Don’t Be Fueled By E15 damage to your ATV. Using E15 in your ATV also may void the manufacturer’s warranty. Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Agriculture also has unveiled a $100 million plan to double the number of higher-blend fuel pumps. Mandating the increased production and sale of higherethanol blends and subsidizing more blender pumps significantly increases the likelihood that ATV riders will inadvertently pump unsafe E15 fuel into their machines. Because of the EPA proposals, E15 may appear at a fueling station near you soon. Be careful that you don’t accidently put it in your ATV because E15 combustion produces hotter exhaust gasses than gasoline that contains a lesser amount of ethanol. In ATVs not designed to dissipate that extra heat, damage in the form of premature engine wear can result. Also, higher levels of ethanol can degrade fuel system O-rings and seals and attract moisture that can leave rust deposits in carburetors and fuel pumps. So what can you do to keep your machine safe? • Don’t use fuel station pumps that blend gasoline with greater than 10 percent ethanol (E10). • Don’t dispense E15 into unmarked containers because you may forget that it is E15 in the gas can.

• Don’t siphon gas from a car or truck for use in your ATV because you may be filling your ATV gas tank with E15. • Contact gas stations in your area and let them know that you have concerns about E15. If a retail location hears enough concerns from consumers then maybe they won’t sell E15. • Use the Get Involved webpage at www.atvaonline.com > Rights > Get Involved to contact your lawmakers to express concerns on the issue. More voices chiming in on the issue will have more impact. Recently, the AMA delivered almost 30,000 signatures to the EPA in opposition to the agency’s proposal to increase the amount of ethanol in the nation’s fuel. The EPA proposed setting the Renewable Fuel Standard for 2014 at the levels that were actually produced and used, which totaled 15.93 billion gallons. But for 2015, the standard rises to 16.3 billion gallons. And for 2016, the total increases again, to 17.4 billion gallons. By forcing higher-ethanol fuel blends into the marketplace, the E10 most Americans currently rely on for their vehicles could become less available — and gasoline without ethanol may become virtually unavailable.

E15 – a gasoline formulation that contains up to 15 percent ethanol by volume – may not be a hot topic of conversation after By Wayne Allard a long day of trail AMA vice president for riding. But it’s a topic government relations that every all-terrain vehicle rider should know more than a little about. No ATVs currently in use in the United States are certified by the EPA to use fuels containing more than 10 percent ethanol. Unfortunately, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency this year offered Renewable Fuel Standard proposals that would increase the risk of accidently putting E15 in your gas tank by forcing the widespread availability of higher-ethanol fuel blends. Why should you be concerned? If you inadvertently put E15 into your fuel tank you may cause engine and fuel system

NEWS Off-Highway Activists Needed The U.S. Forest Service is seeking nominations for its Recreation Resource Advisory Committees, which provides advice and recommendations on recreation fees to the Forest Service and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. RRACs are structured to help ensure motorized users are well represented, so it is important that the off-highway vehicle community steps forward to fill any vacancies that occur. Additional information concerning the Recreation RACs, including current openings, can be found by visiting the Recreation RACs website at: http://www. fs.fed.us/passespermits/rrac-org-links. shtml.

Minnesota County Allows ATVs On Roads Lake County in northeastern Minnesota now allows ATVs on almost all of its roads to access ATV trails. The only county roads not open to ATVs are Fernberg Road from Lake One to Highway 169 and Highway 2 from County Road 15 to Upland Trail near Toimi. ATV riders must observe a speed limit of 40 mph unless the posted limit is lower than 40 mph.

For true champions, winning the AMA No. 1 plate isn’t everything...

Iowa Town Rejects Allowing ATVs On Roads The Glidden, Iowa, City Council has rejected a bill that would have allowed ATVs to use city streets. Even though the proposed law passed two of three required readings, it was voted down on the third reading because of public concerns about safety. Glidden is in Carroll County, which allows ATVs on county roads.

