The Vision
The First and Oldest Plein Air Event in Our Area The Forgotten Coast en Plein Air, America’s Great Paint-Out, is among the most prestigious plein air events in the country and is now recognized globally. We are very honored to be so highly regarded. This year we are celebrating the 15th anniversary of the event with 20 internationally acclaimed artists who will document the landscape and culture of 100 miles of coastal towns and the people who work and live here. Their art interprets and captures this last valuable vestige of authentic Old Florida. Artistic excellence and the production of investment quality art continues to be the trademark of this 10-day invitational festival.
Art Documents Our World
As the Forgotten Coast en Plein Air event enters the next decade, the importance of creating art that captures our small part of the world is even more important. This documentation of our culture has never been more poignant as we reflect on losses of homes and businesses after Hurricane Michael. “With plein air events popping up all over the country, we realize the importance of focusing on quality and relevance,” says Forgotten Coast Cultural Coalition Board President, Joe Taylor.
Paintings With a Mission
As we do every year, our artists focus on a specific theme that celebrates the people, life, land, and coast. Each year’s programmatic focus includes lectures, art presentations, and community discussions. The collectors are offered a superb mix of subject matter and styles. One of the aspects that differentiates our plein air event from others around the country is that funds raised from the sale of art directly benefit our community. The Forgotten Coast Cultural Coalition is a charitable organization that benefits educational and community programs in our counties. We thank the artists for their generosity and giving spirit.

The event also features six “Florida’s Finest en Plein Air” artists honored as Plein Air Ambassadors; each will hold painting stations for event visitors who want to try their hand at painting. Expanded exhibits, a Collectors’ Forum, distinguished guest speakers, and surprises that will be fresh and new to the plein air community are all in the making!

Meet Our New Building! Plein Air’s Home Base
While supporting arts education in all communities of the Forgotten Coast, the Forgotten Coast en Plein Air event now has a new bricks-and-mortar presence at 201 Reid in Port St. Joe, FL. This building gives us a home office and permanent base of operation during our yearly March event (in addition to locations in Apalachicola, Carrabelle, Mexico Beach, St. George Island, Cape San Blas, and Eastpoint). This building also hosts exhibits, classes, and meeting space for the arts group The Joe Center for the Arts throughout the year. Will you help us with our capital campaign for the building? History, Organization and Purpose Paintings, relationshipbuilding and more The Forgotten Coast Cultural Coalition is a 501c3 organization whose primary activity is organizing the annual Forgotten Coast en Plein Air, America’s Paint Out. This event enhances the vitality of the local communities along Florida’s Forgotten Coast. From Mexico Beach to Alligator Point, the event depicts the natural beauty and unique culture of the Forgotten Coast.
Like many great projects, the Forgotten Coast en Plein Air started with a simple idea—inviting artists to capture the culture and beauty of the people and places of this amazing coastline. It was in 2004 when Richard Carrell first introduced the idea of a plein air event that eventually launched in 2006. Sadly, Richard only lived to see four years of plein air events, which has since grown to become one of the leading plein air events in the country. We continue to honor Richard and his wife Julia and their family for their commitment and passion. In 2010, a special collection of plein air work was donated by the invited artists that year to honor Richard Carrell and is part of the permanent art collection at Sacred Heart Hospital in Port St. Joe.
Forgotten Coast en Plein Air also allows local residents and visitors a rare opportunity—to actively engage, as volunteers and art lovers, with nationally known plein air artists from around the world.
Giving Back To Our Communities
In turn, the plein air artists donate a percentage of each painting sale to benefit the arts for the communities of the Forgotten Coast. The Forgotten Coast Coalition also provided the permanent Richard Carrell Plein Air Collection to Sacred Heart Hospital on the Gulf as well as grants for arts initiatives to many area partners. Proceeds from Forgotten Coast en Plein Air support the mission of the Forgotten Coast Cultural Coalition. By organizing cultural activities, the coalition enhances the vitality of local communities along Florida’s Forgotten Coast from Mexico Beach to Alligator Point.

