WELCOME TO JAGGED LITTLE PILL As a director, I am drawn to stories that are vitally relevant to our world today. With its courageous, boundary-shattering articulation of pain, healing, and empowerment, Alanis Morissette’s 1995 album has impacted a whole generation of listeners and artists. Alanis’s music urges us to feel—even though it may be easier to remain numb. For me, the visceral, cathartic nature of Jagged Little Pill conjures ancient Greek drama, in which a character’s crisis of recognition reflects our need as a society to confront difficult truths in order to live, learn, and grow. An intense and profound collaboration has been at the core of our creative journey. Writer Diablo Cody, choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, music supervisor, orchestrator and arranger Tom Kitt, and I have all come together out of a shared love for Alanis’s songs and a belief in their necessity for our world today. I am honored that all of these artists are making their A.R.T. debuts with this production. Lastly, I am so grateful to the entire company and team behind this production for their willingness to throw themselves so deeply and fearlessly into the world premiere of this musical.

A Note from Writer Diablo Cody I was sixteen years old the first time I heard the voice of Alanis Morissette. Well, technically that isn’t true—I grew up watching “You Can’t Do That on Television,” the Canadian kiddie show on which a young Alanis starred. But when I say “the voice of Alanis Morissette,” I’m not referring to the literal vibrations created by her laryngeal folds. I’m talking about the powerful and primal flow of essential Alanis-ness that is her legendary album, Jagged Little Pill. This was not just a collection of songs, you understand. This was a seismic event that shifted the plates of pop culture and redefined irony for a generation. Alanis Morissette, rock star, was more than a voice. She was a Voice. It was 1995, and I was hanging out in my bedroom in Lemont, Illinois, a small town with nine churches and zero bookstores. I was listening to Q101, “Chicago’s Rock Alternative,” like I did every day after school. Though the grunge trend had expired like a tub of old yogurt, rock radio was still dominated by growling, lank-haired dudes with low-slung guitars and Big Muff distortion pedals. Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder had changed the game by championing feminist causes, but the rock scene in general still felt like the same old macho circlejerk it had been since forever. The “girl bands” that did get airplay at the time were all punk bravado and defiance—very necessary, but not always relatable to me as a vulnerable and confused Catholic girl who had SO MANY FEELINGS and was often afraid to express them. There was an Alanis-shaped hole in my heart; I just didn’t know it yet. So there I was, in my bedroom, flipping through Sassy magazine and painting my nails with Wite-Out as I listened to the radio. As the song ended—let’s say it was “Cumbersome” by Seven Mary Three—the DJ broke in, sounding way more enthusiastic than usual. “I am so psyched to play this next song,” the DJ said—again, this type of editorializing was rare on Q101, a big corporate radio station. “It’s from a new singer named Alanis Morissette, and it’s going to blow your mind. Here’s ‘You Oughta Know.’” Curiosity piqued, I twisted the volume knob on my Sony boombox. A trembling voice filled the room—not just a voice, but a Voice: Alanis’s brave, forceful, naked Voice revealing itself for the first time. It was an immediate shock to the system. After a parade of grunge singers cocooning themselves in flannel and mumbling purposely vague lyrics, here, at last, was someone ready to expose her soul. And “You Oughta Know” was just the beginning— 10
the beginning of the beginning. As we would soon discover, there was so much more to this artist than just spite and rage; on Jagged Little Pill she revealed herself to be tender, spiritual, shameless, kindhearted, eternally questioning, and utterly assured all at once. Shockingly, Alanis was only nineteen years old when she wrote these songs with producer Glen Ballard—just a skip ahead of me, age-wise, but miles beyond in terms of artistic maturity. Flash forward twenty-three years later: Many other seminal 90s albums feel preserved in amber: beloved, certainly, but with their vitality confined to the era. But Jagged Little Pill, somehow, is more relevant than ever. It’s an album that tells us to wake up, “swallow it down,” and confront our fears. Most popular music encourages the pursuit of pleasure; Jagged Little Pill actually recommends discomfort. These songs suggest that we subject ourselves to that which hurts (and ultimately heals). That we debride our deepest wounds, even though the process itself can be excruciating. This type of therapeutic instruction continues to be a theme in Alanis’s music to this day, and yet somehow, her songs never feel gloomy or pedantic— actually, they feel euphoric. How?! It’s a miracle that Alanis performs over and over; no wonder Kevin Smith cast her as God in Dogma. Jagged Little Pill was the soundtrack to my seventeenth summer and has become even more meaningful to me as I head into my forty-first. Back in 1995, I never could have imagined I’d someday be tasked with creating a narrative around Alanis’s incredible catalog of songs. Like the music itself, the job has been challenging bliss. Working on this show, I am often struck by how inherently theatrical the music is, even before it’s been rearranged for the theater. The romance, laughter, tears, sex, and loss are already there, embroidered into the lyrics and melodies. I am incredibly proud of my role as translator and midwife in this production. If I’m lucky, I’ll make one of my heroes proud in the process. 11
A Note from Choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui I was seventeen when I heard “You Oughta Know” for the first time. It struck me with its strength, its anger, its beauty, and also its sadness. I had just broken up with my first boyfriend, and as I listened to the lyrics of that song, I knew I was never going to be the same. The song engraved itself on my mind and made me feel like I wasn’t alone. It expressed the raw emotions I was feeling, while also somehow empowering me. It spoke the hard truth and captured the feeling of being betrayed, yet it also inspired me to be resilient and to allow myself to voice anger without shame or self-censorship. I was fascinated and wanted to hear more from this powerful, smart, beautiful, and soulful artist who had created this unique song. What else did Alanis Morissette have to say to me, to teach me? It turns out, a whole lot. Alanis’s music has been a part of my personal journey ever since. I grew up in a small town in Belgium with a Muslim Moroccan father and a Catholic Flemish mother. An “in-between-many-cultures boy,” I realized early on I was gay; I was a vegetarian; I have always been a teetotaler; I was also a small, intellectual, chubby kid who wanted to dance… Basically, I was filled with so-called contradictions. I was a bit of a confusing, crazy case for some, a mystery for others. I felt like an outcast from my earliest memories onwards, and it was a relief to listen to lyrics that came so close to my personal internal monologues. Whatever I was struggling with, Alanis had a song that would tackle it. It felt as if I had found a “like-minded individual” or even a “soul to dig the hole much deeper.” Especially through her second album, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, which I listened to on repeat for what seems like an eternity, I felt I could quiet my mind as my feelings were there, in the music, in her albums, in her voice. The thing is, you don’t become a “fan” of Alanis; you rather fall in love with her, feel her, meet her in her lyrics, agree with her, learn from her, grow up with her. “We’ll flash forward to a few years later…” When I met Diane Paulus I had a similar feeling of recognition—such an 12
inspiring and gentle voice, filled with reason, logic, and artfulness. She spoke about creating a musical based on Alanis’s Jagged Little Pill album and asked me to choreograph it. “How was this going to be possible?” I wondered. But in Diane’s eyes, I saw that she could imagine it. So I said yes. Diablo Cody’s early drafts of the story floored me: this was exactly what I felt I needed to do. I was reminded of why I decided to become an artist in the first place. Listening to Tom Kitt’s arrangements was uncanny; he created a beautiful tapestry, a unity by merging all these soulful songs. It was as if these songs had been written for the story. During the rehearsal process, I think I cried almost every day at some point because of the emotions the work unleashed. It was overwhelming, and that hasn’t been my usual experience as a director or choreographer. The production touches upon very personal and universal issues, most of which we still don’t have clear answers for. Every day we are looking for ways to tackle addiction, racism, and intolerance, and to fight our confusing expectations and the outright delusions in our divided society. The musical felt like the therapy I never had; it felt important, it felt true. I tried to be as honest and open as possible in the process, to share as much as I could, to give it my all.

