Award for New Works. The presentation of Burnt-Out Wife was made possible by the New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and The Andrew W. ADF CELEBRATES BLACK ARTISTRY

Since the 1980s, ADF has produced several humanities and media projects that focus on the crucial role Black choreographers and dancers have played in the development of modern dance as an American artform. In collaboration with the artists featured, ADF Celebrates Black Artistry released historic and contemporary works by Black artists presented by ADF. ADF also shared the three-part documentary and Emmy award-winning PBS television series Free to Dance: The African American Presence in Modern Dance. ARTIST ENGAGEMENTS CREATIVE HEALING PARADE

Seeking opportunities for our community to come together, ADF established an advisory committee composed of Durham-based artists and administrators. The committee produced a Creative Healing Parade as its first event. For one hour on a Saturday evening in October, 70 local socially distanced artists performed across 25 driveways and lawns in the Trinity Ridge neighborhood of Durham. 200 cars drove through and over 500 viewers attended. It was a cathartic experience for the artists and attendees. For many, it was the first time performing or seeing live performance in seven months. It galvanized a neighborhood and generous donors to come to gather to support live arts, and it was thrilling for attendees to witness so much local talent within a quarter-mile radius. All of the professional artists were paid an honorarium. Creative Healing Parade artists: Welcome Community BANTABA: Venita Allen, Britany Burch, Ivy Burch, Toni Hall, Sakarah Hall-Edge, Kenzie Presswood, Bashir Shakur Renay Aumiller Dances: Sarah DeSordi, Olivia Haskell, Jenna Kulacz, Olivia Walton Big Red Dance Project: Glenna Batson, Rebecca Bliss, Andrea Didisheim, Sue Hill The Bipeds: Stacy Wolfson and Curtis Eller Black Box Dance Theatre: Aflredo Hurtado, Adelle Johnson, Laura Montgomery, Karen Warr Culture Mill: Paul Molina, Cathy Moore, Carol Vollmer, Michael Rank Gaspard&Dancers: Oakley Gaddy, Sullivan Gaddy, Shana Gordon, Dahlia Louis, Louise Luboyera, Sumi Scoville JOYEMOVEMENT: Dylan Reddish, Milanda McGinnis, Samantha McKinney, Jordan Shadley killianmanning/noforwardingaddress: George Barrett, Christina Conley, Mary Chandler Gwinn KT COLLECTIVE: Kristin Taylor Duncan, Jackie Bennett, Darian Moore Laci McDonald and Durham Academy Dancers: Megan Corey, Lee Jeffries, Rachel Urato, Katherine Lantzy, Laci McDonald, Rebecca Urato ShaLeigh Dance Works: Jam Niel Delgado Castro, Isabelle Frame, Hannah Nicole Marr, Steven J. EDUCATIONAL & PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMS The ADF School chooses a critical lens that allows faculty and students to consider dance in relation to contemporary culture and timely issues. In 2020, the School focused on the physical imagination, asking, “How does dance allow you to explore and realize your wildest imaginings?” The 2020 Winter Intensive in NYC explored this question in early January, offering a variety of perspectives on the imaginative capacity of our dancing bodies. The Summer Dance Intensive, Pre-Professional Dance Intensive, and Dance Professional Workshops were all reimagined for online instruction. Each program was shortened and limited capacity to make for intimate training programs.

SUMMER DANCE INTENSIVE

The Summer Dance Intensive (SDI) program offered three weeks of online courses for students ages 18 and older. Courses envisioned new ways to respond to current times by reimagining how we move between making, dancing, researching, and performing in a virtual context. Courses included contemporary movement practices, creative practice, and a unique online repertory project, and were led by Leah Cox, Nia Love, Jenna Riegel, Ray Schwartz, and André Zachery. Drop-in classes were taught by Gerri Houlihan and Nia Love, and Open Forum discussions were facilitated by Leah Cox with Nia Love and André Zachery. The 2020 Online Summer Dance Intensive served a total of 96 students.

PRE-PROFESSIONAL DANCE INTENSIVE

The Pre-Professional Dance Intensive (PDI) program offered two weeks of online courses for students ages 13-17. This program provided rigorous training within a supportive community for intermediate and advanced dancers. Normally an audition-based program, the online format enabled students to enroll based on their own self assessment of their training and experience. The online program offered two courses in technique and composition that focused on building strength, stamina, and creativity, while also offering inspiring faculty and a community of passionate dancers from all over the world. Technique classes in different forms were led by Michelle Gibson and Matt Pardo, and composition classes were led by Momar Ndiaye. The online platform offered the unique opportunity for our students to continue their movement practice as a group, while also engaging in personal reflection and exploration of how they can reimagine and create within their own space. The 2020 Online Pre-Professional Dance Intensive served a total of 31 students.

