Eat American Pistachios and Celebrate Good Nutrition Pistachios have protein, beneficial fats, fiber and other important nutrients your body needs every day. Current research highlights key health and nutrition properties of pistachios. To help spread the good news, APG created an infographic that highlights the many reasons why pistachios should be eaten. This educational piece was sent to over 600 influential health professionals via our quarterly nutrition e-newsletter, American Pistachios Nutrition Unshelled, on National Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day, March 11.

QUALITY

Diet Quality: Pistachio eaters tend to have better diets overall and eat more fiber, vitamins and minerals Pistachios are rich in plant compounds with health protective activity, such as phenolic compounds, carotenoids, and phytosterols Pistachios are a plant source of protein (and amino acid arginine) and are lower in fat and carbohydrates than most nuts 1

WEIGHT

Blood Sugar Control: High fiber, healthy fats, and health protective compounds in pistachios may help maintain healthy blood glucose levels

MANAGEMENT

Weight Management: Pistachios are 5 percent lower in calories than estimated previously Research shows that eating pistachios is not associated with weight gain or obesity and is linked with reduced waist circumference Some studies show that choosing in-shell pistachios (opposed to unshelled) may result in reduced calorie intake due to the visual cue of empty pistachio shells

HEART HEALTH

Heart Health: According to recent research, certain nutrients in pistachios may support heart health by lowering LDL (bad) cholesterol, blood pressure, oxidative stress and inflammation, and improving endothelial function

Pistachios are low in carbohydrates and don’t significantly raise blood sugar after eating (low glycemic index) Adding pistachios to a high glycemic meal like potatoes and pasta help reduce glycemic response When added to a meal in place of high-carb food, pistachios may help improve blood glucose control over time

In the U.S.A., the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee recommended diets high in plant-based foods such as pistachios. Just a week after the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee released its report to the Secretary of Health and Human Services and the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), APG celebrated the good news on World Pistachio Day. People who eat tree nuts on a daily basis, including pistachios, are making healthy choices, according to the report. The recommended guidelines emphasize a diet higher in plant-based foods including vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts and seafood to lower the risk of chronic diseases, particularly those associated with obesity. Meet Our Growers, George and Marianne Schweers George Schweers had a game plan, which, five years before he retired from an Air Force career, the family would decide where and what they were going to do after “graduating” from the Air Force. Born and raised on a farm in Nebraska, George’s goal had always been to return to farming. Stationed at Holloman AFB, near Alamogordo, New Mexico, the desert climate was appealing, and George felt there had to be something they could grow there. So, Marianne and their three children Gordon, Laura, and Jean had a mission—find the crop! While researching the crops grown in the deserts of the world, one crop kept coming to the top of the lists—pistachios. Able to be stored as a dry product, a high-value crop and native to the arid climates of the pistachio-producing regions of Iran—a match for New Mexico—the Schweers believed they had found what they would grow in the desert. They hadn’t seen a pistachio tree yet, but they bought land and started preparations. This was in the early 1970s. By 1976, they had the first crop off of their 400 trees. Read More…

PISTACHIO PRODUCTION April 2015 Task List for Pistachios By Bob Beede, University of California Cooperative Extension Farm Advisor, Emeritus, in Hanford Field Observations: I went to Kern County to look at oiled and non-oiled pistachios with my good buddy, Carl Fanucchi, on March 12 and 19. Much of this effort was to gain personal knowledge of how oiling in mid- to late-January is performing. Carl has supported this timing for many years, but there has never been a replicated trial done to confirm its performance. I have also never seen any bud push and bloom rating reports from growers or PCAs in the area that compared treated and non-treated trees. UC is all about having replicated data to support its educational program. The reasons for this are hopefully obvious to you, even though you believe the Coffee Shop Trials more than you do ours! In our day-long tours from Tejon to Buttonwillow, nine year-old oiled Kerman trees, rated March 19 in Buttonwillow, were already at 60 percent early leaf out, 10-15 percent bloom, and 15-20 percent post-bloom. The oiled Peters males showed 5-10 percent bloom, and 25-30 percent pre-bloom. This orchard was oiled January 20, 2015. Unoiled Kerman trees in the same orchard were at 3-5 percent early leaf out, and 30-50 percent flower bud swell. The unoiled Peters showed about 50 percent flower bud swell, and only about 30 percent green tip. Read More‌