Creative Team ALANIS MORISSETTE Music, Lyrics A.R.T.: Debut. Since 1995, Alanis Morissette has been one of the most influential singer-songwriter-musicians in contemporary music. Her deeply expressive music and performances have earned vast critical praise, 14 Canadian Juno Awards, 7 Grammy Awards (with an additional 14 nominations), a Golden Globe nomination, and sales of over 60 million albums worldwide. Morissette’s 1995 debut, Jagged Little Pill, was followed by such eclectic and acclaimed albums as Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie (1998), MTV Unplugged (1999), Under Rug Swept (2002), So-Called Chaos (2004), Jagged Little Pill Acoustic (2005), her greatest hits album The Collection (2005), Flavors of Entanglement (2008), Havoc and Bright Lights (2012), and Jagged Little Pill: Collector’s Edition (2015). She also contributed musically to theatrical releases, some of which include The Chronicles of Narnia, Prince of Persia, and City of Angels. In 2015, Alanis was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. Alanis has also donated her time to a number of causes that help raise awareness of and funding for a number of issues including Equality Now, Music for Relief, UN Global Tolerance, “Every Mother Counts” (a CD to which she contributed her song “Magical Child” to help prevent needless maternal deaths), and P.S. Arts. In 2016, Alanis launched Conversation with Alanis Morissette, a monthly podcast that features conversations with a variety of revered authors, doctors, educators and therapists. alanis.com
GLEN BALLARD Music A.R.T.: Debut. Six-time Grammy Award winner Glen Ballard is one of popular music’s most accomplished producers and songwriters, whose records have sold more than 150 million copies worldwide. Ballard’s production company Augury is currently developing original, music-driven content for television, film, and stage. During his diverse career, Ballard has worked with the biggest names in music, from Barbra Streisand and Aerosmith to Dave Matthews and Katy Perry. He produced and co-wrote Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill (33 million worldwide, four Grammys, and named Best Album of the Decade by Billboard Magazine), wrote and arranged “Man in the Mirror” for Michael Jackson, and co-wrote and produced the Grammy-winning and Oscarnominated song “Believe” (Josh Groban) for the feature film The Polar Express. He has written and produced songs for Quincy Jones, Aretha Franklin, Shakira, Idina Menzel, George Benson, George Straight, Wilson Phillips, Van Halen, Chaka Khan, Patti Austin, Al Jarreau, Andrea Bocelli, and many others. His production credits include producing and arranging records for Annie Lennox, No Doubt, and POD. His work in film includes composing original songs for Charlotte’s Web, Beowulf, A Christmas Carol, The Croods, The Mummy Returns, and Valentine’s Day. Ballard also wrote the lyrics and music for Ghost the Musical, which was based on the Academy Award-winning film Ghost starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. After a successful run on the West End and Broadway, Ghost the Musical is currently touring worldwide.

