Reminder to seniors: Summer College Application Essay Required of All Seniors In an effort to ease the burden that most seniors feel during the fall quarter of their senior year, the school is requiring of next year’s seniors that each of them writes a draft of a college application essay during this summer. Full details can be found on the school’s website; under Quick Links, scroll down to College Essay. Basic parameters of the assignment are the following: 1. Each senior must write, over the summer, a draft of what can become a college application essay. He or she may write on two UC prompts; or one Common Application prompt; or a prompt from some other college or university he or she plans to apply to. 2. The essay must be word-processed and turned in to the senior’s English teacher on his or her first day of English class in August. The essay is worth 30 points in the “homework” category for his or her English grade. Late papers are not accepted (except as a result of excused absence); seniors who don’t submit the essay as due or who do not show a reasonable effort on the essay (as determined by the English teacher) will receive no credit. 3. The essay, as submitted, will be given to the senior’s counselor for review; that way, when the senior meets with his or her counselor in the fall, work has begun on what will evolve into a finalized college application essay. Aside from all this talk of requirements, this is a great opportunity for seniors to reduce the “crunch” that can come with college applications and their coursework in the fall. It will also enable counselors to work more effectively with seniors as they refine drafts of their college application essays. In addition, seniors who signed up by July 15th are reminded of the two-day College Application Essay Workshop on Wednesday, 8/1/18, 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.; and Thursday, 8/2/18, 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. (location will be on campus; precise location TBD, based on number attending). Full details about this free-of-charge workshop can be found on the school’s website; under Quick Links, scroll down to College Essay.
Attention seniors and senior parents! Senior Tributes: Each year, parents are given the opportunity to recognize and honor their senior student’s achievements with a special tribute section in the yearbook. Additional information will be provided this summer. All tributes will be due in early October. Senior Portraits: Senior portrait appointment times will be mailed home to all Mitty seniors from Prestige Portraits by Lifetouch Studios. Students may call the studio if they are unable to make their assigned time. All senior portraits must be taken with Prestige Portraits by Lifetouch Studios as of the beginning of October.
