2017/18 Season
Artistic Director’s Welcome @americanrep #BedlamSense
WELCOME TO BEDLAM'S SENSE & SENSIBILITY This holiday season, it is a pleasure to gather around stories—especially ones with strong female leads—to celebrate imagination and compassion. Jane Austen’s novel was adapted for this production by Kate Hamill. In recent adaptations including Sense & Sensibility, as well as Vanity Fair and Pride and Prejudice, Kate continues to demonstrate an exceptional talent for bringing classic literature to new, contemporary life onstage. This production is directed by Eric Tucker, the Artistic Director of Bedlam. This up-and-coming theater company burst onto the Boston theater scene with Saint Joan, presented at Central Square Theater in 2015. Since then, Bedlam has brought an exuberant, kinetic theatricality to texts including including Peter Pan, Twelfth Night, The Seagull, and Hamlet (returning to Boston in repertory with Saint Joan at ArtsEmerson in March 2018).
Original Artwork: ABM/Amanda Bohan, Micah Logdon.
Both Kate and Eric make their A.R.T. debuts with this production. With constant motion and an irresistible sense of play, these artists have found a physical form for Austen’s signature combination of energy, cleverness, and compassion. In the process, they have created a woman-centered classic for our own time. Thank you for joining us.

A.R.T.’S SEASON DRAWS INSPIRATION FROM POP ART TO A LANDMARK ALT-ROCK ALBUM, FROM POETRY TO CLASSIC LITERATURE Run AMOC! Festival
The White Card
The festival features a collaboration between an internationally acclaimed dancer and award-winning violinist; duets staged as duels between three pairs of performers; and a musical meditation on the lives of black men and women lost as a result of police brutality over the past year. These newly developed pieces by American Modern Opera Company (AMOC) artists will be performed at venues around Harvard Square.
At a dinner party thrown by an influential Manhattan couple for an up-and-coming artist, questions arise about what—and who—is actually on display. This world-premiere play poses the question, “Can American society progress if whiteness stays invisible?”

A Note from Playwright Kate Hamill Quite often, I get asked: “What made you adapt Sense & Sensibility?” The truth is: an odd combination of love and frustration. I love the theater. The theater, specifically; unlike film, it’s ephemeral— changing from night to night, from show to show. A group of people gather in a room together and enact an old, old ritual: the audience and actors, all feeling and breathing together. I love the theater for its potential—for the empathy it can awaken. Nothing makes me feel more connected to others than when I experience a truly amazing play or musical, whether from onstage or off: when I find myself laughing and crying openly for the lives of imaginary human beings. Nothing cures me of loneliness like seeing the secrets of others’ hearts onstage. And I love the classics: both theatrical and literary. I love stories that are so powerful they’ve stayed with us for centuries. My love for Jane Austen’s writing began when I was a teenager in a small town in rural America. Reading the novels of a woman who had died centuries before I was born, I recognized the eccentricities of my own neighbors. I read about people just like me, who struggled to reconcile their consciences with the dictates of society. And I felt a strong sense of kinship with Jane Austen—an intense love for her work that’s gone on to shape my life… the frustration came a bit later. I grew up and moved out of that small town, and started working as an actor in New York City. Quickly, I became frustrated by the dearth of complex, female-centered characters and storylines in the theater. And it wasn’t just me: I had so many friends— talented, trained, passionate female artists—who were dropping out of the business for lack of opportunity. For millennia, women working in the theater were largely relegated to playing tertiary characters in male

narratives: the girlfriend, the wife, the prostitute. This is particularly true, of course, in my beloved classics: there are three female roles for every sixteen male roles in Shakespeare, for example. Now, there are some great roles for girlfriends, wives, prostitutes, but I was tired of women losing the chance to lead the stories (and thus losing out on career opportunities). I wanted to create women-centered narratives. I wanted to create new female classics. And then I thought, where better to start than with Jane Austen: also a young woman, and one with whom I had felt a long-standing connection? I started writing. The play born of that love and frustration—Sense & Sensibility—has gone on to productions in theaters nationwide, employing dozens of women and men in a female-centered storyline. I think its popularity is a testament to how many people—like me—are hungering for female-centered stories. I’m very proud to have Sense & Sensibility at A.R.T., directed by Eric Tucker, who directed the world premiere and several ensuing productions, all of which bear Bedlam’s invariably inventive and exciting style. The theater offers powerful opportunities for connection: with our past, with others, with ourselves. I adapted Sense & Sensibility because I believe so deeply that the classics belong to everyone. When we ensure that narratives of all types can take center stage, we know that we can all be protagonists, no matter our gender or background or circumstance: heroes—or heroines—of our own stories.
Kate Hamill is the playwright of Bedlam's Sense & Sensibility (in which she originated the role of Marianne). Her other adaptations include Vanity Fair, Pride and Prejudice, and Little Women (forthcoming). This article originally appeared in the A.R.T. Guide, available in the theater lobby and online. 9

