WELCOME TO THE LIGHT PRINCESS! After its success last season, I am thrilled to welcome back this whimsical adaptation of George MacDonald’s classic fairy tale, The Light Princess.

DIANE PAULUS, A.R.T. ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

This production marks the continuation of our collaboration with Boston-based playwright Lila Rose Kaplan and composer Mike Pettry, who have created a theatrical adventure filled with kings and queens, witches and potions. Under the direction of Allegra Libonati (The Snow Queen and Hansel and Gretel), and featuring actors from the A.R.T. Institute Class of 2015, The Light Princess takes us on a journey of discovery and explores the bonds that keep us grounded. Turn the pages of this program for more information on the show, and for fun games to play. The holidays are a perfect time for the whole family to enjoy theater together, so on behalf of everyone at the A.R.T. and The Light Princess, I welcome you here today. Enjoy the show!

CAST DRALLA AIERKEN Gravitron What do you like most about being an actor? It gives me a chance to experience life in all

of its intensity. Where are you from? I’m from Urumqi, China. What is your favorite fairy tale and why? “Monkey King.” He is super cool. If you were a fairy tale character, who would you be? Monkey King!

STEPH JACK Queen What do you like most about being an actor? Acting makes me braver. You have to reveal your vulnerabilities and doing that day after day takes a great deal of bravery. What do you love about being underwater? It is endlessly calming. I lived on a yacht for a year when I was a child, and I was obsessed with diving into the sea and holding my breath as long as I could. It was my form of escape. What do you love most about your character? She is so full of love! I hope I become a mother someday so I can experience the Queen’s overwhelming sense of care and affection for her daughter. SEAN YVES LESSARD Man of Silver/ Gravitron What do you like most about being an actor? The best thing is getting to share a new world with an audience every night. 8

If you were a fairy tale character, who would you be? I would want to be the hero. The one to save the day and do the good deeds. What is a piece of wisdom you live by? Kindness is the key to a happy life. ASHLEY J. ‘MONET’ Princess What is your favorite fairy tale? I love Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. I just wish I could experience a magical world like that. What do you love most about your character? I love the carefree way in which she sees the world. ALEX MOLINA Prince/Gravitron If you were a fairy tale character, who would you be? Peter Pan! I want to be a kid forever!

And he can fly. If you could fly, where would you go? The White House—to give President Obama a high five! What would be the best thing about not having any gravity? I would never step in dog doo. What is the furthest depth you have ever been underwater? 20 feet deep while snorkeling! I saw a bunch of exotic fish and colorful coral.

CAST AHMAD MAKSOUD Wiseman 1 If you could fly, where would you go?If I could fly, I would find a remote, private island and make it my home away from home. Or I would just fly to Japan. What would be the best thing about not having any gravity? The best thing about not having gravity would probably be that I wouldn’t trip as much, or at all, even. What is a piece of wisdom you live by? The biggest piece of wisdom I try to live by is that, on the ladder of life, in order to keep climbing higher, you’ve got to let go before you can grab on. JASON MARKOFF Wiseman 2 If you were a fairy tale character, who would you be? A problem solving dragon who’s usually asleep but sleeptalks often with good jokes. What would be the best thing about not having any gravity? Imagine how high you could jump! So easy to climb trees and not fall! If you could make a potion do anything, what would it do? A morning readiness potion; one sip and you’re ready to leave home!

10

C BEN SIDELL Man of Stone/ Gravitron What do you like most about being an actor? My favorite part of being an actor is collaborating with a team of people to bring a story to life. Where are you from? I’m from Boston. What is a piece of wisdom you live by? Life isn’t about getting and having, it’s about giving and being. What would be the best thing about not having any gravity? The best thing about not having any gravity would be having the ability to see the world from a different perspective. KAY SMITH Gravitron What do you like most about being an actor? Being an actor makes me a better person. I’m constantly sharing the ups and downs of my life in a selfless manner to entertain others. Where are you from? Flint, MI. If you could fly, where would you go? If I could fly, I would go straight to heaven. I’d like to see what’s going on up there. What is a piece of wisdom you live by? Belief takes us where our senses cannot.