It takes a lot for an ATV or motorcycle racer to earn the prestigious AMA No. 1 plate: a lot of talent, a lot of courage, a lot of determination. After all, the best racers in America are all chasing the dream: to hoist the AMA No. 1 plate above their head at the end of race day. Many try. Few succeed. There’s no greater challenge for an ATV or motorcycle racer. And there’s no sweeter victory for the winner. The AMA No. 1 plate proves that the racer went head-tohead against the best of the best, and won. No explanation needed. Whether racing as an amateur or a pro, the AMA No. 1 plate represents an incredible accomplishment that can never be taken away. One for the AMA record books. There’s nothing better.

NEWS New Jersey Township Rejects ATV Park Idea The West Milford, N.J., Township Council has rejected a proposal to fund a feasibility study for an ATV park. The council supported the idea earlier but decided in late July to back away from the proposal. The study was proposed as a step toward creating a legal place for ATV riders to ride. However, when certain parcels were mentioned as possible ATV park sites area residents expressed concerns.

Ohio ATV Riders May Lose Trails At Perry State Forest The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is considering leasing out land at the Perry State Forest to mining interests, which could make many of the existing ATV trails offlimits. If the land is leased, it would involve strip mining for coal. That could affect 12 of the 16 miles of mapped motorized trails. A mining company has taken core

samples at the Perry State Forest and mining interests have had initial discussions with the state about leasing the land. The state has acquired 137 acres of land adjacent to the Perry State Forest. ATV advocates hope the state will use that land to replace some of the lost trails.

Utah’s state attorney general is looking into whether the federal government legally closed Recapture Canyon in San Juan County. Utah Gov. Gary Herbert asked for the investigation. Some believe federal officials overstepped their bounds when they made the canyon off-limits to motorized vehicles because local authorities allegedly have a right of way in the canyon. ATV riders rode in the off-limits Recapture Canyon in May 2014 to protest federal government land closures to ATVs. The action led to several arrests.

Queensbury, N.Y., Bans ATVs From Town Land The Queensbury Town Board in New York has passed a law prohibiting the use of ATVs and snowmobiles on city property except on designated trails. Violators face fines of up to $500 for a first offense and $950 for a second offense. Plus, violators must pay for any damage they cause. The law is in response to illegal riding in town parks.

Polaris Unveils New Mudder Models For 2016 Polaris has released its ATV lineup for 2016, and it includes three new Sportsman vehicles, including two designed for mud riding. Polaris reports that it has partnered with High Lifter to offer two quads for the mud: the 85-horsepower Sportsman XP 1000 High Lifter Edition in Stealth Black ($13,999 MSRP) and the 78-horsepower Sportsman 850 High Lifter edition ($9,999) in orange. To ensure the power plants breathe in challenging conditions, they feature shielded, high-engine air and clutch intake/outlets and high-mounted vent lines. Both vehicles are equipped with a relocated, rack-mounted radiator with inverted dual fans that pull clean air through the bottom of the radiator for improved cooling and reduced mud clogging.

2016 Sportsman 450 HO

6 November/December 2015

For improved torque, both machines offer high and low transmission with lower gearing. And to put the increased power to the ground, the XP 1000 has Polaris’ High Performance Close Ratio Front Drive to provide quicker, ondemand four-wheel drive engagement. Both machines come standard with 29.5-inch High Lifter Outlaw II tires and a redesigned suspension featuring stiffer springs for higher ground clearance, plus front and rear high-arched, constant radius dual A-arms, and a new articulating rear suspension to maximize traction in deep mud pits. Additions on the 1000 model include custom paint and graphics, aluminum wheels, EPS (electric power steering) and a handlebar-mounted mud bar for greater control. It also features color-matched, high-mounted front and rear bumpers, and a factoryinstalled 3,500-pound winch with sealed handlebar switch and front tow hooks. The Sportsman 450 HO is an entrylevel option. It offers power and performance for a suggested retail price of $5,999. The model features the ProStar engine which claims to deliver 31 horsepower. The vehicle shares many of the attributes found on the Sportsman 570, including on-demand AWD, MacPherson Strut front suspension, and adjustable independent rear suspension. The 450 HO model comes in Sage Green and Velocity Blue. Plus, there are some changes to the rest of the line for 2016, including stronger front half shafts and improved driveline on all 850cc and 1,000cc models and a new CST trail tire on the 850. The 450cc HO and 570cc models have a new seat with a more durable seat base, a more powerful 660watt stator to run more accessories, and exhaust pipe shielding.

