Welcome to the American Repertory Theater! I am delighted you have joined us for the world premiere of Finding Neverland, a new musical inspired by the story of how J. M. Barrie created his beloved classic, Peter Pan. When it premiered in 1904, Peter Pan was a daring theatrical experiment with flying children, pirates, mermaids, and a dog who was the children’s nanny. Barrie stretched the boundaries of what theater could be — and it is that artistic risk-taking that inspires me. The making of a new musical requires intense collaboration, and the creative team of Finding Neverland has worked together tirelessly to bring this show to life. I am thrilled that the composing team of Gary Barlow and Eliot Kennedy, who come from the world of British pop music, have brought their talents to the musical theater, along with British playwright, James Graham, who is our book writer. I have admired Mia Michaels’s work as a choreographer for years and it has been a dream come true to work with her on this project. Along with an extraordinary cast and design team, this family of artists has wholeheartedly dedicated itself to the creative process. Finding Neverland invites us to see the world through the eyes of a child. I have two daughters who are seven and ten, and in many ways, I am creating this musical for them. As both the director of this production and the Artistic Director of the A.R.T., I hope that you, your families, and your friends enjoy this theatrical flight into the imagination, which shows how the power of creativity can take us places we never dreamed were possible.

A Note from Writer James Graham It didn’t take a huge leap of my imagination to associate with a British playwright who escapes reality by living inside his head — a writer who resisted for as long as possible the inevitabilities of growing up and growing old. From a young age I’d always found solace and excitement in the picking up of a pen, and dreaming that anything was possible… That’s the genius and the magic of Peter Pan. It reminds us all, amid the day-to-day stresses and strains of adult life that, once upon a time, we were all children who didn’t care about money or career — we cared only about silliness and play. I remember learning early on, as I arrived in London theatreland with my own ideas of being a playwright, that the term itself doesn’t actually mean “writer of plays” but instead “maker of play.” That was the biggest appeal to me of Finding Neverland. This past decade I’ve enjoyed making big, grown-up pieces at places like the National Theatre and the Donmar Warehouse about politics and power. This show felt like the writing equivalent of tossing my homework away and going outside to play. It’s easy to forget that Peter Pan was incredibly radical when first staged at the Duke of York’s in 1904 — a post-Victorian society of strict manners, etiquette and social structure. Barrie’s anarchic vision was to present an alternative fantasy world where things were reversed — where children gained power over adults, play was more important than work, and make-believe took precedent over reality. Serious theatregoers weren’t used to seeing a roll call of fairies and dogs and pirates in the program of a respected playhouse. Rumours were so rife around town about the bizarre new show J. M. Barrie was creating that journalists tried to break into rehearsals. The actors only received the script pages of scenes they were in. The beleaguered stage management team had to invent pulley systems and stage machinery the likes of which had never been seen before. Our director Diane Paulus was keen from the start to reflect that spirit of creative freedom and radicalism here in 2014. Despite its period setting, we juxtapose within it the deliberately modern British pop music of Gary Barlow and Eliot Kennedy, and the liberatingly contemporary choreography of Mia Michaels. This is what the world looks and sounds like to Barrie. For my part, I wanted to revel in a distinct “cheekiness” — which I’ve since discovered is a uniquely British type of humor. To be cheeky is to charmingly undermine the status quo — something we’re naturally adept at as kids, but chicken out of as adults. Finding Neverland asks all the grown-ups to get back in touch with their naughty selves, leaving their serious and sensible sides at the door. I felt a huge responsibility in being passed this baton from previous writers. After all, this musical is an adaptation of a popular film written by David Magee, which in itself is based on a play by Allan Knee. He, of course, was inspired by the events of real life in which J. M. Barrie and the boys Davies created a play that was itself inspired by their own adventure stories of boys playing in Kensington Gardens. Again and again and again these stories, and these characters, have inspired artists and audiences alike. For me, it will always be about the power of storytelling to break rules, mend hearts, and make sense of the world. Corny as it may sound, I’ve never believed we go to the theatre to lose ourselves. We go to find ourselves. We’re all just Lost Boys, really. Waiting to be found.

