America SCORES New York is an organization defined by Teamwork, Leadership, and Commitment. From the leadership shown by our Program Director and school leads, to the daily mentorship provided by our coaches, all of our staff, dedicated volunteers, and funding partners work together tirelessly to invest in the future of New York City. Fiscal 2017 was a year of making new friends and incredible growth. We saw a significant expansion on the programming side on number of students served, community partners, schools, games played, poems written, and even boroughs reached! With the introduction of our first high school team, we are especially proud to now say that we offer America SCORES programs to children from Kindergarten all the way through 12th grade. From an organizational perspective, we have continued building our energy and expertise in every way imaginable. We brought on talented new staff, expanded our Board and Junior Board, and added to an ever-impressive stable of teacher-coaches. On the fundraising side, new foundations and corporate partners stepped up to give more NYC students the chance to better themselves on the field, in the classroom and around the community through SCORES. Meanwhile, our long-time supporters gave us the confidence to innovate while upholding the core values of America SCORES. We piloted two programs in Harlem for older students in response to the school and community needs: “One Hen Academy,” which provides financial literacy lessons for middle school students; and “Kicking it Forward,” an alumni program for high school students. We have to give so much credit to the staff and coaches who on-boarded three entirely new elementary school programs during the year, an incredible feat in its own right, before taking into account the extra effort required to launch our two pilot programs. These special individuals are changing lives every day and don’t get enough credit for the work they do. Lastly, we can’t say enough about how grateful we are for the schools that partner with us to create the safe space the children of NYC need to grow and thrive in this great city. The America SCORES New York poet-athletes are the future torch holders for community and society. We are honored to be part of such an amazing community of change-makers. We will leave you with a great bit of advice from our girls in Washington Heights: “Always be kind to your teammates and everyone, even the opposing team” - PS 173 Girls In Community,

Our Mission America SCORES New York was founded in 2001 to address the absence of high-quality after-school programs for under-funded public schools. America SCORES New York serves as a driving force in promoting sportsmanship, self-expression, commitment, and teamwork for youth in under-resourced communities in New York City. Through a combination of soccer, poetry and service-learning, our unique after-school program shines a spotlight on these poet-athletes, helping them develop the skills necessary to lead successful lives off the field and outside the classroom.

2017 Highlights 2017 was one of the best years in America SCORES New York history! We started off our year strong with our first game day in early September featuring three new schools: PS 98, PS 4, and, our first ever school in Brooklyn, PS 249. These game days were exciting and elevated by our skilled poet-athletes. In November, we held our annual Poetry SLAM! and it was our biggest yet! Poet-athletes from all over New York City gathered to recite poems that they worked on throughout the Fall in front of their peers, families, and coaches! We continued our celebraton of poetry with our Pancakes and Poetry event in January, recognizing some of our outstanding poet-athletes from SLAM and giving them the opportunity to discuss their poetry with the SCORES community. We kept busy throughout the winter months with our Winter Camp sessions and Winter SCORES Cup, as well as the promise of an exciting Spring!

America SCORES New York Annual
We started the new season with high-energy game days and our new financial literacy program, One Hen Academy. We even hosted our first high school tournament with America SCORES alumni! We ended a busy spring season with our annual Jamboree! at Columbia University Football Stadium, an incredibly spacious location that was perfect for our growing group of poet-athletes. We continued after the end of the school year, running a summer program for our poet-athletes with a new location in Inwood, and we held our annual SCORES Cup at Pier 40, where we hosted 40 teams and almost 600 players, making it New York City’s largest corporate-charity soccer tournament. Expansion is wonderful, but program quality must follow suit: ASNY students are showing better commitment to their education, improvements in physical and emotional health, and becoming more active community members! All in all, 2017 was a groundbreaking year for America SCORES New York, and we cannot wait to see what 2018 has in store!

Our Program The backbone of the America SCORES program is defined by a unique combination of soccer, poetry and service learning which inspires youth development by promoting sportsmanship, self-expression, commitment and teamwork.
Health Through Soccer
Kicking it Forward!
Our approach to soccer benefits students’ physical fitness and healthy habits, but also improves students’ conflict resolution and problem solving skills.
Kicking it Forward seeks to advise and prepare students for life after high school. Students collaborate to understand, develop, and utilize their passions and talents through a series of lessons, speakers, and internships.
The Power of Poetry
Poetry sessions throughout the fall season Junior SCORES provide poet-athletes with the opportunity to We have expanded our program to include K-2nd grade students to provide an early introduction develop the four touchstones of language to poetry and soccer to a younger generation acquisition -- reading, writing, speaking, and listening --while teaching students positive throughout our Fall and Spring seasons. modes of self-expression and communication.
Writing for the Community & One Hen Academy During the spring semester, the elementary school poet-athletes focus on student-directed service projects that address neighborhood issues identified and researched by the students themselves. The middle school service-learning component has been expanded to include a financial literacy curriculum called One Hen, which guides students through the basics of starting a business and money management, as well as the importance of helping others.

Our Events Even though our seasons are highlighted by a myriad of activities, there are four events that truly define a year at America SCORES New York. These days act as opportunities for our young poet-athletes to show off their soccer skills, perform their transformative poetry, and display their community-focused service projects, but they are often much more than that. All of these events allow the poet-athletes to interact with other students outside of their immediate community, as well as let their families and friends see what their time at SCORES really means to them!
Fall Frenzy
Poetry SLAM
In October, ten of our partner schools sent 300 elementary schoolers to take part in soccer games, poetry performances and a literacy project!
In late November, we held our 13th annual Poetry SLAM at A. Phillip Randolph High School! Inspirational, thoughtful, and powerful words spoken in 80 poems impressed all in attendance!
KIF Tournament
Jamboree!
Over 60 high school students from Harlem, Washington Heights, and the Bronx competed in the first America SCORES New York Kicking it Forward Alumni Tournament in May! This was a launching pad for the foundation of our new high school program, KIF!

America SCORES New York Annual Report 2017
Jamboree! marks the end of our spring season and gives our poet-athletes the opportunity to present their community projects and play soccer against a variety of schools outside of their communities.
Our Events America SCORES New York’s program expansion would not be possible without our four main fundraisers, which are supported by individual and corporate donations!
Marathon
Our team of five runners did an incredible job representing America SCORES New York at the TCS New York City Marathon in November. All five runners finished the race successfully and met their fundraising goals!
Celebration
This was the first year that America SCORES New York took part in the YouthINC Annual Celebration to Benefit Kids. This program provides year-long support and training in developing sustainable fundraising skills that allows us to provide more opportunities for our poet-athletes!
Winter Cup
SCORES CUP
Winter SCORES Cup, which took place on March 19, brought together 12 corporate soccer teams for an indoor tournament to raise money for America SCORES New York. Barclays took the Division 2 Cup home, while Goldman Sachs won Division 1!
On Saturday, July 8, America SCORES New York hosted its 11th annual corporate soccer tournament, the legendary SCORES Cup! Of the 40 corporate teams competing, Goldman Sachs, US Bank, and UPS each took their respective divisional championship titles.

We laugh and play and have fun everyday We joke and have luck but sometimes we don’t get along You know I love you I will never let you go I get mad at you but I can’t hold my anger for too long Because whenever I do I feel like I did you wrong Because remember this, if we are a million miles away I still feel like I’m with you Everyday a piece of you stays in my heart, Never forget me, I’m begging you please If you ever need me I will be there in a breeze
