Artistic Director’s Welcome @americanrep #WarholCapoteART
WELCOME TO WARHOLCAPOTE As Andy Warhol and Truman Capote would no doubt have appreciated, this play arrives at A.R.T. following a captivating creative journey. Spurred by the realization that Warhol and Capote had dreamed of co-writing a play, adaptor Rob Roth has crafted this "non-fiction invention" through a decade of research and discovery. Over years of conversations—all recorded by Warhol—these two artists imagined a play that would blur the boundaries between reality and art. The show never came to be, but both artists left a deep legacy of fascination with celebrity and the commodification of art in America. The tapes remained archived and unheard until Rob began work on this project. Now, in an era when we are all wedded to devices much more powerful than the tape recorder that Warhol called his “wife,” it is exhilarating to bring these seminal artists’ vision to new life here at A.R.T. Best known for his work as the director of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast on Broadway, as well as his direction of rock-and-roll tours for Alice Cooper, KISS, and others, Rob Roth makes his A.R.T. debut—and his debut as a writer—with this production. He is joined by tour-de-force director Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening, American Idiot, Hedwig and the Angry Inch), also making his A.R.T. debut. Additionally, we are thrilled to welcome actors Stephen Spinella (Spring Awakening, An Iliad, James Joyce's The Dead) and Dan Butler (Twentieth Century, Biloxi Blues, “Frasier”). Known for his landmark portrayal of Prior in the original Broadway production of Angels in America, Stephen Spinella makes his A.R.T. debut as Andy Warhol. Dan Butler returns to A.R.T. as Truman Capote, following his fiery performance as George Wallace in our 2013 production of All the Way.

A.R.T.’S SEASON DRAWS INSPIRATION FROM POP ART TO A LANDMARK ALT-ROCK ALBUM, FROM POETRY TO CLASSIC LITERATURE Sense and Sensibility
The White Card
Bedlam’s exuberant, inventive staging of Jane Austen’s classic novel follows the adventures (and misadventures) of the Dashwood sisters—sensible Elinor and hypersensitive Marianne—after their sudden loss of fortune. Bursting with humor, emotion, and bold theatricality, Sense and Sensibility asks: when reputation is everything, how do you follow your heart?
At a dinner party thrown by an influential Manhattan couple for an up-and-coming artist, questions arise about what—and who—is actually on display. This world-premiere play poses the question, “Can American society progress if whiteness stays invisible?” The White Card is commissioned by ArtsEmerson, Boston, MA, in association with American Repertory Theater, Cambridge, MA, and The Broad Stage, Santa Monica, CA.

A Note from Adaptor Rob Roth In 1978 Andy Warhol and Truman Capote decided to write a Broadway play. Andy suggested that he tape-record their conversations with his Sony Walkman, and that the tapes would form the basis of the play. Truman enthusiastically agreed, and they began their collaboration.
In 2007, after lengthy discussion with the Andy Warhol Foundation and the Truman Capote Trust, I was given permission to search for these specific recordings. Matt Wrbican, head archivist at the Warhol Museum, hunted through the cassettes, eventually unearthing fifty-nine ninetyminute cassettes with “Truman” written on them. Approximately eighty hours of recordings. The majority of the tapes were undated. The cassettes were digitally transferred and then word-for-word transcribed by a bonded court reporting company. The resulting transcripts are the source for the majority of the play. Direct quotes from Andy and Truman found in interviews and other recordings were employed as well. The structure and location of the five conversations that form the play are wholly imagined, but every single word is directly from the mouths of Andy and Truman: a non-fiction invention. I have followed the creative path they discussed together, which Andy, luckily, recorded. 8

The project was never completed, and the tapes, along with approximately 3,000 others, were stored. Upon Andy’s death in 1987, the entire collection of cassette recordings was sent to the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, where they remained un-listened to, un-catalogued, and un-transcribed.

The American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) at Harvard University is a leading force in the American theater, producing groundbreaking work in Cambridge and beyond. The A.R.T. was founded in 1980 by Robert Brustein, who served as Artistic Director until 2002, when he was succeeded by Robert Woodruff. Diane Paulus began her tenure as Artistic Director in 2008. Under the leadership of Paulus and Executive Producer Diane Borger, the A.R.T. seeks to expand the boundaries of theater by programming events that immerse audiences in transformative theatrical experiences. Throughout its history, the A.R.T. has been honored with many distinguished awards, including the Tony Award for Best New Play for All the Way (2014); consecutive Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Musical for Pippin (2013) and The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess (2012), both of which Paulus directed; a Pulitzer Prize; a Jujamcyn Prize for outstanding contribution to the development of creative talent; the Regional Theater Tony Award; and numerous Elliot Norton and IRNE Awards. The A.R.T. collaborates with artists around the world to develop and create work in new ways. It is currently engaged in a number of multi-year projects, including a new collaboration with Harvard's Center for the Environment that will result in the development of new work over several years. Under Paulus’s leadership, the A.R.T.’s club theater, OBERON, has been an incubator for local and emerging artists and has attracted national attention for its innovative programming and business models. As the professional theater on the campus of Harvard University, the A.R.T. catalyzes discourse, interdisciplinary collaboration, and creative exchange among a wide range of academic departments, institutions, students, and faculty members, acting as a conduit between its community of artists and the university. The A.R.T. Institute for Advanced Theater Training, which is run in partnership with the Moscow Art Theatre School, offers graduate training in acting, dramaturgy, and voice. The A.R.T. also plays a central role in Harvard's undergraduate Theater, Dance, and Media concentration. Dedicated to making great theater accessible, the A.R.T. actively engages more than 5,000 community members and local students annually in project-based partnerships, workshops, conversations with artists, and other enrichment activities both at the theater and across the Greater Boston area. Through all of these initiatives, the A.R.T. is dedicated to producing world-class performances in which the audience is central to the theatrical experience.

A.R.T. Kids Company Children ages 5–10 join us on Saturday mornings in the fall and spring to learn the fundamentals of theater by creating re-imaginings of classic and contemporary tales, live! Summer 2017 also marked the launch of the first-ever A.R.T. Kids Company Jamboree, a weeklong half-day program integrating storytelling with STEM learning. Proclamation An ensemble of local high school juniors and seniors team up with A.R.T. artists and Harvard scholars for an eight-week afterschool play-making intensive. The result is a vivid, provocative, and fresh performance work. This fall, the ensemble will explore themes of seeking, using, and creating truth in Proclamation 5: True That!, to be performed at OBERON on November 4 and 5. To learn more about A.R.T. Education & Community Programs, visit: americanrepertorytheater.org/education

As of September 2017 *This Season, the A.R.T. fondly remembers Alice Austin, who recently passed away unexpectedly. Alice provided description for blind and low-visioned patrons of numerous productions at A.R.T. and around the Greater Boston area. Since first working with A.R.T. on The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess (2011), Alice guided the theater in the creation and curation of audio-described performances as well as advocating nationally for access to the arts.