A Conversation with Mia Michaels Finding Neverland Dramaturg Christian Ronald sits down with Choreographer Mia Michaels Christian Ronald: How did you first get started in dance? Mia Michaels: I was born into a dance family. My father was my first dance teacher, and I was literally born and raised in a dance studio, where I was crawling as a baby in diapers, swinging my bottle to the music. That’s all I knew – school and dance, school and dance. CR: How did you make the transition into musical theater? MM: I started first with my company, R.A.W., in New York City. I thought I was going to really go in the concert dance direction – that was where my main focus was. Madonna was the first one who pulled me out of the concert dance world and brought me into the commercial world. From there, I went on to do Céline Dion’s A New Day. In the commercial world, I found that by having my own company where I explored my own movement, I never conformed to anything other than myself and what I instinctually felt was really right for projects. I stayed true to myself. And it was a hard road, because my work was too artistic for the commercial world and too commercial for the artistic world, so I kind of lived in the middle there for a while. And then “So You Think You Can Dance” happened. I’m really grateful for that show, because I didn’t see my career going in that direction, and then all of a sudden, I had done ten years in television – and that brought America to know my work as an artist. That’s also why I’m here today, because Diane saw my work on that show. It’s like a domino effect. CR: I don’t want you to have to define your work in a few words, but is there any sort of physical vocabulary that you think is quintessentially “Mia Michaels?” MM: You know, I think I foreshadowed my career by naming my company R.A.W. – Reality at Work. My work took on a life as this very raw, human, soulful movement. It came from the human spirit as opposed to just choreographer’s dance steps. It wasn’t just about vocabulary – it was about telling stories. And by telling stories, that got me interested in creating theater, knowing that I love to tell stories through human organic movement. CR: Speaking of storytelling, I’ve noticed in rehearsals how your movement often grows out of what’s happening in the scene. What is your process of collaboration with Diane like? MM: Working with Diane, every day I am growing and being challenged and pushed. And yet, we’re finding this really cool collaboration where I’ll finish her sentences and she finishes mine. She makes my work better, and I hope that she says the same thing too. Having a director that you fully trust is the first step to a great collaboration. I’m actually creating this with her and loving every step of it. CR: One of the great things about this show is that we have Barrie’s imagination at the center of the piece. As a choreographer, how do you help define the space of Barrie’s imagination?

MM: Anything’s possible when you deal with someone’s imagination or creative space. There’s no limitations, no boxes, no boundaries – you just go as far as you can go and then pull back if need be. In our process, Diane has pushed me to just get it out, get it out, get it out, but then once I’ve laid the foundation and the structure, I can go in and really paint the magic and enhance the vocabulary of the show. CR: I have noticed that you are very open to the childlike spirit of the show, and that is really fun to watch. MM: The childlike energy in our creative space – through the adults, through the children, even through Porthos the dog – keeps us laughing and keeps us excited. Even when it’s stressful, we have fun, and it’s like a big family…of kids. No matter how old we are, this is allowing us to truly tap into our childhoods. Whenever I get stuck, I try to tap into my 5-year-old self.

CR: Do you have any personal connection to Peter Pan from your childhood that made you want to work on Finding Neverland?

MM: Not really, but the crazy thing is that when I got called to come to the Finding Neverland reading in New York last year, I had been really praying and meditating on my transition and wanting to be in theater for a while. When I saw an email saying that Diane Paulus wanted me at the read-through, I was on the next plane. I had not watched the movie; I didn’t know the story. And there I was sitting in this reading, and I wept because I personally connected so deeply to this project – the story of a child dealing with the death of both his parents, which I had just come through in the last couple years of my life – as well as the struggle of being stuck as an artist. For the last few years, I had been wanting a change, and the opportunity to work on Finding Neverland felt like my prayers were being answered. I knew that I had to do this project for a reason bigger than myself. CR: Going forward, is there anything that you would like to revolutionize about dance in musical theater? MM: For my journey in theater, I hope that my language as a choreographer and creator of movement is fresh, new, and very “Mia.” I hope that it does stand apart from any other show. I’m pushing myself to go further than I’ve ever gone – I would rather fail big than stay safe. Cello A.R.T.: Pippin. He received his Master’s Degree from Indiana University, studying with legendary cellist Janos Starker. He has performed in Asia, Europe, throughout the United States and on PBS and National Public Radio. Kevin has served as principal cellist for the touring companies of the Royal Ballet and American Ballet Theater as well as the national touring productions of Evita, Cats, Titanic, Showboat, Sunset Boulevard, Phantom of the Opera, Miss Saigon, and Les Misérables. Violin A.R.T.: Debut. Composer/arranger Tara Novak has devoted the past 15 years of her life to studying music of many genres, specializing in Irish traditional music, jazz, and classical crossover. She works extensively as a soloist, and in 2013 performed the Boston premiere of Irish composer Bill Whelan’s double concerto Inishlacken with fiddler Zoe Conway. She is the solo violinist with both the Three Irish Tenors and Druid, as well as music-directing and leading her own shows, Ishna and Nollaig: An Irish Christmas.

