Outdoors CLUB THE ASG
One of the greatest things about the United States is the country’s natural beauty and the opportunity to participate in a plethora of outdoor recreational activities. The ASG Outdoors Club seeks to introduce students to the experience of outdoor recreation by participating in a variety of activities including hiking, kayaking, rock climbing, and camping among others.
ANNUAL GREENVILLE FESTIVAL On Sunday September 13th, 2015 the American Scholar Group Outdoors Club held its inaugural event by fielding a team of competitors in the Greenville Outdoor Recreation and Arts Festival River Games. Our dedicated students braved cold temperatures and rain to win first place in the River Games competition. This was the first experience kayaking for Outdoors Club President An Lu Khanh of Saigon, Vietnam, who said it was the most fun he has had since he’s been in the U.S.
NATURE HIKE SPARKS FUN STUDENT COMPETITION On Sunday October 11th, the ASG Outdoors club held its second event, a six mile hike along the Shenango River Trail in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. In addition to hiking on the towpath of the abandoned Erie Extension Canal, our students held a picnic and rock skipping competition on a sandbar in the Shenango River. The students had the opportunity to experience western Pennsylvania’s natural beauty, while learning elements of basic woods-craft, and testing their physical endurance. Most importantly, our nine young adventurers had fun while enjoying time with their friends in nature!

BUSINESS ROLES Many high school students have the belief that if they want to work in a business some day, they must be an accountant or financial officer. Although these are important positions, ASG Greenville seniors Caroline, Elaine, Mae, Mason and Y, along with their classmates, discovered that those roles are not their only options when working in a business. Americans for the Competitive Enterprise System (ACES), a non-profit organization from Erie, Pa, held a business simulation experience to Greenville High School seniors the week of October 19th, where they had the opportunity to discover where their true talents may lie within a business. From advertising and marketing to sales and IT, ASG students got a glimpse of the components of running a business.
Caroline was a member of the winning team and her persuasive sales pitch to potential customers, earned her four awards and a one hundred dollar prize.

CMU LEAP PROGRAM
EXPLORING COMPUTER SCIENCE TO FIND A MORE EXCITING TOMORROW ASG student Carl Tang recently completed LEAP, a highly competitive summer camp hosted by Carnegie Mellon University. Led by Carnegie Mellon’s computer science department, the annual 7 week camp is designed especially for students interested in computer science, programming and robotics.
Located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Carnegie Mellon University has the #1 computer sciences graduate program in the country according to U.S. News Ranking.
LEAP participants learned about the various disciplines under experts and professors from CMU. They also participated in many projects with Carnegie Mellon students. Each LEAP participant had to complete a final project and present it to fellow
participants, professors, and family members. Student projects included music visualizers, computer games and even tic-tac-toe playing robot Carl designed a game that allows users to play a game of pool on their computers. However in Carl’s version, positive electric fields surround each ball. Depending on the angle and force applied by the user on the cue ball, the pool balls would repel each other at various speeds, much like placing two magnets with the same charges together. The senior at Ursuline high school spent many hours and days perfecting the algorithms required to make the physics of the game run smoothly. “I love playing physics so I’m always interested in how objects can affect each other. We played pool everyday during lunch so it gave me the idea to create this electronic version you could play anywhere” Camp counselors and professors shared that Carl had one of the most impressive projects in the camp because of the intense level of trigonometry required to make the game work. Carl plans to keep perfecting the graphics and adding new features to make the game even more interesting this school year.
Former LEAP participants have attended some of the top universities in the country and went on to hold executive positions in Fortune 500 companies. We believe Carl will be following in their footsteps!

Each group had a table to display their work, cultural items, research about a selected country. This event, set up like a college or job fair, had each group’s booth set up so that visitors could easily explore all the various countries on display. The students were able to share their culture, traditions, customs, landmarks, holidays, food and drink with classmates and school community. Our ASG students had two displays: China and Vietnam.

Focus on what you love to do. Don’t let failure define you. Never give up on yourself. These are some of the words of wisdom given to Kennedy Catholic High School students from Mercyhurst University President Michael Victor during the school’s 2nd Annual College & University Presidents’ Week, which took place November 9th through the 13th. Victor delivered a highly motivating speech, full of his own personal growth experiences as well as inspiring anecdotes of successful alumni from Kennedy Catholic High School and Mercyhurst University. Sophomore Alice Vu said that President Victor’s presentation was interesting and fun because he brought the school’s mascot, “Luke” with him, who danced around and launched Mercyhurst University branded t-shirts to the students. Victor’s final piece of advice left the students full of laughter, “Be nice to the nerds, they’re going to be your boss someday.” 2016 yearbook

The new business club has become one of the most popular clubs under the leadership of club president Elaine Wu, with David Ho serving as club adviser. The Film Club, under the leadership of Cai Jia, has also proven hugely successful, and its members are learning the basics of film-making in preparation for creating their own cinematic production. Finally, the student events committee has provided an immense amount of assistance to ASG staff in planning and setting up for events. Balancing friends, schoolwork and family in different timezones can be difficult for students studying abroad, and fitness may not be a priority. However, the ASG health and wellness initiative has encouraged students to become more active and aware of their choices. Two days a week for two hours each session, students have full access to Greenville High School’s professional fitness center. Mason Zhang said he really enjoys going to the fitness center because he wants, “To become stronger and healthier.” Along with adding exercise into their lives, students are advised to add vegetables and fruits into their diets and limit the amount of fatty snacks they consume. Healthy eating habits with the addition of exercise allows for more productive lifestyles and increased happiness, essentials for busy, growing teenagers.

The first scenes were shot in early December and production is scheduled to continue throughout the spring. ASG students and staff are looking forward to the completion of this film, and to witnessing the creative talents of our students showcased on the silver screen. We wish the members of the film club luck with this, and all their future productions.
