Thank you to everyone who gave the gift of education this holiday season, helping us make Archbishop Mitty High School possible for all who seek it. Your generous donations, received during the Season of Giving Appeal, are changing lives. Thank you for helping our students become the intellectually competent, just, faith-filled, respectful leaders of tomorrow.
FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
Dear Friends,
The other day my family rewatched “Back to the Future Part II,” the iconic 90s movie sequel about returning to the past to try to change the outcome of the future. As we laughed, I thought about our return to school. This year, we’ve been finding moments of joy and community in being present in the moment – together – all year. We’ve been fortunate this year to return to past traditions like this year’s freshmen orientation, when more than 80 upperclassmen gave up their last week of summer vacation to come back to school early and enthusiastically welcome the Class of 2026. The Universal Synod Process at Archbishop Mitty High School invited our faith-filled community to return to the essential experience of listening intentionally to one another to further root us in our Gospel mission. Just a few months ago, nearly 700 spirited guests celebrated the comeback of our signature event, the Black & Gold Gala, featuring over 90 student performers who thrilled us with their God-given talents. And next month, we will welcome back our Athletic Hall of Fame Event, honoring Monarchs who have left an indelible mark on our championship legacy.
This school year we also acknowledge there are those in our community who did not return. The start to the year was filled with the heartbreak of losing friends, colleagues, loved ones, and Monarch alumni who have left us way too soon. They are deeply missed and our hearts are changed forever as we adjust to a future without them physically here. Everyday we honor their legacies by living with love in the present.
We also continue to be overwhelmed by the support offered by hundreds of donors, volunteers, businesses, and benefactors who contribute to the school, making it possible for generations of Monarchs to always have a place to come back home. Their names are featured in this 21/22 Annual Report edition and they have gifted us with every form of generosity possible so we can deepen our impact right now.
As a graduate of Archbishop Mitty, I often think about how it can be a transformational experience to go back to a place with intention and purpose. I suppose it is likely because oftentimes, you rarely return the way you left. However, no matter how many times we revisit the past or try to shape the outcome of the future, the truth is, it’s okay to be right where you are. To me this is the real moral of the story.
So as we usher in the new year, may you always live in and treasure the gift of the present moment. Because at the end of the day, it really is all we have.
With deepest gratitude, Latanya (Johnson ’92) Hilton President
WINTER 2023 1
Dear Friends,
In her article “On the Road Together” in this issue of Mitty Magazine, Director of Campus Ministry Jamie Visser reminds us that as Catholics taking part in the synodal process, we are all traveling “on the road together” in an effort to encounter one another, listen to one another, and discern what our hearts truly treasure. This synodal process closely reflects what we experience each day at Archbishop Mitty High School as we travel together on this journey through Catholic education in Silicon Valley.
As I flip through these pages, I chuckle at the reminder of the pure joy that celebrations like Freshman Orientation and Java and Jazz bring to our campus. Both events gather our community together to encounter one another through warm hospitality and Monarch spirit and allow us to listen to what our amazingly talented Monarchs come together to create. These events also provide a chance for us to reflect on the daily mentorship offered by our more veteran students to our younger students - a very special encounter for all of us to observe.
Other pages offer inspiration from our alumni who reflect on their own journey through AMHS and recognize that their time here shaped who they have become - members of a generous and supportive alumni community who pay forward the experiences they had while Monarchs to those who are just beginning their own journeys. One such alumnus is Michael Heffernan-Zelaya ’13, who returned to campus to work side-by-side with our students as they study and research and grow in their understanding of the world around them and who continues to give back to the Romero Institute, inspiring future Monarchs to understand the opportunities they have to become leaders and changemakers in their own communities. He joins a large number of alumni whose career paths have led them back to their alma mater and who generously give of themselves to today’s Monarchs.
And as I browse the pages of the annual report, I am once again awed by the generous support of so many, who have invested in the important ministry that we undertake each day. Their kindness and generosity enable us to continue to provide a mission-centric Catholic education to our Monarchs each year.
Thank you for entrusting your students with us, for your belief in the good work done here each day, and for the ongoing support of your alma mater.
May God bless you and your families.
With sincere gratitude,
Katherine Caputo Principal

★ THE AMHS HALL OF FAME IS BACK!
By Katie Helland - Director of Communications
The AMHS Hall of Fame, held on Saturday, February 4th this year, brings dozens of athletes back to a space that for many of them was a home away from home: the Fien Gym. The polished wooden floors have been the stomping grounds of the feet of Olympians, ESPN and Sports Illustrated reporters, and teams that have set records, won state championships, and hugged, laughed, and even shed a few tears – together. Stepping back onto these floors, with their towering rafters, which support countless championship banners, is a chance for Monarchs to take a walk down memory lane.
A grand reunion of sorts for athletics, the Hall of Fame brings some of the best and brightest athletes in school history together to celebrate sports and how they shaped their lives. As a nationally-renowned school for athletics, Archbishop Mitty High School’s Hall of Fame includes faces often honored by the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame, the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame, the Stanford Athletics Hall of Fame, the Pac-12 Hall of Honor, and the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Monarchs are recognized in one of four categories: Hall of Fame (alumni), Hall of Honor (coaches, staff, and athletic directors), Hall of Champions (teams), and Hall of Distinction (individuals who contribute to
the growth of the athletics program). But recognition is only part of the evening’s magic. At the heart of the event is the chance for generations of Monarchs to connect. In some cases, Monarchs finally get to meet their mentors, the alumni who set the bar for the excellence – and records – they spent their high school careers trying to beat. In other cases, alumni reconnect with high school coaches and learn they are now the mentors inspiring current students. The one uniting factor for everyone in the room? Monarch pride. The Mitty Magazine caught up with four inductees to share what they’ve been up to and how they continue to live out their Monarch values years after graduation.

