The Vision
Preserving Florida’s Natural Resources Through the Plein Air Tradition Plein air artists celebrate a long history of advocacy for preservation and environmental education. Highlighting the invited artists’ commitment to painting outdoors, two veteran Forgotten Coast artists, Mary
Erickson and Lori Putnam, spent extended weeks as artists in residence in the yearsince the 10th anniversary event. Erickson engaged her plein air talent and her interest in land conservation, examining the issues surrounding coastal land management with the St. Joseph Bay State Buffer Preserve. Putnam spent her days on Apalachicola Bay researching the challenges involved in oyster reef restoration and capturing those experiences with plein air studies, sketches and detailed notes. Both artists have taken those experiences, their studies, and their love for this region to build exhibitions and featured presentations highlighting their residencies. These are the first of a series of residencies that will enable artists and the community to explore challenges through the plein air process and the inspiration of the resulting paintings.
Meaning and purpose is instilled in each activity over the 10 days. As the Forgotten Coast en Plein Air
event moves into a second decade of documenting our changing coastline, organizers have initiated a multi year plan which strategically examines the reasons why plein air painting is important, as well as how the process and the paintings contribute to a region’s resilience. This year focuses on the t natural environment, with an emphasis on highlighting land conservation, habitat restoration and environmental stewardship. In 2017, the event will feature the region’s rich culture and heritage, focusing on human capacity and storytelling through plein air painting. The third segment in 2018 will celebrate the built environment. This humanmade space in which people live, work, and recreate will showcase architecture, streetscapes, working waterfronts, and historic sites. While each year will have a programmatic focus for the purpose of examination in the series of lectures, presentations and discussions, the collectors can be ensured that the paintings will be a superb mix of subject matter and styles. Our organizers are committed to prioritizing artistic excellence and building historic relevance for this last vestige of “Old Florida” within the modern plein air movement. The art produced is highly sought after and continues to grow in value, providing distinctive content and benefit to all involved. Each artist is trusted to uphold the event’s standards and they, in turn, hold themselves accountable as a group. They support one another and encourage each other to transcend. The organizers are very proud of the funds which have been raised to support the arts in the three county region; that is very good. But in their eyes, success and financial support has come as a result of focusing on this higher purpose. For them, it is creating an environment where the artists are inspired and supported to do their best work. In turn, the artists are helping build a legacy for the region. Eight communitiesacross three counties come together through this celebration of the arts, leaving the community stronger and more resilient after each event. Artists, collectors, volunteers and attendees have all became friends that come and go in one another’s lives throughout the entire year. The relationships that have been initiated at the Forgotten Coast event are ongoing. Lastly, the artists share their talent with the general public and area youth. They make fine art accessible for many who would never have known what “plein air” means. They teach workshops and hold demonstrations which stimulate economic activity for the region. Local artists are engaged to volunteer and provide professional services in support of the effort. All of these things are more significant and have more impact than money can buy and awards can recognize. The organizers are humbled and grateful to our decade of artists, collectors, and supporters. 2

The History
Event Founder, Richard Carrell Entering the second decade, Forgotten Coast en Plein Air honors the founder’s original vision, documenting the Forgotten Coast in the Plein Air tradition. “This area is so lovely; don’t you wish you could
paint?” That was how Richard Carrell introduced the idea of a nationally recognized plein air event at a dinner party. It was 2004 and the area was going through a huge real estate boom. “What if we invited artists to paint the area?” The whimsical idea of capturing the Forgotten Coast before it was the “Disappeared Coast” was grabbing some traction. Carrell, the source of this seemingly fanciful notion, took notes at some of America’s premiere plein air locations such as Carmel, California and Old Lyme, Connecticut. He consulted with representatives from Plein Air Painters of America and visited artists from central Florida to northeast Maine introducing his idea. Knowing he would need to ensure the artists it would be worth their time to come to this unknown market, Carrell approached The St. Joe Company in 2005. With the specific assistance of John Hendry, St. Joe embraced the vision and pledged their commitment to start the St. Joe Collection. And so over lunch at the home of Richard and Julia Carrell, the idea of an annual plein air event was launched to a room of dedicated volunteers in 2006. While Richard only lived to see four years of plein air events, his ideas became a mantra as the event continued to grow and is now recognized as one of the leading plein air events in the country. Richard Carrell envisioned all of this. Always debonair in his bow tie, he knew the potential but would caution on staying true to the key points: document the area, strive for excellence, and promote arts education. The events honor Richard, his wife, Julia, and their family for this sustained commitment. Organizers believe Richard would be proud of his vision today.

