Artistic Director's Welcome DIANE PAULUS The Terrie and Bradley Bloom Artistic Director American Repertory Theater

Welcome to In the Body of the World! It is not an exaggeration to say that Eve Ensler has been a source of inspiration to over a billion people. She has fearlessly tackled the most challenging issues of our time and motivated people into action worldwide. This season, Eve returns to the A.R.T. to again explore bold and critical questions with our audiences as she did with her play O.P.C. last season. Many of us know Eve through The Vagina Monologues, her landmark play that led to the launch of V-Day, a global not-for-profit movement which has raised over one hundred million dollars for groups working to end violence against women. In 2012, Eve launched the One Billion Rising campaign, calling on women and men in over 200 countries to come together to demand an end to violence against women and girls. When I first read In The Body of the World, I immediately knew it could be a powerful piece of theater. Eager to provide Eve with the developmental support of an artistic home, the A.R.T. commissioned this dramatic adaptation of her memoir, which features Eve as performer. In the Body of the World welcomes back to the A.R.T. projection designer Finn Ross (Crossing) and movement director Jill Johnson, Director of Dance at Harvard University (O.P.C., Crossing). Set and costume designer Myung Hee Cho, my longtime collaborator, makes her A.R.T. debut along with lighting designer Jen Schriever. One of my goals as Artistic Director at A.R.T. has been to extend theatrical experiences beyond the stage. In this spirit, we invite you to participate in "Act II," a conversation that will take place after every performance and feature a roster of guests including doctors, activists, and scholars from Harvard, the Mayo Clinic, V-Day, and other organizations. Thank you for joining us to experience this story of healing, transformation, and love.

TURNING PAIN TO POWER by Christine Schuler Deschryver, Director of City of Joy and V-Day Congo

BUKAVU, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO—Millions people have died in the conflict here, hundreds of thousands of women have been raped and violated, where we were invaded by almost all the surrounding countries, who steal our natural resources. Our country is scarred by a brutal history of colonialism, our land and our resources repeatedly pillaged, from rubber to minerals, extracted by foreigners in the name of a colonial crown and flag, or more recently a corporate logo, all culminating in a decades-long war that has been suffered by the Congolese people, most brutally by her women. Since 1996, sexual and gender violence in the Eastern DRC has been used to torture and humiliate women and girls and destroy families. Advocates on the ground estimate that over half a million women and girls have been raped since the conflict began. In addition to the severe psychological impact, sexual and gender violence leaves many survivors with genital lesions, traumatic fistulae, severed and broken limbs, unwanted pregnancies, and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV. What the human brain can understand is stories. I am thrilled that Eve Ensler’s In The Body of The World has come to A.R.T., as the stories of women in the Congo play a key role within her memoir. And Eve has played a key role in our work in the Congo. I live and work in Bukavu, the epicenter of some of the worst sexual violence in the world. In 2005, a woman patient was brought to us who seemed like many women we see: she had been brought to the edge of physical destruction by multiple extremely violent rapes by militiamen. Her name, Jane Mukuninwa. To give her even a chance at survival, she needed nine separate surgeries and will probably need more. The women who were operated on, if they survived, would face enormous barriers to justice and often there was nowhere for them to go. Survivors usually suffer in silence, fearing stigma, rejection, and ostracism if their ordeal is made public and are often thrown out or shunned by their communities, their families. Jane lived. But it was not much of a life. Then, in 2007, Dr. Denis Mukwege, the founder of the Panzi Hospital in Bukavu who has been twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, met Eve in New York and invited her to come to Congo, so that she could see what women were experiencing here, and what he was facing as a doctor, in his daily strife to repair and heal them after the brutal rapes that were taking place. He wanted her to help us take our stories and plight to the world, so that people could understand what Congolese women were undergoing, in the hope to join efforts to stop the violence. He introduced Eve to me, and we spent weeks on her first visit talking to women, listening to their stories and bonding with each other. To be candid, we get a lot of foreign visitors, who come to have their picture taken and to shed some tears, and then leave. So I didn’t expect much. But Eve did something nobody had done before. She asked Jane, and the other women, "What help do you need?" The women explained that they would like to build a safe space for the women who have had everything taken from them to rebuild their confidence, their sense of self, and their sense of joy—and for those women, once they had recovered, to go back to their communities, and to lead them. 8

"It can be hard to explain to people in the outside world what has happened here in our country, the Democratic Republic of Congo—except for in one way. The only way."

