Welcome to Burn All Night, and welcome to our 2017/18 Season! This production is a world-premiere musical developed specifically for OBERON’s club-theater environment. Inspired by youth culture on the eve of global catastrophe, the show immerses us in live music and dance in order to pose questions which resonate deeply in our current moment: in times of uncertainty, how do we know which way to go? What do we fight for? Burn All Night is the work of a team of emerging artists. Following his work as an actor in both musical theater and television, Andy Mientus (“Smash,” Spring Awakening) is making his debut as a writer. The creators of this production’s music are Van Hughes, Brett Moses, and Nicholas LaGrasta— members of the synth-pop band Teen Commandments, all making their A.R.T. debuts with this show. We also welcome director Jenny Koons, whose work on productions including A Sucker Emcee, Theatre for One, and Queen of the Night, as well as on social justice initiatives including The Ghostlight Project, demonstrates her passion for reimaging the ways that we assemble as both artists and citizens. Choreographer Sam Pinkleton returns to A.R.T. following his Tony-nominated work on Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812; OBERON audiences may also recognize his work from ONTHEFLOOR, RoosevElvis, and Kansas City Choir Boy. Joining these artists are a remarkable ensemble of actors and musicians— including returning A.R.T. actors MJ Rodriguez (Trans Scripts, Part I: The Women), Ken Clark (Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812), and Jamar Williams (Witness Uganda). Over the course of this production’s rehearsal process here in Cambridge, this ensemble has collaborated in bringing to life the characters you are about to meet. Born out of anxiety about the end of the world, this show is a powerful reminder of the values of community and creation.

A Note from Writer Andy Mientus In the spring of 2008, a buddy of mine stopped a college house party cold when he announced casually that he’d be dead in four years. Alarmed, I pulled him aside and asked him if he was thinking of harming himself or hiding some illness or addiction. Calmly, he told me no, that we would all be dead, because the apocalypse was coming on December 21, 2012. That fall, at my 22nd birthday party, I met Van Hughes in a bathtub as I went to make sure a friend was vomiting in the toilet rather than the bidet as instructed. (She failed the task.) In the time between that spring

college party and my birthday in the fall, my father died suddenly, and I dropped out of school to go on the road with a musical. I wasn’t making very much money, but it was just enough to afford my very worst behavior. I know now that I was grieving, but at the time, I felt that I was making the most of the ticking time bomb I had inherited from generations past. Immediate pleasure was far more reliable than long-term goals because we could be gone at any moment. Friends and lovers seemed more appealing than family because you could always get more friends and lovers. I put all of this anxiety and revelry into a collection of disparate scenes with some tuneless poems

purely to have some place to put it. Not much remains from those messy first sketches except an idea that a story about youth and nightlife should be told with the music of youth and nightlife—not a theatrical approximation of those sounds, but the real thing. It wasn’t a revolutionary idea, but a return to form. In the Golden Age, you would hear "Hey There" in The Pajama Game onstage and then go home and hear it on the radio. When musicals were at the zenith of their popularity, there was no divide between “pop” and “show tunes.” I thought of the boy in the bathtub. I Facebooked Van, who happened to know and sometimes write with a synth-pop band, Teen Commandments. They agreed to try writing a couple of songs. It was the first instance of inexplicable serendipity that has led us here, tonight, to you. Thankfully, December 2012 came and went without incident, but I wish I could say I felt more optimistic about what lies ahead for us all. Since then, the Earth has gotten warmer, the phones have gotten smarter, the bombs reach further, and our politics have gotten uglier. But tonight, in this space where theater and nightlife mesh (more serendipity), we have a show for you. In its creation over many years, Burn All Night has brought me inspiring friends and collaborators, newfound passion for what has always made this genre magical, and best of all, forgiveness and even affection for that younger, messier me. People make mistakes when they are scared. It’s not the end of the world.