MEET MONARCH KELLI HAYES
Monarch Kelli Hayes ’14 made her mark on AMHS history when she scored 1,860 points, becoming one of the top scorers in school history. As a student on campus, Hayes played four years of varsity basketball and led the Monarchs to three WCAL and CCS championships, two NorCal championships, and the elite state championship! She also played for the Philippines National Team before playing collegiately at the University of California, Los Angeles.
“Being a Monarch means you strive for greatness in all aspects of your life,” Hayes said. “From balancing a personal life, achieving at a high level athletically, and striving for greatness in the classroom — all play a critical role in the person you become and stay with you well after your time at Mitty.”
Always one to raise the bar for herself, today, Hayes is a business owner and entrepreneur. She started her first business, IsaaKookie, which creates custom orders of cookies, with her boyfriend Isaac Hamilton, who also played at UCLA. In 2021, Hayes started a second business, Happy Sunday Co, a boutique that specializes in running events, large and small. She balances running businesses with a full-time career in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Zeno Group, a Silicon Valley-based public relations firm. A graduate of the master’s program at the University of California’s Rossier School of Education, Hayes’ next goal is to earn a doctorate and start her own DEI consulting company. She credits high school with setting her up for success.
“The coach who inspired me the most is Coach Phillips,” Hayes said. “She believed in me as a person first and an athlete second. To have someone who has played, coached, and had success at every level — she inspired me at a young age to strive for greatness. She embodies what it is to be a Monarch.”

MEET MONARCH KRIS BUBIC
Once inspired by athletes playing Major League Baseball, today Monarch Kris Bubic ’15 is that baseball player inspiring current high school students. Bubic is a pitcher for the Kansas City Royals. Prior to going pro, he played baseball at Stanford University.
A two-sport athlete in high school, Bubic excelled in baseball and football. On the football team, he was named the WCAL Co-Kicker of the Year. On the baseball team, he was named the WCAL Pitcher of the Year.
“Being a Monarch means being selfless, staying curious, and being resilient,” Bubic said. “Our mission is to serve and inspire others to make society a better place for all. This means we must be compassionate and determined in our daily lives, especially when faced with adversity.”
Bubic credits his baseball coach and math teacher, Mr. Bill Hutton, with helping him achieve his dream of playing major league baseball. They still remain in contact today.
“He gave me an opportunity at a young age to pursue my dream and helped guide me along the way,” Bubic said.
“He taught me how to play the game the right way, be a good teammate, and to be professional both on and off the field. I will always appreciate the relationship we had and continue to have today.”
Being a student athlete at Archbishop Mitty helped Bubic prepare for not just the rigors of classes at Stanford, but the challenges of professional baseball. Going pro was always his dream. Now that he plays for the Royals, he enjoys traveling to different cities and seeing the stadiums he grew up seeing on television.
“Being a Monarch taught me the importance of being disciplined,” Bubic said. “Whether on or off the field, discipline will take you places that talent or intelligence alone can’t. It helped me to shape my habits and routines, which allowed me to be the best version of myself each and every day.”

SOFTBALL
MEET MONARCH JAZMYN JACKSON
For Monarch Jazmyn Jackson ’14, now a professional softball player, Archbishop Mitty was a safe place to learn confidence. In high school, Jackson led the softball team to four WCAL Championships and three CCS Championships. She went on to play softball collegiately at the University of California, Berkeley, and to participate in the World Championships with Team USA. Today, she leads a nonprofit, Verve in Action, which provides free softball and life coaching to kids in underserved communities. She credits Mr. Brian Yocke, her varsity softball coach, with teaching her to be the best teammate, sister, daughter, and role model possible, and Mrs. Sue Phillips, her advanced strength and conditioning coach, with setting her on the path to leadership.
“Growing up in sports, I believed my only job was to be quiet, work hard, and follow rules laid out for me,” Jackson said. “I was a competitive kid, but a very shy, not-so-confident kid. My first memory of Sue is telling me to lift my head and make eye contact with her when she’s speaking and to do this with every other person I encounter in the world. First, I was nervous out of my mind! Then, I admired her for demanding respect, which was new for me to see for women in sports. Then, I realized by lifting my head and making eye contact, I was also demanding respect. I have never been the same, and I am so thankful to Sue for empowering me — a shy, Black and Mexican girl — to be her own leader and be confident in what I bring to the table.”
Today, Jackson is a role model for other young women in sports. Each time she plays softball, she shows young girls it is possible to compete at the highest level. Jackson is also redefining the future of women in sports through her participation in Athletes Unlimited, a mission-driven sports league, televised by ESPN, that allows athletes to provide funding up to 50% of their season bonus to charities of a player’s choosing. Jackson credits her time at AMHS with setting her up to be a role model.
“To me, being a Monarch means being part of a family rooted in excellence, innovation, and most importantly, respect,” Jackson said. “I am proud to be a Monarch because I know my fellow Monarchs do not just prioritize statistical excellence, but are driven by making an impact on their campuses, teams, fields of study, and/or communities.”
Her next stop? Law school.
“I have done a lot of work to push voter engagement, activate my teammates, other athletes, family, friends, and followers to create change in the world, and fight for the underserved and overlooked,” she said. “I am ready to be on teams that create new policies and play a hands-on role in dismantling systems that are no longer serving the people of our nation.”

