Artistic Director's Welcome DIANE PAULUS The Terrie and Bradley Bloom Artistic Director American Repertory Theater

Welcome to the world premiere of the musical Waitress! From the moment I saw Adrienne Shelly’s 2007 film, I felt that it had the heartbeat of a musical. I knew the story could "sing"—the big question was who would be able to write a score that could capture the unique tone of the film, which is at once whimsical, quirky, and deeply emotional. After spending the last few years working on this project with Sara Bareilles, I feel she was born to write the music for Waitress. Sara has captivated the world of pop music with her extraordinary voice and heartfelt songs. Lucky for us, she is now sharing her gift with the musical theater world by creating a score that captures the humanity of all the characters in this story with her signature mix of humor and heartache. Our team became complete when acclaimed screenwriter and film director Jessie Nelson joined the project as our book writer, and the inventive Chase Brock signed on as our choreographer. I am thrilled that this team is making their A.R.T. debut in collaboration with our immensely talented cast led by Tony Award-winning actress Jessie Mueller. Returning to A.R.T. is the incredible Broadway design team of Finding Neverland: set designer Scott Pask, costume designer Suttirat Larlarb, lighting designer Kenneth Posner, and sound designer Jonathan Deans.

Cover Design: Joel Zayac

Waitress tells the story of a woman who finds the courage and strength to escape her abusive marriage and pursue dreams that she thought were no longer possible. At the Grammy Awards this year, President Obama boldly delivered the message that one in four women in the United States has experienced some form of domestic violence. He also noted that "artists have a unique power to change minds and attitudes and get us thinking and talking about what matters." It is my hope that Waitress will help contribute to this dialogue.

A Note from Writer Jessie Nelson When my daughter was twelve, she became obsessed with a movie she had seen at a slumber party. It was Waitress. She subsequently re-watched it at fifteen sleepovers at our house. In between serving pizza and birthday cake, I watched it fifteen times, too. I marveled at seeing how riveted these young girls were by the film. Were they responding to the themes of camaraderie and sisterhood? Were they enamored by the love story? When I spoke to them all about it, what seemed to resonate most deeply for them (and I’m translating here) was the notion of a character extricating herself from a relationship where she had had to diminish herself in order to survive it. I even saw my husband sit down with them one night, watch it, too, and sob. Clearly Adrienne Shelly’s film had captured deeply universal feelings. So when the opportunity to work on this musical came my way I was already intimately familiar with Adrienne’s beautiful script. When I met Diane Paulus, I knew it was no accident that 10

this jewel of a piece had landed in her tender hands. Then I heard Sara Bareilles’s music, and I was astounded by the rare beauty, depth, and unique humor of what she had captured. I felt incredibly lucky to join the team. In a certain way I feel that everything I know as a writer came from my nine years as a waitress. An older waitress who referred to herself proudly as a "lifer" once told me that you can know everything about a person by how they treat their waitress. She would watch customers and size up their character in one brush stroke. She entertained herself and me by giving them names. The customers who kept changing their order became The But Then Agains, the over-sharer became The I Don’t Want A Talk About It But. I came to consider waitressing a team sport, that seamless flow you create with each other—here’s the menus, you get the waters, I’ll bring the coffee, go hide in the bathroom I’ll deal with them—is a dance that gets perfected with time and trust. That period when I carried the tray was one of the most unexpectedly meaningful times of my life because of the camaraderie I felt with the women I worked with— women I normally would never have known. I saw them five nights a week, eight hours a night, and in many ways they became closer to me than my closest friends. When I got my first break, and left the restaurant in California, two of the waitresses flew to New York on opening night to surprise me. We had never seen each other without a nametag and uniform. One of them had never seen a play. Because they had seen me night after night covered in ketchup, coping with an entitled a-hole, bussing a ten-top, reeling from a 1% tip, there was no one I would have rather shared that evening with. I think of them constantly as we rehearse, and I think of Adrienne Shelly, who should still be with us but is in spirit.

"In a certain way I feel that everything I know as a writer came from my nine years as a waitress."

