APG Journalist Event with Chef Nancy Silverton and Nutritionist Cheryl Forberg

Over 23 influential journalists attended a luncheon Mediterranean cuisine featuring pistachios prepared by James Beard award-winning chef, Nancy Silverton. Held at Chef Silverton’s Melrose Avenue hot spot, chi SPACCA restaurant in Los Angeles, she demonstrated the culinary possibilities of APG’ s beautiful green nut by featuring it as the centerpiece in some very modern recipes. The four-course menu included a bacon terrine with pistachios, a pistachio pizza with panna, red onion, Castelvetrano olives, thyme and fennel pollens, a rucola and wild cress salad with pistachio aillade, and a marinated

APG ambassador, Cheryl Forberg, chef and nutritionist for TV’s The Biggest Loser and author of A Small Guide to Losing Big, shared her insight on the Mediterranean Diet and the top secrets for weight loss that includes pistachios. According to Forberg, “Pistachios are the ideal weight-loss aid. They are packed with protein and a little healthy fat. Not only are they healthy, but they are also satiating.”

radicchio and beet salad with goat cheese and crushed pistachios. Our versatile nut was even incorporated into a swordfish entree and a gelato dessert.

To further demonstrate pistachio’s versatility the journalists were given gift bags filled with pistachio products including a jar of unshelled nuts, one of shelled nuts, a pack of caramelized nuts, chocolatecovered pistachios, a bottle of rare pistachio oil, and a jar of pistachio butter.

CAVENDISH W

STAGE 1, 2, 5 AND 8 OF THE AMGEN APG ambassador, pro cyclist Mark Cavendish, claimed stage 1, stage 2, stage 5, and stage 8 wins in the AMGEN Tour of California. In the first stage, he won by several bike lengths and finished the 126.2-mile flat road race in 4 hours, 43 minutes, 27 seconds. In 2014 and 2010, he also took the opening stage victories in Sacramento.

On Monday, Cavendish did it again winning stage 2. At the end of the 120.4-mile stage from Nevada City to Lodi, it came down to a photo finish with

Cavendish won by a hair. Stage 5 started in Santa Barbara and finished in a massive field sprint on perfect, wide roads in Santa Clarita. Cavendish took stage 8 in great form with a sprint to the finish line in Pasadena.

APG Ambassador, Mark Cavendish, Competing in the Tour de France JULY 4 – 26, 2015 Cavendish has won 25 stages at the Tour de France, putting him third on the list of all-time winners. Cavendish is a worldchampion cyclist who specializes in sprint finishes, and this year he is looking to add to his total.

What to watch: Stages 2, 5 and 7 of the Tour de France are flat and fast, suited for sprinters, providing Cavendish with his golden opportunity to win.

Collegiate Professional Sports Dietitian Association (CPSDA) Conference APG participated once again in CPSDA’s Annual Conference held in Point Clear, Alabama, on May 18-21, 2015. Over 300 of the nation’s top 100 influential sports nutrition experts (Sports RDs) from universities, professional teams, Olympic and professional training centers, and members of the U.S. military and law enforcement attended the event.

APG demonstrated pistachio’s power for fueling athletes with samples of APG’s newest on-trend recipe, American Pistachios Sport Bar. The

latest research and sport nutrition infographics were distributed and booth visitors had the opportunity to win 100 days of pistachios by completing a short questionnaire.

CPSDA’s member-driven, national not-forprofit organization speaks with one voice on behalf of America’s leading Sports RDs, and is founded on the fundamental “food first” principle that whole foods such as pistachios are the best fuel. They represent the vast majority of Advanced Practice Registered Dietitians in the United States who work full-time with athletes.

Today’s Dietitian Spring Symposium Over 500 registered dietitians, certified diabetes educators, dietary managers, food service directors and influential health and fitness publication editors attended this symposium. The event provided APG the venue to promote American pistachios and educate the nation’s most powerful nutrition experts. American pistachios were showcased with APG 100-calorie sample packs and the latest in pistachios research and APG collateral materials.

APG ambassador, Cheryl Forberg (Biggest Loser nutritionist), was the keynote speaker. Other speakers included APG nutrition spokesperson, Sharon Palmer, RDN, The Plant-Powered Dietitian.

Seoul Food and Hotel Trade Show Trade shows, specifically food service and hospitality expos, are important events for professionals involved in the food service industry. Many attendees return year after year because they know food expos are the best place to see and learn about the newest products, trends and technology as well as to meet with the companies who provide them.

This past May, in Seoul South Korea, APG participated in Korea’s longest running, and Asia’s third largest food expo — South Korea’s Seoul Food and Hotel International Trade Show, held May 12-15, 2015. It was APG’s opportunity to showcase American pistachios and educate some of the world’s most influential food service industry leaders.

More than 54,000 food service buyers, importers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers and manufacturers attended the expo. APG received over 1,000 booth visitors. American pistachios were showcased with inshell and kernel samples; informational conversations with key target audience members took place.