DANCE PROFESSIONAL WORKSHOPS

The Dance Professional Workshops (DPW) offered two, week-long online workshops for dance educators and makers. The online workshops provided these professionals with the opportunity for experimental collaboration, rejuvenation, and the space to connect as a community. Workshops offered included DPW for Makers with Jesse Zaritt and DPW for Educators with Gerri Houlihan. Each workshop held daily classes and included time to move, discuss, and form community. The 2020 Online Dance Professional Workshops served a total of 53 participants.

WINTER INTENSIVE

Celebrating its 25th year, the 8-day ADF Winter Intensive in New York City was attended by 68 students. In addition to taking classes with distinguished faculty in contemporary movement forms, creative practices, and repertory,

7

students attended performances by Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Urban Bush Women, and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. New this year, students had the ability to choose which repertory experience they wanted to enroll in, selecting two of four companies/choreographers: Kyle Marshall, Urban Bush Women, Netta Yerushalmy, and Jesse Zaritt. A dedicated group reflection and discussion at the beginning and end of each day explored the critical lens of the physical imagination and enabled students to form community and lasting professional relationships.

ADF BEYOND NC NYC PRESENTATION

ADF co-presented the New York premiere of Sara Juli’s Burnt-Out Wife with Dixon Place in February 2020.

ADF/BARD COLLEGE PARTNERSHIP

Beginning in fall 2018 and ending in spring 2020, the Bard College Dance Program and the American Dance Festival formed a two-year partnership designed to challenge the way dance is taught in higher education. Uniting critical inquiry and professional practice through strategically designed coursework and campus-wide activities, the program brought ADF faculty to Bard to teach courses and provided a creative residency at Bard for an ADF-selected artist. In fall 2019, ADF faculty member Nia Love taught one composition course and co-taught one course in contemporary technique with Bard faculty Souleymane Badolo. In spring 2020, EmmaGrace Skove-Epes taught two courses: one in intermediate modern technique and another in improvisation, and Ivy Baldwin led a repertory course that was intended to culminate in a performance in the Faculty Dance Concert. Due to COVID-19, Bard moved all courses online, and the performance of Baldwin’s work was postponed for the academic year 20202021. Ni’Ja Whitson was the ADF resident artist, slated to be in residence at Bard in mid-spring 2020.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT ADF strives to provide arts education for all by offering year-round community engagement opportunities. ADF encourages everyone – individuals of all movement experiences – to take part in modern dance. Programs at ADF’s SHS Studios are dedicated to providing a sound scientific and aesthetic base for all levels of training. ADF’s SHS Studios serve as a center for creative activity in which students learn in a welcoming and non-competitive environment from faculty who are experts in their fields.

ADF’S SAMUEL H. SCRIPPS STUDIOS

More than 671 participants of all ages attended youth and adult classes at ADF’s Samuel H. Scripps Studios during 2019-2020 prior to shutting our doors due to COVID-19 in March. In August, the SHS Studios pivoted to presenting several classes online.

YOUTH CLASSES AND SCHOLARSHIPS

Through generous foundation and individual support, ADF was able to offer 70 scholarships to Durham and Triangle youth to attend weekly classes at the studios between September and March. Scholarships to ADF’s Youth Classes were offered in the names of Anonymous and Susan and Michael Hershfield.

WORKSHOPS AND MASTERCLASSES

In addition to weekly classes for youth and adults, ADF’s SHS Studios offered a mix of masterclasses, workshops, and open discussions with local and national choreographers, companies, and faculty including Glenna Batson, Culture Mill, Amanda K. Miller, Kira Blazek-Ziaii, Leah Wilks, Matt Pardo, and Ronald K. Brown. As part of a weekend of events with Ronald K. Brown, a number of opportunities were free and open to the public, including a screening and facilitated conversation centering around the 20 th anniversary of Brown’s breakout work Grace, and a community dinner at the Scripps Studios. ADF also collaborated with Duke Performances to offer master classes with Alonzo King LINES Ballet and Ballet X.

ADF’S PARKINSON’S PROGRAM

The Parkinson’s Movement Initiative (PMI) program, offered in collaboration with Poe Wellness Solutions and NC Dance for Parkinson’s, completed its third successful year. PMI is supported by a Community Grant from the Parkinson’s Foundation, which enables ADF to offer all PMI classes cost-free for people living with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and their caregivers. In addition to weekly classes, the 2019-2020 PMI offered special volunteer meet-ups to cultivate our growing community of committed PMI volunteers, as well as continuing our Community Connections initiative that works to form a lasting network of meaningful relationships in the community. Due to COVID-19, our PMI classes were forced to cease in-person operations on March 14. Faced with this obstacle, our PMI faculty created a catalogue of new instructional videos on YouTube, with new videos being released each week. The PMI team built a YouTube channel of over 30 videos that the PD community can use as a resource while continuing their movement practice at home. This transition in the face of unprecedented circumstances was met with over 1,800 views, an average of 49 views per video. Live online classes via Zoom were also initiated in September, with 171 visits by 45 unique attendees in the first three weeks of class. Expanding upon our work with the PD community, the They Are All/Dancing with Parkinson’s project bridges artistic and scientific perspectives to seed new ground for research on the beneficial outcomes of improvisational movement, mindfulness, and somatic tools for people living with PD. ADF worked with Culture Mill’s Tommy Noonan