CAST COREY SULLIVAN King/Gravitron What do you like most about being an actor? I like being part of passing a story on to people, keeping the story alive, and getting to work with so many wonderful artists. What is your favorite fairy tale? Grimm’s fairy tale “The Mouse, The Bird, and The Sausage,” because it has a mouse, a bird, and a sausage. It has a terrible message though, that we should stay put and not stray from our given roles. I think if a mouse wants to be a bird or a bird wants to be a sausage, then so be it! If you could make a potion do anything, what would it do? I would make a potion that would turn me into a giraffe, and another potion to turn me back. KEVIN WADE Man of Black Diamond/Gravitron Where are you from? I’m from Sun Valley, Idaho—way, way up in the snowy mountains. I imagine the Princess would fly there to enjoy the view. What is your favorite fairy tale? Peter Pan is my favorite fairy tale. I always loved the idea of living in the woods, maybe in a treehouse—so I became obsessed with the lost boys. What is the furthest depth you have ever been underwater? I once went scuba-diving in an old shipwreck, which was fun and spooky. We saw a barracuda!

INGRID WERNER Gravitron What do you like most about being an actor? My hobby is my work—I get to play and live completely different lives from project to project. Where are you from? I’m from a town in Norway called Asker. If you were a fairy tale character, who would you be? Maleficent— she’s my favorite Disney character. As a kid I was always drawn to the “older” more complex characters rather than the princesses. I just felt drawn to the power they had and that they more often than not were completely misunderstood—I love to imagine what could have happened to them to make them so vengeful. KRISTIN WETHERINGTON Witch If you could fly, where would you go? If I could fly, I would travel nonstop! I’ve been very lucky to see many parts of the world and I’ve been bitten by the travel bug! I would most likely spend my days on a beach somewhere and fly home to sleep in my own bed at night. If you could make a potion do anything, what would it do? Time travel! I’d love to meet people that lived before I was born and I am very curious about what the future will be like. What do you love most about your character? My evil laugh! MUhahahahaha!!

CREATIVE TEAM MIKE PETTRY Music and Lyrics/Orchestrations What do you like most about being a composer/lyricist? I like writing music with my head in the sky, and writing lyrics with my feet on the ground. If you were a fairy tale character, who would you be? I see myself as a lovable talking animal sidekick, but hopefully one that is featured in a production number. If you could make a potion do anything, what would it do? The potion would taste great, but also be low-calorie. That’s all it does. What is it like to return to A.R.T.? Returning to A.R.T. feels like coming home! I’m so thrilled to be back for a new production of The Light Princess! LILA ROSE KAPLAN Book What is it like to return to the A.R.T.? It is heartwarming and delightful. What a joy to work on this show again! If you could fly, where would you go? I would fly to the moon and the stars. I would fly to a waterfall in Hawaii. I would fly in the house. What would be the best thing about not having any gravity? Flying!!!! What do you love about being underwater? Well, it’s the best place to find my husband. He’s a merman, I mean a marine biologist.

12

ALLEGRA LIBONATI Director What do you like most about being a director? I love dreaming up imaginary worlds and bringing them to life with theater artists. If you could fly, where would you go? I would fly around the world and try to see all the places that are hard to get to by airplane. The jungle, the middle of the oceans, and the North Pole! If you could make a potion do anything, what would it do? It would create delicious healthy meals instantly with one drop. I’m a terrible cook. What is your favorite part of the story of The Light Princess? I have two favorite moments: The moment when the Princess rescues the Prince, and the moment when she stands up for the first time. RICK KUPERMAN Choreography What is your favorite fairy tale and why? The Princess Bride, because Goldman mastered the fairy tale form and dances around brilliantly within its confines. Plus the best kiss in the history of humankind?! What would be the best thing about not having any gravity? Crushing the world record for pole vault. If you could make a potion do anything, what would it do? Increase the world’s empathy. And pizza. Pizza for everyone. What is it like to return to the A.R.T.? A bit like coming home. I did my undergrad at Harvard, and spent a ton of time at the Loeb, so it’s always a bit of a walk down memory lane.

