We featured 40 performances by 25 companies and choreographers, including 8 festival debuts, and more than 90 North Carolina artists and community members graced our various stages. We welcomed students and choreographers from 34 states and 12 countries, and our Samuel H. Scripps Studios offered camps, year-round classes for all ages and levels, informal showings, and artist residencies throughout the year. The magic of ADF is made possible with a vibrant community coming together. YOU showed us your enthusiasm for all that we do, and you supported us through attending performances, generous contributions, hosting parties and artists in your homes, partnering, volunteering, and so much more. RENNIE HARRIS 2023 Samuel H. Scripps/American Dance Festival Award Rennie Harris with daughter, Miyeko Urvashi Rennie Harris, and godson, Carter Hill

ADF presented the 2023 Samuel H. Scripps/American Dance Festival Award for lifetime achievement to acclaimed Hip-hop choreographer, ambassador, educator, and artist Rennie Harris. Robert Battle, Artistic Director of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, presented the $50,000 award to Harris on June 9. Following the award presentation, Harris’ company, Rennie Harris Puremovement American Street Dance Theater, performed Nuttin’ But A Word.

Rennie Harris introduced Street Dance to concert stages, coined the term “Street Dance Theater,” and pioneered the dance style globally as a powerful teacher/spokesperson for the significance of “street” origins in any dance style. Recognized as a leading ambassador for Hip-hop dance art, Harris’ work encompasses African American traditions of the past while presenting new generational voices through its ever-evolving interpretations of dance.

JODY GOTTFRIED ARNHOLD 2023 Balasaraswati/Joy Anne Dewey Beinecke Endowed Chair for Distinguished Teaching

Ann Biddle and Erin Lally presented the award to Jody Gottfried Arnold at a ceremony on June 28. The ceremony was followed by the screening of PS Dance! The Next Generation which was produced by Arnhold. Arnhold’s experience teaching dance in New York City public schools for 25 years has been the catalyst for her visionary support of dance education in public schools. Her contributions to dance in higher education have created unparalleled opportunities for dance to be taught, researched, measured, and analyzed, providing substantial evidence that dance is essential to every child’s education. She founded Dance Education Laboratory (DEL) 92NY in 1995. Her support for arts programming at the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) has created a robust and thriving community of dance educators. The Arnhold Graduate Dance Education Program at Hunter College, which Arnhold created as a pipeline to train and certify dance educators, has contributed to the more than 500 certified dance educators currently teaching dance in NYC public schools. GERRI HOULIHAN 2023 Season Honoree

ADF dedicated its 2023 season to educator, choreographer, and performer Gerri Houlihan, who celebrated her 40th anniversary of teaching at the festival this summer. The season dedication took place on June 25 during the Faculty & Musicians Concert, where Houlihan presented her work, Written on the Body. This year, ADF established the Gerri Houlihan Scholarship Fund.

TONY C. JOHNSON

ADF celebrated the life and work of Tony C. Johnson on June 19 with the premieres of a short documentary by David Delaney Mayer and a new work by Johnson followed by a moderated conversation. Johnson is a life-long artist, dancer, choreographer, and, most of all, a community builder and loyal supporter of ADF. This year, ADF awarded the first Tony C. Johnson scholarship.

Our 2023 summer educational and professional programs focused on bringing people together and creating connections through classes, discussions, process, and performances. From dancers in the Summer Dance Intensive and Pre-Professional Dance Intensive to working artists in the Dance Professional Workshops, we collectively danced, explored, and expanded.

SUMMER DANCE INTENSIVE The 2023 Summer Dance Intensive (SDI), a four-week intensive for dancers and artists ages 18 and older, offered 18 energizing daily classes, 60+ drop-in classes and discussions, student shows, and performances to 156 enrolled students. Daily classes included African dance forms, ballet, composition, contemporary, Hip-hop & House, improvisation, jazz, process, and repertory, led by 15 faculty and 12 musicians. Additionally, ADF faculty, company artists, and guests led drop-in classes, which provided vast opportunities for dancers to engage and train deeply. Classes were led by ADF Faculty Anna Barker, Brian Brooks, Robbie Cook, Tatiana Desardouin, Adriane Fang, Ramón Flowers, Monique Haley, Kelly Hirina, Yangkeun Kim, Jordan Lloyd, Brenna Monroe-Cook, Sherone Price, Jenna Riegel, Abdel R. Salaam, Charles Slender-White, and Jessie Young. Performance opportunities for students included repertory classes, student works, the International Choreographers Residency (ICR), and the Footprints program with Brian Brooks, Tatiana Desardouin, and Abdel R. Salaam.