MEET MONARCH CHANDLER RAMIREZ
Chandler Ramirez ’14 knew he was meant to be a Monarch the minute he set foot on campus as a middle school student. He went on to become a two-time individual CCS Champion in wrestling and helped lead the men’s wrestling team to its first – and only – WCAL Championship in school history as a senior. He was also named captain of the football team and WCAL Co-Player of the Year.
“Archbishop Mitty was the final stop on my tour of all the Catholic high schools my eighth grade year,” Ramirez said. “After the visit, I hopped into my mom’s car and confidently proclaimed: ‘This is the one.’ Mitty’s diverse community and inspiring culture was infectious, and I knew it was where I needed to be.”
For Ramirez, Monarch pride meant participating in sports, including football and wrestling. But it also meant supporting classmates and engaging with dedicated teachers, who made learning fun.
“Although sports were a big part of my life, Mitty offered me other unforgettable moments,” he said. “A few of them were listening to Myha’la Herrold ’14 sing at school functions, arguing with Mr. Silva in his art history class over a painting of a fruit basket, watching near-professional musical productions by Mr. Santana, competing in speech and debate state finals, and destroying Monarch Madness each year with the Class of 2014. Being a Monarch is being whatever you want to be, without fearing you’ll be molded into something else.”
When asked who inspired him as a student athlete, he quickly named not one or two coaches but five, including Mr. Chris Curry, Mr. Jacob Malae, Mr. Brett Nichols, Mr. Matt Haniger, and Mr. Kurt Heinrich. Today, Ramirez is a platoon leader in the United States Army. He remembers fondly how Coach Haniger encouraged him to pursue higher education at West Point, where he went on to play football.
“When he initially asked me if I was interested in any of the service academies, I said ‘no,’” Ramirez said. “Thankfully, he didn’t listen to me and asked a West Point coach to come talk to me anyway. As my head football coach, Coach Haniger did a great job balancing football and the team’s academic performance. Without his support, I would not have had the opportunity to go to the United States Military Academy.”

Starting the School Year with
Java&Jazz
By Doug Santana - Director of Performing Arts
Each school year, the Performing Arts Department gets their exciting year of performances started by transforming an area of campus into Archbishop Mitty’s own coffee bistro for an evening of entertainment and refreshments with Java and Jazz. There’s no question that Java and Jazz is one of the most popular events of the school year due to the mouthwatering dessert buffet, coffee drinks, and award-winning jazz music provided by the jazz band, Jazz in the AM, and jazz choir, Kind of Blue. Jazz Band Director Mr. Mason Kimont remembers the first time the event was produced during the 2002-2003 school year.
“The event was held in the Aymar Events Center, which opened that fall, and it quickly became a fall event that both faculty and students enjoy,” Mr. Kimont said. “The evening acts as a homecoming for our Performing Arts Department as it kicks off the season.”
“
and jazz band, the majority of their performances are at travel festivals, including the Reno Jazz Festival and Santa Cruz Jazz Festival, and off-campus events, including Black and Gold and Christmas in the Park, so this is an exciting chance to perform early in the school year on the Archbishop Mitty campus.
Java and Jazz is one of the performances I love the most because it’s one of the few opportunities jazz choir gets to showcase the group’s talents and hard work with family and the wider Archbishop Mitty community ”
The evening features group performances from both the jazz band and jazz choir and also solo and small group performances from students within these groups. While the formula of music and dessert has remained largely the same over the years, there have been some updates to the coffee side of what makes Java and Jazz such a success, including adding baristas to create made-to-order espresso and latte drinks, and the new location of the event outdoors at the Power Courtyard. What makes Java and Jazz truly buzz is the gathering of the community. This unique event allows students to share their talents with family and friends. For the jazz choir
Paige Pataky ’23
“Java and Jazz is one of the performances I love the most because it’s one of the few opportunities jazz choir gets to showcase the group’s talents and hard work with family and the wider Archbishop Mitty community,” said senior Paige Pataky, a jazz choir vocalist. “Complimentary coffee is an awesome bonus, too.”
The opportunity for students from these ensembles to step out and perform solos to showcase their individual talents gives students a chance to shine on their own. That’s one of Jazz Choir Director Mrs. Erin Simón’s favorite parts of the evening.
“My favorite part of Java and Jazz is listening to the many solo and small group performances, and the overwhelming audience support each of them receives,” Mrs. Simón said.
So when fall rolls around next year, make plans to join the Performing Arts Department at Java and Jazz! The welcoming outdoor bistro will be sure to deliver an evening of great community and music.