Pennsylvania riders sure have it good, with some of the best riding areas in the country. The latest to come to our attention is the Lost Trails ATV Adventure Park, a family friendly park in Dunmore, Pa., 25 minutes north of the Pocono Mountains. The park, which opened in 2011 for year-round recreational riding, welcomes ATV and dirt bike riders. The park’s website (www. ridelosttrails.com) describes the trails as “technical and fun.” “Our new location has over 2,000 acres providing for a wide variety of terrain-changing trails from mild to wild, scenic ridges, rock crawls, mud runs and, of course, those meandering lazy trails twisting throughout the mountainside,” the website says. “Some of the most breath-taking vistas the Pocono Mountains have to offer are waiting as you journey over 2,000 feet in elevation change.” Trails are mapped, marked and color coded for difficulty. The park also offers kids’ riding areas that include a quarter-mile minimoto track featuring small jumps and a banked turn, a quarter-mile peewee trail circuit with a swooping turn and hill climb, and something called “The Boneyard.” While that sounds ominous, it isn’t. The Boneyard is a mini-ATV park with about 5 miles of easy trails that twist and turn through the woods. There are also a couple mud bogs and obstacles that help make the ride enjoyable for kids as well as adults. The park invites riders to bring their own machines or go on guided tours on ATVs rented at the park.

Are ATVs

COOL

Or What?

You know ATVs are cool. But what about your friends who don’t ride? Have you ever tried to explain to them why riding quads is so much fun? Here are several ways that make ATV riding so awesome. Do you have more ideas to suggest? Let us know at editor@atvaonline.com.

What’s Cool About Riding ATVs 1 The gear:You get to wear really colorful or camo-themed gear – pants, jersey, gloves, helmet and boots. 2 The skill: It takes a lot to ride a quad:You need training, ability and practice. 3 ATV lingo:You speak a special language with other ATV riders. Mention nerf bars to non-ATVers and watch them raise their eyebrows. 4 The escape:You can ride out to the trail and just get away from it all – experience the outdoors in a way that others can’t. 5 The fun:Your neighbors, and maybe even some of your family members, think you’re having too much fun. Or maybe they’re just jealous. 6 The adventure: When you are heading out somewhere on a quad, you know you are going to have an adventure.

8 November/December 2015

7 The chores: That’s right, even chores are fun when you’re riding an ATV. 8 Big thrills: The thrill of riding an ATV is exciting. 9 The peace and quiet:You can get to the middle of nowhere without breathing hard. The serious workout: Or, be out of breath in minutes when you hit the tough stuff on the trails. The map lover: Other people read books. You read maps. The view: Spectacular views around every turn and over every hill. The dirt: A little mud can be a lot of fun.

Fun Stuff To Do With Your Quad

Why Riding With Friends Is Fun

Why Riding Well Feels Good

1 You can swap quads with the other riders. So if your machine is a two-wheel drive, you can experience a four-wheel drive. And if you end up riding a smaller machine, you’ll discover how light and maneuverable they can be.

1 Riding whoops and jumping well are skills that take time and practice to master. It feels great when you do it right.

2 The camaraderie among friends to get up the hill or back to camp gets the blood pumping. 3 When your friend breaks down you can tow his or her machine and then razz the rider. 4 If you break down, there is a friend there to tow you out (because you sure aren’t going to be able to push your quad out).

2 Few things are as fun as powering out of a corner on the perfect line. 3 Launching off the starting line carrying a power wheelie can’t be done by everyone. 4 A quad is its own roller coaster, and you control the speed and thrills.

5 Get a billet gas cap. 6 Buy those T-handle wrenches you’ve always wanted. 7 Get a global positioning system and use it!

Great Things Related to ATV Racing 1 You can wear the same gear as your favorite AMA ATV Pro racer, and enjoy the same protection.

3 Join a local club, or form your own. 4 Turn your favorite photo of you on an ATV into a holiday card. Do it now because the holidays will be here sooner than you think! 5 Make plans to attend an AMA ATV Pro Racing competition and then do it. 6 Set up a competition night to play the “MX vs. ATV: Supercross” computer game with a bunch of your friends. 7 Get stickers or a sticker kit and make your ATV look just like the ATV ridden by your favorite AMA ATV Pro racer.