9

and Murielle Elizéon to teach Dancing with Parkinson’s classes while Dr. Jeff Hoder, Associate Professor of Physical Therapy of Duke University, observed on participant progress. Classes intersected professional dancers, researchers, and individuals living with PD. Participants reported a significant positive change in quality of life from engaging with this project. The project also raised awareness of the collaboration’s innovative cross-sector approach and expanded the potential for further development and collaborations. The 2019-2020 They Are All/Dancing with Parkinson’s project culminated with a livestreamed work-in-progress debut of the project’s documentary titled Here and Dancing by Dr. Elisabeth Barbier that reached 189 viewers, as well as the launch of the project’s site movingthrough.live. American Dance Festival is proud to offer Parkinson’s Movement Initiative classes in partnership with NC Dance for Parkinson’s and Poe Wellness Solutions and supported by a community grant from the Parkinson’s Foundation. Through this support, all classes offered through the Parkinson’s Movement Initiative are free for people living with PD and their caregivers. Additional support is provided by RTI International and the Lyna J. Rogers Fund of Triangle Community Foundation in memory of Betty Y. Powell. The They Are All/Dancing with Parkinson’s Project is funded in part by ADF with a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the North Carolina Arts Council. Culture Mill’s work is made possible in part with a grant from the Kenan Charitable Trust. Additional support is provided by RTI International.

ADF’S STUDIO SUBSIDY PROGRAM

ADF’s Studio Subsidy Program continued for its second year with generous support from the Robert and Mercedes Eichholz Foundation. The program provides access to rehearsal space at affordable rates for local dance artists contributing to Durham’s creative landscape. In 2019-2020, ADF awarded a total of 225 hours of subsidized studio time to 10 independent artists in the area, enabling the creation of new work, exploration of ideas, and space for regular studio practice. ADF’s Studio Subsidy Program was made possible through a generous gift from the Robert and Mercedes Eichholz Foundation.

ADF PROJECT DANCE

Developed in 1998 in collaboration with the Durham Parks and Recreation Department, ADF Project Dance is a special program designed to share dance with the Triangle community. Those involved participate in a wide range of activities, providing many opportunities to learn and experience dance. Over the years, ADF Project Dance has worked with community partners such as Durham Public Schools, senior centers, Duke Hospital, libraries and community centers, and the Durham Parks and Recreation Department. ADF Project Dance provides creative movement classes with professional teaching artists and guest performers. From October 2019 through March 2020, ADF offered over 96 classes to more than 1,932 participants at 4 locations in the Triangle area. ADF Project Dance was made possible with major support from the SHS Foundation. Additional support was provided by Central Park School for Children and Susan and Michael Hershfield.

INTERNATIONAL REACH Jodee Nimerichter and three arts presenters and educators traveled to China to foster relationships with several companies and academies. Yang Meiqi and co-organizers Ou Jian-Ping and Frank Fu led the nongovernmental tour of contemporary dance in China that provided an insider’s look on classes and rehearsals in Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Beijing. US colleagues included James Frazier (former ADF Co-Dean and current Dean of the College of Fine Arts at Florida State University), Aaron Mattocks (Director of Programming at The Joyce Theater), and Stanford Makishi (Vice President for Programming at City Center). This trip provided opportunities for artistic exchange, educational programming, and creative residencies. Chinese companies and choreographers will be considered for future ADF choreographic residency programs and presentations. The trip also laid the groundwork for ADF teaching and creative residencies in China. ADF’s trip to China was made possible in part with a grant from the Asian Cultural Council to advance international understanding through cultural exchange in the arts.

ADF’S MOVIES BY MOVERS Under the direction of Cara Hagan, ADF’s Movies by Movers is an annual film festival dedicated to the conversation between the body and the camera. The 2020 festival was co-curated by Hagan, Juel D. Lane, and Jennifer Scully-Thurston. Pivoting this program online not only expanded our audience, generating an average of 107 views per film, but also increased our capacity to share 85 dance films over the course of six weeks, nearly doubling the featured films from the year prior.

ARCHIVES In 2020, the ADF Archives provided video footage for a number of online initiatives created by the American Dance Festival and by choreographers and companies who have appeared at the festival. A highlight was a special limited presentation of classic works by Paul Taylor, Merce Cunningham, and Martha Graham performed by ADF students in the 2019 Footprints program. Other new initiatives included ADF’s series Gathering for Dance and ADF Celebrates Black Artistry.