The plein air event was initiated under the umbrella of the Gulf Alliance for Local Arts in 2006 and the Forgotten Coast Cultural Coalition was incorporated as an independent non-profit 501c3 organization in 2008. The mission of the Forgotten Coast Cultural Coalition is to enhance the vitality of local communities along Florida’s Forgotten Coast from Mexico Beach to Alligator Point through cultural activities. Specifically, its objectives are to organize regional cultural events to benefit local communities; to empower the local organizations to be participating partners; to manage cultural event proceeds to benefit local non-profit organizations to ensure their health and vitality; and to reach out to a broad-based, multi-community, multi-generational audience. Its primary activity is organizing the annual Forgotten Coast en Plein Air, America’s Paint-Out, in May which provides local residents and visitors an opportunity to actively engage, as volunteers and as art lovers, with nationally known plein air artists. In turn, the artists donate a percentage of each sale to benefit arts education for the local communities who make their annual visit successful. The Coalition has provided the permanent Richard Carrell Plein Air Collection to Sacred Heart Hospital on the Gulf and grants for arts initiatives to many area partners. In 2015, a series of artist residencies began, focusing on the plein air process and the exhibition of plein air paintings as a means to build stronger communities.

Invited Artists GREG BARNES Charlotte, NC Greg Barnes, a 1985 fine art graduate of Wake Forest, lives and works out of Charlotte, North Carolina. He favors plein air painting with pastels for its vibrancy, spontaneity, and impressionistic qualities. His work can be found at Karis Gallery in Hilton Head SC and at Coconut Grove Gallery & Design in Miami FL. DAVID BOYD, JR.
Newnan, GA David Boyd, Jr. received his BFA from SCAD in 1995 and has been teaching art at The Heritage School since. His obsession with oil began with a plein air workshop by Millie Gosch and he has been receiving accolades since. Boyd’s work was selected for Oil Painters of America Regional Shows in 2010 and 2013 and an American Impressionist National Exhibition in 2012, but he also enjoys the competition and camaraderie of plein air events. Boyd is a member of OPA, AIS and shows his work online with DailyPaintWorks.com and DailyPainters.com. LUKE BUCK Nineveh, IN Luke Buck grew up in Indiana with a love for life, art, and nature that is evident in his nostalgic paintings of American landscapes and wildlife. Luke studied figure drawing at the John Heron Art Institute but most of Luke’s art education and influence came from his artist father, Harold Buck, with whom he shared a studio with for many years. Buck’s talents have won him numerous honors and awards through the years and his unique talents as an artist have earned him a strong following among art enthusiasts and his paintings are included in collections in every state in the United States and worldwide. Invited Artists KATIE DOBSON CUNDIFF Bradenton, FL Katie Cundiff acquired an early appreciation for the fine arts, drawing and painting under the tutelage of her father, Steve Gaston Dobson, an accomplished Chicago illustrator. Cundiff’s early work earned her awards including a full scholarship in 1968 to the famed Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, FL. Over the past 30 years, she and her husband have managed their own businesses, designing and producing sculptures. Painting almost exclusively from life or “en plein air”, Cundiff has traveled with her solo exhibition, “Painting Paradise” Florida Landscapes at the Turn of the 21st Century. CHARLES DICKINSON St. Augustine, FL Charles Dickinson, a Connecticut native, has been a professional plein air artist for more than 36 years. He graduated from the Paier School of Art in Hamden, CT and garnered a scholarship for two years of study at the Lyme Academy of Fine Art in Old Lyme, CT. In his words, “My goal as an artist is to produce lasting works of fine art that reflect my love of nature.” Dickinson’s pieces are on display at IBM, The St. Joe Company, Jupiter Medical Center/Foshay Cancer Center, Sacred Heart Hospital, Hank Williams Museum, Flagler College, Hallmark, Bank of America, the collection of Ambassador Andrew Young, and the Government building in Aviles, Spain. Marshville, NC “It is not enough that we leave only paintings and photographs of what once was. My residence in NC is slated to be left as a bird sanctuary and artist retreat, a