“My Burnout Story”
How Practicing AMI’s Physicians Conference Curriculum Transformed My Burnout Crisis into a Renewed Love of Medicine and Greater Creativity
By Anthony Santilli, MDFrom my own personal experience, I’ve come to realize that what distinguishes the AMI Physicians CME Conference from other conferences is that it teaches people how to rely on themselves, rather than just giving them information to pass along to other people. It explains to attendees how to do what they already know how to do but to do it in a confident and secure fashion. And I believe wholeheartedly that it’s desperately needed in medicine and society in general.
I’ve attended most conferences to gain knowledge in hopes of being able to help my patients. But from attending this conference, I’ve gained knowledge to help myself, which in turn, has helped my patients dramatically. The benefit this curriculum has provided me has felt more like a personal and professional therapy for all of life, rather than just trying to acquire the latest medical information.
Each year, when I leave the AMI conference, I feel empowered, and the feeling of being empowered is critically important in the practice of my entire life.
Ten years ago, I was ready to leave medicine, and it was the tools I learned at this conference that enabled me to again think and truly believe that it’s the best job in the world!
This conference curriculum is definitely important for every health care provider, and for the future of health care in general. All medical professionals are now working under enormous pressures that we’ve never been adequately trained to deal with.
But what I’ve learned each year at the
AMI physicians conference has helped me to deal with things that, at times, were very scary. Life in the 21st century can be very challenging, and we just don’t receive a lot of education in life on how to navigate it. We’re not taught how to deal with all the complex interactions that occur. In contrast, every lecture presented at this conference teaches the practical tools we all need. And when skillfully employed, these tools really work as is evidenced by the latest peer-reviewed clinical study that proved this curriculum reduced Burnout 23.3%, reduced Secondary Traumatic Stress 19.9% and increased Compassion Satisfaction 11.2%.
For all these reasons, I highly recommend that every physician, PA, NP and medical executive attend this year’s 12th annual “Heart and Science of Yoga” conference. For me, it’s been a “life saver.” And during the upcoming conference I’ll be presenting the complete version of “My Burnout Story,” including several “before and after” pictures that illustrate (better than my words can) what burnout can do to our lives.
I look forward to meeting you in October!

same compassion to yourself as you would to those you care for. And look in the mirror and ask yourself: ‘Are you happy?’ ‘Are you thriving?’ And if not, why is that? The AMI Conference Curriculum is news to use! It is the antidote to so many of those day-to-day challenges.”

Medscape Physician Burnout & Depression Report
According to the Medscape Physician Burnout & Depression Report 2023, the overall rate of persistent physician burnout and depression increased to 53% this past year up from 47% in 2021 and nearly 80% of the physicians described their burnout level as moderate to severe. In this year’s survey, over 9,100 physicians (across more than the 29 specialties shown below) told poignant stories about how burnout and depression harm personal and patient relationships, and that their levels of frustration, sadness, and anger are widespread.
Which Physicians Are Most Burned Out
Today, the 53% of physicians personally dealing with burnout and depression represents a significant increase from the Medscape Report five years ago (before COVID-19 crashed onto the scene). Also, 23% of physicians now report depression compared with only 15% of respondents five years ago.
The specialties most effected have shifted somewhat. Five years ago, 47% of Family Medicine physicians said they were burned out. Today it is 57%. Emergency Medicine (now at 65%), was less impacted in 2018 (at 45%).
Although burnout consistently afflicts a greater percentage of female physicians than male physicians, the numbers have risen notably since 2018, when 38% of men and 48% of women reported burnout. This year the burnout figures found 46% of male doctors and 63% of female doctors were afflicted with burnout.
Speaking directly to the challenges facing today’s healthcare professionals, curriculum developer and faculty director Leonard Perlmutter says, “You became a doctor because you care about people. You work hard and truly want to serve your patients and profession in addition to experiencing a rewarding home life. But as a physician you are subject to many stressors: overwork, cumbersome regulations, EMR and coding requirements, medical liability, on-call issues, lack of sleep, hospital politics, and frustrations with the reimbursement structure. But regardless of how challenging your circumstances might feel today, the 12th annual Heart and Science of Yoga® CME Conference will provide you a set of practical tools that can enable you to improve your job satisfaction and work-life balance, while reducing burnout and feelings of anger, depression, stress and exhaustion.”

SACRED JOURNEY Living Purposefully and Dying Gracefully
Leonard (Ram Lev) and Jenness Perlmutter
Receive Answers to These Inescapable Questions: Why am I here? What happens in death? How should I live now?
Level II: To understand the purpose of life, we must try to understand the relationship between life and death. The two are partners––each providing a context for the other. Death is not the end, but merely a pause in an eternal journey. When both birth and death are understood and accepted, we see how our human life fits into the eternal journey of the soul, the fear of death subsides and life can be lived more skillfully and joyfully. Based on the ancient Katha Upanishad, this course reveals how to organize your life in practical, commonsensical ways that lead to expansion and growth. Every AMI student with a mind and body is encouraged to attend!