2 You can go to an AMA ATV Pro race and actually walk in the pits and talk with the racers. 3 Take a photo of your favorite pro racer and share it on social media with the hashtag #amaracing. 4 Sometimes, old age and skill can beat youth and enthusiasm. 5 Guessing who’s going to win this weekend .

5 It’s always fun to swap stories at the end of a great ride. “You did what?”

racing Chad Wienen Wins Fourth ATV Motocross Title In Tennessee Chad Wienen earned his fourth consecutive professional motocross title in the in the AMA Mtn. Dew ATV Motocross National Championship Series at the season finale at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn., Aug. 9. Just 15 points separated the top two riders in the pro class standings: Walsh Race Craft Yamaha’s Wienen and Corrosion Specialties Honda’s Joel Hetrick. Their season-long battle came down to the final checkered flag with Wienen taking the win. When the first moto got under way, Hetrick grabbed the holeshot with Wienen in tow. H&M Motorsports Honda’s David Haagsma Jr. was in third. Wienen wasn’t able to keep up with the pace of his rival and soon settled into the runner-up spot, with Haagsma third and Maxxis Yamaha rider Thomas Brown fourth. Hetrick took his 11th moto win 5.591 seconds ahead of Wienen, with Brown a distant third, more than a half minute back. Entering the final moto of 2015, 12 points separated Wienen and Hetrick, meaning Wienen needed to finish eighth or better if Hetrick went on to record a 1-1 sweep. Out of the gate, Team BTF Honda’s Joe Byrd grabbed the holeshot, just ahead of Root River Racing Honda’s Josh Upperman. Upperman would take the lead by the end of the first lap, with Wienen making a charge into second and Haagsma third. Hetrick had his work cut out for him, beginning the moto in fifth, which forced him to chase down Wienen. Wienen put even more pressure on Hetrick by taking the top spot away from Upperman. Hetrick responded by moving up a position, but then

Brown was even more impressive in the second moto, overcoming a seventh-place start to eventually move

into second just before the halfway point. Wienen cruised to victory 8.983 seconds ahead of Brown, who came under fire in the closing laps from a hard-charging Hetrick, after the Honda rider raced his way back into podium contention. Wienen’s 2-1 moto results not only gave him the overall win on the day over Hetrick’s 1-3, but also the AMA Pro ATV Championship. Brown landed on the overall podium for the eighth time with a hard-fought third-place finish (3-2). Haagsma Jr. finished fourth (5-4).

Wienen finished the 2015 season with a 17-point edge over Hetrick in the standings, while Brown rounded out the top three championship finishers, 56 back from Wienen. With his fourth consecutive AMA Pro ATV crown, Wienen added to his already historic legacy by becoming just the second rider in ATVMX history to win that many championships in a row, joining icon Gary Denton. Additionally, Wienen becomes just the third four-time titleholder ever alongside Denton, who has eight championships, and Jeremiah Jones, with four.

McClure controlled the lead in the early portions of the race before championship points leader CST/ PirateMX.com’s Adam McGill worked his way into the lead on the third lap. As the white flag flew, Fasttrax/Wolf Racingbacked Brian Wolf worked his way into the lead on adjusted time with McGill and AmPro Yamaha’s Walker Fowler out front with the physical lead. With a mile to go, McGill found himself stuck in the thick, deep mud of the infamous “Howard’s Hole.” McClure capitalized on the mistake and took the lead. Fowler would challenge him to the final corners, but McClure was able to hold on to come away with his first GNCC overall win. Fowler took second place overall. This strong finish coupled with McGill’s misfortune, resulting in an eighth-place finish, tightened up the championship points gap as the series headed into

You don’t need to be an AMA Pro ATVMX super star to be an ATV rider of the AMA. You can join just to support the sport and be a part of a national grassroots movement of riders who fight anti-ATVing forces to protect your freedom to ride and race. It’s where riders belong. With an AMA membership you get a special ATV affinity card, ATV News and American Motorcyclist magazine, hundreds of dollars in discounts, and AMA Roadside Assistance at no cost*. Most of all, you’ll stand with Chad, Thomas and Josh to protect the sport we all love and safeguard it for future generations. AMA is where you belong. Join us.