Mother’s Day Facebook Recipe Contest In Germany, APG and Lisa Freundeskreis, an active women’s social community, held a recipe contest in celebration of Mother’s Day. Three popular German bloggers, Sarah (Sarah’s hotspot), Maria and Mara (maras Wonderland), were invited to submit a Mother’s Day recipe using American pistachios. The recipes were then posted on APG’s and Lisa Freundeskreis’ Facebook pages, and fans were invited to vote for their favorite recipe (over 200 participated). Then their name was entered into a drawing to win an American Pistachio Cooking kit that included American pistachios, a cookbook, mixer, and a food container.

The recipes and beautiful photos were posted on APG’s websites around the world as part of our global Mother’s Day message.

Lisa Freundeskreis is a women’s social community based on the German women’s magazine Lisa (circulation 1.4 million, over 40,000 Facebook fans, 70,000 unique visitors / month, 54,000 newsletter subscribers).

Cibo a Regola d’Arte 2015 (Food Rule of Art) Cibo a Regola d’Arte is the most important event for Milanese foodies. Held May 19 -24 in Milan, Italy, it was an excursion into the culture of food and the discovery and rediscovery of flavors, tastes, smells, territories, histories and traditions. The protagonists of international culinary trends are showcased in free workshops with awarded master chefs, cooking shows, wine tastings, aperitifs, dinners and meetings with the champions of Italian cuisine.

APG ambassador, Stefania Corrado, demonstrated the gastronomic versatility of pistachios in the event’s cooking show. Held at Art Theater of Triennale, one of the most renown centers for contemporary art, architecture and design in Italy, Chef Stefania prepared, spaghetti with pesto sauce made with American pistachios and Porto Santo Spirito shrimps. After the demonstration, the audience, which included Italy’s shortlist of food bloggers as well as consumers, was treated to her delectable creation.

Over 25,000 attended the event including journalists, food bloggers and consumers. Chef Stefania’s demonstration at the event generated over 2 million impressions for American pistachios in Italy.

APG and California Bakery Team Up for Culinary Events in Italy Chef Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution Day, MAY 15 Held in conjunction with the Food Revolution Day sponsored by celebrity Chef Jamie Oliver, from the U.K., to promote nutrition, health and fitness, the event offered free cooking classes for three- to six-year-old children and their parents. APG participated in the activities with California Bakery pastry chefs, Michela Toni and Silvia Pais, teaching the families how to make nutritious and delicious Power Pistachio Bars.

Over 100 mall visitors were treated to a live baking and tasting class. The star recipe of the day: Choco Pistachio Cookies. The workshop was held at the GAP store in Milan.

Milan’s Social Cooking Experience Expo, MAY 22 Milan’s Chamber of Commerce held a series of cooking workshops throughout the city with the goal of highlighting the city’s international cuisine and cultures. A free baking class on American gastronomy and how healthy food can also be delicious was held at the California Bakery in Milan.

Pastry chefs, Michele Toni and Silvia Pais, led the class and demonstrated how to prepare American Pistachios White Chocolate muffins.

APG Sampling Events APG sample packs were included in the goodie bags of fitness events in Spain, Germany and in the U.S.A. Through our sample pack program we have educated thousands of active consumers who participated in fitness events around the world. Our 100-calorie sample packs feature pistachio nutrition facts and comparisons with other healthy foods, as well as provide the athletes with the ideal post-race snack.

PISTACHIO PRODUCTION July-August, 2015 Orchard Task List for Pistachios

Crop Update: Depending upon your location, harvest should be about as early as last year, which was about 10 days ahead of average. Some growers reported the beginning of kernel filling as early as June 15 this year, which is another strong index for early maturity. However, many growers that I interviewed indicated that they had not yet seen any growth of the embryo, even in oiled blocks. At this early stage in kernel growth, I do not know if this is an indication of slightly delayed development or a high percentage of blanking associated with insufficient chilling. Based upon considerable hours spent monitoring several orchards this spring, with Carl Fanucchi near Buttonwillow, Tejon, and Laval Road, I am of the opinion that Kern County suffered a serious deficit in chill accumulation.

Meet Our Growers –

THE ROBINSON FAMILY Farming and agriculture flow through Gary Robinson’s veins. Born and raised on a dairy farm in Hanford, California, Gary decided to go beyond just experience and delve into the business side of agriculture, so off to college he went. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural business from Fresno State University, and a Master of Science degree in agricultural science and management from UC Davis.

And doors of opportunity opened. Some of Gary’s enterprising college friends decided to plant orchards in California and Arizona.

Gary’s expertise in development and operations made him the perfect person to manage those orchards. Then after a year of in-the-field experience, Gary decided to seek out other enterprising groups who were interested in developing pistachios. As a result, Gary planted the first of many pistachio orchards on Fresno County’s historical west side.

Then in the spring of 1997, Robinson Family Farms began with the planting of their own pistachio orchard. And their business blossomed. Today, Gary, along with his wife Karen and daughter Kristi, farm over 390 acres of pistachios orchards on the west side of Fresno County, near Huron and Three Rocks.

The family also farms almonds and walnuts.

Gary actively invests his time in helping the pistachio industry grow. He currently serves on both the California Pistachio Research Board and also on the Administrative Committee for Pistachios. To relax and maintain a wellrounded life, Gary flies planes and hikes.