The American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) at Harvard University is a leading force in the American theater, producing groundbreaking work in Cambridge and beyond. The A.R.T. was founded in 1980 by Robert Brustein, who served as Artistic Director until 2002, when he was succeeded by Robert Woodruff. Diane Paulus began her tenure as Artistic Director in 2008. Under the leadership of Paulus and Executive Producer Diane Borger, the A.R.T. seeks to expand the boundaries of theater by programming events that immerse audiences in transformative theatrical experiences. Throughout its history, the A.R.T. has been honored with many distinguished awards, including the Tony Award for Best New Play for All the Way (2014); consecutive Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Musical for Pippin (2013) and The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess (2012), both of which Paulus directed; a Pulitzer Prize; a Jujamcyn Prize for outstanding contribution to the development of creative talent; the Regional Theater Tony Award; and numerous Elliot Norton and IRNE Awards. The A.R.T. collaborates with artists around the world to develop and create work in new ways. It is currently engaged in a number of multi-year projects, including a collaboration with Harvard’s Center for the Environment that will result in the development of new work over several years. Under Paulus’s leadership, the A.R.T.’s club theater, OBERON, has been an incubator for local and emerging artists and has attracted national attention for its innovative programming and business models. As the professional theater on the campus of Harvard University, the A.R.T. catalyzes discourse, interdisciplinary collaboration, and creative exchange among a wide range of academic departments, institutions, students, and faculty members, acting as a conduit between its community of artists and the university. The A.R.T. Institute for Advanced Theater Training, which is run in partnership with the Moscow Art Theatre School, offers graduate training in acting, dramaturgy, and voice. The A.R.T. also plays a central role in Harvard’s undergraduate Theater, Dance & Media concentration. Dedicated to making great theater accessible, the A.R.T. actively engages more than 5,000 community members and local students annually in project-based partnerships, workshops, conversations with artists, and other enrichment activities both at the theater and across the Greater Boston area. Through all of these initiatives, the A.R.T. is dedicated to producing world-class performances in which the audience is central to the theatrical experience.

Education Experience A.R.T. Education Experiences spark meaningful discourse, in and out of school. In addition to fostering creativity, collaboration, and intellectual curiosity in our community, we support teachers with free arts-integrated teaching tools and affordable tickets to world-class theater at the A.R.T. Community Connections A.R.T. partners with Boston-area non-profit organizations, bringing high-quality arts experiences to underserved families and individuals. Community Connections pairs affordable tickets to A.R.T. performances with enrichment programming ranging from private artist talks to in-depth workshops.

A.R.T. Kids Company Children ages 5–10 join us on Saturday mornings in the fall and spring to learn the fundamentals of theater by re-imagining classic and contemporary tales, live! Summer 2017 also marked the launch of A.R.T. Kids Company Jamboree, a week-long, half-day program integrating storytelling with STEM learning. Proclamation An ensemble of local high school juniors and seniors team up with A.R.T. artists and Harvard scholars for an eight-week afterschool playmaking intensive. The result is a vivid, provocative, and fresh production devised and performed by the ensemble. Last fall, the ensemble explored themes of seeking, using, and creating truth in Proclamation 5: True That!. To learn more about A.R.T.
