A S N Y About America SCORES Our History America SCORES was started in 1994 in Washington, DC by public school teacher Julie Kennedy who noticed that her students had limitied after-school activities. Ms. Kennedy realized that the combination of two seemingly unrelated activities, poetry and soccer, complemented each other through mutual involvement in public performance, self-expression, and group support. The relationships that developed through teamwork and leadership on the soccer field translated to peer support in poetry workshops. The skills later allowed these poet-athletes to act as agents of change within their community through a variety of service-learning projects. The program quickly expanded throughout DC and, in 1999, Kennedy launched sites in Boston and Chicago. Today, America SCORES has a presence in 12 cities across the United States and Canada: Bay Area, Chicago, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Boston, New York, Portland, Seattle, Vancouver, and Washington, DC.

Our Mission America SCORES New York was founded in 2001 to address the absence of high-quality after-school programs for underfunded public schools. America SCORES New York serves as a driving force in promoting fair play, self-expression, commitment and teamwork for youth in under resourced communities in New York City. Through a combination of soccer, poetry and service learning, our unique after-school program shines a spotlight on these poet-athletes, helping them develop the skills necessary to lead successful lives off the field and outside the classroom.

A Message from our

Executive Director & Board Chair

A S N Y

What a year! While we had a lot of “firsts” - first program in the Bronx, first summer in Brooklyn, first poetry anthology, first high school tournament, first Winter SCORES Day - all of which are amazing in their own right - what I was most impressed by is the day-in day-out dedication from our coaches, parents and staff to support our poet-athletes in their social-emotional skill (SEL) development. The hardest work is consistently building SEL each day, hour, minute, at the America SCORES practices, workshops and games. Three years ago, we wanted to see if we could support with data what our coaches and parents already know - that building SEL through our unique model of soccer, poetry and service has a lasting impact in all areas of the students’ lives. I’m happy to report that after three years of partnering with the DOE and UpMetrics on this project, our poet-athletes are consistently outperforming their classmates on key metrics. We believe this is due to our unique curriculum, dedicated teacher-coaches, community & school-centered approach and attendance & behavioral policies. We’ve tripled in size over the past year as we try to address the vast demand for after school programs at under resourced public schools. But there is a lot of work left to do as we look at our waitlist of over 20 schools and 1,700 schools in NYC without adequate youth support. New York City records show that over 17,000 Black and Latinx students attend schools without any sports. With a program that serves 99% minority students, we strive to provide any and all students with access to and safe space for soccer, community, and teamwork. Our vision is a city in which all youth are able to access a team and have many choices with multiple team options! The experience of a team and growth through that can make all the difference for a child. With a whopping 90% of all female executives report playing sports growing up, it is clear that the leadaership, determination, and character building that develop during team sports are vital on the field and in life. America SCORES New York aims to be a leader in social justice youth development through sport and self-expression. We want to bring more awareness and attention to a sector that is too often overlooked and under-appreciated. NYC needs to invest more in its youth, and smart investments must include opportunities for personal growth through school-based and after-school activities. However, we are not going to wait for policy makers and private institutions to fully recognize the societal benefits of investing in the youth of ASNY...and so we encourage our poet-athletes to make change happen themselves. The America SCORES young people are using their talents and skills to become leaders in their communities with soccer and creative expression as their platform. We will continue to provide this platform and amplify their voices as they develop into NYC’s next generation of leaders. Soccer and poetry transcend class, race, geography and gender. Let’s use these tools for positive social change just as our poet-athletes do every day. In Community, Shannon & Adam Executive Director & Board Chair