place to listen to the wind and birdsong, to return to our roots as part of a greater whole.” Raised in CT, conservationist Mary Erickson has been painting professionally since 1993 and maintains studios in FL and NC. Working on location, Erickson captures the essence of the coastal landscape. Her paintings have garnered numerous awards and hang in many private and corporate collections. She is a Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists and has exhibited with the American Impressionist Society, the Oil Painters of America, the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, and the National Arts Club. Venice, FL C As a 1980 graduate of The Ringling School of Art and Design, Bill Farnsworth spent more than 30 years garnering a national reputation as an illustrator and fine artist in Connecticut. Today, as a Signature member of The Oil Painters of America, American Society of Marine Artists, and NOAPS, his paintings have won awards and appeared in many national shows and private collections throughout the United States. San Diego, CA An architect for 35 years, Mark Fehlman started painting in 2000 and within 5 years started a new career as an artist. Trained under many, the two most influential teachers were Ray Roberts and John Asaro. Like them, Fehlman is equally comfortable in figurative and landscape subjects that feature strong composition, well defined value relationships, and vibrant color. He has won numerous awards, including the LPAPA 2014 Best of Plein Air and has been included in many shows and museums. LEON HOLMES Perth, W. Australia Leon Holmes lives and works at opposite ends of the earth. His life passion of art has been extensive and versatile with careers in print making, advertising art direction, illustration, graphic design, and of course, oil painting. Recently awarded as a 2014 finalist at the Noordwijik Invitational in Holland, this respected lecturer of painting is represented by galleries in Australia and Amsterdam and is in corporate and private collections worldwide. “There’s no need to think up the subject matter for a painting. Bellows Falls, VT Charlie Hunter was raised in the house built by his great great great grandfather, majored in art at Yale University, and spent the early part of his career as a graphic designer. He has won numerous awards for his distinctive, near-monochromatic work in water-miscible oil and has said, “My goal is to paint beautifully that which is not traditionally considered beautiful” to which Richard Schmid in Alla Prima II responds, “If it is within the realm of human evolution to allow one individual to possess the gift of a natural sense of design then Charlie Hunter is certainly the lucky winner.” Curiously, his cats remain unimpressed. DEBRA HUSE Costa Mesa, CA Debra Huse uses rich color and bold fluid strokes to capture the light and drama in her oil paintings. Milwaukee, WI Shelby Keefe is an award-winning painter, teacher and performance artist. Siloam Springs, AR John P. Lasater IV developed a love for art working as a designer and illustrator for a division of Hallmark Cards. Fine art was a natural transition after years of study and practice. John now paints full time, both from his studio in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, and on the road painting “en plein air.” He also teaches workshops. John’s honors include national plein air painting awards, artist-in-residencies, feature articles in both Southwest Art and Plein Air Magazine, and mentions in art magazines including Art of the West, Southwest Art, International Artist, and Plein Air Magazine. Chicago, IL Chicago artist, Nancie King Mertz, is a Master Signature member of Pastel Society of America , a Master Signature member of Chicago Pastel Painters, a Master Circle Member of the International Assoc. of Pastel Societies, and a member of Oil Painters of America. She has work in corporate and private collections worldwide and has won numerous awards in oil & pastel shows. Altamonte Springs, FL Morgan Samuel Price’s career began as an illustrator, but in 1972 she focused on becoming a fine artist. Her motivation to paint is energized by the light as it flows across the scene, seeing it as a tool to explore the visual pleasure of the movement over the objects. Capturing that movement sets the time of day. Retaining that choice of actual time creates the plausible illusion. The painting is never about the subject; it is about the physical sensation of temperature. Her 40-year career as an artist has been sustained by an overwhelming desire to elevate each moment with uplifting thought and to share this through painting and teaching. LORI PUTNAM
