America SCORES New York 2019 Annual Report
WHO WE ARE OUR MISSION America SCORES New York was founded in 2001 to address the absence of high-quality after-school programs for underfunded public schools. We serve as a driving force in promoting fair play, self-expression, commitment and teamwork for youth in under-resourced communities in New York City. Through a unique combination of soccer, poetry and service-learning, our unique after-school program shines a spotlight on these poet-athletes, helping them develop the skills necessary to lead successful lives off the field and outside the classroom.
OUR HISTORY America SCORES was started in 1994 in Washington, DC by public school teacher Julie Kennedy, who noticed that her students had limited access to after-school activities. Ms Kennedy realized that the combination of two seemingly unrelated activities, poetry and soccer, complemented each other through mutual involvement in public performance, self-expression, and group support. The relationships that developed through teamwork and leadership on the soccer field translated to peer support in poetry workshops. The skills later allowed these poet-athletes to act as agents of change within their community through a variety of service-learning projects. The program quickly expanded throughout DC and, in 1999, Kennedy launched sites in Boston and Chicago. Today, America SCORES has a presence in 12 cities across the US and Canada: Bay Area, Chicago, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Boston, New York, Portland, Seattle, Vancouver, St. Louis, and Washington, DC.
A GLIMPSE AT
As we reflect on another year, we are so overwhelmed by the America SCORES New York milestones we've reached! We kicked off September with another beautiful #fallSCORES season that included over 800 poet-athletes, 150 soccer games, and over 400 poems written. Our autumn was filled with incredible events -- we celebrated with our America SCORES New York community at Riverbank State Park for Fall Frenzy and ended with our 15th annual Poetry SLAM at A. Phillip Randolph High School and PS 192 Jacob H Schiff, two phenomenal venues that hosted our largest and most incredible SLAMs yet. Through it all, our young people reminded us of the importance of teamwork, leadership, and commitment every step of the way. The new year brought our winter season, with program running throughout our communities as we patiently awaited warmer weather. However, the cold didn't stop our poet-athletes from achieving big things -- they performed at Winter Cup, (the first held at Columbia University's beautiful Rocco B Commisso Soccer Stadium!), they went to Massachusetts to perform poetry with their Boston Scores peers, and they united in the Bronx to celebrate Winter SCORES Day in recognition of Qatar's National Sport Day! Before we knew it, New York City began to thaw and our #springSCORES season began. Our weekly high energy game days brought our young people to fields and parks across Harlem, Inwood, Brooklyn, and the Bronx for afternoons of soccer, encapsulating the excitement of the season. In April, we launched our second poetry anthology Together, We Are at Pancakes and Poetry hosted by Home Sweet Harlem and we began preparing for one of the most exciting days of the year -- Jamboree! This season-ending celebration of soccer, service, and community brought over 800 poet-athletes to Columbia University's Baker Athletic Complex from all over the city to close out another academic year. Summer was far from boring with our Kicking it Forward Community Tournament that hosted over 100 alumni students, our annual SCORES Cup at Pier 40 with over 600 corporate athletes vying for the three divisional trophies, and our #summerSCORES programming rounding out one of our busiest years to date. As we've continued to grow to serving 1,500 poet-athletes, we have been steadfast in ensuring that our program continues to provide safe spaces for young people to exercise, express themselves, and exist freely and without judgment. Our youth feel safe participating in the America SCORES New York program, are attending school more often than their non-SCORES peers, and are feeling more confident in their contribution to their communities. We’ve made incredible strides as an organization over the first two decades of our existence and we look forward to our third decade inspiring our poet-athletes to feel safe, supported, connected and hopeful.
OUR ROAD TO
2030
There is a growing movement around utilizing sport for social change and we believe that America SCORES New York is perfectly positioned to be one of the city's leading organizations to guide communities to reach social justice for all. To ensure our organization is equipped to serve the rapid and changing needs of today's youth, we have put together an ambitious 10-year growth plan.
“America SCORES New York aims to be NYC’s leader in social justice youth development through sport, self-expression and community.” We will focus on three clear areas to ensure we are driving towards meeting our vision in 2030: 1. Programs “Build community programs to support youth through social-emotional skill development in under-resourced areas across the greater New York City region” 2. Finance “We will raise $25,000,000 across the next ten years to establish the resources for expanding our programs and team" 3. Resources “Prepare the most suitable and appropriate human resources that are required to be able to deliver the new vision strategy” Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)
Social Justice Youth Development (SJYD)
Sports Based Youth Development (SBYD)
Social and emotional learning is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
SJYD suggests that although a young person may be doing well in school, have positive self-esteem and volunteer within their community, if they lack an understanding of socio-political reality and are not provided with space to re-imagine the world around them, they have not yet fully developed.
SBYD is a subfield of youth development that focuses specifically on the positive development outcomes that can accompany an intentional, well-organized sports program. SBYD has been examined as a useful tool for helping youth heal from complex trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder.
SJYD seeks to increase the critical consciousness of young people; first by making them aware of the institutional, historical and systemic forces that may limit their opportunities, and then by leading them to collective action that focuses on changing these oppressive conditions.
Today’s youth face
A pay-to-play system that excludes young people from participating in sport, particularly those from under resourced communities
A society that consistently under values and under utilizes communities of color
An environment that strips young people of the ability to express themselves freely and without judgment
As a youth development organization operating in New York City, America SCORES New York works with students, communities and families who have been historically deprived opportunities to prosper because of their race. It is our responsibility to do what we can to break this cycle of injustice. Our unique, community based program design, our social-emotional learning foundation, and our academic and longitudinal data support sets America SCORES New York apart and provides the foundation we need to fulfill the ambitious ten-year goal we have set.