POPPY BALSER Digby, Nova Scotia, Canada “I embrace the role of documentarian as an artist. Not so much in looking back to paint what was, but by painting what is here now, knowing that in a few short years the “now” I am painting will be someone else’s historical record.” Poppy Balser developed an early connection with the seashore as she studies the sea and its environs through her paintings. Her work painting the fishing industry of the Bay of Fundy, as well as her portrayal of local sailing ships, has earned her a place as a signature member of the American Society of Marine Artists. Invited Artists DAVID BOYD, JR Newnan, Georgia “As a nod to my childhood memories as well as the passing of time, I want to preserve Southern American life in its current state of decay... ‘landscapes of rust.’” David is a signature member of the Oil Painters of America and American Impressionist Society. One of the most exciting and fun events of the week, Quickdraw is a competition where all the artists must complete a finished work in a two-hour period. Every year the Forgotten Coast en Plein Air showcases the talents of some of the best artists in the Sunshine State. Their work will be highlighted in a juried exhibit and be available for sale. Florida’s Finest exhibit is also a great place to meet Florida’s finest artists.

Quickdraw More than $10,000 in prizes will be presented as five distinct awards in professional and open categories. Come see artists paint against the clock in this 2-hour painting event that’s open to anyone over the age of 14. Artists may use any medium, but must paint in the plein air tradition. Bring your own supplies and easel and paint with the pros. The registration fee is $20.00. You may also register at check-in. Checkin begins at 8 am. At check-in you will receive your number and have your blank canvas(es) stamped.
The Quickdraw Event
The 2020 Quickdraw will be held at the Mexico Beach Welcome Center, 102 Canal Parkway, Mexico Beach. The area is still recovering from Hurricane Michael, but remains a painter’s dreamscape, with pristine beaches and amazing views. You will receive a ticket to the evening reception with your participation in the quickdraw. Guest/spouse tickets can be purchased separately online also before the reception.

Register online at www.ForgottenCoastEnPleinAir.com. Open class is for painters who do not paint professionally, or earn a living as a plein air artist. Professional class is for artists who sell their work, teach workshops, and paint “en plein air” as a source of income. Artists may use any medium, but must paint in the plein air tradition. Canvases must be blank, and design work cannot begin prior to the 9 am horn.

Judging and Awards
All artists must be set up for judging by 11:30 EST. Judging will begin at 11:30 pm EST and end at 12:30 pm EST. The Quickdraw Awards are announced and ribbons are awarded at the Mexico Beach Visitor’s Center, 102 Canal Parkway. NOTE: Artists must provide their own frame if chosen for the Quickdraw Exhibit.
Reception and Exhibition
A special exhibition of 40 Quickdraw works will be selected by the event judge, Sam Knecht, and hung at the Quickdraw Reception the evening of March 21 from 6 to 8pm at the Center for History and Culture in Apalachicola. Tickets to the reception are $20.00. Your Quickdraw entry fee gets you a complimentary ticket. All paintings will be for sale. In addition, you can view and purchase works from the Florida’s Finest Collection in the same gallery. The two exhibits will remain be open to the public each day from March 22-27, 11am to 5pm and March 28 11 am to 3 pm.
Painting Sales
Each piece of artwork is required to be for sale and to have a title and price written on the provided label. Each participating artist should consider Forgotten Coast en Plein Air as his or her gallery. There will be a 50% commission collected from the proceeds of each Quickdraw sale to fund this event. Proceeds from our annual plein air event are shared with communities in Franklin and Gulf counties.
Quickdraw Schedule Saturday, March 21 8:00 am - 8:45 am EST Artists check in at the registration desk, pay (if they haven’t already), have their blank canvases stamped, and pick up their title and price label. No canvas will be stamped if painting/design has been begun prior to the starting time. Deadline for pre-registration is Thursday, March 20. 9:00 am EST A horn will signal the beginning of the event and artists begin painting en plein air style on any subject. The Quickdraw artwork must be created during the Quickdraw time frame. 11:00-noon EST The horn will signal the end of the event. Quickdraw artists bring their completed artwork and easels to the exhibit/sale area for the judging and sale. Artists are responsible for returning on time even if they are not within hearing distance of the horn.