Charlotte, TN Lori Putnam’s paintings are a personal response to her subject. She travels worldwide creating studies in oil that later serve as catalysts for larger works created in her Tennessee studio. One of the top Impressionists of our time, Putnam focuses on patterns, rhythms, and color harmonies in the natural landscape. Invited Artists JAMES RICHARDS Tucker, GA James Richards was born in rural Georgia and with a love for the outdoors, began painting landscapes at a young age. JASON SACRAN Fort Smith, AR Jason Sacran has a BFA in painting from Tennessee Tech University, and credits towards an MFA from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Jason and his family live in Fort Smith, Arkansas, where he was the curator for the Fort Smith Art Center for almost three years. In 2010 Jason became a full-time artist/painter, and part-time instructor for the University of Arkansas Fort Smith. Jason is also the Arkansas state ambassador for the Portrait Society of America. HODGES SOILEAU Venice, FL Hodges Soileau has had a successful 25 year illustration career, his art gracing the covers of more than 300 book covers, and as a long-standing member of the prestigious Society of Illustrators in NY. Now, however, he paints subjects that are of personal interest. Soileau has had many shows throughout the US and has received awards in Oil Painters of America and International Portrait Competition exhibitions. Florida’s Finest Ambassadors RANDY PITTS Jacksonville, FL Randy Pitts graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of South Florida in 1982. Following a career in the commercial arts, he began his artistic pursuit of painting en Plein Air in 2004. His paintings have won numerous awards in local and regional shows, most notably receiving the Artists’ Choice Award at the 9th Annual Wekiva Paint Out in March of 2015. LARRY MOORE JOSEPH PALMERIO Sarasota, FL Joseph Palmerio is a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Barnes Foundatio. Palmerio studied sculpture at the Frudakis Academy, and metal sculpture at Tyler School of Art. The Painting Stations Forgotten Coast en Plein Air is committed to everyone getting a chance to join in the plein air excitement. Quickdraw
More than $10,000 in prizes will be presented as five distinct awards in both professional and open categories. The 2016 Quickdraw will be held in George Core Park in Port St. Joe, featuring a wide range of exceptional subject matter sure to challenge and delight all artists. Artists may choose the recently restored lighthouse, the waterfront trail and park, or the vibrant Reid Avenue downtown corridor just a few blocks away. The Quickdraw will begin at the Lighthouse located at 200 Miss Zola’s Drive. All completed work will be displayed around the adjacent stage for judging and sales. Enjoy live music and great food from one of the many excellent cafes located within a short distance from the festivities. Artists are encouraged to pre-register online, registration is a $10 fee. Deadline for pre-registration is noon on Friday, May 6. Artists may use any medium, but must paint in the plein air tradition. Artists will gather on Saturday, May 7 starting at 8:00 am to check in, have their 20
blank canvases stamped, and pick up their title and price label. No canvas will be stamped if painting has been begun prior to the starting time. The artwork must be created during the Quickdraw time frame. At 10 am, a horn will sound and artists may begin painting en plein air style on any subject. At 12 noon, the horn will sound again and the Quickdraw artists bring their just completed artwork and easels to the exhibit area for the judging and sale. The Quickdraw Awards will be presented in from the stage at approximately 1 pm. Jean Stern, Executive Director of the Irvine Museum will be the judge. In honor of the 11th year of the event, a special exhibition of forty Quickdraw works will be selected and hung in the Reid Avenue Gallery as a feature of the event. Seafood Heritage Collection: Highlighting Oyster Reef Restoration
The plight of Apalachicola Bay’s oyster industry, the restoration process, and the people who work the bay is examined through a selection of work by Lori Putnam. Putnam has been drawn to the subjects for the 9 years she has been invited to paint in the event. This Spring, she spent a week investigating the issues with her paints, brushes and sketchbook in hand. This exhibition celebrates the region’s maritime history. The Wetroom: Art Fresh Off the Easel