CREATIVE TEAM JEFF KUPERMAN Choreography What is your favorite fairy tale and why? A Russian story called “Ivan Tsarevich and the Firebird.” It’s got adventure, twists, and many events that happen in threes, so you know it’s a good fairy tale. If you could fly, where would you go? Among the skyscrapers of New York like a superhero. What would be the best thing about not having any gravity? Not having to sweat the small stuff. Like traffic. Or existential angst. JULIA NOULIN-MERAT Scenic Elements Design What do you like most about being an set designer? I get to play all day by transforming space and perception. I love triggering people’s imagination. What is your favorite fairy tale? Bluebeard’s Castle, I am a very curious person. What is a piece of wisdom you live by? Be the change you want to see. What is your favorite part of the story of The Light Princess? The Marco Polo song. What is it like to return to the A.R.T.? It’s a thrill! To get to work on The Light Princess again, is very lucky; we get to explore her world even further!

ARTHUR OLIVER Costume Design What is your favorite fairy tale? The Wizard of OZ. Is that a fairytale? I love it, I just love those SHOES. If you could fly, where would you go? Egypt. I think it would be really cool to fly around the Pyramids. What do you love about being underwater? I love the sound of being underwater. If you could make a potion do anything, what would it do? Make ignorance disappear. PORSCHE L. MCGOVERN Lighting Design If you were a fairy tale character, who would you be? Probably the fat mouse from Cinderella. If you could fly, where would you go? Up as far as possible to see as much as possible. If you could make a potion do anything, what would it do? Provide more time for everything. What is a piece of wisdom you live by? Only you can compromise your integrity. AARON MACK Sound Design What is your favorite part of the story of The Light Princess? The flying. Some part of me wishes that I also had no gravity. What would be the best thing about not having any gravity? I could see the world from high up in the air, and I think that is the most beautiful way to look at the earth. What is a piece of wisdom you live by? “Know more today about the world than I knew yesterday, and lessen the suffering of others.” —Neil Degrasse Tyson

CREATIVE TEAM KATHLEEN DOYLE Puppet Design What do you like most about being a puppet designer? I love the act of creation! I get to CREATE a CREATURE! What do you love about being underwater? Underwater life makes me feel so curious and happy and peaceful. If you could make a potion do anything, what would it do? My magic potion would cure all diseases. It would come in a sunshine yellow atomizer. Each spritz would smell like sunshine. MADELINE SMITH Music Director What is your favorite fairy tale? My favorite fairy tale is “The Ugly Duckling.” If you could fly, where would you go? I would fly to the top of the Eiffel Tower. What would be the best thing about not having any gravity? Not having to get out of bed in the morning. LIZ HAROIAN Stage Manager What do you like most about being a stage manager? I get to watch a show evolve from auditions through closing, which is very exciting. I never get tired of seeing all the smiles on the actors’ faces during curtain call! Where are you from? I grew up in Hopkinton, MA, start of the Boston Marathon! If you were a fairy tale character, who would you be? I grew up horseback riding, so I’ve always imagined that I would be a female knight galloping around the kingdom saving people!

MICHAEL GEORGE Assistant Stage Manager What do you like most about being a stage manager? I love having the ability to surround myself with such talented people and making art. If you could make a potion do anything, what would it do? I would make a potion that would allow me to not sleep so I could constantly explore the world. What is a piece of wisdom you live by? Always stay true to you. Be yourself, everyone else is already taken. NICK O’LEARY Assistant Director What is your favorite fairy tale and why? I’ve always loved Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland because of the parade of crazy characters that Alice meets. If you could make a potion do anything, what would it do? A potion of instant teleportation. What is a piece of wisdom you live by? “Try to love the questions themselves”— Rainer Maria Rilke CHERYL TURSKI Assistant Choreographer What do you like most about being a choreographer? Making movement that fits both the actor and the music. It is always unique, always fresh and always challenging. And you get to be puppeteer to the most brilliant puppets on earth. What is your favorite fairy tale and why? “The 12 Dancing Princesses.” They dance all night every night, and obviously this sounds wonderful to me! If you were a fairy tale character, who would you be? Fairy godmother. Easy. Charming, loving, magical, sense of humor. Boom. I am in.

CREATIVE TEAM TESSA NELSON Dramaturg What is your favorite fairy tale? “Three Billy Goats Gruff ” because there are sound effects and a very scary troll. If you were a fairy tale character, who would you be? Puss in Boots because he is very clever and if someone is being unfair, he stands up to them and changes it. What would be the best thing about not having any gravity? Your feet wouldn’t get any wetter than the rest of you when it rains and your socks would stay dry. I hate wet socks. JEREMY SORTORE Vocal Coach Where are you from? Denver, CO. If you were a fairy tale character, who would you be? I would be the frog prince—he gets to hop around (almost like he doesn’t have any gravity!) and in the end everyone sees him for who he is. What would be the best thing about not having any gravity? That upside down feeling in your belly, like when you’re at the top of a roller coaster.