Seeds for the Future
By: Michael Heffernan-Zelaya ’13 - Library Specialist and Alumnus of the First Romero Institute
The Archbishop Mitty High School Romero Institute for Latinx community members introduces students to conversations related to social justice issues faced by the Latin American community locally and abroad and is inspired by its namesake: Saint Óscar Romero of the Americas. Similarly, Archbishop Mitty’s I AM Camp focuses on community leadership in the context of Black history at the national and global levels. One of the areas of focus for both camps is educational attainment. With the help of Monarch mentors, middle school students get to witness first-hand what life is like at a highachieving school, like Archbishop Mitty High School, during these week-long summer programs.
On the first day, Monarchs reassured high-achieving middle school students that they can be leaders within their communities and at the Bay Area’s most prestigious universities. Romero students began to explore how art represents some of the struggles local communities face. The murals of the Mission District’s 24th Street Clarion Alley in San Francisco led to conversations about migration, displacement, gentrification, and workers’ rights that many of the students identified with themselves. This cultural experience was followed by a tour of the University of San Francisco’s Hilltop campus.
“I really like the trip to San Francisco because of all the beautiful murals,” said junior Alan Quintero, who was a mentor for the Romero Institute. “It helped me see our world’s problems through amazing drawings to really get a sense of each issue.”
The I AM Camp toured the campus of University of California, Berkeley, where students saw what life at one of the most prestigious public universities in the country would look like as a Black student. On the way back to the South Bay, the Black Power Exhibit at the Oakland Museum of California introduced students to one of the camp’s focuses: the history of the experience of Black people in America. The exhibit touched on topics such as police brutality, the suppression of Black civil rights movements, and economic racism.
“We learned about different Black leaders around the world, and how they positively impacted the Black community in multiple aspects of life,” said senior Alyssa Onyeagwa, a mentor for I AM Camp.
Service is an important pillar of the AMHS educational mission to develop young adults who are intellectually competent, faith-filled, just, and respectful leaders. Both camps strive to implement these principles at a young age. I AM campers had
the opportunity to give back to the community by volunteering at St. Justin’s Community Ministry in Santa Clara. The parish focuses on the needs of the homeless and disadvantaged, giving students an opportunity to learn about the housing crisis plaguing the valley while packing free lunches. The Romero Institute volunteered at the Garden to Table Silicon Valley Taylor Street Farm. Students learned where their food comes from while being introduced to important topics of environmental justice as they talked about food deserts in segregated communities and limited access to education about healthy diets.
“Being a leader in this community is very important to me because it gives kids a chance and someone they can look up to as a role model,” said junior Xavier Swanagan, a mentor for the Romero Institute.
Students in both camps learned about iconic leaders in Black and Latinx communities past and present: those who laid the foundations for the arduous project of social justice and those that continue to pave the path forward. They also met with professionals working in careers that serve vulnerable communities. These professionals, much like the alumni and college students who they interacted with, also shared some of the hurdles they’ve faced as Latinx and Black community members. Students engaged with these role models and practiced the basic principles of leadership for the next generation. Monarchs also got a taste of what it means to be leaders in education, as they guided campers through reflection and cultural activities related to complex issues often overlooked in the routine of everyday life.
“Being a leader for the Latinx community to me means that I’m a role model, someone who other Latinx people can look up to,” said junior Sara Castro, a mentor for the Romero Institute. “Knowing that someone is of the same ethnic background as you can bring a lot of comfort and a sense of belonging. This is what I hope to bring to the mentees and others in the future.”

Monarchs Looking Back to Pay it Forward
By: Greg Walker - Director of Student Activities
Every year, Student Activities begins the year with Freshman Orientation. It’s a wonderful and exciting opportunity to show off our school pride and welcome our newest students. The days are filled with fun events and informative sessions with the goal of building the foundation for meaningful and memorable high school experiences. As Monarchs become familiar with their new environment, Student Activities works especially hard to roll out the welcome wagon. Activities are planned to inform and educate, and let the students have fun in their new surroundings.
“
From a student’s perspective, one might describe it as the craziest and scariest moment of their lives. But from mine?
It’s one of the greatest days to be a Monarch!
”
Zach DeGuzman
Orientation consists of two days dedicated to helping the newest students get a fresh start: A clean slate to start at a school filled with energy, love, and community. While many focus on the arrival of the newest Monarchs, the story of a successful orientation lies in the students who make everything come together. Archbishop Mitty is blessed each year to have more than 80 students (mostly seniors) give up their last week of summer vacation to serve as orientation leaders. It’s our belief that there is something special and promising about having the students who are the oldest and most experienced leading those newest to campus. These students remember when they were nervous, anxious, and excited incoming Monarchs. They recall how older students took care of and embraced them as Monarchs. Given how the program is structured, Student Activities asks for the majority of seniors to take on this leadership responsibility, and many can’t wait to have this honor. This year, senior Zach DeGuzman was one of those student leaders.
“From a student’s perspective, one might describe it as the craziest and scariest moment of their lives. But from mine? It’s one of the greatest days to be a Monarch!” DeGuzman said. “Not only am I given the opportunity to spend time alongside other friends, who share the same ideas of community, but I get
to show that to incoming freshmen, who are unsure of what to expect at their new school, which we hope is their new home away from home. We get to show them the bonds we build each and every day. We get to show them what a leader is supposed to look like, and how we students, in our bright yellow shirts, are the faces that they are going to associate that word with. It’s a privilege to be able to stand on the court as we watch the hundreds of freshmen piling in through the Fien Gym doors — to be able to smile and greet everyone with a warm welcome. I was honored to be given the opportunity to be able to show the new students what our home is all about, and I hope that every time we have orientation, we leave a great lasting impression on students.”
’23
Senior Cassie Brown recounted a similar positive experience as an orientation leader. “I was inspired to be an orientation leader because of my own freshman orientation leaders,” Brown said. “I remember having so much fun and meeting some of my closest friends that day, and it was all thanks to my amazing leaders. Because of that, I want to continue that experience for future classes. Being part of LIFE Corps means being a leader and setting an example for the rest of the school to follow. Freshman Orientation is the perfect way to set the tone of the school year.”
Each year, student leaders show the newest Monarchs what makes our community special through kindness, hard work, and their willingness to share their God-given talents with others. As many of these upperclassmen prepare for their own orientations as first-year students in college, we hope each of them will receive the same welcome they’ve given to younger Monarchs at Archbishop Mitty High School.