(L-R) Christine Schuler Deschryver, Jane Mukuninwa, and Eve Ensler at City of Joy in Bukavu, DRC

The women whispered dreams like this. Their bodies were leaking from the rapes; they would apologize with shame. Many people would have laughed at this very idea that these women could ever speak to their families again, never mind become leaders. Eve did not. She told them that she would return, with financial support so the women themselves could build City of Joy, a place where they could turn pain to power. By 2011, it was built in full. Jane was part of the first class there and has since become one of its leaders. There, the women begin to choose their own path in life—to explore their feelings and fears and dreams. At Panzi Hospital, Dr. Mukwege and his team can reconstruct them physically; but in City of Joy, they reconstruct themselves emotionally and become political agents of their own lives. It welcomes, twice a year, 90 survivors of gender violence. They stay for six months, over which they undergo intense therapies, holistic recovery and healing. They are taught about leadership, their rights, and other empowerment programs. I have watched as women who were as broken as a human being can be— emotionally and physically disemboweled—learn to live and love again. I have watched women I did not think could bear to take another breath dance again. And—even more incredibly—I have seen that Jane’s seemingly impossible ambition has come to pass: women are now returning to their communities as leaders. They have become the strongest points of their community, spreading the City of Joy revolution across the whole of eastern Congo. In her memoir, In The Body of The World, Eve tells the story of how she has been tutored, inspired, and changed by the women we know so well. It is not the story of a rape. It is the story of a rising—of women who, in the most horrific of circumstances, are achieving the most incredible things. And Eve tells of how, when she then faced a life-threatening crisis of her own, it was the strength of the women of the Congo, and what they taught her, that helped her to survive. At City of Joy, we have developed a unique strength. We believe it is a strength that has something to teach all human beings—about how to live, and love, and dream. In The Body of The World carries that spirit across the ocean to A.R.T. I invite you to learn more about the rising revolution that is taking place at City of Joy. Visit drc.vday.org. This article was originally published in the A.R.T. Guide, available in the theater lobby and online.

THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO: From Colonization to the Present

