WELCOME TO TRANS SCRIPTS, PART I: THE WOMEN Throughout the 2016/17 Season, we have explored the theater’s potential to foster empathy and inspire connection, especially in divisive times. Trans Scripts is a play driven by the goal of connection through radical listening. Inspired by his own desire to learn more about transgender individuals and their experiences, playwright Paul Lucas conducted interviews with dozens of women from the United States, the UK, and Australia over four years. Woven together, the words of these individuals form this play—making its US debut following an award-winning run at the 2015 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Through his interviews, Paul came to appreciate a message which trans activists and artists have been sharing for decades: that there is no single, uniform trans experience. Trans individuals’ efforts to determine and inhabit their own identities free of the threat of violence have taken many different forms, all influenced by race, class, and other factors. Trans Scripts emphasizes this diversity, highlighting seven individuals’ struggles, celebrations, and enduring questions. The stories in this play represent a small fraction of the breadth of trans experiences. At a time when various forces are attempting to ascribe a single (or even malicious) narrative to trans individuals in a range of circumstances, understanding this diversity is especially important. Initiatives surrounding Trans Scripts endeavor to extend the experience beyond this production alone. Following the show, I invite you to remain in the theater for Act II, a moderated conversation series featuring a roster of activists, students, medical professionals, artists, and scholars with personal or professional perspectives on transgender experiences. I hope you will also explore the work featured in the I.D. Festival, currently running at OBERON, the A.R.T.’s second stage, featuring solo acts by trans and genderqueer performers including Our Lady J, Kit Yan, Becca Blackwell, and Calpernia Addams. A Note on Trans Scripts by Shelley Bridgman In 1989, I was, from all appearances, on top of the world. I was the owner of an extremely successful incentive travel business (the second largest in the UK), arranging business trips for 60 - 600 people at a time, and the head of the trade association. But everything changed the day I decided to come to work presenting as my true self. News hit the trade papers, and, one by one, each of my major clients called me to say, “I think it’s time for a change,” which is ironic in the extreme. Within two months, I had to close the business down and was left with massive personal debts. It was a different time. And while I was hardly the first person to transition in the United Kingdom, the world was not ready for me. I had to change careers and reinvent myself, as it were—something I’ve done a few times in my life, retraining as a psychotherapist, becoming a stand-up comedian and speaker, and writing my autobiography, told through a series of imagined conversations with my heroes and sheroes. Paul Lucas and I have been friends for a decade, first meeting at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2006, where he was producing Taylor Mac and I was doing my second onewoman show. So I was delighted to be the very first trans woman Paul asked to interview for the project that would become Trans Scripts, in a noisy little coffee shop not far from Covent Garden. I have followed the project with great interest, and even acted as Dr. Violet in an early workshop production of the play in Dorset and again in London. As Paul discovered during this process, there is a huge variety of experiences that exist within the trans community, even within the trans female community. These women’s journeys are affected by multiple factors, including age, ethnicity, age at transition, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, families, and even more basic things such as temperament. When Paul and I first spoke, he was planning on exploring all aspects of the trans experience, including trans men and trans women, the genderqueer and gender non-conforming people, and even different gender configurations across cultures. Eventually, though, what has emerged in Trans Scripts, Part I: The Women is a portrait of a diverse cross section of trans women from the generation that existed between early pioneers such as Roberta Cowell, Christine Jorgensen, and others through to recent high-profile examples like Caitlin Jenner. Women like me who, while not the very first to transition, fought in the trenches in a time when we were denied access to medical treatment unless we subscribed to a narrow narrative that was deemed acceptable by the so-called "experts" who were really gatekeepers. The clinics insisted that individuals get divorced and spend two years living in their desired gender role before they would refer for surgery. In the 1980s and 1990s, waiting lists were very long. All this, along with a psychiatrist who dragged his feet, resulted in me living in a role for six years before receiving a referral. There are many young, strong, self-assured voices within the current crop of trans activists, but I like to think that my generation, and those before us, made it just a little easier for those who follow. I am pleased that Paul has had the insight to shine a light on a generation of women whose stories have yet to be heard by a wide audience. A Note from Playwright Paul Lucas Trans Scripts, Part I: The Women is the result of over 75 interviews I conducted throughout the world with people of transgender experience over a four year period. Although the play focuses on the lives of seven transgender women, each of my interviews informed the overall project in some way, providing insight into the breadth of the transgender experience. My subjects’ words have only been edited for clarity, and, with the exception of a handful of monologues, each role represents the experience of a single trans woman. I am deeply grateful to the scores of people of transgender experience who gave so generously of their time, hearts, and minds. Your voices and stories were heard.
Glossary CISGENDER
GENDER DYSPHORIA
Describes a person whose gender identity matches the biological sex assigned at their birth. Where the Latin prefix trans- is defined as “movement” across a boundary, cis- refers to the “same as” or “same side as.”
The current medically accepted term describing the distress experienced by a person whose gender identity does not match their sex assigned at birth. The term is defined in the 2013 Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition from the American Psychiatric Association, revised from the previous classification of “Gender Identity Disorder.”
CROSS-DRESSER The current accepted term to describe a person who dresses as the opposite gender of their biological sex for emotional or sexual fulfillment. Replaces the term "transvestite," which is considered offensive by some.
DRAG QUEEN, DRAG KING
The physical characteristics and traits associated with the social constructs of mascuinity, femininity, or androgyny.