A Note from Composer Sara Bareilles A little over two years ago, I sat across from Diane Paulus at a restaurant in Times Square, while she told me about a new project she was developing. She was in the beginning phases of a stage adaptation of the 2007 independent film Waitress, and was curious if I had any interest in trying my hand at composing the score. I was incredibly flattered, but also intimidated by the prospect of taking on a project of that size. Lucky for me, I was also in a phase of saying yes to things that scared me. I went home that day and, in the following week, watched Adrienne Shelly’s movie about a flawed but soulful woman, the community that loved her, and her personal journey to rediscover her own strength. I watched the main character, Jenna, struggle to regain her sense of self, and find true love in the process. I was deeply moved and decided to officially jump on board to see where this project would lead me. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made, professionally or otherwise. My role as composer has been such a gift. I found a piece of myself in each of these characters and learned so much from trying to tell their stories. It has helped me rediscover a purity and a playfulness in my own songwriting that I haven’t felt in years. I felt liberated to find new ways to express my ideas, and energized by the giant puzzle we were all trying to put together. We have spent the last two years around conference tables and in various living rooms, poring over the screenplay, picking our brains for how best to preserve the true essence of this story, while helping it adapt to a new medium. It has been immensely challenging, and at times, completely overwhelming. I have marveled at and learned from the brilliant and bold creative team that emerged along the way, and our process has reflected the nature of what this show is all about: collaboration, trust, instinct, and heart. I am extremely proud of this production, and most of all, the wonderfully talented creative family that has developed around it. There has been no shortage of missteps and hard lessons, but I have always felt great faith that we were making something from a place of love, which, in my humble opinion, is the only way I ever want to bake. 13

FOUNDING DIRECTOR Robert Brustein

The A.R.T. at Harvard University is a leading force in the American theater, producing groundbreaking work in Cambridge and beyond. The A.R.T. was founded in 1980 by Robert Brustein, who served as Artistic Director until 2002, when he was succeeded by Robert Woodruff. Diane Paulus began her tenure as Artistic Director in 2008. Under her leadership, the A.R.T. seeks to expand the boundaries of theater by programming events that immerse audiences in transformative theatrical experiences. Throughout its history, the A.R.T. has been honored with many distinguished awards, including the Tony Award for Best New Play for All the Way (2014); consecutive Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Musical for Pippin (2013) and The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess (2012), both of which Paulus directed; a Pulitzer Prize; a Jujamcyn Prize for outstanding contribution to the development of creative talent; the Tony Award for Best Regional Theater; and numerous Elliot Norton and IRNE Awards. The A.R.T. collaborates with artists around the world to develop and create work in new ways. It is currently engaged in a number of multi-year projects, including a new collaboration with Harvard's Center for the Environment that will result in the development of new work over several years. Under Paulus’s leadership, the A.R.T.’s club theater, OBERON, has been an incubator for local and emerging artists and has attracted national attention for its innovative programming and business models. As the professional theater on the campus of Harvard University, the A.R.T. catalyzes discourse, interdisciplinary collaboration, and creative exchange among a wide range of academic departments, institutions, students, and faculty members, acting as a conduit between its community of artists and the university. A.R.T. plays a central role in Harvard's newly launched undergraduate Theater, Dance, and Media concentration, teaching courses in directing, dramatic literature, acting, voice, design, and dramaturgy. The A.R.T. Institute for Advanced Theater Training, which is run in partnership with the Harvard Extension School, offers graduate training in acting, dramaturgy, and voice. Dedicated to making great theater accessible, the A.R.T. actively engages more than 5,000 community members and local students annually in project-based partnerships, workshops, conversations with artists, and other enrichment activities both at the theater and across the Greater Boston area. Through all of these initiatives, the A.R.T. is dedicated to producing world-class performances in which the audience is central to the theatrical experience.

Education & Community Programs Providing an unprecedented level of access to A.R.T. artists and productions, we offer a wide array of programming for everyone in our community. Education Experience A.R.T. engages students by connecting our productions with classroom curriculum and students’ lives. In addition to inspiring creativity, collaboration, and intellectual curiosity in our community, we support teachers with free artsintegrated teaching tools, free classroom visits, and subsidized tickets to world-class theater at the A.R.T. Community Connections A.R.T. partners with Boston-area non-profit organizations, bringing high-quality arts experiences to underserved families and individuals. Community Connections organizations work with A.R.T. to develop a custom-built arts partnership pairing subsidized tickets to A.R.T. performances with an array of enrichment programming ranging from private artist talks to creative workshops.

Neighborhood Podcast Play Series A.R.T. works with non-profit partners around the city to enliven and creatively engage with our public spaces through site-specific audio plays written by local children and teens, available on our website. WORDplay Summer Theater & Writing Camp Now in its third year, A.R.T. and 826 Boston partner for their annual camp for children ages 11-14. Twenty-five students participate in the free, five-week program to write scripts, design sets, costumes, and perform plays inspired by the A.R.T. season. A.R.T. Kids Company Children ages 5-10 join us on Saturday mornings every semester to learn the fundamentals of theater-making by creating weekly re-imaginings of classic and contemporary fairy tales, live! Proclamation An ensemble of local high school juniors and seniors team up with A.R.T. artists and Harvard scholars for an eight-week afterschool theatermaking intensive. The ensemble creates a vivid, provocative, extremely fresh, high-quality performance work. This season, Proclamation 3 will explore topics of the environment and beyond, performing at OBERON on Sunday, November 15.