It has humor, magic, and a clever storyline that addresses love and acceptance in an amazing, non-traditional way. If you could make a potion do anything, what would it do? You know when you can’t think of a word and it feels like it’s on the tip of your tongue but you just can’t grasp it? I would make a potion that would help you think of that word right away. What is your favorite part of the story of The Light Princess? The idea that happiness isn’t created by what your life looks like, but by whom you share it with.

INTERVIEW WITH GEORGE MACDONALD By Tessa Nelson This production of The Light Princess is adapted from a fairy tale by Scottish author George MacDonald. Mr. MacDonald couldn’t answer questions for the program because he died over 100 years ago, but the Wisemen have done their best to guess what his answers might have been. Wiseman 1: Well, George MacDonald, it really is a pleasure having you here!

fairy tales. So, I suppose my favorite part of writing fairy tales is making my children happy.

Wiseman 2: I’m not George MacDonald, I’m the second Wiseman.

Wiseman 1: Very nice! What is your favorite thing about being underwater?

Wiseman 1: I know that, but remember, you’re pretending to be George MacDonald to help write the program.

Wiseman 2: Oh, I’ve loved the sea ever since I was a little boy. Even though the water was very very cold where I grew up, I would spend hours in the North Sea on the beaches. I’d explore tide pools, look for shells, and try to catch little fish with my hands. The ocean is definitely one of my favorite things.

Wiseman 2: Oh yeah, now I remember. I am George MacDonald and I wrote The Light Princess, one of Scotland’s most famous fairy tales. I’m very clever. Wiseman 1: Right then, George MacDonald. What is your favorite part about writing fairy tales? Wiseman 2: Well, I have eleven children, Lilia, Mary, Caroline, Greville, Irene, Winifred, Robert, Maurice, Bernard, George, and Ronald MacDonald. Wiseman 1: I bet he likes burgers. Wiseman 2: Well, he does like

Wiseman 1: Speaking of, where are you from? Wiseman 2: Well, I originally grew up on a farm in Huntly, Aberdeenshire in Scotland, but I later went to study in London. Now I live in Italy. My children Lilia, Grace, and Mary have asthma as well as terrible coughs, and the fresh Italian air is good for them.

Wiseman 1: I have one last question for you. What would be the best part of not having any gravity? Wiseman 2: Hmmmmm… Well, I must say that’s a difficult question for me. My life is full of so much gravity, both happy and sad. I have many wonderful children and a magnificent wife. They give me gravity because I love them so much. I also have great and talented friends. You may have heard of some of them. Charles Dodgson— you might know him as Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland—is a great friend of mine and very inspiring. However, I also carry

some sad gravity. My mother, Helen, died when I was only eight years old. I love her so much and miss her so terribly that I always keep a letter she wrote with me, so that I can remember her. But I don’t think gravity, happy or sad, is a bad thing to have most of the time. I think gravity is part of life and that’s why I wrote The Light Princess, so we can all learn to love and embrace all the gravity life brings. Wiseman 1: Thank you for answering some of our questions, George MacDonald, and thank you most of all for your fairy tale!

George MacDonald was an author and Christian minister who lived between 1824 and 1905. He is best known for his works of fantasy which include The Light Princess, The Princess and the Goblin, The Princess and Curdie, and Lilith: A Romance. He inspired authors such as Lewis Carroll, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkein, W.H. Auden, and many more. MacDonald’s life was not without tragedy. In addition to the death of his mother at an early age, he also lost his father, his brother, and his children Lilia, Grace and Mary; all to tuberculosis. In a time characterized by staunch Calvinism, MacDonald made a plea for religion more centered on forgiveness. An advocate for the arts and particularly theater, MacDonald gave lectures upholding actors’ moral character (generally decried by the public) and even went so far as to turn his family into a repertory theater company that toured England raising money for the English and Italian poor. Tessa Nelson is a first-year dramaturgy student at the A.R.T./MXAT Institute for Advanced Theater Training at Harvard University.