America SCORES New York Annual Report 2018

2018 Highlights What a big year for America SCORES New York! We started off the 2017-2018 year game days beginning in late September with our largest group of poet-athletes yet. The abliity and agility of our poet-athletes never fails to impress us, and this year was no different! In October, we held our annual Fall Frenzy at our home field, Jacob H Schiff, with ten of our partner schools sending over 300 elementary schoolers to enjoy an afternoon of soccer, poetry, and a community art project! As the days got shorter, our games got greater and our focus shifted to November’s Poetry Slam! For the first time, we had two separate nights to accomodate the sheer volume of poems performed by our poet-athletes! Our celebration of poetry continued into the winter months with the 2018 Poets’ Banquet in Massachusetts where we joined our fellow America SCORES affiliate, Boston SCORES! For the first time, we had the opportunity to partner with the Embassy of Qatar for their National Sport Day and host Winter SCORES Day, a celebration of sport and health!

A S N Y With the excitement of winter programming and the success of Winter Cup, we came into the new year with anticipation for the season ahead! 2018 brought along more schools in our newest boroughs-- PS 139 in Brooklyn and PS 386, our first full-time Bronx school! With over 700 poet-athletes and 70+ teacher-coaches, we were ready to begin another season! Our high-energy game days matched the exciting events that the spring had to offer. An exciting start to programming kicked off in March and led us into April’s National Poetry Month. Our most exciting one yet, we launched our very own anthology of poems, We Are, I Can at the historic Strand Book Store. We ended the month with our annual Pancakes and Poetry, giving our young people the platform to share their poetry in their community. Our 2nd Kicking it Forward Community Tournament hosted almost 100 ASNY alumni for a day of soccer and fun, a wonderful precursor to our annual Jamboree! Over 750 people joined us at Columbia University’s Baker Athletic Complex to celebrate the culmination of yet another successful season! The start of summer brought along SCORES Cup, a day full of soccer and networking with 500 players from over 35 corporations. Our five-week Summer Program hosted our poet-athletes throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn, and ended the season with our largest Family Day yet! Our incredible growth has been matched by our quality programming, which is improving both physical and emotional health, school attendance and involvement, and community engagement. We’ve hit exciting goals this year, and we’re eager to continue striving forward as we approach our 20th anniversary!

Our Program

A S N Y

HEALTH THROUGH SOCCER Our approach to soccer benefits students’ physical fitness and healthy habits, but also improves students’ conflict resolution and problem solving skills. The backbone of the America SCORES program is defined by a unique combination of soccer, poetry, and service-learning which inspires youth development by promoting fair play, self-expression, commitment, and teamwork.

THE POWER OF POETRY Poetry sessions throughout the Fall season provide poet-athletes with the opportunity to develop the four touchstones of language acquisition --reading, writing, speaking, and listening -- while teaching students positive modes of self-expression and communcation.

WRITING FOR THE COMMUNITY & ONE HEN ACADEMY During the spring semester, the elementary school poet-athletes focus on student directed service projects that address neighborhood issues identified and researched by the students themselves. The middle school service-learning component includes a financial literacy curriculum called One Hen, which guides students through the basics of starting a business and money management, as well as the importance of helping others.

JUNIOR SCORES

We have expanded our program to include K-2nd grade students to provide an early introduction to poetry and soccer to a younger generation throughout our Fall and Spring seasons.

KICKING IT FORWARD! Kicking It Forward seeks to advise and prepare students for life after high school. Students collaborate to understand, develop, and utilize their passion and talents through a series of lessons, speakers, and internships. America SCORES New York Annual Report 2018

Our Events

A S N Y

KIF Community Tournament Over 100 high school students from Harlem, Washington Heights, and the Bronx competed in the second America SCORES New York Kicking it Forward Alumni Tournament in May! This was an exciting way to round out our year-round programming with our ASNY alumni!

Fall Frenzy In October, ten of our partner schools sent 300 elementary schoolers to take part in soccer games, poetry performances, and a literacy project!

Even though our seasons are highlighted by a myriad of activities, there are four events that truly define a year at America SCORES New York. These days act as opportunities for our young poet-athletes to show off their soccer skills, perform their transformative poetry, and display their community-focused service projects, but they are often much more than that. All of these events allow the poet-athletes to interact with other students outside of ther immmediate community, as well as let their families and friends see what their time at SCORES really means to them!