A unique feature to the Forgotten Coast event is a fully functioning Wetroom which sells paintings as quickly as the artists deliver them to the check in station. The paintings are literally “wet” as they are often completed just hours before arrival. The Wetroom features the work of all 21 invited artists. The paintings change by the hour and often art collectors arrive daily to make their selections from the most recent deliveries. Collectors from across the country watch the online gallery where each painting is photographed and posted immediately to the website. Masters Gallery: Inspired Paintings
On the second floor of the Wetroom, the collector will find a selection of fine studio works inspired by plein air studies completed in the Forgotten Coast event. Conservation Collection: Examining Coastal Habitat Management
Preserving and restoring coastal environments was the focus for Mary Erickson last October. She spent a week with fellow artists, environmental experts and community volunteers learning about prescribed fire, longleaf pine restoration and hydrology. This exhibit honors the work and mission of the Buffer Preserve and the professionals committed to environmental stewardship. Armed with just an idea, Gloria Austin, working with Ann Comforter and Anna Maria Cannatella, contacted local schools to see if there were children interested in the visual arts. When invited plein air artists were asked if they would be willing to assist, the response was so overwhelming, there were more artists than children. Several artists revealed that their own experiences with an artist mentor had turned their whole world around and they have been painting ever since. This was their way to give back to the community who hosts them each year. On Tuesday, May 15, 2007, a group of 17 students met their mentor artists in Lafayette Park, Apalachicola, to begin the first Student Art Day on the Forgotten Coast. Each of the artists spent several hours with their young artist. Sandy Hodges of Port St. Joe teamed up with Oregon artist, Gene Costanza. When asked what she thought, her first response was “Wow!” Can you believe he took the time to show me all of this… Look at the picture I painted…I just love it.” Now a decade later, the Student Art Day is a tradition. Last year’s activity on St.

George Island was a huge success with over 30 students benefitting from this special experience. “For me, it is the most special day of the event,” remarks Joe Taylor, Event Chair. The public is encouraged to attend and watch the students paint and then share a community lunch with the artists and students.

with Mark Fehlman, Debra Huse and Greg LaRock These three West Coast talents bring a unique perspective on plein air painting to the Forgotten Coast. On Monday May 2, from 7 to 8:30 pm, enjoy a lecture and slideshow on the influences and inspirations of west coast plein air artists. The group will cover simplification through color, compositional design and beauty in the brushwork. Each day a master will give a demo. Fehlman will focus on color and simplicity, LaRock will discuss composition and eye direction, and Huse will coach on “Laying it down and leaving it alone.” Each afternoon all three instructors will be providing instruction and individual assistance at each student’s easel. May 16-19 Historic Apalachicola, Florida Plein Air organizations and painting groups across the South are coming together to host the first ever “Plein Air South” regional gathering, May 16-19, 2016 in Apalachicola, Florida. Attendees will find 4 days of presentations, demonstrations, instruction, and of course, painting outdoors lead by many of the industry’s leading artists and experts. Over thirty organizations, artists, and volunteers are working together to make this a reality. We are thankful to the steering committee, the many volunteers, Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, Visit Florida and the Forgotten Coast Cultural Coalition for their commitment to initiate this annual gathering of the Southeastern plein air community. palachicola is in the center of Florida’s A Forgotten Coast, halfway between Tallahassee and Panama City. The small historic city was established in 1822, incorporated in 1831, and still maintains the original city plan to this day. The City and the surrounding region offer a wealth of painting opportunities architecture, maritime culture, natural resources, and a vibrant downtown. The town is roughly 1.8 miles square and very walkable. There are excellent restaurants and shops to enjoy.

