Little Lake Dalton and Dalton Pump and Pipeline
Little Lake Dalton was constructed by Paul Morgan Excavating Inc. of La Veta in 2005. According to design drawings prepared by Gamba & Associates of Glenwood Springs it has a surface area of approximage 3.43 acres and storage capacity of approximately 27.3 acre feet. A liner was installed to prevent both seepage from the reservoir and infiltration of groundwater into the reservoir. After construction, fish habitat improvements were designed and installed by J. Peter Gallagher of FIN-UP Habitation Consultants, Inc. The reservoir was designed to be a recreational and aesthetic feature, filled with water diverted from the Cucharas River through a pipeline known as the “Dalton Pump and Pipeline.” Fresh water from the river circulates through the reservoir and exits the reservoir to the Cucharas River through a separate pipeline. The only water loss occurs through evaporation from the surface. First filled in 2006, this lake has operated continuously since then by diverting water from the river, recirculating it through the reservoir, and returning it back to the river at a point approximately 900 feet downstream.