Poetry Slam In late November, we held our 14th annual Poetry SLAM at A. Phillip Randolph High School! Inspirational, thoughtful and powerful words spoken in over 100 poems impressed all in attendance!

Jamboree Jamboree! marks the end of our S pring season and gives our poet-athletes the opportunitiy to present their community projects and play soccer against a variety of schools from other communities.

Winter SCORES Day On February 12, we held our first annual Winter SCORES Day to celebrate National Sport Day in association with Embassy of Qatar! National Sport Day is celebrated by Qatari people on the second Tuesday of February each year and encourages everyone to participate in sporting activities with family and friends!

Poet’s Banquet

Pancakes and Poetry

Our Poetry Slam 2017 Shine Award winners had the opportunity to visit their fellow poet-athletes from Boston for the first annual Poets Banquet featuring poems from the young people of America SCORES New York and Boston SCORES!

Our favorite way to celebrate National Poetry Month is with Pancakes and Poetry at Home Sweet Harlem! This unique event gave our poet-athletes the opportunity to recite their poems for members of their community while enjoying incredible breakfast food!

Family Day Our five week Summer Program ends with our annual Family Day, inviting families and friends to the last exciting day and lets them get a taste of what skills their children have been working on throughout the summer!

SCORES Cup On Saturday, July 7th, America SCORES New York hosted its 12th annual corporate soccer tournament: the legendary SCORES Cup! Of the 40 corporate teams competing, US Bank, AT&T, and Morgan Stanley each took their respective divisional championship titles.

Celebration This was the second year that America SCORES New York took part in the YouthINC Annual Celebration to Benefit Kids. This program provides year-long support and training in developing sustainable fundraising skills

Winter Cup Winter SCORES Cup, which took place in March at Chelsea Piers, brought together 12 corporate soccer teams for an indoor tournament to riase money for America SCORES New York. Hudson Sutler took the Division 2 Cup home, while Societe Generale won Division 1!

America SCORES New York’s program expansion would not be possible without our four main fundraisers, which are supported by individual and corporate donations!

TCS New York CityMarathon Our team of five runners did an incredible job representing America SCORES New York at the TCS New York City Marathon in November. Thank you to all of our runners who made it to the finish line of the race and of their fundraising goals!

Shining a Spotlight Zachary Gomes, Program Director

Program Director Zachary Gomes has been passionate about working with young people since he was a youth himself. Beginning as a program coordinator in Albany, Gomes has traveled around the world to implement youth development programs in Cape Verde, Ukraine, Haiti, Washington DC, Moscow, and NYC! “There are few things that impact society to the degree of sports,” says Zach. “The challenge is to make sure we use sports in an intentional manner that advocates for positive social change. This is the mission of America SCORES New York.” Zach had the opportunity to attend the 2018 FIFA Foundation Festival in Moscow and be a part of movement that unites young leaders to explore the way soccer can be a tool for social change. Because of his experience there and his participation in CUNY’s Youth Studies MA program, America SCORES NY has implemented SCORES 3.0 and the importance of social justice youth development (SJYD) into our program!

Makeba, PS 153 Alum

Makeba joined America SCORES New York after coming to the US from the Ivory Coast. She was eager to get involved and became the only girl to play on the boys’ team. With strength and quiet confidence, she embraced the role of a leader and thrived on this team, all the while being open about struggles that she was having. After moving on to middle school, she learned that her new school didn’t have ASNY programming so she wrote a letter to her principal urging them to add SCORES programming at her school. Even though she herself would enjoy the programming, she is eager for so others to benefit from what our program can do and the family that exists within the America SCORES New York community. As she continues to fight for SCORES in her school, she still is eager to help at game day and watch her old team play!
