Artistic Director's Welcome DIANE PAULUS The Terrie and Bradley Bloom Artistic Director American Repertory Theater
WELCOME TO ARRABAL! This production has traveled a long way to arrive in Cambridge—created in Buenos Aires at La Catedral tango club, and later developed in Toronto and Bogotá, Arrabal now makes its US premiere at the A.R.T. I first worked with Tony-nominated choreographer Sergio Trujillo on the Public Theater’s concert staging of The Capeman in 2010, and then collaborated with him on Invisible Thread (formerly Witness Uganda). Sergio’s dynamic and versatile choreography has been seen on Broadway for years, including the long-running hit Jersey Boys. Sergio—a Colombian-Canadian-American artist whose work is constantly crossing borders—now turns his attention to an Argentinian story. Arrabal marks a thrilling partnership between Sergio and legendary Argentinian musician and composer Gustavo Santaolalla. Gustavo’s work spans genres: his scores for the movies Babel and Brokeback Mountain have been honored with Academy Awards, while his band Bajofondo has brought its trademark fusion of tango and rock to audiences around the world. In this production, music propels us through a story about a nation coming to terms with its past in order to move forward. Completing the team are Tony-nominated bookwriter John Weidman (Pacific Overtures, Contact, Assassins) and veteran Argentine choreographer Julio Zurita.

The show’s designers are well-known to A.R.T. audiences: Arrabal marks scenic designer Riccardo Hernandez’s twentieth production here (including, most recently, Notes from the Field). Also returning are Clint Ramos (costumes, Endgame, Donnie Darko, The Onion Cellar) and Peter Nigrini (projection, Witness Uganda). Lighting designer Vincent Colbert and sound designer Peter McBoyle are both making their A.R.T. debuts. Arrabal continues the A.R.T.’s interest in transforming theatrical spaces in order to create immersive experiences. Inspired by the milongas of Buenos Aires, this production turns the Loeb Drama Center into a tango club, blurring the boundaries between audience and performers. We are delighted to celebrate the completion of our 2016/17 Season with Arrabal!

On March 24, 1976, the democratically elected government of Argentina was overthrown by a brutal military dictatorship led by General Jorge Rafael Videla. Responding to a period of intense social and political unrest, Videla’s announced goal was the rehabilitation of "el ser nacional"—the restoration of “the collective soul and essence of the nation.” The method he announced for achieving this goal was the blandly named “Process for National Reorganization.” When it was put into effect this “process” proved to be anything but bland. Between 1976 and 1983, when the military junta—discredited and humiliated by Argentina’s loss to the British in the Falklands War—was forced to step down, Videla’s dictatorship systematically kidnapped, tortured, and, in most cases, murdered as many as 30,000 Argentines—young men and women “disappeared” by a regime which claimed to have no knowledge of who had abducted them or where they had gone. The Argentinian experience of this national calamity captured my imagination. I wanted to create a passionate, compelling theater piece which would evoke, explore, and above all honor what the people of Argentina had endured, and continue to endure, as a result of this brutal and tumultuous period in their history. And I had a bit of luck. For years I had known and admired a brilliant Argentine musician and composer named Gustavo Santaolalla. Gustavo’s band, Bajofondo, produces a unique tango rock fusion sound which I had known and loved since I first heard it. Music which I had always experienced as inherently and highly theatrical. 8

A Note from Director Sergio Trujillo
The story of Arrabal begins in 1976, the year that a rightwing junta led by General Jorge Rafael Videla overthrew Argentine president Isabel Perón. In the systematic repression that followed, over 30,000 people were "disappeared"—secretly abducted, imprisoned, and, in a majority of cases, killed.
And, I was told, Gustavo was eager to use his music to tell a story onstage. I headed for Buenos Aires, a city I had never visited. Gustavo and I met and began what became a productive and exhilarating collaboration which blossomed into a profound and meaningful friendship. While I visited Buenos Aires—the Paris of South America—I immersed myself in its culture, its music, and its dance, all of which reinforced my instinct that, if we were going to create a show about Argentina, we needed to create it in Argentina, with Argentine artists. Artists like the extraordinary choreographer, Julio Zurita, a choreographer whose unique dance vocabulary pays homage to the conventions of that signature Argentine dance form, the tango, without being enslaved by it. I wanted to collaborate with another choreographer who could help me re-imagine Bajofondo’s music and Arrabal into a theatrical and storytelling experience.
The next task was to find a playwright/librettist who understood the way in which dance and movement can be used to tell a story—a complex story with personal and political dimensions which reinforce and enhance each other, all of it with little or no language. For this, I reached back to New York, to John Weidman, who had contributed the libretto to the Tony Award-winning dance show Contact. The possibilities of the story, the power of the politics, and the sheer exhilaration of the music and the movement intrigued him. The basic team was complete. Now back to Buenos Aires, where we would actually create the show. The cast would be Argentines. Actors, dancers, and musicians who understood our story, because it wasn’t so much our story as it was their story. Actors, dancers, and musicians, all of whom had some personal, emotional connection to the experience of the Desaparecidos, the men and women who were “disappeared” during the Junta regime. 10