THREE PILLARS
America SCORES New York's core programming serves young people in grades 3rd through 8th and is multifaceted, compromised by year-long soccer that is supplemented by seasonal literacy and service-learning.
SOCCER We build soccer teams that meet three times a week in practice or in games, where they have the opportunity to develop our core values of teamwork, leadership, commitment, and fair play.
LITERACY Soccer teams participate in 3 hours per week of creative writing workshops to develop literacy skills, practice self-expression, and creativity and produce original works of poetry.
SERVICE-LEARNING Students use their voices developed through poetry to be stewards of their local communities through youth-led service projects.
The lynchpin of our program is when we bring the teams, families and communities all together. Our platforms provide poet-athletes more opportunities to let their voices be heard and their achievements be recognized. We empower them to work side-by-side with adults in genuine partnership, allowing the collective to make the social change in their communities.
Our core programming is supplemented by our Junior SCORES program, that serves students from K-2nd Grade, and our Kicking It Forward program, which is inclusive of all students starting in 9th grade.
Junior SCORES We have expanded our program to include a younger generation of students to provide an early introduction to poetry and soccer throughout the fall and spring seasons.
Kicking it Forward Kicking It Forward seeks to advise and prepare students for life after high school. Students collaborate to understand, develop, and utilize their passion and talents through a series of lessons, speakers, and internships. Additionally, these students get the opportunity to develop as soccer players while also creating a pathway to coaching.
SOCCER Soccer is an integral part of local cultures across the world. By using a soccer-based structure and curriculum, our staff and team build trust, engage youth in activity-based learning and create safe spaces where young people feel comfortable asking questions, sharing opinions, and supporting their teammates.
IMPACT ON SOCIAL JUSTICE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Soccer can be used to develop social-emotional learning capacities and as a tool to help young people heal from complex trauma By defining success to be a representation of teamwork, leadership, commitment and community (as opposed to the hyper-competitive, win-at-all costs mindset), ASNY intentionally uses soccer as a vehicle to build the thoughtful leaders of tomorrow
ASNY’s fair play system intentionally uses soccer as a space where young people can discuss and think critically about social justice by prioritizing the ideas of teamwork, leadership, commitment and community.

POETRY Poetry sessions provide poet-athletes with the opportunity to develop the four touchstones of language acquisition -- reading, writing, speaking, and listening -- while teaching students positive modes of self-expression and communication.
IMPACT ON SOCIAL JUSTICE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Poetry provides a vehicle for imagining a more just future for all Written and spoken word gives young people a space to think critically about the world around them and express feelings towards the oppressive social systems of racism, homophobia, and sexism that exist in their daily lives Young people are given a place to explore their identity, express their authentic selves, build self-confidence, and develop strong peer connections and adult relationships

SERVICE The elementary school poet-athletes focus on student directed service projects that address neighborhood issues identified and researched b the students themselves. The middle school service-learning component includes a financial literacy curriculum called One Hen, which guides students through the basics of starting a business and money management, as well as the importance of helping others.
IMPACT ON SOCIAL JUSTICE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
It builds on the framework of positive youth development and views young people as contributing members of society capable of making real change rather than simply “at-risk” Young people and adults join in genuine partnership; sharing power and acting together to make change in their communities Service-learning asks young people and adults to think about the root cause of challenges in their communities and empowers young people to think about structural change