Sam Knecht
With a career spanning four decades, Sam Knecht paints portraits and landscapes in oils, watercolor, and egg tempera. He earned his MFA degree in painting from the School of Art, University of Michigan with additional training at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Knecht’s work was brought to national attention in American Artist magazine (November, 1981) with his article on egg tempera and watercolor. In 2010 he was one of twenty contemporary artists and studios profiled in the American Artist Studios 20 publication. In 2016 Knecht was awarded Signature Status by the Portrait Society of America. Society hosted Awards in Members Only competitions include First Place Aqueous Media in 2009. Knecht’s largest commission work, “The Signing of the American Constitution” hangs in the Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship” in Washington D. C. Knecht divides his energies between plein air and studio. He began outdoor painting seriously during his teens at the family cottage on a wilderness lake in northern Ontario. He has painted in Italy, France, Mexico, and most of the Midwest states, especially as a life-long resident of Michigan. Now an Emeritus Professor of Art at Hillsdale College, he has taught there since 1973. He chaired its Department of Art for 35 years. See his work at www.knechtstudio.com.

Residency Exhibits and Presentations
Stories that make up the culture of the Forgotten Coast are documented through art. This year, three of our returning Plein Air artists spent time documenting key elements of our Forgotten Coast heritage. These artists immersed themselves in their assigned topics and together have produced an amazing body of work. They will present their work at separate receptions, where their work will be hung from March 20-27. See below for times and locations. On March 27, the works will be moved to the Wet Room in Port St. Joe and be available for viewing and purchase until 3 pm March 29.
“The Infectious Creativity of Change” by Mark Shasha

“The Roots of Black Leadership on the Forgotten Coast” by Kendall Portis
Steve Jobs said that “creativity is connecting things.” Mark’s residency will explore the connection of elements in the Forgotten Coast, such as climate change and the morphing coastal culture. Riffing on the theme that necessity is the mother of invention, Mark will illustrate how change sparks creativity. Through interviews of biologists, architects, seafood workers, city planners, and other integral, but seemingly unconnected, parts of the community, Mark synthesizes how creative thinking, and its infectious nature, can build stronger community infrastructure, both metaphorically and physically.
Vicki’s residency was inspired by the music and musicians of the Forgotten Coast. From dark bars, sunlit churches, and school classrooms, the music that ebbs and flows throughout life in the region offers a rich and varied soundtrack of gospel, choir, classical, jazz, folk, and rock. “Music is this beautiful, invisible web that runs through all parts of the community,” says Vicki. Her paintings explore the way that music connects individuals with their community, their family, and their God. Vicki’s residency work reveals the shared principles of composition, movement, pitch, balance, and rhythm and how they apply to both music and painting.
Education, religion, athletics, and neighborhood boundaries helped create strong bonds in the African American communities of the Forgotten Coast. These foundations developed community leaders, some who remained at home, uplifting their local neighborhoods, as well as others who went out into the world to become noteworthy in other ways. Kendall’s residency provides a visual narrative into these accomplishments through personal portraits, neighborhood architecture, and family activities that reveal stories of dedication, richness, and culture.