PRE-PROFESSIONAL DANCE INTENSIVE The Pre-Professional Dance Intensive (PDI), an audition-based two-week intensive for young artists ages 13–17, provided challenging dance classes focused on community building while cultivating individual growth and the artistic voice. Daily classes included African dance forms, ballet, composition, dance film, jazz, modern, and repertory. These classes were designed to develop artistry, offer new approaches to training, and instill confidence. This year, dancers harnessed their own ingenuity and created individual dance films and a collaborative group dance. Additional program opportunities included master classes, reflective discussions, student-led activities, social events, a variety/talent show, and the ADF season performances. These dancers were mentored by a group of experienced dorm counselors that created a welcoming and supportive environment. Classes were led by ADF Faculty Anna Barker, Michelle Gibson, Jordan Kriston, Momar Ndiaye, and Matt Pardo and featured live musical accompaniment by Vladimir Espinosa, Natalie Gilbert, and Andrew Hasenpflug (Director of Musicians). Dancers collaboratively created alongside their faculty in their repertory classes and performed new works for the ADF community. The 2023 Pre-Professional Dance Intensive had 47 enrolled students.

This year, ADF made a historic investment in its school staffing and hired its first onsite, full-time Director of Education, Nile H. Russell. Russell develops and oversees recruitment efforts and school programming and is a liaison with our incredible community of students, faculty, and musicians.

DANCE PROFESSIONAL WORKSHOPS In 2023, the Dance Professional Workshops (DPW) for working artists and educators offered DPW for Creative Process with Liz Lerman and Leah Cox, and DPW for Educators with Gerri Houlihan. These week-long workshops provided the opportunity for new collaboration, artistic renewal, and making connections. DPW for Creative Process fostered imagination and the development of creative tools for use in a variety of scenarios and offered practices for continued growth, curiosity, and change. Participants were encouraged to adapt and apply Lerman and Cox’s creative tools in ways that support their own artistic practices. DPW for Educators replenished pedagogical capacities through a curriculum that offered space for educators to examine teaching methods while moving. Participants engaged in daily movement classes with Houlihan, in-depth sessions with guest faculty, and participant-led discussions.

ADF/DUKE MFA COLLABORATION The Duke Dance Program MFA in Dance: Embodied Interdisciplinary Praxis (MFAEIP)’s graduate and alumni dance artists participated in movement classes and workshops at ADF, and we continue to explore new ways of enriching this wonderful connection.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT ADF’S SAMUEL H. SCRIPPS STUDIOS ADF’s Samuel H. Scripps Studios offered in-person classes, camps, and master classes for all ages and levels. ADF was able to offer scholarships to 65 students thanks to an anonymous donor. ADF’s Scripps Studios provided space to numerous artists for rehearsals, residencies, and informal showings. The ADF Studio Subsidy Program offered discounted rentals to 9 North Carolina dance artists thanks to generous support from the Robert and Mercedes Eichholz Foundation.

During ADF’s performance season, Tatiana Desardouin, founder and artistic director of Passion Fruit Dance Company, offered a Hip-hop camp to engage youth ages 12-15. Pilobolus’ Shadow Camp returned this year and participants showed off what they learned on stage, in front of a full house, at the start of the Pilobolus show on June 23. BODYTRAFFIC, Heather Favretto, Gerri Houlihan, Jessie Young, Sherone Price, and Jordan Kriston offered free community workshops in celebration of ADF’s Scripps Studios’ 10 year anniversary. Through a collaboration with community leaders and a generous donation, ADF was able to offer scholarships to 13 Latino youth to attend Ballet Hispánico’s bilingual camp, Baila Conmigo, Come Dance with Me! After the conclusion of the camp, students and their families were invited to attend Ballet Hispánico’s performance, where a short video, capturing the students’ experiences and the camp’s impact, was screened.

ADF PROJECT DANCE

PARKINSON’S PROGRAMS

Developed in 1998 in collaboration with the Durham Parks and Recreation Department, ADF Project Dance is designed to expose the Triangle community to dance by offering free creative movement classes led by professional teaching artists and guest performers. The program is led by Creative Movement Director Gaspard Louis.

The Parkinson’s Movement Initiative (PMI), offered in collaboration with Poe Wellness Solutions and NC Dance for Parkinson’s, had another successful year with cost-free movement classes for people living with PD and their caregivers. These weekly classes were offered in person and via Zoom.

In 2022-2023, ADF offered classes to more than 1,018 participants in the Triangle. In the spring semester, Louis led classes at Durham’s Central Park School for Children, Holt Elementary, Durham Nativity School, Southeast High School, East Wake High School, Knightdale High School, and Hillside High School. Artists Jose Velasquez, Daisy Hodge, Taylor Lovett, Annabel Lopez, and McDaniel Roberts hosted programs at Marbles Kids Museum (Raleigh) and Kidzu Children’s Museum (Chapel Hill) during the summer. McDaniel Roberts also offered workshops with Durham Parks and Recreation at Edison Johnson, Walltown, and WD Hill Recreation Centers.