On the Road Together
The Universal Synod Process at Archbishop Mitty High School
By: Jamie Visser - Director of Campus Ministry
In October of 2021, Pope Francis opened the Universal Synod on Synodality. This momentous occasion began the multi-year endeavor to engage the Church – including students, faculty, staff, and administrators at Archbishop Mitty High School – in dialogue. Pope Francis called for a Synod on Synodality to encourage conversation and listening amongst all Church members, both ordained and lay, across the world.
“You have come by many different roads and from different Churches, each bearing your own questions and hopes,” said Pope Francis, when he initiated the Synod. “I am certain the Spirit will guide us and give us the grace to move forward together, to listen to one another, and to embark on a discernment of the times in which we are living, in solidarity with the struggles and aspirations of all humanity.”
The word “synod” literally means “on the road together.” It is an opportunity for the entire community to encounter and listen to each other on matters relating to life in the Church. This process was instituted to help reveal the Church’s gifts and strengths, priorities and needs, and to further root us in the Gospel mission, as the Church prepares for the future. Pope Francis communicated that all dioceses across the world should hold listening sessions for their stakeholders. In spring of 2022, Archbishop Mitty High School enthusiastically answered the invitation to partake in this important process with our staff, students, and families. AMHS held 10 listening sessions with dozens of faculty, staff, and administrators, students of all grade levels, and parents/guardians. The Universal Synod facilitators engaged these groups in questions like: What joys do you experience in the church? What obstacles have you encountered? What is your dream or vision for the future?
The listening sessions produced heart-warming encounters in our community. At the core of each conversation were stories.
People shared the way the Church has held and supported them in times of despair. Individuals recounted moments of fear or worry that moved them to take action. Members offered their dreams for a Church which follows closely in Jesus’ footsteps as they call out injustice, act with compassion, and work for peace. A collection of all the data was shared with the Diocese of San Jose and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Ultimately, the Vatican will review all of the responses from the

worldwide Church in 2023 and discern how it will impact the Church. As we imagine the future, it was the conversations with students and their passion for their Church that inspired all listeners. Our Monarchs know the Gospel values and are yearning to help enact them. One student remarked, “I dream that the Church can be home for everyone.” We are confident that through their voice, action, and passion, the Spirit is present and helping to realize God’s vision of the Church in the world!
A fresco in the Vatican depicting the Council of Nicaea. Convoked by the Roman Emperor Constantine I in 325, the Council of Nicaea was the first ecumenical conference of bishops of the Christian Church, and most significantly resulted in the first uniform Christian doctrine. With the creation of the Nicene Creed, a precedent was established for subsequent councils of Synods to create statements of belief and canons of doctrinal orthodoxy— the intent being to define unity of beliefs for the whole of Christendom — a momentous event in the history of the Church and subsequent history of Europe.

#MONARCHPRIDE OVERSEAS
AMHS BASKETBALL STARS TAKE SPORT TO INTERNATIONAL LEVELS
By Katie Helland - Director of Communications
“After the gold medals were put around our necks, and we hopped up on the podium, gold confetti shot out of cannons,” Cheli said. “It wasn’t just a little gold confetti. It kept on coming. And it became this very special moment that I will never forget!”
Also on the podium was Coach Sue Phillips ’86, the head coach of Team USA and the AMHS varsity women’s basketball team. At the same time, just 483 miles away, Monarch Nathan d’Abreu Noronha ’24, a dual citizen of the United States and Portugal, was representing Team Portugal in the FIBA U16 European Tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria. These three
Monarchs represented their countries overseas, but they also represented Monarch pride.
Over the years, Coach Phillips has coached Team USA to gold medals – four times! While she had coached Monarchs who were part of Team USA in the past, including Haley Jones ’19, this was the first time one of her current student athletes was competing at that level while she was the team’s coach.
The women’s team prepared for competition by spending seven days at the Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where they practiced twice a day.

