ARRIVAL IN US

ARRIVAL IN

AMERICA PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA

DAY 1

ARRIVAL @ CHAPEL HILL

TODAY IS THE FIRST DAY I WENT TO THE FARM. IT’S A VERY EXCITING EXPERIENCE. IN MY OPINION, THE MOST INTERESTING THING DURING THE FIRST TIME IS THE FREE TIME ON THE FARM. DURING THE HOURS, WE HAVE AN ADVENTURE IN THE HOUSE WE LIVE. WE FIND MANY INTERESTING THINGS IN THE DORMITORY.WE EVEN FOUND A BET ON THE THIRD FLOOR. I ALSO EXPERIENCED THE MOTORBIKE AND CLIMB ON THE HILL. THROUGH THE DAY, I REALIZED I CAN DO A LOT OF THINGS I ENABLE TO. AS A GROUP LEADER, I LEARN TO TAKE CARE OF THE GROUP MEMBERS. IT IS REALLY A CHALLENGE, BUT ALSO MADE ME STRONGER AND GREATER. IT ALSO ALLOWED ME TO PRACTICE ENGLISH DURING THE CONVERSATION BETWEEN FOREIGNERS. I WAS IMPRESSED BY THE OPEN MINDS OF AMERICANS. THEY ARE REALLY GOOD. - LEO

HOWEVER, IN MY OPINION, THE MOST FAVORITE ACTIVITY FOR ME IS PAINTING THE MURAL. NEEDLESS TO SAY, IT IS GREAT FUN TO ENJOY THE PRECESS OF PAINTING WITH SHARPSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND ROOMMATES, AS WELL AS MY FRIENDS. MEANWHILE, THE REASON THE ACTIVITY REALLY ATTRACTED ME IS THE SPIRIT THAT NEEDS ALL OF US TO COLLABORATE WITH EACH OTHER. AFTER THE WORK IS FINISHED, LOOKING AT THE AWESOME PICTURE, I FELT THE FEELING OF HAPPINESS AND SATISFACTION. WHAT A WONDERFUL ACTIVITY.“ - WENDY

So different, yet so alike: Sharpsville students greet delegation from Chinese sister school By JOE WIERCINSKI Herald Staff Writer

Shanghai during a summer academic camp designed to introduce them to American high schools and colleges. It’s part of an education program started five years ago by Greenville area businessman David Ho, an alumnus of Thiel College. The Chinese teenagers met 15 local students from the Lead Team at Sharpsville High School, which in April became a sister school with Shanghai International Studies University Bilingual School.

Vickie Beckman, American Scholar Group’s general manager for global engagement, said the Chinese students, accompanied by their principal and two teachers, also will visit Greenville and Youngstown’s Ursuline high schools, as well as Thiel and Westminster colleges, Western Case and Gannon American Scholar Group, Greenville, universities and the University of is sponsoring 23 students from Pittsburgh before returning home

SHARPSVILLE – Students from sister schools in China and the United States spent a day last week getting to know each other. Chances are, some of them will attend classes together during the coming school year.

Aug. 15. In the meantime, they’re lodging in Greenville in homes and dormitories owned by American Scholar Group. Sharpsville Principal Tim Dadich and other district staffers came up with the idea of having the students from the two schools paint murals together as a way to channel their curiosity about each other. They worked in groups designing, drawing and painting murals on themes of friendship, hope, collaboration and diversity. Alivia Shuttleworth, who will be a senior, credited Tao Yuan Chen – who goes by “Leo” because it’s a more easily pronounced American name – for the overall concept of their team’s mural, “Hope.” Brightly colored suns on the edges shone toward the center. One represented China and the other the United States. Human figures

to fly the plane. That was so cool.” During their visit, the students went to a Pittsburgh Pirates game. They hiked at Nelson’s Ledges State Park in Ohio, went horseback riding and spent a day swimming “It’s pretty cool that these kids Monday, August 3, 2015 in Lake Erie at Presque Isle. are curious about America,” the 18-year-old said. “We’re trying to in silhouette at the bottom reached give them a big scoop of what life is upward toward an angel as though like over here.” they were reaching together for a Zheng Yuan Tew, or “Stacie,” already common goal. knows something about that. She has relatives who live in Las Vegas and California and was making her third visit to the United States. Language differences aside, Bobby Demofonte said the students from both countries see a strong work ethic and a good education as the key to a happy, successful life.

The 15-year-old wasn’t sure if she will spend her senior year studying here, but fellow sophomore “Wendy,” Yu Zhiwen, said she would like to make further use of the English she has been studying side by side with Chinese since kindergarten. “I would like to study in an American university,” Wendy said, “maybe mathematics or something medical.” Jinfan Qian, who goes by “Eric,” made a special memory on the flight the students took from Chicago to Pittsburgh.

“Leo thought of the design and drew it out,” said Alivia, 17. “The rest of us are helping to paint it.” The people “expect something,” as they reach upward, Leo said while painting the angel’s wings. “In Chinese culture, an angel always helps people when they need help.” The 15-year-old added that the mural expressed “the hope for “The pilot let me get in the cockpit friendship between China and seat,” he said. “He America. All people from all over the and sit in his talked to me a little bit about how world want peace.”

In Sharpsville, they had an American-style lunch of burgers and hot dogs with baked beans in the school cafeteria. Beckman said “one student for sure, and maybe as many as four” will be enrolling and paying tuition through American Scholar Group for classes at one or more of the local high schools they visited. The four murals the students painted will hang in the cafeteria, Dadich said, as part of the sister school relationship between the two high schools.