ADF’s Parkinson’s Movement Initiative is currently in partnership with the NC Dance for Parkinson’s and is supported by the William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust, Parkinson’s Foundation, RTI International, and individual donors.

ADF Project Dance is made possible with major support from the SHS Foundation. Additional support is provided by the Scripps Family Fund for Education and the Arts, Susan and Michael Hershfield, and Central Park School for Children.

INTERNATIONAL CHOREOGRAPHERS RESIDENCY PROGRAM In 2023, we were thrilled to bring back the International Choreographers Residency program (ICR) for the first time since 2019. Under the direction of Gerri Houlihan and Momar Ndiaye, this year’s cohort included nine choreographers from Australia, China, Croatia, Korea, Romania, Spain, Taiwan, and Ukraine. The ICR program creates lifelong friendships and collaboration among choreographers and dancers worldwide.

MOVIES BY MOVERS Under the direction of Jennifer Scully-Thurston, ADF’s Movies By Movers is an annual film festival dedicated to the conversation between the body and the camera. An exciting new collaboration between ADF and the Chelsea Theater made possible the Chelsea x ADF Dance Film Series, which presented a series of classic musicals, feature films, documentaries, shorts, and the premiere of an ADF-commissioned film by Micaela Taylor on the big screen at the Chelsea Theater in Chapel Hill, NC. Over the summer, films were presented at the Film Theater in the Rubenstein Arts Center at Duke University and streamed online. A selection of films from the 2022 Movies By Movers program was presented at the Alabama Screendance Festival in January 2023. Chelsea x ADF Dance Film Series was supported by the Robert and Mercedes Eichholz Foundation.

Dreaming Trans and Queer Futures Emmy-Award winning film by Lindsay Gauthier and Sean Dorsey Dance

Clare Schweitzer and Hannah M. Weber, hosts of the podcast Frameform, attended the July 15th screening, leading a Q&A with 8 filmmakers and recording a special interview with Sean Dorsey Dance for Frameform, which discusses movies, moving, and everything in between. ADF’s Movies By Movers presented short dance films from all over the world, including Australia, Canada, China, France, Italy, Mexico, Norway, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

MEMORY FOR MOVEMENT Dr. Ruth Day, Duke Professor and ADF’s Cognitive Scientist in Residence, continued ADF’s Dancers & Audience Memory Program throughout the 2023 season. This teaching and research program is based on both dance and cognitive science principles. It uses an online Dance Perception Quiz, structured class observations, lab experiments, and other methods to answer questions such as, “How do dancers learn and remember?” and “How do audiences perceive and remember?” A major focus this year was on dancers’ excellent memory – is it excellent in general or just for dance?

TICKET PROGRAMS EXPERIENCE DANCE

In an effort to make the performing arts accessible to as many groups as possible, ADF distributes complimentary performance tickets to nonprofit organizations that work with individuals, families, youth, and seniors in need who otherwise could not attend performances. ADF staff reviews applications from local nonprofit organizations and determines how Experience Dance tickets will be distributed. During the 2023 performance season, approximately 250 Experience Dance tickets were given out to 6 local community groups. Experience Dance is made possible with support from the Duke Energy Foundation.

KIDS NIGHT OUT

ADF’s Kids Night Out program provided 205 youth ages 6-17 the opportunity to attend season performances for free with the purchase of a regular-priced adult ticket. Kids Night Out is made possible with support from the Durham Merchants Association Charitable Foundation.

ADF GO

ADF Go is designed to make modern dance more accessible to young adults ages 18–30 by offering $15 tickets to most ADF performances. In 2023, tickets were made available in advance, increasing sales by 199% (418 ADF Go tickets sold) from 2022 when tickets were only sold on the day of the show.

GOLDEN TICKET FOR EDUCATORS

In 2022, ADF launched the Golden Ticket for Dance Educators program, which in 2023 was extended to educators in all disciplines. 70 educators took advantage of the 6-show subscription for $90 or 20% off single ticket offers. Golden Tickets for Educators are made possible with support from the Robert and Mercedes Eichholz Foundation.

CAREGIVER DISCOUNT

Eight elderly patrons or patrons with disabilities and their personal caregivers benefited from ADF’s new Caregiver Discount, which provides one free ticket with the purchase of another ticket.

CHILDREN’S SATURDAY MATINEE SERIES

The 2023 Children’s Matinee season’s three one-hour performances by Rennie Harris Puremovement, Pilobolus, and Ballet Hispànico welcomed 2,053 youth and families. The shows were curated to evoke curiosity and inspire children’s imaginations, followed by a FREE Kids’ Party with live music, snacks, and kid-friendly activities. $12 Children’s Matinee tickets are made possible with support from Jody and John Arnhold/Arnhold Foundation.