We auditioned hundreds of dancers and musicians, looking not only for dancers who were actors, but for dancer/actors who would be fearless in their approach to the story and who would not be afraid to step away from the traditional aesthetic of the tango. After a long, uncompromising audition process we found what we believe are some of the best, most exciting dancers in the world. And the musicians. Bajofondo’s music is edgy, exciting, and fearless. To deliver it onstage in Arrabal—to create the Orquestra Bajofondo—we looked for, and found, some of the most virtuosic, compelling players in all of Argentina. Finally, we workshopped Arrabal, not in a rehearsal room like most shows, but in La Catedral, an ancient warehouse that was converted into a tango bar decorated with an eclectic collection of found objects including an enormous, semi-inflated heart which hangs over the dance floor. The feeling of this unique space inspired me to create without boundaries and to pour a raw sensuality into the story. I wanted the audience to be transported—to Argentina, to its milongas, to its tumultuous history, and to the unique beauty of its passionate culture. I have spent the majority of the past decade working on Broadway shows with American themes, shows like Jersey Boys, Memphis, Next To Normal and Invisible Thread. Arrabal has provided me, as a Latino, with an opportunity to create a show which expanded those themes to embrace essential aspects of my heritage, of who I am—a hugely satisfying and gratifying experience. Welcome to Arrabal.
Shows como Jersey Boys, Memphis, Next To Normal, and Invisible Thread. Bienvenidos a Arrabal.

BAJOFONDO Music Bajofondo was conceived in 2002 when Gustavo Santaolalla and Juan Campodónico had the idea of bringing together a collective of Argentine and Uruguayan artists dedicated to creating “contemporary music of the Río de la Plata,” the river that separates—and unites—Argentina and Uruguay. Although Bajofondo is credited with pioneering the style of music known as “electrotango,” seven albums and 10 years of multiple tours later, this collective of artists has evolved into a band that creates a stirring mix of tango, milonga, rock, hip hop, electronica, jazz, and classical that converge into their truly hard-to-describe unique sound and style. Bajofondo has toured all over the world, performing at the biggest and most diverse music festivals and venues in the world: Coachella and Lincoln Center in the US; Roskilde in Denmark; WOMAD, the Barbican Centre, and the Roundhouse

FOUNDING DIRECTOR Robert Brustein
The American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) at Harvard University is a leading force in the American theater, producing groundbreaking work in Cambridge and beyond. The A.R.T. was founded in 1980 by Robert Brustein, who served as Artistic Director until 2002, when he was succeeded by Robert Woodruff. Diane Paulus began her tenure as Artistic Director in 2008. Under the leadership of Paulus and Executive Director Diane Quinn, the A.R.T. seeks to expand the boundaries of theater by programming events that immerse audiences in transformative theatrical experiences. Throughout its history, the A.R.T. has been honored with many distinguished awards, including the Tony Award for Best New Play for All the Way (2014); consecutive Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Musical for Pippin (2013) and The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess (2012), both of which Paulus directed; a Pulitzer Prize; a Jujamcyn Prize for outstanding contribution to the development of creative talent; the Regional Theater Tony Award; and numerous Elliot Norton and IRNE Awards. The A.R.T. collaborates with artists around the world to develop and create work in new ways. It is currently engaged in a number of multi-year projects, including a new collaboration with Harvard's Center for the Environment that will result in the development of new work over several years. Under Paulus’s leadership, the A.R.T.’s club theater, OBERON, has been an incubator for local and emerging artists and has attracted national attention for its innovative programming and business models. As the professional theater on the campus of Harvard University, the A.R.T. catalyzes discourse, interdisciplinary collaboration, and creative exchange among a wide range of academic departments, institutions, students, and faculty members, acting as a conduit between its community of artists and the university. The A.R.T. plays a central role in Harvard's newly launched undergraduate Theater, Dance, and Media concentration, teaching courses in directing, dramatic literature, acting, voice, design, and dramaturgy. The A.R.T. Institute for Advanced Theater Training, which is run in partnership with the Moscow Art Theatre School, offers graduate training in acting, dramaturgy, and voice. Dedicated to making great theater accessible, the A.R.T. actively engages more than 5,000 community members and local students annually in project-based partnerships, workshops, conversations with artists, and other enrichment activities both at the theater and across the Greater Boston area. Through all of these initiatives, the A.R.T. is dedicated to producing world-class performances in which the audience is central to the theatrical experience.

A.R.T. Kids Company Children ages 5–10 join us on Saturday mornings in the fall and spring to learn the fundamentals of theater by creating re-imaginings of classic and contemporary tales, live! Proclamation An ensemble of local high school juniors and seniors team up with A.R.T. artists and Harvard scholars for an eight-week afterschool play-making intensive. The result is a vivid, provocative, and fresh performance work. This season, Proclamation 4: Borders/Boundaries explored the visible and invisible borders we encounter on a daily basis, performed at OBERON and the ICA Boston. To learn more about A.R.T.