Quickdraw: Mexico Beach The 2020 Quickdraw will be held in Mexico Beach this year, featuring a wide range of exceptional subject matter sure to challenge and delight all artists. Artists may choose from a wide range of pristine beach scenes as well as locations of recovery as the town continues to rebuild after Hurricane Michael. All completed work will be displayed for judging and sales. Enjoy live music and beautiful scenery at the reception that evening. You will receive a free ticket to the reception with your participation in the quickdraw. Guest/spouse tickets can be purchased separately online before the reception. The paintings are literally “wet” as they are often completed just hours before arrival. The Wet Room features the work of all invited artists. Painting displays change by the hour. Art collectors arrive daily to make their selections from the most recent deliveries. Collectors form across the country can watch the online gallery where each painting is photographed and posted to the website. Award-winning artist, Peggi Kroll-Roberts, was trained at Arizona State University and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. Peggi worked as a fashion and advertising illustrator before making the transition into fine art. Using intense color and value to accentuate her subject, she moved into fine art with a bold palette, a love for small paintings and a very loose style that achieves a lot with a few very energetic brush strokes. Faculty Don Andrews Don Andrews is a nationally known watercolor artist and workshop instructor. He is a graduate of Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida and a resident of Bastrop, Texas. Don is an active member and past board director of the American Watercolor Society. His paintings have received numerous awards in national watercolor competitions including three awards from the American Watercolor Society. Don has conducted painting workshops throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and Europe for over 30 years. Don is the author of the books, Interpreting the Figure in Watercolor, Interpreting the Landscape in Watercolor and Rough Sketches: Short Stories of a Traveling Artist. He has also created two DVD sets that follow his figure and landscape workshop curriculum as well as his DVD, Making Watercolor Glow taken from his original video. Nancie King Mertz A life-long painter, Nancie produces more than 150 oil and pastel paintings annually. You’ll find her work on Chicago-based television, on her website and in her Chicago gallery. Her work is based on plein air travels across Europe, China and the US and she is known for her urban scenes. She’s been named a Master Circle and Eminent Pastelist with IAPS, having won the Prix de Pastel and their Gold & Silver awards. She teaches workshops for PSA in New York as well as demos for their Materials Fair. Plein Air Magazine, Pastel Journal and The Artists’ Magazine have published feature stories on her work and she has juried several painting competitions. She’s a faculty member of IAPS and PACE, teaches globally, has videos through Liliedahl. Born and raised in Perth, Leon’s career started with a wide range of artistic fields including printmaking, graphic design, art direction, illustration and photography. Since 2003, Leon is a professional artist painting outdoors in the style of impressionistic realism, just like the old masters did and he is honored to have one of his paintings hanging amongst Dutch masterpieces in the Katwjik Museum in Holland. Leon works quickly when capturing natural light and color and used his outdoor sketches as reference when creating larger works in his home studio in Mandurah. Faculty Terry Miura After graduating from Art Center College of Design in 1990, Terry Miura headed out to New York City to pay his dues. He began his career as a freelance illustrator, creating imagery for such clients as Time, Newsweek, Rollingstone, and Sports Illustrated, to name a few. Miura’s evocative tonalist landscapes explore the relationship between memory, emotions, and identity. Out in the field, Miura paints en plein air to collect visual information. Back in the studio, these sketches are used as jumping off points for further exploration and development of larger studio works. But it was 2009 when she found a home in painting oils en plein air. “I call myself a “Nostalgic Impressionist” as a way of identifying the subjects and style of painting which interest me the most. Kathie resides with her husband and maintains a studio in Knoxville, Tennessee. She travels extensively and spends much of her time oil painting in the great outdoors. James Richards James Richards (AIS) is an American Impressionist painter who specializes in oils. He was born and raised in rural Georgia and spent the days of his youth exploring the farms, fields and forests of his hometown. Driven by a passionate connection with nature and a deep sense of obligation to relay his vision in the most truthful manner possible, he began painting at a very young age; by the time he was a young adult living in Athens, GA, he had already won numerous awards for his pieces. James has spent years studying the nuances of paint and developing a keen sense of understanding and control over the medium. He is now regarded as one of the top oil painters and instructors in the country. He considers teaching and sharing his knowledge to be his primary purpose and true calling as an artist. Dawn Whitelaw Dawn Whitelaw is one of the artists in residence at On Track Studios in Franklin, Tennessee. Whitelaw is currently on the faculty of the Peninsula School of Art in Door County, Wisconsin and the Portrait Society of America where she holds the office of Vice Chairman. She received Second Place awards in the Door County Plein Air Festival in both 2014 and 2015. In recent years she has also won awards in the Olmsted Plein Air, Piedmont Plein Air Paint out and Plein Air Richmond. The American Impressionist Society recently elected her to Master status and invited her to judge their 19th annual National Juried exhibition. Recent awards include American Art Collector’s Master Award of Excellence 2017 and the Master’s Award of Excellence AIS Small works Showcase 2017. Whitelaw was one of 10 American women invited to exhibit in “Inspiring Figures” at the Butler Museum of American Art. Tara Will Tara started working in plein air in 2014, building a portfolio to apply for juried events. Working in pastels, using bold, colorful, expressive marks, Tara seeks to capture the “essence” of her subjects. She earned her “Master Pastellist” designation from the International Association of Pastel Societies in 2018, and has exhibited in London, China, Canada, and across the US. Since first working in plein air, Tara has fallen in love with painting outside. Beautiful light, endless subject matter, and vibrant colors provide endless inspiration. Her goal is to provide students the tools they need to find their own voice, and be more confident in their work. She focuses on color, markmaking, and composition to achieve this.