Plein Workshops Air South Presenters Dominic Avant Dominic Avant received a scholarship at the Rhode Island School of Design and completed my BFA in illustration and after graduation worked as a freelance illustrator and teacher. In 1996 he was recruited by Walt Disney Feature Animation. Since 2003, Avant has been painting and teaching workshops, mainly working in oils on figurative and landscape subjects. Because of his passion for plein air painting, he uses a strong play of light and color to create drama. This impressionistic use of color and light set on a foundation of academic drawing builds a nice marriage between Impressionism and Realism. www.dominicavant.com David Boyd, Jr. David grew up in a small town outside of Atlanta, at a time when the suburbs of Atlanta were still “out in the country.” After moving to Savannah for college, Boyd began studying architecture, then graphic design and finally art history and illustration at Savannah college of Art and Design. He graduated with a BFA in Illustration in 1995. Boyd painted his first painting during this time, focusing on the moonlight through the live oaks of Savannah’s Washington Avenue. He teaches about eight workshops per year, nationally and internationally. He is known as a skilled, positive instructor and motivator with a sense of humor. He is represented by the fine galleries of Legacy in Jackson Hole, Bozeman, and Scottsdale; Reiser Fine Art in Carmel; and Reinert Fine Art in Charleston and Blowing Rock. Dee Beard Dean Dee is a nationally-recognized artist who has been painting since childhood. She was raised in the countryside of northern Indiana and began her formal studies at Kendall College of Art and Design, and the New York Academy of Art. In her early years, Dee was a well-known fashion designer, manufacturing her own clothing line which sold to over 450 stores throughout the US. Dee and her husband Nicolai host annual International Art Trips, recently to Portugal and Provence. She resides in Charleston, South Carolina with her husband, Dr. Nicolai Chalfa. Mary Erickson Mary Erickson studied at the University of Bridgeport and Sacred Heart University, and initially worked in small business management. Erickson’s passion for painting, and a move to Florida in 1986 stirred the desire to pursue art as a career. She realized a long held dream, and in 1993, Mary began painting professionally. A lifelong conservationist, Mary’s 39 acre residence in North Carolina is slated to be left as an artist retreat and bird sanctuary. Richard’s purpose in painting is to provoke the viewer to interact with his pieces. His paintings are his voice, and stroke by stroke, he composes a whole that relates his vision. Joseph Paquet Joseph Paquet, while pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the School of Visual Arts in New York, had the good fortune of finding a mentor in John Foote who opened his eyes to the joys of drawing the human figure. Paquet experienced a demanding and rewarding apprenticeship, in which he learned to fuse field studies with the image he could see in his mind’s eye. Paquet is a Signature Member of the Plein Air Painters of America, The Salmagundi Club and an Out-of-State Artist Member of the California Art Club. www.joepaquet.com Morgan Samuel Price Morgan Samuel Price’s career began in 1968 with Hallmark Cards as an illustrator, but in 1972, she focused on becoming a fine artist. Her motivation to paint is energized by the light as it flows across the scene. Morgan sees light as a tool to explore the visual pleasure of the movement over the objects. Capturing that movement sets the time of day. Retaining that choice of actual time creates the plausible illusion. The painting is never about the subject; it is about the physical sensation of temperature. Jason Sacran has a BFA in painting from Tennessee Tech University, and credits towards an MFA from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Jason and his family live in Fort Smith, Arkansas, where he was the curator for the Fort Smith Art Center for almost three years. In 2010 Jason became a full-time artist/painter, and part-time instructor for the University of Arkansas Fort Smith. Jason is also the Arkansas state ambassador for the Portrait Society of America. He has had several exhibitions and been awarded many times for his works and achievements. Phil Sandusky Phil Sandusky is a contemporary plein air, impressionist landscape painter and figure painter. A New Orleans resident since 1984, he is represented by the Cole Pratt Gallery in New Orleans, LA, and the Stellers Gallery in Jacksonville, FL. In addition to his prolific artistic output, Sandusky teaches landscape and life painting at New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts, has authored three books published by Pelican Publishing Company, and has written numerous articles for national and regional art magazines. She frequently holds workshops and exhibits, including a show at the Huntsville Museum of Art. A member of Plein Air Painters of the Southeast, American Impressionist Society, and Portrait Society of America, Whitelaw recently had a painting accepted into the permanent collection of the Rahr-West Art Museum. “Painter friends often ask me how I can take time from commissions and studio work to paint outside.
