did you know #bored is used 64.037.438 times on instagram?

hey, hi, hello,

Stop scrolling and put down your phone. We’re glad you’ve picked us up and started to read. Boredom has changed. Our parents used to be bored because they had nothing to do. We’re bored because we have too many things to do – and we’re not absorbing a single one of them. Today’s five official stages of boredom range from being a content couch potato to going absolutely bananas, wishing you could escape to an otherworldy place. mondaze explores the various stages of the bored mind, relieving you from whichever state you may be in through five different chapters. Filled with stimulating, offbeat and clever content, mondaze is here to embolden you with its striking perspective on fashion and culture. Alluring interviews with our favourite artists and designers, a different look on classic beauty ideals, exploring the non-washing trend and surprising photo shoots with crazy combinations of shapes, textures and prints – that’s what you’ll find in mondaze. It’s okay to be bored. mondaze shows just how productive boredom can make you. If you tilt your head, we’ve done our job. Let mondaze be your ally. Welcome to the first edition of mondaze, the 11th magazine concept of the Amsterdam Fashion Institute.

Someone worth meeting: Carolyn Strauss (46). Founder of slowLab, an expert in the field of Slow design and above all a greatly inspiring woman who shares her personal thoughts on how to live your

Take a slower view on life “It is not my goal to change anyone, but Slow can be such a relief for people. Adjusting is hard, especially when the world around you has not changed yet, but people need to realise that, just like fast, Slow is a speed, and a quality. It’s a mental attitude of how you can be and act in the world. The fast world is not necessarily all-bad, the bad part is just how it is dominating everything we are doing.” “In the fashion world fast is referring to ‘fast fashion’ with its totally unsustainable large-scale production and consumption. The fact is that our world is increasingly complex, and we need to have Slow

knowledge as well as fast knowledge. This way you can navigate your way through all of the different experiences that you will encounter in your lifetime. People only now understand that society has to change since we are almost out of resources. A slower view is not about just one garment, it is about understanding these bigger issues and solving problems. So how can you think of the role that fashion can play? A role that is much greater than making

the longest recorded flight of a chicken was 13 seconds

“I think that fashion, as creative and exciting as it is, has the ability to inspire and engage people to follow new trends that doesn’t necessarily have to do anything with clothing. You can use it to call attention to something greater, stimulating people to Slow down and take a different view. A lot of people see Slow design as something limiting, they think it only means that you can buy less clothes, while in fact it can actually be really enlightening and joyful.”

“I wanted to do something with these feelings and in 2003 I founded slowLab my own company, to make others aware of the importance of Slow. I started to invite people to open dialogue with me so I could learn and understand more about Slow design. Soon, as more projects and people got involved, my closest colleagues and I felt that we did not want slowLab to be prescriptive. slowLab had to be an open framework with examples. With the six design principles (reveal, expand, reflect, engage, participate and evolve) we wanted to say: ‘These are ways into thinking about Slow design, but they are not a fixed framework’. Now, more than a decade later, we learned even more than we had hoped for. Because of all our experiences and projects we can now confidently say which projects are Slow designed and which are not.”

Future prospects of the world, fashion and slowLab “Nowadays, people are waking up everywhere, society has changed and

the page has turned. For me it is really exciting to see that the world is so open to change and Slow design can be part of it. Cultivating it in your own life will make you more aware of your decisions. For example, I bought a jacket at Uniqlo some years ago. Of course I’m aware of that not being Slow – from the standpoint of the unsustainable scale and speed of production and consumption a company like Uniqlo perpetuates –, but when I bought it I knew I would use it for a long time and wear it a lot. Even when you’ll cultivate it in your life just a little and share that with others, you’re already making a change.” >>

35 hit the brakes

The birth of slowLab “I think the most important part of Slow philosophy is about being aware and making conscious choices. When I became pregnant 16 years ago, it hit me that I had to take care of my body and this new person and that was a big thing for me. It was a direct experience of: ‘I am not alone, there are other people who directly depend on me’.”