Prepared by A.R.T. Institute Production Dramaturg Aida Rocci 1885-1908: King Leopold II of Belgium privately purchases the rights to the territory of Congo, inhabited by Bantu tribes. He names it Congo Free State. Leopoldville is established as the capital. The exploitation of rubber and ivory makes Leopold a fortune. Disease and brutalization under Leopold’s rule reduce the population by half. 1908: Amidst international protests over killings, the Belgian Parliament annexes Congo Free State and turns it into a Belgian colony, renaming it Belgian Congo. The plundering of natural resources continues. 1960: Congo gains its independence and is renamed Republic of the Congo. Patrice Lumumba is democratically elected as prime minister. Twelve weeks afterwards, a secessionist movement sets off the Congo Crisis, a civil war that lasts 5 years. 1965: Joseph-Désiré Mobutu, supported by the United States and Belgium as an opponent to communism, leads a successful a coup d’état on November 25. Lumumba is imprisoned and executed. Mobutu’s 30-year rule is characterized by corruption, a 65% decrease in GDP, political repression, and human rights violations. He dominates the political life of the country, restructuring the state on more than one occasion, and claiming the title of "Father of the Nation." 1971: Mobutu renames the country Zaire and the capital Kinshasa. Under the authenticity policy of the early 1970s, Zairians are obliged to adopt "authentic" names. Mobutu changes his name to Mobutu Sese Seko Kuku Ngbendu Wa Za Banga, or, more commonly, Mobutu Sese Seko, roughly meaning "the all-conquering warrior, who goes from triumph to triumph." 1996-1997: The First Congo War is precipitated by the Rwandan genocide spilling over into Zaire. It ends when Laurent-Désiré Kabila, supported by Rwanda and Uganda, takes control of Zaire. The country is renamed Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This marks the beginning of the Congolese Civil Wars (also called the African World War), a conflict that has lasted 20 years. 1998: Rebel attempts to overthrow Kabila set off the Second Congo War. It soon becomes an international conflict involving Rwanda, Uganda, Angola, Namibia, Chad, Sudan and Zimbabwe. 2001: Kabila is assassinated. His son, Joseph Kabila, succeeds him. A UN panel reports the warring parties are deliberately prolonging the conflict to plunder gold, diamonds, tin, copper and coltan. The profits from the illegal mining and sale of these minerals finance fighting. Control over lucrative mines becomes a military objective. For more reading, go to kemet.com/ConflictFreeBrochure. 2003: The Second Congo War ends when the Transitional Government of the DRC takes power. 2004: The Kivu Conflict begins. Rebel militia groups appear and terrorize the eastern part of the country. 2009: Death rates escalate to 45,000 per month. Systematic, brutal rape becomes a war tactic to control natural resources by driving miners out of the regions. Amnesty International reports: “rape is cheaper than bullets.” DRC becomes “the rape capital of the world.” 2015: Kabila attempts to pass a reform that would allow him to remain in power indefinitely. After protests, the Senate omits this controversial allowance from the reform. At present: Millions of people have died as a result of the ongoing conflict. The UN has estimated that 7.5 million people in DRC are in need of food and other humanitarian aid. A total of 3 million people have been displaced. It is estimated that half a million women and girls have been raped. Elections are expected to take place in November 2016, 10 although the international community fears a delay.

The A.R.T. was founded in 1980 by Robert Brustein, who served as Artistic Director until 2002, when he was succeeded by Robert Woodruff. Diane Paulus began her tenure as Artistic Director in 2008. Under the leadership of Paulus and Executive Director Diane Quinn, the A.R.T. seeks to expand the boundaries of theater by programming events that immerse audiences in transformative theatrical experiences. Throughout its history, the A.R.T. has been honored with many distinguished awards, including the Tony Award for Best New Play for All the Way (2014); consecutive Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Musical for Pippin (2013) and The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess (2012), both of which Paulus directed; a Pulitzer Prize; a Jujamcyn Prize for outstanding contribution to the development of creative talent; the Tony Award for Best Regional Theater; and numerous Elliot Norton and IRNE Awards. The A.R.T. collaborates with artists around the world to develop and create work in new ways. It is currently engaged in a number of multi-year projects, including a new collaboration with Harvard's Center for the Environment that will result in the development of new work over several years. Under Paulus’s leadership, the A.R.T.’s club theater, OBERON, has been an incubator for local and emerging artists and has attracted national attention for its innovative programming and business models. As the professional theater on the campus of Harvard University, the A.R.T. catalyzes discourse, interdisciplinary collaboration, and creative exchange among a wide range of academic departments, institutions, students, and faculty members, acting as a conduit between its community of artists and the university. A.R.T. plays a central role in Harvard's newly launched undergraduate Theater, Dance, and Media concentration, teaching courses in directing, dramatic literature, acting, voice, design, and dramaturgy. The A.R.T. Institute for Advanced Theater Training, which is run in partnership with the Harvard Extension School and the Moscow Art Theatre School, offers graduate training in acting, dramaturgy, and voice. Dedicated to making great theater accessible, the A.R.T. actively engages more than 5,000 community members and local students annually in project-based partnerships, workshops, conversations with artists, and other enrichment activities both at the theater and across the Greater Boston area. Through all of these initiatives, the A.R.T. is dedicated to producing world-class performances in which the audience is central to the theatrical experience.