Monarch Morgan Cheli ’24 put her hands in the air as it rained confetti. Thousands and thousands of golden sparkles. Cheli wasn’t home in Fien Gym, or even the United States. Instead, she was playing basketball for Team USA at the FIBA U17 World Cup in Debrecen, Hungary, and had just helped the team win the championship.

While traveling to the camp, Coach Phillips ran into Monarch Brandi Chastain ’86, a fellow classmate, who happened to be on the same flight to Colorado. Chastain is famous for scoring the game-winning penalty kick in the World Cup Finals for the women’s soccer team in 1999. Coach Phillips invited her to visit the team at training camp and impart some wisdom on players. Chastain wasn’t the only AMHS fan cheering for the three Monarchs overseas. Current students, along with AMHS faculty, coaches, and staff logged in to watch FIBA men’s and women’s basketball games from California and sent the athletes encouraging text messages.
“Mitty has created such a great sense of community for its students that I knew I was being supported by my Mitty teammates and families, even when I was so far away,” Cheli said. “The outpouring of texts and messages from home really meant a lot to me.”
For d’Abreu Noronha, training started in Northern Portugal with 10-day camps over a period of five weeks. At first, 20 kids participated. Then, just 12 – including d’Abreu Noronha – were selected to represent Team Portugal at the FIBA U16 Tournament.
“At Mitty, we talk about ‘Monarch Pride,’ which to me means always giving your best, no matter the situation,” d’Abreu Noronha said. “Being a Monarch means trying to get better every day and helping others to get better too… That’s what being a Monarch means to me; to work hard, be my best self, and help others around me so we can all rise together. ”
This winter, all three Monarchs are back in the Fien Gym to play or coach basketball. As the men’s and women’s basketball teams compete this season, faculty, staff, and students will take seats in the bleachers to cheer them on, knowing that some of the best players in the nation make San José home as Monarchs.

WHAT IS COACH PHILLIPS’ ADVICE TO FUTURE CHAMPIONS?
“Not everyone has to do it all, but everyone has to give it their all. And in the end, we will all be ‘gold blooded.’ ”

COMMUNION BREAKFAST
Earlier this school year, Archbishop Mitty High School celebrated the annual Mother/Daughter Communion Breakfast. The event included a wonderful Mass, organized by the Campus Ministry Department, featuring student reflections and musical accompaniment from our liturgical rock band, Exodus. Following this service, guests enjoyed a delicious brunch inside the Aymar Events Center, as they mingled and caught up with fellow Monarch families. Many thanks to the Archbishop Mitty Parents Association, which helps organize and run this event each year. It was wonderful to once again gather as a diverse, faith-filled community, and we look forward to hosting this event again in 2023!

Concert in the Commons
Saturday, August 27th, marked the school’s second Concert in the Commons! This new event has been receiving high praise and is quickly becoming a community favorite. Under the lights in the Schott Family Commons, AMHS parents, families, and friends enjoyed a night of live music, drinks, food trucks, and dancing. The House Rockers, a local band run by AMHS Alumni Parent Paul Kent were the featured entertainers of the night. Be sure to mark your calendars as soon as next year’s date is announced. Concert in the Commons is a not-to-be-missed event!

Equipped with picnic chairs and some delicious food from vendors, guests enjoyed the green space in the center of campus as they waited for the show.
The Schott Family Commons transformed into a wonderful concert venue and community space where Monarch families and friends shared the dance floor.
Kent and The House Rockers provided some great tunes for the evening.

Monarch Fest
The classes of 1972, 1982, 1992, 2002, and 2012 came back to campus with their friends and families to celebrate their milestone reunions during Alumni Weekend’s Monarch Fest on Saturday, October 1st. This year, Monarch Fest had more than 250 attendees. Each milestone reunion year had a designated part of campus to gather together as a class while enjoying appetizers and beverages.
Each fall, Alumni Weekend provides an opportunity for alumni to bring their families back to campus and reconnect with their old classmates and the Archbishop Mitty community. There was a kid’s zone with a jump house obstacle course, face painting station, bubble wands, and more for the Mini Monarchs who joined the festivities. Alumni also had the chance to walk around campus, take candid pictures at the 360° photo booth, and catch up with more than a dozen current or retired faculty, who also attended. Monarchs, be sure to mark your calendars for next year’s Monarch Fest: Saturday, October 7th, 2023!

BLACK & GOLD GALA 2022
The Black & Gold Gala was held on Saturday, November 5th, at the Signia by Hilton San Jose. After a two-year hiatus, the return of Black & Gold was highly anticipated with nearly 700 guests in attendance. Festive energy radiated throughout the cocktail hour into the ballroom and onto the dance floor. AMHS Performing Arts students filled the foyer with jazz tunes as guests arrived and enjoyed cocktails, and students and faculty put together an extraordinary and entertaining production of greatest hits from the iconic MTV era that welcomed two standing ovations. Headlining comedian Rita Rudner brought her famous one-liners to the Black & Gold stage, filling the room with laughter and nostalgia.
The Archbishop Mitty High School Board of Regents hosted the evening, chaired by Regent Sonia Sangster and her husband, David. Proceeds benefited the Archbishop Mitty General Endowment Fund. Thank you to all the underwriters, supporters, guests, volunteers, students, faculty, and staff who made this event possible. Black & Gold is back!