Music and Lyrics A.R.T.: Debut. Eliot Kennedy is a British songwriter and record producer, who has worked with most major British recording artists including the Spice Girls, Céline Dion, Bryan Adams, and Take That. He won a Grammy Award and was nominated for a Golden Globe for “Never Gonna Break My Faith” by Aretha Franklin and Mary J. Blige for the film Bobby, and an Ivor Novello award for “Picture Of You” by Boyzone. Kennedy was given an honorary doctorate (DUniv) by Sheffield Hallam University for his contribution to the region’s music industry, and for his outstanding work for charities, including his own One Song Foundation.

DIANE PAULUS

Director Diane Paulus is the Artistic Director of the A.R.T. at Harvard University and was selected for the 2014 TIME 100, TIME Magazine’s annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world. Paulus is the 2013 recipient of the Tony Award for Best Director of a Musical (Pippin). A.R.T.: Witness Uganda, Pippin, The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, Prometheus Bound, Tod Machover’s Death and the Powers: The Robots’ Opera, The Donkey Show, Best of Both Worlds, Johnny Baseball. Her other recent work includes Amaluna, Cirque du Soleil’s newest creation which had its world premiere in Montreal in April 2012 and is currently on tour in the US; The Public Theater’s Tony Awardwinning revival of HAIR on Broadway and London’s West End. Diane is a Professor of the Practice in Theater in Harvard University’s English Department. Mia Michaels is an American choreographer best known for her judging and three-time Emmy Award-winning contemporary choreography on the Fox TV show “So You Think You Can Dance.” She has choreographed tours from Madonna's Drown World Tour to Cirque du Soleil's Delirium. Mia’s stage-craft started in the concert dance arena with her own New York based dance company RAW — of which she was founder, artistic director and choreographer. Mia continues to inspire and teach master classes from young professional dancers, to prestigious dance institutions all over the world. In 2013, Mia was named by Variety Magazine as one of the most innovative women. Mia is very honored to be part of this project.

About the A.R.T. The A.R.T. at Harvard University is a leading force in the American theater, producing groundbreaking work in Cambridge and beyond. The A.R.T. was founded in 1980 by Robert Brustein, who served as Artistic Director until 2002, when he was succeeded by Robert Woodruff. Diane Paulus began her tenure as Artistic Director in 2008. Under her leadership, the A.R.T. seeks to expand the boundaries of theater by programming events that immerse audiences in transformative theatrical experiences. Throughout its history, the A.R.T. has been honored with many distinguished awards, including the Tony Award for Best New Play for All the Way (2014); consecutive Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Musical for Pippin (2013) and The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess (2012), both of which Paulus directed; a Pulitzer Prize; a Jujamcyn Prize for outstanding contribution to the development of creative talent; the Tony Award for Best Regional Theater; and numerous Elliot Norton and IRNE Awards. The A.R.T. collaborates with artists around the world to develop and create work in new ways. It is currently engaged in a number of multi-year projects, including the Civil War Project, an initiative that will culminate in the staging of new work in the 2014/15 Season. Under Paulus’s leadership, the A.R.T.’s club theater, OBERON, has been an incubator for local and emerging artists and has attracted national attention for its innovative programming and business models. As the professional theater on the campus of Harvard University, the A.R.T. catalyzes discourse, interdisciplinary collaboration, and creative exchange among a wide range of academic departments, institutions, students, and faculty members, acting as a conduit between its community of artists and the university. A.R.T. artists also teach undergraduate courses in directing, dramatic literature, acting, voice, design, and dramaturgy. The A.R.T. Institute for Advanced Theater Training, which is run in partnership with the Moscow Art Theater School, offers graduate-level training in acting, dramaturgy, and voice. Dedicated to making great theater accessible, the A.R.T. actively engages more than 10,000 community members and local students annually in project-based partnerships, workshops, conversations with artists, and other enrichment activities both at the theater and across the Greater Boston area.