A person who dresses and performs in a style associated with another gender. Drag Queens are generally men performing as females; Drag Kings are usually women performing as males.

GENDER
GENDER QUEER, GENDER NEUTRAL
The social and cultural definitions of masculinity and femininity. These are different from the biological markers of sex. The roles of gender are culturally defined and can differ drastically from society to society. 8
GENDER EXPRESSION
The personal, psychological identification of a person’s gender. This identification does not always align with the person's physical sex characteristics.
A person whose gender identity falls outside the binary and who may identify as a combination of both male and female, or as having no gender at all ("agender").
INTERSEX
TRANSITION, AFFIRMATION
A term describing a person born with chromosomes, reproductive organs, or genitals that do not develop as expected along a binary of male or female. Also referred to as differences (or disorders) of sex development. "Intersex" may also be used as a term of identity by some. This term replaces the term "hermaphrodite," which is no longer widely used.
Describes a process of socially, medically, and/or surgically affirming one's gender identity. As a process, transition does not necessarily require medical or legal alteration.
MTF, FTM Abbreviated terms that describe a trans person’s journey from male to female (MTF) or female to male (FTM). Sometimes this abbreviation is used instead of the terms trans woman (MTF) or trans man (FTM).
SEX The biological classification of male or female. This classification is based on specific biological criteria, generally related to reproduction. "Sex" may or may not correspond with gender.
SEXUAL ORIENTATION One’s emotional, physical, and romantic attraction. Exists separately from one’s gender identity.
SEX REASSIGNMENT SURGERY (SRS), GENDER CONFIRMATION SURGERY The transition of sex through surgical/ medical means. These processes have in the past been referred to as "sex-change operations," but that term is no longer widely used. May also be called "genital reconstructive surgery" (GRS).
TRANSSEXUAL A person in the process of medically changing their sex. An older medical diagnostic term still used by some trans people as a term of identity.
TRANSVESTITE A person who dresses as the gender opposite their biological sex. However, this term is no longer in common usage and has been replaced by "crossdresser." Initially, "transvestite" was one of the terms used to describe transgender persons as well. FOUNDING DIRECTOR Robert Brustein
The American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) at Harvard University is a leading force in the American theater, producing groundbreaking work in Cambridge and beyond. The A.R.T. was founded in 1980 by Robert Brustein, who served as Artistic Director until 2002, when he was succeeded by Robert Woodruff. Diane Paulus began her tenure as Artistic Director in 2008. Under the leadership of Paulus and Executive Director Diane Quinn, the A.R.T. seeks to expand the boundaries of theater by programming events that immerse audiences in transformative theatrical experiences. Throughout its history, the A.R.T. has been honored with many distinguished awards, including the Tony Award for Best New Play for All the Way (2014); consecutive Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Musical for Pippin (2013) and The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess (2012), both of which Paulus directed; a Pulitzer Prize; a Jujamcyn Prize for outstanding contribution to the development of creative talent; the Tony Award for Best Regional Theater; and numerous Elliot Norton and IRNE Awards. The A.R.T. collaborates with artists around the world to develop and create work in new ways. It is currently engaged in a number of multi-year projects, including a new collaboration with Harvard's Center for the Environment that will result in the development of new work over several years. Under Paulus’s leadership, the A.R.T.’s club theater, OBERON, has been an incubator for local and emerging artists and has attracted national attention for its innovative programming and business models. As the professional theater on the campus of Harvard University, the A.R.T. catalyzes discourse, interdisciplinary collaboration, and creative exchange among a wide range of academic departments, institutions, students, and faculty members, acting as a conduit between its community of artists and the university. The A.R.T. plays a central role in Harvard's newly launched undergraduate Theater, Dance, and Media concentration, teaching courses in directing, dramatic literature, acting, voice, design, and dramaturgy. The A.R.T. Institute for Advanced Theater Training, which is run in partnership with the Moscow Art Theatre School, offers graduate training in acting, dramaturgy, and voice. Dedicated to making great theater accessible, the A.R.T. actively engages more than 5,000 community members and local students annually in project-based partnerships, workshops, conversations with artists, and other enrichment activities both at the theater and across the Greater Boston area. Through all of these initiatives, the A.R.T. is dedicated to producing world-class performances in which the audience is central to the theatrical experience.

Education & Community Programs A.R.T. Education & Community programs offer in-depth access to A.R.T. artists and productions for everyone in our community. Education Experience A.R.T. Education Experiences spark meaningful discourse, in-school and out. In addition to fostering creativity, collaboration, and intellectual curiosity in our community, we support teachers with free artsintegrated teaching tools and affordable tickets to world-class theater at the A.R.T. Community Connections A.R.T. partners with Boston-area non-profit organizations, bringing high-quality arts experiences to underserved families and individuals. Community Connections pair subsidized tickets to A.R.T. performances with enrichment programming ranging from private artist talks to in-depth workshops. Neighborhood Podcast Play Series A.R.T. works with non-profit partners around the city to enliven and creatively engage with our public spaces through site-specific audio plays written by local children and teens, available on our website. 22
A.R.T. Kids Company Children ages 5 - 10 join us on Saturday mornings to learn the fundamentals of theater in the fall and spring by creating re-imaginings of classic and contemporary tales, live! Proclamation An ensemble of local high school juniors and seniors team up with A.R.T. artists and Harvard scholars for an eight-week afterschool play-making intensive. The result is a vivid, provocative, extremely fresh performance work.
