LEARNING LIFE SKILLS AND BUILDING CONFIDENCE

The goal of every AHG Troop is to provide girls with a balanced program, which progresses with the girl - increasing in challenge and skill as she grows in maturity and knowledge. Building on skills they’ve learned during their years in previous Program Levels, girls can earn badges multiple times by working on them again at various ages. This balanced programming model provides an opportunity for a deeper understanding of valuable life skills. The AHG Program offers girls 93 different badge options in six Frontiers of skill—Heritage, Family Living, Arts, Outdoor Skills, Personal WellBeing, and Science & Technology.

ARCHERY BADGE

The bow and arrow have played an important part in human history. In ancient times, archery proved an efficient method for hunting. Today the sports of target archery and bow hunting are practiced and enjoyed around the world. The following badge requirements will introduce you to the rules, terms, and skills of target archery.

AHG Troops do a phenomenal job connecting with their local communities through service opportunities, fundraising, new member recruitment, and yes, even badge work! When it comes to learning life skills through AHG Badges, there is tremendous value in connecting girls with area professionals to learn from the best. The girls of AR1024 culminated their Archery Badge work with a private class at a local Archery Shooting Range in Springdale, AR. They were able to complete the over two-hour class completely free of charge, but the skills and memories the girls gained are invaluable! From the safety guidelines and physical skills for archery to different types of bows and local archery laws, these girls came away with a new wealth of knowledge of the sport and confidence in themselves.

CARING FOR CREATION BADGE

God has created a beautiful world for us to enjoy! We must learn to be good stewards of His gift of nature for the benefit of our safety, our enjoyment, and for future generations. The warmer months inspire AHG Troops to explore and enjoy God’s glorious creation! OH3722 took advantage of the opportunity to teach their Tenderhearts and Pathfinders about diligently caring for our planet through a recycling presentation from Mr. Randall, a community member in the recycling industry. Mr. Randall taught girls the valuable (and catchy!) practice of “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” According to Tenderheart Unit Level Leader Jenny Jackson, they learned “that we can recycle more than we realize, especially metals.” The lesson artfully weaved together the realities that God’s provision for us is abundant and it is our collective responsibility to take care of the world He’s given us. As a lasting gift reminder, each girl received a recycling t-shirt in addition to the Caring for Creation Badge to wear proudly on her vest!

WORLD HERITAGE BADGE

The United States is known as the world’s melting pot. People from many different countries and cultures call America their home. In order to truly understand America’s roots, we must learn to appreciate the customs and traditions of various cultures. When an AHG Troop takes on badge work within a Program Level, wonderfully deep learnings and passions can blossom. In PA3031’s case, the World Heritage Badge culminated in a mother-daughter tea event entitled “Trip Around the World”! The girls of the Explorer Unit learned about various countries including China, France, and Kenya, among others. Naudia, an Explorer, researched Italy as a way to honor her best friend who is originally from Sicily. Naudia’s mother, a caterer, helped her plan the menu including homemade tomato sauce, bruschetta, prosciutto-wrapped mozzarella, and strawberry Italian sodas. Naudia said her favorite part of the badge work was “learning about the different types of food. I get very inspired seeing my mom cook all kinds of delicious food and was really excited that I got to help her and learn how to make dishes from Italy at the same time.” The icing on the cake for this event was that Tenderhearts who attended also earned their World Heritage Badge by completing their requirements!