ELLIOTT sends her greetings from Finland! She was an exchange student at Archbishop Mitty from 1986 to 1987. She returned to Finland to study goldsmithing and jewelry design at the Lahti Design Institute. Paula received an Erasmus Stipendium and went on to study stone cutting and design in Fachhochschule für Scmuck und Edelstein in Idar-Oberstein, Germany, for one year. From those connections, Paula received a job offer to go to Carmel-bythe-Sea, in California, where she lived for 13 years! During that time, Paula attended some Archbishop Mitty reunions, which she found to be absolutely wonderful! In 2009, she returned to Finland, where she worked as a jeweler in one of the most prestigious stores in Helsinki, Finland. Just a few years ago, she decided to change careers. Paula just graduated as a property manager and is loving it! She has a 10-year-old son, a fiancé, and life seems pretty good at the moment. Paula hopes to visit California sometime next year

This photo was taken from the Class of 1998’s slide archive! Remember when the AMHS campus had pay phones for students to use? This snap was most likely taken either right outside of the main gym or in a section of campus near Parker Hall that now houses the Kinkade Theater. Today, most students carry personal cell phones, so many of these fixtures have been taken out.

A LOOK BACK IN TIME
This photo comes from 1985! Though at first glance, this might look like a dance recital or rehearsal for the spring musical, it’s actually a snap of a Jazzercise class being offered at Archbishop Mitty. Here, students can be seen following along as they try to work up a sweat and hop onto the fitness trend of the 1980s.
Remembering Mrs. Kate Slevin
This fall Archbishop Mitty High School lost a beloved member of our faculty, Mrs. Kate Slevin, Science Department Chair. After a successful career with Boots the Chemist in the UK and then as a middle school science teacher at St. Martin’s in Sunnyvale, Mrs. Slevin joined the faculty of Archbishop Mitty High School in the fall of 2010. She taught Biology, Biology Honors, and her ever-popular senior science elective Human Health and Disease in Society.
Mrs. Slevin’s elective drew strong interest from seniors for the hands-on approach to understanding biological systems and the impact of disease in our world. She approached each of her classes with a deep care for her students and a steady patience that allowed students to better understand the course material and its impact on their lives. Mrs. Slevin was always “real” with her students, and they loved her for that.
Mrs. Slevin accepted the role of science department chair in 2015 and led the department through the expansion of the science curricular offerings and the construction of the Sobrato Student Life and Science Center.
As an outstanding Catholic educator, Mrs. Slevin took part in virtually every opportunity to work with students beyond the classroom. She worked as a MICAH leader, a LIFE Team Base Community leader, a Robotics mentor, a retreat leader, an Uplift moderator, and an immersion trip leader. Mrs. Slevin is survived by her husband, Jim Slevin, and their children Geraldine ’09, Michael ’11, and Roisin ’14. She was laid to rest in her home of Rostrevor, Ireland in November.

Monarch Leadership Society
The Monarch Leadership Society honors those friends of Archbishop Mitty High School who have contributed to the very foundation of the school by supporting the growth of the facilities, programs, and scholarships that make Archbishop Mitty High School what it is today. Each of these very special donors has a giving history of at least $50,000 or has made a formal commitment to the school through a planned gift or established endowment. Perhaps, even more importantly, each has invested in the lives of the students at Archbishop Mitty High School. Their support allows us to reach our goal of educating intellectually competent, faith-filled, just, and respectful leaders.

President’s Circle
The President’s Circle is comprised of alumni, parents of alumni, parents of current students, and friends of Archbishop Mitty High School who have made gifts of $4,000 or more during the preceding fiscal year. Many families and friends choose to continue their membership in the President’s Circle year after year in recognition of the superior achievements of the school. We salute the following members of this pace-setting group and hope that their example will serve to encourage others to invest in Archbishop Mitty High School.

Parents, alumni, grandparents, and friends of Archbishop Mitty High School contribute to the annual fund for many reasons. They believe in Catholic education, which is enlivened by religious and ethical values. They believe in youth and lifelong education. They believe in hope for the future, which knowledge gained through scholarship provides. Gifts to the annual fund help the school cover the gap between tuition and the actual cost of an Archbishop Mitty High School education by providing the resources necessary for competitive faculty salaries and academic and co-curricular programs.
GIFTS FROM PARENTS OF CURRENT STUDENTS
We recognize that parents already incur the cost of tuition, and we are grateful for their additional support, contribution, and investment in their children’s education. In most cases, the gifts listed represent an annual payment on each family’s four-year commitment to the Parent Pledge Program.

Gifts from Alumni and Current Students
All Archbishop Mitty High School students benefit from the altruism of the Monarchs who came before them. Alumni understand the value of the Archbishop Mitty High School experience perhaps better than anyone, and the ongoing support of the alumni community is critical to the school’s continued success.
On March 4, 2022, we held the fifth annual Monarch Day of Giving, raising $22,000 with 35 classes represented. Next year’s Monarch Day of Giving will be on March 3, 2023, the day after Monarch Madness, and in the spirit of the Madness, friendly competition will be encouraged between graduating classes. Thank you to the alumni who gave so generously during the 2021-2022 school year.