Creative Team ANDY MIENTUS Book & Lyrics A.R.T.: Debut. Andy Mientus makes his theatrical writing debut with Burn All Night. Together with his husband, Michael Arden, he conceived Deaf West Theatre’s Tony Award-nominated revival of Spring Awakening, in which he also acted at the Wallis Annenberg Center in Los Angeles and the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on Broadway. As an actor, he has appeared on Broadway, Off-Broadway, at theaters such as The Mark Taper Forum and The Kennedy Center, and on television. He has twice been named in Out Magazine’s list of the 100 most compelling LGBT people of the year. Education: Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Arts, University of Michigan. VAN HUGHES Music A.R.T.: Debut. Van Hughes is known for his work as an actor, singer/ instrumentalist, and composer. He starred in Green Day’s American Idiot on Broadway opposite Billie Joe Armstrong and led the US Tour. Other Broadway credits: Deaf West’s Spring Awakening, 9 to 5, and Hairspray. He appeared in both Sex and the City films, Rachel Getting Married, and guest-starred on Law & Order: SVU, Royal Pains, and One Life To Live. FOUNDING DIRECTOR Robert Brustein
The American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) at Harvard University is a leading force in the American theater, producing groundbreaking work in Cambridge and beyond. The A.R.T. was founded in 1980 by Robert Brustein, who served as Artistic Director until 2002, when he was succeeded by Robert Woodruff. Diane Paulus began her tenure as Artistic Director in 2008. Under the leadership of Paulus and Executive Director Diane Quinn, the A.R.T. seeks to expand the boundaries of theater by programming events that immerse audiences in transformative theatrical experiences. Throughout its history, the A.R.T. has been honored with many distinguished awards, including the Tony Award for Best New Play for All the Way (2014); consecutive Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Musical for Pippin (2013) and The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess (2012), both of which Paulus directed; a Pulitzer Prize; a Jujamcyn Prize for outstanding contribution to the development of creative talent; the Regional Theater Tony Award; and numerous Elliot Norton and IRNE Awards. The A.R.T. collaborates with artists around the world to develop and create work in new ways. It is currently engaged in a number of multi-year projects, including a new collaboration with Harvard's Center for the Environment that will result in the development of new work over several years. Under Paulus’s leadership, the A.R.T.’s club theater, OBERON, has been an incubator for local and emerging artists and has attracted national attention for its innovative programming and business models. As the professional theater on the campus of Harvard University, the A.R.T. catalyzes discourse, interdisciplinary collaboration, and creative exchange among a wide range of academic departments, institutions, students, and faculty members, acting as a conduit between its community of artists and the university. The A.R.T. plays a central role in Harvard's undergraduate Theater, Dance, and Media concentration. The A.R.T. Institute for Advanced Theater Training, which is run in partnership with the Moscow Art Theatre School, offers graduate training in acting, dramaturgy, and voice. Dedicated to making great theater accessible, the A.R.T. actively engages more than 5,000 community members and local students annually in project-based partnerships, workshops, conversations with artists, and other enrichment activities both at the theater and across the Greater Boston area. Through all of these initiatives, the A.R.T. is dedicated to producing world-class performances in which the audience is central to the theatrical experience. 21

Education Experience A.R.T. Education Experiences spark meaningful discourse, in-school and out. In addition to fostering creativity, collaboration, and intellectual curiosity in our community, we support teachers with free artsintegrated teaching tools and affordable tickets to world-class theater at the A.R.T. Community Connections A.R.T. partners with Boston-area non-profit organizations, bringing high-quality arts experiences to underserved families and individuals. Community Connections pairs subsidized tickets to A.R.T. performances with enrichment programming ranging from private artist talks to in-depth workshops.
A.R.T. Kids Company Children ages 5–10 join us on Saturday mornings in the fall and spring to learn the fundamentals of theater by creating re-imaginings of classic and contemporary tales, live! Summer 2017 also marked the launch of the first-ever A.R.T. Kids Company Jamboree, a weeklong half-day program integrating storytelling with STEM learning. Proclamation An ensemble of local high school juniors and seniors team up with A.R.T. artists and Harvard scholars for an eight-week afterschool play-making intensive. The result is a vivid, provocative, and fresh performance work.