A Note from Director Eric Tucker
Photo: David Noles.
Jane Austen would have loved Facebook. She would have spent endless hours tweeting her friends all about Edward Ferrars’ newest waistcoat. She’d have instagrammed and snapchatted her way through London society. She’d have thoroughly enjoyed watching Mr. Darcy on “The Bachelor” with a bevy of eligible, young creatures swarming and swooning around him each week. When commenting on Jane as a teenager, one of her neighbors called her: “the prettiest, silliest, most affected, husband-hunting butterfly” she ever remembered. Although she was liberal with her relationship advice, Jane herself never married. She did, however, write some of the most memorable and enduring love stories the world has ever known. As in Shakespeare, Austen’s characters are three-dimensional, fully formed, magnificent (however flawed) human beings. Austen’s stories resonate with us today because not all that much has really changed about people. We love gossip and intrigue and celebrity. We fall in love with people we can’t have and people we shouldn’t have and people our parents hate. We find love and lose love and talk about love and dream about love and obsess about love. Some of us have happy endings, and some of us don’t. People get married and have babies and spend their lives together after falling in love, and sometimes love has nothing to do with it. So we’re telling this story not because Jane Austen would have been a ferocious tweeter (if I loved you less I might be able to talk about it more), but because Jane Austen was writing about all of us for all time. Because she’s insightful and funny and deliciously witty and edgier than we remember, and because she wrote one of the best endings a story has ever had since Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. I think that if Jane Austen had written plays, they’d sound like this one. And if she were alive, we’d totally be Facebook friends.
Eric Tucker is the Artistic Director of Bedlam and the Director of Bedlam's Sense & Sensibility. He was named the Wall Street Journal Director of the Year in 2014. Recent productions include Bedlam's Peter Pan, Vanity Fair, Women of Will, and Hamlet & Saint Joan (playing at ArtsEmerson in March 2018).

FOUNDING DIRECTOR
The American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) at Harvard University is a leading force in the American theater, producing groundbreaking work in Cambridge and beyond. The A.R.T. was founded in 1980 by Robert Brustein, who served as Artistic Director until 2002, when he was succeeded by Robert Woodruff. Diane Paulus began her tenure as Artistic Director in 2008. Under the leadership of Paulus and Executive Producer Diane Borger, the A.R.T. seeks to expand the boundaries of theater by programming events that immerse audiences in transformative theatrical experiences. Throughout its history, the A.R.T. has been honored with many distinguished awards, including the Tony Award for Best New Play for All the Way (2014); consecutive Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Musical for Pippin (2013) and The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess (2012), both of which Paulus directed; a Pulitzer Prize; a Jujamcyn Prize for outstanding contribution to the development of creative talent; the Regional Theater Tony Award; and numerous Elliot Norton and IRNE Awards. The A.R.T. collaborates with artists around the world to develop and create work in new ways. It is currently engaged in a number of multi-year projects, including a new collaboration with Harvard's Center for the Environment that will result in the development of new work over several years. Under Paulus’s leadership, the A.R.T.’s club theater, OBERON, has been an incubator for local and emerging artists and has attracted national attention for its innovative programming and business models. As the professional theater on the campus of Harvard University, the A.R.T. catalyzes discourse, interdisciplinary collaboration, and creative exchange among a wide range of academic departments, institutions, students, and faculty members, acting as a conduit between its community of artists and the university. The A.R.T. Institute for Advanced Theater Training, which is run in partnership with the Moscow Art Theatre School, offers graduate training in acting, dramaturgy, and voice. The A.R.T. also plays a central role in Harvard's undergraduate Theater, Dance, and Media concentration. Dedicated to making great theater accessible, the A.R.T. actively engages more than 5,000 community members and local students annually in project-based partnerships, workshops, conversations with artists, and other enrichment activities both at the theater and across the Greater Boston area. Through all of these initiatives, the A.R.T. is dedicated to producing world-class performances in which the audience is central to the theatrical experience.

A.R.T. Kids Company Children ages 5–10 join us on Saturday mornings in the fall and spring to learn the fundamentals of theater by re-imagining classic and contemporary tales, live! Summer 2017 also marked the launch of the first-ever A.R.T. Kids Company Jamboree, a week-long, half-day program integrating storytelling with STEM learning. Proclamation An ensemble of local high school juniors and seniors team up with A.R.T. artists and Harvard scholars for an eight-week afterschool playmaking intensive. The result is a vivid, provocative, and fresh performance work. This fall, the ensemble explored themes of seeking, using, and creating truth in Proclamation 5: True That!. To learn more about A.R.T. *This Season, the A.R.T. fondly remembers Alice Austin, who recently passed away unexpectedly. Alice provided description for blind and low-visioned patrons of numerous productions at A.R.T. and around the Greater Boston area. Since first working with A.R.T. on The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess (2011), Alice guided the theater in the creation and curation of audio-described performances as well as advocating nationally for access to the arts.