“With slowLab we give a lot of workshops. I enjoy these the most when I feel like my work is inspiring to someone and that what I do has an effect on some level. It is meaningful for me that the information I give is being integrated in someone’s life, to an extent that I do not need to know about. I have to trust that I’m just here to share the knowledge, tools and values that I believe in and then everyone can have their own journey.”

the raw and the Dirty WORDS BY SOFIA GIOSTRELLI

Stop drugging your hair and the denim you wear. As much as we love our freshly washed jeans and our clean coupes, overdosing on shampoo and detergent will eventually kill them. Here, mondaze explores

We’ve all been there; “I don’t feel like showering today” or “Laundry day? How about no?!” There’s no shame in admitting our sporadic day-off from anything that entails the activity of washing. As much as washing should be encouraged, to avoid funky body odors and not having to resort to wearing your bikini bottoms, thankfully there are certain things better off unwashed, namely raw denim and your hair. With the rising popularity of raw denim and its increasing affordability, we are running out of excuses to avoid giving our washing machine and jeans a welldeserved break. Similarly, there seems to be an emerging tendency of rocking the dirty look with your hair, keeping it away from shampoo. In case some of you are still not familiar with the phenomenon: raw denim is unwashed, which means that there’s more indigo dye and starch. It is recommended to keep your jeans out of the washing machine for the first year to refrain the jeans from shrinking, losing all its dye and turning light blue. This dye will gradually fade in places that crease easily due to high usage, such as in the crotch, the back of

the ‘non washing’ trend.

ur how to not wash yo

hair

1.

For starters, the most popular and easy substitute is dry-shampoo. While you rinse normal shampoo off, dry shampoo has the same effect as normal shampoo in terms of getting that freshly washed hair scent. However, another similarity between the two is the chemicals they both carry, but it hasn’t proven to be as ‘bad’ for you as regular shampoo.

2.

Number two: baby powder. Yes, that’s right. When you are having oily days, just take some baby powder in your hands and run it into your scalp, but be careful you rub it well, you don’t want to look like a grey cougar.

3.

Last but not least, how about some good old plain water? It tends to do the trick just fine. If your hair is especially oily, just get that scalp under the showerhead along with the rest of your body during your daily shower (as I assume you all do).

the knee and the pockets. These creases will be more visible after having washed the jeans a year later.

Amongst the raw denim community is an obsession with obtaining the perfect fit and vintage look. Some denim junkies would even go as far as wearing the same pair of jeans every day for three years, just to get the perfect fades that give it that semi-vintage look. As Yorrick Boots, a denim aficionado and proud owner of two raw denim APC jeans, explains: “Menswear is more traditional. Jeans are embedded in every man’s closet, so raw denim actually makes a difference because it’s customized to the point where the jeans become one of a kind. There is a whole community out there that shares pictures of these creases and fades, which

become more of an individual. The same counts for raw denim

makes it extra special because you feel part of something.” But why would such brands encourage us to not wash them? It’s simple: as you grow, you become more of an individual, right? Well, the same counts for raw denim. All the creases, the rips and the fades that have developed by wearing a pair of raw denim are what actually make them different. Washing them will take all of that away. Picture yourself being you and then waking up one day not knowing who that is anymore. That’s an incredibly dramatic comparison, but you get the gist. Referring back to the great ‘unwashed >> trend’, we find ourselves being a lot more>>

why should I care about raw denim? Better value - Think number of wears vs. amount paid. You might be able to get a pair of pre-washed denim jeans for € 50, but what’s the shelf life on them? Raw denim jeans can withstand 1000+ wears before retirement.

Identity - You could say a pair of raw denim is like a personal canvas. The fades, marks, rips and tears are specific to you and your body.

Ethical - Non-raw denim jeans have a bigger and wider scale impact than you might think. Surely, there are some exceptions, but the low maintenance of raw denim is much more labour-friendly.

Next time you are experiencing a particularly grimy day, remember that a bit of dirty in your life is more than acceptable, it’s even encouraged, it’s just a matter of making the conscious choice.

Ordinary, everyday objects we all have laying around our home act as inspiration for Csilla’s imaginative subjects. She stacks, tilts, turns 70 degrees and hard-boils them to shift their connotations from reality into a kind of fantasy. Probably not what she had imagined herself doing six years ago, when she left Budapest, Hungary, to study Dutch literature in Holland.

In her home studio in Rotterdam her household objects take on a new life. Sponges act as bricks in towers of inanimate things and an agave plant is the proud topper to a carefully balanced mountain of stuff. Csilla believes that only items with a basis in reality can trigger illusory feelings. “There isn’t really fantasy without some reality,” she says. >>