Engage with Mitty
As we began to return to in-person learning, we offered alternatives to some of our more traditional in-person community building and fundraising activities. Many supporters pivoted their support to our Engage with Mitty event series: Concert in the Commons in the fall and Voices in the Vineyard in the spring. Both events gave the Archbishop Mitty community an opportunity to get to know each other and support the AMHS General Endowment. We are grateful to the dedicated donors who remain faithful supporters of AMHS.

Archbishop Mitty High School Heritage Circle
The Archbishop Mitty Heritage Circle consists of alumni, parents of alumni, current parents, and friends of Archbishop Mitty High School, who have made provision for the school by means of a planned gift. These very special donors help to secure the financial future of Archbishop Mitty through their will or estate documents. A portion of their estate will be set aside for a special fund that will generate much-needed support for our programs and scholarships. This unique giving vehicle is the greatest of all gifts as it allows future Monarchs to enjoy the superior Catholic college preparatory education that Archbishop Mitty students and alumni have experienced.
The following is a list of individuals who have made the school aware of such a provision as of June 30, 2022.

Endowing Our Future
An endowment fund is the restricted capital that provides a permanent source of income for Archbishop Mitty High School. The principal is invested in a disciplined manner, and the earnings and investment appreciation are channeled back into the fund. This allows the endowment to grow over time and become a source of long-term support that can be maintained permanently.
Endowments provide much-needed funding for families who might not otherwise be able to afford a Catholic college preparatory education. They also provide funding for the programs and services from which all Archbishop Mitty High School students benefit. We continue our fundraising towards “endowing our future” after successfully achieving the $20 million goal of the campaign for Archbishop Mitty.
There are three types of endowment funds at Archbishop Mitty High School:
Scholarship Endowment Fund Investment earnings from this fund provide financial assistance to students with demonstrated financial need. Named scholarship opportunities begin with an initial gift of $10,000 or more, and a scholarship is considered fully funded (providing the median AMHS financial aid award) when it reaches $50,000.
Program Endowment Fund Investment earnings from this fund assist curricular and co-curricular programs at Archbishop Mitty High School. Named program endowment opportunities begin with a gift of $10,000. The amount required to fully fund program endowments varies, depending on the operating budget of each program.
General Endowment Fund Investment earnings from this fund supplement the school’s annual operating budget, helping to offset the gap between tuition and the actual cost of educating a student at Archbishop Mitty High School. Named general endowment opportunities begin with a gift of $10,000.
Those wishing to take part in the campaign for Archbishop Mitty High School by establishing their own endowment or by contributing to existing endowments at any giving level should contact Teré Aceves, Vice President of Advancement, at (408) 342-4390.

Brother Herman J. Fien was a dedicated Marianist who devoted his entire life to God by teaching and serving others. From 1964 until his death in 1977, Brother Fien taught modern language at Archbishop Mitty High School. He worked tirelessly with the parents at Archbishop Mitty High School, particularly the volunteers, who gave of themselves in an effort to build community and spirit.
Each year since his passing, the volunteers of Archbishop Mitty High School are honored in his name for their selfless dedication of time and energy on behalf of the school community. We are blessed with exceptionally dedicated men and women who, like Brother Fien, continue to give generously of their time and talents, without which we could not offer an Archbishop Mitty High School education. Their example of service and care is volunteering at its best.

Service Learning Program
The Service Learning Program exists to provide students with an opportunity to offer witness to their strong commitment to Christian values through service to the community. Each student is required to complete a minimum of 20 hours each year during their freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior years. Through service, students fulfill their potential to be intellectually competent, just, faith-filled, respectful leaders as they serve others and work to bring justice to all God’s children. We are grateful to the following organizations, which are some of the many groups that hosted Archbishop Mitty High School students this year.

Supporting Archbishop Mitty High School
Memorial and Honorarium Gifts
Memorial and honorarium gifts offer an opportunity to honor a relative, friend, or business associate. Any special occasion –birthday, anniversary, graduation, and other accomplishments – is a time to remember.
Special Events
Underwriting and sponsorship of events, such as the annual Black & Gold Gala, Mitty Online Auction, and Alumni & Friends Golf Tournament, serve to defray the school’s expenses to produce these fundraisers and community events. Your contributions are tax deductible as allowed by law. Please contact Vivian Peng, Director of Events Operations & Community Building, at vpeng@mitty. com to discuss opportunities.
Bequests
In providing for the school in a person’s estate, the donor’s lawyer should be instructed that our corporate title is “Roman Catholic Welfare Corporation of San Jose, a corporation sole, for the benefit of Archbishop Mitty High School.”
Securities
The best stocks to donate are those that have increased greatly in value, particularly those producing a low yield. Donating property that has risen in value and that has been held for more than one year results in no payment of capital gains tax on the transaction. Individuals can also receive an income tax reduction for the full fair market value of the stock.
Please contact John Bennett, Director of Annual Giving and Special Gifts, at jbennett@mitty.com for a stock transfer form and instructions.
At the Time of Death
During the bereavement period, friends often seek an appropriate means to express sympathy. The following message in the obituary of the deceased provides an avenue to make a meaningful and thoughtful gift: Memorial gifts may be made to Archbishop Mitty High School, 5000 Mitty Avenue, San José, CA 95129.
